Dear AAs,

Due to observed behaviors, I wanted to take the time and write a message for you.

It seems like a whole lot of you are wasting your precious youth, resources and potential on obsessing over Jensen so much you lose track of who you are and what you are on this earth to fulfill.

Your infatuation is so high it blinds you and strips you of your values and dreams. You put Jensen and Danneel on a pedestal and feel like less of a human for not being them. You are creating limitations in your own life over a bunch of semi-celebrities who aren't even educated compared to you.

While appreciating or admiring something is a beautiful experience, it should never get to the point where your intelligence becomes overshadowed by your unrealistic expectations and views of two people.

Strive to be YOU, to live YOU and what you most love. Before it''s too late for all of your dreams. You are so caught up in false idols you cannot see how toxic worshiping them is to your own life trajectory.

You project unrealistic view unto Jensen and Danneel because you are afraid to go out there and build your legend, live your uniqueness.

I am serious, I see a lot of underage girls even or way too young lusting after Jensen so much they completely forego their goals and most especially their personalities. They become an empty shell.

If meeting and marrying a highly attractive man is your dream then focus on that and work on developing the life you want, being the person you dream of being, living that true love, being it. That takes work but it's worth it, you are worth it. When you give all your power away to clueless celebrities all you are doing is telling your subconscious mind you don't feel worthy of your dreams, you are not the leading character of your life. Guess what? Your reticular activating system (RAS) then filters life accordingly and you miss out on opportunities and key moments.

It's healthy to have role models, if they match your life trajectory, but ensure you balance out your perceptions and realize they are human, just like you. Just as you appreciate them, you should be appreciation yourself and if you are not already doing that then there is a huge imbalance in your life and, most likely, you energy will end up being sapped by false idols instead of inspired by healthy, realistic, measurable goals and pursuits.

You weren't put on this Earth to be an echo of Jensen and Danneel. You are uniquely you so show up for yourself and your desired life way more than you obsess over J/D. They can steal away time from your life and guess what? Life progresses pretty fast and before you know it you will have a mountain of regrets instead of a heart full of fulfilling memories and tangible results in your life. You will look back and suffer and realize how silly it was to get caught up in mindless infatuation.

I hope you do me a favor. Grab a piece of paper, list every aspect you love about Jensen or Danneel or whoever it is you obsessively stan. Then go through that list and ask yourself: "Where in my life have I displayed these traits?" Don't stop until you answer it for each quality.

If you want to balance your perceptions even more, do the same for their perceived flaws and quirks. This will allow you to see them as human like you and to appreciate them in a balanced way in full awareness of both their negative and positive traits.

If you do me this favor, you will release yourself from your manic perceptions about them and you will be in control of your emotions and your direction.

A second favor would be: Create a vision board of what you want in your life, then grab a notebook and write a scenario of how each of those experiences would feel. Once you are in touch with those feelings, begin breaking down your goals into small, realistic, measurable steps and commit to taking a priority action each day to reach those milestones. Whenever you need to re-energize, go back to the vision you created and live it fully inside, remember your WHY and keep recommitting day by day. If you do this, rather than consume yourself with obsessing over Jensen and Danneel, just imagine where your life will be months from now, years from now. You will reach a new bliss and it will be thanks to your self-care, dedication and focus.

May all of your dreams become your reality and they will, if you chose to believe in yourself rather than giving power away to false idols and escapism.

there is evidence, proof, so so much of it. and even then, just her behavior alone, without the really bad stuff, is questionable to say the least. i dont know how to put it, but she and her fans act like 12 year olds on wattpad (i used to be one of those kids to some extent ik what im talking about here lmfao). it is a FACT she's horrible and disgusting (i could list a thousand other things here but the critical community already knows all this) and still people defend and dickride her. it is no lie that her fanbase is like a cult. i wonder if these people are actually completely oblivious or are just as horrid because the fact she's a horrible person is as clear as day. the fetish shit, her weird ass transphobia, her blatant disgregard to actual victims that aren't her fans, her drawing... that , her racism, her- should i go on? and i fear there is no consequences for BOTH these people- they will go on until they die without ever facing their actions and stuff. its disturbing.

its like j*k*r all over again. i sense a pattern here. not sure what kind, but its so fucking baffling how both are horrid and insufferable AS CLEAR AS DAY as people and HARM OTHERS and still get so much support. both need to be studied because what the fuck have they going on that protects them meanwhile some people on social media get cancelled for one sentence they said 17 years ago (not that that's not "valid" it's just baffling how some people get cancelled over the smallest shit meanwhile....) and these people get to enjoy their life without consequences while there's MOUNTAINS of proven evidence.

i feel like i discovered a goddamn alien baby the way im so fucking flabbergasted at all this.

Hey, no worries! Rant away! It's a very strange enigma for sure, and the fandon does indeed act like a cult! My guess for how Viv keeps getting away with all this stuff is that she has a parasocial relationship with her fanbase. The idea of landing a job or getting close with a creator with such a large following overrides any sense of reason or care for her actions, so people keep gassing her up because it could likely lead her to like or comment on their stuff. There's also the pseudo kind act she puts on, so people think she's the sweetest person ever when she has showcased the opposite. There's also a loooot of fandom bullying. Lots of the big dogs in the fandom bully people into silence or make em think they're in the wrong.

There's a WHOLE lot of control going on here, and thanks to her ass kissers logic is thrown out the window. Finally, there were the overblown posts highlighting things that, while weird or gross, aren't "cancelable" enough or downright exaggerations of the truth or lies. These threads on Twitter, especially back in 2019, did more harm than good and led many into believing there was a mob that simply wanted to cancel her for being popular. The threads consisted of her old cringe art (some are very questionable don't get me wrong) rather than the ones where she encouraged fandom bullying and made fun of a 15 year old fan for simply being critical of her work and called them nasty for it. No one did any research on her behavior or how she was an absolute bully to people like Starvader. Callouts need to consist of hard evidence so stuff like this doesn't happen, where your callout does more harm than good.

These factors led to many straight up turning off their brains and blatantly ignoring hard evidence. It's very, very stupid.

Also, who is the other person you mentioned? The only one that comes to mind is the guy who plays League of Legends and is famous for winning many championships.

Basically the side characters are each products of the main three's routes in some way and I'm hoping to include them as part of those stories as more detailed elements of their overarching arcs.

Kazu first showed up in canon in a Yakuza themed AU short story I wrote for Patreon to be Mori's right hand man and bodyguard. He's 6'5" and built like a brick shithouse (charm point: huge tiddies and a tiny waist, very Dorito coded). Kazu's a fun combination of Stoic and Confident- he's an expert martial artist so he's kinda got that meathead/jock swagger- but also a delightful degree of socially inept and has a constant intense resting bitchface. He would beat someone into a paste for threatening you without blinking but if you cried in front of him he would have zero idea what to do. His personality is very Guard Dog? He always reminds me of a very mean doberman, alert and ready to react Severely and also absoLUTELY unswervingly loyal to people he's decided to trust. With Mori, the dynamic is especially funny as it took Kazu a while to respect him enough to take orders from but now that Mori's proven himself, Kazu would do basically anything he said, though they do share the Warrior's Bond and have to brawl a lot to work out the tension or solve disagreements.

Kazu used to be in a biker gang and spent time in prison (he also used to be super skinny and didn't bulk up until his mid twenties). He runs a mechanic shop during the day where he customizes cars and bikes and also built his custom bike, Kanōbo, from the ground up. He also loves J-Idols + has an anime figure cabinet and worked in an izakaya/pub for a number of years so he can actually cook. Vital funfacts: He enjoys beating people up, loves steak, is a junior high dropout, and nearly qualified for olympic level judo.

As of now Kazu doesn't have a demon deal but no promises for the future :)

Raath is almost comically complex for his role as a side character and is actually a redux of an OC I had in another fandom many years ago. Canon took a direction i didn't like and for a long time Raath sort of simmered but I love his Assholish Behavior and found a great role for him in TCM as Amir's parent's go-to hitman.

Raath is, above all else, brutal and carnal to the core. He was raised in a really fucked up way that cut him off from any semblance of a normal human childhood as part of an dark-entity-worshipping, off the grid assassin cabal. He was raised essentially as a child soldier and pushed because of his prodigy and proclivity towards assassin skills. He's socially inept but in a weaponized way, unafraid to flagrantly disregard social norms to say or do whatever he wants.

Raath is about 6'3"ish and lean/lithe. He's muscular but built for dexterity over strength- though don't let that fool you, he's immensely strong. While he doesn't know his origins, he was born in Greece to Cypriot parents. When he was a young teen, his cabal master had the revelation that Raath was the link back to their supernatural patron and decided to ritually mutilate him (in accordance to the old ways) as a sacrifice. The ordeal was utterly brutal (think legends of the old norse Blood Eagle) and by all accounts, there's no way he should have been able to survive. But miraculously, somehow, he did and the cabal considered that a sign to continue his training.

Raath doesn't have a demon deal. However, in the world of TCM, there are different orders of "demons" (not all supernatural entities use that word to describe themselves, its more of a human POV type label). Mori, Amir, and Akello are all humans-turned-demons via contracts made with other demons. Tor, from Akello's chapter, is a full demon and had never been anything else. Raath is something different altogether. Essentially, Raath is a human vessel for the phonos of bloodlust, Aimvoros. In Greek mythology, phonoi are deities that are the literal personification of a human emotion/experience and they're the children of Eris, the goddess of discord. Aimvoros is a play on the Greek words for Blood Hunger. So ESSENTIALLY, Raath has a demon of a Particularly potent caliber in his head somewhere, who's slowly and quietly trying to take him over and regain a physical form. Raath, however, is wild and unpredictable AND a lot more cunning than he seems. So the baseline for Raath is that he's playing a mental game of cat and mouse with a minor god inside his own head and winning. Its a long and arduous process but it sets the stage for Raath becoming the new blood god while retaining his human consciousness.

For his day job, Raath is an assassin/hitman who specializes in out of range sniping and making a huge mess of his targets. He's the guy you send in when you want to send a message, not have a kill go under the radar. As such, he's been very useful to Amir's parents for their dirty business and political maneuvering, though he's only as loyal as the assignments are engaging. Amir and Raath dislike each other a lot but they both acknowledge that the other is Useful in their own right.

Marcel is, by comparison, the freshest TCM character on the roster and so I'm still kind of feeling him out a little bit. He's gregarious and loud, generally friendly and well liked by classmates, coworkers, and teachers. He's very much that Star Football Player Who's Best Friend is in Band- he could absolutely be an asshole with the social position he's had as a high performing athlete going into college on a sports scholarship but his swagger and cockiness is more charming than offensive and he doesn't let the college sports environment get TOO much into his head.

He is, however, very confident and sure of himself. Growing up he got in trouble for backtalking to teachers almost constantly, and always had a comment for any given situation. He has an incredibly loud, unique laugh that you could pick out in a crowd and even now on the college campus him and his friends are usually the most animated group in the quad at any given time.

Marcel works hard and takes his studies pretty seriously or rather.... as seriously as he has to. He keeps his grades up to maintain financial aid but is always ready to party and now that he's on his own and establishing his adult life, he's ready to experiment and try new things.

Marcel found out about the demon infestation in the city on his own and was willing to make a deal with one for information on the accident that "killed" Akello but has so far managed to avoid actually taking out a contract. Akello and Marcel were very VERY close before the accident, however, and now they're sort of trying to figure out how to go back to that. Akello's big Parental Fear is that Marcel will have a Party Whore College Boy (like HE DID) phase and lose track of his academic pursuits.

For now, I'm lacking in Marcel concept art but Atlas' headshot is fucking dreamy so here it is again.

Merlin (2008)

I need to talk about one of my favorite video game villains of all time for a minute.

This guy. The one who I'm pretty sure a lot of people who played The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel 3 and 4, probably ended up hating for how much of a dick he was in those two games. His change in behavior and attitude in the later games didn't make me hate him, though. In fact, it made me like his character even more because it was pretty easy to understand why Cedric ends up like that when you consider the events of the finale in the second Cold Steel game:

He was kidnapped by Duke Cayenne during the Civil War in Erebonia and was forced into one of the seven divine knights, Testarossa, which went completely berserk since Cedric was unable to control it's power at the time. As a result, he was forced to fight against Class VII, who ended up saving him, but at a great cost to one of their own classmates. Crow ends up dying, trying to break Cedric free from Testarossa. Cedric saw all of this happening before his eyes and couldn't do anything to stop it. So it's really no wonder that, when we see him again in Cold Steel 3, his demeanor has changed entirely, and he's obsessed with obtaining power. He goes from the sweet, innocent boy whom we are introduced to in the first Trails of Cold Steel game into someone who is pretty much unrecognizable and with his own little crew.

His sudden change was a shock to me at first. I really wasn't expecting it at all, especially since when he first appeared, he spoke politely. It wasn't until his conversation with Rean on the school rooftop later on that day that we see just how much he's actually changed. The conversation starts out well enough, with Cedric thanking Rean for saving him in the last game. We can clearly see what happened back then really took its toll on Cedric, and that it still weighed heavily on him.

He tells Rean that during the summer after that incident, he got very sick and, as a result, was unable to start school at Thors Military Academy until the following year. Nothing seems odd... until Cedric proposes that Rean should transfer to teahc at Cedric's school, the main campus of Thors Military Academy. This is when we see his demeanor start to change. He talks down about the branch campus and says that someone like Rean is better suited for the main campus, which Cedric holds in high regard in comparison to the branch campus. Rean's students eventually find them on the rooftop, and Cedric is cold towards them, especially to Kurt. He then leaves, but not before saying that he'll be back to hear Rean's response to his demands another day.

Over the course of the game, we see just how much Cedric changed. He's competitive, thinks that power is everything, and absolutely hates weakness. He constantly talks down to others and doesn't care how he makes them feel as a result. The end of Cold Steel 3 really showed just how far Cedric was willing to go to get what he wanted.

He attempts to kill another one of Rean's students, Altina, so that she could become the sword of the end, which was needed to bring about the Great Twilight. He was also completely ok with having his older brother and two other people killed to accomplish this goal (even though as we saw in the 4th game, he was relieved to see that his brother has survived). These two acts really shocked me, because not only did it show a stark contrast to who Cedric was before versus who he was now, it highlighted just how much the events of Cold Steel 2 really changed him, and not for the better.

Cedric becomes one of the main antagonists of Cold Steel 4, and he proves himself as a strong enemy to take down. He was way more of a jerk here than in Cold Steel 3, and it has really seemed as if he has gone off the deep end for good. Then we get to the final chapter of Cold Steel 4, where Cedric is one of the final boss battle fights. He's still the same condescending jerk that he's been for a while now, but everything changes when Juna asked him one question: "What are you so afraid of?" Then all of a sudden, the truth comes out: Cedric was being controlled by the influence of Ishmelga, thanks to Chancellor Osborne and Franz Reinford. Now, this certainly doesn't excuse what Cedric has done up to this point, but it certainly explained why he was willing to go so far all of a sudden, when he hadn't been like that before. It was as if Juna asking him that question had suddenly opened a dam though, because this was what finally made Cedric return to how he used to be. What I absolutely loved about this is that he doesn't try and use Ishmelga as an excuse for the things that he did. He owns up to his actions and sets out to atone for them.

What he eventually chooses to do though was shocking, but it made sense: he decides to join Oroboros, leaving his friends and family behind.

Just as he says, if he stayed with all of them, he knew that he would be forgiven in spite of everything and he wouldn't really have any consequences for his actions. So joining Oroboros as a way to atone for what he did was the right call imo. Cedric's arc is probably one of my favorite ones in Cold Steel 3 and 4. It was very well done and Falcom handled him really well, and I can't wait to see more of him in future games.

i've seen your post about the new va show (the one by j***e p**c) and i think the discution about representation would be much easier if ppl would realize eastern europeans (not only slavic but all of us) don't mean racial/phenotypical representation. yes, we see ppl who look like us, but don't see ppl who ARE like us – our culture, life style, behavior etc – unless they're a villain/hooker or both.

i cried when i saw moroi and strigoi (actual mythological romanian creature) being more than fancy/spicy names for vampires in the books. i was so happy to see romanian, the language, being used and not to mention the comrade jokes... i teared up (bcs we may not have grown up with communism but our teachers, parents, grandparents, all the adults in our lives did. we grew up with stories and had our fun with it bcs we didn't understood the weight of it. i remember having boys try to immitate Ceaușescu and all of us spoke with tovarăș (the romanian version for comrade) at some point just for the fun of it).

it's like with the witcher. they made the villages, clothes, music, customs, *everything* anglosaxon. when it could have painted an eastern european fantasy. i imagine actors in our traditional clothes, in our traditional houses, with our myths and lore and i'm so angry we didn't get that. and the witcher had slavic ppl involved in its making for the first season, then they quit bcs they couldn't bear it (grain of salt, i saw a post about it, but hadn't fact check).

i mean, why can't there be both? young poc being able to see ppl who look like them on screen AND young eastern euros being able to see ourselves and our stories as well. why erase/change/disregard the eastern european stuff?

And yes. We want people who are like us, act like us. People coming from here.

I've said it once and I will say it again: the americans are the only ones OBSESSED with the color of your skin. They are obsessed and they are showing it everywhere. Are Europeans racist? Yes, they fucking are. But europeans are racist with EACH OTHER. Romanians hate Hungarians and vice versa. British hate French and vice versa. The whole of Western Europe thinks we, Eastern Europenas are stealing their jobs and such but you will never see and european call the police on a black person. Or worse. No.

Strictly speaking as a Romanian, living in Romania, and growing up with western media where Romanians were portrayed as thieves and whores: I fucking cried when I first saw bits and pieces of Romania and Romanian in the Vampire Academy. And people who believe that Romania and Romanians don't have a place in the Vampire Academy world, should read at least wikipedia and see exactly where MOROI and STRGOI came from.

You are welcome, american Vampire Academy fans, for having a tv show based on Romanian mythology with zero fucking representation to Romanians but full of americans and english.

I don't think this fandon understands how it feels too see your legends, myths and LANGUAGE - FUCKING LANGUAGE - in a tv show where they are ERASED.

I will forget the casting choices, the changes, the mess they did, but I will never fucking forget Julie Plec and co. for creating a new fucking language "OLD MOROI" instead of using what was right in front of them and what stood at the bases of creating the whole Vampire Academy world. Romanian.

I don't try to come at me and tell me "romanian didn't had any representations in the book anyway" like you are doing with Turkish people because I will fucking end you. Take a look again at Mână (https://vampireacademy.fandom.com/wiki/M%C3%A2n%C4%83) and read the bios of half of the characters. BTW. Dragomir is a Romanian name :)

As @ladystarkov already said, Spain is full of Romanians. And I guarantee you anyone would have loved to be involved in this show.

So yes, dear darling fans, next time you try to come out and tell us that we are racist, that we are haters, maybe try and imagine how would you feel if some French tv show director would make a Hamilton tv show, with all the characters... Asian and African, and no one would speak English. Only French, Arabic and Japanese.

It’s holiday movie season!

Today I watched the new Netflick jam, The Noel Diary. Something I saw online called it a Rom Com but it has no com--it’s just a rom.

In a purely holiday-romance-movie fantasy world, Jake Turner (played by an insanely hot man named Justin Hartley--apparently he’s on This Is Us--who is exactly ya girl’s type--just put some glasses on him and I’d be a complete goner) is a WORLD-FAMOUS and QUITE WEALTHY novelist who has lines around the block in NYC in December to sign his books. You wish, (male) author of the novel on which this movie was based! Impossible!

Anyhoozles, Jacob/Jake/J. Turner has to return to his estranged late mother’s house to deal with her hoarded stuff. For some reason I missed, he is so entirely estranged from her he did not even attend her funeral, though he’s her only survivor; he’s told about the funeral by his late mom’s senior citizen neighbor-lady (B-list legend Bonnie Bedelia). I could not square this bad behavior; I don’t think it was explained what his excuse was. While he’s there, with his dog, Ava, who is a fluffy blue-eyed shepherd and a very goog girl, a pretty woman named Rachel (Barrett Ross) arrives unannounced, looking for her biological mother who worked for Jake’s parents as a nanny back in the day.

She has a fiance, they have undeniable chemistry (like, for real--I believed their romance), through a series of fits and starts they learn they have some things in common like a desire to be independent, an inexplicable mutual love of jazz standards despite being under 40 years old, and holes in their hearts in the shape of missing parents (Jake is also estranged from his dad, who left the family when he was very small, after the death of Jake’s baby brother). Now that I’m thinking about it, these people have exactly the amount of unresolved, complex trauma that requires therapy--not falling in love with another broken person--but they’re both just walking around seeming pretty put-together. Ah, movie magic!

They decide to go visit Jake’s estranged father in a made-up Vermont village that is custom built for a holiday romance movie setting. There’s a Christmas fair and a bed and breakfast! But two rooms! But the rooms adjoin! But no hanky nor any panky. They go to see the dad, he gives them some info about the bio-mom and he and Jake make an uneasy peace. Oh! At this point Jake and Rachel sleep outdoors in a Vermont snowstorm overnight in a car, and somehow do not wake up frozen dead as they would have IRL. Anyway, on to another, different quaint town or at least a different B & B. This time there’s only one room! And so guess what?!

But the fiance. So, Boy, bye. Jake makes a grand gesture where he calls her “the woman I love” after having known her literally four days, but that’s what we came for so I guess I’ll allow it. She shuts him down! He accepts it and goes back to the hoarder house. She comes back for him. The End.

I usually like a lighter tone in my holiday romance movies but this one is solid (the leads really did have good chemistry and were likable). A decent start to the month.

I - Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why

Kind of. I think that the brute force of the reason still lays with the shows themselves, but the... constant exposure to it on tumblr has highlighted it in multiple cases?

Like, shows where the quality was steadily declining, shows I would have forced myself through to the end anyway because I started them and want to know how they end.

But now there's tumblr, with all the GIFs and stuff and the more often I see GIF sets of such shows that I am slowly losing interest on, the... more it accelerates this process? Until I end up blacklisting the show and dropping it because actually nah I don't need to force myself through it to the end, it's gone to shit and it's okay to let go.

Which, I actually think is a positive thing, honestly? I used to force myself through so many shows for the sake of completion when it's actually really okay to just accept that something that started off good has gone to shits and is no longer enjoyable for me, so I'll stop watching it.

(And this isn't meant as a negative comment toward GIF makers. They obviously GIF the things they cherish and love. It's just that those, in particular, drive home that I've stopped caring?)

Though on a more direct manner, where seeing the way the fandom behaves on tumblr absolutely did make me not want to get attached or into this fandom, yeah! The first example that comes to mind for this is definitely Star Wars, one of the most fucked up fandom I've ever seen.

The hostile, toxic and absolutely ridiculously contradictory behavior of the Star Wars fandom is most definitely what caused me to not stick with that and only write like one drabble for it. But the awful and also just impossibly weird behavior in this fandom always made me keep my distance, which in the end led to me losing all interest or attachment and moving on again once the trilogy ended.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr

Mmmh, I guess you could say Buffy? Buffy has been my favorite show for like twenty years now. But I never considered fandom for it, I just regularly rewatch the show every one or two years and love it. And then I figured I'd look for GIFs on here and stumbled over just how thriving this fandom is and ended up following a lot of lovely people for GIFs and posts, there are so many posts, theories, metas.

Somehow, even though I've been active in fandom for over fifteen years, it had never really crossed my mind that there might be a fandom for my favorite show? Maybe because it'd always been "closed", the show ended years ago. All fandoms I got into were always... alive, currently running. And tended to die out a slow and painful death after the shows end.

So the fact that this show still has such a thriving fandom was a great, positive surprise and here I am, 60+k words into writing a multiple chapter story for this show because the tumblr fandom let my love for the show grow in new ways they hadn't before.

Ah, that is rare nowadays because quite honestly I'm quick to blacklist? I like my dash curated and usually when a thing I don't know myself pops up too frequently, I'll just blacklist it xD

Maaaybe like Legend of Zelda still? I've never played a game but I am vaguely invested in the blonde twink and his shark merman boyfriend.

WEEK 9 : Gaming Communities and Live Streaming

Gaming Communities :

Online gaming communities can be regarded as ecosystems in which players and in-game groups compete or cooperate for resources (Chen et al., 2008). Players typically join groups that share their interests, perspectives, and playing styles. This is significant for both individuals and clans, as players have diverse reasons for playing games (Khan et al., 2015). In the meantime, players expand their interpersonal social networks, allowing them to collaborate and ultimately perform better in-game (Meng et al., 2015; Shen et al., 2014). The dual social channels for resource access make this gaming community an ideal setting for studying group dynamics and their relationship to interpersonal networks (Ducheneat, 2009). (Sun et al., 2021).

As the barriers of entry to both videogame production and distribution have lowered over the past decade, a wider range of people have begun creating and sharing a wider range of ostensibly ‘independent’ (but not necessarily ‘indie’) videogames. These creators have variously been called ‘videogame zinesters’ (Anthropy, 2012) or ‘everyday game makers’ (Young, 2018), and they often represent a range of marginal identities historically excluded from the formal videogame industry (including from commercially feasible indie.

Live Streaming

The formation of gaming communities can be attributed to a number of factors, one of which is streaming platforms. There are a number of game streaming websites, such as Twitch, Youtube Gaming, Facebook Gaming, and DLive. However, Twitch, which is a gaming-focused video-streaming network separated from Justin.tv in June 2011, is by far the most popular. Within a relatively short period of time, this platform has had a significant impact. In 2017, Twitch attracted more than 10 million daily active users, 17,000 Twitch Partners, and 110,000 affiliates (content producers who earn money from their broadcasts) (Twitch 2017b, 2017c). Games from a wide range of disciplines are available on the site. Over the course of a weekend, major e-sports tournaments usually attract millions of viewers. It has been found that broadcasters who play a variety of games can attract thousands of spectators per broadcast (Taylor, 2018).

Unlike recorded videos, which can be altered prior to their release, live streams are broadcast in real time and are never edited (Think U Know). Some members of the gaming community appreciate spectating while others engage in their preferred activity. Because of this, online gaming broadcasts have become so popular. By streaming their practice sessions live online, professional e-sports players and teams can increase their fan base, brand awareness, and revenue streams (Zyza, 2022).

Chapter 5 Field Work

Miscegenation – “A demeaning historical term for interracial marriage.” Cultural Anthropology A Toolkit for a Global Age THIRD EDITION Kenneth J. Guest

Today people are free to marry whoever they choose. Apart from sly remarks here and there from few, people can marry each other without having to worry about real backlash and violence coming out of it. This was not always the case. Anti-miscegenation laws did not get repealed in every state until the year 2000. Just shy of a quarter century ago, couples in America were getting discriminated against legally. The word "miscegenation" is not even a commonly used word today. The term "interracial" is what is widely accepted today. Now when the races are mentioned, it's to highlight the contrasts in a positive light as apposed to degrading the two in matrimony. Pictured above is singer and model John Legend and Chrissy Teigen with their children. Married since 2013 they are going on strong and do not have rioters at their house calling for their arrest or even death at their doorstep. Had this been a generation or two earlier, it would have been extremely difficult to enjoy their lives together freely.

The idea of hypodescent is a tricky one because people do not seem to agree. Sometimes if they have some ancestry then a culture will accept them but many times there's a catch to it. "Well you're black technically but how black? Which parent is the black one? Who raised you? Where are you from". All of a sudden there's requirements to claim a part of one's heritage. And that's todays standard. In the past, once you were found to have 2 different lines of cultures, you were shoved to the "lower" one class wise. Which is weird because one shouldn't be ashamed of either side but society made it seem as if they should be. Now you have mixed-culture kids and eventually adults with a self-identity crisis. Mixed race people live in a society where they are not accepted in every space as if they can control their genetic makeup. To claim multiple cultures is an even harder thing to deal with if the percentage isn't 50%. Pictured above is rapper Drake(black father & white mother) with his son Adonis. Adonis' mother is white. "So is the boy black or white? Can he claim both? Is a 75:25 ratio just too much?" These are debates grown adults are having about this 5-year old as if he cares about anything past Legos and basketball. The hypodescent concept has always been ridiculous and it has only become more controversial with time.

Phenotype – “The way genes are expressed in an organism’s physical form as a result of genotype interaction with environmental factors.” Cultural Anthropology A Toolkit for a Global Age THIRD EDITION Kenneth J. Guest

In simple terms, phenotype is the features one can see with the naked eye. People use phenotype to determine race. Skin color, eye color, bone structure, facial structure etc. This has been done for a long time and people don't realize how unreliable that is. At first glance, and even more glances after that, many people would not be able to tell the heritage of Bruno Mars(pictured above). In the last 5 years people have been caught by surprise that Bruno Mars has no known African-American ancestry. The man is Filipino, Puerto Rican and Jewish. People saw his complexion and afro and assumed he was black and that's just not the case. The same can be said for many other people. With how much humans have mixed over thousands of years, phenotype cannot be relied on to identify one's background. As easy as it is to do, it's just as easy to either ask the person or just mind your own business all together.

Blatant racism is bad but microaggressions carry their weight as well. To the untrained eye or ear it can be missed but to those aware they can feel it's swift but effective impact. Microaggressions are often overlooked because one can always argue their intent. "You're so articulate" could be a compliment but it can also be a slight because why wouldn't that person be? If you're at an interview for a job that is to be expected so why mention it? "It was math so I came to you." Why? If the two of you are in the same math class then why when you needed help you went to that particular person? Maybe their intelligence is a known thing or was it a microaggression? Microaggressions may also be subconscious. Some people have them and don't even realize it because no one ever called it out. Microaggressions can be very blunt or very sly depending on who's saying it and the circumstance. The video attached shows a few clips of a character named "Ms. Morello" from the show Everybody Hates Chris. Her character uses microaggressions in what seems like every appearance. In the first clip she mentions the "unfortunate" and decides to tap Chris' shoulder. Chris and his family are not struggling but she assumes they are anyway. Chris then asks a question about bringing in food for the food drive they're discussing and she tells him he doesn't have to bring food and follows that up with "I know this time of year must be rough for your family." Doubling down on her previous statement. This show makes the microaggressions comedy but the show is based on the real life experiences of comedian Chris Rock. So although we may laugh, this is a serious issue in reality.

White supremacy – “The belief that whites are biologically different from and superior to people of other races.” Cultural Anthropology A Toolkit for a Global Age THIRD EDITION Kenneth J. Guest

The Charlottesville riots are proof that white supremacy is still alive. White supremacy now is shunned upon because after some time people began to wakeup and realize that we are all just people, but in the past it was the regular ideology. People tried to use the Bible and science to justify the concept and to this day try to do so even still. White supremacists believe the idea that other races were born with less intellectual capabilities and are a step above gorillas. The masses have seemed to denounce that idea but many still today support in the shadows. And occasionally, on days like August 11-12 2017, they come out of the shadows and demand the reversion back to that primitive way of thinking. It seems as if hatred can blind ethics.

Individual Racism – “Personal prejudiced beliefs and discriminatory actions based on race.” Cultural Anthropology A Toolkit for a Global Age THIRD EDITION Kenneth J. Guest

Racism is a sickness. There's institutional racism but it starts with people. Individual racism manifests into institutional racism but it starts with people first. In the short film attached, All The Way Home, an older couple wants to sell their home and a black family wants to buy it. The older couple sees no issue but now the true colors of their neighbors shows. "No need to start any trouble" they say. "Why our neighborhood?" The majority of white people at the time still had this unjustified gripe with black people to put lightly. Black people can clean their stuff, raise their children and cook their food but can't live next door? So in other words "Be our slave, not our friend". It's an ill mindset than ran rapid in America and is still running rapid today. Hundreds of years of individual racism is America's ugly history. Until that issue is tackled, uprooting institutional racism will be a Goliath-sized challenge to say the least.
