Arthur was taken from Camelot by Merlin at a very very young age. Young enough that it never fully registered with him that Uther was in fact his father (not helped at all by Uther's general disdain and cold treatment of him). So when Ector told everyone that Arthur was his ward and the son of people who'd been killed in a recent bandit raid he just...believed him as well. It never even clicked with him that such a thing didn't make sense, especially as he grew older and simply forgot about living in Camelot. An easy enough thing to happen due to his age being barely four at most.

So he fully viewed Ector as his foster father and Kay as his older brother and genuinely thought he was just a peasant boy being raised out of the lord's charity. And Merlin was...a comforting presence that had been there his entire life. Not anything worth questioning, in the eyes of a child.

And then the day came when his journeys with Caliburn landed him in Camelot and...all that came afterwards.

It was a nasty shock, but Arthur never blamed Ector or Merlin for his lack of knowledge on his parentage. If anything...he wished he could have continued to not know about his relation to Uther, with how wretched the man was.

Daydreaming my own Arthurian retelling, and my desire to give Arthur the "raised in relative obscurity and ignorance of his birthright" backstory is clashing headlong into my desire to have Arthur and Morgan know each other as children in order to give their relationship as adults more depth and complexity.

Star rating: 10/10 Content warning: multiple rape scenes, heavy gore throughout, elements of horror, nudity, animal brutality (horses in battle are treated roughly) Overview: Writer and director John Boorman understood the assignment. It's evident this film was a passion project. Both of his children are in it (his daughter as Igraine, his son as young Mordred) and he had been working with J. R. R. Tolkien back in the 70s on an adaptation of Lord of the Rings which fell through, and much of those elements were revived and put to use here. The script, acting, score, and cinematography meet the epic demands an Arthurian film requires to succeed. Synopsis: The film opens with Uther before he meets Igraine and goes on to detail the entirety of Arthur's reign and life. Arthur's beginnings with Ector and Kay are very sweet and culminate in his pulling the sword in the stone and meeting a fun, quirky Merlin. The wizard trains Arthur up and he's eventually knighted by Urien and makes an ally of him while defending Leodegrance and Guinevere's castle. Arthur falls in love with Guinevere and intends to marry her, but first meets and battles Lancelot, wins his loyalty, and sends him to pick Guinevere up for the royal wedding. Meanwhile Morgan learns magic from Merlin and uses it to conceive Mordred with Arthur. After the royal wedding, the love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere begins. While staying away from Camelot, Lancelot meets country bumpkin Perceval, who follows Lancelot back to Camelot from his secluded woodland home, then takes up the mantle of Gareth Beaumains by working for Kay in the kitchens and champions Guinevere against Gawain until Lancelot can arrive. After the affair between he and Guinevere is found out, Lancelot runs off mad into the woods, and Arthur's prosperity declines. Perceval begins a decade-long quest in search of the Holy Grail to restore Arthur/Fisher King's health so he can reclaim his lands now ravaged by disease. Mordred has grown up in this time and been taught by Morgan to hate Arthur. Once Arthur has been cured, he goes to find Guinevere in the abbey where she had been living, and retrieves Excalibur, which she had been keeping safe for him all that time. Arthur then goes with his remaining knights to battle Mordred, where he is mortally wounded, and Perceval fulfills his final act for his king by returning the sword to the Lady of the Lake as Arthur is spirited away to Avalon. Final thoughts: This movie is so damn good. Nobody's doing it like Boorman. It's my favorite version of the grail quest. Very horror, as it should be. (Monty Python is a different tone, not a worse one!) I love everyone's acting here, the casting is so rich, I love the look and vibe of everyone, the Shakespearean line delivery. All of it. The gaudy green lighting is so 80s but it works, it sets a tone, it commits to the bit, illuminates every magical scene. And the armor is obviously incredible. I won't hear criticism. Either you get it or you don't. You can watch an entire mini-series about the armorer, Terry English, produced by Mythbuster's Adam Savage on YouTube, here. I decided Ector’s art looks like crazy medieval artwork because he was super sheltered growing up and mostly knows what things look like based on what his evil mom or the few books he owned taught him. During our Candlekeep campaign, Nando wants to write his own comic book about a “totally original character in no way inspired by Ector’s arch devil patron” named Zarteus and asks Ector to be his artist.

It hasn’t happened yet in-game, but I can’t wait for Arteus to find out about it.

Arthur Tidbits

Arthur is very private and so only has a small group of confidants. Those being his adoptive father Ector, his brother Kay, and his best friend Bedivere. Once Lancelot romances him, they’re quickly integrated into the circle.

Arthur isn’t very good at romantic gestures and gifts. He ends up having to ask Kay and Bedivere for advice which doesn’t always work out well. He once almost burned down the kitchen because Kay suggested baking a treat for Lancelot.

He still tries to be romantic in his own way. He’ll start dedicating some of his victories in battle and in tourneys to Lancelot (the others are dedicated to Guinevere as a political thing since she is still his queen and wife. And in the poly it becomes a love token for her too.)

He enjoys hunting with Lancelot. It gives them some privacy and the ability to just enjoy each others presence away from the court.

He likes to help Lancelot put on their armor and have them do the same to him. He finds it intimate and a sign of trust between them.

Sometimes he even lets Lancelot hold onto and practice with Excalibur.

Arthur/Guinevere Poly

Arthur had wanted to marry Guinevere from the beginning but realized quickly Guinevere was not very interested in a relationship ahe had no choice in so he knew better than to mention that to her.

He really wants children and if Guinevere and Lancelot has a child, he would consider it as his too and would name that child his heir.

Once he and Guinevere get close, they are constantly found just hanging out together in their now shared chambers. Just reading or chatting about court gossip together.

Arthur quickly adds Guinevere to their hunting trips and get Lancelot to join him in teaching Gwen how to hunt (and also to show off his skills in front of them both).

Sometimes Arthur and Lancelot will compete over who gets to wear Guinevere’s favor in a tourney. Guinevere ends up having them wear each others instead.

Lancelot’s quarters end up moved adjacent to Arthur and Gwen’s shared quarters and they’re basically unofficially moved in.

If you had to pick another disney franchise to be in the series for one crossover episode, which would it be? Maybe in a similar way to how Rapunzel was in put in one of Sofia the First's eps? What other characters could you see being entertaining, interacting with the tts crew?

This is difficult for me to answer, because I don't want a crossover, and I'm glad there wasn't one. And out of the most popular options, I'm pretty much either sick to death of seeing crossovers of them, or I don't feel like they'd actually fit in the series.

So, all things considered, I think I'll surprise everyone and say: The Sword in the Stone. Merlin would not put up with any shit from anyone, but he's also incredibly kind to those he finds deserving. Rapunzel and Varian would be extremely interested in learning from him (he's both sorcerer and scientist!) while Eugene and Lance would scope out the castle (and Eugene would possibly finally be able to throw his title around with Kay and Ector, since they've both been knighted, but Eugene technically outranks them). Cassandra, on the other hand, would be more than happy to spar with Kay and prove that she deserves to be knighted, too, despite being a woman. (That would be her whole subplot.) Kiera and Catalina would pick on Wart relentlessly, and the presence of an owl that speaks English and everyone can understand would surprise literally everyone.

Eugene would finally rescue Wart from the girls' clutches and give him a heart to heart about being more than you see yourself, and letting other people's faith in you bolster your own spirits. Varian would start grilling Merlin on whether or not he knew Demanitus, and what he was like. Rapunzel would get advice on not only how to be a good ruler, but how to handle tough situations with magic.

Oh, and then Mim would show up and it would be a party. (It's like a party with revenge is what it's like!)

(Obviously this takes place in the narrow window between Kay's knighting and Wart pulling Excalibur from the stone, but hey, the window's not THAT narrow.)

Angsty Arthurian AU Idea number ???

Reincarnation AU! Ector is raising a not-yet-remembering Arthur on his own in some off the grid small town. All alone. No Kay. Arthur had this feeling of 'something missing' his entire childhood, Ector knows who it is and has just enough of an idea what's become of Kay that it hurts a lot to think about.

They gather a bunch of local reincarnations Bedivere for sure, maybe Dinadan, Morgan, Guinevere, as Arthur is remembering and coming into his destiny. They're a small, tight knit found family scrappy low resources rebellion sort of vibe. Very fun very cool.

Now, Uther is still alive and well and running his own court/cult of personality/militant group. They and Arthur's group will come into conflict but he's also got his own agenda. Anyways one of his strongest lieutenants is Lot, who runs a powerful secret base for Uther's group, where he's "training" his sons to be Uther's perfect soldiers.

He also has Kay.

Between Lot and Uther they've made Kay into the perfect weapon against Arthur: trained since he was a baby, magic forced to it's max making him really powerful (a way to describe it i came up with comes from bedivere "The magic around him was screaming") he's supposed to be unshakably loyal. Excpt the only ones he's really loyal to are Lot's kids, to which he's become a weird sort of surrogate big brother (as much as he can). They're the only one's who treat him like a human.

Gareth absolutely hero warships Kay (though in a naive 'you're such a great knight i can't wait to serve Uther too!' kind of way that hurts Kay's soul). Anyways Kay is absolutely terrifying on the battlefield, and for a long time no one and nothing can stand in his way. Until he fights Bedivere (neither know each other's identity)

Bedivere is a solid challenge on his own, but when Kay blasts him with fire it doesn't burn Bedivere. Instead it activates some sort of magic signal bound to their souls, which protects Bedivere. Now that they know both are horror struck (for different reasons) and freeze. One of Kay's "teammates" takes a cheap shot at Bedivere, but he's warned by his team and dodges away. Making him the first to ever escape Kay.

Bedivere tells his peeps about this, which sends Ector into a dark spiral and leads Arthur to ask a lot of questions. Meanwhile, Kay is back at base and not in his armour for the first time. And he's in a cell. Gawain comes to visit, angry at Kay for freezing up, mostly because it made Lot mad. he goes on at Kay for a while before Kay finally snaps and tells him that it was Bedivere he was fighting, and on top of it the signal that save Bedi's life was one he a Kay crafted together to ensure that they couldn't hurt each other.

Which ouch. Gawain tried to apologize, but Kay's too tired for this rn and goes to sleep.

That's about as far as I've gotten linearly. Two other scenes I have in mind with Kay and Gareth-

Gareth is following Kay around while he's getting ready for a mission, mentions how he wants to be just like Kay when he grows up and Kay stops what he's doing gets down on Gareth's level and looks him in the eyes and says "Beaumains, You are going to be so much better than I ever was." (One day, in a happier world and place, where Gareth doesn't have to be anyone's soldier he remembers the first life, and he remembers this and he goes to Kay and hugs him and tells him he's still his hero)

Gareth wants very badly to go with Kay on one of his missions. So badly he teaches himself to replicate Kay's fire magic, and shows it to Kay hoping to impress him. Instead Kay freaks the fuck out and yells at him and makes him promise to never show or tell anyone about this ever again. it's the first time gareth is genuinely scared of kay. Kay hates himself for it but he can't let Lot and Uther put Gareth through the same hell that has been Kay's entire life.

This is a weird question and I totally understand if you can’t answer it but do you know or have a post explaining the ages of the knights of the round table in comparison to Arthur? It just gets confusing with some implied to be significantly younger like his son Mordred or who’s his age or who’s been there since the beginning or his brother or his (Ector) father’s age. I just found out Lancelot and Arthur are actually not around the same age? Sorry, if this question doesn’t make sense. 😅 I want to know the ages of the knights in comparison to Arthur like what characters are implied to be around his age, or much older, or significantly younger (ofc I know the legends vary) and whose ages are completely freely interpretable/can be anything. I hope this makes sense, sorry for bothering ya 😭

Not a bother at all! and the question makes perfect sense!

Unfortunately I do not think anyone's age is fixed, as far as I know! Pretty much it is a free for all, especially given that in some stories even Gawain is older than Arthur. By the fact that Mordred does not have to necessary be Arthur's son, he can also be older or of the same age.

I think the only things that are kinda stable in post-Malory canon is Ector, Pellinore, Merlin, Lot, Morgause, Morgana, Kay being older than Arthur, but a part from that, everything else is a personal choice!

Crown abandoned on his desk with any other easily recognized symbols of his status, Emrys crouched in the open window as he met Merlin's gaze. A small smile played on his lips, the pale blue cloak his mage had given him was already wrapped around his shoulder though it did little to obscure the simple clothes he was dressed in. A timeworn and faded tunic with familiar old boots.

Definitely clothes for slipping away from the responsibilities of being a king for a while.

A hand was outstretched, ungloved in this rare moment.

"I was hoping you would join me? There's a festival in that village where the best apples come from, the one next to the river. We can just go and...be ourselves for a while. Maybe even take some time to dance."

Almost certainly they wouldn't be back before daybreak but Emrys found himself not minding too much. Ector was at Camelot and could easily handle anything for a day, or maybe even two if he could convince Merlin.

Your wife.” She made a disgusted little noise, involuntarily, and Arthur, eyes lit within, laughed with surprise. “I remember Morgaus and Morgana and Mordred. I remember a battlefield and lots of blood.” Then she realized how she was admitting her guilt, and in a rush, begged, “I’m not him, though! I—don’t want to hurt you, I swear to you, I can’t bear it—”

          A kind, firm hand. Centered on the top of her head. Warm gray eyes. “I’m not angry at you for something you didn’t do, you dope. You’re a whole new person—if you were ever that person at all. If this isn’t a communal hallucination. I’ve done some research. Having multiple lives is apocryphal, and heretic. Anyway. I’m not even in love with Gwenivere yet, if there even is a Gwenivere. There is not a Kay. I mean. There’s a Kai, which, ok, but he isn’t even Ector’s son, he’s like, this weird cousin. And you’re what, maybe ten? You tiny creature, you look like you’ve been starved to death.” This was followed by a brief little shake by the shoulders. Arthur looked concerned.

Nektas is one of the realest and I wanna ride that draken’s dick because of it. This beast was instigating left right and centre, saying not but the realest and most obvious shit when they didn’t want to admit it and for that he’ll for ever be meyaah draken. Sera, Jadis and Reaver. I love, love love the relationship we see between these three. Partly because of the embers but they way they Jade and Reaver felt safe around her to shift? UNTOUCHED. The way she held Jade so close when they slept? PRECIOUS MOMENTS. And when Nek said that she probably reminded Jade of her mom, that’s why I decided that the relationship will be so much more. The bond between someone who took up the flame to be a mother figure and a daughter is unmatched and I need to see more.
