This is Nikole Hannah-Jones Pulitzer-prize winning investigative journalist announcing to Gayle King on CBS News in July 2021, that she has declined a tenured professorship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and will instead take a position as the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Reporting at Howard University, an Historical Black University (HBCU).

This is a real world scenario echoed in YA fiction in both Legendborn by American author Tracy Deonn (set at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where Bree deals with racism and exclusion at her new school whilst grieving the loss of her mother); and in Ace of Spades by British author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé (set at a fictional elite all white high school, Neveus Academy where the only two Black students are subject to increasing instances of racism and physical threat).

That young adult fiction is speaking to current times in different genres, especially those written by Black voices, is so exciting and enriching to all readers.

          “Only Merlin,” Arthur said, “but he doesn’t know about any of it. I—probed. I checked. He doesn’t remember all of it. Do you?” He then seemed to realize, given their conversation, how nonsensical this was, and attempted to blunder some apology, but Lancelot waved her hand.

          “I remember—a man. My name. My eyes. Your wife.” She made a disgusted little noise, involuntarily, and Arthur, eyes lit within, laughed with surprise. “I remember Morgaus and Morgana and Mordred. I remember a battlefield and lots of blood.” Then she realized how she was admitting her guilt, and in a rush, begged, “I’m not him, though! I—don’t want to hurt you, I swear to you, I can’t bear it—”

          A kind, firm hand. Centered on the top of her head. Warm gray eyes. “I’m not angry at you for something you didn’t do, you dope. You’re a whole new person—if you were ever that person at all. If this isn’t a communal hallucination. I’ve done some research. Having multiple lives is apocryphal, and heretic. Anyway. I’m not even in love with Gwenivere yet, if there even is a Gwenivere. There is not a Kay. I mean. There’s a Kai, which, ok, but he isn’t even Ector’s son, he’s like, this weird cousin. And you’re what, maybe ten? You tiny creature, you look like you’ve been starved to death.” This was followed by a brief little shake by the shoulders. Arthur looked concerned.

I just finished reading ‘Legendborn’ and ‘BloodMarked’ by Tracy Deonn and wow! I’m blown away by both books.

Legendborn was a perfect and outstanding 1st book of a series. It dealt with grief, trauma, racism, oppression and heritage in a way I’d never seen in a book. Well, in a YA book before.

The main character is a black, sixteen year old girl named Bree Matthews who goes to this Early College on a college campus. On Bree first night she accidentally witnesses a magical killing that is connected to this secret magical order. Bree continues to witness these magical things and she starts to believe that this Magical Order may be connected to her mother’s death. She is then introduced to Nick Davis, a member of the magical order, and learns about The Legendborn who are connected to King Arthur and his 13 knights and their battle with the Shadowborn (demons). This book has a good quick romance, some good ole rivalries & enemies, several Bi, Gay, and non binary reps. Has a lot of black history, PTSD, struggles with grief, mental health, and trauma. Definitely a 10/10 book and a book I will always recommend to other people.

“Don’t make you life about the loss. Make it about the love.” One of my favorite quotes from the book that stuck with me.

BloodMarked came in equally as good as it’s prequel. Although it did not necessarily knock me off my feet as hard as Legendborn did, but still left me utterly speechless. This book went even deeper into generational trauma, racism, and forging your own path. I also feel like we got a lot more of King Arthur, Merlin, and Lancelot. It also brought in a love triangle (which I have a lot to speak about but won’t due to spoilers. Just know I’m Team Selwyn!) The group this book follows is my favorite, Bree who is the embodiment of Black Girl Magic. William is fiercely loyal with that older brother energy. Alice who is the definition of a ride or die friend. Sad boy Selwyn who is deeply complicated, loyal, an asshole and a badass.

The endings for both books are jaw droppers. Seriously, I’m still thinking about the ending to BloodMarked!!!! Tracy Deonn truly has something so freaking special with the Legendborn Cycle. I can not wait for book #3.

In a broken world, how do you face and fix the mistakes of your predecessors?

Grail Knight, opening July 21st in Goshen, MA, is an immersive retelling of the story of the Quest for Holy Grail.  Here Sir Galahad, the last knight of the Round Table, is reimagined as a young trans girl struggling under the weight of destiny and the task of fixing her predecessors’ Camelot.  Galahad is joined on her quest by Sir Mordred, the king’s bastard, whose fate is to tear down Camelot, and Lancelot, her blood father who has done the unspeakable to ensure Camelot’s survival.  To Mordred, Galahad is a mirror of his own experience; to Lancelot, Galahad is an uncomfortable echo of his past.   Together, they seek the grail and face their entangled destinies.

The play takes place throughout the Three Sisters Sanctuary, and the audience is free to explore the enclaves and secrets of the sanctuary throughout the performance.   As an audience member, it is your choice how you follow the grail quest; the threads of the story intertwine and weave, but each character’s path is unique - who will you follow?
