End of the Year Rare Pair Challenge: Tanaka x Tsukishima, Coffee Shop AU/Paranormal AU
Rating: Teen WC: 5,886
Summary:  Tanaka and his sister inherited a cute cafe when his great aunt passed away and while he had to quit school to take care of it, he settled easily into his new life and ended up loving it. A part of that could be the fact that his dead aunt never left, haunting the coffee shop she adored and adding her special touches to the decor whenever they weren't looking. For the most part, she let Tanaka go about his business, but when Tanaka is reunited with an old kouhai and sparks start flying between them, she decides to take matters into her own hands to push them along.

39. Spin the Bottle kiss + TanaTsuki! :D I get so excited when you open these up, he he he
I’m glad you like them! I love doing them too.
AO3
The prompt list if anyone wants to request anymore!
Tsukishima didn’t blame them for having a bit of childish fun, he just didn’t understand why they had to do it in his garage.  Granted it was a big space, a converted barn so they could store machinery and the few vehicles they had managed to scrape together over the years.  They could have done it in the canteen or the dormitories.  Now he had to listen to them giggle and squeal as they played spin the bottle.  Out of all the games they could have played they decided to do that one.
Besides for a couple snarky comments and a well placed glare or two when they got too loud, Tsukishima stayed out of it.  Mostly because Yamaguchi was involved and Tsukishima had a hard time denying his oldest friend anything even before everything happened.  Winter was coming to a close and a bad flu had spread throughout their camp.  Yamaguchi had nearly died and Tsukishima hadn’t even been allowed to see him, everyone who fell ill was quarantined.
If it hadn’t been for the runners they would have lost a lot of people.  Going on supply runs were dangerous enough, going on them in the dead of winter when half the runners were ill was practically a death march.  It didn’t help that all the medical supplies outside of large hospitals in main cities had already been raided and everyone knew those places were ground zero, no-go at all.
The runners weren’t supposed to go hit up one of those hospitals but of course they did.  Runners were out of their minds, most of them were fast and strong with little to no fear.  Sawamura kept them grounded but anyone who knew the oldest runner knew he was just as crazy as the rest and it had been his idea to hit a city hospital.  They had succeeded, though at a great cost to themselves.  They had come back limping, exhausted, dehydrated, half starved and even more out of their minds than they had started off with.  The runners never talked about what they saw outside the safety of their zone, but Tsukishima knew.
Tsukishima was a half decent medic but a better mechanic.  He had been a runner for many years until the tremors in his hands became a liability to those who needed him to either patch them up or have their backs.  So now Tsukishima took care of most of the mechanical needs and his job was to figure out why the jeep the runners used was overheating.
A cheer went up as the barn door opened, letting in a blast of frigid air and even more yells to close it quickly.  Tsukishima fiddled with a wire as he saw out of the corner of his eye a tall, lone figure stroll up to the large group playing spin the bottle.
“You spin Ryuu!”  Hinata cheered, making room for the larger man.  Hinata was one of those crazy runners, along with Tanaka.  For a long time no one had any faith that Hinata would survive the job, but the other runners always looked out for him.  He might have been clumsy and too loud at first but he was one of the best now.  Small and quicker than anyone else, he could get in and out of a place before anyone would notice.
“Let me show you how it’s done!”  Tanaka boasted, as loud as usual.  There was laughter as the bottle spun then completely silence.  Tsukishima only looked over when he heard Hinata’s sputtered laughter.
“I’m not playing.”  Tsukishima said when he saw the bottle was pointed at him.  “Unlike some people, I’m working.”  He specifically looked at the still laughing Hinata and then over to Tanaka.
“If you refuse to do the kiss then you have to have to do a dare.”  Yamaguchi, the traitor, spoke up.  He was bundled up and sitting the closest to the heater, his voice was still raspy from the fading sickness and he was leaning heavily on Kageyama, who looked about as done with the game as Tsukishima was.
“Shut up Yamaguchi.”  Tsukishima snapped but there was no real heat in his words.
“Sorry Tsukki.”  Yamaguchi mumbled though they both knew he really wasn’t.
The door opened once more to reveal most of the runners.  Kuroo and Bokuto had also fallen sick like Yamaguchi, laid up in a quarantine building waiting to die as their lungs filled with fluid and slowly drowned them.  Sawamura stood a little in front of them and looked around the barn.
“It’s getting late, everyone pack up and head in.”  Sawamura ordered and everyone quickly got up to obey.  Sawamura held the same authority over the rest of safe zone as he did over his runners.  No one ever questioned an order from him, he had worked diligently for the camp to make sure it was safe and they had everything they needed to survive.
Bokuto and Kuroo had been in their own camp, though from the bits and pieces Tsukishima gathered it hadn’t been all that safe.  If they left for the unknown and nightmare world around them then it must have been bad.  Sawamura had picked up the small group and brought them here.  Tsukishima didn’t mind Akaashi or Kozume but Bokuto had a tendency to be on the same level as Hinata and Tsukishima only needed one Hinata in his life.  Kuroo seemed to be set on making Tsukishima’s life miserable.
“Spin the bottle.”  Bokuto cheered before coughing, the deep rattling kind of cough that made Tsukishima cringe in sympathy.  Kuroo patted Bokuto on the back before adjusting  his knitted cap back over the other man’s ears.
“You don’t even know what spin the bottle is Kou.”  Kuroo stated but that, neither the coughing fit, seemed to curb Bokuto’s enthusiasm.  Sawamura had moved off to the side to talk quietly to Tanaka, who’s dark eyes were concentrated on his leader as he nodded and accepted a bag from Sawamura.
Tsukishima looked away because he was not jealous.  He knew the bond between Tanaka and Sawamura was nothing romantic or even something resembling that.  Both men might have known others longer but they were the only ones left of the original runners.  It bred an unbreakable level of loyalty and trust between the two, a deep love shared between them.
“You sit in a circle, spin the bottle and the person has to kiss whoever the bottle points to or they have to do a dare if they pass.”  Tsukishima spoke up, finding it a little sad that Bokuto didn’t even know what a simple adolescent game was.
“Oh.”  Bokuto said before leaning down to spin the bottle.  It stopped at a wall but he nudged it to point at Sawamura.  “Dai, we have to kiss now.”  Bokuto coughed into his thick scarf before giving Sawamura a big grin over the edge.
“You’re still sick.”  Sawamura said and Tsukishima found it interesting that he didn’t outright say no.
“Fine, then kiss Tetsu.”  Bokuto rasped out.  Kuroo wiggled his eyebrows at an unimpressed looking Sawamura.
“Pass.”  Sawamura deadpanned before squeezing Tanaka’s shoulder on his way out.
“Okay then I dare you to kiss Tetsu.”  Bokuto tried again, following after Sawamura.
“Hard pass.”  Sawamura answered automatically but didn’t stop Bokuto from moving his arm so Bokuto could huddle close against the biting wind.  Kuroo brought up the rear, not looking at all insulted that he was a hard pass.
Nobody ever said anything about the three of them.  Sure there was gossip but most just let them do as they pleased.  Tsukishima knew it had to do with the loyalty Sawamura instilled in everyone, but mostly everyone just wanted their de facto leader to find happiness.  Even if it was with a loudmouth and a weirdo.
“Here.”  Tanaka put the bag down on the exposed engine and Tsukishima wasn’t even surprised that there was food in it.  Even on his off hours Sawamura still took care of everyone around him, and he would have known that Tsukishima had been in the makeshift garage all day now doing repairs.  “But first, I think you owe me a kiss.”
Tsukishima turned to Tanaka, who was grinning widely like he expected Tsukishima to pass.  Tanaka still looked like he was suffering from his last run.  He had lost weight, which showed in his face, the bones pressing against skin and making him look even more dangerous than he already did.  Dark circles beneath his bloodshot eyes betrayed the lack of sleep he was getting, his lips looked chapped and painful.
Tsukishima curled his hand into Tanaka’s scarf, pulling him forward and enjoying the extra height even if Tanaka still outweighed him.  Surprise registered on Tanaka’s face before Tsukishima pressed his lips against Tanaka’s.
It wasn’t the first kiss they had shared, though Tsukishima couldn’t really pinpoint when this had started or why.  Tanaka was everything Tsukishima thought he hated.  Loud, outgoing, brash, easily excitable, full of energy, the list went on.  But somehow they had gotten here, with Tanaka’s cold fingers cupping Tsukishima’s face, tilting his head to get a better angle as the kiss deepended.
When the second week passed and the runners hadn’t returned everyone had feared the worst.  With half the camp fallen to illness and the runners missing, hope had been a hard thing to find.  Tsukishima could not have handled the lost of Yamaguchi but the thought of losing Yamaguchi and Tanaka had paralyzed Tsukishima.
Another four whole days passed before the runners appeared in the dead of night.  The medicine had been handed over and the runners had gone off into their own bunker, except for Tanaka.
Tsukishima spent all but the coldest nights in the barn and Tanaka and crawled into bed with him that night.  Tsukishima hadn’t been asleep, it felt like months since he had last slept well, but he had welcomed Tanaka with barely a word.  Tsukishima knew what it was like to come back to the camp, to finally feel safe once again but knowing what hell waited beyond their walls.
Tsukishima pressed Tanaka up against the jeep, wanted to leave his imprint on the other man, wanted to be marked by Tanaka in some way.  Tanaka, as always, seemed to understand and welcomed the less than gentle kisses and the grip that was most likely to leave marks behind.

Okay so hear me out on this TsukiTana hc please
Tsukishima and Tanaka fight over what to call eachother after their siblings are engaged. Tsukishima wants to just continue calling him “Tanaka-san” but Tanaka refuses, (truth be told he’s always wanted a little brother to bug around) so he gives Tsukishima two options, to call him by his first name Ryu or call him senpai. Tsukishima refuses. Besides it’s not like we’re even close anyway
And that just breaks Tanaka’s heart because he actually started enjoying seeing Tsukishima and Akiteru around the house and vise-versa, but seems like Tsukishima really doesn’t care about him. So he leaves, and his sister is confused wondering where her brother is since she had already set the table.
So Tanaka goes over to Nishinoya and Asahi’s place for advice and maybe just a little time to cool off, Asahi says that it’s best if he talked it out with Tsukishima now that their siblings are going to be married, and how it was sort of sweet that he wanted to be close with him. Nishinoya agrees, thinking that Tsukishima’s probably just a little awkward over it and is pulling off that cute tsundere shit. Tanaka nods after thinking it over. He comes back in the middle of the night, his sister scolding him (Tanaka: I’m not in high school anymore, sis) She basically tears him a new one. He storms straight to his room where Tsukishima is laying on his bed reading a book. Not an odd occurrence anymore for the both of them. Awkwardly, Tanaka moves towards the bed, and lays down beside him facing the wall while his face was half smashed in his anime-girl pillow.
‘You left’ He heard Tsukishima say, but he doesn’t say anything back wondering where he would go with this and if there was any point, ‘‘You left, and I had to go through dinner as a third wheel, you said that now that we’re together I would never have to go through that way again. That wasn’t nice Ryu’
It takes Tanaka 5 whole seconds to register what just happened, snapping his head up suddenly. Tsukishima practically jumps at his expression cause holy shit was that scary, “don’t do that!”
Tanaka is staring at him with his mouth half-open, heat flaring from his nostrils for a while before his face hits the pillow again, his face was suddenly really red at this point “Sorry....” He just didn’t know how happy that made him, “Kei...”
And Tsukishima could only blink.... he would have went with a ‘that was gross dont use my first name’ like he usually did with everyone else but that totally wasn’t gross and oh brother [literally] this isn’t good

Cats in the Coffee Shop
Me: *Once again pretends I know how to write Haikyuu!!*
Y’all: *Let me dream*
AO3
To be fair they did tell him this would happen, but Tsukki still can’t believe it actually happened. He wouldn’t have taken the job if they were dead serious about the guy with three cats who stops by in the mornings. He’s in too deep now to just quit, and with the black cat currently staring him down as he prepares the man’s mocha he feels like if he did leave they would find him anyway.
It’s not so bad as it is just really unnerving to have so many cats about watching him.Tsukki may be spectacularly terrible with animals but to be able to have at least three cats trail behind you happily is a whole new level of weird. The only thing weirder is how excited the guy ,Tanaka Ryuu-something, can be in the mornings.
He always talks with Tsukki despite the lackluster replies he gets in return. Because of this Tsukki knows all the cats names, how Tanaka found them, and their little habits. He couldn’t forget even if he wanted to with how proudly Tanaka talks about them everyday. It’s like the cats are his kids and Tanaka the proud cat father. Still it’s better conversation than what other customers give.
[Obviously he’s not human...]
Tsukki texts his boredom relief one day during his break to voice this theory. Kuroo has demanded that Tsukki keep him updated on everything that is Tanaka and his hoard of cats. Tsukki has become a master at snapping secret photos no thanks to Kuroo’s terrible influence.
[They are just cats Tsukki it really isn’t that hard to get them to listen to you.
You don’t listen to shit I say
You don’t give enough treats.
Fair enough.]
--
Tsukki yawns tiredly as he finishes setting down all the chairs in the shop and opening the front door. It’ll be about five minutes before they actually open but Tsukki is ahead of schedule this time and already has the cat food dishes filled and ready. As always Tanaka arrives not even a minute later but something is very different this morning.
[SIX! He has SIX cats this time!]
Tsukki texts Kuroo quickly when he turns around to start on the routine mocha, rules be damned there are six cats tumbling about as he’s trying to work. How can he not text about this?
[Holy shit that’s amazing!
No Kuroo it is in fact not amazing! Never mind forget I said anything!]
Tsukki scoffs at his phone and shoves it back in it’s safe place. Kuroo is no help at all and he’s only made his morning with that text. Tsukki focuses on just making the coffee and getting back to a normal work environment. Tanaka is leaning against the counter as always and introducing Tsukki to the new cats.
“This here is Kuma he finally decided to walk with us today.” Tanaka says as he picks up a large brown scruffy cat that does indeed resemble a bear. The cat gives Tsukki a raspy deep meow in greeting before Tanaka gently sets him down. The next cat is a calico cat for some reason named Paint that just decided to follow them for no damn reason.
“And last but not least is...” Tanaka trails off when realizes that the last cat isn’t with the group. Panic is clear in his eyes as he stoops low to see if he can find the last cat. Tsukki looks up just in time to spot a lump of orange moving upwards then suddenly falling down. He clears the counter in one jump before he can even think twice about what he’s doing. Tsukki manages to catch the kitten in his hands and shield it as he crashes into the tacky bookshelf used to house ugly nicknacks.
“You little shit.” Tsukki huffs at the kitten in his arms clinging to him for dear life. The kitten meows loudly at Tsukki before nuzzling closer getting comfortable. Tsukki snorts and hands the kitten back to Tanaka who has been apologizing and complimenting Tsukki’s quick thinking the whole time.
“It was no problem but-.” Tsukki isn’t able to finish as Tanaka suddenly slams his hand against the wall by Tsukki’s face effectively stopping the bookshelf from falling on top of him. Tsukki can only blink as Tanaka uses one hand to push the heavy wooden shelf back into place. ‘I can’t move that thing without help... has this guy always been so strong?’ Tsukki wonders while he tries to not stare at Tanaka’s flexing arms.  Their faces are terribly close and Tsukki should not be so flustered by any of this.
“Sorry about that! I just reacted without thinking.” Tanaka chuckles, mirth dancing in his blue-gray eyes. He pulls away and allows Tsukki to get back to work while he tidies up the bookshelf. Tsukki can only vaguely follow what Tanaka is saying to him as things slowly settle down. Between the short adrenaline rush and Tanaka unintentionally being extremely hot Tsukki is finding it hard to focus.
“So what food do you like the best?” Tanaka asks, the first thing that manages to get through to Tsukki.
“Huh? Oh Strawberry shortcake is cool I guess.” Tsukki replies while handing Tanaka his drink. Tanaka accepts it and in return Tsukki is given a slip of paper. He can see the beginnings of a phone number on it plus a shitty cat doodle.
“Awesome I know the perfect place! Then it’s a date!” Tanaka says happily. With a wave goodbye and a wink Tanaka is gone before Tsukki can say anything. It doesn’t quite catch up to Tsukki what just happened until his break of the day starts.
[I think I have a date with the dude who has 6 cats?
You always get the best guys...]
