This came so naturally, I’m not sure if it’s what you were hoping for but it just flowed out of my hands!

Warnings: a little smut, age gap, not proofread

Lenny had met you when you were spending a year in Paris, having taken a French degree that required you to spend a year abroad as a part of your study. It took some convincing for you to go out on a date with the older man, but he was persistent and eventually won you over. After he had taken you to dinner at Le Meurice, picking up the tab himself, he had walked you home and sent flowers to your tiny chamber de bonne the next day along with a note thanking you for your company. The fact that he was old didn’t mean he was dull or sleazy as you had feared, it meant that he was a hopeless romantic who knew how to treat a woman properly. The next time you met he had taken you for a picnic in the Jardin Du Luxembourg, complete with amazing French cheeses and a bottle of expensive champagne. It was fair to say that pretty soon you were hooked. Everyone always said that you were mature for your age anyway, so the concept of the age gap quickly became irrelevant to you.

A year later and you had finished your degree. When it got towards the end of your time studying in France Lenny had taken the risk of proposing you after taking you back to Le Meurice like he had on your first date. You hadn’t thought before saying yes, he put in for a transfer to be near you whilst you finished your degree and life continued in your strange state bliss.

You tied the knot quite quickly after that, getting married in a small service. His parents had both passed and he was an only child. Neither had much in the way of family, but you had agreed to a wedding in the church where he had grown up in Hawaï, though he wouldn’t admit it you knew that it made him feel close to his parents. You had the perfect white dress and he was in uniform, a hang over from the days when he had been climbing the ranks of Navy SEALs before he had been recruited into the CIA. As there were so few people you didn’t bother having a proper reception, he opted to take you to the beach where he had spent his time as a child, eating cheap burgers as your wedding breakfast and replacing the lights of a dance floor with the soft glow of the stars above you.

After this you moved to New York, he was promoted and took over a senior intelligence post, stationed in the city. He was in and out of the UN meeting with his counterparts, meeting all kinds of people. You knew he worked so hard because he wanted to prove he was worthy of you, his young and beautiful wife. You were remarkably proud of him, even if he found it hard to believe it. He was smart and had invested some of what his parents had left him into the stock market back when he was in the navy and used it to buy a beautiful apartment on the Upper East Side. It had a beautiful kitchen diner where you would attempt to cook together, often ending up in resorting to ordering takeout after Lenny decided that it would be a good idea to modify your recipes. There was something beautifully domestic about this life, it was still unpredictable but safe. Lenny refused to tell you much about his past because he didn’t want you to view him differently, but he gave up the guns and the action so he could live a safe life with you, finally letting himself rest.

After having seen so many horrible things he would want to protect you from the harshest realities of the world. You were young and innocent and so perfect for him, he didn’t want to taint that. He would never let an argument go unresolved before you went to bed. On the rare occasion that you had a proper row he would usually cave first and give you your way. He would usually be so in control of himself, but when he did shout it was harsh and loud, it always terrified you and as soon as he saw the look on your face he would cave. He could never stand the thought of you being afraid of him.

Arguments would often end in the bedroom, he would be the gentlest lover after a fight, peppering kisses along your collarbones before slowly moving down your body. He would be attentive, bringing you over the edge as many times as he could with his hands and his tongue until he had finally made it up to you. Only then would he seek any pleasure for himself, sheathing himself within you and moving so gently it would be as if you were made of porcelain. He’d be terrified of hurting you after seeing you so vulnerable earlier.

There could be another side of him in bed though. A raw and passionate one that came out after a difficult day at work. You learnt how to bring it out yourself over time, how to tease him with subtle touches at the work galas that he took you to and how he could never control himself when he saw you in just your lingerie and a pair of Louboutins. On those nights he would go for rounds at a time. Voracious, like a starving man at a banquet. He delighted in having you spread out below him, completely vulnerable to him and at his mercy. You always looked so small from that angle, he could do anything he wanted to you, and moreover he knew that you would let him and enjoy it. No matter how hard he took you though, he always ended with his head buried in the crook of your neck, whispering passionate prose into your ear and telling you how precious you were to him, how he would never let any harm come to you.

He managed to temper his protective tendencies well. Although both of you knew that it wasn’t a necessity, you found a job working in a little bookshop a few days a week, something to occupy your time. He was always anxious that something from his past would come back to haunt him, to haunt you, but he did his best to keep his worries separate from your life together. On account of your age difference, he was forced to confront the fact that there were things that you would want to do that he had left in the past, many years ago. You had a tight circle of friends that you would go with for nights out - clubbing, dancing and drinking in dives that he would never go into. He would never do anything to stop you, he would want you to live a life as full as you would have without him. Still, he couldn’t help it if he had to stay up until 3:00 am to make sure that you got home safe.

You had a beautiful life together in New York, it was something that you had built together, brick by brick. Every day he found himself falling deeper in love with you. He often said that he would probably have ended up dead in an abandoned corner of some far off land if he hadn’t had you to force him out of his ways. He pushed so hard for so long yet in you, your fragility and youth, he had finally made something to make him slow down. He finally understood the meaning of the phrase - you were the love of his life

- Huge environmentalist, if you put any garbage or recycling in the wrong bin expect to get at least a three hour lecture, no you can not escape this, yes MK and Mei have tried, no they did not succeed

- ONLY shops from farmers markets/family businesses, you will never catch this man supporting a corporation

- Use to steal Tang's college hoodies

- Took him the longest to get used to having Redson around and a part of the group , but eventually warmed up to him (is still kinda salty about Redson burning MK's room though)

- Grows his own herbs

- Gets incredibly frustrated when he gets the hiccups (writing this as I'm fighting off hiccups)

- Loves watching true crime shows and listening to true crime podcasts while he does household chores or while he's setting up/closing the shop

- Got his ears pierced with Tang

- MK and Mei call him mom when he's being overbearing, Tang calls him mom now too to tease him

- Once caught Mei and MK sneaking food out of the kitchen at 3am and beat them with a broom for a solid minute because he was too drowsy to recognize them and assumed they were intruders (they were fine)

- Is the type of person to call his husband (Tang) "bro", "dude" etc

- Got drunk in college once and talked about nothing but how much he loved Tang, didn't remember any of it the next day but Tang asked him out pretty quickly after that

- Exchanged a few recipes with DBK while they were at the beach, they still do exchange more recipes once in a while but they don't talk much outside of cooking related topics

- Learned how to play dnd in college because Tang liked the game and ended up liking it a lot more than he expected to so they wound up playing together all the time (they still play it once in a while if they have time)

- Him and Sandy get together every other weekend to try and help Pigsy with his anger management issues

- Never called MK his son while he was growing up because he was scared that MK's real family would show up one day to take him back home, finally realized that no one was gonna show up a short while after MK turned 10 and started acting like an actual parent (MK always saw Pigsy as his dad though)

- Always says "this is the last time" when giving Tang free noodles (it is never gonna be the last time, and Tang knows it)

- Once bumped into a mannequin at the mall and apologized to it, Tang still makes fun of him

- Use to take Mei and MK to conventions all the time until Mei learned how to drive and could take them herself

- Won't care for people getting hurt in movies but will be absolutely crushed if something happens to an animal (sobbed when he watched "A Dog's Purpose")

- Used to have hexagon glasses cause he thought they looked cool but found out Pigsy liked circular ones better so he got new ones

- Still has a septum piercing he got while he was in college but keeps it flipped up, he also has ear gauges

- When he met Pigsy's parents he was super nervous and ended up passing out half way through the night because of anxiety, he has not lived it down and refuses to go to any events with Pigsy if his family is gonna be there (they actually really liked him and are disappointed when he doesn't show up)

- Doesn't own a bookshelf for some reason, everything is just piled on the floor

- Needs a daily 'to do' list, his whole day gets thrown off if he doesn't have some kind of schedule

They intend to make the monster hunter share their pain, but the hunter is so much more ragged and tired then they remember. It seems they’ve become broken and scarred all on their own.

8. Knowing that planet earth is about to be destroyed, a group of aliens breaks protocol and abducts a few hundred humans in order to preserve the race. However, the humans, whether uninformed or wracked with grief are none too happy about this development. The ship’s captain tries to keep them isolated to one area of the ship, believing it will be easier to them adjust to one factor at a time, but one of the humans is always escaping, and searching the captain out. The captain is still only semi-fluent in human, but their addresses usually involve a lot of shrieking and spitting.

9. Vampires are merciless, bloodthirsty monsters; the vampire Hunter knows this from much experience. So why are they having such a hard time finishing this one? Pretty hair and a sunshiny attitude are not reason enough!

10. The detective is the only thing standing in the way of the criminal’s success and freedom. They should take this chance, catching the detective helpless and off guard, to get rid of them permanently. But…the detective has also been the only constant in their life for years. They’ve dedicated so much time to impressing and thwarting them and the detective so much time to chasing them. Maybe they shouldn’t rush it and keep hold of them a little longer.

11. A royal is almost assassinated and the hitman is put in the dungeons. The royal insists on talking to their would-be-killer themselves and what starts as an interrogation transforms into a daily storytelling session, with the royal hounding the assassin for information about the outside world. As the assassin’s execution date looming, the trapped royal’s desire to leave grows. If anyone could take them away from this place, it would be assassin, but can that trust them not to finish the job they were hired for?

12. After kidnapping Sidekick multiple times as leverage, it is Villain’s turn to be a hostage. In all their captures, Sidekick discovered a familial connection between Villain and Supervillain, and with Supervillain on the verge of mass destruction, Sidekick is going to exploit it. Surrender or Villain will be killed. Except Sidekick has no experience with hostages and is relying on all of Villain’s advice on how to keep them secure. At first it’s manipulation, but after a while…Villain doesn’t really want to leave anymore.

Game studios aren't monoliths. They're giants with feet of clay.

Clay is brittle by default, so it follows that time wouldn't be favorable to something as complex as a game studio's structure. People leave, leads change, priorities shift, success lands you under the watchful eye of AAA developers with very specific success metrics - and increasingly - decisions come from top-down. What eventually started as "Let's honor the IP to the best of our ability" turns into "Let's wrangle the IP to fit the perceived needs of the market".

It wouldn't be that bad if the bean-counters had a decent sense of perspective. If Suicide Squad had been pitched as an alternate take or a deliberate departure heralding something more true-to-form, then I suspect the overall reception would've been kinder. It wasn't, though. Someone, somewhere at WB Games clearly thought that what the Arkhamverse needed after the open-ended epilogue of Arkham Knight was Harley Quinn busting a cap in Batman's ass - permanently.

Back in 2022, Sefton Hill and Jaimie Walker left the studio they'd created, citing internal conflicts. That should've been enough to signal to the market that Rocksteady was changing, going from a story-focused developed to another Live Service provider with some truly baffling design choices for their ongoing content. Kill the Justice League isn't quite as bad as Redfall - it's at least mechanically functional and properly optimized - but it sacrifices everything that played to Rocksteady's strengths for a me-too design structure - and a complete miss of the better, more effective ways to leverage Amada Waller's volatile little quartet.

I'm reminded of Volition Studios, for instance, and of Saints Row - especially in the later entries. Cheerfully antisocial behavior is the name of the game, here, and you're expected to laugh at characters designed from the ground up to be comedically brutal, but the structure gives them all the same basic move set with only traversal-related perks that distinguish them. You're supposed to laugh at flashy mass-murderers, and all that offers them a clear sense of personality is kept to cutscenes - as everything else is obviously server-based. Mechanically, it's simply and fundamentally unimpressive. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination - but bland.

Of course, the central pitch was always going to be controversial: Brainiac's taken Metropolis hostage and has hijacked the Justice League's members to use them as his frontline henchmen, and Waller's band of repropbates are implausibly the only ones tough enough to not only reach the city, but stop the alien's aggressive attempt at conversion. If you're familiar with Brainiac, his whole schtick involves the destruction of his own home planet, Colu, and his relentless attempts to terraform Earth into a facsimile of his lost home. Mental control is part of his usual repertoire, and so he manages to outplay even the team's terminal paranoid - Batman, natch - and leaves only a frazzled Wonder Woman and an embattled Flash to try and oppose him. Story events unfold that make it clear neither of them are going to be of much help, and so you're left with Arkhamverse regulars twisting their celebrated roles to fit the tone.

On that aspect, the game is far too eager to leverage the late Kevin Conroy's acting range in his last turn as the Dark Knight. Obviously, Bruce Wayne with his brain thrown out of whack by an alien turns into an impulsive, controlling and vindictive sociopath - enough to make even Harley Quinn pocket her smart-assery for the occasion, and you're left with a would-be nerve-wracking inversion on the premise that, well, the Batman doesn't kill anyone. Being briefly hunted down the way you, yourself hunted down Quinn and the Joker's goons in the first two Arkham games feels novel, and the second go-around against Batman has you try and find ways to counter the Bat's usual strategy of casting an area of engagement in shadows. The problem is that this is as novel as Suicide Squad ever gets. There's something fun to hearing Conroy really chew the scenery as Evil Batman - but it's always in the understanding that for most people, this is more or less a cardinal sin.

I mean, it's not like it's the first time that we've heard or seen members of the Justice League flip their banners, practically every decade comes with a limited series from DC Comics where someone wants to explore that were to happen if one of the company's tentpoles effectively snapped. The best one in my opinion would have to be Batman: Metal, where the series leverages its obsession on parallel Earths to show us a world where the Bat makes Joker come across as sane. The Batman Who Laughs was a smart inversion of the character - but it wasn't permanent. As far as the Arkhamverse is concerned, for now - it's curtains for Bruce Wayne. It feels like an attempt at an inspired twist, but it also feels like an attempt at a twist offered up by one of those bean-counters I mentioned above.

So the tone fails, the structure's a letdown - and the UI is a complete and utter mess. Previous games in the series kept their info sparse, effective and timely, whereas SSKtJL feels obligated to take the worst aspects out of the Live Service trend and put them front-and-center. Attacks result in a barrage of crit indicators, meaningless numbers, flashes, counter indicators - and all of it is lost in the glow of tracer rounds, erratic enemy movement - and the apparent need to oppose the earlier games' methodic approach to movement with every Streamer-obsessed kid's need for relentless, arcadey and twitch-based combat.

When the first screen that comes up after pressing Play is Steam urging you to use a controller to play a PC open-world title, you know something's wrong. And speaking of open worlds - there's nothing there! Metropolis' ruined expanse has no purpose other than to funnel players from Point A to Point B, there aren't any collectibles, no reasons to explore - and progression is wholly and completely focused on combat.

The overall impression I'm getting circles back to my opinion on some games being designed by executives. Previous titles wanted you to explore Gotham or Arkham, to assess the environment's character, to figure out your place in it and to carve it for yourself using precise and methodical means. They were made with the idea that you'd care, and that you'd spend months lost in this particular Batman's Gothic and moody realm. Now? Now, you're going to see all there is to see in a handful of hours, and then the execs are going to drum their plans, as if the efforts to turn Shadow of War's late-game loop into a persistent affair hadn't turned out to be a failure.

You see, you can't just wipe the floor with Brainiac and wipe your hands clean of it all. Nope; you have to do it thirteen times to effectively kill the Justice League. That means grinding the same zones over and over, and exposes just how little content there really is. They want you hooked, because up until recently, Actiblizz had its hands on a winner with Destiny 2. That makes WB Games see dollar signs.

So, you're left with a sign of things to come, really - and the impression that if you were one of those that braved the controversies and played Hogwarts Legacy, you can expect the sequel to tout the same end-game mechanic to further legitimize the first game's use of player levels and item rarity levels.

As far as WB Games is concerned, apparently, if it ain't a Live Service, it's not worth it. Tell that to the people at Bungie who were recently laid off, or to the people quietly let go from Halo Infinite's design treadmill.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League fails primarily because it was designed not by passionate fans, but by trend-chasers. The fans left Rocksteady in little bursts after Hill and Walker's departure.

It's a garishly painted-up corpse presented to you with the expectation that you'll only really get it if you lower your expectations at the absolute bare minimum and accept that you'll have to grind your way to a complete storyline.

I'm not usually one for hyperbolic statements, but the real victims here aren't the Justice League - some other idiot with a pen and a Marketing degree could figure out they'd better resurrect Conroy's Batman and the rest of the gang for the next go-round.

The real victims are Rocksteady themselves.
