i generally forgive sinetron for being what it is because of the compelling (and hot, did i mention theyre all very hot) antagonists. however, i dont think catatan harian istri deserve praise even if the acting and writing of the antagonist was superb. because, it was adapted from a short story collection of the same name. and the short story was based on real people's experiences. i read the novel yknow, it was one of the few "nonfiction" books in my school mosque's bookshelf. yes, i was a religious girl in highschool, shut up. anyway, it was actually a pretty heartfelt exploration on misogyny, religion, and trauma from a woman's perspective. and to see it being twisted into your average prime time soap opera with all of the sexism in the genre was deeply offensive. plus, it was just a bad adaptation in general. it should have had a rotating cast depicting different types of dysfunctional home life every episode. but they force to cram all of the different bad things that happen in the book into one family.

So. I don't know if y'all know this, but there's a serialized HP ripoff made by a small Indonesian production (and afaik no money went to JKR) and I have watched the first 4 of 40 episodes and. God. It's fucking hilarious. Everything is localized, the CGI is atrocious, and tbh I spent my time watching it either cringing or wheezing my lungs out. It's definitely entertaining. Is it plagiacy? Perhaps. Does it incovenience anyone (the og creators)? Eh, I doubt that. The production is just way too small and cheap to do anything.

Anyway, I want to and WILL talk about it below the cut. (Mostly screenshots)

EDIT: There's a typo. I've only watched 2 episodes, not 4

1. Characters

Since all of them are renamed with Indonesian names, I'll write them down and I'll use those renamed version to talk about them.

Harry = Alfa

Ron = Rey

Hermione = Vega

Dumbledore = Aldebaran

Hagrid = Megantara (Gantara/Tentara)

McGonagall = Agni

Snape = Purwa

Malfoy = Tommy

There are more characters ofc but these are the prominent ones.

2. Screenshots I took (DISCLAIMER: I watched it with 360p quality so the screenshots honestly look trash)

This is Megantara going into Alfa's house to bring him to Bineka, the magic school in this series. Since Alfa's aunt slammed the door on his face, he lets out a magical burp that blows the doors off their hinges. They hit Alfa's aunt and knock her unconscious. Shit's hilarious.

Anyway, this is one of the many localization in this series. Basically Alfa is asking permission to go by pressing his uncle's hand to his forehead. It's a gesture of respect for older people here.

Also, the uncle is supportive in the end. Though where tf is Alfa's cousin I don't know. He was in a scene at the start.

Instead of a magical alley, we got a traditional market. Instead of a wand shop, we got a fruit vendor. Instead of a British old man with cryptic talks, we got an Engkoh-engkoh (Chinese uncle - a way to call a Chinese shop owner if he's a guy). Instead of an elegant and over the top wand-choosing ritual, we got Alfa choosing fruits at random and hoping one of it turns to a wand. He got his from a banana. I think this is W.

I love them 🥺 Megantara has the vibes of a country-crosses uncle that always brings back treats for you

First of all, the uniform is so cute I'm SO going to make a fanart of them all in it. Second, the KIDS!!! They're so round. Vega's accessories are kind of clashing, but she's a kid let her be

What I like about Purwa is that throughout the 2 episodes I have watched, his expression is ALWAYS a tired, confused one as if he's always out of the loops. I don't know what his problem is, but I really appreciate this "... ha?" face.

So I've been watching 2 dramas. One is a sinetron with like, crazy ass plot. And the other is a chinese drama about Wu Zetian. So I kinda just doodled this based on those shows.

This drama is so crazy I love it. The editing is trash, the dialogue is wonky, the whole package. I'm mostly just watching it for the clothing/architecture reference, but maybe I can pull some plot out of it too.

also another soap opera i like was this: two sisters, theyre both in love with the same man. the man only reciprocrates the little sister's feelings. they get married. but on the day of the wedding, the older sister tried to kill herself so the wedding was off and the husband gets married to the eldest instead.

the eldest was a piece of shit. which is to say, she is the only one busting off her acting skills and being the most memorable character from that entire 500 episode mess. i think she made realize im into girls. anyways, a list of her atrocities :

-take over her husband's business, steal his riches, and threaten to fire him when he wants divorce.

-paralyzed her mother from the neck down

-roofies her husband and raped him so she could baby trap him. the husband got so angry he pushed her off the pool and then she screamed and flail and pretended she was drowning.

-her baby comes out with three heads so she strangled it to death.

-her second baby comes out with three eyes so she discarded them to her sister.

-surprise surprise. the child ends up as a good person from her sisters' care. this is actually a pretty baller move since it was 2012 and people were afraid of the end of the world. some tv stations are already showing arts of what dajjal (the equivalent of the antichrist) might look like, and the bastard was often depicted with one eye, either on the right like a normal person or smack dab on his forehead.

-also the antagonist went into a mental hospital and run away twice. it was the most deeply ableist shit i have ever watched. meanwhile her one eyed daughter got kidnapped by a circus

-she ended up getting an infection that made doctors amputate her arm, lost her entire business, then die getting hit by a car.

it was such a terrible soap opera. but i love it. yes it is bizarrely evil but man, the antagonist was beautiful and very very wicked. i even remembered her characters name, she was literally named Petty!!! like one day, if i got the chance to play in a private pool with my friends, im going to recreate her pool drowning scene. it was fantastic. Petty did nothing wrong and was a girlboss when she tried to kill her sister!
