The Shepherds of Haven Soundtrack (Volume 1) is Now Out!

Over the last several months, I've been working with the brilliant composer, Ivan Duch, to develop an official soundtrack for Shepherds of Haven! Volume 1 of that soundtrack is out today!

This volume contains 16 songs, including theme songs for specific characters like Shery, Riel, Chase, Red, and Trouble; motifs and signature music for the game and numerous locations throughout its alpha build; and so much more! 

Working with Ivan to create this album has been such a blast. I'm pretty new to working with a composer and commissioning custom music based on locations and characters that exist only in text (and my imagination), but Ivan is a bonafide genius and master of his craft. Seriously, if you have any desire to commission an orchestral or instrumental piece based on your own stories or characters, I can safely say you should run, not walk, to work with him! I have nothing but resounding praise for his work and how easy and fun this collaboration has been. :) Work on Volume 2 has already been started as well!

currently watching: Just finished watching Predator (1987) for the first time in years... it came up in discussion with some friends a couple days ago, and I’d forgotten how nuts the movie is amongst all the memes. Besides that, I’m in the middle of Season 2 of The Golden Girls (whiplash 😂) and a rewatch of Outlaw Star

Week 1: Many Worlds

Day 1: College/Fashion and Rock.

Just some fanart for the Shepherds of Haven Universe, namely the illustrious Commander Blade Bronwyn.

Not necessarily fashion, rock, or college related per se, but the theme did remind me of the movie “Drive”; A lot of the cinematography in that movie had so much symbolism, and the Driver’s jacket *salsa dance whooo sound here*. Soundtrack was very choice; gave an such a Steve McQueen heist vibe set in the 80’s.

Please Do Not Percieve him!!!! Lev is so extremely concerned with being The Correct Kind of Person who's strong and competent and can take care of themselves and doesn't need help. Wow, what a journey it's been! The complete soundtrack for Shepherds of Haven, spanning across 32 original songs and two full-length albums, is now officially finished! You can listen to this latest album over on composer Ivan Duch's website!

This volume also contains 16 songs, including theme songs for the remaining Shepherds and other major characters, such as Tallys, Ayla, Halek, Briony, Lavinet, Mimir, Croelle, Prihine, and Caine; motifs and signature music for the game's numerous locations like Heth Macoll, Capra, and the Elven Quarter; and so much more! But beware: if you haven't played the alpha build, there's probably a spoiler or two lurking in there. 😉

As always, watching Ivan's creative process as he's turned the game's textual descriptions and fictional narratives into sonic adventures has been an incredible experience. If you ever feel a desire to commission a cinema-quality piece of music for your own stories or characters (including your own Brightburner), he's open for commissions and is amazing to work with!

Hi! Just wanted to ask, is Blade's theme anywhere in volume 1 or 2? Or will there be a volume 3?

Hi, this was answered here! In short, Blade's Theme and a few other songs were composed a few years back by a different composer, Irene Chan, so those songs wouldn't be included in Ivan's albums or website. They will be featured in the game as well as included in my "complete" version of the OST when the game is complete and out for purchase, though! In the meantime, you can listen to them over on Patreon!

How could you leave out blade's theme 😭😭 BUT OMG THE MUSIC IS INCREDIBLE

Blade's theme wasn't composed by Ivan Duch (but by Irene Chan), so it wasn't included in Ivan's release, but it will be included in both the final version of the game and my version of its OST, which will feature the other songs done by other artists as well! 🙂 And yay, I'm so glad you're enjoying the music, it really is all phenomenal!!! 💖

Happy New Year, everyone! I thought it would be fun to do a little retrospective on the game's progress over the last year... Shepherds of Haven has grown so much from the little demo I posted in January 2018, and it continues to steadily build and flourish in so many different and exciting ways! Here's a look at just some of the things we accomplished in 2023!

I added 143,151 words to the game (2.5 main chapters, 8 new character interludes) in 2023: the equivalent of writing the longest Lord of the Rings book in one year! We also broke our huge 1 million word milestone—without including code—meaning Shepherds of Haven is now officially twice as long as War and Peace, and almost as long as the entire 7-book Harry Potter series... and all in a single game!

A lot goes into game creation behind the scenes, including the coordination and creation of visual assets for the game—like character cards, codex entries, maps, portraits, and backgrounds—fun stuff for the fans (like the MC info template we created), and songs for the official soundtrack. As the game creeps slowly and determinedly towards its initial completion, that also means learning new things as a solo developer to prepare for the future, like learning to build an official website, researching business and tax practices, and beginning to think about how to conduct testing, publishing, and marketing down the road. Much of what I enumerate here hasn't been made public yet and will continue to cook in the background for a while, but I'm very proud of the work I've gotten done this year and will be excited to unveil more in the future!

And of course, for even more Shepherds of Haven content, I've added and completed even more stories for our little library on Patreon (which also has sizable word count at this point): The Bridge of Bones (a Trouble and Riel murder mystery), O Happy Dagger (a dark adventure featuring Briony, Chase, and Red), and The Hunt (a wild tale involving Tallys, Halek, Shery, and new kinds of spirits, fey magic, and Elves) were all serial stories completed in 2023, while Some Kind of Virus is a cyberpunk zombie apocalypse AU that will continue to be updated with new chapters monthly.

I hope you enjoyed this session of Shepherds of Haven Wrapped! Honestly, this doesn't actually cover everything I've been working on, but some things can't be packaged and listed out neatly, or otherwise won't seem very interesting to anyone else but me! 😂 As we inch through Chapter 9 and get more interludes done (only a few more main chapters to go), I'm hopeful that I'll also be able to find time to work on my next novel, but we'll see if the Shepherds schedule ends up ramping up or settling down as we work steadily towards finishing the main story!

One important thing before wrapping up is to acknowledge your guys' role in this wonderful, wild journey. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your invaluable contributions to the development of Shepherds of Haven. Do you have any particular music you like to listen to while write shoh? Or recommendations for music to listen during playing the game? I like to play the game and listen to winter’s end ost because it was on the tumblr website!

Hi there, aw I love that you listen to the OST on the Tumblr! ❤❤❤ I’m the sort of person who puts on shows in the background rather than music when I write, so I don’t tend to listen to music to get in any sort of creative mood! I’d love to put together any music that makes me think of ShoH if I come across it, though, so I’ll reblog if I find any! (Do check out the music on the FAQ page, lol, it’s the Velvet Room music from Persona but I do really like that!) XD

OH! Actually, I do think the grittiness/weird jazziness of certain Persona 5 songs, the stateliness and somberness of certain Final Fantasy songs (VII and XV are the ones that come to mind for me), and the sweeping atmosphere of certain Studio Ghibli songs do sometimes do the trick for me!

Shepherds of Haven

Shepherds of Haven is a dark fantasy interactive fiction game. In it, you play as a Mage living in a world where magic is outlawed and your people—those possessing supernatural powers—are oppressed and reviled. The world is ruled by humans who believe in science, technology, and industry: at best, you and your kind are nothing more than a fairytale, and at worst you are the state’s greatest threat. 

Thus, using magic has been illegal for centuries. But after years of persecution, you are suddenly offered an opportunity to use your powers for good: demons are now returning, and the world needs fighters like you to protect the population from their invasion. Guns and bullets do no good against monsters pulled from primeval nightmares; only your people and your supernatural powers have the ability to fight fire with fire. 

So you join the Shepherds: an order of elite heroes and fighters comprised of the very people the world once feared more than the demons themselves. As a Shepherd, you’ll solve magical crimes, slay demons to protect the citizens of Haven, and build your reputation throughout the capital.
