Manson’s Law of Avoidance
Manson’s Law of Avoidance: “The more something threatens your identity, the more you will avoid it.”
You will avoid negative things that threaten your identity like failure, loss, and rejection. But you will also avoid positive things that threaten your identity—even things like success, love, and happiness.
The healthiest identity is a flexible identity. The best answer to the question, “Who am I?” is always “I don’t know; let’s find out.” ONE THING FOR YOU TO TRY THIS WEEK Experiment with being wrong about yourself for a week. Maybe you actually do like to cook, even though you think you don’t. Maybe you aren’t such a good friend, even though you think you are. Maybe you actually would be good at learning a language, if you really tried.
We tend to be most rigid in our identities in areas that we’ve been hurt the most. People who grow up in poverty tend to have the most inflexible views on money and wealth. People who grow up unattractive tend to have the most rigid views about appearance. These rigid views about ourselves and the world helped us survive at one point, but when held onto for too long, they eventually hold us back.

Preparing for tomorrow's ritual, I wanted to share this week's Patreon post/resource as a way for you to get in the mindset of the event. https://www.patreon.com/posts/80498039 About 15 years ago I did a writing for myself called "I AM." Part of separating out our sacred self from the mix of perceptions from others is examining who it is that we are... and this was mine. I then, in looking at it yesterday, deleted pieces no longer true, added in notes that are, and sat with it. Who are the sides of you? How many are your layers are you, core, whole unto yourself? I hope you enjoy my reflections on the matter, and I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow. Access to the ritual is available to members of my Patreon at any level! https://www.patreon.com/posts/80498039 #SelfIdentity #IAm #SelfLove #SacredSelf #SacredIdentity #SpiritualWorking #LeeHarrington #PassionAndSoul #GroupRitual https://www.instagram.com/p/CqMkZ0COBip/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Way In Which I Sold My Soul to College - Part One: Identity
Tumblr media
As I continue the hunt for NYC roommates/gal pals, one of the girls I reached out to on IG was hella smart and created a Google Form for all potential roomies to fill out so that it'd be easier for us all to get to know each other.
What's funny though - and very sad too - was that as I was filling out the form, I realized that I kinda sacrificed my identity for college success.
What are some of my favorite shows/movies: I can't remember the last time I binged a show for fun and not for a class project - what's on tv besides Euphoria? I forget if I prefer action movies or romcoms - is Marvel still producing stuff?
What are some of my hobbies/passions: writing - but most of it is for school, photography - but again most of it is for school, umm.. I used to like baking, I haven't done that in a while though. I had a passion for sewing once. What other hobbies are there? How can I try them and pick one to focus on?
A fun fact about myself: can I just reiterate what I usually say on my first day of class or does that not work without the context of being college students?
I seriously sat there at the table in shock for a few moments - college has consumed so much of my life I don't remember half the person I am outside of it now. What am I into? What do I enjoy? Who do I want to be presented as/what kind of character am I in this film of a life?
What's out there to explore and try besides new hard seltzers and TikTok trends? What do I want to spend a Saturday doing besides working or bullshitting an essay? How do I spend a Sunday afternoon besides recovering from a hangover?
It feels like I've become such a shell of a person for the sake of this college degree. I just had a conversation about my favorite color with one of my friends in photography class - we both love the periwinkle color-range. But I seriously can't remember the last time I shared that little bit of personal interest with someone; when I started college, my favorite color was purple - just like it was in preschool. But then it became blue/periwinkle - really it's been blue/periwinkle for years now but that was my sister's color for a while so I couldn't entertain it, and nobody seemed to care about that little fact either. I felt liberty in deciding that my official favorite color is now periwinkle/blue, but I didn't have a context to share that information - what did that have to do with being an ideal candidate for social media management or proving how I'm capable of succeeding in law school?
What is my life besides how I act at a party and what I want in a career or how I feel about abortion rights and trans people? Filling out that Google form, I realized that over the past 2/3 years, I haven't given much thought to myself - my likes and dislikes, my hobbies and passions; professors and classmates wanted to hear about that during orientation but now it's not important, not for full-time adult stuff I guess.
I hope that during my interim year before law school, I can better describe myself. I want a better grasp of who I am and what I enjoy; I want to remember funny stories and have a favorite food and a favorite actor and a favorite muscian/artist and a list of things I enjoy doing that can occupy my Saturday and a new movie or new album to look forward to. I want to fill out a Google Form and feel like I know myself and can represent myself well to attract the crowd I prefer and thrive with - and not fear an oncoming identity crisis.

Week 9 Fandom
My experience with Fandom
Some may not know my background, but I grew up in Sweden, where Asia and Asian culture was not so prevalent. Due to my mixed heritage of being both European and Asian, I traveled back and forth to Thailand and Malaysia, where my relatives live. Starting from 10 years old, I was exposed to Asian pop culture. I started gaining interest in the famous worldwide genre of K-pop as it is now, but back then, it had a limited amount of popularity. When I returned to Sweden, I emerged with K-pop songs and gained some form of obsession. Yeah, I have once been a so-called "Koreaboo" I wanted to dress like them, speak the korean language, and eat their local food. It became a tiny part of my identity, but I never intended to hurt anyone. I had never had this sense of belonging that I was Asian too. Still, once I found out more about Asian culture, I began to realize that I was brought up in an Asian household, too, and not so much Swedish after all. That’s when I started to realize and acknowledge my own heritage progressively (my malaysian/thai side).
Tumblr media
My classmates ridiculed me for liking K-pop because it was very strange to them. I then participated and started my dance journey through K-pop dances; it's remained on YouTube, but that's a secret unless you are a hacker to the max. You are welcome to watch it if you find it. I participated in the K-pop dance contest made by the idols themselves. Best believe I won 1st place in the Girl's generation – the boys' dance contest, I was 13 years old at that time, and that was one of my early successes. However, I cannot deny that I am still somewhat proud of myself for winning.

Interestingly, something can touch you so much to the core that you go all in for it.
How did my Fandom make me interact and engage in communities?
Well, K-pop made me into blogging. My first Tumblr in 2013 contained content from my favorite girl group, f(x), a 5-member group with exciting concepts. This is where I kickstarted my digital design phase, which made me into editing photos and creates GIFS of my biases. Tumblr's engaging and awarding part was the liking, reblogging, and following aspects. I had active followers who reblogged my edits, making me feel excited and happy.

( Pretty Sulli, May you Rest in Peace)
As previously mentioned, I had my dancing journey through K-pop. There was a little community of K-pop dancers in Sweden that held dance party events where we could perform. It's similar to Swinburne's MICS, but this is outside school. It was located in an arena, and other fun activities were also present. K-pop brought many different communities because of shared interests and taught me a lot about diversity, self-progression, and fun. I might not have been this creative, passionate person if I didn't experience all this beforehand.
Today, I’m not partaking in anything strictly fan-based but I enjoy things with balance.
The references for this post were solely based on my own experience, so I didn't provide any sources.

Are you aware there are five factors of your life that make you unique? It is those factors that actually identify who you are in this universe. If you use your gender, ethnicity, weight, sexuality, zodiac sign, or anything else for your identity you will surely fail. Low self-esteem is the harvest of misidentifying you. In 4 Keys of Success, we will discuss, how to identify who you are, how to find the original you, why it is important to have the mentality of a crab, and why the question, “what do you want to be when you grow up,” is not a wise question. I hope you are ready for this life changing journey.
