The Problem with “Velma”
My issue with *Velma* is how they’ve managed to take a group of likeable mystery-solvers and a hilarious talking dog and turn them into despicable caricatures of themselves and replaced the dog with overly sexual jokes as their attempt of humor (which is even worse when you consider so many of the sexual jokes and nudity happen with minors, teens, AKA children!). It’s one thing to reimagine their race... but this reimagination lacks real connection to their main characteristics that make them Velma, Shaggy, Fred, and Daphne.
1. Velma isn’t an underdog; Velma is a cynical bitch.
2. Fred isn’t a himbo leader; he’s a stupid privileged white boy who seems to have a toxic masculinity enough to make it difficult for him to redeem himself during the series
3. Daphne isn’t an accidental support; she’s a mean popular girl who ditched her childhood friend and started treating her like crap.
4. Shaggy is no longer a cowardly foodie with the munchies; he’s a romantic interest for the dislikable protagonist and the opposite of everything he used to implicitly be.
5. Scooby is nowhere to be seen.

This is a real quote (at least I’m assuming it is) from the upcoming Scooby-Doo series, “Velma”..
I.. I have no words.. 😳
The way the text works so hard to emphasize “slut” and “die” I can just hear them screaming “LOOK AT US! BAD WORDS AND DEATH! ISN’T THAT CRAZY? WE’RE A COOOOL SCOOBY SERIES, RIGHT?” 😵
To be clear, I’m not necessarily against the idea of a Scooby-Doo series being more mature if it’s done properly. I think that the live action movies and crossover event “Scoobynatural” proved well that the series can handle more mature subjects and jokes while still staying fairly faithful to the source material.
This series though, it’s just taking beloved characters and changing them, making them rude and vulgar because that makes it an “adult” show. They’re going for shock value, making the gang do and say things you wouldn’t expect since they’re usually part of a family show, and that’s the main gag. It just doesn’t look like this show is gonna have much substance in its writing, which is sad because there’s SO much potential in the idea of more mature Scooby-Doo stories other than obvious and overly vulgar jokes.
I’m still going to give it a fair shot and watch at least the first episode, mainly out of pure curiosity for how a full episode will flow and if maybe it somehow manages to grab me any better than the advertising has so far. We’ll see how it goes, but so far I think most of the fans agree that this series was a huge mistake, and unfortunately I’m inclined to agree as well 🤦‍♂️

Just saw the Super Mario Bros Movie and it was WAY better than I expected! I had a really fun time watching it with my family and discussing some of the references.
There are some small gripes I have with the plot structure, but it didn’t really bother me as much everything else was serviceable to straight up charming. I couldn’t help but enjoy it all the way through!
0/10 There was no Waluigi nor a reference to Coconut Mall, the best course ever made.

Buddy Rich: "Funk City Ola" from Class Of '78 (1978)
You might not catch it right away, but Rich's horns were the bedrock for Big Daddy Kane's legendary collaboration rap "Show And Prove" featuring Big Scoob, Sauce Money, Shyheim, Jay-Z, and Ol' Dirty Bastard ('94). Good news: no clams to be found on any end.

Infinity Train - one of the first series Warner Brothers erased for tax write-offs, despite receiving critical acclaim
Scoob: Holiday Haunt - shut down for tax write-offs, even though it featured stars like Andre Braugher, Ming-Na Wen, and Mark Hamill and was said to be "practically finished"
Coyote vs Acme - looking to be shut down and getting a tax write-off, despite being a James Gunn movie (like him or hate him, his name is big in Hollywood) with amazing reviews from test audiences
Now, it's Rooster Teeth - shut down after over 20 years, with many like Casey Lee Williams (the woman in charge of the RWBY soundtrack) finding out the news via Twitter
I think it's safe to say that David Zaslav doesn't appreciate the art of animation.

On today's episode of Holy Shit Can Warner Brothers Get Any Worse?
Yes. Yes it can.
Tumblr media
3 confirmed, and possibly more than 18 games total are being removed.
Even worse, they're refusing to transfer ownership back to the creators, with WB citing the refusal “stems from logistical and resource constraints." Despite the fact that as one creator pointed out, doing so (on steam) would take literally 3 clicks.
Some of these games are a decade plus old. That's a decade of "wishlists, reviews, community guides, and forum discussions" about to be erased.
Even worse still. While the creators have been told they can republish their games afterwords they've been instructed to remove all mention of Adult swim games.
"Molinari said. “I asked for clarification, and he even wants the credits sequence altered to remove the names of the [Adult Swim Games] team. I’m a huge supporter of games preservation, and this is a direct blow to properly crediting the people that worked on a game.”"
Batgirl, Scoob Holiday Haunt, Coyote V.S. Acme. All completed, along with many others still in production that will now never see the light of day. Now with this, it's a troubling pattern. One that I'm afraid we won't see an end to without outside interference.
This is greed. Pure and simple. David Zaslav is not afraid to destroy art. Art that hundreds of dedicated, passionate people worked on, just to eke out a few more pennies...

My Thoughts on HBO Max’s “Velma”
Tumblr media
Welp, I watched the first episode of “Velma” aaand yep, it was about exactly what I expected if not somehow a bit worse 🤦‍♂️ I wasn’t sure that I’d want to write out a review for it, but I’m mad and immediately fueled to talk about it, so let’s go.
⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EPISODE 1 ⚠️
Literally the first scene of the whole show is Daphne and other students in a gym shower, very exposed, making a rough attempt at meta commentary, and all after the image of two cockroaches having sex..  😳 And that’s just one example of MANY jokes/visuals of this nature. Seriously why is this show SO horny?? IT TAKES PLACE IN HIGH SCHOOL! THEY’RE MINORS!! (Velma specifically, according to the “Velma” Twitter, is canonically 15) If you wanted these types of jokes and imagery so bad the LEAST you can do is put them in college so it’s not so majorly uncomfortable.
The writing was rough, some scenes felt like they were speeding by unnaturally, highly specific references to various media were all over the place and never in a funny way, almost every character is completely unlikable (ESPECIALLY the main Mystery Inc. cast) meaning there’s nobody to root for, and the show is truly just being vulgar for the sake of being vulgar. It’s honestly amazing how unfunny it is at times, it just prioritizes half-baked attempts at basic jokes, profanity, and overused cliches rather than a well put together story with interesting characters. To be a bit brutal, there were truly some moments that this script felt more like a student’s first attempt rather than a greenlit HBO Max series.
The only points I can really give this show is in animation/design, it all moves pretty well (with some occasional choppiness, though that might’ve just been buffering/my connection) and the style is alright for the most part. There definitely are some odd choices in the mix, one of them being the chosen look for Norville (who I WISH I could call Shaggy, but this is more accurate). His look just doesn’t fit the Shaggy vibe enough, I’ve seen so many redesigns that look leagues better. Though I suppose you could argue that since he (and the rest of the gang) is barely written or acted as the original source character correctly, why bother having a design that fits that? 😤
Last point I want to bring up, I’m not at all enticed by the serial killer plot or who killed Brenda. If it wasn’t enough to change how characters act and how vulgar the series is, now we don’t even get monsters to unmask? It is only episode one, and masked monsters were referenced in background details and at least once in the trailer, but the fact that the main plot of Scooby-Doo as a franchise barely exists in the first episode of this series just made the whole thing drag and feel boring to watch. I’m not saying the franchise can’t branch out here and there by doing things other than the classic formula, but also we know this show is built on mystery solving and will include at least one if not several masked monsters, so to not have any in episode one just makes the show as a whole hard to anticipate. Like is it a simple serial killer mystery? Is it normal Scooby-Doo monster hijinks? What am I watching?
Of course these are all just my opinions, if you’re curious you can watch for yourself and maybe you’ll like it more than I did. All I know for myself is that the only reason I’m even considering watching any more is pure morbid curiosity over how much worse it can get, and even then at least in this moment I don’t know if I can get myself to sit through episode two.

Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase
forcefully review as watched by Deluge
spoilers, obviously, but then again, I'm the one watching it for the first time.
Wait, I've seen this guy before, blue electric man thing
Damn, It's always US Unis that look so lively. It's rarely this lively here in Aus. Then again, probably just media portraying it as lively.
There's always a Dog? Where? Joke...
Yoooo Its the name of the movie!
Well yeah, You usually use a magnet to brick a hard drive, I think.
They really are being tempted by scooby snaxs.
Self aware joke on how they split up
The power of cartoons is truly extraordinary, being able to lure and shock a virus
They got to the Scooby Dooby Do song~
I was expecting a Corri-Doors bit...
I wonder who sent them in....
Play ball? Baseball? The other student.
Level one clear!
There's another square at the base of the coliseum, really suspecting baseball boy
They pulled out the quick change, let's go
Dinosauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuur!
It's probably the baseball dude
Wooly mammoths!
Damn, Pterodactyl baby is bigger than i expected
The Doppelgangers, Cyber Doppelgangers. and in classic outfits. and reverse palate swap for Scoob and Shaggy, Which I heard are from a different era of TV Scooby.
Yeah I really think its the baseball guy
OOO, classic monsters
Dear god, Blake, flirting with Blake
Lol, playing in the amusement park to dunk on the old villains, literally
Man had the damn magnet the entire time
Yep, figured as much. Baseball guy.
Hmmm.... After credits interview
kinda like the bloopers at the end of old pixar movies
Overall, Interesting premise, but I feel its a little drawn out, considering the clues pretty clearly pointed us in the right direction on whodunit. Not as much musical inserts. Props for old references that I vaguely get.
7/10

Fuck it. I’m live-blogging my thoughts on the first two episodes of Velma.
Why? Because I love Scooby-Doo.
It’s THAT franchise to me. You know the one. A franchise that I grew up with and loved as a child. Granted, I don’t watch it as religiously as I did before, but I still check in and watch something new if it caught my interests.
But that doesn’t mean that I think EVERYTHING Scooby-Doo related is instantly amazing. I’m not a cultist. If something’s bad, I’m gonna call it bad.
I didn’t like Scoob, I partially didn’t like Be Cool, Scooby-Doo, and I REALLY didn’t like that fan-made pilot Mystery Incorporated, despite the passion that went into it.
So trust me when I say I’m not pulling punches when it comes to Velma. If it does something I don’t like, I’m gonna complain, both as a Scooby-Doo fan and as a reviewer.
So, let’s embrace this journey together, shall we?

Scooby-Doo and Krypto, Too! (2023)
Film review #553
Director: Cecilia Aranovich Hamilton
SYNOPSIS: Mystery inc. are called by Jimmy Olsen to Metropolis, in order to investigate the disappearance of the Justice League: Superman, Batman, and the rest. They arrive to a Metropolis overrun by villains, and Lex Luthor plotting to buy the Justice League headquarters and demolish it. The gang team up with Krypto the super dog, as they attempt to find out what happened to the Justice League...
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: Scooby-Doo and Krypto Too! is a 2023 animated film and part of a long line of direct-to-video titles in the Scooby-Doo franchise. This time, Scooby and the gang are travelling to Metropolis, where Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen has sent for Mystery inc. (via Daphne, who he thinks is his girlfriend because they were voted “best red-haired couple” when they were kids at summer-camp), in order to investigate the disappearance of the Justice League. When they get there they are immediately set upon by villains such as Giganta, The Joker, Solomon Grundy, and the like: who are all running amok since Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest aren’t around. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is trying to get the mayor to sell him the now abandoned Justice League Headquarters so he can demolish it. The plot is set up as a typical Scooby-Doo mystery featuring all the usual essentials such as Scooby and Shaggy stuffing their faces, a list of suspects, a trap, and searching for clues. Though it must be said that it being a typical plot is not a bad thing: Scooby-Doo is a rare example of a franchise that has been successful for over fifty years without making significant changes. The only time the franchise falters is when it attempts to re-boot or re-imagine it (See: Scoob!). As such, even though it’s predictable, it’s still fun. This isn’t the first time Mystery inc. has had a crossover with superheroes though, as they have met Batman more than once, even hinting at it in the story, which is a nice touch. What strikes me is just how action-packed the film is: there’s rarely a lull in the energy of the film, and as soon as it starts, we are treated to Mystery inc. being chased around the city by the various villains from the DC universe, and it’s a pretty cool showcase of all the different characters that provides a bit of a twist on the classic Scooby-Doo chase. In fact, the whole film is full of references to the DC universe: probably far more than I noticed, but because of the relentless pace of the movie, you’ll have to be quick to catch some of them.
The Mystery inc. gang are on very typical form here, with everyone being the characters you are familiar with. No lengthy character establishments needed here. The supporting cast that provide the suspects for the mystery fill out their roles well, and Lex Luthor joins the gang to provide some comedy relief for the most part, and his part fits in really well, and adds something novel and fun, alongside his dog, “Rex Luthor.” Krypto shows up about half-way through the film, and even though he can’t speak like Scooby, still manages to capture a Superman-style personality with his actions, and is a solid support character too. I think more could have been done to explore the dynamic between Scooby and Krypto, but I don’t think the movie really needed it: it’s just a bit of fun that doesn’t need an in-depth character study or complex relation building.
As mentioned, the pace of the film is quite relentless, and there’s plenty of high energy action scenes alongside the typical Scooby-Doo shenanigans. A criticism of some of these scenes, such as the opening chase with the super villains, and the finale with everyone chasing the Phantom Zone projector around, is that they perhaps last a bit too long without much variation to keep them interesting. The film does try, but they perhaps could have been cut down just a little bit to avoid viewers noticing that they have been going on for a while. But that’s just a minor criticism, and on the whole, Scooby-Doo and Krypto, Too! is a fun adventure that is full of life, character and references which turn a silly crossover into a solid Scooby-Doo adventure. The central mystery is a bit weak in places, and as mentioned some of the action scenes go on for just a bit too long, but overall it gets in all the classic Scooby-Doo tropes (plenty of “Zoinks” and “Jinkies”), while also giving room for something new, such as Lex Luthor’s comedic role providing some much welcome and unexpected humour. Obviously intended for younger audiences, but there’s enough fun for older viewers as well. Unfortunately, the film’s released was cancelled due to Warner bros. company restructuring; fortunately, the entire film was leaked online, probably by someone disgruntled with the decision, so go find it if you want some good old-fashioned Scooby-Doo fun with a superhero twist.

Scooby Doo and Krypto too! review
I saw the unreleased Lost” Scooby Doo animated movie, Scooby Doo and Krypto too!   A little background on why this movie is considered “Lost” is when Warner Brothers was merged into Discovery a lot of finished and nearly finished films and TV shows were scrapped for tax write-off purposes.   This was pretty much unheard of until now because nearly finished seasons of TV shows and entirely finished movies were “deleted.”
Most of the victims of this tax write-off purge happened in Warner Brothers animation department. Because they were releasing the more adult themed Velma cartoon (which is infamously bad) they scrapped pretty much every kid-friendly Scooby Doo project in development (or even completed). The list of scrapped or canceled projects included:
Batgirl (Nearly finished live-action movie). Apparently someone tried to smuggle a copy out of Warner Brothers studios but was caught.  Scoob! 2 AKA Scoob! Holiday Haunt (completed CG animated movie) Scooby Doo and the Haunted High or Scooby Doo and the Haunted High school (Which was apparently filmed and was going to feature three new songs by The Hex Girls.  I love the Hex Girls.  I wish this one would get leaked just for the music). Scooby Doo and Krypto too! (A Scooby Doo and The Justice League crossover). So far this is the only scrapped film to have leaked online.  The Nevers season 1 part 2 (completed).  This one was scrapped but in an odd turn of events Tubi (the free streaming service) was allowed to show the unreleased episodes for three days back in February.        Doom Patrol season 5 (In development) This was canceled. Animaniacs season 4 (In development) Canceled.  Batman: The caped Crusader (animated series).  Originally this was planned to be a direct continuation of the now-classic 90s Batman The Animated series but when Kevin Conroy (the original voice of Batman) passed away, the plan was changed. Then the show was canceled all together but in an interesting turn of events Amazon Prime has bought up the distribution rights and will release the first season. There is no word on who will voice Batman and it will be by J. J. Abrams and Bruce Timm (co-creator of the 90s Batman animated series). Hellblazer.  This was to be a new reimagining of the character John Constantine for HBO Max by J. J. Abrams.  J. J. Abrams had even been given exclusive use of the John Constantine character in media while he was working on this show.  That was part of why John Constantine was written out of Legends of Tomorrow and one of the factors that may have contributed to why the contemporary Constantine in The Sandman Netflix series is a new version of Joanna Constantine (but with John’s backstory) instead.  This was scrapped. Constantine 2. ????  It’s not entirely clear what is going on with this one.  Back in 2005 Keanu Reeves played an American version of the British sorcerer character, John Constantine. After J. J. Abrams version of Hellblazer was at least temporarily scrapped it was believed the 2005 movie version of the character would get a sequel. Then the rumors started to circulate that even this was canceled.  It’s unclear what will happen now with the character. Keanu Reeves seems to believe the sequel movie will still happen. All DC Superhero films with Henry Cavill as Superman.  There are lots of rumors about this one so let me established right now that what I am saying right here is rumor and not solid fact. The rumor is part of why Henry Cavill left the TV show The Witcher (which is extremely popular over on Netflix) and why he will not be in the fourth season of the show, is because he was promised he would continue being Superman in Warner Brothers DC superhero movies.  But after the merger with Discovery all plans for future Superman films featuring Henry Cavill as Superman were scrapped. James Gunn (who was just appointed at Warner to oversee DC related projects) has gone on record saying this was NOT his idea, that the decision to stop doing Henry Cavill Superman movies was made before he got there.             The Dead Boy Detectives TV series (filmed).  Technically a spin-off of Doom Patrol (since that was their first TV appearance) AND Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman (since The Sandman comics is where they came from but of a storyline not yet covered by The Sandman Netflix series) The Dead Boy Detectives was dropped by HBO Max but Netflix has bought the distribution for at least season 1 of the series. Scooby Doo and the Mystery Pups.  This was to be a kid-friendly animated series for preschoolers but I guess someone got cold feet since they were doing an adult-orientated Scooby Doo themed show (Velma).   The irony is all the kid-friendly Scooby Doo projects sound great. It’s the adult themed one that they greenlit that probably should have been scrapped.   The Sandman.  The Sandman season 1 was a success over on Netflix and according to rumor (this one is only rumor) someone at Warner tried to cancel season 2 but the contracts had already been signed and they could not stop the show from continuing. There are more but those are all the ones I can think of from the top of my head.
Most of these shows and films were supposed to come out this year or even next year.    On the same day that the preschool friendly series “Scooby Doo and the Mystery Pups” was canceled, “Scooby Doo and Krypto too!” was leaked to torrent file sharing sights and dubious cartoon streaming sites as well as several Youtube channels. The Youtube versions were hastily removed by Warner Brothers but other copies of the film continued to circulate.
The quality of the film is perfect. It looks like a completed film.  And I am about to review it for you.      The animation style is deliberately very early 1970s.  The Joker looks exactly the way he did in the old Super Friends cartoon and there are some great homages to old and semi-obscure DC properties that old school fans would love. The voce of “The Kitchen” AI in the Hall of Justice is the voice of the narrator from Super Friends.
The plot is cute and very kid friendly.  Mysterious fiery “phantoms” keep appearing after the disappearance of the Justice League of America.  Jimmy Olsen (who is convinced that Daphne is his girlfriend because they went to camp together when they were nine) calls on the Scooby Gang for help.
Frank Welker is back as Fred.  After watching clips of Velma it felt good to see the classic version of Scooby Doo and the original voice of Fred still playing the part.  Tara Strong provides three voices.  All the characters are true to themselves though you may question Lex Luthor’s portrayal until near the end.  He’s gone back to his 80s self of being very Trump-esque.  I’d say it was ham fisted but Lex Luthor got to be president of the USA (in DC comics) before Trump so the behavior comparisons are hard to resist.      I’m glad Fred isn’t portrayed as vapid, van-obsessed, and selfish like he was in a few of the recent animated films. And Velma wasn’t obnoxiously skeptical either, like she was in Curse of the 13th Ghost.  Everyone pretty much feels like themselves and all the protagonists are likable.   There’s a lot of humor and DC Easter Eggs. The plot is definitely for kids even though it’s also retro and clearly meant to appeal to anyone who watched the “Scooby Doo movies” of the 1970s.  One of the best gags in it is when Velma takes off her glasses in front of Lois Lane and suddenly Lois can’t recognize her and gets confused until Velma puts her glasses back on. That was cute.  And the movie let Velma figure out Superman’s secret identity.   The music is very retro and feels like classic Scooby Doo. The best song is the opening song called “Where Only Heroes Go” and it sounds like a song from the original 1969 Scooby Doo and it’s good. It’s really good and catchy and completely in the style it should be. It helps you immerse yourself into the willful Nostalgia of it all.
I highly recommend it for kids and grown ups. It’s cute and sweet. It genuinely feels like both classic Scooby Doo and a bit like Justice League: Action.   In fact I’d dare say this was more a crossover of Scooby Doo and Justice League: Action than anything else.  I hope this movie gets a legitimate release.  It’s one of the best new animated Scooby Doo things I’ve seen in a while.

Scoob is a contentious film. Whether you think it's good or bad or simply average is entirely up to you. However this isn't a full review of the movie itself but one of its characters: Brian. Despite his less than stellar performance I believe Brian is not as awful as he's made out to be.
For starters, he isn't a misogynist. We see him treat his pilot Dee Dee quite well. He doesn't make an offhand remark about her gender. He doesn't hit on Daphne or Velma, nor does he insult their intelligence. He trusts Deedee & it's implied the two knew each other before. Normally characters like him would put down the woman to secure his own ego but nothing like that ever happened.
Another thing is while he is conceited he genuinely means well. He accepts Shaggy and Scooby, well more Scooby on the team. There are some moments like when he was hiding in on the ferris wheel instead of facing Dastardly's robots. But in hindsight it just shows how inexperienced He is in the superhero field especially when this version of Dastardly is more threatening. Most of the time his interactions with the duo were friendly.
Also the moment with Captain Caveman was fucking hilarious!!
The only time Brian actually acts like a jerk was when he blamed Shaggy and argued with Fred. But that wasn't because he wanted to be an ass he was just frustrated that the dog he was supposed to be caring for got kidnapped. He felt like a failure so it's understandable he'd lash out. He did apologize in a way by giving them a brand new Mystery Machine showing no hard feelings.
The movie implies Brian has some sort of self worth issues because he's nervous about taking on his father's mantle. He wants to be this brave powerful hero but doesn't know how to get about it. So he uses what he knows like social media and theatrics. In fact I think those are also methods of him hiding his fears. As long as he can appear as confident as possible nobody would take him for a fool or weak. Running with that interpretation his character makes a lot more sense.
Even though his relationship with Dynomutt was somewhat tense he doesn't spend every moment putting him down. Though I do wish the movie focused on them, it just irks me how Dynomutt was giving 5000% but had to make Blue ineffectual in comparison. But that's the fault of the writing. Blue was more badass in the drafts. But as far as final product goes he isn't awful. The true downside is that he was voiced by Markie Mark (uhh) but even then it wasn't terrible voicework and he did a decent job capturing Brian's personality. Dis wish they hired an actual VA or Brendan Fraser.
At the end of a day he was a victim of shoddy writing and he deserved better than what he was given. He isn't a moron, just a misunderstood man doing his best!
