Hi. I wanted to drop by to say I just read your paper "Diamond frogs forever". What a cutie! Do you know if there has been any additional work on this species? The discussion on the inguinal markings was very interesting and I'd love to know more.
Thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about the frog I named after my wife!
Tumblr media
For the uninitiated, this is Rhombophryne ellae, Ella's Diamond Frog, which I dedicated to my then-fiancé in 2020, in celebration of her completing her PhD. Ella was with me in the field in northern Madagascar (in the midst of Cyclone Ava, which was less than optimal for her first field experience) when we discovered this little frog. I believe we evacuated the forest just two days after this discovery. You can read a little more about the story here.
There has indeed been a little additional work done on this species, namely by me, but I am still in the process of writing it up, together with colleagues. Since the publication, we have managed to track down additional specimens of R. ellae that already existed in museum collections, but had been misidentified as juveniles of the much larger R. laevipes. So, we will be substantially increasing knowledge of the variability of the species. We are also going to be describing the sister species to it, which looks very similar, and actually has basically the same inguinal eye spot markings. More on this when the paper is published, which I hope will be next year.

Steve: Well yeah, Eddie flirts with me constantly and touches me all the time and I do it back and everything, but we're just two guys horsin' around, y'know?
Everyone: No Steve. We do not know.
Steve: Yeah, Eddie's fruity with me, so what? Just because I'm a guy and he likes guys doesn't automatically mean he's into me. He's just comfortable being himself with me!
Everyone: Steve. He's sitting in your lap, playing with your hair. He calls you pretty boy, Steve. He's wearing your sweater, Steve. Steve, please.

I JUST. FINISHED A SCIENTIFIC CONUNDRUM and oh my god. I'm going to need at least three business days to recover from that last chapter. THAT WAS INSANELY GOOD i dont even know where to begin?? 😭 especially the "I Will Be There" from the Count of Monte Cristo part had me screaming ahahah and the part with Skipper? are you kidding mmeeeeeee😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 im going to go cry now. it was beautiful.
Thank you! I actually went back and forth a bit on that Monte Cristo part of it would be too cheesy, so I’m glad I did ultimately decide to go with it 😁
But oh wow you’re nearly all caught up since book 3 is just beginning.
(For others, links about this can be seen on my fan art/fic sideblog @gwens-projects )

All of your live blogs have been so entertaining to read haha
Honestly I've been taking mental notes whenever you talk about how story flows and themes etc etc, even more so with your recent reading through the book and how to utilize repetition and condense things
the thing about analyzing media is there’s a bunch of different layers you can engage in, like in terms of content/text and then in terms of the mechanics of rhetoric and language and structure, and it’s… really fun! breaking things down in terms of what works and why it works, for things you like and things you don’t like. actually if you’ve ever got the time or interest definitely look into mark forsyth’s elements of eloquence, it’s great and easy to read and really helps with getting into the mechanics of writing.

"My genetic material will not harm you…why do you find gloves a necessity?"
"It's procedure"

[ID: The meme of a person staring at the camera in annoyance with their hands on their hips. End ID.]
me when i am in an infinitely extending section of three-dimensional space facing an infinitely extending line that cuts the land into two equal halves, and my only option for getting across is to travel upwards into a fourth dimension and move across until i get to the other side of where the line would be separating the third-dimensional space and travel back down, therefore traveling across an insurmountable boundary without traveling in any of the known three dimensions, seeming to have simply disappeared into thin air, only to reappear in a different place without moving in a motion perceptible to the third dimension
tysm to @rjalker for providing the id!!
