POPPY
1923
Tumblr media
Poppy is a musical in three acts by Dorothy Donnelly with music by Stephen Jones and Arthur Samuels with musical contributions by John Egan. It was produced by Philip Goodman and staged by Donnelly and Julian Alfred, starring Madge Kennedy as Poppy McGargle and featuring W.C. Fields as her adopted father, Professor McGargle.
Tumblr media
The musical introduced songs such as "Two Make a Home", "On Our Honeymoon", "What Do You Do Sunday, Mary?" and "Alibi Baby".
The musical takes place in Greenmeadow, Connecticut in 1874. Professor Eustice McGargle, a juggler and hustler who runs a traveling circus, adopts an orphan, Poppy. He teaches her to be a con artist. When the circus passes through a small town, Poppy meets a wealthy local boy, William. McGargle learns that Princess Vronski Mameluke Pasha Tubbs has a long-lost daughter, and he tries to pass Poppy off as the heiress. In the end she turns out to be the true heir and marries William.
"What a gorgeous day! What effulgent sunshine! Effulgent sunshine, yes. 'Twas a day of this sort, the McGillicuddy brothers murdered their mother with an axe!" ~ W.C. FIELDS as PROFESSOR MCGARGLE
Tumblr media
One of W.C. Fields’s first paying jobs as an entertainer was in 1893 when he worked as a juggler at Fortescue’s Pier in Atlantic City. When business was slow, Fields would pretend to be drowning in the ocean and had to be fake rescued. His bosses believed that his near-drowning and dramatic rescue would draw a crowd of customers.
Tumblr media
Poppy opened in Atlantic City at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on August 13, 1923. The week of August 20th, Poppy played a split week in Long Branch and Asbury Park. Just prior to Broadway, it played a week in Newark NJ.
“Our idea of a way to waste what we consider the most charming farceur on the American stage is to cast Miss Madge Kennedy in musical comedy. "Poppy" by any other name at the Main Street would be Just as soporific, so far as Miss Kennedy is concerned.” ~ ASBURY PARK PRESS
Tumblr media
While performing in Poppy, Madge Kennedy was also seen on cinema screens in The Purple Highway. The film was based on a 1921 play, although Kennedy did not star in it on Broadway.
Tumblr media
Poppy opened on Broadway at the Apollo Theatre (223 West 42nd Street) on September 3, 1923.
About the Venue: Built in 1910 as the Bryant as 42nd Street's first motion picture and vaudeville house. In 1920, the Selwyn brothers rebuilt it as a legit house, the Apollo. From November 1934 to 1937, burlesque was produced, until the Brandt chain took over. By 1938, it was a popular art and foreign movie house. 1979 to 1983 marked a brief return to legit theatre as the ‘New’ Apollo. Later, it held rock concerts. Architectural elements from the building were incorporated into the Ford Center in 1998.
"’Poppy’ is clean and refreshing by comparison with much of the degenerate stuff which nowadays passes for legitimate amusement in our lighter musical shows.” ~ METCALFE, WALL STREET JOURNAL
Tumblr media
“Madge Kennedy Is the Babe Ruth of the stage, after a manner of speaking.” ~ JAMES W. DEAN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Thanksgiving week, Sunday NY Daily News columnist Sally Joy Brown ran a contest for young people to win tickets to see Poppy, including a backstage visit with Madge Kennedy.
Tumblr media
The event was so successful, Brown ran a second contest.
During the run of the play, Kennedy mentored drama students at Columbia University. They had voted her their favorite actress on Broadway.
Tumblr media
The controversy had caused David Belasco to re-write and re-stage several of his plays to address the NY Attorney General’s concerns.
Tumblr media
At the end of 1923, yet another Madge Kennedy film opened: Three Miles Out.
Tumblr media
On May 31st, Kennedy played her final performance as Poppy. The title role was assumed by chorus member Victoria White.
Tumblr media
With Kennedy’s departure, Fields was elevated to star status, billed above the title. Telegrams of congratulation to Mr. Fields were read from the stage of the Apollo theatre by Will Rogers, who abandoned his "Follies" rehearsals across the street to act as master of ceremonies. With characteristically witty comments, Mr. Rogers read congratulatory messages from Fred Stone, Eddie Cantor. Leon Erroll, Harold Lloyd, Al Jolson, Walter Catlett, Oscar Shaw, Raymond Hitchcock, Buster Keaton, Lee Shubert, Jerome Kern, and several others. Mr. Fields was greeted with a storm of applause when he stepped forward to acknowledge the felicitations.
Poppy ran 346 performances closing on June 28, 1924. The New York run was followed by a touring production.
In 1924 there was a London production of Poppy at the Gaiety Theatre.
Tumblr media
There were two film version, both of which starred Fields as Eustice P. McGargle. The first was Sally of the Sawdust (1925), a silent movie directed by D.W. Griffith and co-starring Carol Dempster as Sally. Griffith had good reason not to use the name or title "Poppy" for this movie. A movie titled Poppy with a character by that name had come out in 1917.
Tumblr media
Atlantic City audiences saw Sally on September 7, 1925 at the Strand Theatre on the Boardwalk.
Tumblr media
The second was Poppy (1936), directed by A. Edward Sutherland. Fields was ill during the 1936 production, and a fairly obvious double was used in several scenes requiring physical exertion.
Tumblr media
The film opened in Atlantic City at the Warner Theatre on the Boardwalk on June 21, 1936.  The Warner (later re-named the Warren) was just seven blocks away from Nixon’s Apollo, where the play began in 1923.
"And if we should ever separate, my little plum, I want to give you just one bit of fatherly advice: 'Never give a sucker an even break!'" ~ W.C. FIELDS as PROFESSOR MCGARGLE.

I might be thinking too far into this, but I can't stop thinking about the 3-14-hs audio where Howdy is selling Sally "instant mashed potatoes," which are soap flakes. We also know that she gets "bread," and he mutters "sponge" to himself. Her "cereal" is woodchips and sawdust. I heard someone mention that he could be some sort of con - but I don't think that's the case. I think this is a glimpse into Howdy's level of sentience at the very least.
These muppets don't need to eat. Howdy is fully aware of the difference between these "foods" and what they actually are. Do the other neighbors comprehend what they buy are essentially stage-props? Are they completely aware, or is this like a "We Happy Few" thing where they're seeing their world through a different lense? If they're not aware, why is Howdy so chill with it?? Thoughts??

so Sally has eaten soap flakes and sponges and sawdust/wood chips under the guise of them being instant mashed potato flakes and bread and cereal respectively. i don’t think any of the others have anything implying they’ve eaten Non Food Items. do you think this just Howdy messing w her specifically and also do you think she can just eat these non food items bc she’s a star and not a biological thing (they’re all puppets but you get it. in-universe)

Welcome Home Theory that's been running around in my brain. In the recent update, Food comes up quite a few times. Sally asking Poppy to bake her a cake, Sally buying some goods from Howdy, Frank helping Poppy to bake and the multiple times we see Frank in his garden, using chopped up vegetables as fertilizer.
One thing I noticed in particular, especially when it came to Sally, is that Sally doesn't particularly assign the concept of Eating with Flavor at all. Howdy sold Sally a box of Soap Flakes as Instant-Mashed Potatoes, a Sponge for Bread, and Wood Chips & Sawdust as Cereal. And when asking Poppy for a cake, she was more interested in the cake's aesthetically qualities more-so than how it actually tasted. Now this could just be seen Howdy fleecing Sally and Sally being quirky, but I couldn't help but feel that was...weird. Especially the idea of Howdy selling Sally a bunch of actual junk and calling it food. Sure, he seemed eccentric but he wouldn't sell anything to a friend that could actually hurt them just for a quick buck! Heck, he doesn't even take money! What reason would he have to fleece Sally, much less recklessly endanger her like that? Than there's Poppy and Frank with their...muffins? I mean, they're baked in Muffin Tins but they're just an amalgam of seeds and peanut putter from the sounds of things! And aside from the Peanut Butter it doesn't sound edible, it sounds more like a cartoonishly exaggerated idea of what a Giant Puppet Bird would eat from an aesthetic perspective, not so much a realistic one.
My guess is the Puppets don't have access to actual food. They probably couldn't even eat actual food! They're puppets! Everything they "Eat" are arts-and-craft amalgams or props of what would look like food for a show!
It would also put more focus on when Frank said "You eat with your eyes first." Whether he knew it or not, that's literal! It doesn't matter if it's actual food, just if it looks like it!
The only thing that could disprove this theory are the decomposing vegetables in his garden. Wheras every other bit of food we've seen could be written off as meant to look like food and not act like it, his torn up peppers and tomatoes look fairly realistic. That being said, they also don't look decomposed either. They look like they were freshly torn into and just plopped onto the ground. But at the same time, it's hard to say. Now, what does this imply? So what if the Puppets are eating fake food? Well, it's just a hunch, but I think this adds credence to the idea that the world the Puppets exist in is fake and manufactured, like the show they supposedly come from.
Another detail in the Bug Videos is that, as opposed to the Lost Media that was posted onto the website, the Bug Videos are far more candid and calm. They feel more like Slice of Life segments than they do cut up moments from the show!
I think this is meant to imply two things! 1. The Puppets in Welcome Home are real. And I mean that as in, they aren't just puppets. They have feelings, emotions, and they do things when the cameras aren't rolling. They have lives outside of the show they're a part of and broadcasted at towards children. 2. This world is fake, and was made by someone. More than likely the Playfellow Workshop. Whether or not this is a literal world the staff made, or simply that the Puppets see the sets they live in as a world and the Playfellow Workshop does a good job to prevent the puppets from being Truman Show'ed is another thing. Heck, maybe it isn't even the Playfellow Workshop! Maybe it's another third, unknown entity we have yet to encounter! Either way, I get the feeling this theme of the Puppets being in a Fake World, as well as the details of Wally pushing past the fourth wall of reality, imply that the story takes place in two realities: The real world, and the puppet world, and that the main conceit of the story and the horror come from how the two worlds blur together.

Spoilers for the Welcome Home ARG!
Specifically one of the bugs.
So it might just be because it was the last bug I found (it's located on the 4th page of the guestbook), but I think 3-14-hs is probably one of the more interesting videos on the site.
The video itself is a dialogue between Howdy & Sally (while Wally listens from his spot staring at a couple boxes of cereal) and I think it reveals a lot about Howdy's personality and how it differs from the basic description we're given on the site.
Throughout their conversation, Sally complains about how she can't eat chips because they weigh her down, but she doesn't seem thrilled about the boiled potatoes either. So, howdy suggest an alternative: instant mashed potatoes.
This would be completely reasonable... if he was actually selling her instant mashed potatoes.
which he wasn't.
he was selling her soap flakes.
Which are used as a laundry detergent.
Worse, this is clearly not the first time he's done this, as she also asks for "Bouncy Yellow Bread" (which he confirms as a sponge) and a new Cereal (which is actually Woodchips and sawdust)
I mean, it's clearly not hurting Sally since she's, you know, a puppet as well as a celestial being, and she wouldn't be requesting this stuff if she didn't like it, but I'm still wondering just why howdy is giving her fake foods instead of the real deal...
Is it just that he knows she can handle it?
Or is he starting to run out of food...?

Descendants OC time! (so far anyway lol)
(Keep in mind that their profiles aren't entirely finished; some of them I haven't fully developed yet, but this is them in general)
Tumblr media
Penelope (daughter of Pinocchio) Penelope always smells of wood and paint, and always has fresh sawdust on her apron from carving; she is very artsy and loves sketching and painting, as well as reading books. (Her grandfather Geppetto taught her how to carve when she was younger, and now she loves creating and making things.)
She is much like her father (happy-go-lucky, etc), but she is also mature for her age. She is 14 years old.
She is also a dancer (mainly dances ballet and contemporary).
Her nickname is Ellie, and her favorite snack is warm cinnamon rolls.

Her eyes sometimes flash green when she's angry.
She is 15 years old.
Chrissy loves animals; she has taken in a baby donkey, which she has named Posy. (the Coachman was going to leave Posy to die, as he didn't need any more donkeys at the moment; Chrissy started to care for her)

Redesign of Lock Shock and Barrel for post canon fanfiction
Okay, it's kind of weird to post redesigns before the fanfic itself comes out, but if I do it only after writing the first chapter, a lot of time will pass, and I need to post something. In fact, this is a rather large-scale “project” and the actual redesign of the main characters took a lot of time. I hope you like it. Moreover, let it be a short excursion and introduction to the situation before the start of the main story. First I'll start with Lock Shock and Barrel
Tumblr media
Below is a brief description of each of the trio.
Shock
Tumblr media
After the failed Christmas, when the trio returned to the treehouse (the incident between Jack and Oogie was still unknown for them at that time), Shock was the first to feel that something was wrong, discovered that the Boogie was in critical condition, and led the group. "operation" to save their boss by stuffing his "skin" with anything (cotton wool, leaves, insects, sawdust, etc.). After which her attitude towards Jack and Sally (and towards all residents of the city) becomes more hostile than before. She also tries to turn Lock and Barrel against the people of Halloween town, trying to isolate them in the house, fearing attacks from the townspeople after the incident.Аt the same time, she begins to take an interest in people's lives, carefully hiding it from everyone else and feels all the delights of the beginning of adolescence.
Lock
Tumblr media
Lock hasn’t changed much since the end of the canonical events, but he has a strong desire to seem like the main one in the trio and, more importantly, truly grown-up and independent (he wanted this before, but now it has taken a not very healthy turn). This happened after Oogie was injured and Shock had to take full responsibility for their lives while Boogie man was in a sorry state. So throughout the story, he will make many mistakes and stupid things, from which (we hope) he will learn his lesson.Lock's attitude towards the townsfolk and towards Jack and Sally is almost the same as Shock's, but his constant hyperactivity does not allow him to sit still in the house, so he does not agree with the idea of isolation from his world.
Barrel
Tumblr media
Barrel... it's just Barrel. For him, little has changed since the main events. He is not burdened with the same burden of responsibility as his older siblings, but has an important task. Due to his age, Barrell does not fully understand the whole situation, but he senses that something is wrong. Despite his clumsiness and slow-wittedness (and whining about and without reason), he is a very empathic person and is an emotional ballast for all members of his “family”. Despite all his attempts to provide support, he himself begins to move away from his family and withdraw into himself.
Unlike the older siblings, he does not have negative feelings towards Jack, Sally and the townspeople in general, but is not against self-isolation.
Аdditional facts: 1.Shock wears a bag to collect suitable “stuff” for Boogie man, as well as to hide various human things there. 2.Lock has his own butterfly knife for "self-defense", but mostly just shows off with various tricks (and earns himself cuts). 3.Barrell decided to sew extra pockets onto Shock's costume to store lollipops and candies in.
Tumblr media
Thank you very much for reading, new announcements and the first chapter of fanfiction will follow soon! The link will appear in a separate post and will be added to previous posts!

Welcome Home: Our Neck of the Woods Au
Tumblr media
Meet and Greet the Neighbors
We have uncovered a few scripts and character artwork about the wonderful new cast of neighbors. Meet the not so fishy but oh so very friendly shark who is always smelling their absolute best.
Tumblr media
Corey Cologne
"Get ready with Corey Cologne! The Neck of the Woods finest perfumer and self care specialist. This gentle giant is friendliest whale shark around! Always ready to give his neighbors a little self care whenever they need to relax or look their best for showtime!"
Corey Cologne would have been the first ever shark puppet to be broadcast on the show. From Lilie's flowers to the sawdust from Henry's overalls, his great sense of smell is there to help him discover and make his next signature eau de parfume . His perfume shop was where he resided and sold an array of different perfumes, colognes, and body care items. This was also used to advertise some real-world products to kids and parents alike. His skit in the special showcased him, making a sugar scrub with Sally and Julie, hinting at segments where he would teach about good hygiene and self care
Corey would exchange his goods for compliments, songs, neighborly gossips, or unique accessories. It is noted in some scripts that Paisley is a regular and would be seen at the shop frequently. He would supply Corey with unique clothing item of their creation or compliments on how colorful his scales are in exchange for some colognes and conditioners. Jenny is also noted as being Corey's favorite customer. Providing him with flowers and items gathered from her serenades around the neighborhood for his products.
Illustrated materials showed that Corey's puppet was a walk-around puppet, typically to keep him in frame with his neighbors big and small.

W.C. Fields and an unidentified actress in Poppy, 1923. This was a musical with music by Stephen Jones and Arthur Samuels, book and lyrics by Dorothy Donnelly, additional music by John Egan, and additional songs with lyrics by Howard Dietz and Irving Caesar.
Madge Kennedy had the title role and Luella Gear was also in the cast. Fields played a character named Professor Eustace McGargle. The story, set in 1874 Connecticut, concerns a circus barker and con man, Prof. McGargle, who tries to pass off his foster daughter, Poppy, as a long-lost heiress. It turns out, of course, that Poppy really is an heiress.
It opened on September 3, 1923, and ran for a successful 346 performances, closing on June 28, 1924. It included elements of revue, including specialty numbers. Its success established Fields's comic con man persona and led to film versions, also starring Fields. The first was a silent called Sally of the Sawdust (1925), directed by D.W. Griffith, and the second was Poppy (1936).

So like, i had a thought about 3-14 while re listening and like do you think that howdy might've just grabbed the wrong box on accident and instead of admitting he was wrong, just kept selling it as potatoes. Bc he seemed a bit surprised when she read the label too lol also he obviously knows the difference which can be noted but either Sally doesn't or she just went along bc she also didnt want to admit she could possibly be wrong you know, bc she did notice that the name was weird but when howdy kept on selling she was just like 'oh of course!' Lol i feel like it fits both of their characters you know, also i feel like i remember clown saying something before about how sally will pretend she knows something even if she doesn't, the other things he gave her could be explained like that too except the woodchip cereal bc why would woodchips and sawdust be in a box the same way cereal is? Anyway ultimate salesman capitalism brain rot meets of course its just weird i could never be wrong ever, you know lol
that is Definitely a likely possibility! personally im still sticking to the theory of "Howdy is aware that they can consume non-food items / barely any of the food items are real" since he goes on to be like "sponge" "woodchips n sawdust", and tbh i can't read his tone as anything other than Called Out But Trying To Play It Off And Sell The Damn Thing
plus i mean... woodchips n sawdust would be a Perfect cereal box prop-filler, wouldn't it? i imagine if you fill a box with the stuff and shake it, it'd sound convincingly like cereal. plus i bet you could make sponge look similarly enough to bread to use as a background prop. a shelf filler.

Welcome Home (Part 6)
ok so this has been going on for much longer than i thought it would (i started making this post in july, its september now, so i might not remember stuff from before bc its been so long)
now that i have some free time, i can finally continue and hopefully finish this
anyways i decided i was gonna organize all the secret stuff ive found so far by making tab groups
which was the BEST decision i made because it made me go back to old links (the askew letter stuff) and i have found NEW stuff !! on the old stuff !!
all of that and more under the cut
so first off
Tumblr media
bug spotted !! i got scared seeing it LOL
Tumblr media
an animation doodle !!
so lets start with the bug video
Tumblr media
ok so until the end i was so confused what the hell i was looking at, and im pretty sure that its paint
what the painting's supposed to be, ive got no idea but very fascinating
this bug video was Barnaby recounting the day's events to Home, most of those events being other bug videos
also !! i copied the link of this bug video and noticed it ended in '14-14-bh'
i checked the other bug video links and they're all similar !! which means there's 14 of these videos and hopefully ive found them all (i will be re-organizing this so that its in order)
also i think the last two letters are the first letters in the names of whichever neighbors are talking in the videos
ok ive ordered them and i am missing videos 13, 7, and 3! so there's only 3 more bugs for me to find !! hopefully i didnt miss any in past searching (but i will probably double-check if by the end im still missing some videos)
next up is the doodle audio
so this one is titled 'way' and its Wally asking why cant he hear us, and it ends with him saying 'let me in'
im not sure how many of these audios there are, but im sure they all amount to one giant message and i just need to find all the pieces and put them in the right order
well thats it for the new stuff in the old stuff, onto new-new stuff
i last explored The Playfellow Exhibition and the distorted version of it, so now its time to go through the guestbook!
Tumblr media
aww thats cute
Tumblr media
OH ANOTHER ONE
ok, this one is Wally talking about how we've looked into his eyes so many times and that we're looking at him now
tbh lowkey i was expecting his eyes to just appear out of nowhere when he said that, like in that one askew letters link
now onto the actual guestbook
currently just going through all the doodles on it since if u open the image they have titles in the tab
Tumblr media
bug spotted !!
so it leads us to video number 7, and its Julie and Eddie playing pretend business! like that one drawing
also breen berry strikes again
Barnaby calls and asks for Wally
Tumblr media
also the little drawing is just so cute
i love these bug videos even tho they have some ominous implications
its just all the neighbors being silly together its so cute dude !!
anyways continuing the search on the guestbook
i am forever gonna laugh at Wally giving a drawing of Barnaby bc a guest said they love clowns and Frank said Barnaby was a clown
Tumblr media
oh bug spotted
Tumblr media
this is cute too !! Sally buying stuff at Howdy's !! also ?? wdym one large sponge Howdy?? WOODCHIPS N SAWDUST ???
and at the end when Wally pushes the box further im just imagining he's just been standing there the whole time with his groceries and im laughing
thats video number 3, so now im just missing 13
well i think thats it for the guestbook i mean there are new doodles and messages on page 8, but nothing all too interesting
and that is, in fact, everything new i think? i am still missing bug video number 13 but if push comes to shove i'll just search up where to find it haha
or maybe even guess the link code since they all follow the same format
i guess time to go back and see if i have missed anything
Tumblr media
oh i did miss something
yay video 13 !!
Tumblr media
silly Eddie u need to chill out (flashbacks to Frank telling him that he always did work too hard)
and thats all the bug videos yay !!!!
ok so i guessed the order but then i went and searched up all audio locations in Welcome Home just to make sure that i got everything and the article i found put it in order too lol
'I Will Help You understand' 'I will find a way soon Neighbor' sooo very fascinating
and yep i played it in order and it soubds like it could be one giant message
the last one, 'Neighbor', is in morse code tho but idk if i want to try and decode it myself or just search up the answer lol
ok i have no idea how to translate the audio into the dots and dashes so i will just look up the answer
so i have not found any answers LOL maybe i'll try my hand at translating it myself again some other time
well!!! this is the end !! i have seen and gone through literally everything !! (well i hope i have because i will lose my mind if i missed anything else)
its the end of this series !! for now at least
will definitely come back when there's a new update, but maybe i'll post something about all my theories in the future
alright then !! byebye !! now that ive finished the Welcome Home update, i will be moving on to arcadekitten's games! tune in next time for my playthrough of It's Not Me, It's My Basement (when will it be posted?? i have no idea !!) farewell, neighbors!
