Tech workers spent a whole generation conceiving of themselves as entrepreneurs who bargained, nerd-to-nerd, with other entrepreneurs who needed workers as much as workers needed paychecks.
These workers allowed themselves to be convinced that being “extremely hardcore” — that is, working body- and mind-ruining hours (without overtime pay) was a badge of honor.
They let themselves believe that their bosses gave them gourmet cafeteria food, “on-campus” fitness centers and daycare because they were valued workers — and not because this created the conditions where workers could be induced to put in longer hours without additional pay.
They conceived of themselves as ascetic monks, a priesthood that labored every hour God sent to bring digitization to the world. Meanwhile, their bosses’ wealth soared, even as their own working conditions deteriorated.
Tech workers may be prone to the same rationalization and self-deception as the rest of us, but (like the rest of us), they aren’t fools. Anything that can’t go on forever will eventually stop.
As conditions and prospects worsened, tech workers’ identities as workers emerged from a generation-long coma. They penned manifestos, walked off the job, and formed unions.

okay thats interesting! in the SF try-outs during the song "legally blonde" she sings about how she cant be legally blonde, while in the official version AND THE DEMO she sings about letting her be legally blonde. which means that at some point they changed the lyrics around, and then changed them back! laurence o'keefe.... nell benjamin.... what occurs in your twisted minds
Does it get better than this? Digitally enhanced classic video of Chelsea from Specialized Videos (Michigan, U.S.A.), deactivated by owner mid-2010s. Prepared by SF-content super uploader Juniorjunior at Smoking Fetish Kingdom. Added in mid-February 2023. Thanks to Juniorjunior (wishing a tumblr account opens in that name). Not holding my breath for Juniorjunior to move over to tumblr (maintaining a presence on SFK as well). Fun to make wishes, though. This is 33 seconds of heaven, smoking-fetish style, that is. She appeared as No. 10b on the recent Top-25 all-time favorite SF models list, released in January. Received 18 notes (likes/reblog), a paltry number considering her sensationally beautiful looks. This clip was not shot in High Def but with Juniorjunior's (we're guessing) state-of-the-art video/audio editing tools, apps and equipment, this is better than if it were done in high definition back in the day (2000-10). This is a treasure, this clip, as is Chelsea. Hard to articulate why this is not ★★★★★'s, other than to say if it ran closer to a minute or beyond then 5 stars would have awarded. Don't have the evidence, just a gut feeling, that it is a gargantuan task to prepare even 33 seconds for the SF Community's pleasure. So heaps of praise for Juniorjunior. Going to go out on a limb here and say Juniorjunior has other things going in life that need to be addressed aside from the well-dedicated time spent with SF video selection, editing and posting. Don't you think? We at the ole VS120s Hound SF-content shop certainly do. Chelsea has the gorgeousness of a high-paid mainstream model. In some dictionaries, we're sure, the entry for sexy has a picture of her accompanying the definition. Her smoking style is strong, though she has never been a champion in the exhale department. Hope you enjoy. Expect more enhanced clips from Juniorjunior to be posted here in the near and distant future. And, free to admit, always looking to bring more Chelsea to you all, whenever possible.
Remember when tech workers dreamed of working for a big company for a few years, before striking out on their own to start their own company that would knock that tech giant over?
Then that dream shrank to: work for a giant for a few years, quit, do a fake startup, get acqui-hired by your old employer, as a complicated way of getting a bonus and a promotion.
Then the dream shrank further: work for a tech giant for your whole life, get free kombucha and massages on Wednesdays.
And now, the dream is over. All that’s left is: work for a tech giant until they fire your ass, like those 12,000 Googlers who got fired six months after a stock buyback that would have paid their salaries for the next 27 years.
We deserve better than this. We can get it.

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion at this point, but I feel like at one point it was pretty broadly accepted that -punk in scifi genres meant taking the specified type of technology to a speculative extreme. Not that the word "punk" ever meant an extreme of technology, just like the word "core" never meant aesthetic. And yeah, cyberpunk did initially have some interest in its interpretation of a punk ethos, but idk it just seems like steampunk and dieselpunk (and even solarpunk, arguably, before it evolved into a political ethos) were never claiming to be anything other than scifi exploring extremes of particular types of tech, so it doesn't make much sense to me when people criticize them for not being a totally different thing.
(Now, I can't really speak for why hopepunk is using -punk. Probably actually about rebelling against pessimism?)
