#throws back rest of drink and slams glass on table okay so the thing about the song minwoo fight. it haunts me. #i wrote a twitter thread about it a while ago has more direct quotes/screenshots of the moments i bring up but i can distill it here. #1. kdj is willing to talk about things that upset him if they are no longer affecting him and/or they are 'normal' things to be upset by. #hes willing to do the KDJ Cringe Comp in the prologue + commiserate with ysa when he believes neither of them got the promotion + discuss #his mothers book somewhat candidly with ysa. HOWEVER. he doesnt go into lots of detail about his backstory + cuts himself off when he gets #present day. AND when he learns ysa got the promotion he immediately begins to dissociate. AND when hes discussing his moms book not only #does he bring it up out of the blue (ysa even thinks hes changing ghe subject‚ which means abrupt convo shifts are somewhat expected) but he #discusses it flippantly and then tries to play it off like he was lying and that he and his mother were a normal‚ albeit strained‚ family. #like he straight up lies and says 'My mother and I are ordinary people and my father had an accident when I was young…' #aka avoiding discussing his issues if it hits too close to home and/or reads a little abbormal!!!!!! #okay point 2. the song minwoo fight is (at that point in the story) the time that has had the greatest effect on the fourth wall. #while it shook before (usually in response to seeing his mom)‚ kdjs initial altercation is the first time the 4th wall thins enough to #actually slow kdj down. and when hsy is like hey‚ whats up?? hes like. oh you know. hes just one of those normal traumas. #which is the FUNNIEST THING IN THE WORLD FOR HIM TO SAY. EVEN HSY WAS WEIRDED OUT. #but. okay. so whats the deal with song minwoo? well: back in high school‚ he bullied kdj for reading a lot. #and like. yeah kdjs not lying‚ getting bullied in high school IS a somewhat 'normal'/commonplace trauma many have experienced. #and thats kind of the only reason hes telling hsy about it/not freaking the fuck out more than he already is. its super normal! #that brings us to point 3. how does kdj overcome this and fight song minwoo? well‚ this is where is gets especially interesting. #the song minwoo fight is‚ to my recollection‚ the ONLY TIME kdj ever feels sympathetic for his younger self. #when he starts fighting song minwoo‚ his thoughts arent about getting revenge for himself or anything: he detaches it so that he is acting #on behalf of 17yo kdj. there are THREE SEPARATE LINES during this fight where he separates himself from 17yo kdj. #which is a fascinating thing to do. not only is this trauma 'normal' but also‚ its not affecting HIM‚ its affecting 17yo kdj! way different! #this proves the rule for all the other stuff but is also an interesting comparison to his other interactions/thoughts about his younger self #iirc he throws a book with his 15yos thoughts into the dark of his Mind Palace. and‚ of course‚ his altercation with the oldest dream. #the difference is: OD/being 15 are such sore points to him TO THIS DAY + they are highly specific to his circumstances. #he is so uncomfortable with that. as i like to think ive demonstrated here. #the song minwoo fight is interesting because it more firmly established two things: if kdj must engage with his hurt‚ he will do so by #by detaching himself/his feelings from the experience. its easier to externalize a narrative than it is to feel a narrative #second point: if it is impossible to distance himself from his own feelings/hurt then‚ ultimately‚ it is undeserving of sympathy. #so yeah thats the gist. if that makes any sense.
