RYAN ROBINSON: FORFEIT
Tumblr media
Forfeit – Ryan Robinson Release Date: August 26th, 2022
Track Listing:
1. All Talk 2. Nothing But The Best 3. Shortcuts 4. Prime 5. The Boxer (Rob's Mix) 6. On a Cold Night
Forfeit is the latest album by Montreal-based Ryan Robinson, formerly of the band Late Night Takeaway. This is a noisy and vulnerable EP full of minor keys that has a very 90s sound. It has a grunge element to it; I’d never know it was contemporary. You can almost feel the angst and emotion poured into every track.
There’s a lot of complicated instrument work on this EP – strange time signatures and patterns that cement its alternative sound. There’s distortion, key changes, and weird rhythms that create a unique style I rarely hear at this level of independent artist. It took me a few listens to really settle with and understand it, and I still don’t fully understand it. But this isn’t a bad thing – it just shows the personal and complex care taken in the recording. It’s a puzzling release, but it’s distinct.
The opening “All Talk” quickly establishes the melancholy atmosphere of the release. Ryan’s vocals are low and slightly slurred intentionally, dragging his voice as he sings of returning to an old place, waiting for someone to come back who probably never will. Returning home to a small town (“people change, but not here they don’t”) is a common musical theme, but Ryan’s vocals and notes express it in a very individual and raw way. This sets a theme and tone for the release.
“Nothing but the Best” continues the themes of regret and reflecting on better times. The chorus repeats “I wish you nothing but the best” and there’s a lot of grief attached to these vocals. I’m not sure how much of this is autobiographical, but fact or fiction, the feelings expressed are convincing.
The middle track “Shortcuts” uses trumpets in a really fun way. It’s merry, upbeat, and is in contrast to the more emotional themes of the album. These are complemented by a passionate guitar solo that says a lot despite being instrumental. There’s a lot of story being told with music in this song: it has a feel to it that goes further back than the 90s – almost like something from the 60s. I got a Velvet Underground vibe. Personally, this was my favourite track.
“Prime” is a haunting, melancholy song about happier times in the past and regrets: “All the world’s in dire straits and I don’t know how to address it.” There’s wailing vocalizing; it’s simple, but it works. You can genuinely get the sadness expressed here – perhaps not just musical themes, but a larger reflection of the musician’s real life state of mind. In this way, the mood expressed is very contemporary of the 2020s.
Finishing up on the fifth track, this one is perhaps the most pure grunge sound of the EP. It speaks in metaphors and the guitar work is almost otherworldly. Little is said but much is conveyed.
The final song is more of a hopeful tune. It’s a bit sarcastic in its lyrics and vocal style – less edgy and upset than the others. We continue with the distorted guitar work. The track goes slow and minimal then back to fast and all over the place. Repetitions of “never gonna give up” accompany the rough-sounding music, all ending with a crescendo and fade.
Overall this is an intriguing and personal EP. It has a lot to say both lyrically and especially musically. It’s clear a lot of work and feeling went into it, and it creates a memorable experience for the listener as the artist shares himself with us.

Steph: Hey, Alex, how about a little inspirational music?
Gabe: That would bring the problem into scale.
Ryan: I was just about to note that.
Charlotte: You've cleffed me in twain!
Riley: I think you all should take a rest.
Steph: Alright, that enough, guys. This ain't a music hall...it's a bar!

All of Andy Robinson's episodes of Ryan's Hope
I talked about it and after years I have finally made a YouTube playlist of every episode of ryans hope that andy appears in. There's a lot. There's so many.
The show is extremely important to me. I think the reason why nobody's seen it is because they don't want to sift through the entire internet tracking down over 100 episodes that are not in a direct numerical order. I did it for you.
This show has some of Andy's best acting I've ever seen. Kate Mulgrew is also there and they're siblings and they are best friends. Please watch Ryan's Hope. Thanks.

My least favorite thing about fandom racism bingo is how conveniently stans have just “never seen” the bile that gets spewed against characters of color and the actors who play them. And if/when you show them the screenshots or links it’s all, “they’re just trolls” or “those aren’t real fans.” Spare me.

It's the solstice tonight, and a good time to reflect on my favourite books from the past year.
I'm making very little attempt to rank these titles. They're simply the books that I enjoyed most, and they're presented in the order I read them. • "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet," by Becky Chambers (2014) • "The Galaxy, and the Ground Within," by Becky Chambers (2021) • "Locklands," by Robert Jackson Bennett (2022) • "Beloved," by Toni Morrison (1987) • "Exhalation," by Ted Chiang (2019) • "Fugitive Telemetry," by Martha Wells (2021) • "Becoming Kin: An Indigenous Call to Unforgetting the Past and Reimagining Our Future," by Patty Krawec (2022) • "The Vanished Birds," by Simon Jimenez (2020) • "The Netanyahus: An Account of a Minor and Ultimately Even Negligible Episode in the History of a Very Famous Family," by Joshua Cohen (2021) • "Utopia Avenue," by by David Mitchell (2020) • "The Calcutta Chromosome: A Novel of Fevers, Delirium & Discovery," by Amitav Ghosh (1995) • "Moon of the Crusted Snow," by Waubgeshig Rice (2018) • "Bea Wolf," by Zach Weinersmith; illustrated by Boulet (2023) • "Fighting the Moon," by Julie McGalliard (2021) • "The Empress of Salt and Fortune," by Nghi Vo (2020) • "The Glass Hotel," by Emily St. John Mandel (2020) • "New York 2140," by Kim Stanley Robinson (2017) • "When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain," by Nghi Vo (2020) • "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Omnibus," by Ryan North et al; illustrated by Erica Henderson & Derek Charm & Jacob Chabot & Naomi Franquiz & Tom Fowler & Rico Renzi et al (2022) • "Buffalo Is the New Buffalo: Stories," by Chelsea Vowel (2022) • "Greenwood: A Novel," by Michael Christie (2019) • "The House of Rust," by Khadija Abdalla Bajaber (2021) • "Children of Memory," by Adrian Tchaikovsky (2022) • "Jade Legacy," by Fonda Lee (2021) • "A Deadly Education: A Novel: Lesson One of the Scholomance," by Naomi Novik (2020) • "The Last Graduate: A Novel: Lesson Two of the Scholomance," by Naomi Novik (2021) • "The Golden Enclaves: Lesson Three of the Scholomance," by Naomi Novik (2022) • "To Be Taught if Fortunate," by Becky Chambers (2019) • "Helgoland: Making Sense of the Quantum Revolution," by Carlo Rovelli (2020), translated by Erica Segre & Simon Carnell (2021) • "A Psalm for the Wild-Built," by Becky Chambers (2021) Ah, but I said I'd make "very little attempt" to rank them, not "no attempt." So here is that attempt: my favourite five books from the last solar orbit — the five I enjoyed even more than those other thirty — also presented in the order I read them.
• "Nona the Ninth," by Tamsyn Muir (2022) • "Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands," by Kate Beaton (2022) • "Record of a Spaceborn Few," by Becky Chambers (2018) • "Briar Rose," by Jane Yolen (1992) • "Babel, or, The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution," by R.F. Kuang (2022)
