Tourism and Rural Development: A Policy Perspective.
Tumblr media
Tourism has high potential to stimulate economic growth and social change in rural areas because it contributes to local economies, support other products value chains, distributes benefits across both seasonal and geographic grounds, and promotes the conservation of cultural and natural heritage. Through the UNWTO Tourism for Rural Development Programme, the Organization seeks to enhance these and other opportunities that tourism can bring to rural areas. To devise adequate actions and develop impactful initiatives, it is essential to have solid knowledge and data to help support and monitor the evolution of this important agenda.

KVINNA TILL KVINNA FOUNDATION
The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation is an international organization that has been empowering DRC women since 2009. It calculates that 60% of women in the DRC live below the poverty line and have extremely low levels of political participation. The organization works to gain respect for women’s rights and end discriminatory gender practices. Kvinna till Kvinna helps women participate in learning exchanges that provide education and economic empowerment. It also helps finance certain activities of the Rien Sans les Femmes (Nothing Without Women) movement, a collaboration of Congolese women’s rights activists. By supporting smaller partner organizations in the DRC, Kvinna till Kvinna has definitively lowered gender-based violence against women and has boosted political participation for DRC women. For example, the partner organization AFEM (Association des Femmes des Médias du Sud Kivu) is a collaboration of female journalists. It uses a radio station, Mama Radio, as its platform to empower DRC women.  Mama Radio caught on and AFEM was able to report reduced violence against women.
WOMEN FOR WOMEN INTERNATIONAL
Women for Women International empowers DRC women in numerous ways. Since 2004 it has supported more than 106,000 Congolese women. Its most recent impact evaluation reports increased access to credit, savings and assets.  Second, it reports an increase in women’s ability to pursue entrepreneurship. Finally, it shares that women are benefitting from improved diets and mental health access. In 2022, 256 women received advocacy training in land titling. It also expanded upon its health insurance projects which were able to reduce fees for women and their families by around 50%.
WOMEN'S PEACE AND HUMANITARIAN FUND (WPHF)
WPHF is an international organization that helps empower grassroots organizations to help women become more involved in political affairs. In the DRC, it works with Spotlight Initiative, another women’s rights organization to fund 30 projects that 51 women’s organizations in the DRC spearheaded. These organizations seek to eliminate violence against women and encourage political mobility for women. For example, WPHF supports our GRACE, which seeks to promote gender-based equality and peace in North Kivu. It also supports CAUSE RURALE, which focuses on providing humanitarian aid to reinforce stronger institutions for women.  Finally, WPHF supports AFPDE, in South Kivu and promotes the strength of women’s organizations.
WOMEN, CRADLE OF ABUNDANCE
Women, Cradle of Abundance is a DRC organization. It has been empowering women in the DRC by attempting the eliminate systemic poverty for women. The organization provides physical safety, medical care, counseling and community services for women. It also helps improve education for women and girls by supporting schools for disadvantaged children. Women, Cradle of Abundance provides women with micro-savings and microloans. For example, it has provided 199 microloans to Kinshasha women. This helped them start or expand their businesses.

htbahb au dump !! because the brainrot is too strong
general context things
currently, the characters are in their college years. even though the plan is to have the main storyline happen when they already have jobs, their college years established dynamics between them. some dynamics luckily haven't changed over the years, but others may take longer to rebuild.
cleo owns an apartment close to uni, and they share it with grian & etho.
joel & scar live as interns on campus.
lizzie, jimmy, bdubs, and pearl are also interns, with lizzie & pearl as roommates in a different building and jimmy & bdubs living across joel & scar
au prolly takes place in a semi-rural area; it started as a town with a small population and lots of farmland, but it's slowly evolving to follow other highly urbanized cities.
the town hasn't gone fully urban since it takes pride in utilizing its land with locally manufactured agricultural resources and artisan goods.
courses/classes they're taking prolly
cleo - horticulture (with sculpting at the side)
joel - agribusiness management & entrepreneurship (he's not super into it yet)
scar - economics
etho - agricultural chemistry (secretly also likes music)
grian - literature (also enjoys photography)
lizzie - music (likes to experiment with different art mediums tho)
bdubs - architecture
jimmy - horticulture
pearl - economics
and other dynamics between the group !!
lizzie sometimes pulls bdubs & cleo to her experiments. every summer break, they take an art related class together. so far, they've done painting and dancing. (bdubs has already enrolled them in a modeling class for the upcoming break, but the other two don't know yet.)
joel, pearl, and scar would discuss their business and/or economics related classes to grian, and grian just smiles and nods in respect (of them and their friendship) even if he doesn't understand most things they're saying. ("wait, what is a griffin good?" "griffen, grian, with an e.")
the real reason why joel, pearl, & scar talk about their classes to grian is because they like messing with him. (he's not as good with hiding his confused look as he thinks.)
jimmy once accidentally found an opening to one of the private properties of a big business in town - a flower field. whenever he and cleo have floriculture assignments that involve getting flowers, they pick their flowers from there. sometimes, they'd discuss the flowers there, ways to care for them, flower meanings, etc. sometimes, joel and etho join them. as loud as they are, they've only had one instance where they almost got caught. (they never brought joel and etho with them since then.)
pearl & scar buy newspapers daily by the campus gate to chat about the current events, especially ones relating to their degree. they quickly befriended the newspaper vendor as he also had a lot of food for thought regarding the things going on. their discussions help them a lot, aiding them in their essays and analysis about economic policies and applications.
etho would sometimes ask lizzie about music theory. what was supposed to be a few messages would end up in hours of them talking about music. eventually, lizzie found out about etho's music hobby, and she's the only one that knows.
grian owns a polaroid camera, and he sometimes takes candid pictures of the gang. his subjects are usually cleo & etho, mostly because they're his roommates and he spends the most time with them, but there's also a handful of pictures with scar & pearl.
joel and lizzie started dating after scar, bdubs, & pearl convinced him to go to an open mic event in the dorms during their first year; lizzie happened to be one of the performers.
Tumblr media
if you've made it this far, any thoughts on what music genres/artists each life series member listens to? totally not for oneshot purposes in this au,,,

David Bier for The UnPopulist:
In a free society, markets incentivize people to contribute to the welfare of others through their work, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Thanks to freedom, America isn’t a fixed pie—it’s a growing pie. It is exactly for these reasons that so many people from around the world come to the United States, and it is exactly for those same reasons that we should let them come legally.
Immigrants Can Save America from Demographic Decline
The United States desperately needs more workers. Currently, the U.S. population is growing slower than at any point in its history. From 2020 to 2023, international migration was responsible for 73% of the meager 1% population growth during those three years. Without immigration, the U.S. population will start to decline by the 2030s. Already, about 40% of the counties in the United States saw declining populations in 2023. People are necessary to maintain buildings, roads, schools, hospitals, and businesses because population decline erodes property values and forces business and school closures. This population death spiral has afflicted both urban and rural counties. In fact, over the last decade, rural America lost population for the first time in U.S. history. By 2030, population aging or decline will reduce tax revenue per capita in nearly every state. The country has already seen how population decline will manifest in the future. Major cities saw significant out-migration in the 1960s and 1970s before they stabilized and rebounded in the 1990s and 2000s, in major part thanks to new immigrants. The out-migration led to housing vacancies and job losses, which contributed to increased crime, and the subsequent in-migration went hand in hand with lower crime and more business creation.
Immigrants Can Save America from Labor Force Decline
Along with slower population growth, labor force growth in the United States has also declined for decades, falling by 65% from the levels observed in the 1960s—a period when the immigrant share of the U.S. population bottomed out—to the most recent decade. This decline in labor force growth was even more pronounced among individuals without a college degree. These declines happened despite immigration. From 1995 to 2022, immigrants and their children accounted for 70% of labor force growth. There are jobs available for immigrants to fill. Currently, U.S. nonfarm employers have about 8.5 million open jobs. Every single month after January 2021 had more job openings than any month before it, back to the start of the job openings data series in the year 2000. Filling these open jobs could have increased U.S. Gross Domestic Product by over $2.5 trillion. Going forward, these unfilled job openings will cost the U.S. economy over half a trillion dollars per year. These jobs will not be filled without immigrants, as the U.S. prime-age employment rate is at a near-record high. With more Americans retiring than entering the labor force, immigrants have accounted for 100% of U.S. labor force growth since December 2019. Without immigrants, the working-age population will fall by about 6 million over the next two decades. We should not be concerned that immigrants will arrive and choose not to work, either. Immigrants will work if the government allows them to. Despite numerous legal obstacles to finding jobs in the United States, immigrants are more likely to work than U.S.-born workers overall and at every education level—a difference that grows significantly among the least skilled. Immigrant adults without high school degrees are about 20 percentage points more likely to work than comparable U.S.-born adults. Furthermore, nearly 97% of immigrants who looked for jobs in 2022 found them.
[...]
Immigration Can Help Prolong the Life of Social Security
Since the 1960s, the ratio of workers to retirees has plummeted, and the Social Security Trustees now estimate that Social Security will be short nearly 35 million workers to fund the system in the 2030s. It will have to cut benefits by at least 23% in 2034, if not earlier, or raise taxes to cover the shortfall. The situation will not improve in the future, with benefit cuts reaching 30% and the shortfall in workers hitting 80 million by 2080. According to the Social Security Administration Trustees 2022 report, increasing net immigration from 829,000 to nearly 1.7 million per year would reduce the annual burden of Social Security in 2097 by 1.5% of taxable payroll (the equivalent of $137 billion in 2022). This immigration range is based on what Social Security Trustees think might be possible given the current law, but 1.7 million immigrants per year are not significant as a percentage of the U.S. population compared to the level of immigration in many other countries. If immigrants, their children, and their grandchildren added the necessary 80 million additional workers by 2080, the savings would amount to $455 billion per year in 2080.
[...]
America’s Ill-Conceived Immigration System
The United States is benefiting from immigration despite its outdated and dysfunctional immigration system. Congress has not updated this system in over three decades. The main permanent immigration options available for immigrants abroad are:
The Refugee Program: The global population of displaced people reached 114 million in 2023, and the United States accepted barely 60,000 through its refugee program—a mere 0.05%.
Family‐Sponsored Immigration: The capped family‐sponsored system currently has a backlog of over 8.3 million, and alarmingly, 1.6 million of these applicants currently waiting will likely be dead before they can receive a green card.
Employer‐Sponsored Immigration: Annually capped at just 140,000 green cards, this category currently has a backlog of over 1.8 million. The country‐based caps mean that wait times for Indian workers with a master’s degree will be longer than the average person’s lifespan. Employer-sponsored green cards are close to impossible to obtain for those without very high wage offers and a work visa, and the main work visa—the H1B—is capped at 25% of demand. For those coming temporarily, the H2B seasonal worker program for nonagricultural jobs is the only path for most U.S. seasonal low‐skilled jobs, and it has an annual cap of 66,000. Although Congress temporarily doubled this cap this year, that level was only about half the level required to meet the number of positions requested.
The Diversity Lottery: The diversity green card lottery is available to immigrants only if they are not from legal immigrants’ main origin countries and have a high-school degree or experience in a skilled job, and it offers entrants just a 0.2% chance of receiving a green card.
In 2023, about 34 million people entered a legal process to try to obtain a green card, yet barely more than 1 million will succeed and receive legal permanent residence—just 3% of applicants.
David Bier wrote in The UnPopulist that America will be in great harm if it doesn’t permit more legal immigration.

7 Ways To Experience Rural Homestays of India
The meaning and authenticity of one’s travel and experience can be enhanced much better in the “real environment”. Instead of creating a simulation, “living like the inhabitants” gives you the chance to enjoy the best of both worlds temporarily. It also highlights the importance of social entrepreneurship clubbed with sustainable tourism. So you don’t have to spend heavy amounts to get the best vacation check on your to-do list. Countryside living and experiencing the world through the eyes of the natives about the way they eat, sleep, live, enjoy festivities, culture, attire, etc. can be explored in a much better manner and is a good opportunity for the small businessmen to make “ends meet means”.
Here are the seven ways to explore Rural Homestays of India:
1. Culture connecting the dots
It is through rural that you can better understand the true culture of a place. They will exactly tell you what that place has to offer because they have been living there for ages. Instead, if you explore the urban tourism setting they have a particular list of places to cover and might not take you to that sunrise view that you might have heard all along. Urban tourism does not offer you greater flexibility in experiencing and living the way you want to.
2. Word of mouth publicity
When it comes to marketing a place, you can get an expectation vs. reality check. How you see the place or museum being portrayed on the internet is not the same way it actually is years later. Ask a ruralite and they will market the best of places to you where you can eat, shop and so much more. In turn, after you have explored the place, you will be doing the same via social media or to your friends in person.
Let’s take you down memory lane, remember when you visited a new place with your parents and your dad would stop the car in between just to confirm about road directions and ask about that Dhaba or Temple? This is exactly what we are talking about here.
3. Trusted source
Since you are a fresher in that new set of surroundings, few people can even end up conning you. For example, have you noticed how when foreigners visit a place, the rickshaw wallas charge them bomb prices or when they go shopping they price three times what even we Indians end up paying? So ask a local to provide you some guidance because they are comparatively a better-trusted source.
4. Pocket-Friendly Stays
The travelogue in you, not all the time can afford to spend handsome amounts on the luxury stay at a Hotel, Villa, or buffet at Fancy places. Instead, make your stay simple yet worthwhile while creating memories and cherishing them for a lifetime. The Rural setup provides you with basic amenities clubbed with engagement with the localities and that should be good to go.
5. Sustainable Traveling
There is no need to build additional roads or buildings which don’t fit in the scenery or are out of sync with the traditional lifestyles. Staying in the village also implies that travellers eat locally produced food, often coming directly from the hosts’ backyard. The cooking takes place with the help of the veggies grown in the backyard. When there are hotel pools, hotel kitchens, and laundry, the water consumption is far less than in touristy areas, and your whole stay is more sustainable!
6. Supporting Local Community
The local commuters have an emotional attachment to one of their biggest assets which is their land. This land often is exploited and taken over by business owners or government officials to gain better profit margins. The rural people lack literary efficiency, and as a result they cannot fight for their rights. Hence, when we allow ourselves as guests to be hosted by them, it will allow them to make decent economic gains and feed their families. With our small initiative like this, we can help them grow and live a contented life.
7. Community Engagement – “Simple living, high thinking”
One of the best parts about living rurally is exchanging knowledge. You can learn from your host how they spend time. The possibilities of discovering newer ways to explore nature in a more personalized fashion. You get to cook in their style, of course under their guidance though. Also, what they eat, wear, and how they raise their children and farm animals. You can share, talk, communicate and learn about their hardships and happy times in the rural space. You will experience their world as opposed to your everyday metropolis city-like living. When the rural setup is hosting multiple guests, your host can organize some things as simple as a music night or bonfire.
So pack your bags and take a break from the “city-like life” to relish rural living. Switch off the conventional urban mode of tourism to relish a great time with your kids and family so that they don’t lose touch with rural India.

Unemployment in Morocco: A Comprehensive Analysis
Introduction
Unemployment in Morocco remains a significant challenge, impacting individuals, families, and the broader society. This article aims to delve deep into the various facets of unemployment in Morocco, exploring its causes, consequences, and potential solutions.
Understanding Unemployment in Morocco
Definition and Types
Unemployment refers to the situation where individuals who are willing and able to work are unable to find suitable employment opportunities. In Morocco, unemployment manifests in various forms, including structural, cyclical, and frictional unemployment.
Factors Contributing to Unemployment
Economic, Social, and Political Factors
Unemployment in Morocco is influenced by a combination of economic, social, and political factors. Economic instability, lack of foreign investment, inadequate infrastructure, and bureaucratic hurdles hinder job creation. Social challenges such as poverty, inequality, and insufficient access to education exacerbate the issue. Additionally, political instability and governance issues further impede efforts to address unemployment effectively.
Impact of Unemployment on Society
Economic, Social, and Psychological Effects
The repercussions of unemployment extend beyond economic hardship. High unemployment rates strain government resources, lead to increased poverty levels, and hamper economic growth. Socially, unemployment can fuel social unrest, crime rates, and urban migration. Moreover, the psychological toll of unemployment, including stress, depression, and low self-esteem, cannot be understated.
Government Initiatives and Policies
Job Creation Programs and Economic Reforms
The Moroccan government has implemented various initiatives to combat unemployment, including job creation programs, vocational training schemes, and economic reforms aimed at stimulating growth and attracting investment. However, the effectiveness of these policies remains a subject of debate, with critics pointing to persistent challenges such as bureaucratic inefficiencies and corruption.
Education and Unemployment
Role of Education in Tackling Unemployment
Education plays a crucial role in addressing unemployment by equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the labor market. However, the education system in Morocco faces challenges such as outdated curricula, high dropout rates, and a mismatch between graduates' skills and employers' needs. Reforming the education sector to align with the demands of the labor market is essential for reducing unemployment rates.
Youth Unemployment
Challenges and Solutions for Young Jobseekers
Youth unemployment is a pressing issue in Morocco, with young people facing significant barriers to entering the workforce. Limited job opportunities, lack of work experience, and educational deficiencies contribute to youth unemployment. Addressing this issue requires targeted interventions such as vocational training programs, apprenticeships, and support for entrepreneurship.
Regional Disparities
Urban-Rural Divide and Its Implications
Unemployment rates vary significantly between urban and rural areas in Morocco, with urban centers generally experiencing lower unemployment rates than rural regions. Addressing regional disparities in employment opportunities requires targeted investments in infrastructure, education, and economic development projects in rural areas.
Informal Sector Employment
Opportunities and Challenges
The informal sector plays a significant role in Morocco's economy, providing livelihoods for a large segment of the population. However, informal employment often lacks job security, social protections, and access to formal financial services. Formalizing the informal sector while preserving its entrepreneurial spirit is essential for reducing unemployment and improving living standards.
Gender Disparities in Employment
Women in the Workforce and Gender Equality
Gender disparities persist in Morocco's labor market, with women facing unequal access to employment opportunities, wage discrimination, and cultural barriers to workforce participation. Promoting gender equality in the workplace through legislative reforms, educational initiatives, and awareness campaigns is essential for harnessing the full potential of Morocco's workforce.
Vocational Training Programs
Skill Development and Employability
Vocational training programs play a vital role in addressing skills gaps and enhancing employability in Morocco. These programs provide practical training in various trades and industries, equipping participants with the skills needed to secure sustainable employment. However, efforts to expand and improve vocational training programs require increased investment, collaboration with employers, and alignment with industry needs.
Entrepreneurship as a Solution
Encouraging Startups and Small Businesses
Entrepreneurship offers a pathway to employment and economic growth in Morocco. By fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship, including access to financing, mentorship, and regulatory support, the government can empower aspiring entrepreneurs to create their own employment opportunities and contribute to economic development.
International Perspectives
Comparisons with Global Unemployment Trends
Morocco's unemployment challenges are not unique and are part of broader global trends. By comparing Morocco's unemployment situation with that of other countries, policymakers can gain valuable insights into effective strategies and best practices for addressing unemployment. International cooperation and knowledge sharing can play a crucial role in tackling this complex issue.
Future Outlook and Recommendations
Strategies for Reducing Unemployment Rates
In conclusion, addressing unemployment in Morocco requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the underlying economic, social, and political factors driving unemployment. Key recommendations include investing in education and vocational training, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering regional development, and strengthening social safety nets to support vulnerable populations.

claudette's mother's family was from brazil; her family immigrated to canada in 1969, during the influx of Latin Americans (some 68,000) in the early 1970s that can be partly attributed to canada’s “open door” immigration policy at the time. Her grandmother was a practioner of Candomblé before they emigrated to Canada, where mrs. morel felt preassured to conform to a more traditional (i.e. european) christian faith. in contrast, her father's family had lived in canada for decades. consisted of maternal relatives from the west indies (barbados) living in rural nova scotia since the 1910s, and paternal relatives who emigrated from new york (harlem) to montreal in the 1920s.  it offered a diverse upbringing (american family's entrepreneurship and academics; west indies family's deep roots in activism, african traditionalism and their grim history with africaville), and allowed him to genuinely feel as if he was a part of the larger black community in montreal. her parents' respective backgrounds reflected in their earlier parenting styles. mr. morel was typically kind, patient, and engrossed with his child's life because he understood that progeny was vital in community, for as often as he could be a part of it (both parents worked to pay for their apartment's rent). mrs. morel, on the other hand, experienced trauma from bullying and featurism, causing her to be deeply fixated on "fixing" claudette; buying her brushes and dolls and straightening creams, consistently enforcing an (admittedly french/european) feminine aesthetic unto her. mrs. morel was ashamed of her own heritage as an afro-brazillian immigrant and who she was at her core, consequently projecting that onto claudette between 2 and 7 years old, which is a vital developmental process for a child's core personality. the contrasting parenting styles was confusing and anxiety-inducing, especially when they would fearfully argue over claudette's future. They were able to afford a home, 3 meals a day, a fridge; but she barely saw her parents. They would have been considered part of the "working poor" in terms of "class." But she was loved. By her parents, by her community. By her passions. This is the story that must be told; this is the only story she understands. It allowed her to look beyond the status quos and accept herself as an afro-indigenous woman and a nonbinary person simultaneously. For example: she does not like to be referred to as "female" at all, due to the racist, negative connotations implied; white/European slavers referred to enslaved African women as "female" to dehumanize them, and segregate them from their "innocent" white women which was their ideal definition of womanhood under white supremacy. But Claudette's story possibly becomes more nightmarish as she enters the fog. Considering that its canon that the Black Vale cult uses quantum mathematics to lure survivors and killers alike into the fog and its trials, it is possible that her existence was not random; she, like every single victim of the fog, was chosen. by design.

National Small Business Day
National Small Business Day celebrated on May 10. Today, we celebrate the self-employed and those with startups. We appreciate the individuals with big ideas and the drive to make them come true. The United States has always thrived on the idea of entrepreneurship. It’s the land of dreams and opportunity, where anything’s possible. The pursuit of aspirations has taken different forms throughout history. But none have been quite as inspiring as America’s small businesses run by individuals with true grit and heart who willed themselves to succeed. Their stories are encouraging because they represent what all of us could achieve. For over 50 years the U.S. Small Business Administration has also celebrated National Small Business Week.
History of National Small Business Day
Small businesses have been the heart of life and economy in the U.S. since the first settlers arrived. The idea of a self-made man emerged during this time when virtuous was the pioneer who built a home and life for his family despite the odds. Many colonists during this period lived on small farms in far-flung rural areas. With only the wilderness and their farms for sustenance, families had no choice but to be self-sufficient. Many people also made essential items at home.
Since the country was still very young, all businesses were small-scale. Trading in crops and services helped the economy go ‘round. However, the transportation of goods from one point to another took ages. There were also no machines since automation didn’t exist yet and banks, as we know them today, had not been established. Fast forward to the 1800s, and a new America was born. It marked the era of large-scale economic activity and manufacturing. The number of affluent Americans increased, as did the demand for goods. Modern corporations that employed thousands of workers fuelled this booming economy. In this environment, small businesses had trouble keeping up.
The story came full circle in the 20th century when large corporations faced stiff competition from businesses based overseas. America’s small businesses rose to the occasion during this period. As small businesses thrived, so did America’s economy. Many more people began to take an interest in entrepreneurship. Turning an idea into a business was no longer a dream but a viable possibility. Start-ups were born, and venture capital financing took the world by storm.
Today, the U.S. has over 32.5 million small businesses — from mom-and-pop stores to establishments providing jobs to entire towns. America would not be the same without its small businesses.
