Scientists reveal the first unconventional superconductor that can be found in mineral form in nature
Scientists from Ames National Laboratory have identified the first unconventional superconductor with a chemical composition also found in nature. Miassite is one of only four minerals found in nature that act as a superconductor when grown in the lab. The team's investigation of miassite revealed that it is an unconventional superconductor with properties similar to high-temperature superconductors. Their findings, published in Communications Materials, further scientists' understanding of this type of superconductivity, which could lead to more sustainable and economical superconductor-based technology in the future. Superconductivity is when a material can conduct electricity without energy loss. Superconductors have applications including medical MRI machines, power cables, and quantum computers. Conventional superconductors are well understood but have low critical temperatures. The critical temperature is the highest temperature at which a material acts as a superconductor.

The precious metals, such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, in catalytic converters make the vehicle devices attractive to thieves, but University of Central Florida researchers are working to reduce the amount of precious metals needed in them -- down to single atoms -- while still maximizing their effectiveness.
Catalytic converters, which were widely introduced in American vehicles in the 1970s, use precious metals as catalysts to help scrub deadly and harmful chemicals from combustion engine exhaust. As the price of precious metals has continued to rise, so has the number of catalytic converter thefts.
In recent studies appearing in Nature Communications and the Journal of the American Chemical Society, UCF researchers showed that they could, respectively, use atomic platinum to control pollutants and operate the system at lower temperatures, which is crucial to removing harmful chemicals when a vehicle first starts.

Development of new zeolitic catalyst shows the great importance of small dimensions
Dr. Michal Mazur and his colleagues from the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague study catalysts that are based on metal nanoparticles stabilized at zeolites. Recently, they have prepared a new type of zeolitic catalyst. Their results have been published in the journal Angewandte Chemie.
Many chemical processes, such as oxidation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and reforming reactions require the use of heterogeneous catalysts based on transition metals. The price of some of these metals, such as rhodium or platinum, is high; thus, the efficiency of their utilization is a key factor for industrial use. One of the possible solutions is to prepare them in the form of nanoparticles, which allows the exposure and effective use of a larger fraction of metal atoms.
"This situation has many equivalents in regular life. Let's say you want to open a business based on selling coffee in Prague. It is much better to open many small coffee shops in different parts of the city, than only one big shop in the city center. This allows your business to be more accessible to customers, thus efficient," says Dr. Mazur in describing his strategy.
