The next of my childhood favorite books reimagined in my style is Raymond Briggs' "The Snowman". With Briggs' recent passing a few weeks ago, I was saddened because this book was probably the first book I remember as a kid before learning to read. It didn't have any text and was just pictures, I felt like I understood the story without knowing how to read. I also was a huge fan of the animated short as a kid. Thank goodness of PBS, which is the only channel that played it. It was such a fun story about a boy being friends with a Snowman. My favorite (probably everyone's) is the moment the Snowman uses his magic to fly with the kid. Even now both the book and the movie leaves me with that sense of sadness because we also feel like we too lost a friend.

I knew that I was going to do my cover version of this book eventually, but when Brigg's passed away I made this my priority to be next in my childhood book explorations. So here is my favorite moment in the book after the boy and Snowman take off and we see a view of his house as they fly further into the sky.

The Snowman (1982)

Based on the book by Raymond Briggs, The Snowman is enchanting. Seeing it awoke inside me that feeling you get flipping through the pages of a photo album. It makes you nostalgic for long gone, sweeter, innocent days. It's a little sad but there's also a warmth that comes from that longing. The emotions push you to take action by putting on a scarf and mitts, packing up some snowballs, or simply wandering outside in the white landscape of Christmas.

This story of a young boy who discovers that the snowman he's built has come to life is a visual splendor. Rather than using traditional shading techniques, the shapes, shadows, and highlights have been created via crosshatching. This gives The Snowman a distinct look and feel. The way it brings the book to life imitates the way some kind of magic has given the main character’s friend motion. This look, along with the dialogue-free story gives this 1982 special a timeless quality. You'll want to see it every year and pass it down to your children.

A large part of the success of The Snowman comes from the audio. It's just music coordinated to action, but the two fit so well together they become one. It builds to I’m Walking in the Air, a beautifully melancholic, joyous tune that contains the only dialogue in the film. You can never forget its words and melody.

Every December, I gather with friends to watch Christmas movies. We have a few staples but mostly, the lineup changes from year to year to accommodate the various titles we've brought with us. At 27 minutes, The Snowman is a perfect addition. You can slide it between full-length features as we wait for that one straggler or to get the event started on the right foot. It’s a favorite waiting to be discovered. (On DVD, December 17, 2017)

I caught the Raymond Briggs Snowman show at Brighton Museum and was somehow surprised that the artwork looked so perfectly finished with little correction or touching up with the white paint - and pretty much drawn same size. There’s a softness and wistfulness that is more touching in the flesh than the printed version. Great to see Riddell and company pay tribute too (Shirley Hughes also, whom I met at a party at her house in the 1980’s when I did a couple of books for Walker books.) Felt like a trip back in time for me too. Also took time to see the Brighton (history of) room - I’ll need to come back to this for my major project.

“The Snowman”

I haven’t seen this since I was a child. I recently found this again and it brought back some good nostalgic vibes for me. I remember ordering this on video tape through my Book Fair catalogue in elementary school (I loved the book fair). This was on a tape with a bunch of other short movies, cartoons, etc. (which was common back then).

I’m not sure if anyone else remembers this or not, but I always found this to be sweetly poetic. I always thought this was a heart-warming little animated story. Gives me that warm-and-fuzzy feelin’ (very gentle & good) - perfect for the feel-good Christmas vibes.

I’m looking forward to having a Merry Christmas this year! I think all of the people who have been on the Nice list deserve a very nice reward for being so commited to kindness & good faith in 2020. I think we all know who is getting a visit from Krampus this year (with a big ol’ lump of coal - MMMMhmm).

We’ve all been through a lot this year and I believe people will truly appreciate what really matters this year for the holiday season.

I’m not big on materialism & consumerism. I’ve learned how to enjoy the simple things in life in my personal experiences. Whether or not you celebrate Christmas or not - I truly wish all of the good folks who are grounded & pure-at-heart a healthy & happy holiday season this year. Please stay safe this holiday season!
