Only The Brave is the most criminally underrated fic in the fandom. The writing?? The plot??? The range of characters??? @solmussa you made me feel all the feels. Extra points for the Rubik’s cube thing because speedcubing is my favourite hobby and this fic was my multiverse of madness.

honestly im so glad bioware nerfed the cousland origin by not making them as socially & politically powerful as they technically ought to be. bc i think if i had to confront the whole cousland/mac tir situation in canon as opposed to just my own unsalvageable deep fried thoughts i think i would contract some sort of brain eating bacterial infection and die :/
#tay plays dao#oc: elspeth#of COURSE elspeth Knows these people! ofc she knows eamon !and teagan ! she and cailan were friends and maric held her as a baby !!!!!!!#and of COURSE. of COURSE she knows the mac tirs. the only other teyrnir family. inherent allies AND rivals to the kings favor. ok. okokokok#but thinking abt the post occupation solidarity between all of ferelden. bryce and loghain letting their daughters be friends#elspeth and anora being the BEST of friends growing up. each one spending months at highever or gwaren respectively#god. thinking about loghain as a godfather figure to elspeth makes me insane. thinking of anora being a sister to elspeth makes me insaner#the girls later growing up and recognising that the kingdom was beginning to set the two of them up against one another as they + cailan#came of age. realizing one of them would likely be chosen as queen and the other would Not.#and its not so much the jealous/competitiveness that drove them apart but the fear that the other one thought less of them for it#idk. idk idk idk.#i just love making things complicated. i love the idea that when alistair kills loghain its like... 1) elspeth is horrified bc he was at on#point like family to her.#and then 2) grateful ! bc what sort of family would do all of this to her !!!!!!!!!#and then his death also being the final nail in the coffin for anora and elspeth's friendship. H. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH#I CANT. I CANT EVEN THINK OF THIS IM GOING TO GO SOAK MY HEAD OR WHATEVER COUSLAND SAYS TO DAIRREN IDEK.

So some background on this story AU.
In the canon of Heralds of Valdemar Queen Selenay broke years of tradition (and the law) to marry Prince Karathanelan. Per the law the consort to the monarch must be chosen by a companion. Prince Karathanelan was not.
As per the law, the heir must also be chosen. Elspeth almost wasn't chosen.
In the canon of Assassin's Creed (at least in the comics) Desmond has a son with an unknown woman.
So my thought was to combine the two. So this story was born. Elspeth is Desmond's daughter. When he ran away from home he somehow found his way to Valdemar and met a young Selenay. They fell in love with each other. Everyone important in Selenay's life adored Desmond. Just one problem, a check for gifts revealed that he would never get gifts not even the level of trauma the great herald mage Vanyel went through would blast open his gifts. Desmond was roughly eighteen at the time. So the two shared a final night together were, Desmond and Selenay shared an intimate night. A few weeks later Desmond left, sent home by masters of portal spells Jarvis and Heimdall (little Easter eggs thanks to my d&d group.). Desmond lives his life on earth not forgetting that world because he gained a Hertasi. He returned to Valdemar after he sacrificed himself to save earth from burning.

whatever's supposed to happen in season 3 aside, i'm delusional
please enjoy silly ideas about what muriel, crowley, maggie, and nina get up to while aziraphale's gone :)
maggie and nina RUSH to crowley once they find out aziraphale left
both of them know the feeling of rejection and they support him as much as they can
they give him helpful breakup advice and check up on him periodically
over time, the three become good friends
maggie and nina are endlessly curious about the whole heaven/hell/angel/demon/universe thing and crowley answers what questions he can
since crowley's still not bound to hell, the three of them just vibe most of the time
muriel joins them on occasion, when they're not reading a new book
crowley, despite maggie and nina telling him it might be better to keep his distance from the shop for a bit, checks in on muriel and teaches them how to properly take care of the bookshop
as in, don't sell any of the books, don't rearrange any of the books, close and open whenever you want, etc.
occasionally, muriel, maggie, and nina will organize sort of "storytimes" where crowley shares some stories from his past
it starts with the ones without aziraphale. it's still a bit too raw to tell those.
but, eventually, he tells the story of elspeth in edinburgh. or the lost unicorn on noah's arc (which maggie swears she knew were real this whole time)
maggie and nina also teach muriel how to properly blend in with humans
they're not the BEST at it, but they're good enough that they can go get hot cocoa from nina's shop without people staring at them
crowley teaches muriel how to perform miracles. although, angelic miracles are just a bit different than demonic ones. so they both kind of figure it out together
muriel ends up miracling aziraphale's wardrobe to fit them. those are the human clothes they have access to, afterall.
and, besides, the style suits them.
crowley smiles at the look and doesn't comment on it. and nina gives him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
muriel shares the stories they've read with maggie, who listens enthusiastically
nina suggests muriel write a story of their own
regular customers at give me coffee or give me death now recognize the bookshop owner often in the corner pondering a laptop
nina taught them how to use it. crowley whispers to them that if they tell the laptop what to do with a bit of miraculous energy, it's a lot easier
maggie shows muriel some music. it's so much better than the celestial harmonies that they've had to hear for all these years
they end up liking everything they're shown. from aziraphale's old classical records they found in the bookshop to the queen that plays from crowley's car
muriel adores the bentley. and the bentley eventually warms up to them.
crowley takes muriel to see more of earth, once
well, more of england anyway
there's one time during the drive that the queen melts into an unfamiliar song. something about angels and nightingales.
crowley puts a fist to the dash and it switches back to queen before muriel can grasp what it is
while they're far from the city, the stars are much brighter
muriel hasn't had the chance to see them until then
and crowley tells them another story. about nebulas and galaxies and how they're made. and how gorgeous they really are up close.
muriel doesn't understand why crowley gets so sad talking about something he loves
sometimes residents of the street ask where mr. fell went
maggie and nina will respond that maybe you should mind your own business and they're sure he has his reasons
muriel will smile and say that he's gone on to heaven. then get confused when people offer their condolences
crowley doesn't say anything.
ms sandwich can put together that aziraphale and crowley were an item, though.
and she can certainly see that they aren't anymore
eventually, after a few months, maggie and nina start officially dating
muriel happens to be reading some of aziraphale's romance novels, and they find nina and maggie's relationship utterly adorable
if they ever mention as much tho, nina will tell them to piss off while maggie gets flustered
once, muriel asks maggie and nina when they figured out that they had feelings for each other
crowley is around at that time
muriel, excited by maggie and nina's answers turns to crowley and starts to ask him when he realized he was in love with aziraphale. but they trail off
nina had told them that crowley's not great at talking about aziraphale all the time
they have to wait until he brings it up, okay?
muriel apologizes, but crowley waves a hand
he explains the experience of the first rain
and maggie GASPS
"the rain! back when you were trying to get me and nina together! that was YOU."
crowley just offers a half-smirk and a thumbs-up
that's all ive got for now.

As someone who spent several summers with cousins, I can ASSURE YOU that card games are a sensitive subject for Felix, Venetia, and Farleigh.
Someone gets so into it, and then the others join, and suddenly it’s 12+ hours into a session and it’s their 8th game, running tally, they owe thousands to each other but especially fucking Farleigh because that bastard has actually been to Vegas.
It’s an addiction, at this point.
Felix knocks on Venetia’s door at 3AM because he couldn’t sleep, and just goes “Vee, verse me in War.”
Felix definitely ends up with a black eye from one of the others after being caught (poorly) cheating.
Them stockpiling food, putting on a show or movie, and just going for hours, eyes red, paper cuts galore, grudges festering. Hiding under a table or holed up in a distant room.
Felix can do a basic shuffle and bridge, Farleigh knows a lot of showy techniques for seduction purposes, and Venetia keeps accidentally throwing the cards, somehow. 52 pickup QUEEN.
They tried to bring the adults in, once, for a poker game, but Elspeth was soon banned for her incredible poker face, and Duncan for his card counting.

HEADCANONS TIMEEEE pt.2 (some nsfw, obviously mostly Felix)
⋆。°✩
• Felix has a septum. Farleigh and Felix got piercings together. But Farleigh doesn't use them.
• Felix got his piercings because Elspeth told him not to. Felix has something against the rules, if you tell him to do something he will do exactly the opposite
• Felix is very lazy at sex most of the time, mostly cause he's not very interested on the person on his bed, he just want numb his feelings with it, unless he was in a very good mood that day. He doesn't care cause he know people wouldn't say a thing about it. He only put effort on it when he actually like the person(it not happend much)
• Felix and Oliver usually spend a lot of time alone in Saltburn Gardens, just the two of them being happy and in love, they even do cheesy things like making flower crowns for each other.
• When Félix is very stressed he usually pulls out his hair.
• Farleigh, Venetia and Felix have special friendship bracelets
• Felix has a blood cock, Oliver has a flesh cock. When Felix is soft he's about Ollie's size(I'm a monster cock Felix believer, also Ollie is such a size queen)
• Felix write a diary, when he was a kid he never has no one who talk to about his feelings, his family always rejected any "negative" emotions (they even rejected when "positive" emotions were too much) so he started writing down everything he felt.
• After a year of relationship trying everything in bed, Cattonquick became super vanilla
• When Venetia and Felix were children and they used to cry, Elspeth usually ignored them. The servants left them in some empty room to "calm down". When Venetia grow up(I headcanon her as five years older than Felix) She did what she could to calm Felix down and prevent him from being scolded.

Summer of Like // Farleigh Start x OC (32)
On the eleventh anniversary of Venetia’s death, I find myself back in England, with Saltburn in the distance.
The wind rips through my hair, but if anything, I’m grateful - it’s the only source of relief from the oppressing heat of the August sun beating down on me. The pros and cons of renting a convertible - no roof, no air conditioning. Farleigh sits in the passenger seat, a cigarette perched between his fingers as he rests his elbow on the door. He smiles when he catches my glance.
I refocus on the road ahead of us. The leather of the steering wheel is hot, and burns a bit when I shift my hands. The glint of the wedding band on my ring finger - still shiny and new - catches my eye for a moment, and a rush of giddiness fills me. Since the wedding, every time I’ve looked at it, I can’t help but smile - even though we’ve been living like we’re married for years.
It doesn’t feel like it’s been eleven years since Farleigh and I met. I can still remember the summer of 2007 like it was yesterday. Endless days by the lake, just lounging about in the grass, talking about everything and nothing all at once. That night we smoked on the roof. All the nights he would slip into my room to complain about Oliver. The first time we kissed - the first time we fucked. How things had taken a turn for the worse the very next day. I don’t think I’ve ever cried as much as I did that summer.
It doesn’t feel like it’s been eleven years - but at the same time it does. All the dots that connect us from then to now are lined up perfectly in my head. It started out rough - juggling my last year at NYU and teaching Farleigh how to be a normal person was hard, not to mention the part-time job I was working on top of it all. But after he’d gotten used to working, and started fiddling around with social media things had gotten easier. By the time I’d graduated, he was pretty much self-sufficient.
Since then, New York has swept the both of us up into her madness. For Farleigh, his social media presence lifted him back up into a social status he was familiar with, hanging out with nepo-babies and fallen-off child actors in the VIP sections of New York's hottest clubs. For a while, he was something of a club queen until he started leaning more into fashion, posting styling tips, high end hauls and purchasing that first sewing machine. God, that thing was loud. I don’t miss it - the one he has now is so much quieter. Fashion blogging turned into being invited to runway events to designing to having his collection featured in Vogue’s last issue. Now, he’s in high demand to style celebrities for red carpets.
I’m happy for him - really. It’s obvious that he loves his work, even if it does mean that our house is covered in fabric scraps. And that I have to go with him to fashion events - not really my scene, but it is fun to see pictures of us on E!News.
For me, it’s been objectively less exciting - but I wasn’t trying to climb my way back up the social ladder. Once I was done with NYU and had my journalism degree, it was tabloid work for a while - reporting on who Taylor Swift was dating or who Ariana Grande had been spotted with that week - until I had woven myself into the industry enough that I could network my way into a more respectable news source. I wrote for the New Yorker for a while, and then The New York Times, and now Time magazine itself. It’s a lot of traveling, but since Farleigh doesn’t work a regular 9-5 he can usually come with me (unless there’s some event), and he likes to. It ‘expands his horizons’ and ‘inspires him to create’ supposedly. I think he just doesn’t want to be home alone.
In all my traveling, I never thought I’d end up back here.
Saltburn glitters in the distance, the winding road leading up to the gates, growing ever closer as we cruise along. When we’d gotten the news that James was sick, I’d reached back out to Elspeth, sending well wishes from the both of us. On a whim, we’d sent them a wedding invitation too. I didn’t really expect anything to come from it - Farleigh was adamant that they would just ignore it, considering how things ended between them. And for a while, it had seemed like he was right - until a handwritten letter from Elspeth had showed up in our mailbox.
It was long winded - of course, it was from Elspeth - and apologetic, explaining how she couldn’t make the wedding because James had died, but insisting that we come back to Saltburn for our honeymoon. Something about it being where we met made her adamant there was no better place to spend the first couple of weeks as a married couple.
After talking it over, we decided to take her up on her offer.
Which is how we’re here, now, gliding down the road to Saltburn in a convertible, Iconapop’s I Love It blasting through the speakers. It feels like being twenty again - the summer sun beating down on my skin, the smell of cigarette smoke trailing from Farleigh’s fingertips, my hair fluttering out behind me as I drive too fast on purpose. I glance over at him - my husband - for a second, catching a glimpse of the way the sun paints him in luxurious gold. He’s gorgeous. He’s always been gorgeous.
Again he catches me looking. “You’re supposed to be driving.” He shouts over the wind and the music.
“I am!” I say. “It was two seconds-”
“Eyes on the road!” He ignores my protests, pointing his cigarette at me threateningly.
I roll my eyes. “Maybe if you were less distracting it wouldn’t be a problem.” I joke. “Stop being so pretty.”
“I couldn’t even if I tried, Eves.” He says, leaning over the center console to smack a kiss to the side of my forehead. Taking one hand off the wheel, I hold out two fingers for his cigarette. He places it between them, and I take a drag before handing it back to him.
God, it feels like being twenty again.
I miss her.

It had been six thousand years, but she’d only had around a hundred bodies and identities. It wasn’t hard in the beginning, humans didn’t bother to write things down or record people they’d been living with, so whenever they started suspecting something she just moved. Then humans started to bother with those things. They did change a couple times, sometimes to blend in, sometimes to have more freedom, sometimes to see what her “old lot” had been up to.
But it wasn’t really hard until the witch hunts.
Village women started to notice that she didn’t age. They told their husbands that she was a witch; it wasn’t hard to believe, she had red hair and collected herbs, not for potions, simply because she liked the smell. Although she did help a boy who had flu, when they lived in Rome their friend taught them how to make herbal tea which helped. They burned her at the stake, they burned their God alive in the name of said god. Then there was a thought in their head: “Maybe I’m not the god they worship, anymore? Maybe he’s the one they call god..” She didn’t have any thoughts anymore, not until she appeared seven years later on the doorstep of a nunnery.
During their time on earth they left many of their signs, but every life she lived, she made sure to place more. She didn’t know how many those “representatives” found. They didn’t want to know.
Nunnery was nice, they hid there for almost a century. It was easy, she just made everyone believe that she was a new person, every couple of decades, and her “old self” would be quickly forgotten. But one nun didn’t forget. She wasn’t a sister, her status was Mother. Mother Antonia, that’s what they called her. They noticed that Mother was watching them, her eyes were almost saying: “ I know what you are, I know that all of you are one.” They left “Chattering Order of St. Berrill” at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Mother Antonia was the one to see them off, her eyes passed the view and focused on them, at least that was what they felt, they never really saw her face, they always assumed that she didn’t have any eyes and that was why she wore a veil. Too tall for a woman from that time, too weird to still be alive and not burning on the stake as a witch. She didn’t seem to be in place then.
When she said her goodbyes to sisters and was almost at the bottom of the stairs, Mother called her. Sisters were back inside, but she was standing at the top of the stairs, her veil thrown back, red hair sticking out a little from under the headwear, her eyes - bright yellow, with vertical pupils - staring right at them. Those eyes they remembered for a long time, those eyes that said “I knew you wouldn’t do that, I knew he wasn’t you. I know who you are, Almighty.”
They didn’t see that angel for so long, they were at fault for what happened.
It was just one identity for a hundred years. They decided to change it not long until the French Revolution. The angel was again there, but he didn’t recognize them this time. They stole bread from some man that went to look at the Queen's death. Then the angel vanished.
It was 1827 if they remember it correctly. It was one of the times when they really became their identity. Elspeth was poor young lady who lived in Edinburg. They met wee Morag in 1824, she was a window, with no children, so she had no right for her late husband’s money. They didn’t make many friends through their life, but wee Morag was different, she was more than a friend. Last they had friends in the nunnery, almost two hundred years ago, so they’ve decided to give that a chance. They figured that if they would find a corpse she could get some money. That’s when they run into both of them. The last time she’d seen them together was in Rome, never since. But now both “representatives” were here.
One of them volunteered to help her with the body, other one started telling him how wrong it was. They wanted to punch him, but you can’t hit an angel, can you?
Later they couldn't remember much about what happened after. Or at least do it clearly.
It was rage that filled her up. It was a perfectly fine body until that "representative" got in the way. Now it was ruined, useless.
And after that those two had the audacity to show up and tell her that they would help her?! They didn’t want to agree, they did it for Morag, but maybe it was best if they didn’t.
Then they shut down, they had no thoughts, no ideas, no emotions, just memories and pain where their heart would have been. She wanted to destroy this place, destroy them. Erase those two from existence and never look back. But they couldn’t, those desires were buried deep inside their mind. They were like a puppet whose strings were cut. Elspeth didn’t feel that way. She knew what to do, so they let her do it.
They made themselves take control back only when they realized that one of the “representatives” was trying to drink the poison.
“Why it was even there?”
They couldn’t remember. It was probably something Elspeth was planning.
She tried to stop him. They didn’t know why, but maybe it was guilt? Guilt for the things they’ve messed up, for lives they’ve ruined.
They shut down again when something in their brain said that poison isn’t lethal for eternal beings. Elspeth was in charge again, she didn’t need to worry any more.
The next thing they remember? She was gasping for air between a couple of gravestones, pain felling up her chest.
People turn to god when their loved ones die, they beg god for help. But who should God turn to? Who should they beg?
Wee Morag died, they had money now but that wasn’t something they wanted, they wanted to have peace for at least a lifetime, with Morag. They wanted to run from that life. But it was hard, hard to leave it all behind.
On the money she got from angel “representative,” she bought land, a lot of it, and a couple decades later opened an orphanage. They got rid of the body they had before and pretended to be an orphan. There was an epidemic of tuberculosis during the 1870s, she got affected.
The doctor headmistress called appeared to be one of the representatives. That body, that identity died then. and that was the last time they'd seen either of them for quite some time.
They’ve spent the entire 20th century in America and France, they appeared as an actress, an activist, an artist, college student, and a backer once. That century was one when they had the most identities, yes some of them were combined, but it was still much more than they had before. Maybe that was why “representatives” couldn’t find her. Eventually they started to restore the body they had in Rome, she was a priestess back then, and had some knowledge about how to avoid the spirits. The thing that proved to be useful was “evil eye” a little peace of jewelry that they carried around. They got panicked when “representatives” appeared there, so they covered their arms and upper back with those symbols. There were other ones that could’ve helped her, like the one they learned even before the flood, people they’ve lived with back them showed her symbols that were supposed to hide them from the Metatron, and let them speak to God directly. She’d made a couple of those too.
By the beginning of the 21st century, they were again guarded by their tattoos and jewelry. They changed their body a bit to appear younger and returned to London.
They had money but got bored of doing nothing eventually, so she got a job in a local café.
Nina was a nice boss, they became friends in no time, then they befriended Maggie. But she still couldn’t bring herself to talk with that “representative” who lived across the street.
One day, a naked man appeared right in front of the bookshop, then a couple other people. They weren’t people, of course, they were angels and a few demons.
It seemed normal until He appeared, then it all went nuts.

Talkingpoints 2 what he has to say on girls, women and relationships.
Now we pretty much guessed that there wouldn't be much he would share on the subject and he hasn't gone into any great detail.
His first kiss was with a girl called Alice aged 10 who was his childhood friend, she was outdoorsy like him and he felt comfortable in her company. The kiss was part of a game Sleeping Beauty and the Prince, a King and his Queen then they just went back to being friends.
As he started to have feelings about girls he didn't have much confidence in himself, he stood out for being tall, wore thick glasses, was slightly chubby and was very sensitive. He preferred to stay on the fringes in class and would hold back with friends.
When the family moved to Edinburgh he attended the James Gillespie's school for one year his Mum suggested a move to a Steiner education so he could develop his creative side. He wore jeans and a tie-dyed t-shirt as he thought it looked cool and hoped he would fit in with the creative types, he wanted to impress the girls as he thought they were smart, gifted and grown up. He doesn't mention any girlfriends while at school or the failed date at McDonalds, Wimpy, Burger King etc
In the first year of his gap year he travelled to Europe with four friends with the prospect of meeting local girls and drinking beer again doesn't go into detail.
The second year he joined the Royal Lyceum Youth Theatre and was infatuated with a girl called Emma, he would arrive early and stay behind to catch her eye but doesn't say if anything happened.
When he attended the Royal Scottish Academy as it was known then he moved in with a male student and two female students Helen and Flortjee. He said like all first years they got high and wandered the streets looking for the best Sunday roasts and went clubbing. No mention of any girlfriends.
There's a picture of him with the actress Elspeth Brodie when they starred in the theatre production of The Pearlfisher he said she beautifully captured the audience and his heart on and off the stage, he mentions an ex girlfriend of his who lived in Richard Maddens Glasgow apartment and confirmed her picture was in the book.
Whilst in London he dated someone for a while who was in his words a smart and ambitious production assistant at Working Title Films, they moved in together but it only lasted a week as they were not compatible in any way.
He's content in his own company but does look for love and companionship and has invested in several meaningful relationships giving 100% commitment and adores the romance, however, when it starts to feel perfect he starts to question can he sustain a relationship for 2, 5 or 10 years. Work makes it hard for him to settle down so doesn't want someone to commit when he can't return it so he moves on. There's no doubt his Father leaving the family has had a huge effect on him, as he said his Father created a family then removed himself from it and he doesn't want to be in the same position. When things look too perfect he bails it's a protective mechanism as he doesn't want to cause hurt to himself or others. The walk obviously gave him time to think so he says the next time he falls in love he should just enjoy the moment and not think ahead as he recognises he's undermining his chances of finding someone special.
He doesn't let people into his life with ease and trust takes time for him to establish, he has very few super close friends again probably because of his Father leaving when he was young, he simply enjoys his own company and craves it.
After the walk he returned home and savoured the stillness, he now sees his house as somewhere he could settle in for a long time to come, a family home perhaps but adds whatever that might mean.
Looking forward to your comments and thoughts on this and if I've left anything out maybe other bloggers who've read the book could fill in any of the gaps.
