The Proverbs of Solomon
1 The wise sayings of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel. 2 To have knowledge of wise teaching; to be clear about the words of reason: 3 To be trained in the ways of wisdom, in righteousness and judging truly and straight behaviour: 4 To make the simple-minded sharp, and to give the young man knowledge, and serious purpose: 5 (The wise man, hearing, will get greater learning, and the acts of the man of good sense will be wisely guided:) 6 To get the sense of wise sayings and secrets, and of the words of the wise and their dark sayings. 7 The fear of the Lord is the start of knowledge: but the foolish have no use for wisdom and teaching.
Advice to a Son
8 My son, give ear to the training of your father, and do not give up the teaching of your mother: 9 For they will be a crown of grace for your head, and chain-ornaments about your neck. 10 My son, if sinners would take you out of the right way, do not go with them. 11 If they say, Come with us; let us make designs against the good, waiting secretly for the upright, without cause; 12 Let us overcome them living, like the underworld, and in their strength, as those who go down to death; 13 Goods of great price will be ours, our houses will be full of wealth; 14 Take your chance with us, and we will all have one money-bag: 15 My son, do not go with them; keep your feet from their ways: 16 For their feet are running after evil, and they are quick to take a man's life. 17 Truly, to no purpose is the net stretched out before the eyes of the bird: 18 And they are secretly waiting for their blood and making ready destruction for themselves. 19 Such is the fate of everyone who goes in search of profit; it takes away the life of its owners.
The Good Woman—Wisdom
20 Wisdom is crying out in the street; her voice is loud in the open places; 21 Her words are sounding in the meeting-places, and in the doorways of the town: 22 How long, you simple ones, will foolish things be dear to you? and pride a delight to the haters of authority? how long will the foolish go on hating knowledge? 23 Be turned again by my sharp words: see, I will send the flow of my spirit on you, and make my words clear to you. 24 Because your ears were shut to my voice; no one gave attention to my out-stretched hand; 25 You were not controlled by my guiding, and would have nothing to do with my sharp words: 26 So in the day of your trouble I will be laughing; I will make sport of your fear; 27 When your fear comes on you like a storm, and your trouble like a rushing wind; when pain and sorrow come on you. 28 Then I will give no answer to their cries; searching for me early, they will not see me: 29 For they were haters of knowledge, and did not give their hearts to the fear of the Lord: 30 They had no desire for my teaching, and my words of protest were as nothing to them. 31 So the fruit of their way will be their food, and with the designs of their hearts they will be made full. 32 For the turning back of the simple from teaching will be the cause of their death, and the peace of the foolish will be their destruction. 33 But whoever gives ear to me will take his rest safely, living in peace without fear of evil. — Proverbs 1 | Bible in Basic English (BBE) The Bible in Basic English is in the public domain. Consider the Source
1 “Surely there is a mine for silver,     and a place for gold that they refine. 2 Iron is taken out of the earth,     and copper is smelted from the ore. 3 Man puts an end to darkness     and searches out to the farthest limit     the ore in gloom and deep darkness. 4 He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives;     they are forgotten by travelers;     they hang in the air, far…

How to listen so people will talk-a book review
Are you more concerned about talking, so people will listen to you? Or listening, so people will talk to you? This book explains the difference and how to do it.
How to Listen So People Will Talk: Build Stronger Communication and Deeper Connections By Becky Harling Published in 2017 by Bethany House Publishers I’m embarrassed to admit when I searched for this book online I typed into my browser, How to Talk so People will Listen. And it turns out, there is a book by that title. But my faux pa illustrates why this book needed to be written:most of us…

PROVERBS S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 1
Monday, 2/13/23
Stepping back into the Old Testament here, if that's alright, though I know we worked through this late last summer...
SCRIPTURE:
"Their [Proverbs] purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair."   ~ Proverbs 1:3
OBSERVATION:
I am never too old to be:
Taught
Disciplined
Successful
Helped
Every day...
APPLICATION:
Or to do:
What is right
What is just
What is fair
Every day...
PRAYER:
All wise and knowing Father God - I ask forgiveness for following my sinful nature in response to the actions of those around me, as well as to the stiff-necked within me... for not listening to Your Spirit as He speaks Your truth into my life, and losing Your peace in exchange for fear... may I, like Jesus, tell the enemy to get behind me, and keep my back turned to my selfish disobedience... May my will become Your will in me... In Jesus's Name, and for Your eternal glory...

Yours - in Him...

Teach an Eddie to math, he'll have a panic attack while suit shopping, and break up with you in his kitchen after you bake muffins with his kid.
Do the math for Eddie, he'll put on his best suit to take you to poker night, and send his kid to your house to bake cookies (& eat steak).

Don't Be a Fool (Proverbs 1:20-33)
"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool." William Shakespeare,
Wisdom shouts in the street;    in the public square she raises her voice.Above the noisy crowd, she calls out.    At the entrances of the city gates, she has her say:“How long will you clueless people love your naïveté,    mockers hold their mocking dear,    and fools hate knowledge? You should respond when I correct you.    Look, I’ll pour out my spirit on you.    I’ll reveal my words to you.I…

“You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.” —2 Chronicles 20:17 (NIV)
“It’s discouraging to feel depleted and think, This was not supposed to be my story. Whether it’s the doctor’s report we never thought we would receive, the ending of a relationship we thought would last forever, or maybe the job we worked so hard for that is not turning out the way we expected, we often cannot escape the wars we feel raging in and around us. Yet we wish we could hide rather than face them.
Thankfully, God gave us the beautiful story of King Jehoshaphat that can help teach us how to deal with our problems His way.
In 2 Chronicles 20, we meet Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. He had just received word that a vast army was coming to destroy him and his people.
Jehoshaphat pleaded to the Lord: “For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (2 Chronicles 20:12b, NIV).
God’s gentle response settled the king’s anxious heart: “You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you” (2 Chronicles 20:17).
God cares about our safety and well-being, and often He does provide a way of escape from danger; in this story, though, God called the king to face his problem with praise. And as he began to sing of God's glory, the enemy began to fall (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).
God didn’t tell Jehoshaphat to fight his problem, and He didn’t tell him to flee; He told him to face it with God by his side. The king faced his impossible situation and responded with praise before he even knew the outcome.
In moments where you find yourself in a seemingly impossible situation and you’re not sure whether to fight, flee or face it, you can invite God into that space too. Even if all you have left is a whisper, whisper His name.
One simple decision helped me face the battle with my job: I decided to start listening to worship music on my way to work in the morning. Not just as background music — I would sing out loud with the words. You don’t have to have a perfect voice to praise. Praise is a posture, not a performance. The choice to face each day with praise gave me the reminder that God was in the car with me and would walk into work with me every single day. This sounds easier said than done, but as we acknowledge His presence, we then notice His power. Our battle cry is the name of Jesus.
As we begin to sing, we can trust that God has already begun His work. By the time we get to the edge of our battlefield, we will see the Lord has already won.
Father, give me the strength to face this day with praise. Help me to remember this battle is not mine but Yours. Help me to keep my eyes on You through every situation I face. I praise You, Father, for Your goodness. Thank You for defeating all my enemies. Thank You for keeping me safe. Thank You for loving me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.”

Ignore at Your Own Peril
Ignore at Your Own Peril
20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street,     in the markets she raises her voice; 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;     at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing     and fools hate knowledge? 23 If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;     I will…
