reposting my twitter thrifting stuff because the site's gone down the shitter. here's stuff from April 17th 2023. as a start, Paul Galdone's adaptation of Puss in Boots from 1976.

Galdone's art is so charming and Puss looks like any ol' tuxedo cat, it's very endearing.

another interesting book that is very Finnish in nature is Suomen kansan peikkosatuja (freely translated as "Finnish people's troll fairy tales") with illustrations by Erkki Tuomi, published in 1979. (I could imagine these stories to be even older since based on Tuomi's signature the art is from 1947!)

I like how in these illustrations the titular troll just looks like a big, kind of dim-witted guy. I imagine there's also versions where the hero takes on a giant, again, with the same premise.

generally the theme of these kinds of fairy tales is that the intrepid hero beats the brawny troll with his wits alone. the weak but clever defeating the strong but cocky.

but heck these illustrations are charming.
