Day 18 - The Mistress of the Copper Mountain
"And she herself, she jumped up and took hold of the rock with her hands, then she skipped on to it and started running about on all fours like a lizard. And instead of hands and feet she had little green paws and a tail came out and there was a black stripe that went half way down the back, but the head was still a maid's."
(P.P. Bazhov "The Mistress of the Copper Mountain")

Writing Legend and Folklore
Unlike mythology, legends are more rooted in historical events and may even have recorded, proven details. Your legend will likely feature real humans as characters experiencing something that happened in a real place in your world. The fun things about legends is that often the truth of the past has been twisted and changed over time. While it’s important for you as the writer to know the absolute truth about your history, your characters may never learn the truth behind the legend, or may trade slightly different alternate stories.
Legends reflect the values or fears of a society. Much of Folklore comes from parents intending to shield their children from danger—whether going out at night and getting snatched by the boogeyman, or wandering too close to the rapids and being dragged in by a dangerous Kelpie. So start with a real value or danger, and begin to embellish.
Maybe in your world society really values compassion. A tale may start out with someone hoarding resources and ignoring those in need which then manifests a shadow monster that gobbles both them and their riches right up! Name the monster, and you have a campfire-worthy folk tale for your characters to tell late into the night.
Or, if your legend has no moral or lesson, it may feature something unexplainable that happened to real people. Stories you hear of disappearing cities or villages come from this place—people witnessing something or experiencing something they can’t explain, and creating a story to explain it anyway.
The original teller of this story, or the original source, should be difficult if not impossible to track down, to make sure it remains shrouded in mystery.
Does your world feature any legends or folktales? Let me know!

Would you still love me if I was a A large serpentine creature born to mortal parents who didn’t listen to the advice of a old crone and thus borne me (Cool & reptilian) and my younger brother (normal & boring), and I disappeared to woods after my birth only to return when my brother is about to get married so I can throw a hissy fit because I wasn’t married first, but each and every time my parents found me a spouse I ate them and after the third or second time of eating them they decided they couldn’t give me another noble /or royal spouse so they went to your father (a shepherd) and arranged our marriage, and you go to the woods and met a old crone (the same crone my mother spoke to) and you tell her about our engagement and how I ate my last two fiancées and you think I’ll eat you too (this is absolutely 100% true) and she gives you a list of things to do for our wedding night and we get married and your wearing all of your clothes at the same time and this begins a really long strip tease where each time you take off a article of clothing I have to shed my snakeskin and once you finally take off all your clothes you take out the whip you soaked in lye and whip me, put me in a bath full of milk, and then put me to bed, so when they find us in the morning we are both alive and I’m no longer a man eating snake
Would you still love me then??

To understand mythologies, myths, folklores, folk tales, you kind of have to try to look at them through the eyes of those who lived and breathed during the eras when they were written, in the places where they were told and retold and passed down the generations.
You kind of have to learn how people lived and worked back then and where they were, how societies were structured and maintained, how cultures were made and kept, how things were in those time periods and how they impacted and influenced folks' ways of living and thinking.
If you only ever see them through a 21st century first world lens, I guarantee you, it just ain't gonna work.

As you may have heard, we're hard at work preparing for the crowdfunding launch of Little Wolves, a folk-tale TTRPG about shapeshifter werewolves in The Enchanted Forest.
With the project launching on May 14th, our focus has been on creating a playable free demo and getting some awesome art done.
And speaking of that awesome art, here's a work-in-progress peek at a piece depicting all four of the fae queens by the wonderful Grendel Menz!
The Queens & Courts of The Forest
Tumblr media
A WIP piece of art by @grendel-menz depicting the four queens.
The Enchanted Forest is home to the fae courts, with 4 of them being the focus in Little Wolves. Lead by their communities and named for their queens, the courts of the Witch, Pumpkin, Troll and Mermaid each tend to The Forest in their own way, and have found harmony among each other and their respective elements of Wind, Fire, Earth and Water.
Each character has ties to one of these courts that affect the elements they’re strong and weak in, and each court and element grants a different kind of Mark when you perform favors or overcome Elemental Trials.
Grendel’s depictions of the 4 queens are phenomenal, and soon enough we’ll be telling you more about each of the individual courts, their queens, and the many denizens you’ll meet on your adventures!
For now, we'll leave you with a look at two of the work-in-progress designs of the four queens themselves! If we hit our "more art" stretch goal, Grendel will be doing full-page pieces of each queen to be paired with their bio and information about their court!
Tumblr media
Selene the Witch Queen and Nayeli the Mermaid Queen.
That's all about the Queens and Courts for now~
In the coming weeks, we'll be talking more about the courts, the elements, and every other aspect of Little Wolves leading up to the crowdfunding launch on May 14th. Stay tuned, and follow the project for more!
Want to see Little Wolves in action?
Nevyn will be running a session of Little Wolves on the Plus One EXP Twitch channel tomorrow night, February 28th, starting at 7pm central! Be there, and be ready to howl~
Click here to learn more & follow the project on BackerKit!

Another superstition: don’t trust the fields
Tumblr media
This is something my uncle would say all the time. He loved by a huge field and strange things happened in it.
You’d see shadows and lights dancing about
Hear a voice call your name
And that doesn’t mention the odd almost fae like looking boy that couldn’t cross my uncles gate that told me and my sister as children that he lived in the field..
These are some of the things my uncle and many of my other family that lived near fields or even owned a field would say:
“ Don’t trust the fields..”
“ when the field is still something bad is about to happen “
“ if the field goes quiet run, there is something in the field with you “
“ if you see lights in the field never go towards them, they’re no good.”
“ never trust anyone that comes out of the field.. they aren’t…..it’s hard to explain but they aren’t what you think they are. “
“ if you hear someone call your name from the field do not answer just run home please.”
“ don’t look into the field at night or in the longest twilight “
“ there are THINGS living in the fields and if you aren’t careful they’ll take you with em”
“ if you ever feel something is off run back home, get passed the gate. You’ll be safe then.”
“ the shit in the fields is why I put jars in the yard “
“ I’d rather you not go into the field at all, I know you’ll try, I know I can’t stop you but please don’t go into the fields without me there or watching..”
