INSTANCIA
No dejes que me duerma pronto,
o si me voy a dormir temprano,
ven a despertarme. A la hora que sea
de la noche. Ven silbando por la carretera.
Patulla en el porche. Aporrea la puerta.
Hazme salir de la cama y bajar
a abrirte y prender una luz.
Dime que salió la aurora boreal,
dime que mire. O di que las nubes
están haciéndole algo a la luna
que nunca he visto, y muéstramelo.
Mira que miro. Habla conmigo hasta
que esté yo tan desvelado como tú
y empiece a vestirme preguntándome
por qué siquiera llegué a acostarme.
Dime que hace noche para estar fuera.
No sólo me lo digas, convénceme.
Sabes que no cuesta convencerme.
*
SUMMONS
Keep me from going to sleep too soon
Or if I go to sleep too soon
Come wake me up. Come any hour
Of night. Come whistling up the road.
Stomp on the porch. Bang on the door.
Make me get out of bed and come
And let you in and light a light.
Tell me the northern lights are on
And make me look. Or tell me clouds
Are doing something to the moon
They never did before, and show me.
See that I see. Talk to me till
Tm half as wide awake as you
And start to dress wondering why
I ever went to bed at all.
Tell me the walking is superb.
Not only tell me but persuade me.
You know Tm not too hard persuaded.

DOS VOCES
¿Qué puedo darte? Soy el inasible
mar añil vagabundo. Yo doy música
no amor, frías y atroces intemperies
Calla. Eres hermoso; sólo escucho
rumorar el verano en la ribera.
¿Qué puedo darte? Soy el árbol grande,
verde penumbra de olvidados sueños.
Libro sólo el saludo de una hoja;
Quieto... del viento el amagar no escucho;
Ido soy,
¿qué es lo que tienes? Sombra sin sustancia.
Mas yo te amo, sombra.
Libérame. Soy muerte.
*
TWO VOICES
What can I give you? I am the unseizable
indigo and wandering sea. I give
no love but music, cold and terrible airs
to darken on your heart as albatross
obscures the gleaming water with a wing.
Be silent. You are beautiful; I hear
only the summer whisper on the shore.
What can I give you? I am that great tree,
the green penumbra of forgotten dreams.
I send a leaf to greet you, but no more;
my branches rustle in the wind of death.
Be still; I hear no menace in the wind;
the tree is mine, and grows about my heart.
I am the wind. I hold you. Iam gone,
shade of no substance. What is it you hold?
Shadow, I love you.
Free me. I am death.

A LA MUERTE
Entra con gala. Que tu imagen porte
fantástico brocado, y desempéñate
con la soberbia y rumbo del actor.
Tu ansiosa novia, la alevilla que arde
sobre tus labios, trae a tu foscura
rútilas arras de deseo y sueños.
Las hojas leves en la onusta rama
que vivas torna cada viento vivo,
relente, flores, fruto, amarga albura,
sabor del mar, y todo don sensible
recibirás, cual cumple al sacramento;
altilocuente, justo y fuerte adorna
*
TO DEATH
Enter with riches. Let your image wear
brocade of fantasy, and bear your part
with all the actor’s art and arrogance.
Your eager bride, the flickering moth that burns
upon your mouth, brings to your dark reserve
a glittering dowry of desire and dreams.
These leaves of lightness and these weighty boughs
that move alive to every living wind,
dews, flowers, fruit, and bitter rind of life,
the savour of the sea, all sentient gifts
you will receive, deserve due ritual;
eloquent, just, and mighty one, adorn
your look at last with sorrow and with fire.
Enter with riches, enviable prince.

ANTES
Azul y verde era el mar
antes que lo viera nadie.
El aguaje susurraba
antes que lo oyera nadie.
Y olas pulsaban la playa
antes de pensarse un antes.

BEFORE
The sea was blue, the sea was green
Before the sea was ever seen.
Surf muttered its liquid word
Before the surf was ever heard.
And waves made time against the shore
Before mind thought its first Before.

a levante y debajo, a aquella cámara
bajo el quinqué tiznado de la luna;

APPLE-HELL
Apples, bright on the leafless bough,
In the high noon sun, with the sky above you,
Time will turn. For the white sky falls
And long, red shadows soon will shove you
Eastward, downward, into the room
Where the moon hangs low like a smoking lamp;
Walls lean in; and the studded ceiling
Shines no more; and the bins grow damp.
Apples, yellow on the naked limb,
Although you burn till the air be gold,
Time is tarnish. Skies are falling,
Noon is dead, and the day grows old.

LA MANZANA
Su piel también se arruga de vieja,
la carne aún dulce, si menos oronda,
y uno la come sin más
del frutero
donde estaba junto
a otra fruta arrugada.
Es lo que pediría la manzana
si pudiera hablar: ser gozada…
y uno la chasca y goza
mientras cacho a cacho desaparece
ruidosamente en nuestra boca,
pletórica.
*
THE APPLE
The skin also wrinkles in old age,
the meat still sweet, if less plump,
and one eats it casually
out of the bowl
where it had been sitting
with other wrinkled fruit.
It’s what the apple would want
if it could speak—to be enjoyed—
and one chews and enjoys
while chunk by chunk it vanishes
into the eater’s mouth noisily
and is fulfilled.

LA HIGUERA
Allá en el campo, en el huerto,
mis mañanas pasaban bajo la higuera
de lato follaje, fosca, salpicada
de negros frutos. Me escondía en la espesura
del gran árbol amigo. El sol
repinaba alto, más alto que la higuera,
que yo bajo la higuera.
Miraba el mundo, la huerta del vecino,
allende el muro. De vez en cuando cortaba
un fruto, que estilaba leche
del pezón quebrado y sangre densa
de la llaga debajo.
Era yo un pequeño Pan, grácil, enclenque,
en el primer abrotoñar tímido de los sentidos;
rey del mundo, del huerto;
único viviente de la tierra
mi entera mañana de verano.
*
IL FICO
Laggiù al paese, nell'orto,
i miei mattini erano sul fico
largo di foglie, bruno, chiazzato
di neri frutti. Mi nascondevo nel folto
del grande albero amico. Il sole
montava alto, più alto del fico,
di me sul fico.
Guardavo il mondo, l'orto del vicino,
di là dal muro. Ogni tanto coglievo
un frutto, che gemeva latte
dal picciuolo spezzato e sangue denso
dalla ferita di sotto.
Ero un piccolo Pan, gracile, anemico,
nel primo sboccio timido dei sensi;
re del mondo, dell'orto;

ciega a la nueva luz que irrumpe;
sentados entre nuestras cosas,
familiar y holgado el modo de vida,
nada perdido aún del todo.
Saltadores y delfines adornan los muros pintados;
el sol se levanta,
o se pone, sobre un mar Tirreno azul;
en la copa ilustrada el vino rebosa y luce;
una flor desconocida abrasa con incienso mudo
el aire estantío del lugar.

A TOMB IN TARQUINIA
The two of us, on the livingroom couch,
An Etruscan couple,
Blindeyed to the new light let suddenly in;
Sitting among the things that belong to us,
The style of living familiar and easy,
Nothing yet utterly lost.
Leapers and dolphins adorn the painted walls;
The sun is rising,
Or setting, over a blue Tyrrhenian Sea;
In the pictured cup the wine brims and glistens;
An unknown flower burns with odorless incense
The still air of the place.

a mi infancia? Llevo un vestido de verano
amarillo, y la falda
forma un círculo perfecto.
Girar y girar
hasta que se desplegaba al máximo
era irresistible… La hierba y los árboles,
mis brazos tendidos, y la falda
remolinaban en la luz ocre
de una temprana tarde de junio.
Y entonces supe
que tendría que vivir, y seguir
viviendo: qué pena tan grande; y aún hoy
qué pena abrasa,
sin destruirlo, mi corazón.
*
EVENING SUN
Why does this light force me back
to my childhood? I wore a yellow
summer dress, and the skirt
made a perfect circle.
Turning and turning
until it flared to the limit
was irresistible… The grass and trees,
my outstretched arms, and the skirt
whirled in the ochre light
of an early June evening.
And I knew then
that I would have to live, and go on
living: what a sorrow it was; and still
what sorrow burns
but does not destroy my heart.

COLADA
*
WASH
All day the blanket snapped and swelled
on the line, roused by a hot spring wind…
From there it witnessed the first sparrow,
early flies lifting their sticky feet,
and a green haze on the south-sloping hills.
Clouds rode over the mountain… At dusk
I took the blanket in, and we slept,
restless, under its fragrant weight.

*
DEPRESSION IN WINTER
There comes a little space between the south side of a boulder
and the snow that fills the woods around it.
Sun heats the stone, reveals
a crescent of bare ground: brown ferns,
and tufts of needles like red hair,
acorns, a patch of moss, bright green…
I sank with every step up to my knees,
throwing myself forward with a violence
of effort, greedy for unhappiness—
until by accident I found the stone,
with its secret porch of heat and light,
where something small could luxuriate, then
turned back down my path, chastened and calm.

LA DIFERENCIA
Bino y rebino…
¡Feliz parece! Ronca y exultante,
tiende el pescuezo al invernal ocaso.
Alea, salta, se zambulle y juega:
desde luego no piensa que es mortal;
desde luego no sueña con la Pascua,
entre rútilos filos de cocina.
Hermana mía, cándida ansarina,
que no existe la Muerte me demuestras:
sólo se muere cuando lo has pensado.
Mas tú no piensas. ¡Y tu suerte es bella!
Pues no es calamidad que te cocinen:
el mal está en saberlo de antemano.
*
LA DIFFERENZA
Penso e ripenso: — Che mai pensa l’oca
gracidante alla riva del canale?
Pare felice!

se mofa de mi ocaso con calmos ojos claros;
desprecia el pensar lento, vanos estudios, trabas;
Sin lamentos, oh Muerte, desciendo al reino oscuro;
A mi hermano sonrío… luego, conforme y sacio,
le cedo a él la copa. Y uno con él me siento.
*
irride al mio tramonto con chiari occhi sereni;
sdegna i pensieri torpidi, gli studi vani, i freni;
è pur dolce conforto rivivere in altrui.
Senza querele, o Morte, discendo ai regni bui;
Poi, rassegnato e sazio,
a lui cedo la coppa. E già mi sento lui.

LA PUERTA SIN CIERRE
Fue tras muchos años,
pero al fin tocó,
no tenía la puerta
cierre que cerrar.
Sople la candela,
de puntas pisé,
juntando las manos
la puerta rogué.
Mas sonó otro toque.
De mi ventanal
monté en el alféizar
y afuera bajé.
De espalda al alféizar:
«¡Pase», lo invité,
fuera lo que fuera
que en la puerta dio.
Así que de un toque
mi jaula dejé,
me escondí en el mundo,
mudé con la edad.

THE LOCKLESS DOOR
It went many years,
But at last came a knock,
And I thought of the door
With no lock to lock.
I blew out the light,
I tip-toed the floor,
And raised both hands
In prayer to the door.
But the knock came again
My window was wide;
I climbed on the sill
And descended outside.
Back over the sill
I bade a "Come in"
To whoever the knock
At the door may have been.
So at a knock
I emptied my cage
To hide in the world
And alter with age.

BUSCANDO LA ERMITA DE ZHANG ZIRONG EN PEÑA GRULLA BLANCA
Verde cantil de Peña Grulla Blanca,
donde moró apartado un ermitaño.
Cortil y grada limpios de agua y roca,
bosque y restaño libres de hacha y red.
Las añadas sazonan pinos verdes;
intemperies arralan bambú amargo.
Con nostalgia de su primer estado,
retorno vara en mano a mi chamizo.

LA LONJA NORTE DE XIANGZHOU
Poco tengo que hacer en Lonja Sur;
la Corte Norte inundan brisa y bruma.
Flores silvestres celan los senderos;
haz de la alberca rozan las glicinias.
Salta el pez donde se abren lentejillas;
