Maybe you’ve noticed: there’s been a shift in how people and movements that are anti-trans present themselves, and it feels designed to make them more palatable to people who would otherwise recoil at arguments that position trans people as threats. They don’t hate trans people! They’re very concerned about them! Think of the risks! Think of the children!! If that language sounds familiar, it’s because the anti-abortion movement uses this same playbook. Just like a crisis pregnancy center might advertise itself as offering pre-natal care, counseling or free pregnancy tests, an anti-trans provider might offer “gender exploratory” therapy or claim to offer valuable information on the “harms” of transition. Just like reporters being too willing to parrot unsubstantiated, anti-choice claims to the greater public, anti-trans groups are using places like the New York Times—and the fact that many people within those spaces were already held anti-trans beliefs-- to spread misinformation and position their “experts” as the reliable voices on trans care. Quite contrary to articles that claim people are being rushed through transition, accessing gender affirming care remains difficult for most people, especially young people. There are a limited number of places that provide it (and, due to transphobic violence both digital and physical, some of the places that used to aren’t able to anymore), waiting lists, and a dozen other barriers to access. Not to mention that plenty of elements of transition, especially physical transition, require at least a letter from a therapist. And now, on top of that, you have healthcare providers and resources who seek only to discourage or pressure all trans and nonbinary folks into not transitioning. This is a recipe for trans folks, or the people helping them access care, to walk right into a trap, and enables ongoing, anti-trans bias more broadly. Here's a guide from Scarleteen co-director Sam Wall to help trans people, and especially, adults in the lives of trans young people, to identify legitimate — and illegitimate — sources of trans care.

Transcribed Twitter thread by Mouin Rabbani about why Israel has suddenly stopped equating Hamas with ISIS.
About a week ago the US and Israeli suddenly stopped comparing Hamas to ISIS. The term “Hamas-ISIS” had become de rigueur among Israeli officials in their public statements, and along with their partners-in-crime in Washington they often insisted Hamas is worse – much worse even – than ISIS. It’s a familiar playbook. In 2001 the Twin Towers had barely collapsed and Ariel Sharon immediately began insisting the PLO was no different than Al-Qaeda and that Yassir Arafat was worse than Usama Bin Laden. Israel’s flunkies and apologists immediately and dutifully followed suit.
But “Hamas-ISIS” is no longer. Israel’s acolytes have for the most part yet to receive the message, and continue parroting a line that has gone out of style with their leaders, but will probably follow suit at some point within the next 24 months.
So, what happened? Most obviously, the US and Israel have been negotiating, concluding, and implementing a series of agreements with “Hamas-ISIS”. It’s not a particularly good look to be in intensive discussions with, and make one concession after the other to, a movement that is purportedly more vicious and brutal than an organization that not only the West but also the international community considers entirely beyond the pale. Especially at a time when a broader agreement, extending beyond an exchange of captives, is reportedly being discussed in Doha by the CIA and Mossad chiefs – the city where not only the Qatari mediators but also Hamas’s current and former political leaders, Ismail Haniyyeh and Khalid Mashal, also reside.
The fact that Hamas is negotiating exchanges of captives and releasing not only foreign but also Israeli Jewish civilians, rather than slitting their throats in gruesome snuff videos also doesn’t help the cause. Nor do testimonies by released captives that, the violence and abuse of their initial seizure notwithstanding, they have generally been treated humanely. Of course, no civilian deserves to be held captive unless convicted of a specific crime by legitimate authority, yet the contrast between the testimonies of released Israeli and Palestinian civilian captives is enormous. Released Palestinian women and children speak of constant physical and verbal abuse, particularly since 7 October; all manner of deprivation; and an escalation of abuse once it became apparent they would be released. Furious at Palestinian joy at the release of their own captives, rampaging Israeli forces have also shot and killed several Palestinian well-wishers, enveloped most others in clouds of tear gas, and raided the homes of receiving families to evict journalists and warn against celebrations or even “expressions of joy”.
Palestinians are not ruled by the Israeli government in the same sense that Israelis within the pre-1967 boundaries are. Rather, they are subject to military government, effectively an Israeli military dictatorship whose rule is best described as totalitarian. It has for example banned flags, even particular color combinations (in clothing and painting for example), and in 2023 also “expressions of joy”.
Hamas videos of the release of their captives, in which they assist the elderly, provide water bottles, and wave goodbye (not quite ISIS-friendly optics) have been criticized as political theatre and propaganda. Fair enough. But it is still quite the contrast with the scenes outside Ofer Prison where Israel releases Palestinian captives. There, the best that Israeli propaganda can achieve is clouds of tear gas, intimidation of journalists, live ammunition, and bullet-ridden corpses. (And, for good measure, arresting more civilians than it releases.)
So not only did the US and Israel want to avoid the accusation they were negotiating with ISIS, the available imagery is also unconducive to the narrative. Joe Biden will go to his grave insisting he has seen videos of infants beheaded by Hamas, but it’s gotten to the point where even poor Jill rolls her eyes. Other Israeli and US claims have also drawn the short end of the stick. For example, the Israeli authorities recently reduced their tally of Israelis killed on 7 October from 1400 to 1200. The reason is that 200 corpses, burned beyond recognition, belonged to Palestinians rather than Israelis. This suggests Hamas was not systematically setting fire to live humans. Similarly, Israeli intelligence (or what’s left of it) has now concluded that Hamas did not have prior knowledge of the rave organized close to the boundary between Israel and the Gaza concentration camp. Therefore this could not have been a premeditated atrocity. I am of course not claiming no atrocities were committed on 7 October, but rather that as more facts become available the “Hamas-ISIS” propaganda line becomes increasingly untenable.
If we put aside Biden’s hallucinations and take Netanyahu off endless repetition for a moment, the ideological, organizational, and political relationship between Hamas and ISIS remains a legitimate field of inquiry. It’s also pretty conclusive. Hamas and ISIS are indeed both Islamist movements. But that’s pretty much where the comparison ends. To suggest they are equivalent or identical is akin to claiming there is no difference between constitutional and absolute monarchies because their heads of state acquire office in the same manner. Hamas is the Palestinian chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood, a regional Islamist movement formed almost a century ago. Its various national branches have sought to achieve political power through mass mobilization, and as such have formed political parties; provided social services; participated in elections, coups, and uprisings; engaged in armed campaigns against domestic autocracy and foreign domination; and in a number of cases formed internationally-recognized governments. It’s a fundamentally different template than that pursued by ISIS.
Hamas was established in the cauldron of the Israeli occupation, and like other Palestinian organizations actively participated in the struggle to end Israeli rule. In 2006 it participated in Palestinian legislative elections, fully certified by the Carter Center, which it won. In 2007 Hamas seized power in the Gaza Strip after a year during which its various domestic and foreign adversaries, to put it politely, actively worked to undermine it. In the intervening years it has in addition to attacks which have garnered global headlines developed relations with states as diverse as Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Russia, and Qatar; negotiated prisoner exchanges and ceasefires with Israel; freed and released foreign hostages (including BBC journalist Alan Johnston) abducted by rivals and criminal gangs; endorsed a two-state settlement with Israel; and cooperated with a variety of UN agencies and international organisations. Its governance of the Gaza Strip years has, to varying degrees, been hegemonic and repressive, but like its politics and policies defies any comparison to that experienced under ISIS’s self-styled caliphate in Syria and Iraq.
ISIS has in fact been bitterly critical of Hamas, and considers the group in its entirety, as well as its individual members, “apostates” and “polytheists” – its most serious transgressions of all. This is on account of, among other mortal sins, Hamas’s participation in democratic elections, its failure to govern solely in accordance with shari’a (Islamic law), relations with Iran and other regional states, and prioritization of Palestinian liberation. Perhaps for this reason Hamas made short shrift of attempts by the Islamic State movement to establish a foothold in the Gaza Strip, primarily in Rafah, during 2015-2016.
END. Postscript: @rao2of has kindly pointed out a significant oversight on my part: that in its efforts to normalise relations with Egypt after initial post-Sisi coup hostility, Hamas began cooperating with Egypt's anti-ISIS campaign in Sinai, drawing even greater fury from it.

israel is not "indiginous land" im sorry. i understand you want a place to call your own and it sucks that you dont, but it doesnt give you the right to push out an entire other nation of people. there are hundreds of thousands of people who are older then your state. it sadly just isnt feasible
First of all, you’re obviously completely ignorant of the thousands of years of Jewish history in the area that is the modern state of Israel, long, long before the Arab colonisation of the same area. If it’s indigenous to anyone, it absolutely is to the Jews. Read a history book or several.
Second, a two state solution is possible if everyone acts in good faith, no need for any pushing out, though sadly, peace seems a long way off right now - although Free Palestine activists routinely use genocidal slogans and rhetoric in relation to Israel and their belief that it shouldn’t exist at all - so who thinks they have the right to push out an entire other nation of people now?
Lastly, it’s not *my* state - I’m not Jewish or Israeli, as I have stated several times, just a goy who won’t be silent while one of the most persecuted peoples in the history of the human race are having to endure a huge rise in hatred against them, by people who parrot completely ahistorical, conspiratorial and frankly, lunatic shit straight out of a Nazi playbook.
I do quite often reblog posts by Jewish bloggers talking about their experiences because a) in solidarity and because there is no point in me just talking about how against antisemitism I am if I ignore Jewish voices on the subject that affects them and constantly talk over them instead - far too many people are doing that and b) the posts are often very informative and educational for me personally, and perhaps you might benefit from doing the same thing. Listen to what Jewish people are saying.

I hate linking to Mike Miller articles because he can't stop himself from taking shots at Trump and his supporters (who are the ones paying is bills), but this is too much of a fascinating look into how far removed from reality the left in this country is. And this isn't just a Hollywood bubble thing. There are real people who supposedly live in the real world who think a GOP win next week is going to be the literal end of the country. They think voting will disappear, that minorities will be rounded up, that "trans children" (which don't exist) are going to be killed, that America will immediately become the new Nazi Party, etc, etc, etc. We look at this, and we know it's insane. Most normal people know it's insane. But these people actually believe it. No one would have ever suggested using an emergency system to urge people to vote for a particular party in any other election. Not even in 2020 or 2016 was this floated. And if it ever had been suggested, to the president no less, no president would have ever seriously considered it. Biden did. These people have been driven into a frenzy of fear by evil people gaslighting them. This is why you're seeing republican politicians attacked at rallies, and threatened in their homes; it's why you're seeing people trying to assassinate supreme court justices. It's why we've had riots and attacks, all from the left, over the past several years. It's also why the media propagandists are going so hard on this Paul Pelosi nothingburger. "Accuse your enemies of that which you are doing". That's been their playbook for decades. If you ever want to know what the current plan is, just look at what the Democrats are accusing the Republicans of. 9 out of ten times, it's really what they're doing themselves.

I watched a great video by Renegade Cut last night, and a realisation dropped on me like a ton of bricks.
youtube
In it, he does an analysis of what kind of rhetoric the Far Right uses to defame queer people and how that works.
And I realized that antis are doing the exact same thing.
Leon says in the video, that (and I paraphrase) fascists link queerness to sexualisation and paedophilia and blatantly make shit up to get a reaction out of the queer community. And then you're damned if you do and damned if you don't; if you try to refute these allegations, they will frame it as you defending paedophilia, but if you don't say anything it's worse - they will take it as an admission of guilt.
And that's what antis are doing. That exact same thing right out of the fash playbook.
Antis link fiction to RL paedophilia and other kinds of abuse. And they blatantly make shit up (like the whole normalisation argument) that has no foot in reality and has been refuted by researchers multiple times. They harass and attack people just wanting to enjoy fiction, and if you do defend your right to engage with fiction any way you like, they will call you a secret paedophile or an abuser. They will say you defend paedophilia and abuse.
But if you don't defend yourself, it's worse. And that is why we need to push back against this bullshit.
I'm not claiming that antis are crypto-fascists. I think that most of them don't even know what the word means. But they do use the same rhetoric and they parrot fash ideological talking points ("wholesome" vs. "degenerate", sex and specifically kink negativity, mental "hygiene", and "think of the children") just like TERFs do. Because in the end, they don't give a shit about the actual well-being of actual children - they want to push their ideas of morality onto others and they want control over people. And if they don't get that control, they want everyone who doesn't fit their narrow standards to disappear. Preferably to die.
You know. Like fascists.

Parrots are intelligent and social birds that can make wonderful companions. However, they require proper training to ensure they are well-behaved and happy in your home. Getting Started
Before diving into training, it's essential to understand your parrot's needs and behavior. Parrots are highly social creatures that thrive on interaction, mental stimulation, and a proper diet. Ensure your parrot has a spacious cage, fresh water, and a well-balanced diet to set the foundation for successful training.
Building Trust
The first step in parrot training is to establish trust between you and your bird. Spend time sitting near the cage and talking softly to your parrot. Offer treats like nuts or fruits through the cage bars, allowing the bird to associate your presence with positive experiences.
Step-Up Command
Once your parrot is comfortable with your presence, start teaching the "step-up" command. Place your hand in front of the bird and say "step-up" while gently nudging its lower belly. Use a perch or a stick if your parrot is initially hesitant. Reward your parrot with treats and praise when it complies.
Target Training
Target training involves teaching your parrot to touch a specific object, like a stick or a clicker, with its beak. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats or affection, each time your parrot successfully touches the target. This exercise helps improve focus and responsiveness.
Vocal Training
Parrots are renowned for their ability to mimic sounds and words. Start with simple words or phrases and repeat them consistently while interacting with your bird. Reward your parrot when it repeats these sounds. Gradually, you can expand its vocabulary.
Behavioral Training
To address undesirable behaviors like biting or excessive screaming, use a technique called "positive punishment." When your parrot misbehaves, briefly withdraw attention, such as turning your back or leaving the room. Ensure that your parrot understands the connection between its actions and the change in your behavior.
Enrichment and Exercise
Parrots are active birds that need mental and physical stimulation. Provide toys, puzzles, and opportunities for flight within a safe and controlled environment. "The Parrot Playbook: Strategies for Your Bird Active + Ebook" can be an excellent resource for finding engaging activities to keep your parrot entertained.

Thinking about how when I was younger, my best friend would "come out" to me each time she felt that a different word or identity fit her. She would come to me, be like "I think I'm bisexual because XYZ reasons" and I would respond with what I thought was supportive words and I'd tell her that nothing she could ever tell me would change how much I love and respect her. First she identified as asexual, then bisexual, then lesbian, then nonbinary, then gender fluid, and finally a trans man. Each time, I told her that I'm proud of her and anything she discovers about herself will never change our friendship.
She told me after four years of this, that she wished I would be more supportive, because hearing me say that nothing would change just made her feel like I was parroting the supportive friend playbook and that my words weren't my own. We can unpack all of that later if we need to, but the reason I'm thinking of this is because I still, to this day, do not understand how I wasn't supportive enough, and I'm finding it wildly funny in this moment that I was "unsupportive" but every time I tried to tell her that I was confused about my sexuality she would just tell me "oh you're definitely straight, I think you just have some issues to work out"
I definitely had some issues to work out. Namely, being friends with homophobes and gender trenders who made me feel like I couldn't possibly be gay because I was "too normal"

I just read your Twitter thread about engaging with TERFs/TERF-lites re: "kink critical" because I've been reading responses to the ask I sent OTNF. I actually read all of the threads you linked to because they're very engaging reads. 😅
I don't have a Twitter so I can't respond there, but I found it really interesting that the way you recommend dealing with TERFs (do not engage, do not try to convince them you're a person, just block them and move on) is also how I've seen anti-fascist experts recommend you deal with fascists/incels/alt-right dweebs on the internet. The similarities between TERF behavior and online fascist behavior is something I find fascinating. You deal with a TERF on Tumblr the same way you deal with an Incel on Reddit because both are predators fueled by hate looking for an easy target. Both groups demand the scapegoating of a more vulnerable group as a cost of membership.
I'd love to know if you have any thoughts on this, and if so, I'd love to read them. Treating TERFs as the indefensible bigots they are seems to be an effective tactic, and I think there's value in insisting on labeling them as extremists. However, I don't know if there's been any research on TERFs like there has on incels and the alt-right. It seems like a deep rabbit hole to go down.
I'm glad you found the threads interesting!
I tend to apply my academic upbringing (philosophy, theology and literature) to most things I talk about, because that's just how I experience the world, but I don't do gender nearly as strictly as I do, say, media analysis/historical revisionism critique, because all my gender/race insights are more from a lived perspective than a "studied/research" perspective.
My thing with TERFs and other extremist/radical niche groups is that I've sort of reached the conclusion they're essentially disconnected micro cells of high control groups, and so I tend to apply moderation methods surrounding high control groups to them. Their message itself is the harmful thing, so minimizing exposure to it is the best way of dealing with it, in my experience. There's value in challenging their ideas when they start showing in people you personally know and have a connection to, because a lot of times, a radicalization pipeline gets derailed because someone close to them pushes back and that sort of jolts people awake, so to speak.
The good news is that there is in fact plenty of ink spilled over the years, regarding TERFs. Third wave feminism does contend a lot with the burn-everything-to-the-ground insights of your average second wave radical feminist, and the clout-chasing idiots who pretend to be that for the sake of internet brownie points and the chance to shit on trans people. The thing about TERFs is that they tend to parrot the talking points but not really talk in nuance about their framework because the framework is rotten and it doesn't really take long for a thinking person to start poking holes in it.
Some resources, top of my head, that I've found incredibly useful in navigating TERFs from a less lived perspective and a more academic one:
The Clayman Conversations about the TERF Industrial Complex.
TERF wars: An Introduction.
Terfism is White Distraction: On BLM, Decolonising the Curriculum, Anti-Gender Attacks and Feminist Transphobia.
Decolonizing Trans/Gender Studies: Teaching Gender, Race and Sexuality in Times of the Rise of the Global Right.
I found the quotes and bibliography of these to be a decent starting point to start digging into the WTFery of TERFs.
Another source I recommend a lot as a starting point is The Alt-Right Playbook video series by Innuendo Studios. The entire series is absolutely amazing at neatly breaking down and explaining exactly how alt-right tactics work, how to recognize them, and in some cases how to not engage with them. It was one of the first things that made me sort of zero in on the wide similarities between seemingly disperse/ideologically opposed groups, because they're all pulling from the reactionary, radicalized playbook and I think it's useful to know how to spot it.
If you can't stomach the whole series, and it's a lot, so that's fair, the one I 100% wish was required viewing before joining any kind of social media or online community is this one:
How to radicalize a normie.

I came across a quote from the Howard Stern interview Harry did and it was pretty funny actually. He said it was freeing because there was nothing he could do to make sure a song is a hit or does well; that it’s a reminder it’s about the music and it’s not about him saying the right or wrong thing in an interview or encouraging people to listen to a song. It’s laughable, because the day, the minute his songs are released, you see them put on all the popular Spotify playlists. Sure, most people won’t notice or care about that so why not be at least a little honest? His fans aren’t going to care it’s not organic, they would dismiss that anyway or simply say he deserves it. All he has to do for a song to be a hit is have money and power behind him and building his career.
Harry is following the corporate playbook, creating the perception that his success is organic, that he doesn’t chase success, it just “happens” because people just can’t avoid loving him.
And of course, parroting Louis’ line that he doesn’t chase radio success but makes whatever is closest to his heart— while the musical styles swung sharply from soft rock on HS1 to synth pop on HS3, chasing the Spotify hits metrics.
