Nashuja was well established at the front. His physical strength made him superior in close combat, and until now he was, thanks Astanna, unharmed.

The evening Pamesijos arrived at the camp, the men had a well deserved rest at the outskirts of the battlefield, close to the burnt down temple.

- Cousin Pamesijo! Welcome!

- Cousin Nashuja! Are you hurt? You are full of blood?

- No, no, don't worry. It's not my blood!

- Aha! So you have been fighting? Where is the enemy?

- They are holding their position behind that little hill. We are probably not going to see them until tomorrow morning. That's how it's been the last few days.

- Okay, I'm here to fight you know!

- You don't know what you wish for. It's not a game.

And Nashuja was right of course. The next morning the enemy was back. And they were a vicious bunch.

- Εμπρός!! Εμπρός!! Forward!! Captain Trypitis shouted.

Pamesijos was in the back row, and his enthusiasm waned as the strain and fear set in.

Slowly, but surely, the reality of war dawned on him. It was brutal.

- I don't know if the girl knows or not, but you will never guess who attacked him!

- Well tell me! Who?

- They told me that Olimáchos had a thing with Lykrevia Troizena, and that Lykrevia's father was very upset about it and beat him up. Badly. Some say he might not survive, but I'm sure they're exaggerating.

- Lykrevia's father did that? Aranare? Amunet's husband?

- Yes! Can you believe it?

- Holy Astanna! Who would have thought ... I'm shocked...

- The situation for Mpatíni will be even more difficult now that her brother can't protect her. Even if it's temporary. At the moment he can't even stand on his feet they say. And if he dies...

- Oh no! This is terrible news! Well that's it. I can't let this happen. The girl will move in here. As Teo's wife to be.

- Are you sure Noor? People might talk.

- Oh, I'm sure they will. People will always talk. In the past it used to be me they were talking about. And Mpatíni doesn't deserve it, she is a nice girl and didn't do nothing wrong. Eira, will you support me? Will you stand by me? And Teo and his wife?

- Of course Noor. Always. You are my sister. And I feel for the girl as well, I never understood why people were so mean to her.

- I can always count on you Eira. Thank you. And now we will have a wedding to plan, I guess! I bet you didn't see that coming when you came over for a tea and a chat!

- I sure didn't haha!

It was Teo that got to brake the news to Mpatíni, both the good news and the bad news. The circumstances may not have been ideal, but the young couple were very happy to be able to tie the knot.

Just a few months later they got married. Spring was on it's way, but it was still cold when the young couple had a simple home marriage. Mpatíni was looking very pretty (but a bit cold) in a dress Noor and Eira had remade from one of Simadhne's dresses, and with a beautiful braid made by Areth and Bansabira.

It was of course unusual to have a wedding at this time of the year, and there were not many guests outside the family. Mpatínis brother was still not well after the fight with Aranare, but was helped, or should we say carried, to the house to be able to attend.

Kyria Figaleía had politely declined at first, but changed her mind when Noor and Eira hinted that they soon would have to discuss the marriages for three young ladies: Areth, Khará and Bansabira. The presence of Kyria Figaleía was very important, especially for the bride, because no one could turn the tide of public opinion like Kyria Figaleía.

It was a smart move, and a successful one. When the summer came, nobody talked about Mpatíni anymore. Despite of (or perhaps precisely because of) the fact that her brother Olimáchos never recovered from his injuries after his unpleasant encounter with Aranare. A few weeks after his sister's wedding his condition worsened, and he past away. And fingers pointed at Aranare.

Everyone was sure that Aranare had killed him, but there was no way to prove it. Nevertheless, he had to pay a heavy price. It turned out that Lykrevia secretly had married Olimáchos and she was also with child. Now she refused to have anything to do with her father, and survived by picking fruit and olives around Manthos, as her husband had previously done. Evil tongues meant she was also becoming a bit insane, but, you know, people have always had something to say about single mothers.

Anyway, on this winter night, after Mpatíni and Teo's wedding, it was all peace and happiness. And maybe, (well we don't know this for sure, but we can speculate, right?) just maybe, the foundation for a new generation of Asijakas were laid, just this night.

Mpatíni Kitanétou was from a very poor family. Actually it wasn't much of a family, it was just Mpatíni and her brother now. Her parents were both dead, and the last few years with their father had been so awful, that the children felt more relieved than sad when he died in an accident.

Now Mpatíni and her three years older brother Olimáchos made a living from begging, picking olives and fruits, chopping wood and other work on the farms around Manthos.

They had no permanent home, but lived on the outskirts of the village, exposed to the elements and highway robbers. It was not easy.

Mpatíni hated when they couldn't find work and had to go to the Agorá to beg for money or bread. She detested the overbearing glances, the vicious and stubborn rumors, gossip moving through the crowd like a hissing snake. Rumors that their mother Mpistaméni was a pythoness, and most likely a woman of the street. Oh yes, a real beauty, but probably a witch. She was said to dance in such an alluring way that men willingly gave up all their valuables and money for her. Which was quickly taken over by her ponce, supposedly their father.

Now that everybody could see that Mpatíni had inherited her mother's beauty, there were insinuations that she had followed in her mother's footsteps, and that her brother, obviously not known to be an honorable man, was poncing his own sister.

The siblings were aware of what was whispered behind their backs, and sometimes smug brats even shouted to them, but what could they do? There was no judge or court to appeal to, only the unjust and ruthless opinion of the mob, impossible to fight.

They were outcasts, no matter what the truth was. It really wasn't fair, but this was their reality, and it wasn't much they could do about it.

Since Nashuja wasn't capable of fighting, he was put in charge of organizing the camp, and help out with the cooking. Surprisingly he found himself enjoying those tasks, and he had, without paying attention to it, picked up a thing or two from his mother Simadhne.

The camp was now more permanent, since the battle itself took a longer time than intended. King Ifiklis' men fought heroically, but made only small progress in the war. It was a standstill.

And as in any war, there were losses and injuries.

The most serious injury, not directly connected with the battles, involved the King himself and his beloved horse Kappa.

It was a hard fall. But then he got up, shook his head and seemed normal.

After a few hours it was obvious that he might not be okay after all. Some really ugly bruises started to show, and he was feeling nauseous, cold and dizzy.

Nashuja helped him to his bed rest and kept him company. He was careful not to mention a word about their personal relationship. They talked about horses, Nashuja's wrestling, favorite food, the political situation. It was quite relaxed.

However, even after resting, King Ifiklis didn't seem to get better.

TEEN: It’s obvious to anyone who has eyes and ears that Lykrevia’s relationship with her stepmother and siblings is not the best. Is it jealousy? Bitterness? Evil demons? At this point Lykrevia just wants to leave the farm to start an exciting life somewhere else.

CHILD: It hasn’t been easy for Lykrevia after her father re-married and she got new siblings. When her beloved grandfather also died, she started talking to herself. The family hoped that she would outgrow it with time.

TODDLER: Lykrevia had to learn early to take care of herself, because she lost her mother when she was just a few days old. She is strong willed and stubborn, but quite sweet deep down.
