The agreement was made, and the wedding became expensive, just as Queen Alkmini had predicted. There were many prominent guests, and even the big throne room filled up.

The bride and groom didn't seem overjoyed, but perhaps they were affected by the seriousness of the moment.

The King of Koiláda Chalkoú was invited but did not come to the wedding. He was probably still a bit crossed, even though he had received a handsome compensation, in form of horses, cattle, gems and precious metals. However, he did send his sister to represent him at the wedding, the incredibly beautiful Princess Amphiera.

Other honorable guests were of course Prince Heraklis and his family. It was the first time little Myrrhini was attending publicly, but she seemed more interested in the birds outside than in the wedding ceremony.

The bride's family were also there, even if it was quite a long journey for them, and for that reason little prince Philokratis was left at home. Queen Laonome was not feeling well, it was possible that she was expecting again, so they took a more discreet position in the throne room, to be able to slip out to the private chambers if necessary.

The distinguished ladies of Manthos were all there, of course, and Kyria Figaleía wouldn't miss it for the world.

It truly was a grand celebration, and everybody agreed that it had been a fabulous ceremony.

Except maybe for the bride and groom.

Figaleía don't have a problem with humans sims, if they keep a polite distance. However, in general, she finds it more pleasurable to be with animals, especially cats. You might call her a crazy cat lady. But wouldn't it be crazy not to love cats?

In Manthos she fills two very important roles; she is the one everybody comes to with their sick animals. In most cases she can help.

Secondly, she is the matchmaker. Even though she is doesn’t enjoy simmish company that much, she is an excellent observer and knows the sim personality in and out. Or maybe she doesn’t enjoy simmish company because she understand them all too well?

- Did you hear him, Noor? "Hope you continue your science career, even though you are now married" and yadda yadda. He is such a hypocrite!

The families had come together to celebrate Mezamura's wedding, and Teteriu had just finished his speech for the bride.

- I'm sure he meant well, Eira. He wants what best for his sister doesn't he? And Aurelio seems like a decent man.

- Yeah, it's nothing wrong with Aurelio, he is fine. But Teteriu just say things he doesn't live by. Pretending to be something he isn't. If he really meant what he is saying, why didn't he let me continue my studies? And this big party... giving them your old house... he is just showing off.

- The party is great though, and we all needed something to celebrate after this terrible summer.

- Oh sweet Astanna, yes! First uncle Itaja, then Telamon, and Nashuja wanting to leave Manthos for good. It sure hasn't been joyful.

- Well uncle's death wasn't that unexpected, he was getting older, and I'm just grateful Nashuja was still here when he passed. But Telamon...?! Did you learn exactly what happened?

- Not really. They just told me he was found dead outside the shelter where he lived. From what I've heard he had stopped drinking, but maybe he had a relapse? Or maybe he was robbed? Or struck by lightning? I don't know. I'm still in a bit of a shock, because deep down I did hope to see him again.

- So how is aunt Simadhne coping? Is she feeling better now?

- Well you know. Since we moved in after uncle's death she's been kind of busy with helping with the children and cooking for us all. But when Nashuja is leaving... I fear she will fall apart. We will all miss him so much. And knowing we will never see him again... It is unbearable!

- And Pamesijos? Will he go with him?

- Not if I can prevent it, Noor whispered. How can I loose them both?

- Really makes you think about the sacrifice they made, doesn't it?

- What do you mean? The war?

- I mean our parents Noor, when they let us both go. We were so young! About Khará's age actually! Can you imagine how it must have been for them?

- Well it was different. They wanted to keep us safe.

- Yes, exactly! Not so different from this situation, when you think about it.

- I've never thought about it that way, but you are right.

- But I'm not sure if I ever could have let Khará go, under any circumstances, so I totally understand your reluctance to let Pamesijos go with Nashuja.

- You will have to let her go some day anyway...

- What?

- I mean, she will move out, get married, have her own household. All of our children will. It is terrible, but true!

- Noor! Do you have to talk about such excruciating future visions? Can't we just enjoy this party and have some fun?

- ♫♫ Ναι, να ζήσουν, ευτυχισμένοι για πάντα! ♫♫

- I don't know if the girl knows or not, but you will never guess who attacked him!

- Well tell me! Who?

- They told me that Olimáchos had a thing with Lykrevia Troizena, and that Lykrevia's father was very upset about it and beat him up. Badly. Some say he might not survive, but I'm sure they're exaggerating.

- Lykrevia's father did that? Aranare? Amunet's husband?

- Yes! Can you believe it?

- Holy Astanna! Who would have thought ... I'm shocked...

- The situation for Mpatíni will be even more difficult now that her brother can't protect her. Even if it's temporary. At the moment he can't even stand on his feet they say. And if he dies...

- Oh no! This is terrible news! Well that's it. I can't let this happen. The girl will move in here. As Teo's wife to be.

- Are you sure Noor? People might talk.

- Oh, I'm sure they will. People will always talk. In the past it used to be me they were talking about. And Mpatíni doesn't deserve it, she is a nice girl and didn't do nothing wrong. Eira, will you support me? Will you stand by me? And Teo and his wife?

- Of course Noor. Always. You are my sister. And I feel for the girl as well, I never understood why people were so mean to her.

- I can always count on you Eira. Thank you. And now we will have a wedding to plan, I guess! I bet you didn't see that coming when you came over for a tea and a chat!

- I sure didn't haha!

It was Teo that got to brake the news to Mpatíni, both the good news and the bad news. The circumstances may not have been ideal, but the young couple were very happy to be able to tie the knot.

Just a few months later they got married. Spring was on it's way, but it was still cold when the young couple had a simple home marriage. Mpatíni was looking very pretty (but a bit cold) in a dress Noor and Eira had remade from one of Simadhne's dresses, and with a beautiful braid made by Areth and Bansabira.

It was of course unusual to have a wedding at this time of the year, and there were not many guests outside the family. Mpatínis brother was still not well after the fight with Aranare, but was helped, or should we say carried, to the house to be able to attend.

Kyria Figaleía had politely declined at first, but changed her mind when Noor and Eira hinted that they soon would have to discuss the marriages for three young ladies: Areth, Khará and Bansabira. The presence of Kyria Figaleía was very important, especially for the bride, because no one could turn the tide of public opinion like Kyria Figaleía.

It was a smart move, and a successful one. When the summer came, nobody talked about Mpatíni anymore. Despite of (or perhaps precisely because of) the fact that her brother Olimáchos never recovered from his injuries after his unpleasant encounter with Aranare. A few weeks after his sister's wedding his condition worsened, and he past away. And fingers pointed at Aranare.

Everyone was sure that Aranare had killed him, but there was no way to prove it. Nevertheless, he had to pay a heavy price. It turned out that Lykrevia secretly had married Olimáchos and she was also with child. Now she refused to have anything to do with her father, and survived by picking fruit and olives around Manthos, as her husband had previously done. Evil tongues meant she was also becoming a bit insane, but, you know, people have always had something to say about single mothers.

Anyway, on this winter night, after Mpatíni and Teo's wedding, it was all peace and happiness. And maybe, (well we don't know this for sure, but we can speculate, right?) just maybe, the foundation for a new generation of Asijakas were laid, just this night.

- I'm not sure if I can help Noor, but I will try. Of course Kyrios Sahphiris is retired now, but we can ask.

- So you think he might consider it, even if there was this "thing" with his daughter and my Teo?

- He is a very honorable person, and his daughter is now engaged elsewhere, so hopefully that wont influence him. I feel for young Lykrevia too, she hasn't had an easy life, so I will do my best to convince him.

- Thank you so much Figaleía. But now to some happier news. It's Areth. She has a good eye to the boy next door, and I was hoping you could help us with the formalities?

- That is good news indeed! Of course I will! Small private wedding? Or something more public?

- You will have to talk with the groom's parents as well of course, but if it is up to me: A big happy wedding party!

- Oh how exciting!

The preparations for the hearing dragged out. The king wanted to attend all the interviews with the council members himself, and not just anyone was selected. Only candidates who had both wealth and knowledge, and who had unassailable morals, were selected.

In the mean while Kyrios Sahphiris had accepted the assignment to represent Lykrevia. Already he had made sure that the conditions were more acceptable, and that Lykrevia, who was still breastfeeding, were able to keep her daughter with her.

One evening Amunet was passing by and she was not happy.

- Noor! You back-stabbing snake! What are you trying to do to me! Destroy my life?!

- Amunet, I'm not doing anything against you...

- But you are! You are helping Aranare's killer! I never believed this about you! How could you!

- Amunet calm down!

- Don't tell me to calm down! You are destroying my family! I can loose everything! Is it that h*re you took in that has poisoned your soul?

- Is it me you are referring to? Mpatíni shouted from the background. How dare you!

- Don't talk about my daughter-in-law like that!

- So you are on her side now are you! Her brother destroyed our family and now she will drag you down to the underground, mind my words!

- I think you should have a good look at your own behavior before you start pointing fingers.

- How could you betray me like this, Noor? I thought you were my friend!

- I am your friend, but I also have to do what I think is fair and just.

- I will never forgive you. NEVER! Πόρνη!

There was a lot of speculation and different opinions in Manthos about the murder. But people were also upset about the new taxes, and the reckless spending by the royal family.

Everybody agreed that the prices at the Agorá was much higher than last year, and then the taxes came on top of that. People were angry and most of them blamed the new queen. Expensive dresses, jewelry, and on top of everything; a brand new temple being built for some foreign god. It was outrageous.

Two weeks after the murder the news hit Manthos like lightning: Lykrevia, Aranares daughter had been arrested for the murder of her own father. It was beyond belief.

Most people, including Prince Heraklis and Captain Trypitis, believed that a swift execution would be the correct way to handle this, but the king insisted on a hearing.

- The girl swear she is innocent, and I'm not convinced she is guilty. We should give her a chance. We will set up a council of ten righteous men, and then see what they decide. Herakli, you will be in charge.

Like everybody else the arrest and the coming hearing were talked about in the Asijaka household.

- That girl was always a bit strange, but do you think she killed her own father Noor?

- I don't know what to think. I do feel sorry for her though. And her child. It's terrible to be accused of something like that, but even worse when you have a child.

- I can only imagine. Maybe they will go lightly on her because of the child?

- I don't know if the council would even consider that. I also heard that Amunet will testify against her. Which is... As much as I love Amunet, her testimony would be biased. She has everything to win on Lykrevia being convicted.

- How so?

- First of all Amunet was pointed at as a possible killer herself, and if Lykrevia is convicted, she is off the hook. And second, she will keep the farm.

- And if Lykrevia is ruled innocent?

- Then the farm will go to Lykrevia as the oldest child, and Amunet would be at her mercy. They might even be homeless. And the investigators might look for other possible killers. Like Amunet. Or even you.

- I would never have done something like that! I hope you believe me?

- I do dear, but the investigators will see that you could have had a reason. I mean, to avenge your brother's death.

- That would be ... Mpatíni swallowed. It would be a nightmare, because nobody in this village would ever believe anything I say. People hated me even before this.

- They don't hate you, but I can see why you feel that way. Let’s hope it never comes to that.

- Nevertheless, I wish we could help Lykrevia, she must be feeling so alone and sad! First losing her boyfriend, then her father, and now this. She could at least need some kind of spokesman.

- She must be terrified. And if she is in fact innocent...

- I wish I knew someone that could help out. Someone that wouldn't judge her from the start.

- I just got an idea. I will talk to Kyria Figaleía in the morning.

Not all glances were unwelcome though. Mpatíni and Teo usually met in secret, but Manthos is a small place, so they were bound to bump in to each other from time to time.

- It's lovely to see you, Teo whispered

- I was hoping you would be here, Mpatíni whispered back

They always tried to hide their emotions when in public, but sometimes they couldn't resist a small kiss or a short embrace, when they thought nobody saw them. But, like we already said, Manthos is a small place, and in small places people are very observant. It didn't take long until Noor had learned the news. She was furious.

- Eteokardiás Asijakas!! How dare you to go behind my back like that? I'm sooo disappointed, Teo!

- But mother, I just ...

- NO, Teo! There is no excuse! You promised! I really don't know what to do with you. First of all you are too young. Second, that girl has no future Teo! No money, no family, no standing, no ethics! When the time comes I want you to find a nice girl. A respectable young woman you can build a family with!

- You don't know her!

- I don't have to know her, to know her kind! She is burnt papyrus! I can't allow you to destroy your future because of a fling.

- But mother, you don't understand!

- I understand more than enough thank you! Now go and finish the garden work. And there will be no more trips to the Agorá, that's for sure!

That evening Noor sat down with Kyria Figaleía, and explained that they were now looking for a suitable wife for Teo.

- Isn't he rather young? Kyria Figaleía asked, I mean, I don't think it's been that long since I was here to discuss your and your sister's marriage?

- Well, time flies Kyria Figaleìa! It must be at least twenty winters back, and Teo is almost fifteen winters now. But how do you think his chances are for a good marriage?

- I'm sure we can find some nice girl for him. I actually have one in mind, but she is of course a tiny bit older than him.

- That wont be a problem, as long as she is from a nice family.

- But of course!

- Great! Let's talk about the details again in a few days.

The two women were very pleased with their preliminary agreement.

Teo on the other hand, was not pleased. He had overheard the conversation, and his heart froze to ice. The thought of being married off to someone he hadn't chosen himself was devastating.

The hearing was long overdue and people in Manthos was starting to wonder what was going on. Was Lykrevia going to be behind bars forever? Meanwhile, daily life continued. And for Noor and the family the most important thing was to settle the formalities concerning Areth and Epiktetos' wedding.

These things were never as easy as one might think, so Noor was grateful that she had the support of Figaleía. But in the end they all agreed, and even if the dowry was a bit higher than Noor had hoped for, she was really happy with the arrangements.

The wedding was a success, but not without a tiny bit of drama.

Lysistrate, the groom's twin sister hadn't showed up. The groom's mother suggested they should start without her. That did not go down well.

Epiktetos fell into tears, mumbling that he wouldn't get married without his sister there, and the atmosphere became nervous and tensed. Luckily Myrto decided to grab everybody's attention, and did a bride's silly walk performance while they were waiting.

Finally Lyisistrate and her husband arrived, embarrassed and sorry, but as they explained later; when you have newborn twins, sometimes things doesn't go as planned.

With everyone present the young couple tied the knot, and Areth became Kyria Pseftikh.

An evening a few days after the wedding Kyria Figaleía paid Noor a visit.

- I think it was very successful, wouldn't you agree?

- It was flawless, it was a lovely ceremony and the reception was also delightful. Thank you so much Figaleía.

- I notice that your friend Amunet didn't come.

- To be honest I didn't expect her to, after all that's happened. I'm disappointed she wasn't there, but it didn't take away the magic. Maybe it was just as well that she didn't come.

- I believe you are right Noor. Unfortunately. Life is not always easy. Which brings me to something I wanted to discuss with you.

- Yes?

- I haven't been feeling well lately. And I was hoping that you or your family would be able to assist me with certain things in the house. If I don't get better. You will be richly rewarded.

- But of course! No reward needed, I would be happy to help.

- I'm planning to leave my house to you, Noor. When I'm gone there isn't anybody else.

- Hopefully it will be a long time to come. And it's way too much of course, I'm sure I don't deserve it, but if that's what you want to do I respect it.

- Just please take care of the cats...

- Of course! But Figaleía, didn't you tell me you had a brother? Maybe he would be interested in the house? And for sure he would want to see you if you are not feeling well?

- I do have a brother, Yousif, but we haven't spoken in ages. I don't know why, it's the distance probably. I think he is in Kastanea now, that's the last thing I heard. I don't know anyone there, so...

- Well, I think maybe Teteriu gave lectures there. I remember, because it was such a long journey, and Eira was worried about him. I can ask Eira tomorrow if she, or Mezamura maybe, still have contacts there.

- That would mean so much to me. If I could see him again before I ... Thank you for your efforts Noor.

- I believe it’s very simple, Your Majesty, Figaleía said, just let the parents stay with their unmarried daughters for the whole stay.

- That really shouldn’t be necessary, Sapfó protested. The point is to put restrictions on the men, not the women.

- Nevertheless. It could work. Would it had helped in your situation? The Queen looked directly at Noor.

- Yes, I believe so, she admitted.

- Kyries, thank you so much for this talk. I will make my decision very soon, and I trust that you do not disclose to anyone what has been said in this room. That would be a big mistake.

- Of course, ma’am! Thank you ma’am.

- That went rather well don’t you think?, Figaleía said when they came outside.

- I don’t know, Noor said, I t remains to be seen what they will do and what will actually change. I’m hopeful, but not entirely convinced. And most of all I am exhausted.

- So how did it go? Itaja asked.

- It went well I think. We had a meeting with the Queen, that’s all I can say.

- A meeting? About what?

- Itaja, I can’t tell you. I promised. Did you know Noor is carrying a child again?

- Really? That’s great! Oh I see. You are trying to distract me, aren’t you?

The four women were left to wait in the Palace library.

- They are going to punish us, I’m sure, Noor said. She knows I’m behind this, and that’s why she’s coming after me.

- If she comes after anyone it would be me, Simadhne sighed. This protest was my idea, and now we will all suffer for it.

- Will you two stop it! Figaleía was quite annoyed. We don’t know why she wants to talk with us, so we shouldn’t make up scenarios that might be completely on the wrong track.

- You guys, they have some real treasures here! Sapfó couldn’t hide her admiration. This must be from Sumeria. Incredible!

- Sapfó! You shouldn’t touch those things! Figaleía sounded nervous.

- I’m just looking! I’ve never seen a collection like this before.

- Kyries!

Queen Alkmini elegantly strode into the room and greeted them one by one. Some phrases of politeness were exchanged and they were asked to sit.

- I wanted to have this talk in private, so that we all can speak freely and in full confidentiality. I wanted Kyria Noor and her mother to be present, because I remember there being some whispering about an episode after your performance here at the palace. I believe that episode involved my oldest son, is that correct?

- Yes, Megaliotate, Noor whispered, surprised that the Queen even knew who she was.

- I would very much like to hear from yourself what actually happened.

- I... I don’t really think... Noor felt so embarrassed and it also hurt even thinking about what had happened, let alone talking about it.

- Please, this is important to me. Have no fear. Your information will not leave this room.

- It’s okay Noor, Simadhne said quietly. Just tell her. If you can. she added.

Noor gave her a rough, unemotional outline of what had happened (Note! Link has TW Sexual Assault) but left out the more intimate details, and the fact that she had become pregnant.

- This is very distressing to hear, and I’m sorry you had such an awful experience here at the Palace, and I apologize on behalf of the family.

Noor nodded but didn’t say anything. She was overwhelmed that she actually got an apology, but it was also hard to believe that the otherwise so well informed queen, had heard this for the first time. Nevertheless, an apology is an apology, she thought to herself.

- Now, the Queen continued, I wanted to hear your opinions on how we could prevent this kind of misrepresentative behavior.

- Your Majesty, Sapfó said. This kind of behavior should be criminalized, no matter the status of the victim, nor the offender.

- That’s out of the question. The assembly would never approve such a thing, and certainly not limit any behavior of the King. The King is, as you all know, above the law.

- That’s very disappointing, if I may speak freely Ma’am.

- That might be so, dear Kyria Sapfó, but it is pure and simple pragmatism. It can not be done.

As they had planned, only a few women went to the throne room. Sapfó and Figaleía were the spokespersons.

- ... and we know, Figaleía’s voice was loud and clear, some of us from personal experience, that members of the Royal Family, has gone far beyond his right, with these young women!

- It is a disgrace for Manthos as a whole, and to the Royal Family in particular! Sapfó added, We can not allow this to continue!

- That is a very serious accusation, Queen Alkmini countered, But if it was true, what would you want me to do with it Kyria Sapfó? If the King’s behavior is unsettling, you should approach him, not me. Isn’t that right Kyria Figaleía?

- Aha! So she knows the problem is King Ifiklis, right? Noor whispered to Eira.

- Of course she does. My impression is that she knows most things that goes on at the Palace, Eira whispered back.

- If I may, Sapfó intervened, as women we trust that the Queen has a lot more influencing power than She gives Herself credit for. Just like the women gathered here today, has a lot of influencing powers on their husbands, fathers and sons. Who knows what they would make them do, or not do.

There was a resounding silence, and everybody held their breath to see what the reaction to Sapfó’s statement would be. This kind of threats might leave them all at risk. Would the queen be furious now?

After what seemed like an eternity, and without so much as an expression, the Queen slightly leaned towards the Princess and whispered something, and the princess whispered something back. Then the Queen nodded imperceptibly and cleared her throat.

- I will cogitate on this matter. It is unclear to me which illegal act you believe has been committed and what exactly you are demanding or proposing. However, I will look further into the matter and give my decision in a few days. I request to see the following persons, as soon as the Queen's audience is over. Kyries Sapfó! Figaleá! Noor! Simadhne!

One by one Queen Alkmini and Heraklis had secret talks with the nobel men of Manthos, sometimes even with Princess Laonome participating. She had a talent for public relations.

The Queen discussed her concerns about the new command, and although most of them expressed understanding, very few were willing to give the Queen direct support. “Incompetence is no reason” they said. “He is still the King”.

The Queen made great efforts to keep the conversations hidden, but the big palace had ears and coincidentally one of them were Kyria Figaleía. She found, after arranging three marriages paid for by Itaja, it natural to discuss these things with him.

And as dark clouds gathered on the horizon of Manthos, Itaja went for a visit Figaleía, to discuss the situation and have a game of Nine men's morris.

- I think women are right to protest about the behavior of the King, Itaja said, don’t get me wrong. But do you think the protest could have unforeseen consequences? I really don’t want to make problems for our country...

- Listen, Figaleía said after giving it some thought. The problem is the King, not the country. I believe the best thing would be to send a handful of women to talk with the Queen, as discreetly as possible. And at the same time make sure that they learn that he whole village is behind them. A silent protest, but within the walls of the palace.

- You are quite a strategist, aren’t you! That’s a smart move. However... *clack*, I still don’t think you can beat me at this game. After all you are a woman! Hahaha!

- Oh yes I am a woman... *clack* *clack* *clack* ... and you should never underestimate nor me, nor any other woman! You are out!

- What the flick...?!
