The agreement was made, and the wedding became expensive, just as Queen Alkmini had predicted. There were many prominent guests, and even the big throne room filled up.

The bride and groom didn't seem overjoyed, but perhaps they were affected by the seriousness of the moment.

The King of Koiláda Chalkoú was invited but did not come to the wedding. He was probably still a bit crossed, even though he had received a handsome compensation, in form of horses, cattle, gems and precious metals. However, he did send his sister to represent him at the wedding, the incredibly beautiful Princess Amphiera.

Other honorable guests were of course Prince Heraklis and his family. It was the first time little Myrrhini was attending publicly, but she seemed more interested in the birds outside than in the wedding ceremony.

The bride's family were also there, even if it was quite a long journey for them, and for that reason little prince Philokratis was left at home. Queen Laonome was not feeling well, it was possible that she was expecting again, so they took a more discreet position in the throne room, to be able to slip out to the private chambers if necessary.

The distinguished ladies of Manthos were all there, of course, and Kyria Figaleía wouldn't miss it for the world.

It truly was a grand celebration, and everybody agreed that it had been a fabulous ceremony.

Except maybe for the bride and groom.

The King's death was unexpected, even with a war going on. The body was to be taken back to the palace, but the men were allowed to give their respects first.

- The King instructed me to convey his gratitude to you, Captain Trypitis told Nashuja. He wanted me to give you some of his valuable stones, his horse Kappa and his sword.

- To me? His horse? The same horse that killed him? What am I going to do with that beast? It's a curse, not a gift, I don't know anything about horses!

- Well it is yours now. It was the King's wish. For your travels, he said And he really loved that horse, even if it killed him I believe he wanted someone to take care of it.

- My travels? Oh. Yes, that makes sense. Okay, I will try my best to honor his wishes. I will take care of the horse. As best I can.

In the beginning Nashuja was intimidated by the size and appearance of Kappa. He was cautious and patient, and made sure to have carrots or apples whenever he approached her.

After some weeks, there was certainly more trust between them.

The war continued, and Nashuja was again fit for fight. The men in general were not as motivated as they had been. The war-weariness probably had to do with the lack of progress. Victory seemed impossible.

Then, about three months after King Ifiklis death, they received the message from the regent; Prince Heraklis. He had made a deal with the enemy. The conditions were harsh, but peace was finally reached. The agreement was formally approved by the new king; the very young King Mijararos I. He was now formally the head of Manthos, but since he was just a child it was of course his uncle who had the real power and authority in the kingdom.

It was a very special day wen the soldiers marched home to Manthos. They weren't overly excited about the agreement Prince Heraklis had made, they felt that he had sold them short. There were rumors that he had betrayed them, his own people. They said he probably was on the enemy's side from the beginning, a renegade. Some even said that the former King had found out about it and confronted him, and that Prince Heraklis then killed his own brother because of it.

The citizens of Manthos were however ecstatic that war was over and that their boys were coming home.

The fight was hard, and Alkides, Nashuja's opponent, was no push-over.

Nashuja's supporters held their breath...

... but once again Nashuja turned the game to his advantage - and was announced as winner!

- Hooray for Nashuja Sharruma!!

- A great match, King Ifiklis stated. Many congratulations! Did I see you before? You seem kind of familiar?

- No Sire, this was my first match.

- Sharruma, you say. So you are the son of...?

- Itaja Sharruma Sire. Itaja and Simadhne Sharruma.

- I see. Well it was a pleasure to meeting you, Nashuja Sharruma. I hope to see you again soon. A great match, like I said.

- Thank you Sire!

- Sharruma… it really is something familiar with that name, but I can't recall... Prince Heraklis mumbled.

- I don't think I've heard it? Princess Konchylia said.

- No, it was probably before your time. Maybe a really long time ago. Oh holy Dias! I think I know who he is, he then whispered, flabbergasted with his own discovery.

- Well? Who is that boy, Herakli?

- I'm not sure, but if my theories are correct... I must discuss it with mother first, then you will be next to know, I promise you.

- I'm happy you are so excited dear.

- Excited may not be the right word, shocked might be closer to the truth. I don't see how we could have missed this.

- I'm not sure if I can help Noor, but I will try. Of course Kyrios Sahphiris is retired now, but we can ask.

- So you think he might consider it, even if there was this "thing" with his daughter and my Teo?

- He is a very honorable person, and his daughter is now engaged elsewhere, so hopefully that wont influence him. I feel for young Lykrevia too, she hasn't had an easy life, so I will do my best to convince him.

- Thank you so much Figaleía. But now to some happier news. It's Areth. She has a good eye to the boy next door, and I was hoping you could help us with the formalities?

- That is good news indeed! Of course I will! Small private wedding? Or something more public?

- You will have to talk with the groom's parents as well of course, but if it is up to me: A big happy wedding party!

- Oh how exciting!

The preparations for the hearing dragged out. The king wanted to attend all the interviews with the council members himself, and not just anyone was selected. Only candidates who had both wealth and knowledge, and who had unassailable morals, were selected.

In the mean while Kyrios Sahphiris had accepted the assignment to represent Lykrevia. Already he had made sure that the conditions were more acceptable, and that Lykrevia, who was still breastfeeding, were able to keep her daughter with her.

One evening Amunet was passing by and she was not happy.

- Noor! You back-stabbing snake! What are you trying to do to me! Destroy my life?!

- Amunet, I'm not doing anything against you...

- But you are! You are helping Aranare's killer! I never believed this about you! How could you!

- Amunet calm down!

- Don't tell me to calm down! You are destroying my family! I can loose everything! Is it that h*re you took in that has poisoned your soul?

- Is it me you are referring to? Mpatíni shouted from the background. How dare you!

- Don't talk about my daughter-in-law like that!

- So you are on her side now are you! Her brother destroyed our family and now she will drag you down to the underground, mind my words!

- I think you should have a good look at your own behavior before you start pointing fingers.

- How could you betray me like this, Noor? I thought you were my friend!

- I am your friend, but I also have to do what I think is fair and just.

- I will never forgive you. NEVER! Πόρνη!

There was a lot of speculation and different opinions in Manthos about the murder. But people were also upset about the new taxes, and the reckless spending by the royal family.

Everybody agreed that the prices at the Agorá was much higher than last year, and then the taxes came on top of that. People were angry and most of them blamed the new queen. Expensive dresses, jewelry, and on top of everything; a brand new temple being built for some foreign god. It was outrageous.

Two weeks after the murder the news hit Manthos like lightning: Lykrevia, Aranares daughter had been arrested for the murder of her own father. It was beyond belief.

Most people, including Prince Heraklis and Captain Trypitis, believed that a swift execution would be the correct way to handle this, but the king insisted on a hearing.

- The girl swear she is innocent, and I'm not convinced she is guilty. We should give her a chance. We will set up a council of ten righteous men, and then see what they decide. Herakli, you will be in charge.

Like everybody else the arrest and the coming hearing were talked about in the Asijaka household.

- That girl was always a bit strange, but do you think she killed her own father Noor?

- I don't know what to think. I do feel sorry for her though. And her child. It's terrible to be accused of something like that, but even worse when you have a child.

- I can only imagine. Maybe they will go lightly on her because of the child?

- I don't know if the council would even consider that. I also heard that Amunet will testify against her. Which is... As much as I love Amunet, her testimony would be biased. She has everything to win on Lykrevia being convicted.

- How so?

- First of all Amunet was pointed at as a possible killer herself, and if Lykrevia is convicted, she is off the hook. And second, she will keep the farm.

- And if Lykrevia is ruled innocent?

- Then the farm will go to Lykrevia as the oldest child, and Amunet would be at her mercy. They might even be homeless. And the investigators might look for other possible killers. Like Amunet. Or even you.

- I would never have done something like that! I hope you believe me?

- I do dear, but the investigators will see that you could have had a reason. I mean, to avenge your brother's death.

- That would be ... Mpatíni swallowed. It would be a nightmare, because nobody in this village would ever believe anything I say. People hated me even before this.

- They don't hate you, but I can see why you feel that way. Let’s hope it never comes to that.

- Nevertheless, I wish we could help Lykrevia, she must be feeling so alone and sad! First losing her boyfriend, then her father, and now this. She could at least need some kind of spokesman.

- She must be terrified. And if she is in fact innocent...

- I wish I knew someone that could help out. Someone that wouldn't judge her from the start.

- I just got an idea. I will talk to Kyria Figaleía in the morning.

- Eh... I...

- Well anyway, as soon as we finish this bloody war there will be changes. I want you to leave tonight, your "advices" will not be needed here anymore. You are a disgrace.

It was also time for goodbyes at the palace.

- Ah, Ifikli my dear. Are you ready to go?

- Yes, mother. You will have to govern things here at home, as you have done before. Heraklis will join me at the front. If something important happens, I'm just a three days ride away.

- Yes of course, dear.

- It's really unfortunate that my brother and I will be at the front at the same time, but the resistance from our enemy is very hard. And Heraklis is an excellent military leader.

- I understand son. We will manage here, don't worry.

- Okay then, I greet you mother. Good luck.

- Episis son, take care.

- Mother, you wanted to see me in private? I am on my way, but ...

- Yes Herakli, it's about the delicate situation you told me about.

- Do we really have to talk about that now? I'm sure it can wait?

- Unfortunately not. Please sit. According to my sources the person in question will be at the front.

- I believe he will, yes.

- It would be very convenient if he did not return from there.

- What?! Are you asking me to kill him?! I can't do that!!

- Well, so many lives get lost these days. Son, I don't expect you to do it yourself. But we both know that some dispositions are more... well, exposed than others.

- That might be so, but to deliberately subject someone to it, that would be cruel. There must be another way.

- You know I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't believe it was absolutely necessary. If you made the connection, it's just a matter of time until someone else might see it as well. And then...

- Even if he doesn't claim a position himself, he might be used. We are surrounded by enemies, as you are well aware of. This would be the safest solution. It's the only solution.

- And if Ifiklis finds out? After all, it is his blood. He might not like it.

- Well, let's hope he wont find out. It would just complicate things. But this would still be the best solution. For the family. For the future.

- It's still grim, mother.

- I trust you to do the right thing, my son.

In the shadows of the old temple, the King, the Prince and the Captain had gathered to discuss strategy for the next days.

- ... so I think we should use him on the left flank, Heraklis argued.

- The boy is physically very strong, do you really think that's the best position for him? King Ifiklis was not convinced. I mean, wouldn't it be wiser to use someone with more speed in that place?

- He is fast enough. Heraklis wasn't ready to give in.

- He is one of our best men, and the flank is risky. It would be a petty to loose him. What do you think Kleomeni?

- Although the Prince is usually right in his strategies, I'm not sure about this one. It seems very risky to me.

- Well, like you say, my brother is usually right in these matters. It's not what I would have chosen, but I'm trusting my brother's expertise.

The next day the fights started again, and Nashuja was keeping the left flank.

It became the most bloody battle so far. Things were not going well for the Manthos men.

Pamesijos had his hands full keeping the enemy at bay.

The officers were not thrilled about the development. There were many reasons for concern.

But for Nashuja it was about to become fateful.

As said, so done. Heraklis went straight to talk to his mother about his suspicions.

- I can't be sure of course, but I remember there were rumors. And there is a resemblance there. So what should we do mother?

- Thank you for bringing this to my attention son, but in this moment I believe we should do nothing.

- Nothing? Are you sure mother?

- The information is not sufficient. We will need to investigate - in a discreet manner of course - and then see what must be done.

- Really?

- Remember, we have not been able to stay in power this long by making rash decisions. Leave this to me. And I trust you not to vent your suspicions to anyone else. This must remain unknown to the public, it is extremely important.

- Of course mother, as you wish.

- This is an awkward situation, the queen thought to herself afterwards. Really troublesome, indeed. I fear that an uttermost decision might be necessary.

Meanwhile, the people of Manthos were preoccupied with the war and the news of the ravages of the Attica gangs. Some thought it best to cooperate with the invaders, others wanted to fight to the last man to protect Manthos' independence.

Opinions were strong, and fronts were steep, and it divided the usually harmonious community.

The king gave order for enrollment of young men, a sure sign that all was not as it should be. Some of them were quite young, some were equipped, some were motivated, but most of them were not. They were given basic military training, and then sent to the front. Many did not come back. It was difficult times.

- Mother, it might not be such a bad idea, Prince Heraklis whispered.

- You can’t mean that, Herakli! I want to slow down your brother’s libido, not kill him!

- I know mother, but this way he can get some real experience, it will do him good, and he don’t have to fight in the battles directly, he can just lead from a distance. And he will come back as a hero.

- Is it something you believe your brother would consider doing voluntarily? The Queen asked, after some thought.

- Yes, I believe so. Ifiklis is well aware that he is not very popular amongst the public, and the limitations that poses to the way he can rule. A chance to be perceived like a hero, I think he would grab it with both hands.

- Then you talk with him Herakli. Preferably in a way that makes him believe it is his own idea. If he leaves, it will buy us some time. If he stays, we will implement the law at the next esembly.

Prince Heraklis didn’t waste any time, and brought up the issue as soon as King Ifiklis was back from his visit to the soldier camp. He had brought Captain Tryptis with him to underline the military facts.

- ... and the army will need some real leadership, he emphasized while counting the swords in the armory, and it would be a true heroic action for Manthos and our future!

- I was thinking to volunteer myself, Heraklis said, I mean, the thought of returning like a true war hero is very alluring. But then I thought I would have to ask you first, just in case you wanted to take charge yourself. I mean, you are the King after all and I wouldn’t stand in your way.

- Hmm. Good thinking. I actually think that I, as the King, should do that. I also have more experience than you, so it is evident really. It will be hard convincing mother and Memilia but...

- I will help you with mother, if you convince your wife.

- Thank you for your support, brother!

A few days later the big buzz at the Agora was that the King himself would go to lead the troops in new battles.

- That was a solution I didn’t see coming, Simadhne said. Can you imagine! Sending your own son to a war...!

- Maybe she felt that she didn’t have a choice? Kyria Figaleía asked rhetorically. It would seem easier just to implement a law, but I don’t know. I can’t figure out how these people think, to be honest.

- What worries me, Sapfo said, is that this doesn’t solve anything for the future. One day he will be back.

- I for my part hope he never comes back. I’m sorry, but that’s honestly how I feel. Noor said with intensity. And now excuse me kyries, I’m going to have a chat with sister, whom I never see anymore.

- Noor, my dear! It’s so good to see you!

- Finally! It’s been too long! I hope you have time for a long chat, because I have so much to tell you!

- Actually I don’t. I’m so sorry! Teterius needs this text by tomorrow you see, and my mother in law is not well, and I just have too much to do! We will catch up later I promise!

A few weeks after the women’s protest Queen Alkmini found the oportunity to assemble the nobel men to a meeting. King Ifiklis was doing an inspection at the soldier’s camp, and would spend the night there.

In deepest secrecy the legal experts, loyal to the Queen, had worked out a new law, now presented to the nobel men.

It said “Young women, at an age ready for marriage, but yet not married, shall, when they are staying in a place not being their own home, and in the hours between sunset and sunrise, always and at all circumstances, be accompanied by an older, male relative or a person appointed by the family for this purpose, if such male relative does not exist.”

After the reading there was a fierce debate.

- This is much too limiting for young women! One of the nobel men pointed out. They will loose their freedom of movement entirely!

- Well no young women should be outside their home after sunset anyway, another said.

The Queen listened to the debate for a while, and then spoke.

- Gentlemen! We all know the background for this purposed law and what problem it is meant to solve. If any of you don’t possess this knowledge, I would be happy to inform you, in private. I realize that this law has it’s shortcomings, but under the circumstances... I don’t want any unpleasant upheavals, and the woman were quite clear - the common men of Manthos are on their side in this matter.

- Maybe if you gave him a warning? Kyrios Rhesus suggested.

- I’m afraid that would be a waste of time, Kyrie Rhesu, the Queen sighed. He’ve had many warnings already. Other suggestions?

- Maybe it would help if he was not at the palace or Manthos for a while? Kyrios Ignacio said cautiously. Until the unrest has calmed down, I mean? And that way we could solve another pressing problem for Manthos at the same time?

- What are you saying? The Queen replied, Please don’t speak in riddles!

- I’m thinking about the situation at the front, Ma’am. There is a desperate need of leadership, I would say.

- What?! The Queen gasped. Are you suggesting I send my son to the battlefield Kyrie Ignacio?

One by one Queen Alkmini and Heraklis had secret talks with the nobel men of Manthos, sometimes even with Princess Laonome participating. She had a talent for public relations.

The Queen discussed her concerns about the new command, and although most of them expressed understanding, very few were willing to give the Queen direct support. “Incompetence is no reason” they said. “He is still the King”.

The Queen made great efforts to keep the conversations hidden, but the big palace had ears and coincidentally one of them were Kyria Figaleía. She found, after arranging three marriages paid for by Itaja, it natural to discuss these things with him.

And as dark clouds gathered on the horizon of Manthos, Itaja went for a visit Figaleía, to discuss the situation and have a game of Nine men's morris.

- I think women are right to protest about the behavior of the King, Itaja said, don’t get me wrong. But do you think the protest could have unforeseen consequences? I really don’t want to make problems for our country...

- Listen, Figaleía said after giving it some thought. The problem is the King, not the country. I believe the best thing would be to send a handful of women to talk with the Queen, as discreetly as possible. And at the same time make sure that they learn that he whole village is behind them. A silent protest, but within the walls of the palace.

- You are quite a strategist, aren’t you! That’s a smart move. However... *clack*, I still don’t think you can beat me at this game. After all you are a woman! Hahaha!

- Oh yes I am a woman... *clack* *clack* *clack* ... and you should never underestimate nor me, nor any other woman! You are out!

- What the flick...?!

After King Radhamanthos‘ death there had been hectic activity at the palace. There were many formalities to be taken care of.

Initially Queen Alkmini was not too pleased with the fact that many of her responsibilities were now taken away from her and given to King Ifiklis and his wife, Queen Memilia. For many years, and especially after King Radhamanthos had become quite old and tired, she had been the de facto head of Manthos.

- I would prefer to hand over the responsibility for those boring political discussions to you mother, King Ifiklis said. After all, you have the experience, and I prefer to spend my time with soldiers, not politicians.

- I would be happy to assist, Queen Alkmini answered.

- A very good idea, Captain Tryptis nodded. Formally we will make you the King’s Regent, to give you the power you need.

However, she had not counted on Queen Memilia's immense ambitions.

- Why should your mother be bothered with all this time consuming politics? Isn’t it better that you, who have such great plans for the future of Manthos and it’s people, take control over that part? And I will assist you of course. Besides, until we have a son, the regent should be your brother, not a woman. Let your mother run the household of the palace, as would be more fitting for her.

- What plans are you talking about? I don’t really have any plans ...

- But we’ve been talking about this Ifikli! You need to show people you are in charge! You want victory over our enemies right? We need more men and funds for the war, and you will have to raise the taxes to make it happen. If the public don’t respect you, it will become very hard to implement!

Queen Alkmini was surprised and annoyed with the new arrangement Ifiklis wanted to introduce.

- Son, you don’t know what you are getting in to! Without my network how are you and your little foreign wife handle the complicated politics of Manthos? You know very well your brother is much too young for this task. I think you will sincerely regret this.

- Herakli, your brother and his foolish wife wants to make you the regent.

- Me? But, but ... I have no idea how to be a regent!

- I trust you will listen carefully to my advice my son. You will accept the task, and then do exactly what I tell you. If this doesn’t go well, the consequences could be very serious for our country and for our family. We could be heading for a disaster.

- What should I do, mother?

- First of all you don’t do anything without checking with me. Manthos’ future is the most important thing, and that terrible woman has a bad influence over your brother, and I really don’t trust her. I told your father that marriage was a terrible mistake. But, until we find a more permanent solution, we will just have to play along.

The same thing repeated every night. The prince came to watch the practice.

Followed by the nightly visits, that made her feel very uncomfortable, but seemed unavoidable.

Finally the day had come. The King was sitting on the throne, and the whole Royal family and prominent guests from the area expected to be entertained.

Noor had been dressed up in expensive garments and precious jewelry, but didn’t feel any enjoyment.

Back at Manthos Palace spring was finally on it's way after hard and long winter.

The royal family had gathered in the small throne room to receive visitors from far and wide, and to enjoy some musical entertainment.

- If you allow me, Prince Heraklis said to his nephew, I really think you should think twice about this marriage. You know it's against mother's wishes, it will cost us a fortune to pay off the King Turunusemis, that greedy bastard, and last, but not least: Princess Euthalia is not known for her modesty. She is high maintenance and very stubborn, just like her mother. I don't think you will find her very attractive.
