The hearing was long overdue and people in Manthos was starting to wonder what was going on. Was Lykrevia going to be behind bars forever? Meanwhile, daily life continued. And for Noor and the family the most important thing was to settle the formalities concerning Areth and Epiktetos' wedding.

These things were never as easy as one might think, so Noor was grateful that she had the support of Figaleía. But in the end they all agreed, and even if the dowry was a bit higher than Noor had hoped for, she was really happy with the arrangements.

The wedding was a success, but not without a tiny bit of drama.

Lysistrate, the groom's twin sister hadn't showed up. The groom's mother suggested they should start without her. That did not go down well.

Epiktetos fell into tears, mumbling that he wouldn't get married without his sister there, and the atmosphere became nervous and tensed. Luckily Myrto decided to grab everybody's attention, and did a bride's silly walk performance while they were waiting.

Finally Lyisistrate and her husband arrived, embarrassed and sorry, but as they explained later; when you have newborn twins, sometimes things doesn't go as planned.

With everyone present the young couple tied the knot, and Areth became Kyria Pseftikh.

An evening a few days after the wedding Kyria Figaleía paid Noor a visit.

- I think it was very successful, wouldn't you agree?

- It was flawless, it was a lovely ceremony and the reception was also delightful. Thank you so much Figaleía.

- I notice that your friend Amunet didn't come.

- To be honest I didn't expect her to, after all that's happened. I'm disappointed she wasn't there, but it didn't take away the magic. Maybe it was just as well that she didn't come.

- I believe you are right Noor. Unfortunately. Life is not always easy. Which brings me to something I wanted to discuss with you.

- Yes?

- I haven't been feeling well lately. And I was hoping that you or your family would be able to assist me with certain things in the house. If I don't get better. You will be richly rewarded.

- But of course! No reward needed, I would be happy to help.

- I'm planning to leave my house to you, Noor. When I'm gone there isn't anybody else.

- Hopefully it will be a long time to come. And it's way too much of course, I'm sure I don't deserve it, but if that's what you want to do I respect it.

- Just please take care of the cats...

- Of course! But Figaleía, didn't you tell me you had a brother? Maybe he would be interested in the house? And for sure he would want to see you if you are not feeling well?

- I do have a brother, Yousif, but we haven't spoken in ages. I don't know why, it's the distance probably. I think he is in Kastanea now, that's the last thing I heard. I don't know anyone there, so...

- Well, I think maybe Teteriu gave lectures there. I remember, because it was such a long journey, and Eira was worried about him. I can ask Eira tomorrow if she, or Mezamura maybe, still have contacts there.

- That would mean so much to me. If I could see him again before I ... Thank you for your efforts Noor.

- I'm not sure if I can help Noor, but I will try. Of course Kyrios Sahphiris is retired now, but we can ask.

- So you think he might consider it, even if there was this "thing" with his daughter and my Teo?

- He is a very honorable person, and his daughter is now engaged elsewhere, so hopefully that wont influence him. I feel for young Lykrevia too, she hasn't had an easy life, so I will do my best to convince him.

- Thank you so much Figaleía. But now to some happier news. It's Areth. She has a good eye to the boy next door, and I was hoping you could help us with the formalities?

- That is good news indeed! Of course I will! Small private wedding? Or something more public?

- You will have to talk with the groom's parents as well of course, but if it is up to me: A big happy wedding party!

- Oh how exciting!

The preparations for the hearing dragged out. The king wanted to attend all the interviews with the council members himself, and not just anyone was selected. Only candidates who had both wealth and knowledge, and who had unassailable morals, were selected.

In the mean while Kyrios Sahphiris had accepted the assignment to represent Lykrevia. Already he had made sure that the conditions were more acceptable, and that Lykrevia, who was still breastfeeding, were able to keep her daughter with her.

One evening Amunet was passing by and she was not happy.

- Noor! You back-stabbing snake! What are you trying to do to me! Destroy my life?!

- Amunet, I'm not doing anything against you...

- But you are! You are helping Aranare's killer! I never believed this about you! How could you!

- Amunet calm down!

- Don't tell me to calm down! You are destroying my family! I can loose everything! Is it that h*re you took in that has poisoned your soul?

- Is it me you are referring to? Mpatíni shouted from the background. How dare you!

- Don't talk about my daughter-in-law like that!

- So you are on her side now are you! Her brother destroyed our family and now she will drag you down to the underground, mind my words!

- I think you should have a good look at your own behavior before you start pointing fingers.

- How could you betray me like this, Noor? I thought you were my friend!

- I am your friend, but I also have to do what I think is fair and just.

- I will never forgive you. NEVER! Πόρνη!

There was a lot of speculation and different opinions in Manthos about the murder. But people were also upset about the new taxes, and the reckless spending by the royal family.

Everybody agreed that the prices at the Agorá was much higher than last year, and then the taxes came on top of that. People were angry and most of them blamed the new queen. Expensive dresses, jewelry, and on top of everything; a brand new temple being built for some foreign god. It was outrageous.

Two weeks after the murder the news hit Manthos like lightning: Lykrevia, Aranares daughter had been arrested for the murder of her own father. It was beyond belief.

Most people, including Prince Heraklis and Captain Trypitis, believed that a swift execution would be the correct way to handle this, but the king insisted on a hearing.

- The girl swear she is innocent, and I'm not convinced she is guilty. We should give her a chance. We will set up a council of ten righteous men, and then see what they decide. Herakli, you will be in charge.

Like everybody else the arrest and the coming hearing were talked about in the Asijaka household.

- That girl was always a bit strange, but do you think she killed her own father Noor?

- I don't know what to think. I do feel sorry for her though. And her child. It's terrible to be accused of something like that, but even worse when you have a child.

- I can only imagine. Maybe they will go lightly on her because of the child?

- I don't know if the council would even consider that. I also heard that Amunet will testify against her. Which is... As much as I love Amunet, her testimony would be biased. She has everything to win on Lykrevia being convicted.

- How so?

- First of all Amunet was pointed at as a possible killer herself, and if Lykrevia is convicted, she is off the hook. And second, she will keep the farm.

- And if Lykrevia is ruled innocent?

- Then the farm will go to Lykrevia as the oldest child, and Amunet would be at her mercy. They might even be homeless. And the investigators might look for other possible killers. Like Amunet. Or even you.

- I would never have done something like that! I hope you believe me?

- I do dear, but the investigators will see that you could have had a reason. I mean, to avenge your brother's death.

- That would be ... Mpatíni swallowed. It would be a nightmare, because nobody in this village would ever believe anything I say. People hated me even before this.

- They don't hate you, but I can see why you feel that way. Let’s hope it never comes to that.

- Nevertheless, I wish we could help Lykrevia, she must be feeling so alone and sad! First losing her boyfriend, then her father, and now this. She could at least need some kind of spokesman.

- She must be terrified. And if she is in fact innocent...

- I wish I knew someone that could help out. Someone that wouldn't judge her from the start.

- I just got an idea. I will talk to Kyria Figaleía in the morning.

- Of course Kyria mou! Have you heard the tragic news? About the murder?

- Murder?!

- Who was murdered? Here in Manthos?

- It was Kyrios Troizenas. They don't know who did it yet. His wife found him this morning.

- Kyrios Troizenas?! Aranare?! That can't be! Who would want to hurt him? Holy Astanna! I can't believe this is happening!

- Yes it's shocking. Maybe his wife killed him? Apparently she found him this morning, but he was dead. Stabbed with a knife. I didn't believe it myself at first, but then the king's guards confirmed it. Here are your goods, Kyria Eira.

- This can't be true Eira! Maybe Kyrios Vrentésios is exaggerating, and there is some logical explanation. And I don't believe for a moment that Amunet killed Aranare. That's ridiculous.

- I don't know Noor. It was unbelievable that Aranare fought with Olimáchos too, wasn't it? And now this.

- My Goddess, you are right.

- You don't think Mpatíni could have anything to do with it do you?

- Mpatini?! Of course not! Are you out of your mind?

- For it sure it can't be Amunet, and who else ...

- Absolutely not! I don't believe it for a moment!

- Poor Amunet. And the children!

- This is terrible. And the day started so well...

It was not easy coming home telling Mpatíni what had happened. Noor did her best to put on a neutral face. She didn't want the girl to suspect that she doubted her innocence.

- What?! He more or less killed my brother, but murder? That's terrible! Who killed him?

- They don't know yet. He was well liked by most, so ...

- I see. Oh Noor, do you think that people might think it was me?

- Nah, Noor tried to sound convincing, people are not that stupid, I'm sure.

Spring had arrived in Manthos. The nights were still cold, but during the day the sunbeams insisted that summer was coming.

Areth had stopped taking classes, and had found a small job at one of the stalls at the agorá. She had became more responsible and calm this winter, although she was still entertaining the family with unbelievable and funny stories. One morning she approached her mother with some important news.

- You know mother, I've been thinking about what to do with the rest of my life.

- Yes?

- I know many girls my age are already married. And I now that Mpatíni is helping you with the garden and house and everything, maybe I'm not so needed here, and ...

- You will always be needed here sweetheart.

- Okay, yeah, I know but, I also thought that, maybe, in some ways, it could be nice to start something of my own, because, well, it's the thing people do, right?

- You still have time Areth, Noor had an uneasy feeling of what was coming, so there is no need to rush things.

- That's true, but, but ...

- Areth, what is it you are not saying?

- It's not that... Okay, so you know are neighbors?

- The Pséftikos family? Of course I know them! What do you mean?

- Well you know Epiktetos? I kind of like him.

- Epiktetos?! Areth, you are full of surprises! I thought you hated each other? You always complained about him teasing you?

- He did! But we've grown up since then! We were actually hoping to get engaged. Unless you disapprove, I don't want to upset you like Teo did...

- Areth, I'm thrilled! This is great news! And let me just say, even with Teo it turned out well in the end, didn't it? Oh, I can't wait to tell Eira! Who thought you would get married before Khará and Bansabira!

- Sister! You will never guess what has happened!

- Is it bad news or good news?

- Good!!

- Then I will probably not be able to guess it, hehe! What is it?

- It's Areth! She will get married to the boy next door!

- Seriously?! That's great news! She will be living next door to you then? Oh how wonderful Noor! When will the wedding be?

- It's no rush if you know what I mean, so I thought I would ask Kyria Figaleía to handle the discussions with his parents, hopefully the dowry wont be too high. Also I wanted to ask you if you are okay with Areth getting married before Khará?

- Of course! No reason to wait for a wedding with my two girls, they are married to philosophy, just like their father. Maybe they will stay unmarried their whole life, and then I will never have grandchildren!

- I'm sure they will find someone soon. What does Kyria Figaleía say?

- She says she can't find any suitable candidates in Manthos. And those girls are very picky, so I don't know. But I'm truly happy for Areth!

- Yes, me too. Now let's go to the baker and give him something to talk about!

- Yeah, I could really need some bread and some gossip!

The agreement was made, and the wedding became expensive, just as Queen Alkmini had predicted. There were many prominent guests, and even the big throne room filled up.

The bride and groom didn't seem overjoyed, but perhaps they were affected by the seriousness of the moment.

The King of Koiláda Chalkoú was invited but did not come to the wedding. He was probably still a bit crossed, even though he had received a handsome compensation, in form of horses, cattle, gems and precious metals. However, he did send his sister to represent him at the wedding, the incredibly beautiful Princess Amphiera.

Other honorable guests were of course Prince Heraklis and his family. It was the first time little Myrrhini was attending publicly, but she seemed more interested in the birds outside than in the wedding ceremony.

The bride's family were also there, even if it was quite a long journey for them, and for that reason little prince Philokratis was left at home. Queen Laonome was not feeling well, it was possible that she was expecting again, so they took a more discreet position in the throne room, to be able to slip out to the private chambers if necessary.

The distinguished ladies of Manthos were all there, of course, and Kyria Figaleía wouldn't miss it for the world.

It truly was a grand celebration, and everybody agreed that it had been a fabulous ceremony.

Except maybe for the bride and groom.

Back at Manthos Palace spring was finally on it's way after hard and long winter.

The royal family had gathered in the small throne room to receive visitors from far and wide, and to enjoy some musical entertainment.

- If you allow me, Prince Heraklis said to his nephew, I really think you should think twice about this marriage. You know it's against mother's wishes, it will cost us a fortune to pay off the King Turunusemis, that greedy bastard, and last, but not least: Princess Euthalia is not known for her modesty. She is high maintenance and very stubborn, just like her mother. I don't think you will find her very attractive.

- Uncle, you know these arrangements are not made for romantic reasons. It's purely practical. It doesn't matter how I feel about her as a person.

- It's not her personal suitability that makes me worried, the Queen cut in, but how this situation has impact on the political situation. It definitely is not ideal that King Turunusemis is annoyed with us. This should have been handled in a more thoughtful way. I am very disappointed you didn't take my advise Mijarare.

- I'm sorry grandmother, but..

- Sorry is superfluous, but you have to do better if you are to avoid these situations.

- Yes, grandma Alkmini, the King sighed.

- And how do you plan to pay for it all? We are already behind because of the new temple you are building. Then it's the pay-off, and the wedding itself must have a certain standard. It will be expensive.

- The trade agreements with Oasis Springs are a success, and very profitable in terms of customs duties and taxes.

- Mijarare, with all respect, that's just peanuts. We will have to cut back on expenses for a while. And probably sell some land.

- A lovely performance dear! Queen Alkmini said to the girl who had just performed the lovely tune "Dolphins stole my heart".

- Yes, yes, very interesting, King Mijararos murmured.

- You are just praying for this concert to end, aren't you? Prince Heraklis whispered. I bet you just can't wait to get back to training with your soldier-mates, am I right?

- Spot on, uncle, the King whispered back. Honestly, these song and dance performances are so boring! I really can't understand why my father loved them so much.

- Haha, no I bet you can't! In some ways you are very different from your father, that's for sure. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Many people think he was all perfect since he was our king, but he had some really strange obsessions and very special interests, I can tell you that!

The King of Manthos, the young Mijararos, had payed a friendly visit to King of Selinódasos, the wealthy King Akrísios, who was also married to Mijaros' aunt, Queen Laonome. This was a courtesy visit, but with an agenda. They had an important issue to discuss: To strengthen the ties between the two kingdoms through an agreement on marriage.

When seeing his potential wife, King Mijararos was quite startled.

- But she is still a child! I don't think this is a good idea.

- Well, you knew her age already, didn't you? She is almost ten winters.

- When grandmother said "marry your cousin" I didn't realize she meant Princess Nikh. I always assumed she meant Princess Euthalia. This is not what I had prepared for.

- Princess Euthalia is already spoken for. We have already made an agreement with the Kingdom of Koiláda Chalkoú.

- I don't mind cousin Mijarare, Nikh said, I know you will be a kind husband. And also grandma and uncle Heraklis will be there, so I'm not afraid.

- Thank you for that, Nikh my dear, but it's not that easy. There are expectations that you simply can't fill.

- There would be a long period of engagement of course, at least three winters. The important thing now is the agreement, not the fulfillment.

- I hear you uncle, and I respect that, but I ... I just can't. The age difference bothers me, and it will probably do so for many years. The gap is too large. I'm sorry, I will just have to decline.

- Mother will not be pleased, Laonome said. The whole family will be so disappointed.

- It can't be helped aunt Laonome, this is impossible. I will have to look for a wife elsewhere I'm afraid.

- Is it my fault cousin Mijarare? Am I too ugly? You don't love me?

- Of course I love you! Just not in a husband-and-wife-way, okay? Besides, you are the prettiest girl in the whole kingdom and any young man will be proud to marry you, as soon as you get a bit older.

- I'm really sorry uncle. But might I suggest that you consider my brother Linos for Nikh? They are closer in age, and he is second to the throne.

- I was hoping for a more prestigious marriage, so I don't know. It's not what I had planned for my daughter. This is most unfortunate.

- My men! Laonome cut in. We must be able to solve this somehow.

- I don't see how, Mijararos answered.

- Not me neither, Akrisios agreed.

- Dear nephew, would you consider marrying Euthalia, if she wasn't spoken for?

- I would. We are about the same age at least.

- So if we can reach an agreement with the King of Koiláda Chalkoú to let her go, would we have an agreement? Even if the dowry would be lower?

- Why should it be lower?

- Because we would have to offer something to the King of Koiláda Chalkoú. As a compensation.

- Do you think he would be willing to discuss it?

- It's worth a try.

- And Euthalia, how would she feel about it, would she consider living at Manthos palace?

- Oh, absolutely. She wasn't very keen on going to Koiláda Chalkoú, that's for sure. She's been sulking for weeks now.

- Ironically, that sounds promising. So maybe we have an agreement then?

- Provided the King of Koiláda Chalkoú agrees; yes!

- When I come home, Mijararos added, I will suggest that the house of Manthos and grandmother assists with the compensation, just to make sure he will think it's worth it.

- You make it sound so easy, Laonome laughed.

- What?

- "I will suggest that grandmother assists". That woman is not known for accepting any suggestions easily. Unless it's in her interest.

- It's just a matter of making her realizing just that, it is in her interest. I know what I will have to do.

This is the forth and last map I've made for The First Ones story: The Komorebi continent.

The story hasn't arrived in these lands yet, but they will in the future, so I thought it would be nice to have it ready.

Since I get better by doing, this map is probably the one I'm most proud of, even if it's not perfect. Please have a closer look here.

You might have been led to believe that Manthos could be placed somewhere on this map, but that is not so. Manthos, as it was in the time of Noor and the other in my story The First Ones, is to be placed on the map above, passed down by oral narratives and recorded from memory several generations later.

- I don't know if the girl knows or not, but you will never guess who attacked him!

- Well tell me! Who?

- They told me that Olimáchos had a thing with Lykrevia Troizena, and that Lykrevia's father was very upset about it and beat him up. Badly. Some say he might not survive, but I'm sure they're exaggerating.

- Lykrevia's father did that? Aranare? Amunet's husband?

- Yes! Can you believe it?

- Holy Astanna! Who would have thought ... I'm shocked...

- The situation for Mpatíni will be even more difficult now that her brother can't protect her. Even if it's temporary. At the moment he can't even stand on his feet they say. And if he dies...

- Oh no! This is terrible news! Well that's it. I can't let this happen. The girl will move in here. As Teo's wife to be.

- Are you sure Noor? People might talk.

- Oh, I'm sure they will. People will always talk. In the past it used to be me they were talking about. And Mpatíni doesn't deserve it, she is a nice girl and didn't do nothing wrong. Eira, will you support me? Will you stand by me? And Teo and his wife?

- Of course Noor. Always. You are my sister. And I feel for the girl as well, I never understood why people were so mean to her.

- I can always count on you Eira. Thank you. And now we will have a wedding to plan, I guess! I bet you didn't see that coming when you came over for a tea and a chat!

- I sure didn't haha!

It was Teo that got to brake the news to Mpatíni, both the good news and the bad news. The circumstances may not have been ideal, but the young couple were very happy to be able to tie the knot.

Just a few months later they got married. Spring was on it's way, but it was still cold when the young couple had a simple home marriage. Mpatíni was looking very pretty (but a bit cold) in a dress Noor and Eira had remade from one of Simadhne's dresses, and with a beautiful braid made by Areth and Bansabira.

It was of course unusual to have a wedding at this time of the year, and there were not many guests outside the family. Mpatínis brother was still not well after the fight with Aranare, but was helped, or should we say carried, to the house to be able to attend.

Kyria Figaleía had politely declined at first, but changed her mind when Noor and Eira hinted that they soon would have to discuss the marriages for three young ladies: Areth, Khará and Bansabira. The presence of Kyria Figaleía was very important, especially for the bride, because no one could turn the tide of public opinion like Kyria Figaleía.

It was a smart move, and a successful one. When the summer came, nobody talked about Mpatíni anymore. Despite of (or perhaps precisely because of) the fact that her brother Olimáchos never recovered from his injuries after his unpleasant encounter with Aranare. A few weeks after his sister's wedding his condition worsened, and he past away. And fingers pointed at Aranare.

Everyone was sure that Aranare had killed him, but there was no way to prove it. Nevertheless, he had to pay a heavy price. It turned out that Lykrevia secretly had married Olimáchos and she was also with child. Now she refused to have anything to do with her father, and survived by picking fruit and olives around Manthos, as her husband had previously done. Evil tongues meant she was also becoming a bit insane, but, you know, people have always had something to say about single mothers.

Anyway, on this winter night, after Mpatíni and Teo's wedding, it was all peace and happiness. And maybe, (well we don't know this for sure, but we can speculate, right?) just maybe, the foundation for a new generation of Asijakas were laid, just this night.

And Noor was right, life did become easier. Eira and her children found a new rhythm without Teteriu. As time went on there were fewer moments of deep grief, and more moments of enjoyment.

Khará and Bansabira, now both teenagers, were very different as persons, but had a good relationship between them. Khará took more after her father, she loved philosophy and analysis, and was calm and collected, you might even perceive her as a bit cold. Bansabira on the other hand, had her mother's emotional and artistic temper. She also wanted to pursue a academic career, but her true passion was in art.

Polykarpos, the "baby", was the one who could make them all laugh, even in difficult times. He was often teased by his older sisters, but he usually managed to tease them right back. Eira always said that he always reminded her of her brother Toidr.

- Was he funny mother?

- He was the funniest person in the whole village, Polykarpe! He was everybody's favorite!

- Just like me!

At the Asijaka household things were also going well, relatively speaking. Like everybody else in Manthos they were surprised with the snow that winter, but thanks to Noor's knitting skills, at least all the children were provided with warm clothes.

Noor's biggest headache however, was not how to keep her children warm, but how to stop the constant bickering and fights.

- Astanna have mercy on me, she complained to Eira, I don't see nothing but sour faces from morning to night. Not a smile, no kindness, no rest. Who raised these kids?!

- Haha, they seem perfectly normal to me?

- Normal? Well, maybe when they are with other people, but if I leave them alone I swear they would try to kill each other.

- I'm sure you're exaggerating Noor, it can't be that bad?

- But it is! And Phaidros and Areth, who are older and should be an example to the others, they are the worst! It starts with just teasing or pranks, but then it escalates to vicious fights and screaming and shouting, and the whole neighborhood gathers to see what's going on!

- My Goddess...

- And the younger ones take after them! Tychon has just figured out how to fill Myrto's dress with snow, and she screams of course. I really have to do something.

- What are you thinking to do?

- I don't know! I don't know if it can be stopped by anything but growing up.

- If it helps, I understand completely. I have children too.

- Pfff. Your's are angels compared to mine. Jokes aside, I am actually considering finding a husband for Areth, but I'm torn. She is a now a young woman, but .... this marrying children away is not easy, I'm sure you agree. I have to make sure it's a respectable family, and also that the marriage is something she wants. You know, I don't want to create a new situation like the one with Teo.

- What is happening with that, Noor? Is his heart still set on that girl?

- It is. And I don't fight it. Mpatíni is not a bad person, and not a floozy like the gossipers try to make her. She has proven herself to me this year, she really has. I just want him to be a little bit older. I mean, Teo is still in his teens.

- So you didn't hear the latest news?

- What news? About Mpatíni?

- No about her brother, apparently he was attacked yesterday.

- He was attacked? That's terrible! By whom? What happened? Does Mpatíni know?
