The agreement was made, and the wedding became expensive, just as Queen Alkmini had predicted. There were many prominent guests, and even the big throne room filled up.

The bride and groom didn't seem overjoyed, but perhaps they were affected by the seriousness of the moment.

The King of Koiláda Chalkoú was invited but did not come to the wedding. He was probably still a bit crossed, even though he had received a handsome compensation, in form of horses, cattle, gems and precious metals. However, he did send his sister to represent him at the wedding, the incredibly beautiful Princess Amphiera.

Other honorable guests were of course Prince Heraklis and his family. It was the first time little Myrrhini was attending publicly, but she seemed more interested in the birds outside than in the wedding ceremony.

The bride's family were also there, even if it was quite a long journey for them, and for that reason little prince Philokratis was left at home. Queen Laonome was not feeling well, it was possible that she was expecting again, so they took a more discreet position in the throne room, to be able to slip out to the private chambers if necessary.

The distinguished ladies of Manthos were all there, of course, and Kyria Figaleía wouldn't miss it for the world.

It truly was a grand celebration, and everybody agreed that it had been a fabulous ceremony.

Except maybe for the bride and groom.

The King's death was unexpected, even with a war going on. The body was to be taken back to the palace, but the men were allowed to give their respects first.

- The King instructed me to convey his gratitude to you, Captain Trypitis told Nashuja. He wanted me to give you some of his valuable stones, his horse Kappa and his sword.

- To me? His horse? The same horse that killed him? What am I going to do with that beast? It's a curse, not a gift, I don't know anything about horses!

- Well it is yours now. It was the King's wish. For your travels, he said And he really loved that horse, even if it killed him I believe he wanted someone to take care of it.

- My travels? Oh. Yes, that makes sense. Okay, I will try my best to honor his wishes. I will take care of the horse. As best I can.

In the beginning Nashuja was intimidated by the size and appearance of Kappa. He was cautious and patient, and made sure to have carrots or apples whenever he approached her.

After some weeks, there was certainly more trust between them.

The war continued, and Nashuja was again fit for fight. The men in general were not as motivated as they had been. The war-weariness probably had to do with the lack of progress. Victory seemed impossible.

Then, about three months after King Ifiklis death, they received the message from the regent; Prince Heraklis. He had made a deal with the enemy. The conditions were harsh, but peace was finally reached. The agreement was formally approved by the new king; the very young King Mijararos I. He was now formally the head of Manthos, but since he was just a child it was of course his uncle who had the real power and authority in the kingdom.

It was a very special day wen the soldiers marched home to Manthos. They weren't overly excited about the agreement Prince Heraklis had made, they felt that he had sold them short. There were rumors that he had betrayed them, his own people. They said he probably was on the enemy's side from the beginning, a renegade. Some even said that the former King had found out about it and confronted him, and that Prince Heraklis then killed his own brother because of it.

The citizens of Manthos were however ecstatic that war was over and that their boys were coming home.

Nashuja was well established at the front. His physical strength made him superior in close combat, and until now he was, thanks Astanna, unharmed.

The evening Pamesijos arrived at the camp, the men had a well deserved rest at the outskirts of the battlefield, close to the burnt down temple.

- Cousin Pamesijo! Welcome!

- Cousin Nashuja! Are you hurt? You are full of blood?

- No, no, don't worry. It's not my blood!

- Aha! So you have been fighting? Where is the enemy?

- They are holding their position behind that little hill. We are probably not going to see them until tomorrow morning. That's how it's been the last few days.

- Okay, I'm here to fight you know!

- You don't know what you wish for. It's not a game.

And Nashuja was right of course. The next morning the enemy was back. And they were a vicious bunch.

- Εμπρός!! Εμπρός!! Forward!! Captain Trypitis shouted.

Pamesijos was in the back row, and his enthusiasm waned as the strain and fear set in.

Slowly, but surely, the reality of war dawned on him. It was brutal.

In the shadows of the old temple, the King, the Prince and the Captain had gathered to discuss strategy for the next days.

- ... so I think we should use him on the left flank, Heraklis argued.

- The boy is physically very strong, do you really think that's the best position for him? King Ifiklis was not convinced. I mean, wouldn't it be wiser to use someone with more speed in that place?

- He is fast enough. Heraklis wasn't ready to give in.

- He is one of our best men, and the flank is risky. It would be a petty to loose him. What do you think Kleomeni?

- Although the Prince is usually right in his strategies, I'm not sure about this one. It seems very risky to me.

- Well, like you say, my brother is usually right in these matters. It's not what I would have chosen, but I'm trusting my brother's expertise.

The next day the fights started again, and Nashuja was keeping the left flank.

It became the most bloody battle so far. Things were not going well for the Manthos men.

Pamesijos had his hands full keeping the enemy at bay.

The officers were not thrilled about the development. There were many reasons for concern.

But for Nashuja it was about to become fateful.

As said, so done. Heraklis went straight to talk to his mother about his suspicions.

- I can't be sure of course, but I remember there were rumors. And there is a resemblance there. So what should we do mother?

- Thank you for bringing this to my attention son, but in this moment I believe we should do nothing.

- Nothing? Are you sure mother?

- The information is not sufficient. We will need to investigate - in a discreet manner of course - and then see what must be done.

- Really?

- Remember, we have not been able to stay in power this long by making rash decisions. Leave this to me. And I trust you not to vent your suspicions to anyone else. This must remain unknown to the public, it is extremely important.

- Of course mother, as you wish.

- This is an awkward situation, the queen thought to herself afterwards. Really troublesome, indeed. I fear that an uttermost decision might be necessary.

Meanwhile, the people of Manthos were preoccupied with the war and the news of the ravages of the Attica gangs. Some thought it best to cooperate with the invaders, others wanted to fight to the last man to protect Manthos' independence.

Opinions were strong, and fronts were steep, and it divided the usually harmonious community.

The king gave order for enrollment of young men, a sure sign that all was not as it should be. Some of them were quite young, some were equipped, some were motivated, but most of them were not. They were given basic military training, and then sent to the front. Many did not come back. It was difficult times.

ELDER: Retirement was never on Kleomenis’ agenda, but the truth is the sudden death of his wife, and the Tartosa war, did age him. After all, some of those men from the enemy’s side could be distant relatives. A terrible situation. His loyalty was with the Manthos King though, no doubt about it. But it was hard.

ADULT: He is an immigrant from the mainland, a well-trained and experienced soldier, who got tired of fighting in various small and large wars. He had hoped that Manthos was a peaceful corner of the world, but soon realized that wherever there is more than one human there will not be long lasting peace.

He holds a trusted position at court, but is often frustrated with all the nonsense and many intrigues. He is however loyal to the King, and performs his duties without any second thoughts.
