Damn I can't believe Sam Deats read my journal and made Castlevania Nocturne specifically for me with everything I could have wanted from a Rondo/Symphony story but like

Oh my GOD??????????

Olrox getting main billing after being my favorite one-off villain with one (1) boss fight with no build-up and never reappearing, they were really like "yeah let's make him the hottest motherfucker in the world and make him even cooler while we're at it"

Richter and Maria's character designs are 😘👌 perfection! I loved how Maria had her classic hairdo with her nightgown too and watching Richter put the bandana on for the first time with goddamn "Divine Bloodlines" playing like????

And Richter doing the Grand Cross??? And his flame whip????? The 1000 blades technique against the marquis?????? Maria using so many of her animal friends and caring so much about each of them sweet child oh my goodness

Not to mention the way I screamed louder for Juste than Alucard bc let's be real baby vampire boy was always going to come back but I had NO faith that they would even look at my boy JB and especially Maxim?? Even in passing I'm so touched holy shit. And I see that red coat on the foot of his bed, I know my angry grandpa's coming back 👀👀

But speaking of Alucard I adore this redesign, the little cravat telling me they're at least trying to give him his Symphony look instead of the t-shirt in the last show is a nice touch but that porcelain doll look is killer and I'm all here for it 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Also everything about Annette oh my lord?? Giving her anything besides just being a damsel in distress like before but everything about her backstory had me on the edge of my seat and I LOVED watching her trap the plantation owner in a cage before the end

Loved getting to see Countess Bathory since we're never getting a Bloodlines anime, the succubus who took me way too long to realize she wasn't just a unique vampire like I had every clue thrown in my face from the fit to the nails and she even admitted to haunting men's dreams and I didn't figure it out til the second she grew wings 😭 glad Alucard still got to finish her off but I'm sad we probably won't get that scene with Lisa again (which probably wouldn't happen since Drac isn't back anyway so there wouldn't be much point)

Can I just talk about Olrox some more bc like??? This guy had NOTHING before the show, he was a fuckin Nosferatu reference and now they gave him all this history, they kept all of his abilities and the dragon transformation?? Plus the beautiful purple and gold suit and those piercing green eyes I love one (1) man and its this fucker I need WAY more of him next time around 👀👀👀👀👀

And yes absolutely I'm excited for next time, we're picking up right where Rondo starts, Father Abbott as a stand-in for Shaft and Tera immediately being turned, the city about to burn like? Are we gonna see Death again?? Do we get to watch Richter fight the Behemoth next season? Is Abbott going to totally lose his mind and bring back Dracula to stop Bathory? Since Alucard is here from the start and not after a time skip do we get to see the Inverted Castle? We already got so much that I would have called a million to one chance but anything's possible now we are SO back baybeeeee

The WIP Questionaire

Thanks so so much from @verba-writing for the tag! I had such a fun time reading your answers too and I'm very excited for paranormal romance 😍

I feel like I wanna flag that a lot of my answers are very anime/gaming-sphere oriented and I hope I'm not totally alienating my mutuals by revealing just HOW MUCH I'm not a book person lololol But this is with what we're working:

The Questions are:

1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?

The very first thing I made was the high premise: It was synthesized from the Overly Sarcastic Productions question "What if all the Kings Under the Mountain came back...?" and then I added the context "...in a Nuclear Crisis to discuss piece?" And in my head, it was this HBO-style modern fantasy Game of Thrones meets West Wing type deal. But then... I didn't want to write the modern piece. (The modern piece should be written by people in countries from all over Europe about what it means to be a hero in various cultures.)

So I set it in 1800s fantasy world instead!

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

The first arc would be Dance in the Game by Zaq

The second arc would be Lacrimosa by Kalafina

The Gods' Arc would be Paper Boquet by Mili

3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?

Is it to cliché to be like "my current self-insert protagonist is my favorite character I've ever made"? Her and my antagonist are just THE BEST and I love them.

4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?

Mmm, I think Untitled Yssaia Game's story would appeal to queer Game of Thrones fans who could FEEL the straightness in GoT, especially if they also like anime. I would hope I could get general anime fans as well as Arcane and Genshin Impact fans, but I feel like those are too mainstream and Yssaia is not. Realistically, I think I'm gonna get the Wadanohara people and the Ib people and, if I get really lucky, the To the Moon people.

5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?

Marketing lol -- explaining what it is to people in a way that they realize they want it.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

Fuafua 🥺🥺🥺

Look at her! She is a six-legged, six-eyed slug cat called a Maret. Marets fill the same role as ocelots in Yssaia, except they're more semi-aquatic like otters and their skin has a stressball-like texture.

7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)

They walk or ride Rumateurs (which are alpaca-like beings with ossicones) or take ships or airships or trains. I don't like writing about travel that much though so it is a background element.

8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?

I am pre-editing the first arc for my alpha readers and the third arc has another 50k to 100k words to draft. We're at like 250k words total right now and it is so unwieldy 😭😭😭

9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?

Oh, I have a convenient graphic for this. Hang on...

10. What are your hopes for your wip?

I was just diatribing about this earlier but the DREAM is to turn it into an RPGmaker adventure game and have it go viral and make a million bucks off it. I'd love to be the next Undertale but it'll never happen because I am not positioned to be the next Undertale, you know?

Plotbunny AU 5 - WELCOME BACK TO BEACON, LOVEBIRDS

(And we're back to this nonsense. Let's go, this world ain't gonna fix itself)

Come the day of Beacon's semester starting, Jaune gets to work being everyone's brother figure, while Alyx decides to get to know Jaune's siblings, her rivals for his hugs, his crush, friends.

Between Jaune hugging everyone who stands still long enough, the entire student body cooing over Juniper, and Alyx making commentary it all goes pretty good..

Then she drags him up to Weiss and Pyrrha, and Jaune becomes a stuttering mess. Alyx decides to ask the redhead who she is, since her saying hello gave Jaune a coughing fit.

Weiss asks Alyx if she knows who Pyrrha is, and when he says no, looks like she's going to start a tirade ,but Jaune plays peacemaker.

He thought long and hard, staying up late into the night: could he pretend he never recognized her again? Try and be ensure he becomes her partner again? game the system like that?

Manipulate her with false information and half-truths like everyone else did?

(No, never. Not in a million years. Never, ever. He's not the Jaune that loved and lost, he's a shadow of that man, but he could never dream of giving her anything but choices and support)

"This is Pyrrha Nikos, Alyx. She won the tournament in Mistral four times.... oh! And she's also sponsored by my favorite cereal, where I got the sweater from!"

Let it be known that Alyx is a reformed hellion and will game the system for Jaune's sake.

"Ohhhh, sounds important. You should partner up with Jaune here, he's brave and loyal and strong, and he deserves the best partner cause he'll be their best partner in turn! Like a knight from a storybook. Team Jaune will be the place to be-"

Jaune ain't having it. He'll protect Pyrrha from everyone, even his own misplaced feelings if he needs to.

"She's also a person who deserves to have her boundaries respected and for no one to project their wants or feelings onto her, Alyx. Come on, sorry you two, please have a nice day...."

(And Jaune misses Pyrrha watching him walk away with a laser focus.)

Initiation comes. Jaune takes Juniper out of his pocket and she grows to regular size, and Jaune lands safely in the forest...

And has a panic attack

He's already changed things, he's changing things, what if he messes up? What if it all gets worse? What if- THUNK

"Hello Again! Are you okay?"

There's Pyrrha, having jumped on her spear and ridden it like a surfboard after using it's propellant features and semblance to guide it.

Because of course she makes it look effortless; riding the spear until it landed in that tree, looking down at him while he looks up.

Something clicks.

She jumps down, hair falling, and without thinking about it, he catches her in his arms, holding her there for an instant that lasts forever before setting her on her feet.

There a small smile on her face, and his helm is hiding the tears in his eyes.

She speaks to him, a beaming smile on her face:

"So, is there anymore room on Team Jaune?"

He takes off his helmet, smiling in-spite of his misgivings as something seems to align within him. And from her beaming face, he thinks he eels it, too.

"Hardy har....partner."

Eyes lidded, Pyrrha calls her spear to her hand without a thought, smiling back at him.

"Then let's get going, partner."

Jaune helps her onto Juniper, and they rush off towards the Relics.

Together.

(It all mostly works itself out, to Jaune's relief. They kill a Nevermore and a Deathstalker, with style even, and Juniper actually dropkicks an Ursa over the horizon) (When he emerges from the Forest with Pyrrha as his partner, Alyx is very smug, the little brat. Jaune hugs her anyways)

While Jaune goes to classes, Alyx doesn't spend all of her time taking care of Juniper she needs to do other things or she'll go stir crazy.

If she doesn't distract herself from the fact that everything she knew is gone, she'll go mad.

So she reads, and watches videos on her scroll, but eventually, after reading her brother's book for the sixth time, she asks Ozpin for his thoughts on it, as the resident 'Legend Expert'.

Ozpin has many thoughts, and delights at the chance to discuss Legends and the truths behind them.

(And listen, Alyx is taking everything he says with a grain of salt, she has heard many rants from the Rusted Knight about him and his habit of omitting details, but his passion for Fairy Tales seems genuine)

And one day Alyx decides she wants to be Better, yes, but to help more people be Better as well.

"How would you like to help me write a sequel to this story my brother wrote? So everyone knows the truth, even if they don't know it...."

(Playing on that Ozpin seems to be the incarnation most obsessed with mythology and researching and lecturing about them)

And so they write, weeks going on and continuing even as the semester starts and classes begin, sharing hot chocolate and occasionally taking breaks to walk Juniper and check in on Jaune, training in the forest nearby:

>The Origins of the Rusted Knight: A story of the only son with seven sisters running away from his family's farm to become a hero like his family ancestor.

>The Girl Who Wished To Become Real: A tragedy that serves as a Stealth Prequel to The Girl who Fell Through The World, and touches on What Makes A Person.

>The Boy Who Returned Home: A tribute to Lewis, and all he did for her and her apology note and goodbye letter and thank you all in one.

(Ozpin does hug her after they write that and have Glynda let Jaune off from classes that day, strangely fond of this girl who understands him more than anyone but also takes none of his crap)

>The Four Who Finally Arrived: The sequel to the Tale of the Rusted Knight, featuring him surviving the original story, his long vigil coming to an end, and him returning home hand in hand with his friends.

>The Four Daughters: Ozma's own apology and farewell, memorializing his failures and regrets.

(Alyx gives him the hug this time, with Juniper purring. Jaune joins in, it's kinda his thing.)

>The Paper Pleasers: A Lighthearted Tale of a kind people who only want to beautify the land....... featuring the Rusted Knight in a comedic role for a change.

>Tales of the Ever After: A series of shorts and bits, telling fantastic blurbs about fantasy characters.

>The Tree and the Blcksmith: A creation Mythos story, featuring the beginning of everything, she who remakes others again and again, and two figures that become surprisingly important.

As the semester goes on, Alyx and Jaune call his family more often, and Jaune cajoles everyone else into doing the same. They argue a little, but eventually give in. Stupid himbo and his "call your family guys, cherish them!"

Weiss calls Whitley and Winter. It goes.... awkwardly. But by the third week of sunday calls, she could almost swear Whitley was looking forward to them. Odd. Stupid eyes, stinging when she thinks about it. And Winter is so, so glad to hear Weiss gush for minutes on end about her dorm's pets and her new friends.

Tai is relieved to hear his daughters are doing well and making friends. He's not so pleased to hear that their Uncle is apparently hanging around between missions, and says he might be hanging around Vale more himself. Weird.

Blake.... okay, Blake chickens out twice in a row. But the third time, Alyx slips in and presses the button for her before slipping out with a "Hi Mrs and Mr Belladonna, we got your daughter to call, don't worry we're keeping an eye out for her stalker, have fun catching up, bye!"

Brat.

But an hour later, Blake has red rimmed eyes and gives Alyx a hug, so she's not too mad.

Pyrrha calls her mother and, fortified with Jaune's hugs and everyone's encouragement, speaks about stepping back form her sponsorship deals while she's at Beacon and opens up about wanting to be more, feeling lighter afterwards.

Ren and Nora are dragged into Jaune's calls several times, and also Pyrrha's once she starts gossiping with her mother over things after their first call, and both will admit it helps more than they would admit to feel like they belong with these people.

And that's the dose of fluff. Tune in next time for Alyx's prank war against Cardin and Roman's second defeat at Juniper's paws (And Cinder getting rekked again, of course)

God. All the stuff about the new stories got me

Alyx not being quite as good a writer as her brother but trying SO HARD and wanting her new brother’s story to be told. Wanting his suffering to be KNOWN and talked about so it’s not like OG Jaune suffered for nothing

The Arkos meeting? *chefs kiss* Not lying to her because she deserves better than that? Pyrrha still rescuing him, but this time from his own self doubt? Top notch, all of it

ALL THE FAMILY CALLS!!! Blake getting reassured that her parents love her (because they’re the best). Weiss reconciling with Whitley and showing Winter that she’s loved as a person, because fight me they both need a hug

Tai being rightly concerned about Qrow because of the plot stuff that the girls don’t know about, but also taking it as prompting to visit his daughters more often. Because god dammit visit your kids, you know where the school is

PYRRHA SETTING BOUNDARIES BECAUSE SHES FINALLY GETTING THE SUPPORT SHE DESERVES!!! YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!!!

Thank you for the dose of fluff. Can’t wait to see Cardin, Roman, and Cinder get wrecked

Also I can’t remember if the Blake Faunus reveal happened already, but if it hasn’t I can’t wait for that. Also can’t wait to see when/if Jaune’s whole deal is revealed

Because I know it’s not HIS trauma, but god damn with him going above and beyond looking out for everyone, I want him to have his break down and be supported by everyone he’s helped build up

dream team (especially dream) will never catch a break. all these people will keep coming out about how they "had a bad experience" with them and it will be some weak shit blown out of proportion by twitter minions

first it was "oh dream covered up george and caiti's situation", then it was "why is he talking about it ? doesn't involve him"

then it was "dream stole my girl and im gonna tell my 1.6 million twt followers about it without talking to him first"

and now its "dream messaged me about my sons insane behaviour and im mad about it because my son can do no wrong"

and ofc we got people like sniff and aimsey yapping vaguely on the side..its white noise at this point.

when will we realise that all these people don't know how the world works? or the fact that they have the same communications skills as a 5 year old?

what do they want dream to do? reach out privately? or air all the business burn book style? jesus christ

The fact this ask is hours old but only got more and more relevant throughout the day... 🙃

I hate to give these cc's any slack, but they're not really moving that differently to the real world tbh.

You know how cliques exist in school? And people gossip and bitch about or within certain cliques? That never really goes away once we're adults, as much as we would like it to. You will probably come up against something similar in the work place.

How bad in a specific workplace will depend entirely on the culture of it. A good work place will have almost limited gossip and bitching.

But what you'll find is that the more discontent a workforce is, the nastier people get. This is normally towards the management, but it can also be towards people who just seem to be getting on better than you.

Dteam are extremely successful. A lot of these cc's are going to think that it's unfair or undeserved. So they will do what they can to tear them down to make themselves feel better. And it's gotten to a really, really toxic level where it is verging on harassment imo.

I feel so, so bad for Dteam, but I am also so proud. They're far from perfect, but they show such humility and grace whenever they are torn to shreds publicly by others. My heart is particularly broken for George and Dream right now, and I just hope they know that their kindness does not go unnoticed.

in my opinion there isn't a more rinharu-coded song in existence than this one. let me cook.

to begin with, the entire scene in the film is about the journey of two kids, full of dreams and expectations for the future. we have the dreamy protagonist who attracts and convinces his love interest to share his same dream, and the love interest accepts, and as they grow up, she becomes as excited as he is about that promised future. does that ring a bell?

I close my eyes and I can see The world that's waiting up for me That I call my own Through the dark, through the door Through where no one's been before But it feels like home

the whole beginning of the song screams "rin matsuoka", in fact, the whole song is from his perspective. he himself said similar words when he was little and sought to fulfill his father's dream. and we've also heard him say several times that "the world is waiting for him". he's a boy with a dream and the will to make it come true.

to me, this is the part that least fits his story, simply due to the fact that in rin's case he was lucky enough to have all the support possible, and no one ever denied him the opportunity to pursue his dreams. it's a privileged position that i'm sure rin is very grateful for. of course, we could take it as a "i know everyone thinks it's difficult (and it is, not everyone becomes an olympic swimmer) but i can do it".

and really, the important detail is in the ending phrase, because it's the first time in the song that "we" is used instead of "i". haru enters the scene.

we have the first chorus, which follows the same theme: rin has a big dream, but now there's something else. he's referring to the world as "ours". the world we're gonna make.

for rin, this is no longer an individual dream, and the change of mind it's obvious because he managed to find his other half at such a young age and he wants to share everything with him; rin has always been able to see the potential haru has, and wants to take him by the hand throughout the trip, to see him shine at his best. rin himself says it on one occasion; "without haru in front of him, there isn't much reason to keep going, right?"

everyone and their mothers knows rin fell for haru at first sight, the poor thing, and since he saw him swim the first time, rin was fascinated and not only that, it became his personal goal to include haru in his dream at all costs. he tells sousuke, with the brightest smile in the world, that he had found someone he wanted to swim with.

from that moment on, haru became part of the dream. after all, not everyone would try as hard for a person as rin did. he abruptly changed schools and swim clubs, went to live with his grandmother in order to do it, left his best friend behind, and... well, rin really went through that entire process just to be able to be together with haru for a while.

and the hard work didn't end there, no. because haru turned out to be a very difficult person, god bless our little stubborn dolphin, and rin had to work twice as hard just to convince him to swim together. ah, but the result was worth it. and all of this didn't change even as they grew up and their relationship turned turbulent. rin was always there, trying to get the full potential out of haru, trying to share his dream with him. and it worked.

rin didn't know it, but he had haru wrapped around his fingers.

"and what about haru?" you say. this is from haru. this part of the song is haru's response to rin's desire to take the world into his own hands.

"share your dreams with me", the relay they won when they were kids, rin's letter, the wonderful relay they did in high school, harurinlandia... we all know how important australia was to haruka. it was there, thanks to rin sharing a little piece of his world, his dream, that haru was finally able to make that same dream his own, too. we saw him, he was so happy.

"you may be right, you may be wrong, but say that you'll bring me along" and isn't that what haru has always wanted? isn't that his biggest weakness? when rin leaves and abandons him? and haru is so frustrated, so bitter, so lonely, and his soul just breaks? it's like he's desperately saying "you can go wherever you want, just please take me with you".

and you may think i'm overreacting but... am i?

haru wants to have a taste of that world rin pushed him into. although perhaps at the beginning it was not by his own will, haru had already been enchanted, and he wants, wants, wants.

i'm not going to repeat the chorus or the pre-chorus again in the post to avoid becoming redundant, but holy shit.

this song is rin holding haru's hand when they were kids to drag him along. is haru slowly following the beat. is rin giving haru a little spin. then, is haru finally daring to dance, too. is both pursuing the same wish, a wish they've cultivated since childhood, and now with each step it just feels closer and closer.

i don't know, I just feel it's beautiful.

Undead Unluck Ep5

good ep as usual, despite being basically all exposition it was still fun finally hearing how everyone in the union sounds and is characterized, and also getting to see some early foreshadowing that makes a lot more sense nowadays 👀 also the shaft style with all the fast cuts and their signature angles is really fitting for episodes like this so that helps too which I do gotta say, despite being a sakuga slut (and the previous episode being crazy) my favourite thing about the anime so far has been that shaft style, since I didn't know beforehand about the involvment of their staff, it gives it a really different feel from the manga but it's still very good in it's own, shafty, way

good episode like usual, I thought this ep would be all preparation and the event itself would be the next one but it was half and half, which is good, not really wasting too much time. we also got to see tsumugi and kaori so that was fun too. next episode looks like there's gonna be some drama with poor shizuka so good luck to her

The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins Ch478 (Finale)

that's all I should say about it. it really doesn't deserve anything else, but I won't be like that. I already knew the author's previous work takopii was needlessly edgy too but since I hadn't read it I didn't let that sway me and started this anyway. I can tell you that I'll never read anything by taizan, be it in WSJ or not. ofc it's not actually a 1, it's more like a 3, but I hated it so much I couldn't give it anything higher than that. from start to finish it was bad. none of the characters were likeable, the plot was confusing and hard to follow with it constantly switching between the "dream" and reality, every family member's plotline wasn't interesting and just an excuse to have more edgy things happen and at the end of the day it ends with "well despite everything that happened nothing changed and we're all still the same" so it was just a complete waste of time. it's sad we live in a world where something like this can get almost 50 chaps but series that are brimming with potential get cut short, and even in that short time are better than this could ever be. "oh if you hated it so much why didn't you drop it then?" simply put, I didn't ever think it'd last too long, and by the point where it had been going for a while I was like "well might as well see where this trainwreck ends up at" like I did for agk anyway. good riddance and see you never again taizan

great chap, not only was their performance great, they also spent a buncha time in the last few chaps talking about how the group that goes first is doomed and can recieve and high score just for it to turn around like this. I figured they wouldn't just get dropped right away since they've actually gotten screentime before unlike a buncha the pairs that showed up just for this arc but still nice to it actually happen

Last Night of Summer

More of the Max and Eddie au! (One shots, listed chronologically in the masterlist!) I got really stuck on one scene even though I had a ton more written so we're just gonna do that one later and do this one now because i really love this one!

Summary: it's the night before school starts and Max and Eddie are both kinda nervous- but he has a very important question: is she gonna join Hellfire?

Max and Eddie would be lying if they had been struck by the back to school spirit this year. The sun was setting and they had both wandered off after pizza with Susan and Wayne to try and turn the nerves from their kids into some kind of celebration.

Without talking they both got to the trash hole, bending over to pick up the metal cup full of little projectiles and making a selection before starting to try and toss them into different things.

“You nervous?" Eddie asked her, and she shrugged like she hadn’t thought about it.

“Are you?” She asked, turning it around on him. She hoped he couldn't see her nerves, she never liked not seeming brave about silly things.

“Kinda, yeah. Like…my second senior year had kind of a weird vibe so I can’t image how the third is gonna go.”

“Weird vibe?”

“Like every day was just a million glances in my direction from every teacher trying to say are you listening this time? That or they treated me like…an…I don’t know, an old pipe.” He tried, unsatisfied.

“You know you’re gonna have to elaborate on that one.”

“Yeah, I figured you weren’t gonna just let me have that one. Like…oh, there’s Munson. He’s noisy and annoying and obviously a problem but he’s also been around for so long that everybody decided to just kinda leave it. Maybe a pipe is too important. More like a busted window with plastic over it. Just like…a background problem. I feel like that second one is gonna get a lot worse.”

“Why’d you never drop out?” Max asked honestly, Eddie shrugged.

“I dunno. Never really…obviously I knew it was an option but it still never really occurred to me as like, a serious thought. I kinda just- I’m a broken window, yeah, but like-maybe I like the fact that everybody has to be a little colder because I’m around. And like…where does the window go, man? Once they replace it. I don’t really know if my whole…thing works out in the real world.”

Max glanced at him with her head tilted slightly.

“Dude- you just gotta get out of Hawkins. In California all the grownups were weirdos like you.” She said, and he grinned. "Also- I'm here to talk about this with you, but if you make me listen to a shitty song you wrote about that metaphor I'm never speaking to you again. I can't take another Dream Warden and the Nightmare Prince. I just can't I still can barely look you in the eye knowing you wrote a fucking song about your chemistry teacher failing you."

“Alright. Harsh, but fair it was not one of my best-"

"It was eight minutes long, Eddie." She said, still horrified remembering it.

"Maybe I just gotta take my show on the road. If all the weirdos are in California maybe they'll appreciate my music." He teased, and he saw her face drop a little bit.

"Well…you can't go yet." She said simply, chucking another rock.

"Awww, would you miss me, Max?" He asked dramatically, though he did feel genuinely touched. She grinned again at the turn back into more comfortable territory.

"Nah- but somebody’s gotta drive me to school, because I don’t want to take the bus.” She said with a laugh, and Eddie slowly dropped his hand to his side instead of throwing his stone.

“You…sure about that? Not sure getting dropped off by the freak is the best move for your first day of High school.” He said, a little nervously, and Max rolled her eyes.

“I’ve been hanging out with freaks since I got here. We haven’t really been…talking much- but still, I’m used to it.” She knew Eddie had a lot of problems at school but the idea of having to pretend to be okay around her friends was painful, the idea of being alone was worse.

“I don’t want to make it harder on you, though. I’m used to it by now but the shit they say can be pretty brutal” He said honestly.

Max shrugged. “Better get used to having me around, then. I’m scarier than you think.”

Eddie couldn't help but smile. Never in his life had he had a friend like Max. They had only known each other for a few months but the way she said it still almost seemed familially unconditional in a way that he felt too. Eddie had ways liked looking out for others, it make him think a little of him mom when he did it. It was a good feeling- but at the same time nobody he had ever helped out had ever been so ready to watch his back too- but this tiny redhead was absolutely willing to square up for him at any moment and it amazed Eddie endlessly. They had been at the ditch the other day when a kid rode by on a bike and called them trailer trash. Without missing a beat Max had grabbed the bucket and started throwing rocks at him until he fell off his bike, then turned back to him and went back to the game like it hadn't happened.

“Yeah? Are you gonna be, like, my bodyguard?”

“Sure. People think I’m scary. Don’t underestimate me, Munson.” Max said seriously, and he shook his head.

“Trust me, I’m never gonna be dumb enough to underestimate you, Mayfield. No matter what you do with your life, I’m betting on you.” He said, earnestly, looking at the fireflies over the trash pit so she could just look pleased with the compliment without trying to hide it.

He gave her a moment, and knew she’d decide not to say anything when she smiled, feeling better about tomorrow.

“One thing I gotta ask, though- are you joining Hellfire?”

Max gave him an apologetic face from where she sat and he fell back in heartbreak.

“Whyyyyy? Is it because you’ve never played? Because i always start the year with a campaign for new players! Pleeeeaaase????” He said, like a kid trying to convince their mom for a puppy.

“Nope, sorry. Not for me- my friends convinced me to try a game a few years back but, ehh…the whole fantasy adventure thing doesn’t really hit as well when you’ve already fought real monsters.” She said, and saw Eddie’s face fall. “And before you get that look,no, I don’t mean Billy.” She said, and watched in delight from the corner of her eye while he put that together.

“...What does that mean?”

“Have I really never told you about this? Mind flayer, demon dogs, alternate dimension?” She asked with a grin when his face folded like she was joking.

“Ha ha.”

“Oh, you think I’m joking? I didn’t march through an alternate dimension with Steve Harrington when I was twelve for yoooooou to not believe I ever even went.” She said indignantly at his more confused face.

“Steve- oooh, is this the campaign they got you to play? Steve was like…why was Steve there? Wait, how do you know Harrington anyway?” He asked, and she gave him an oh, y’know expression. “Was he friends with Billy?”

Max barked an undignified laugh at the guess. “Definitely not. I once saw Billy punch Steve in the face like 20 times because he was trying to attack my, uh- friend, Lucas.”

He sat there with his mouth slightly agape, like he could figure it out with just what she said, and she almost exploded into laughter. She did this sometimes, dropped details of their various brushes with death to Eddie and see him rationalize them as deadpan jokes. It was kinda nice to talk about, honestly, since she was seeing her friends less these days, regardless of why.

“Okay, that part might be real and that’s concerning.” He said, and Max nodded, deciding to take mercy.

“Yeah, uh, I was with my friends once a few weeks after I moved here and Billy…it doesn’t matter why, but he wanted to force me to come home and when I didn't he attacked Lucas because Billy was a racist and kept telling me to say away from him, and Steve just threw a punch. And got his ass beat by Billy so bad he passed out.” She said.

Max frowned remembering how terrifying that night had been, how terrified she had been when Billy locked eyes with Lucas and said the thing she had heard from him hundreds of times and always filled her with dread: You know what happens when you disobey me? I break things.

Cassette tapes. Her first skateboard. Kibble, the stuffed rabbit her grandma gave he before she died.

She should’ve known he wouldn’t have stayed satisfied with the things she cared about for long, it was inevitable he went after the people too.

“So what happened?” Eddie asked, seeing her deep frown lift into a look of satisfaction.

“I happened.” She said with a full grin. When she remembered that moment it didn’t matter that Billy was dead. No matter what he did in the end, Max would never feel anything but fucking unstoppable when she remembered that moment. She leaned back in satisfaction, smiling.

“Turns out people really listen to you when you slam a bat covered in nails on the floor between their legs. Especially if you’re Billy.” She said in a humble but undeniably proud tone.

Eddie grinned at her and gave her a congratulatory pat on the arm.

“Damn Mayfield- I wish I could’ve seen that. Just that part, the rest sounds…fucking terrifying. Jesus, didn’t you say you were like, twelve when you moved here? I knew Billy was bad but I didn’t know he was like…hate-crime bad.” he said with a grimace.

“Yeah. He was…a real piece of work.” She said in a resigned tone.

"Never thought I'd say this but...thank God for Steve Harrington. " Eddie said in disbelief, and Max nodded and smiled.

“...Why did the bat have nails in it?”

“Monster hunting!” She said, scolding him for forgetting, and this one he let go with a roll of his eyes.

Maybe this would be both of their years.
