saw your testimony of your experience being hounded for having a “similar style” to viv on another blog. ty so much for sharing your history there.

i was wondering if you’d be willing to talk about or list what cartoons/movies/comics/art influenced or inspired you/your style.

i’ve long been sick of people lumping other styles in with viv’s as if she’s the first to ever draw like that (as well as viv acting like she is.) and one day when i have the time i’d like to sit down and make an info-graphic of sorts explaining style influence and how it can overlap with other artists even with them never crossing paths.

That's fine!! I don't mind engaging when people ask my side of things, I just don't want to be a source for other people to post random things through, if that makes sense. I do try to be upfront about my experience and bring it up from time to time because there are constantly new victims, and I don't want anyone to feel alone or like they're the only person having a negative experience. I know that a lot of others are afraid to speak out, so I try to be a story that's open in case anyone else needs validation.

As for stylistic influence, The Nightmare Before Christmas was the earliest movie I remember watching and my grandma had to get it on VHS for me because I watched it like every week. I loved Tim Burton's claymation as well as his live action movies (Beetlejuice, Mars Attacks, Batman, etc.) My favourite American cartoons growing up were Batman the Animated Series (very big stylistic influence), The Grim Adventures, and Animaniacs. I grew up abroad, though, so I had a lot of other influences, Winx Club was extremely popular as well as Sailor Moon, so I picked up a lot of habits in my anatomy from those (I think automatically associating ice with villains is also something I picked up from that). But the very long legs compared to bodies is definitely a prevalent thing in media I liked, I even had these dolls (they were called Hi Glamm dolls if you want to look them up) who had legs twice the length of the rest of their bodies. Don Bluth movies were some of my favourites, especially All Dogs and Anastasia. I read a lot of comics my dad collected as well, in big whole-volume collections, and I remember being very fond of Asterix and Obelix, and Bill Maildin's comics about the military (which might not seem like a big one, but I took a lot of inspiration from his spot-blacking for when I do spot-black).

Other major influences concerned, some of my biggest when it came to making comics were other webcomics, specifically Warrior-U (Aisha Thani) and Lackadaisy (Tracy Butler), both of which have been around on the internet far longer than a certain someone who thinks she invented half the things in these comics. I did see her webcomic and followed webcomics from the circle of comics it was lumped in with (Our Personal Purgatory and Alice and the Nightmare, the latter of which is still ongoing and the former you can see the artist's new comic on Webtoons, it's called Death Sitter). Ironically, a friend linked me to her comic and said "it reminds me of your art so I think you'd like it". I wanted to like it, but she was so overly defensive of her "style" that people were "stealing" and so aggressive toward other issues that it pushed me away from it. She definitely didn't invent the very fluid, cartoony bodies thing with big eyes that everyone equates to her, that came long before with Aisha Thani and Puppetology. From what I've seen, Viv used to have a way more Disney-esque style until she became associated with Puppetology and Dollcreep, so if anyone deserves credit for "inventing" the "style", it's them.

I'm genuinely sad that Warrior-U is still gone, but I need to buy her other comics because her art is amazing. Funnily enough, recollecting this all is what prompted me to go look up her gumroad, and see that there are even more new comics to check out.

I don't mind posting this publicly, I'm very proud of my artistic journey and I'm incredibly happy to share due credit to all of my influences growing up. I'm trying not to make this too long, so hopefully this clears up enough, but if you have follow-up questions then feel free to ask.

Comics that influenced my fanfics

These are the comics that I feel creeping into my writing (over and over again) and that I can recommend:

1. New 52: Batman - The Court of Owls & The City of Owls (two volumes, quite a quick read)

Recommendable? Yes! Also for newcomers.

What is it?

It's the introduction of the Court of Owls and still their best story. It's a mystery noir story where Batman investigates the Court and questions everything he knows about Gotham.

How did it influence me?

Pretty obvious but this is one of my main influences for Talons, Brothers & Redemption. I used it as the basis for the Court of Owls-lore (though I tweaked that lore a lot).

It also contains a very controversial moment with Nightwing that was the inspiration for a oneshot I wrote. Some questionable Batdad is definitely here. The sequence where Batman is caught in the Labyrinth and slowly driven insane is excellent and I don't want to spoil it for anyone. As a newcomer, you can pick this up without worry because it takes place after a reboot and is designed to be read by newcomers.

2. Nightwing: Rebirth #1-34 by Tim Seeley (medium read)

Recommendable? YES, YES, YES. This is a great comic to get into Nightwing-comics also for newcomers.

What is it?

It has our boy Dick finally being Nightwing again and establishing himself in Blüdhaven.

How did it influence me?

This series feels like Nightwing boiled down into his pure essence. I feel like this series informs my characterization a lot. It captures the fun of Nightwing but also his need to prove himself and be independent. He also has so many sweet moments with Damian. He's a great big brother in this.

The reintroduction of Blüdhaven is absolutely perfect. Seeley imagines the city as a former whaling town that is trying its hand at casinos and tourism. The perfect city for Nightwing. I imagine this atmosphere every time I write Blüdhaven. Absolute recommend for anyone trying to get into Nightwing-comics.

3. The New Teen Titans (long, prepare for a journey)

Recommendable? Yes, but may be hard to get into for newcomers because of the older and denser style

What is it?

It shows the New Teen Titans growing together as a team and as a family. A very long and dense series from the 80s.

How did it influence me?

This is one of the best comics ever made. The absolute gold standard for Titans-stories and a triumph for long-term storytelling. I use it every time I have Dick develop to Nightwing. Also to characterize the Titans. It's from the 80s so you can see it in the dense writing style. But if you are interested in the Titans, these are their most fundamental stories.

4. Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (just a story arc, very quick)

Recommendable? Yes! If you love Tim Drake, this is a must. You should be fine with basic knowledge of Bat-lore.

What is it?

The introduction of Tim Drake as Robin after Jason's tragic death. It also heavily features our boy Nightwing. It's a wonderful character exploration of Tim, Bruce & Dick.

How did it influence me?

I drew heavily from this story for my first multi chapter fanfic A Question of Loyalty when I introduced Tim. It perfectly lays out his motivation and shows Bruce's turn towards more violence after Jason's death. The ultimate case for why Batman needs a Robin.

5. Batman & Robin Reborn (three volumes, quick to medium read)

Recommendable? Yes, if you love Dick & Damian and want to see Dick as Batman. Not the most accessible writing style but I got a lot of enjoyment out of it as a relative newcomer.

What is it?

Dick takes over as Batman after Bruce's 'death'. He takes Damian on as his Robin and they have adventures and grow together as a duo.

How did it influence me?

This formed my view on Dick & Damian's relationship. These two have this mixed brother/father-son-dynamic. Every time I write these two together I draw on this. It also shows Dick trying to fill Batman's shoes and having self-doubt. Our boy is a perfectionist.

My portrayal of Professor Pyg (shudders) in Time's Cost also comes from this. The dude is absolutely terrifying.

Perfect for the Dick&Damian-fans.

6. Nubia & The Amazons (miniseries - quick read)

Recommendable? Yes, if you are interested in Wonder Woman-mythology and the Amazons

What is it?

It's about Nubia finding her place on Themyscira and as a leader. A very cerebral series that delves into Amazon lore with strong feminist themes.

How did it influence me?

The odd one out on this list. It's more of a marginal influence but I use it as a basis for my Amazon-lore. This series shows that everyone is welcome on Themyscira and I just find that wonderful. It's the kind of Themyscira I want to portray in my stories. I follow all of the newer Nubia-comics (the Amazons in general) and I just adore her as a character. Nubia got revamped as a character so you can just jump in even if you don't know anything about her.

i see a lot of people talk about edward being disabled in fma, but it's less often talked about how alphonse is also disabled. i think it's partially because alphonse doesn't experience physical pain like edward so for a majority of the series, he's not having any of those kind of symptoms, but he is still disabled. also because alphonse's experiences are unique. like you don't see ant walking, talking suits of armour in real life (unless they're piloted by a human being physically inside them) and in world, there are about 3 others like alphonse).

alphonse is dependent on edward's survival to function. after fighting scar for the first time, alphonse is literally in pieces. he can't walk or anything until edward is in a position to fix him. similarly his body is dependent on nutrients from edward's body. like there's the point towards the end where edward gets impaled and alphonse collapses. furthermore, these periods where alphonse collapses start to become debilitating towards the end of the series and massively alter his daily living.

also, alphonse constantly talks about how upsetting it is for him to not feel any physical sensations. yeah, he's not feeling physical pain, but he's also not feeling the warmth of a fire, the sun on his face, or the fluffiness of the cats he keeps petting. he talks a lot about not being able to eat or sleep, and how there's a lot of foods he wants to try.

there's another thing that highlighted by edward at one point. alphonse's body doesn't regenerate at all. the parts scar destroys are gone forever; edward stretches out the metal that alphonse has left to repair his body. and obviously human beings don't regrow limbs, but imagine if your skin didn't ever heal over a cut. how long would your body last?

also alphonse gets told several times that his body is great throughout the series, and he literally argues against it every time, because to him it is shit. like he is missing some of his senses just for some supposedly immortal body that isn't even immortal.

even once alphonse gets his own body back, the amount of physical therapy the boy has to go through. his body has essentially been doing nothing and only receiving what nutrients it can get from edward for years. by the end of the series, he's still using a cane as a walking aid. it's unknown whether he requires that cane for the years to come, but for at least a period of time he requires a mobility aid. I don't know enough to say what effect muscle decay from inactivity and severe malnourishment during a major portion of his teenage years would have long term.
