The thing i love about dungeon meshi is it's about eating. And not in some bullshit metaphor way like eating as an analogy for love or power, no, it is unapologetically, literally about eating. How we relate to eating socially and culturally, how the dynamics of eating shape the natural world, how important eating is to our bodies and our wellbeing, everything comes back to eating. It is a story with total thematic focus on something most people would write off as too benign to be able to carry a whole story. But eating is important! We all do it, three times a day! Why shouldn't it get a story all to itself?

can’t shake the idea of amanda making the kids spend a harvest season on uncle trip’s and aunt t’pol’s pear farm in washington. this is basically a “the simple life” au where sybok forms a cult of personality, michael frees all the frogs from a local high school, and spock gets a crush. classic boy meets world stuff. Bad Batch episode three Cody rant-
yes, Cody DID learn a lot from Obi-Wan, such as how to negotiate properly, but i think it’s also important to recognize that that’s just who Cody is and who he always has been.
Cody has ALWAYS been undeniably kind and has ALWAYS had a good sense of right and wrong. this is why he’s universally loved by every single clone we see- the Batch who hated regs loved him from the start, including Crosshair. every battalion we saw him interact with has always had a DEEP respect for him because he is, fundamentally, a GOOD person. he’s one of the best people we see in all of Star Wars.
that’s not something he learned from Obi-Wan. thats just who he is. and i think that’s something Obi-Wan really loved about him.
Cody is to the bone a kind and caring person. he is extremely loyal to those he loves and there is nothing that matters more to him than those he considers his family- that’s why he was calling his troops by their name, even when no one else was. that’s why he was genuinely distraught when Nova died, and had to be bodily pulled away from him even thought his own life was at risk. that’s why he was kind to Crosshair even though no one else was willing to even sit with him.
Cody is his own person, just as Obi-Wan is his own person, and while they absolutely have a lot of similar traits, those aren’t things they gained from each other.
Cody didn’t suddenly start being kind because Obi-Wan taught him that- we know he’s been like that since he was taking Rex under his wing on Kamino, and did the same with every other troop he encountered. he’s just an intrinsically caring and deeply kind brother. he didn’t decide to start vying for peace because he thinks Obi-Wan is dead. Cody’s ALWAYS been a fair person tries to hear everyone out. that is just who he inherently is, just as that’s who Obi-Wan inherently is, and that is the reason they love each other so much.
i think the reason this episode was so good at showing just how good of a person Cody is comes from the fact that he is alone. he is entirely in command. there is no Obi-Wan there, there’s no one he has to listen to, he is the sole commander here. and yet, even at the pressure of his superior officer, he doesn’t loose his morals at all, and consistently shows how kind and sweet he is. he isn’t doing that because of Obi-Wan, he’s doing that because it’s who he is, even with the inhibitor chip.
of COURSE he would question the Empire and leave as soon as the chip started wearing off, and of COURSE he’d carry the guilt of Order 66 squarely on his shoulders. he is a great example of someone who knows right from wrong and people who ever questioned him don’t understand his character at ALL.

Regulus was not to blame.
Sirius was not to blame.
Two boys who both grew up in an abusive household- one escaped, one remained
Neither. Are. To. Blame.
We should be turning on the people that made that household abusive in the first place.

Oh ALSO to the person who said (something along the lines of) "The omen of death and the destruction, together who can see the light of each other" YOU HAVE GIVEN ME SO MANY THOUGHTS
BECAUSE YES, Jimmy was the cannery, the first to die, the omen of death for many. But, the canary made the miners feel safe, the bird was the companion of many, brought light and hope to the miners when they were deep down where no sunlight had every touched before. He provides light.
AND YEAH Tango is seen as destruction, fire, the blaze, so angry that he would make the world cave in during a fit of rage. But, the Blaze part of him makes it easier for him to set torches on fire. In case of emergency, the Fire within acts like a beacon of light, leading the rest out of danger that lies within the deepest of the dark. He provides light.
But nobody sees this in either of them. Except each other. Tango looks at Jimmy and sees his bright coloured wings and smiles, knowing he might not be safe for long, but as long as Jimmy is okay in that moment, Tango will be too. And Jimmy looks at Tango and sees the fire as his warmth, as comforting, so he smiles, even knowing that fire may one day hurt him, but its harmless because right now, the only thing warmer than the fire on his head, is Tango's smile he directs towards Jimmy.

Annabeth, Grover and Percy are the literal definition of soldier poet king like-
Annabeth is strong and brave and smart, she sees everything as a battle to be won
Grover is the heart and the soul, even if the world is ugly sometimes he is kind and loving
Percy has had the fate of the world dumped on his shoulders, he didn't want to be the hero but had to

What do you think Van's relationship with religion is like, before and after the crash?
hey!! I love this question because I actually have a whole hc for this!!!
pre-crash I hc that Van was raised catholic and went through catechism (with Nat & Laura Lee). I think she partially did confirmation because of family pressure, but also because I think she has always been someone who searches for meaning in the world around her, and I think she looked to the church as a way to find that meaning as a kid because it was all she knew. (I think Van's parents were probably more along the lines non-practicing catholics, and only really went to mass for major holidays, but they still really pushed for her to get confirmed to keep up appearances with extended family).
I think Van left the church sometime in middle school after she fully realized / came to terms with being a lesbian. (I personally hc that Van's dad left when she was 12 or 13 and her mom's issues got worse after, so she also didn't have the same family pressure to stay in the church). however, I believe she still held onto some of the mysticism of the church / saint lore, etc. she grew up with and she more was rejecting an organized religion she knew wouldn't accept her, rather than all of the beliefs (though I don't think she would necessarily admit that to herself).
as far as immediately pre-crash, I think Van probably used humor to cope and deflect from any religious trauma by high school and probably would have described herself as a recovered catholic / atheist, if it ever came up.
I also think having that common background of being raised catholic and rejecting that upbringing was something she bonded over with Taissa pre-crash (it's canon that at least Tai's grandmother was catholic). I can definitely picture them being their sarcastic selves together and making quips back and forth through an entire Christmas Eve midnight mass they both got dragged to.
I also think having that common background adds some additional context to their fight in the attic in S1E10. like if rejecting religion and supernatural explanations for the world around them, is something they bonded over, there's an added layer there when Van suddenly believes in this supernatural thing and Taissa is still firmly an atheist.
(I could write a whole thesis separate thesis here on why it makes so sense that Van believed so fervently in the supernatural element and embraced the cult practices as a way to make sense of that terrifying time in the wilderness, assuming a catholic upbringing. tldr: in my personal experience, it's fairly common for people who have dealt with specifically catholic religious trauma to be more susceptible to that type of influence because of the beliefs we were raised with).
anyway, post-crash I think Van struggled a lot to cope with the things they did in the wilderness and kind of just completely shut off all belief in anything instead of actually facing what they did. I also think she's going to go back to her belief in the wilderness after being cured of cancer in S3 because she never actually worked through any of her trauma, and therefore, is still very susceptible to falling back into that acolyte role.
also, if the crash never happened, I think Van would've been the type of recovered catholic who gets into like spirituality as a way to make sense of the world (tarot cards, astrology, etc.)
tldr: I think Van was raised catholic but is an atheist both pre and post-crash
