Year Ender 2022: India made a record of winning the World Cup, missed 2 more titles, Rohit Sharma also…
Talking about the performance of the team, the Indian team played a total of 24 ODIs this year. He won in 14, while lost in 8. The result of 2 matches did not come. If we look at the T20 record, this year Team India won 28 out of 40 matches. No other team could win more matches than that this year. 2 Test matches are still left. If you look at the record of the Indian women’s team, it has won 10…

Venus-Saturn: A Beauty Queen
Tumblr media
⚐ note ⚐
My first post yay! It was originally on my website but I'm deleting that soon so I brought it here.
First things first:
I do not read charts professionally.
correlation ≠ causation
If you have any of the mentioned aspects and have experience in pageantry or even an interest in it, please please feel free to talk about it in the quotes or ask box!
tw: eating disorders
⚐ note ⚐
This a veryy long post!! If you share please give me credit !!
Tumblr media
While doing research for my Desire & Astrology project (now closed), I was reminded of something that deals with Venus but is rarely discussed, and that's beauty pageants.
Whether this is because of its declining popularity or lack of interest in something that is presumed to be shallow, beauty pageants display Venus's domain very well.
OG BEAUTY QUEEN
Let's go back, and I mean way back, to Aphrodite. She took part in a beauty contest herself. Since I will be referencing the original myth (The Judgement of Paris) that appears in the Cypria, Greek names will be used instead of Roman.
It all starts at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, all the gods were to attend except for one, Eris, the goddess of strife and discord.
She showed up anyway but was not allowed to attend. This makes her upset and to live up to her name, she causes discord by dropping an apple that was addressed to the most beautiful.
The three goddesses: Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena began to argue about who the fairest of them all was. As we can tell, Aphrodite won and became thee beauty queen of the millennium.
Tumblr media
The Judgement of Paris -- Etienne Jeaurat (1699-1789)
Tumblr media
prominence of venus-saturn aspect
I began looking up countries that had top-winning international titles (Miss World, Miss Universe, etc.) and/or had a strong pageantry culture. These countries are (most to least):
Venezuela
The Philippines
The United States
Puerto Rico
India
Australia
United Kingdom
Brazil
South Africa
Sweden
Mexico
While looking at these countries' natal charts, those who had an AA/A rating, there was a particular aspect that popped up, Venus-Saturn.
India: Venus Conjunct Saturn
United Kingdom: Venus Opposite Saturn
South Africa: Venus Square Saturn
Venezuela: Venus Opposite Saturn
It's a smaller list compared to the listed countries. So, I instead looked up the natal charts of documented beauty pageant winners.
I can't list all the women (and men!!) who have this placement it will just make the post even longer than it already is. But here are some (with AA/A rating!!):
Venessa Williams: Venus Conjunct Saturn
Michelle Pfeiffer: Venus Square Saturn
Jennifer Hosten: Venus Square Saturn
Zsa Zsa Gabor: Venus Opposite Saturn
Susan Powell: Venus Trine Saturn
Oprah Winfrey: Venus Square Saturn
Adriana Lima: Venus Square Saturn
I read 100+ charts (all had verified birth times btw), and though I'm focusing on Venus-Saturn I did notice some other aspects that appeared frequently:
Venus-North Node
Venus-Sun
Venus-MC
Why focus on the Venus-Saturn aspect? Well, I'm kind of tired of the same old description lol. But really, going through the natal charts was interesting, and of the amount that I read, over 40% had the aspect (I did the math), which made up the majority.
Tumblr media
recap + commentary
First a recap of the planets Venus and Saturn. Venus is the planet of beauty, unity, and harmony, because of this influence this makes Venus a benefic.
On the other hand, Saturn is the planet of restriction, time, and rejection which means he is a malefic planet.
While watching these videos about the pageantry culture of many countries and the women who participated in them, I noticed the habits of these women and those who assist them.
These women were restrained. The restriction wasn't just self-imposed, it was also done by those around them (sometimes parents, other contestants, or even the public).
So, when Saturn communicates with Venus it may indicate that connecting with others, whether platonic or romantic, is difficult, strained, and restricted. And it's not just connecting with others, but also connecting with themselves.
This is more obvious with harsh aspects as the planets are in conflict. And to reach some sort of balance, you have to appease both planets.
Beauty pageants are one way to appease the conflict.
Through pageants, a person can explore the "Venusian" domain through fashion, glamor, being surrounded by women, and of course, receiving attention.
The "Saturnian" domain is explored through isolation from their families and friends, a restriction of their diet, and the development of the discipline needed to win the competition.
Tumblr media
ATMOSPHERE OF BEAUTY PAGEANTS
I watched many documentaries and I gathered quotes that I felt showed the Venus-Saturn aspect perfectly from the preparation to the execution:
"The one who gets the crown, she has to be very disciplined, very well-centered. You have to polish the rough diamond and all the rough edges"
"Morning call at 5:30, curfew at 10 o'clock, no food outside the diet regime, no alcohol, no smoking in public. Every move is watched."
The woman given any beauty pageant title is the woman with the most discipline and shows it not only to the judges but the public.
While I watching one documentary there were two women, Neha and Gauahar, who were labeled as "stuck-up" and were given the nickname "ice-vaginas" by another contestant.
And this is a recurring assumption of those who have prominent Saturn placements. They're often seen as being aloof and cold when they are not.
While I don't have the natal charts of Neha and Gauahar, I can point out that the winner of the pageant, Neha, did display Saturn-like qualities the best.
She was strict with her diet, which included no smoking.
She was distant and focused on winning the competition only.
And while Neha didn't wish any ill or harm to the other contestants she still came off as rude or impolite.
Funnily enough, rudeness is often aligned with Saturn. Archetypically speaking, Saturn has no need for politeness or niceness, he is isolated and prefers to keep to himself.
Venus on the other hand is all about bonding, and to bond you have to be pleasant, polite, and aware of others.
Tumblr media
BEAUTY QUEEN CONFESSIONS
Here's what some Beauty Queens had to say about their experience in pageantry:
"I had phenomenal moments as Miss America. But the reality is it is 24 hours a day every day of the week for the entirety of the year."
"Behind the scenes, there were rules like no men were allowed in your hotel, including your father."
"It's pressure to perform, pressure to produce, pressure to provide."
"The schedule was grueling. I remember having 3-5 appearances in one day. And a different city, every 18-36 hours, literally, it seems glamorous and yet it was very lonely, many times."
"It's really really hard because you are mentally drained, you are physically drained, you are isolated."
"I felt very alone, It's very isolating. It's just you and your tour manager all year."
Tumblr media
And that's the thing, no matter how glamorous it may seem to be on stage in a glittering gown, the reality (Saturn) can be, and is, very lonely.
The rules and guidelines that used to be in place to compete were so strict, but the guidelines that followed the woman who won the title were even stricter.
No beauty pageant with beauty sounds silly, but a beauty pageant without discipline and pressure is comical.
Pressure to be graceful and composed. Pressure to have the best answer, the best smile, the best gown, the best walk, the perfect package.
As pressure makes diamonds. The pressure (Saturn) and stiffness (also Saturn) are honed into gracefulness (Venus).
--
I previously mentioned how many beauty pageant participants restrict their diet. Below are two quotes from two different documentaries:
"When I competed in Miss America there were women who, unfortunately, were currently dealing with eating disorders. One woman would only eat baby food, so she just brought baby food jars with her, and that's all she would have."
"This is my lunch, and this is what I eat two hours after lunch. Spinach with chicken broccoli with fish. It tastes horrible. Nothing has seasoning, but this is the diet. One has to make sacrifices."
As starvation is aligned with Saturn, sadly, it's not surprising to hear and see many women restricting themselves to win.
I know this is about beauty pageants, but I see the same thing with models. In fact many people, from the models themselves to people who work alongside them, mention it.
Models express how the face pressure to avoid food to keep a thin appearance.
And this pressure doesn't just come from designers and casting directors, but it's self-imposed.
Many models describe the time they were their sickest and thinnest as also the time when they experienced a boost in their career, maybe even experiencing their prime.
They joke about being "hangers", since their job is to display clothes, and the focus should be on that, not the model's body.
It seems demeaning, another Saturn thing, but it's why they strive to be so skinny.
Saturn is the planet of rejection, and rejection can foster humility or humbleness, another thing he rules over.
When models address themselves as hangers they remind not only themselves but also those around them that the attention should not be on them, but the clothes. The message is clear:
"I don't matter, the clothes do."
Tumblr media
wrapping it up
Though the way I read birth charts is heavily influenced by Hellenistic and medieval astrological techniques, I still believe that everything is up to the person.
The focus is the theme of Venus-Saturn: disciplined and restricted beauty/connection/and love. Though using beauty pageants is a dramatic example, I feel it makes the theme and archetype of the aspect obvious.
The Venus-Saturn native understands, or at least comes to understand, that joyful things take work; beauty can bring joy, and relationships--connecting with others--bring joy, but all take work, vulnerability, and some sacrifice.
It's like this, in this context, Saturn allows you to explore the "Venusian" domain: to show yourself, enjoy the fun of dressing up, and be around people.
But you have to sacrifice your time, the habits that you previously established (eating whatever you want, smoking, etc.), and the connections you already have.
Because Venus-Saturn natives are typically so used to being in situations where this theme is emphasized it should be no surprise that they often end up winning the crown, literally and metaphorically.

Carlos Sainz Jr - It's Always Been You
Requsted: on wattpad
Prompt: Y/n and Carlos were friends but when they become more competitive it turns into bickering etc
Warnings: nada
Tumblr media
Carlos Sainz and Y/n Y/l/n. They had known eachother their entire lives. Their father's were both racers and childhood friends and theur mother's were friend too before they met the drivers. Naturally, they spent a lot of time with the eachothers family, even though she lived in Barcelona and he lived in Madrid. They visited each other for the weekends but then things started to change when they were eight. She began karting and so did Carlos. Now, for the first few races they were friends and they got along fine, but then then during the last race of the season, he cut her off and she went spinning, making her lose the championship and ended with Carlos winning it.
She stormed up to Carlos after the race. She threw the helmet at his feet. "You son of a bitch!" A gasp escaped her mother. "Y/n! Language." She yelled. "You took my championship! You made me spin out!" Her father grabbed her hand. "No! You just aren't good at racing! Girls cannot race and I tried to tell you but you wouldn't listen! Girls.cant.race!" The statement felt like a stab to the heart. Tears poured down her cheeks as she ran by him to hide under the table in my tent. She had worked so hard for this, she worked so hard only to end up crying. Carlos walked in and knew she'd be under the table, it had been her go to when escaping family. "I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have done that. I think I forgot what I was doing and just-" he slapped his two hands together, indicating them colliding. "Yeah." She sniffed. "It was dumb. You shouldn't have done that." He put his arm around her shoulder as a form of comfort. "I won't do it again. I promise. Oh, and-" he paused taking something. "you left your helmet." She believed his promise. She shouldn't have but shs believed it.
Formula Renault. Y/n was about to become the first girl to win the competition. Final three corners of the final lap, he bumped into her rear wheel and off she spun. There was nothing she could have done to save the car, she could only brace herself. She felt the front get hit, then the back and that was it. The car came skidding to a stop. She un buckled herself and hopped out of the car without a scratch. Y/n took her helmet off and walked back to my team. Carlos was up on the podium with the Spanish anthem baliring. She stormed over to the tent again and booted the helmet across the ground. "Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! It's always the fucking same with this sneaky bastard!" Y/n was finally done with him and his stupid promises.
Her first race in Formula 1. She wasn't the first woman in formula one but was still a woman none the less. Y/n was driving along the straight of Australia in 2016 and yet again, that pesky Madridsta hit the car but this time, it took both of then out of the race. She hopped out, actually finished with him now. She was not going to pretend like it just happens. He was out of his car, observing the damage and taking off his gloves. He turned around to be faced with her, the small catalán girl, in a Force India suit, about to rip his head off. "What's your fucking problem?" He was speechless. "Do you have a problem with me at all? If so just say it so I can stop trying to be nice to you."
"Why would I have a problem with you?" he asked, scratching the back of his ear. "You are fucking joking! You always hit me off the track! Now look! Karma is a bitch isn't she?" She threw her arms up in the air. "I didn't mean to-" she shushed him by placing her finger on his lips. "No, no, no. I'm in a silver, orange and green car in the middle fo the day! You can't miss it! You made a promise when we were eight that you would stop crashing into me and here we are again Carlos!" He still doesn't say anything. "Just come find me when you want to talk because I'm not doing this right now!" She tried to walk away but he grabs her hand to pull me back. "Get off me!"
"No. We are talking now." He leans into my ear. "The cameras are on. Just pretend at least." She scoffs and walk away with him reluctantly. "Explain why you won't stop being a douchebag." She says coldly. "Ooh. That hurt. It's almost as if you haven't called me that before." he replied in a mocking tone. In all honesty, she had called him that a couple of times but it was true. "Yeah? Well don't feed the bullshit excuse of 'I didn't mean to, I didn't see you' cause that what you always say and I played along but now I'm in Formula one! You can't miss my car! Look at it Carlos!" he looked back at the car stranded. "That wasn't my excuse this time."
"Aha, but you had an excuse!" She laughs. "Yes. My brakes weren't responding. They just, stopped working. You can go have a look now if you want but they don't work." That...that actually made sense now. "Oh. Sorry I guess." That apology sounded so ingenuine. "I should be saying sorry. I ruined your first race." Damn. He was actually apologising for something that wasn't his fault. "Can I do anything to make it up to you?" he asked. That took her by surprise. "No, no. It's fine. Brakes well, break sometimes and there's nothing we can do about it really." I reasoned. "How about dinner? It's the least I could do." She stopped dead in her tracks. "Dinner? Like a candle lit dinner? At night?" He nodded with a smirk growing onto his face. "What time?" His smile grew as he heard my response. "Eight or seven. Up to you really."
"Half seven. Would that be alright for you?" He slung his arm around my shoulder. "Definitely. Can't wait princesa." Y/n looked at him again with a smirk. "Princesa? Since when was I princesa?" She asks while being in a state of nervous giggles. "It's always been you."

Hi I have a geology question?
So I just saw this picture:
Tumblr media
And I assume it's accurate (as accurate as a distant projection can be anyway) since it is from natgeo (I checked), but it makes no sense to me at all? I remember from my hs geology class that the atlantic ocean is expanding because of the mid-ocean ridge diverging fault, and that the pacific ocean is shrinking because the pacific plate is subducting under most of its neighboring plates. But this picture shows that the exact opposite has happened and I am bewildered. What am I missing????
Hi! Awesome, I had an obsession with tectonics and supercontinent cycles back in my undergrad this is gonna be fun.
So for context, this is an image of "Pangaea Proxima" which is one of the four different suggestions for how the next supercontinent could look like, including: Amasia, Novopangaea, and Aurica. It's not that this isn't an accurate image, but it's a scientific model of a proposed supercontinent that could happen. Some key points of each model is:
Pangaea Proxima - prediction that Mid-Atlantic Ridge becomes a subduction zone, first between South America and Africa, leading to closing of Atlantic Ocean. Based on knowledge of previous continent formation and break-up cycles rather than current modern day mechanisms.
Tumblr media
Amasia - prediction that Pacific Ocean closes while Mid-Atlantic Ridge pushes the Americas westward, following the current subduction trends we see today. Asia and North America would collide first in this model, at the North Pole.
Tumblr media
Novopangaea - another prediction that the Pacific Ocean closes due to movement from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Based on current tectonic and subduction trends. The configuration is pretty similar to the Amasia model but this one involves collision of East Africa and Australia (since East Africa is actively rifting).
Tumblr media
Aurica - most recent proposed prediction. A very dynamic model that proposes the Pacific AND Atlantic Oceans will close at some point, and a new ocean replaces them. Eurasia is split into halves due to a proposed rift zone forming from the arctic to India. The Americas are then bodied on both sides from the 2 rifted halves.
Tumblr media
In geology, "the present is the key to the past", but the future can be a bit more uncertain because tectonics are proven to be unpredictable. There is research that states the tectonic cycle is full of unexpected shifts, and so Pangaea Proxima (the one you shared) accounts for that unexpected possibility either the Mid-Atlantic Ridge turning into a subduction zone or just failing/ceasing to continue rifting. There are many failed rifts, one that I distinctly remember is the North America Midcontinent Rift (near where the midwest/Great Lakes are).
Hope that answers your question!

3 and 6 for Matt please
3) Who depends on them. & something they lost, but would love to have back
These days? No one lol. Every once in a blue moon, Alfred needs his emotional support canuck or some backup or another pair of hands or a second pair of eyes. He might smack Matt on the shoulder like, "what would I do with out you, dude?" but that's a shakey premise on a good day. Love doesn't correspond 1:1 with need. Arthur is much more enmeshed with Europe whether he likes it or not. Jack and Zee go into the Pacific whether he likes it or not.
The picture differed greatly between the early Cold War and World War Two. Matt was this incredibly important bridge between two empires. I think we, myself included, sleep on this as a community. But so do even Canadian historians, unless they have a taste for diplomatic history. Just how important Canada was not only to the Americans and the British as two entities but how little would have gotten done in the North Atlantic without the ability to keep shit running, and everyone getting along just gets lost in the more dramatic stories. No one will make a movie like Saving Private Ryan or Dunkirk about boring stuff like food logistics or submarine hunting. Or if they do, the protagonist is going to be an American. British units serving next to Americans all across the European theatre dragged Canadian officers with them to do what essentially became anglo-to-anglo translation. We have this picture from the top down of Churchill and Roosevelt, but on every level below that, Canada is the great facilitator. To the point it causes conflict with India, Australia, South Africa and France. Even the USSR got a bit miffed about the influence of Canada in the early UN. At one point, he was this hinge between the power brokers and held enormous power. It's a lot of emotional intelligence that my autistic ass is kind of shit at writing, but the sheer influence he held for about 20 years is just so intense.
There was also a time when he was absolutely indispensable to his father. Need a war crime committed? The spare is prepared. More than half of the UK's food between 1940 and 1944 was Canadian, including 77% of wheat. By '44, More than 45% of RAF ground crews? Canadian. More than a quarter of the pilots were also Canadian. The entire gold reserve of the British Empire was smuggled to Montreal quietly and competently even most economic historians don't even remember its a thing. If it was asked of him, he did it, and he did it well.
But that was a very long time ago now. And perhaps, as L.P. Hartley put it, the past is another country. And I think Matt of today misses that time. Not the blood and treasure lost, not the strain, and god knows not the empire or even the rest of it, really. But there was that snapshot in time where he spoke and was heard. Before the French decided the Francophone soul of Canada was again politically expedient and did their damndest to tear it out, Matt was in so many ways, a stupidly important power broker. But that was long before he became a negative space where any echo of what Americans are or are not sounds.

What Russia can't win on the battlefield it will try to accomplish with disinformation, propaganda, and plain old bribery.
A Russian cabal operated a propaganda site masquerading as a news site called the Voice of Europe. In addition to publishing items designed to undermine confidence in various European governments, it outright made payoffs to various EU politicians.
Investigators claimed it used the popular Voice of Europe website as a vehicle to pay politicians. The Czech Republic and Poland said the network aimed to influence European politics. Voice of Europe did not respond to the BBC's request for comment. Czech media, citing intelligence sources, reported that politicians from Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Hungary were paid by Voice of Europe in order to influence upcoming elections for the European Parliament. The German newspaper Der Spiegel said the money was either handed over in cash in covert meetings in Prague or through cryptocurrency exchanges. Pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk is alleged by the Czech Republic to be behind the network. Mr Medvedchuk was arrested in Ukraine soon after the Russian invasion, but later transferred to Russia with about 50 prisoners of war in exchange for 215 Ukrainians. ' Czech authorities also named Artyom Marchevsky, alleging he managed the day-to-day business of the website. Both men were sanctioned by Czech authorities. Poland's intelligence agency said it had conducted searches in the Warsaw and Tychy regions and seized €48,500 (£41,500) and $36,000 (£28,500).
"Money from Moscow has been used to pay some political actors who spread Russian propaganda," BIS said in a statement. It added that the sums amounted to "millions" of Czech crowns (tens of thousands of pounds).
I went looking for the Voice of Europe site but it is now missing (Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site). So I held my nose and visited their Twitter account and nothing new has been posted since the scandal broke.
We need to be careful when looking at news online. Recently a series of fake sites pretending to be legit US news sources was uncovered.
Russia-Backed ‘Fake News Organizations’ Revealed Across the U.S. in Bombshell New York Times Report
The fake news sites have names that sound like they are legit but aren't. Examples: D.C. Weekly, the New York News Daily, the Chicago Chronicle, and the Miami Chronicle. There is a legit New York Daily News – note the different word order from the fake. There once was a newspaper called the Chicago Chronicle but it folded during the Theodore Roosevelt administration.
Google News searches spew a lot of crap. In a lot of cases the "news" sources on Google are just the proverbial guy in his underwear in his mom's basement posting bullshit. They may not be Russian but they are often dubious.
It's best to create a bookmark folder of known legit news sources. There are still numerous good sources not behind paywalls. And many countries have public broadcasters who post news in English. Just a few: NPR, BBC, DW, CBC, ABC (Australia), RFI, YLE, Radio Sweden | Sveriges Radio, NHK-World, and even EER in Estonia.
When running across a news story which sounds peculiar, check to see if it's being reported in known legit media before posting or sharing it.
There are national elections this year in a number of countries including India, the US, and (probably) the UK. Don't inadvertently assist Putin's effort to spread disinformation and sow chaos.

I wish I could tune in to your lives but the time difference versus my inability to remain awake past 11PM means I only get to dream of the Hilary hilarity I am missing 😅 you're one of my favourite tumblr peeps !
Aw darn. What's the time difference? Maybe we can switch up the times every now and then, I know I have some followers in other countries.

I was looking at the constellation Orion and thinking how it always looked like a butterfly to me in my light polluted area, and thought I'd love to know what people see. I've done my best to look up how different cultures view it too. I already knew about The Deer but I'm finding others too, apologies if I missed any.
Please note, I included constellations that use part of the traditional Orion, or include Orion and other stars for their constellation.
Please reblog for more votes, thanks! C:

In the past two years Glasgow has become the first UK museum to repatriate objects to India. Newcastle and the Horniman in south London followed an example set by Aberdeen and Cambridge by returning looted Benin bronzes to Nigeria. Exeter handed sacred regalia to the Siksika Nation in Canada. Oxford returned the remains of 18 indigenous people to Australia.
Earlier this month Manchester completed a landmark return of 174 objects to the to the Anindilyakwa community, who live on an archipelago in the Gulf of Carpentaria, off the northern coast of Australia.
The scale of repatriation – or rematriation as it was proudly labelled by a Scottish national museum returning a totem pole to Canada – is unprecedented but missing from all this, campaigners say, are the nation’s London-based national museums who look increasingly isolated.
“Regional museums are so far ahead of national institutions,” said Lewis McNaught, who runs the not-for-profit Returning Heritage project.
“It has been led by Glasgow and it really just remains for national collections to wake up to the trend which is, actually, now global. The UK is really falling behind quite dramatically.”
Dan Hicks, a professor of contemporary archaeology at Oxford University as well as curator at the city’s Pitt Rivers Museum, said repatriation has become part of the “fake culture wars” with some on the right seeing it as “wokery”.
“What that means, sadly, for our national institutions is that they are being forced into a position of inertia and making themselves increasingly irrelevant with every week that goes by and every restitution that we see from the regions and elsewhere around the world.
“Everyone else is getting on with it.”
The big reasons for the two different narratives is that the London-based national museums are hamstrung by legislation.
The British Museum Act 1963 specifically forbids the museum from disposing of its holdings. The National Heritage Act of 1983 prevents trustees of institutions, including the V&A, Science Museum and others, from deaccessioning objects unless they are duplicates or beyond repair.
Regional museums, whether they are run by local authorities, universities or are regimental museums or private, don’t have the same issue.
But the picture is more complicated, said Hicks, and repatriation is also not a new issue or debate.
“There is a deep and long history to restitution in this country. Edinburgh university was returning human remains two generations ago, never mind one generation … there are scores if not hundreds of stories over the past 40 to 50 years.
“It should be part of what museums do. It’s a part of the job.”
Glasgow is seen as a leader in the repatriation conversation since an agreement in 1998 to return a Sioux warrior shirt acquired at the end of the 19th century from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
The return of the Lakota Sacred Ghost Dance Shirt to the Wounded Knee Survivors’ Association established criteria that have been widely adopted in the museum sector.
Duncan Dornan, the head of museums and collections at Glasgow Life, said repatriation should be seen as a two way process and recalled the joy at the signing ceremony last year for the repatriation of artefacts to India.
“It was a very emotional event and Glaswegians of Indian heritage were very emotional. Their response was that they were very proud of their city.
“We see repatriation as establishing a relationship of equals and emphasising Glasgow as an outward-looking modern city.
“This is about a 21st-century relationship rather than a historic relationship.”
The recent Manchester Museum return of objects was seen as important because they were not giving back things that had been looted. They were everyday objects, including dolls made from shells, baskets and boomerangs.
“We believe this is the future of museums,” said Esme Ward, the director of Manchester Museum. “This is how we should be.”
Unesco hopes that Manchester will be a model for other museums to follow. Krista Pikkat, Unesco’s director for culture and emergencies, said: “It is a truly historic and moving moment. This is a case we have shared with our member states because we felt it was exemplary in many ways.”
The UK government has no plans to change the law that could then lead to movement in some of the most high-profile repatriation debates such as the Parthenon marbles and the Benin bronzes.
Campaigners say the UK is looking increasingly isolated and there is a growing movement for a change in the law.
Lord Vaizey, a former long-serving Conservative arts minister, has said the 1983 act “makes it almost impossible for UK museums to establish themselves as outward-looking, modern institutions fit for purpose in the 21st century”.
There are ways of getting around it. The V&A announced last year that it was returning the Head of Eros, a life-sized marble carving dating back to the 3rd century AD, to Turkey to be reattached to the famous Sidamara sarcophagus.
It made good a promise made by the British government in 1934 but the return is essentially a long-term loan, not an unconditional return.
Across the world, from the US to France to Germany and the Vatican, countries are repatriating objects. “Almost everywhere you look, items are being returned,” said McNaught.
In July, for example, the Netherlands repatriated nearly 500 looted objects to Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
The objects going to Sri Lanka include the famous and fabulous ruby-inlaid Cannon of Kandy dating from 1745, one of six objects from the Rijkmuseum that represented the very first return of colonial items from the museum’s collection.
The Vatican has also voiced willingness to return indigenous artefacts. “The seventh commandment comes to mind: If you steal something you have to give it back,” Pope Francis said in April.
The London-based national museums are undoubtedly hamstrung by law but that does not stop the regular calls for the return of objects.
Some cases are indisputable, say campaigners.
McNaught pointed to Ethiopian tabots that have been in the British Museum’s stores for more than 150 years.
The wood and stone tabots are altar tablets, considered by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as the dwelling place of God on Earth and the representation of the Ark of the Covenant.
“They have never been exhibited and they never will,” said McNaught. “They have never been studied. They have never been photographed. The only people who can release these items are trustees and they can’t see them either.
“So if you are a trustee and you say, ‘Let me see what all the fuss is about,’ then you can’t.”
