part iii : the letter, 31st of July 2023

Deerest James Fleamont,

We miss you. You just... up and left without a goodbye and now here I am writing you a letter after Evan told me he ran into you in a Dive bar. A DIVE BAR, JAMES! What on earth were you even doing there? Not looking to shag someone, I'd hope. I know you're not that kind of person. It's just... it's been a year, Prongs. A year. We lost you, we thought you were dead for a year until Evan found you. I hope Greece treated you well? Evan said you looked healthy. Until you froze and ran from him. But that's okay. It's okay, Prongs. Even with a year, you still need your space.

We really just did miss you. We still do. I still do.

I hope you're healthy. Are you eating enough? Do they make pistachio croissant the way you love them? What about the orange muffins? And the tea?

I miss cooking with you, if it isn't obvious.

Things have been... well, they haven't been easy. While you were gone, I mean. Regulus is... god, Reggie was so miserable, Prongs. He kept blaming himself. Said you had a fight moments before the accident and how he wouldn't ever be able to forgive himself if you ever did.. if we ever did lose you that night. He cried in relief when Evan told us you were alive and well. Lily was a bit mad at you but she was mostly relieved. We all did mourn you. Pandora said she knew you were alive before Evan found you. However she did that, I'll never know. But I'm glad she was right. Even Marlene and Dorcas seemed happy that you were alive. Regulus' friends? They're from uni. Mary seemed happy because Lily finally was. Said she wanted to meet you in person.

Peter was a bit mad at you for leaving. I was too, for a while. I think we shared the feeling of being betrayed in a way. But I can hear him say he's been missing you lately. He would've booked the closest flight to Greece the moment Evan told us the news if he hadn't been stopped by Regulus. Even after all these months, he still knew how you needed your distance, especially since Evan found you.

We still do, those that were closest to you. I do hope that you'll tell me one day where you've visited. I'd love to hear all about it.

What else did you miss? Let's see, I've um.. I've decided to enroll again. Study a different course. I knew you'd be the first to tell me how proud you were. Regulus bought a house next to me. Like, literally next to me. I guess that's the good thing about fixing our relationship as siblings. Everyone else lives down by the block. Oh! Minnie visited a few days ago asking about you. Apparently she has a niece that recognised you from one of the photos in her own home and said that you went to the café she worked at often. You always ordered the same thing. She loved that. Andy and Bella and Cissa said hi, by the way.

I miss you. I miss you every day, Prongs. I wish you were here. But I know why you can't. Which is why I'm incredibly guilty even writing this letter.

You, me and Regulus all made promises to each other when we were fifteen. We were all in love. You and Regulus were getting to know each other better and I was... probably crushing over someone I thought I'd marry then. We were happy.

We made promises that we'd be each other's best men or maid in honour once we got married. Yes, even you and Regulus promised. If I remember correctly, Regulus wanted to do a blood pact. I brushed the idea off pretty quickly. But yeah, we made those promises. I remember you being surprised that Regulus agreed but I think you knew then that even perfect relationships wouldn't last. No matter how long it was.

I never thought the day would come that you'd be right.

You have to understand, Reggie mourned you for months. He wouldn't talk, wouldn't eat much unless I was with him, he never went out. He couldn't even go outside when we went home to France because everything reminded him of you. But someone was there. He met someone who helped him heal. It wasn't even his intention to ever date Regulus, he only promised to help him heal from the pain, but.. Regulus talked with me. He made sure to talk with me first before anything. He asked me if I thought that you wouldn't consider it cheating if he was... if he was falling for someone else. I told him that I believed you would understand and support him. I knew it in myself that you would. I loved you for that, more than you know.

He told me he was scared. That he could lose him the way he lost you and he wouldn't be able to deal with that again. But then he didn't.

Barty was... is.. the best thing that's ever happened to him since you. He took care of Reggie and never rushed him, never raised his voice at him, always put him above everyone and himself. I actually cried one night thinking he was a ghost of you. They made a beautiful couple much like you and Reggie did. And he loved Reggie well.

Reggie talked to him about the ring you had designed if you two ever got married... said that he wanted it tattooed as a reminder of who you were. He even wanted antlers on his hips. Barty of course simply supported him, but.. he asked me. He talked with me and asked for the permission to have the ring. I knew then that he was planning on proposing to my brother. I told him to love Regulus well and never let him suffer the same heartbreak he suffered from your absence. He made a vow.

Regulus was happy that night. What broke him was the ring you designed come to a reality. It was beautiful. And it hadn't been a diamond that was there, no the diamonds surrounded the stone.

It was yours. The stone in the middle of the ring was yours.

And just like that, Evan called us in a rush to say that you were alive. That you were alive and well and perfectly fine and real and I... I was so, so angry, Prongs. So angry that you ran from us. So angry that you had us thinking you were dead. But fuck, I felt so relieved. I wanted to book a flight to get to you, we all did. Regulus fought Evan with all his might. But he knew you weren't ready. So we had to let you be.

But Regulus remembered the promise we all made. He came to me a few nights ago in tears with Barty in tow, taking his seat on the single-seater by the door to give us space. He remembered the promise we made all those years ago and wondered if you were still going to keep it. We weren't sure.

So, this is me asking you if you still remembered it. And if you wanted to be Regulus' best man?

I'm sorry I had to ask you this way. But I knew you. You would've been heartbroken if I hadn't asked you at all.

So... will you? Be his best man?

I hope you will. He misses you so, so much, Prongs. So much.
