i think that some of you do not understand that you are not actually required to keep up with all lore at all times and that due to the nature of minecraft smps, yes even the qsmp, being largely decentralized it is not one clean narrative where everything is cohesive and perfectly balanced. yes there is a lot of lore right now but that is not a bad thing, MOST fans are watching 1-3 povs max, and it's not an overarching plot, it's different streamers doing their own thing.

if you're not going to get annoyed at fit for introducing his own lore why would you complain about q doing the thing that is the point of the server (if it's adding a new group of streamers) or doing federation lore (the actual central storyline alongside the eggs). like, i get that keeping up with absolutely everyone is kind of a lot, because im also trying to do so, but no one is expecting that of you, you do not have minecraft roleplay homework, and moreover, quackity does not control what every streamer does or even what egg admins decide to do. it is not on him that richas and leo and many other people also have their own lore rn. that has nothing to do with him aside from if his character interacts with them, and his administrative decisions, which are likely reliant on a pre-established schedule with the new streamers, don't have anything to do with individual lore from people.

Oo what about cHannah?

I'm just getting increasingly enraptured with her. Summaries for lore are helpful but going back and rifling through old vods gives me such deeper impressions of their characters. She talked about how she's aware of how women and femininity are usually ignored and underestimated and how she actively plays up femininity in her builds and general vibe so she can catch them off guard and kill them more easily, and also how her evil lair thing under her base isn't representative of her either and is exaggerated partially as an intimidation tactic. It's interesting to me how these things aren't necessarily 'acts' but that she leans into certain aspects of her personality while masking others depending on the situation. It's also more apparent in more subtle things like her level of politeness, how much she insults people, whether or not she makes an effort not to swear, etc. I think it's fun that she is a person who will insult and argue with you more if she likes/trusts you and I think it's an interesting and subtle level of guardedness for her character.

I also think it's interesting how much she enjoys fighting. Some characters like the feeling of violence or control or vengeance but she enjoys the act of fighting and it like. is very neat to think abt seriously. When she's running around on the first day she thinks its stupid that she's fighting zombies, not because they're irritating but because she thinks they're below her to fight. She lists her ability to kill other people with pride and a main core fact about her. The context to her joining the server is her losing in a fight to Dream but beating Punz. She is actively excited to fight Sapnap when Puffy tells her about him. She gets into repeated rematch fights with Punz outside his house. I think the only other character I've seen on the SMP that actually likes fighting as much as her is maybe Techno.

I also am fascinated by what Hannah's afraid of and what she's not afraid of. She's terrified of cave spiders because they've killed her in her previous hardcore worlds. When she and puffy get trapped in a void maze trap and Puffy's freaking out she just silently brute forces her way to an exit and seems undisturbed, but she's very scared when she thinks the two of them are lost and can't get back to the main SMP. She's initially freaked out by the Egg vines and says that they look 'poisonous' but after Puffy explains it to her she is totally frightened by it. She believes that it's evil and that it can mind control people and she's cautious but not. afraid in the same way other characters are.

One last thing I looooooove how much she carries over from her old experiences. As said before she's scared of cave spiders due to a hardcore series but also carries a bunch of her stuff on her instead of storing it and makes a ton of crafting tables because of it. She calls the Central SMP 'Mid' out of habit from Minecraft Hunger Games. Her entire fighting thing and most of her pre-smp knowledge of other characters comes from bedwars and other fighting minigames. I just like when people do that

the way that he ALSO expresses an autism experience in that he stays basically the same but everyone else around him grows and matures much more quickly than he does, and suddenly for no reason that he can really figure out, everyone is unhappy with him when he's doing exactly what he's always done

the way he's so incredibly adultified, all the humans around him expecting him to behave like an adult and handle adult responsibilities, none of them seeming to realize that his immaturity and childishness is because he is a damn kid

Acquired Somehow as a child. and given to the king because the king wanted an elven servant and they figured this little foundling would be a safe pet and status symbol. had his hair cut. was literally given a name based on the color of his eyes. this is the equivalent of picking up a cat out of the dumpster and naming it patches.

that scene where Laios tries to use a food metaphor to convince him that he's hurting the people of the kingdom and he seems to understand but turns out to have gotten "i should just capture everyone in body horror forcefeeding nightmare plants forever!" from it instead is haunting and i think says a lot about what his state of mind is and also like... how he views autonomy and personhood, and, hm, where might he have gotten THOSE ideas from?

i also think it's very impressive he managed to handle the winged lion for hundreds of years, compared to Mithrun only managing a few years in a dungeon

A way to hold on to these personalities I’ve become attached to.

Especially with Richas bc I know he always said he’d disappear if his time as an egg ended. It makes me feel very bad to have a little wish that he’d change his mind.

He was always such a central personality in all of the lore and egg stuff. The creativity and cleverness and humor and mischief were always so amazing and bright. I hope his life is wonderful and that he keeps making art bc he’s a wonderful talented artist <3

It really is a kind of grief just like with the admins last time and knowing it’s over a minecraft egg(s) makes me feel weird.

the internet diverges again

(if you're a regular Garbage Day reader, a lot of this may sound very familiar to you, as i'm borrowing heavily from conclusions Ryan keeps drawing as well. my thoughts below are my own, and kinda rambling because i don't really have any strong conclusions yet, just speculation that keeps me up at night.)

feels to me like the internet is diverging yet again, into two primary modes of user experience:

the new FM radio. this is what TikTok is, and YouTube has been for a long time. it's massive, it's impossible to ingest all of it or even a fraction of it, and it moves so fast that the vast majority of people can be nothing but passive consumers. it's a lean-back, wayyy back, experience on these platforms. the key difference today, from actual FM radio, is how much the experience is personalized and molds itself in real time to you as the consumer. more and more people want to tune out of the active social media model and into the hyper-passive radio model. you don't have to even follow anybody, the content comes to you, just like the radio. sit back, relax, swipe up, watch, keep swiping, the next piece of content will be more suited to you than the last, head empty no thoughts.

the archipelago. this is what Discord is, and what Reddit subreddits are, and what Substack newsletters are, and Minecraft servers, and why people gravitate towards them. people do still want a sense of belonging, and we've all agreed lately that such a thing is way too much work on the slightly-customizable-algo-feeds of Twitter or Facebook. this is a polar opposite of the new FM radio model above, because this archipelago requires deep commitment, buy-in, and time investment. and the islands are inherently getting smaller and smaller and smaller and more nostalgic and like the message boards of the 00s. the key point being that they're independent, separate, and feel owned and controlled by their inhabitants. there can't/won't be an index of them.

i think these two paths are in stark contrast with what the predominant UX model has been over the last 15 years, which is that slightly-customizable centralized walled garden algorithmic feed that is what Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have been perfecting, and is now wholly inadequate. and those platforms keep trying to compete with TikTok, but in the wrong way. it's not about video, nor even the infinite feed, it's about the extremes of ownership and depth of involvement.

in this new context, the traditional walled garden feeds now feel like work with little reward, and TikTok doesn't feel like work at all, with lots of reward. Discord feels like deliberate work with reward. it's those different patterns of passive and active reward that feel so disrupted by TikTok, which is not a UI feature, it's the whole thing. you can't just slap a feed of recommended videos into Instagram and get the same result, now that we consumers are all more wise to it.

i'm somewhat excited about this shift because underneath these new-but-old paradigms are important shifts in our relationship to the products and our actual ownership of them. Discord relies on subscription money, not ads; they survey paying users to figure out what to build next, and it seems to work at scale and make people feel like they really own their servers. TikTok runs ads the way radio runs ads, except far more deeply personalized, because they have the mount everest of attention data (which is not the same as Facebook's relational targeting data). it's very clear that you own nothing on TikTok or YouTube, you're just a passively floating leaf in an ocean of content.

i'm also excited about this shift because it means we're in fertile territory for products, both new and existing, to figure out where they belong and if they can adapt. TikTok and Discord feel like the two opposite axis points to me, in terms of product ownership, anonymity, tracking behavior, attention economy, etc. if both worlds are feasibly sustainable, then that's great news for those of us who want to cultivate safer, smaller places to coexist on the internet. there is a whole spectrum of possibility to explore here and lean into. it comes with a myriad of new problems, but arguably, we never figured out a lot of the core problems with the old model anyway, so what's it worth?

no conclusions here, just a lot of thoughts.

Some meta talk comparing Dsmp and Qsmp below.

The Dsmp had a lot of behind the scenes issues that led to it’s eventual downfall, but two big ones were the difficulty to get involved in lore, and boredom on the server.

Lore is built on interactions with other streamers or pre-planned moments. But for there to be interaction, there needs to be people…actually playing on the server.

And if it’s been a year on a vanilla server and a majority of people are tired of building houses and gear and new silly religions and the reason the server is still going is for LORE, then streamers are going to start only logging on for lore. And if people aren’t logging on as frequently, then there’s even less motivation to log on.

And if pre-planned lore is mostly being done by small tight knit groups of people who have already done lore together, and even within those groups there’s a lack of communication, then pre-planned lore becomes rare and lore in general is unfairly hard for new members and members who couldn’t fit their character arcs easily into the bigger ones.

And this is (in part) how you end up with a lore server where nothing is happening.

I have no idea if Quackity or the Qsmp team had the Dsmp in mind while doing this, but I think it’s fascinating how the Qsmp fights against these two issues.

Dsmp obviously didn’t have the luxury of having a pre-set up storyline because the server wasn’t originally meant to be a roleplay server, but the fact that the Qsmp has a central antagonistic force controlled by a team of non-streamers (or streamers that don’t play on the server and don’t stream minecraft at least) helps SO MUCH.

The admins are constantly giving the server members shit to do. They get egg children they need to take care of, they get puzzles, they get random attacks by codes, they get weird missions from Cucurucho, they get Lucky Ducks, they get sent to prison, they get unhelpful AIs that will flirt with them instead of giving the inside info the everyone wants.

Like The Maze is it’s own kind of misery and maybe not the most entertaining thing the admins have cranked out, but I think we all would prefer hours of the maze to streamers getting bored and avoiding the server for months until the next event.

The eggs are evil genius for keeping players on the server, lmao. I remember during the last months of the Dsmp there was talk of potentially having required amount of time to be played on the server and everyone here on Dsmpblr was joking about how that would be enforced. The Qsmp straight up did the ultimatum of “Log on long enough to do these tasks by this deadline or either your character’s child will die, OR, one of your fellow server members will be forced to pick up the slack for you and you will be at risk of being called a Shitty Parent.”

Having a team of people control the lore makes it super accesible, too. If a streamer has a lore idea, they go to the admins for it and the admins put it into context of the setting and help them out with it. Pre-planned lore still happens between streamers, but this set up puts a lot less of a burden on new members, and makes things way easier for streamers who like doing solo lore.

It also gives opportunities for members who haven’t done lore together to suddenly be in Situations. Like the egg parenting, or Cellbit getting sent to watch Jaiden do her task, or Roier, Slime and Tubbo getting randomly(?) selected to do the fever dream maze run.

Again, it’s a little unfair to compare the Dsmp to the Qsmp because the two servers are from two different times and were created with very different plans in mind. And the Qsmp still has it’s own issues, it’s not perfect. But it’s still really interesting to see what works and what doesn’t.

huge fan of how they did this 1.20 update so far. the changes really do feel like “they are doing things to make minecraft more minecraft”, just adding several small things that makes everything feel nicer is exactly what i want from an update. just… small details! huge fan of that! also a big fan of them going “we are only going to show you features that are done”. it does mean we don’t actually get to know what they’re planning until it’s about to be in a snapshot, which will be an adjustment, but it’ll prevent all the nonsense that happened around 1.19, so I’m a fan. overall, like how 1.20 is looking!

“Alright,” Jevin says, “now you just have to give the egg basket back.”

Grian stares at him with big, black, soulful eyes, and holds the basket closer to himself. “...give... you... the eggs...?”

Jevin closes his eyes and mentally counts to five before opening them again. “Yeah. That was the point of the game, right? Collect the eggs and then give them back to prove you’d found them.”

Grian continues to stare.

“So you hand me the basket...”

“Are... are you keeping an eye on them?” Grian asks.

“Keeping an eye on the eggs.”

“Well, it’s a dangerous world out there,” Grian says. “You never know when some maniac with TNT might show up. Probably best to just keep these in my ne- base. Keep these in my base.”

“A maniac with TNT?“ says Jevin, in a tone of voice he hopes conveys exactly who the maniac with TNT normally is on the server.

“You never know,” Grian says. “You’ve seen the eggs now. You know I found them. Really, what do you need all those eggs for? Surely you won’t miss these, right?”

Jevin sighs. “Yes, but I need the eggs to prove you didn’t cheat. You can’t win unless you turn them in.”

Grian stares blankly at Jevin, big black eyes watering as he tries to decide between winning (a thing Grian is very bad at giving up on) and, presumably, some stupid bird instinct that’s refusing to let him let go of the eggs. Jevin’s not sure which one is winning. He is sure, however, that he is slightly regretting making the egg hunt actually use eggs.

Because, he thinks wryly, it’s hardly just Grian.

“Jevin,” Doc says, landing on the platform to the egg hunt central area. Grian makes a sound somewhere between a hiss and a squawk and pulls his shulker full of carefully-padded and protected eggs closer to his chest. “I have found all of my eggs.”

“Excellent! Now, if you’ll hand them over -”

Doc is holding a shulker close to his chest. “Give you my eggs? Don’t be ridiculous.”

...the worst part, Jevin thinks, as he tries to figure out how to negotiate with a bunch of hybrids who haven’t slept in too long and therefore don’t realize they’re being irrational, is that the others are almost certainly going to insist on playing again next year. Something about optimal hiding spots. Next year, though, he swears: he’s not calling them eggs.

general writing advice, actually: you don’t need an excuse beyond “BUT WOULDN’T THIS BE COOL” to write something into your fic. write things in solely because they make you cackle with the delight of a 12-year-old-boy playing with his dinosaur toys. it’s fun and there’s nothing stopping you or any of us at all any longer.
