Arkhelios Adventures

“Theo, I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you. You have to believe me. I’m so sorry.”

Ulyssa tried to pour as much regret as she could in her voice, so that her godson would understand how much he meant to her.

“Did you get my gifts? I haven’t missed a birthday or Winterfest. I miss you and your sisters so much. It’s great to see you. You’ve grown so much. You’re so tall.”

Theo could see Oliver off to the side, watching this reunion closely. Not only did he have to see the woman his dad cheated with unannounced, but she had to embarrass him in front of the queen’s brother, the most popular guy at the richest school. Theo had had plans for the entire evening. He’d go meet Oliver’s family, eat dinner, work on their project for the witches’ council and hopefully hit things off enough to have some of Oliver’s popularity rub off on him.

At thirteen, Theo was awkward and clumsy and insecure. It had been a stroke of luck to be paired with Oliver. Sure, Adam was Miruna’s half-brother, but that didn’t mean anything in the hierarchy of teenagers.

“What are you even doing here?” Theo demanded, trying to sound authoritative for their audience. “What do you want? You can’t buy my forgiveness, if that’s what you want. It’s not going to happen. My parents almost divorced because of you.”

“I...I’m sorry.”

Ulyssa didn’t know what else to say. After all this time and all the things she’d practiced saying in her head, nothing seemed adequate. Here she was, face to face with her godson and all he could do was glare at her.

“You know, you can’t just blame the woman for an affair,” Oliver remarked with a smirk. “It sounds like your dad’s just as guilty.”

Theo cringed under the critical gaze of Oliver, and Ulyssa could see where this was going. She’d been to high school and knew the game well. There was no way this scenario was going to end well for her. The best she could hope for was to exit without damaging her relationship any further.

“My dad is paying for what he did,” Theo snapped. “I don’t want to talk about it anymore! I don’t want to talk to her! Let’s just start our stupid project already. Why is she even here?”

“Hey, I couldn’t help but hear some shouting. Is everything okay?”

A man from the next yard over suddenly appeared from their front door, sounding concerned. If the ground could suddenly swallow him whole, Theo would have been appreciative. Not only was the popular boy staring at him like he was an idiot, but their arguing had attracted the neighbours and even more attention.

“We’re fine. Just a misunderstanding.”

With a practiced movement, Ulyssa steadied the tiara on her head and retreated back in the house without another word. She would regroup with Jorah and continue her plan. Theo was just a complication, a distraction. He wasn't ready to talk to her yet and Ulyssa could wait. Surely he'd grow out of his anger one day. His parents hadn't divorced and from what she'd heard, they were happy. It would just take Theo some time to forgive her, that's all. She had come here to focus on Claudia and she was going to find something to use as blackmail. This would all be worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that Claudia wasn't going to make Ulyssa's life difficult.

"Is that lady bothering you? I can call my mom and she can scare her away for you. The people next door are pushovers."

Theo turned towards the fence to find the owner of the voice. Leaning casually against the fence was a gorgeous guy who looked to be around Theo's age. His smile was soft and lazy and his eyes were kind. He beamed at Theo, flashing straight white teeth. Theo stood in awe for a moment, too distracted from staring at the boy to even reply.

"Hey, Theodore! The guy asked you a question!" Oliver called, jolting Theo from his hormone induced stupor.

"Theodore's a cute name," the boy practically purred, eyeing Theo appreciatively. "I'm Ewan."

Theo took a deep breath and tried not to let his hormones govern his life. He had a boyfriend after all and they planned on being together forever.

"It's not Theodore, it's Theo," he corrected them. "I can't tell you what it's short for or witches or demons could use that information to hurt me."

Ewan's face soured at the mention of witchcraft, something that didn't go unnoticed to Theo.

"Keep your secrets, I don't care. I would never worry about witches. They're too pretentious to think about anything besides themselves anyway. You're safe with me, Theodore. I don't associate with witches if I can help it."

Theo blushed at the repeated name and the heated glance this boy was giving him. Was he flirting with Theo? Had he just given him a nickname? This whole puberty thing was happening far too fast and wildly out of his control. He had a boyfriend but he was also pretty sure this amazingly attractive guy was flirting with him. Was it cheating to talk to him? He didn't want to be a cheater like his parents, but it was hard to pull himself away from the electricity he could feel radiating between him and Ewan.

"I have a boyfriend!" Theo blurted, hoping that it was the right call to make. Beside him, both Oliver and Ewan laughed.

"He's a lucky guy," Ewan said charitably while Oliver groaned.

"You two have fun, I'm going to put my books away. I don't need to listen to two babies trying to flirt."

"I'll be in to help you with the project I'm a second," Theo called and Ewan rolled his eyes dramatically.

"Take however long you want, I'm not starting this dumb project on my own. I don't care if Master Maricourt turns me into a toad for failing it, I'm accepted at college anyway. I don't need this."

Theo frowned. Well he needed the good grade. And the admiration of Adam's father was definitely important too.

"Hear hear," Ewan laughed. "That guy's an asshole. Do whatever makes you happy."

"Pleasing the council does make me happy," Theo insisted. "Master Maricourt is smart and talented, just like his son."

"Who, me?" Ewan seemed to be caught off guard by the comment, looking momentarily confused. "He's never once tried to see me all my life, I don't know why you think he'd try now."

Theo frowned.

"No, Master Maricourt, Ewan Maricourt. I'm dating his son, Adam."

A dark look quickly passed over Ewan's face as he thought about Theo's words. Theo tried to break down what Ewan's admission could mean, but his brain fought against him. It was clear what the implications of what Ewan had said meant, but Theo struggled to believe it.

Adam didn't have a brother. He had one twin sister and three half-sisters. Adam was the one who studied late into the night to live up to family expectations. This guy openly admitted to hating magic and magic users. In the years that Theo had known Adam's family, there had never once been even the slightest hint of another child. Either this boy was lying or a great deception had been created somewhere.

"Theodore, why do you think my name's Ewan?" the boy asked, raising a curious eyebrow. "I'm named after my dad. My mom thought it would make him interested in raising me, but clearly that didn't work out as planned. Like I said, the guy's an asshole. His son probably is too for being raised by him. Sorry that you're already involved with him, but my half-brother probably sucks. Just keep that in mind for when he breaks your heart. I'd treat you a lot better."

Theo's face burned with a mix of anger, horror and confusion. Who was this guy to talk about Adam that way?

"You don't even know him," Theo snapped. "You said you've never met Adam, so you can't know what he's like! He's smart and compassionate and funny! He'd never hurt me! You're just jealous."

Ewan shrugged indifferently.

"Whatever you say, Theodore. I'll take your word for it. I guess he's a great guy. Do let me know if he does turn out to be as fake as our dad though. You're pretty cute. I'd have no problem showing you how much better I am."

Theo's mouth hung open as his brain short-circuited trying to process this conversation. Adam supposedly had a brother. That brother was unashamedly hitting on his boyfriend and making accusations about his father. The most popular guy in Pleasantview had heard much of their conversation until he found it too tedious to pretend to care. Theo was going to fail this project and bring the same chaos to Adam's family that usually reigned in Theo's.

"Claudia, is that you? You look incredible. I love the hair. Its so different from your portrait on the simoleon. Very bold."

Theo turned around to find the Pleasantview monarch standing behind him, staring intensely at the fence line.

"Max. It's good to see you," she stated, the hint of a smile tugging at her lips. "How have you been? It's been ages."

For the first time, Theo could see a vulnerability in the queen that she didn't dare show to anyone else. She was hard to read, but if Theo had to guess, this surprise encounter had shaken her.

"I've been busy," replied the man on the other side of the fence. "Not as busy as you. Congratulations on the engagement."

"Thanks, we're happy to finally settle down," Claudia said. "I've made Miruna wait too long already. She wants to start a family and I need a spare for that heir of mine, of course."

She chuckled slightly to herself and Max smiled back at her. There seemed to be a bond between the two of them that remained unseen, hidden over the years.

Theo stared at the man carefully. He didn't look anything like Victoriana, so he probably wasn't her parent, but clearly something had happened between the two adults.

"Miruna's a lucky woman."

Silence hung in the air as the two adults lost themselves in each other's gaze and Theo and Ewan stared at each other awkwardly.

"That's my stepbrother," Ewan whispered to a confused Theo. "My mom married his dad when I was just a kid. He's had a thing for the queen forever. He's hopeless."

"They grew up together and went to the same school until she got transferred to the rich school and left him behind."

"She was his date for our parents' wedding, but she was way out of his league. She was the rich, powerful queen of the country and he was just the boy next door. Teenage love doesn't last long, Theodore, you'll see soon enough. You and I could have fun together though, I'll give you my number."

Theo's face felt scalding hot as Ewan reached for his phone and tapped in his phone number.

I'll just keep it in case Adam needs it to verify that he has a brother. It's not cheating to accept a number from someone. I'm not going to call it ever.

"My parents were dating in high school," he weakly protested, staring at the newest entry in his contact list. "They're married now with a bunch of kids. Adam and I are going to be the same, you'll see."

Ewan rolled his eyes.

"Ugh, maybe you shouldn't call me," he sighed. "You sound like you're about five years old. I prefer more mature guys, even if you do look the way you do.”

"I'm never calling you," Theo insisted. "And I'm thirteen, I'm incredibly mature. More mature than you who hits on guys in relationships!"

Ewan shrugged casually, which only bothered Theo more. Why was this guy teasing him and acting like Theo's indignation was just an annoyance? It was infuriating.

"Suit yourself. See you around, Theodore."

With that, Ewan turned and walked back into the house next door. He didn't even turn around once to check if Theo was watching him, which of course he was. As much as he hated to admit it, Ewan looked just as good walking away as he did flashing that wicked smile. Beside him, the queen and her ex-friend were busy catching up with each other and Oliver was long gone.
