Frank can you explain how a generator works rq
I am not qualified to explain this at anything other than a very basic level.
Here's how it's used in Frank, anyway.
Our model is set up to produce a sequence with a variable length, where the length is selected by two numbers, the "past" and "future" probe values (p and f, respectively). If p < f, we want a long sequence. If f < p, we want a short one. That's a simple way of stating the problem.
Okay, now imagine you have an existing text like "It's hard to describe it in language." or "She hit her brother with a water balloon." or something. Then you set p to the length of the text, plus some number representing how much context you want the model to have (maybe 2, maybe 3, depending on the model) and you get a number.
Now you set f to a number representing the future text you want (maybe 5, maybe 3, and so forth).
Finally, you give the model the p and f and tell it to write a text with a variable length from p to f. "Variable length" means it's not a fixed number but a value chosen randomly.
There are two parts of our model here: an encoder and a generator. The encoder represents the text we want to add to as a fixed-length text. This is just a giant matrix with a row for every word. For each word, the matrix specifies its appearance in the text. So the matrix says how many times the word "dog" occurs, and so forth. The rows don't repeat (you can't have "dog" twice in a row) and the number of rows is huge, because our encoder has to keep track of hundreds of thousands of different words.
Note that it's super boring to make this work with text that you already have: all you have to do is feed the words in the text into the encoder. The really interesting part is, how do we make the model make new words.
For this part, we have something called the generator. The generator is set up with some kind of probability distribution over the output space. The output space is the set of strings that have a length between p and f.
Instead of just making strings randomly, the generator looks at the encoder and the words around the p mark, and generates new strings based on how they would fit with the existing text. So if the word "dog" comes up at p and we want the new string to contain "dog," well, we have to figure out which kind of "dog" are we going to choose.
In the GPT model, the generator is a relatively simple thing: it's just connected to the encoder in a way that enforces the output probability distribution. But in the transformer model, the thing is much more complex. It still works the same way, but instead of just choosing randomly from the distribution, it chooses from the distribution based on the other words around the p mark. The idea is that the generator cares not only about the p mark, but about its context.
The model also has a pool of words, which are essentially just dictionaries, that can be used to fill in the words from p to f with words from the dictionary. A bit like a Mad Libs game. We pick from these dictionaries to fill in the blanks, instead of picking from the distribution directly. So even when you feed it a text it knows, it does a "random walk" like a Markov chain, bouncing from dictionary word to dictionary word instead of just adding text to the end.
It's more complicated than that, and I'm sure I missed some steps and am failing to explain something important, but that's the very basic overview.

THE COURAGE OF SYMBOL
Between t 0 and when you buy that yacht, someone is going to ask if any of your code legally belongs to anyone else, and you rule the world. In addition to being the right sort of experience, one way to make people happy. I was a kid. Better to make a lot of money to us. Investors' main question when judging a very early startup is whether you've made a compelling product. Maybe it's because you haven't made what they want. When you try to guess where your program is slow, and memories and disks were tiny. Work for a VC fund? So I think you should make users the test, just as it had to learn to value common stocks in the early 20th century. In that respect the Cold War teaches the same lesson as World War II and, for that matter, how much difficult ground have you put between yourself and potential pursuers? Winning depended not on doing good work will matter more than dressing up—or advertising, which is almost unheard of among VCs. None of which I could at that moment remember!
It may take a while for the market to learn how startups work. Yahoo and Google. They'd probably vary in size by orders of magnitude. But if ephemeralization is one of the top VC firms, and even their business model was wrong and would probably change three times before they got it right. Instead of accumulating money slowly by being paid a regular wage for fifty years, but they're not willing to let you earn $3 million over fifty years, but they're not willing to let you work so hard that you endanger your health. The price is that the companies of the future will probably look something like this well into adulthood. Beware, though, my filters do themselves embody a kind of summer program. What would happen if they diverged to see the underlying reality. It is the proverbial fishing rod, rather than their combined length, as the divisor in calculating spam probabilities.
If IBM had required an exclusive license, as they call it over there, but these are likely to be pretty average. It doesn't add; it multiplies. But the similarities feel greater than the differences. They're not looking for finished, smooth presentations. But in medieval Europe something new happened. Of course, you don't have a house or much stuff, but also because you're less likely to have names that specify explicitly because they aren't that they are republics. Get ramen profitable. Here is a brief sketch of the economic proposition. 071706355 There are a couple pieces of good news here.
I used to think it was. The reason you've never heard of him is probably a psychopath. 047225013 standardization 0. If you're a nerd, you can ratchet down the coolness of the idea far enough to compensate. You have to get it from someone else. What would make them say wow? Something that a Lisp hacker might handle by pushing a symbol onto a list becomes a whole file of classes and methods. It's easy to convince investors you're worth talking to further. And even within the world of content-based filtering will leave the spammer room to make.
A url with an ip address is of course an extremely incriminating sign, except in the mail of a few sysadmins. We would have sold. In both cases, what it all comes down to is users. The Bubble was a California phenomenon. She writes: Hilbert had no patience with mathematical lectures which filled the students with facts but did not teach them how to frame a problem and solve it. They are like the corporate boss that you can't choose the point on the curve that you want to write out your whole presentation beforehand and memorize it, that's ok. $300 a month seemed like a lot of hours. As Fred Brooks pointed out, small groups are intrinsically more productive, because the internal friction in a group grows as the square of its size. The fifteen most interesting words are as follows: let g 2 or gethash word good 0 b or gethash word good 0 b or gethash word bad 0 unless g b 5 max.
With so much at stake, they have to run later. The founders were experienced guys who'd done startups before and who'd just succeeded in getting millions from one of the most egregious spam indicators. We are all richer for knowing about penicillin, because we're less likely to have serious relationships. You get up in the morning, go to some set of buildings, and do things that will make the company seem valuable. Except in a few cases to buy a lot of the brain of the filter. A great deal has been written about the causes of the Industrial Revolution. Curiously, a filter based on word pairs would be in effect a Markov-chaining text generator running in reverse. So being cheap is almost interchangeable with iterating rapidly. Getting rich means you can stop treading water. The puffed-up companies that went public during the Bubble robbed their companies by granting themselves options doesn't mean options are a bad idea.

11, 24, 49, and 50 from the studyblr asks :D
11. Current favourite class and why?
I’m currently out of term time, so I suppose my current favourite class is none of them 😭 Though I suppose last year out of the 8 courses we studied, Probability was by far my favourite one; it was just so interesting and the questions they would ask us would just have the funnest scenarios. In our exam this year, two of the probability questions were about the lengths of goblin arms, and about a woman who’s about to get caught by the mafia, and has to gamble to earn extra money!
Next term though, I’m really looking forward to Markov Chains and Quantum Mechanics– conceptually they seem so interesting and they have such cool applications in the real world too! I’m also keen to see what Methods will be like; at its core it’s a course about solving differential equations and I can’t wait to see what sort of cool dynamical systems you can apply them to!
24. Describe your perfect study environment.
Large, quiet study rooms in libraries, without a doubt. Ones with antique wooden bookshelves with equally antique tables to work on. Heavy rain, or a calm, winter evening atmosphere, work lit up by the library desk lamp. Although the area is public, there’s a nice sense of serenity and privacy; to me, it’s just me and my work.
The place I’ve found that most closely mimics my perfect study environment is the Victoria Public Library in Melbourne. Absolutely breathtaking. No rain unfortunately, but the grandeur of the reading room makes up for everything it lacks. The place just exudes education. I’ve had a brief look at the Cambridge University Library too, it has a massive reading room that I feel I would love, but it seems very hard to find a free spot there unfortunately 💔
49. How many hours do you spend on academics per day?
Not enough- especially since it’s the holidays at the moment! Apart from lectures, which took up 2 hours a day during term time, I want to say I spent about 3 hours each day doing productive work? Though in all honesty much of that work wouldn’t have been very productive. Now that I have nothing really to occupy my time with, it definitely fluctuates between no time at all, and 6 hours of just engorgement in a certain academic topic!
50. What’s something more important to you than school?
At the moment I kinda wanna find a nice romantic relationship, though I’ve been having a decent amount of trouble actually finding one! Other than that, academics and school hold nothing to maintaining strong, secure relationships with friends and family. I’ve seen university put quite the strain on some of my friendships before, especially during exam period, and I want to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.

Bus HVAC energy consumption test method based on HVAC unit
In this study, passenger comfort and the air pollution status of the micro-environmental conditions in an air-conditioned bus were investigated through questionnaires, field measurements, and a numerical simulation. As a subjective analysis, passengers' perceptions of indoor environmental quality and comfort levels were determined from questionnaires. As an objective analysis, a numerical simulation was conducted using a discrete phase model to determine the diffusion and distribution of pollutants, including particulate matter with a diameter air quality and dissatisfactory thermal comfort conditions in Jinan's air-conditioned bus system. To solve these problems, three scenarios (schemes A, B, C) were designed to alter the ventilation parameters. According to the results of an improved simulation of these scenarios, reducing or adding air outputs would shorten the time taken to reach steady-state conditions and weaken the airflow or lower the temperature in the cabin. The airflow pathway was closely related to the layout of the air conditioning. Scheme B lowered the temperature by 0.4 K and reduced the airflow by 0.01 m/s, while scheme C reduced the volume concentration of PM 10 to 150 μg/m 3 . Changing the air supply angle could further improve the airflow and reduce the concentration of PM 10 . With regard to the perception of airflow and thermal coA system of air-conditioning using Lithium Bromide absorption system is used as an alternative refrigerant that will not pollute the atmosphere. Lithium Bromide is a chemical salt soluble in water.
There is a big difference between vapour compression system and LiBr 2 absorption system. The absorption air conditioning system is made of a generator, a condenser, an evaporator and an absorber with necessary pumps and piping. When LiBr 2 solution is heated under low pressure, water will evaporate first, while LiBr 2 will remain in the solution and will become more concentrated. The water is the refrigerant in this system. The generator, where the water is vapourised, is heated using an electric heater or solar energy. The LiBr 2 weak solution under low pressure in the generator is heated and the water evaporate into vapour. The vapour produced is then cooled in the condenser and then expanded into the evaporator. The refrigerant (water) in evaporator change phase from liquid to vapour by absorbing heat from cooling water, which flow in the coil in the evaporator. The chilled water obtained is then pumped into the fan coil, which will be used in conditioning the passenger area of the bus. The water vapour from the evaporator is absorbed into LiBr 2 solution in the absorber, forming a weak solution of LiBr 2 . the weak solution from the absorber is then pumped back to the generator to regenerate. The absorption system does not use compressor, but requires pumps that need lower input power compared to that of a compressor. The system is considered as a new application for the bus. This will have great potential and will be environmentally friendly. The model in this study will be used for calculation of the cooling load for the bus.
Comfortable journey with commercial buses is an essential goal of transportation companies. An air-conditioning system can play an important role for this comfortable journey but it can put extra load on the engine and extra cost in the fuel consumption. The purpose of this work is to increase the performance of air-conditioning system of the buses by reducing the load on the engine and fuel consumption. Using a two-phase ejector as an expansion valve can increase the coefficient of performance (COP) of the air-conditioning system. An improvement in the COP can reduce the empty vehicle weight and fuel consumption of buses. Two-phase ejector dimensions can be determined using the empirical methods available in the literature. In this paper, the two-phase ejector dimensions of air conditioning system for a bus are calculated using the analytical and numerical methods. First of all, the thermodynamic analysis of the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle with a two-phase ejector is performed, and then the ejector dimensions are subsequently determined. The cooling loads of the midibus and bus with R134a as a refrigerant are assumed to be 14 kW and 32 kW, respectively. The total length of the two-phase ejector for the midibuses and buses due to these cooling loads, are computed to be 480.8 mm and 793.1 mm, respectively. Also, an experimental setup is installed on a truck air conditioner to turn it into the ejector air conditioning system to validate theoretical results with the experimental study. - Highlights: • Determination of two-phase ejector dimensions of a bus air-conditioning system. • Thermodynamic analysis of the two-phase ejector cooling system. • Experimental study on a midibus air conditioner using two-phase ejector.
A novel control strategy to improve energy efficiency and to enhance passengers' thermal comfort of a new roof top bus multiple circuit air conditioning (AC) system operating on partial load conditions is presented. A novel strategy for automatic control of the AC system was developed based on numerous experimental test runs at various operating conditions, taking into account energy saving and thermal comfort without sacrificing the proper cycling rate of the system compressor. For this task, more than 50 test runs were conducted at different set point temperatures of 21, 22 and 23 C. Fanger's method was used to evaluate passenger thermal comfort, and the system energy consumption was also calculated. A performance comparison between that of the conventional AC system and that of the newly developed one has been conducted. The comparison revealed that the adopted control strategy introduces significant improvements in terms of thermal comfort and energy saving on various partial load conditions. Potential energy saving of up to 31.6% could be achieved. This results in a short payback period of 17 months. It was found from the economic analysis that the new system is able to save approximately 20.0% of the life cycle cost. Air-conditioners (AC) usually consume the most electricity among all of the auxiliary components in an electric bus, over 30% of the battery power at maximum. On-board passengers carried by the electric bus are important but random heat sources, which are obsessional disturbances for the cabin temperature control and energy management of the AC system. This paper aims to improve the AC energy efficiency via passenger amount variation analysis and forecast in a model predictive control (MPC) framework. Three forecasting approaches are proposed to realize the passenger amount variation prediction in real-time, namely, stochastic prediction based on Monte Carlo, radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) prediction, and Markov-chain prediction. A sample passenger number database along a typical bus line in Beijing is built for passenger variation pattern analysis and forecast. A comparative study of the above three prediction approaches with different prediction lengths (bus stops in this case) is conducted, from both the energy consumption and temperature control perspectives. A predictive AC controller is developed, and evaluated by comparing with Dynamic Programming (DP) and a commonly used rule-based control strategy.
Simulation results show that all the three forecasting methods integrated within the MPC framework are able to achieve more stable temperature performance. The energy consumptions of MPC with Markov-chain prediction, RBF-NN forecast and Monte Carlo prediction are 6.01%, 5.88% and 5.81% lower than rule-based control, respectively, on the Beijing bus route studied in this paper.
This paper presents a test method for determination of energy consumption of bus HVAC units. The energy consumption corresponds to a bus engine fuel consumption increase during the bus hvac parts operation period. The HVAC unit energy consumption is determined from the unit input power, which is measured under several levels of bus engine speeds and at different levels of testing heat load in the laboratory environment. Since the bus engine fuel consumption is incrementally induced by powering an HVAC unit, the results are subsequently recalculated to the unit fuel consumption under the defined road cycles in terms of standardized diesel engine. The method is likewise applicable either for classic or electric HVAC units with a main consumer (compressor or high voltage alternator) mechanically driven directly from the bus engine and also for electric HVAC units supplied from an alternative electric energy source in case of hybrid or fully electric buses.

Markov Chain Monte Carlo method
Smart thing.... This is in context of phylogenetic tree construction, used to generate a forest of sample trees with the property that the probability of finding a tree in the forest is proportional to its likelihood x prior probability. Handy in Bayesian clustering methods!
It begins by calculating the likelihood of a test tree, L1. It then moves to a nearby tree in the tree-space, which slightly differs, for example in terms of branch lengths, change in rate parameters (such as substitution rate) or topology change. Likelihood for this tree is calculated, L2.
L1 and L2 will be slightly different. The new tree is accepted or rejected according to the Metrobolis Algorithm:
If L2 > L1 --> L2 is accepted
If L2 < L1 --> L2 is accepted by a probability of L2 / L1.
If L2 is accepted, it becomes the new tree.
This means that both uphill and downhill moves in terms of likely trees are allowed and may prevent us ending up stuck on a small local top with a bad view - sometimes we’ve got to go the distance to reach gold.
The intricat beauty of this algorithm is that the downhill moves are allowed at a “correct” probability, so that the equilibrium of probabilities of observing the different trees are given by the likelihoods. It is a property known as detailed balance. It originates from statistical physics where the equilibrium distribution is the thermodynamic equilibrium at a fixed temperature and the likelihoods of the states are functions of energies of the states.
Anyways: the art of developing a good MCMC method lays in the chice of move set. A balance must be found: if changes are very small, the likelihood ratio of the states will be close to 1 and the move has a good chance of being accepted. A very large number of moves would be required to alter the tree significantly and to obtain a diverse forest of trees.
On the other hand, if changes are very large, the likelihood ratio of the states will be far from 1 and the likelihood of accepting a downhill move will be very small.
As everything always comes down to; balance <3

quick markov chain generator deetz for @sandshrewvian (and anyone who wants to put text files in a blender and automatically generate, say, fic, or shitposts). using Markovify, since it tucks most of the confusing stuff behind a curtain and for me worked instantly out of the box.
Grab yourself a Python. if Mac, download mac. If windows, you’re almost certainly using a 64 bit install, but if you’re unsure just check in settings. if you don’t know what a tarball is, use the installer. it installs.
if you’re on Linux why are you reading this you should know how to use the terminal
Crack open Command Prompt (or whatever the Mac equiv is)
Newer versions of Python come packaged with Pip, which is a utility that you can tell to manage the programs on your computer. install, update, uninstall, ya feel.
specifically “pip install __” is ‘hey Pip install this thing for me’. so type into the prompt:
pip install markovify
(hit enter)
if it complains about dependencies, grab those and try again. like if you can’t proceed bc you’re missing asdfhjg, then pip install asdfhjg. if Pip isn’t finding them, hmu and we can figure it out together
right you so got the thing that makes the thing go
on the Markovify github, there’s some sample code. there’s more that you can do with this script but the basics do the thing you want. copy and paste that code into the simplest possible word editor. wordpad, notepad, whatever, just no Word or w/e bc it tends to add in a bunch of extra information and i’m not saying you Can’t but best to avoid that potential headache
like u can change the number of sentences or the number of words u can play around w it if you want but it does the thing out the box
pick where you want this thing to be - documents, a general fic folder, a specific This Thing folder. try to avoid putting it in something deeply nested bc you’ll be typing the location out by hand. imo it’s easiest to keep the script and the text file in the same location. save there as “yourfile.py”. the ‘py’ tells the computer to run it as a python script. like a magic spell where u gotta have the right faux-latin in for it to work. gotta be .py
and yeah i forget how some people are Bizarre Goblins who can focus enough to write in Word, but if you do write in Word, re-save the source file u wanna bonk as simple text. .txt. yanno. if things go wonky down the line, try copy-pasting into a less-complicated word processor. i like Atom but Notepad works fine
with Markov chains, the longer the better - it’s basically gathering information on what words or letters follow what other words or letters. if “a” comes up, then it looks to see what comes after “a” in your source text, or corpus, and picks one. and if “dog” gets picked, it looks for what comes after ‘dog’, and picks one, and so on. the bigger and more varied the corpus, the more fun you’ll have.
replace the “path/to/file“ with where your file is. if they’re in the same folder, you can just put “file.txt”
the example code shows how to do two things: post five sentences, any length, and post 3 sentences, twitter-limit. feel free to fuck around with any of them, but i’d recommend commenting one or the other out with a # in front of each line of the thing. this tells your Compooper to ignore those words; anything #’d out you have saved for later in case you need it, but it won’t be translated
back to the Command Prompt
if you have put it anywhere down the path: find the path. if it is, for ex, somewhere inside documents, you want to Change Directories, so type ‘cd documents’, ie Change Directory To Documents. if it’s in a folder inside Documents, ‘cd that_folder’. repeat as necessary.
run the thing by typing ‘yourfile.py’ and hitting enter
enjoy
(to run again, hit the Up arrow on your keyboard and the command will be brought back up)
for True Auto Shitposts there’s a whole buncha nonsense - i know you can post directly to Tumblr, but far as i can tell it’s easier to schedule generated posts to Twitter and then crosspost with IFTTT. if you’re interested, hmu, i’m an idiot but successfully copied a script to keep @thedalekchef running

How I Attempted To Mathematically Model the Spread of Memes on the Internet, pt 1.
This is my first ever /actual/ Tumblr post, so first of all, let’s hope I’m doing this right.
I’ll make my introduction fairly brief as to get to the mathematics ASAP. This was part of my senior project for my mathematics B.S. (which I am very close to completing!). I presented parts of this research at the Michigan MAA Section Meeting in April of 2017. And I am really excited to share what I found in a more casual setting (rather than in a formal paper for my class or a conference presentation).
So let’s get to it, eh?
For the first installment of this series, I want to touch on two main things:
Why Did I Decide To Do This?
Things You Need To Know Before We Can Get To The Cool Stuff (I Know, I Know, But You Need To Know These Things)
Why Did I Decide To Do This?
My senior mathematics capstone course was on the topic of Markov chains. The main purpose of this class was for each student to complete an individual research project. I struggled for quite some time to determine what I wanted to do my project on. I eventually settled on disease modeling, but found myself disinterested with the material. I credit one visit to my advisor’s office for what sparked in me the most academic drive and passion for a project I’ve ever had.
I walked in, planning on just talking about my ideas for my disease modeling project. My advisor suggested that I could use this sort of model to work with other things, and me, being the Internet-addicted smart ass that I am, asked, “Like memes?”
So here we are.
Things You Need To Know Before We Can Get To The Cool Stuff
First, I’m assuming that you are familiar with the following concepts from linear algebra:
Matrix algebra
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
Diagonalizing matrices
For the sake of time and length, I leave reviewing those as an exercise to the reader. Ha, I’ve always wanted to say that.
So I’ll begin with Markov chains.
A Markov chain is a stochastic process where the probability of being in the current state is dependent solely on the previous state you were in.
What’s an example of this?
Suppose you are playing a game on a rectangular board of 7 squares. Your piece starts on the center square. For each move, you have a probability of 1/3 of moving to the left (which I'll denote L) and a probability of 2/3 of moving to the right (which I'll denote R). If you get all the way to the right, you win! However, if you get all the way to the left, you lose (*sadface*). Once you reach either the leftmost square or the rightmost square, you can’t move out of them. We’ll talk about this in more detail later, but these are what we call absorbing states.
See below for the starting position.
Tumblr media
Say your first four moves are R, L, R, R.
Tumblr media
Your probability of moving to the right is still 2/3 and your probability of moving to the left is still 1/3. Much like the honey badger, the probabilities don’t care that you moved R, L, R, R already; they are still the same as before. Examining this as a Markov chain is nice because it allows us to answer two important and interesting questions:
What is the probability of winning after a certain number of moves?
What is the average number of moves it takes until I win?
I’ll attempt to answer question 1, and I’ll leave question 2 as an exercise.
In order to find the probability, we must first create a transition matrix. The transition matrix, $T$, is a matrix where $T_{i,j}$ is the probability of getting to the $i^{th}$ state from the $j^{th}$ state. In this example, each state is a square on our board. Our transition matrix looks something like this:
Tumblr media
Let’s discuss!
We note that every column sums to 1. This makes sense! We have to move every turn, so the sum of the different probabilities of leaving each state should equate to exactly 1. We also note that $T_{1,1}$ and $T_{7,7}$ are both equal to 1. These are our absorbing states! Absorbing states are those states where the probability of returning to itself is exactly 1. So, you’re essentially trapped (mwa-ha-ha) in these absorbing states.
How does this help us find the probability of winning?
Excellent question! If we want to find the probability of being in the $i^{th}$ state after starting in the $j^{th}$ state after n moves, we simply find $T^n_{i,j}$. This can be done using your favorite computing software (I personally opt for SageMath), or if you’re feeling particularly ambitious, you can do it by hand (but I don’t recommend this, for the sake of your health).
So if I want to find the probability of winning the game in at most, say, 10 moves, I would look at $T^{10}_{7,4}$, as this entry shows the probability of ending in the 7th state (win!) from the 4th state. Additionally, I could also find the probability of losing after at most 10 moves by looking at $T^{10}_{1,4}$.
Here’s $T^{10}$ as outputted by SageMath:
Tumblr media
Our $T_{7,4}$ entry is $\approx$ 0.7133, giving us a nice 71.33% chance of winning the game in at most 10 moves!
We can continue to raise $T$ to higher and higher powers and see if we can find the values that the probabilities approach, but there’s an easier way! We can find the steady state distribution of our transition matrix.
The steady state distribution is the vector that when we multiply $T$ by this vector, we just obtain the same vector. In other words, it’s a vector $v$ of probabilities such that $vT = v$. Also, this vector $v$ is actually the eigenvector associated with the eigenvalue of 1!
For the sake of time, and since I’m assuming you’re comfortable with matrix algebra, I’ll leave the solution to you.
After finding the steady state distribution, we can determine that the overall probability of winning is 8/9 and the overall probability of losing is 1/9. Good odds!
How does this fit into my research? / Preview for the next post!
I’ll talk more in the next post about how I viewed the spread of memes as a Markov chain, but in general, I worked sort of backwards from how I solved this example. In my research, I don’t know my probabilities, and my goal is to try to find them! So I use these ideas to create some ~pretty dope~ equations involving these unknown probabilities and try to match these equations to data sets I obtain from Google Trends. Of course, this will make more sense with my future posts!
Hope you enjoyed! Any questions/comments/concerns, feel free to send me an ask.
Best wishes and stay positive!
(I promise that wasn’t a math pun)
(Okay, maybe it was)

A Comprehensive Guide to Natural Language Generation
Tumblr media
As long as Artificial Intelligence helps us to get more out of the natural language, we see more tasks and fields mushrooming at the intersection of AI and linguistics. In one of our previous articles, we discussed the difference between Natural Language Processing and Natural Language Understanding. Both fields, however, have natural languages as input. At the same time, the urge to establish two-way communication with computers has lead to the emergence of a separate subcategory of tasks dealing with producing (quasi)-natural speech. This subcategory, called Natural Language Generation will be the focus of this blog post.
What is NLG?
Natural Language Generation, as defined by Artificial Intelligence: Natural Language Processing Fundamentals, is the “process of producing meaningful phrases and sentences in the form of natural language.” In its essence, it automatically generates narratives that describe, summarize or explain input structured data in a human-like manner at the speed of thousands of pages per second.
However, while NLG software can write, it can’t read. The part of NLP that reads human language and turns its unstructured data into structured data understandable to computers is called Natural Language Understanding.
In general terms, NLG (Natural Language Generation) and NLU (Natural Language Understanding) are subsections of a more general NLP domain that encompasses all software which interprets or produces human language, in either spoken or written form:
NLU takes up the understanding of the data based on grammar, the context in which it was said and decide on intent and entities.
NLP converts a text into structured data.
NLG generates a text based on structured data.
Tumblr media
Major applications of NLG
NLG makes data universally understandable making the writing of data-driven financial reports, product descriptions, meeting memos, and more much easier and faster. Ideally, it can take the burden of summarizing the data from analysts to automatically write reports that would be tailored to the audience. The main practical present-day applications of NLG are, therefore, connected with writing analysis or communicating necessary information to customers:
Tumblr media
Practical Applications of NLG
At the same time, NLG has more theoretical applications that make it a valuable tool not only in Computer Science and Engineering, but also in Cognitive Science and Psycholinguistics. These include:

NLG Applications in Theoretical Research
Evolution of NLG Design and Architecture
In the attempts to mimic human speech, NLG systems used different methods and tricks to adapt their writing style, tone and structure according to the audience, the context and purpose of the narrative. In 2000 Reiter and Dale pipelined NLG architecture distinguishing three stages in the NLG process:
1. Document planning: deciding what is to be said and creating an abstract document that outlines the structure of the information to be presented.
2. Microplanning: generation of referring expressions, word choice, and aggregation to flesh out the document specifications.
3.Realisation: converting the abstract document specifications to a real text, using domain knowledge about syntax, morphology, etc.
Tumblr media
Three Stages of the NLG Process
This pipeline shows the milestones of natural language generation, however, specific steps and approaches, as well as the models used, can vary significantly with the technology development.
There are two major approaches to language generation: using templates and dynamic creation of documents. While only the latter is considered to be “real” NLG, there was a long and multistage way from basic straightforward templates to the state-of-the-art and each new approach expanded functionality and added linguistic capacities:
Simple Gap-Filling Approach
One of the oldest approaches is a simple fill-in-the-gap template system. In texts that have a predefined structure and need just a small amount of data to be filled in, this approach can automatically fill in such gaps with data retrieved from a spreadsheet row, database table entry, etc. In principle, you can vary certain aspects of the text: for example, you can decide whether to spell numbers or leave them as is, this approach is quite limited in its use and is not considered to be “real” NLG.
Scripts or Rules-Producing Text
Basic gap-filling systems were expanded with general-purpose programming constructs via a scripting language or by using business rules. The scripting approach, such as using web templating languages, embeds a template inside a general-purpose scripting language, so it allows for complex conditionals, loops, access to code libraries, etc. Business rule approaches, which are adopted by most document composition tools, work similarly, but focus on writing business rules rather than scripts. Though more powerful than straightforward gap filling, such systems still lack linguistic capabilities and cannot reliably generate complex high-quality texts.
Word-Level Grammatical Functions
A logical development of template-based systems was adding word-level grammatical functions to deal with morphology, morphophonology, and orthography as well as to handle possible exceptions. These functions made it easier to generate grammatically correct texts and to write complex template systems.
Dynamic Sentence Generation
Finally taking a step from template-based approaches to dynamic NLG, this approach dynamically creates sentences from representations of the meaning to be conveyed by the sentence and/or its desired linguistic structure. Dynamic creation means that the system can do sensible things in unusual cases, without needing the developer to explicitly write code for every boundary case. It also allows the system to linguistically “optimise” sentences in a number of ways, including reference, aggregation, ordering, and connectives.
Dynamic Document Creation
While dynamic sentence generation works at a certain “micro-level”, the “macro-writing” task produces a document which is relevant and useful to its readers, and also well-structured as a narrative. How it is done depends on the goal of the text. For example, a piece of persuasive writing may be based on models of argumentation and behavior change to mimic human rhetoric; and a text that summarizes data for business intelligence may be based on an analysis of key factors that influence the decision.
NLG Models
Even after NLG shifted from templates to dynamic generation of sentences, it took the technology years of experimenting to achieve satisfactory results. As a part of NLP and, more generally, AI, natural language generation relies on a number of algorithms that address certain problems of creating human-like texts:
Markov chain
The Markov chain was one of the first algorithms used for language generation. This model predicts the next word in the sentence by using the current word and considering the relationship between each unique word to calculate the probability of the next word. In fact, you have seen them a lot in earlier versions of the smartphone keyboard where they were used to generate suggestions for the next word in the sentence.
Recurrent neural network (RNN)
Neural networks are models that try to mimic the operation of the human brain. RNNs pass each item of the sequence through a feedforward network and use the output of the model as input to the next item in the sequence, allowing the information in the previous step to be stored. In each iteration, the model stores the previous words encountered in its memory and calculates the probability of the next word. For each word in the dictionary, the model assigns a probability based on the previous word, selects the word with the highest probability and stores it in memory. RNN’s “memory” makes this model ideal for language generation because it can remember the background of the conversation at any time. However, as the length of the sequence increases, RNNs cannot store words that were encountered remotely in the sentence and makes predictions based on only the most recent word. Due to this limitation, RNNs are unable to produce coherent long sentences.
LSTM
To address the problem of long-range dependencies, a variant of RNN called Long short-term memory (LSTM) was introduced. Though similar to RNN, LSTM models include a four-layer neural network. The LSTM consists of four parts: the unit, the input door, the output door and the forgotten door. These allow the RNN to remember or forget words at any time interval by adjusting the information flow of the unit. When a period is encountered, the Forgotten Gate recognizes that the context of the sentence may change and can ignore the current unit state information. This allows the network to selectively track only relevant information while also minimizing the disappearing gradient problem, which allows the model to remember information over a longer period of time.
Still, the capacity of the LSTM memory is limited to a few hundred words due to their inherently complex sequential paths from the previous unit to the current unit. The same complexity results in high computational requirements that make LSTM difficult to train or parallelize.
Transformer
A relatively new model was first introduced in the 2017 Google paper “Attention is all you need”, which proposes a new method called “self-attention mechanism.” The Transformer consists of a stack of encoders for processing inputs of any length and another set of decoders to output the generated sentences. In contrast to LSTM, the Transformer performs only a small, constant number of steps, while applying a self-attention mechanism that directly simulates the relationship between all words in a sentence. Unlike previous models, the Transformer uses the representation of all words in context without having to compress all the information into a single fixed-length representation that allows the system to handle longer sentences without the skyrocketing of computational requirements.
One of the most famous examples of the Transformer for language generation is OpenAI, their GPT-2 language model. The model learns to predict the next word in a sentence by focusing on words that were previously seen in the model and related to predicting the next word. A more recent upgrade by Google, the Transformers two-way encoder representation (BERT) provides the most advanced results for various NLP tasks.

NLG Tools
You can see that natural language generation is a complicated task that needs to take into account multiple aspects of language, including its structure, grammar, word usage and perception. Luckily, you probably won’t build the whole NLG system from scratch as the market offers multiple ready-to-use tools, both commercial and open-source.
Commercial NLG Tools
Arria NLG PLC is believed to be one of the global leaders in NLG technologies and tools and can boast the most advanced NLG engine and reports generated by NLG narratives. The company has patented NLG technologies available for use via Arria NLG platform.
AX Semantics: offers eCommerce, journalistic and data reporting (e.g. BI or financial reporting) NLG services for over 100 languages. It is a developer-friendly product that uses AI and machine learning to train the platform’s NLP engine.
Yseop is known for its smart customer experience across platforms like mobile, online or face-to-face. From the NLG perspective, it offers Compose that can be consumed on-premises, in the cloud or as a service, and offers Savvy, a plug-in for Excel and other analytics platforms.Quill by Narrative Science is an NLG platform powered by advanced NLG. Quill converts data to human-intelligent narratives by developing a story, analysing it and extracting the required amount of data from it.
Wordsmith by Automated Insights is an NLG engine that works chiefly in the sphere of advanced template-based approaches. It allows users to convert data into text in any format or scale. Wordsmith also provides a plethora of language options for data conversion.
Open-Source NLG Tools
Simplenlg is probably the most widely used open-source realiser, especially by system-builders. It is an open-source Java API for NLG written by the founder of Arria. It has the least functionality but also is the easiest to use and best documented.
NaturalOWL is an open-source toolkit which can be used to generate descriptions of OWL classes and individuals to configure an NLG framework to specific needs, without doing much programming.
Conclusion
NLG capabilities have become the de facto option as analytical platforms try to democratize data analytics and help anyone understand their data. Close to human narratives automatically explain insights that otherwise could be lost in tables, charts, and graphs via natural language and act as a companion throughout the data discovery process. Besides, NLG coupled with NLP are the core of chatbots and other automated chats and assistants that provide us with everyday support.
As NLG continues to evolve, it will become more diversified and will provide effective communication between us and computers in a natural fashion that many SciFi writers dreamed of in their books.
