Star Wars Legends: Poll of the Week — The Many Lives of Mara
Tumblr media
One of the most popular characters to be developed for Star Wars Legends is Mara Jade, who first appeared in Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy. The character went through a number of journeys, both in her relationship with Luke Skywalker and in her own right, and over that time she had a number of professions. Which one of these Mara Jade professions is your favorite?
The Emperor’s Hand, a Dark-Side-wielding spy and assassin for the Empire, trained by Darth Vader and the Emperor
Hyperdrive mechanic, on the run from Isard and others after the fall of the Empire
Smuggler with Talon Karrde’s crew and later leading the Smugglers’ Alliance
Dancer in Jabba’s Palace (undercover as Arica, as part of her mission to kill Luke Skywalker)
Jedi Knight, and later, Jedi Master who took on Jaina Solo and Anakin Solo as her apprentices
Let’s create more Legends moments together! Follow @from-a-legends-pov and come join us for From a Legends Point of View, a fanfiction event where we’ll be building a collection of fics featuring Star Wars Legends characters (including OT characters) during the time of the Original Trilogy. Writer signups are open now through June 2 — use our Signup Form to pitch your story concepts (Signup Guidelines here), check out our Event Overview and FAQ for more information, and encourage your favorite writers to participate! Hope to have you join us.

Can’t remember if I ever shared this drawing I did.
My favorite Star Wars pair. I don’t care if Disney made the books not canon, Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker forever!!!!

Cover art by Tsuyoshi Nagano. “Star Wars: Allegiance” Japanese edition. January, 2007.
Timothy Zahn expanded upon Mara Jade’s time as the Emperor’s Hand in the first of the Hand of Judgement series, in 2007. The Japanese edition of “Star Wars: Allegiance” displayed a beautiful spread of the book’s protagonists, as depicted by artist Tsuyoshi Nagano. In an interview with the Rebel Legion Japan from 2021, Nagano spoke about his adoration of Mara:
“[Mara Jade] is a character that doesn't appear in the movies. She has a stylish image. Originally, she was the one who served as an assassin for Palpatine. She gradually became attracted to Luke and eventually got married and even had a child. I like the fact that she has a tumultuous worldview. I think Mara Jade is the kind of character that could make a movie. She's fun to draw. Usually, I have a set of actors for my characters. But Mara Jade is the only one that doesn't have a specific model for the movie.”

WIP Wednesday: Part 3 Snippet
Tumblr media
So, it's going to be awhile before Part 3 of Mara's memoir is anywhere near complete. She disappears from canon for a lot of the time period in question. She does, however, have a somewhat uneven presence in Children of the Jedi, particularly at the end where she has it confirmed once and for all that she was not the only Emperor's Hand (and she is particularly upset to find out who else held the title), helps rescue Luke from the Eye of Palpatine (and is introduced to Callista), and helps Han and Leia track down the smugglers that Irek Ismaren practiced his drug induced "brain twisting" on.
All in all, it's a lot of hits for Mara to take in a short period and I tend to refer to this section as "Mara Jade and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day" - all credit to Judith Viorst.
Here is an excerpt from that day, right after she finds yet another one of Irek's victims and it becomes a bit much:
“Mara?”
The voice was Leia’s, concerned. I could feel myself blink. It was as though I’d returned from somewhere else. Great, now I was blacking out.
She knelt next to me and laid a tentative hand on my shoulder. I fought the instinctive urge to shrug it off and race for the nearest exit.
“Did you know him?” she asked quietly.
I nodded. It was all I could manage at that moment. I realized I was still kneeling next to the stunned smuggler. His mask of unconsciousness was suddenly overlaid with the grinning middle aged rogue who regaled the cantina with his tall tales of getting foodstuffs past Imperial checkpoints, and then I could see how he’d looked in the moment before I’d shot him: skeletal, leathery skin pulled tight across his skull, rage and gnawing hunger on his face. He’d been a husk, hollowed out by Palpatine’s gleeful mind mangling.
No, not Palpatine. He was dead. It had been Irek Ismaren who had done this.
The images cycled again and I felt my stomach turn. I turned and heaved my last meal onto the ground.
“Let’s get you some water.”
Leia helped me to my feet and led me into a little side room. Suddenly there was a cup of water in front of my face. I reached out but my hands were shaking and my vision was blurring.
The next thing I knew, I was sitting down again and she was telling me to breathe.
This did not bode well for my mental stability.
“It’s okay, Mara. You’re with friends.”
My hands steadied and I took the water.
“Kriff, you sound like your brother sometimes,” I muttered.
She chuckled and sighed with obvious relief.
“I’m not sure why. We didn’t grow up together.”
“Chalk one up for nature over nurture then I guess.” I answered, taking another sip of my water. My stomach seemed to be under control again. Embarrassment and shame were starting up though.
“Finding out we were family was one of very few bright spots in a great deal of darkness.”
I nodded. Skywalker always glowed a bit brighter when his sister was around.
Friends, right.
I clutched the cup in my hands almost tightly enough to leave an indent.
“That could have been me out there.”
Leia nodded.
“The reason it wasn’t… I don’t know...” I trailed off.
We were the same, those husks and I. I’d always thought I was different from the others. I’d thought that if I’d followed his orders closely enough, excelled enough, proven myself, I’d avoid the fate of his victims who were too slow or too evil or too stupid… or in the wrong place at the wrong time.
But we were all the same. We were all his pawns. No one of us better than the other.
“In many ways that was you.” Leia’s voice was quiet.
I felt myself swing around to meet her gaze and I felt her startle a bit at whatever she was seeing in my eyes.
“Sorry, I thought you’d appreciate the blunt honesty. I mean that Palpatine’s last command did make you a little mad for awhile there. We all watched you feel it and fight it. Your ability to not give in was pretty impressive. Maybe there’s something that can be done for these guys too.”
“Maybe,” I nodded quietly. I didn’t feel like getting into the fact that sometimes I figured the only thing that got rid of his voice was taking down a spare Skywalker. If that hadn’t happened, I’d probably still be haunted.
Oh Kriff that, I was still haunted. Everything about the first 20 odd years of my life floated around in my brain, ready to flare to life at any given moment and wreck things for me. Sometimes when the hits kept coming like they seemed to be today, I had trouble imagining they would ever stop.
I nodded and took another sip of my water.
“Rough day.” I said.
Leia burst into laughter. She leaned back against the wall next to me and I realized that despite her regal bearing, she was pretty dishevelled looking. There were dirt stains and singing from poorly aimed blaster bolts on her dress. Hair was escaping her braids at every opportunity.
She had been drugged and chased through hanging gardens, rescued her brother from an exploding dreadnought, and scoured the tunnels that had held her captive for other victims,  and it wasn’t even dinner time.
I wasn’t the only one who was probably seeing awful things when I closed my eyes.
And the laughter was infectious. Slowly I began to crack up as well.
It felt good to laugh. It felt strange to sit there and laugh with someone else who hurt too.

So I had a freak of a dream last night.
I guess I've been watching too much Star Wars recently, because last night I dreamed that I'd been ported into the Prequels. Like, somewhere a year or so before Attack of the Clones. Because I was from another universe, I was completely invisible to the Force, which Palpatine decided made me something to be watched closely.
Rather than do the in-character thing and just have me killed, in this dream that little weirdo decided to romance me. Why? I dunno. Sleep medications are weird. And here's me trying to react like I DON'T know he's the villain, so I'm having to go along with it to avoid problems and try to avoid changing the timeline of the story too much. So the dream wound up with a couple of years of memory of having a very, very public life as the Chancellor's romantic partner.
A frequent private "date" was sparring with his secret collection of "totally legitimately acquired" lightsabers. Just his little chapter of nerdiness, he loves the things you know... little jokes at the Jedi's expense to test the waters... a casual intimate revelation that he's Sensitive and has practiced without the Jedi's knowledge...
Marriage was discussed at one point, with me trying to avoid that like the fucking PLAGUE while not tipping him off that I know.
Years. Of. Dream.
The big plot happened at the end, when he realized that I was popular enough in public opinion to make my assassination a lever he could pull to gain power in the senate. So I get kidnapped by mercenaries and it becomes clear that he's planning for my public, daring rescue to go horribly wrong and end in the whole ship's demise. So I rescue my own damned self, kill a bunch of mercs, blow up their ship to fake my own death, and go in search of a way to talk to the Jedi Council without being discovered. Because you know what, FUCK this timeline. I've had bloody well enough. So I'm off to warn the Jedi Order that they've been played, and that NO, YOU CAN'T JUST GO MARCHING INTO THE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE TO ARREST HIM FOR FUCK'S SAKE HE'S PLANNED FOR THAT SHIT and NO DO NOT BRING SKYWALKER ALONG WITH YOU THAT KID'S EVEN MORE SCREWED UP THAN I AM RIGHT NOW. I was set to just freaking rewrite Revenge of the Sith into Revenge of the Angie.
Then my alarms went off.
Dammit, this was just getting good.

Illustration by John VanFleet. “Star Wars: Allegiance.” January, 2007.
Timothy Zahn expanded upon Mara Jade’s time as the Emperor’s Hand in the first of the Hand of Judgement series, in 2007. The first edition hardcover of “Star Wars: Allegiance” displayed a spread of the Hand of Judgement stormtrooper squad and Mara Jade, as depicted by artist John VanFleet. In an interview with StarWars.com, Zahn spoke about his inclusion of Mara in the novel:
“This is Mara's earliest story (at least by me) - all the others I've written take place during or after Return of the Jedi. One of the reasons I wanted to write Allegiance was to be able to show her in her role as the Emperor's Hand, and to show how she could serve the Empire without being corrupted by it. Palpatine wants to keep Mara under his control, but as something other than a Sith. I see her as a grand experiment: if he's limited to one Sith apprentice, perhaps he can still extend his power by having a single apprentice plus a group of lower-power non-Sith Force users like Mara.”
