Getting a bit fed up with the take “I don’t ship Jaime with Brienne because she’s too good for him”, sometimes paired with “romance would ruin Brienne’s arc” because. Have you considered that Brienne WANTS those things (Jaime and romance), craves them even

Virtual Light - Wiliam Gibson (Bantam Spectra, 1993)
The millennium has come and gone, leaving in its wake only stunned survivors. In Los Angeles, Berry Rydell is a former armed-response rentacop now working  for a bounty hunter. Chevette Washington is a  bicycle messenger turned pickpocket who impulsively  snatches a pair of innocent-looking sunglasses. But  these are no ordinary shades. What you can see  through these high-tech specs can make you rich—or  get you killed. Now Berry and Chevette are on the  run, zeroing in on the digitalized heart of  DatAmerica, where pure information is the greatest high.  And a mind can be a terrible thing to crash. . . .

Specter of the Past - Timothy Zahn
Star Wars: The Hand of Thrawn Duology Book 1
Read: Sep 2023
When I was in my first era of collecting Star Wars books I picked up the second book of this duology first. There was some context missing but I read it anyways. Now finally I have the first book and I dove in to get the missing context. Although it's really not like I remember anything from the second book anyways haha.
There are a lot of interwoven plots in here. Luke, Han & Leia, Lando, Shada, Disra & Tierce, Wedge, Mara, Pellaeon. Like a lot. They all form the story though. How Zahn had so many moving pieces in order I do not know, but he did. And it was great! I really like how the story was told from all these different POVs. I especially like Force Detective Luke, which becomes more relevant in next book, but I digress. It's hard to look at just this book with out considering its sister. The Hand of Thrawn is a story spanning both books very gracefully. And while I read the second and conclusion first it made more sense I think because it was the end. I wouldn't think the same about this one. All the set-up and no ending. They definitely need to be considered together. Not that I'm trying to say Specter of the Past is bad! It's good, but the story needs both it's halves.

I think we all need to have a moment of thanks for the editors at HarperCollins Voyager and Bantam Spectra who read the entirety of the Fitz and Beloved's developing relationship and then looked Robin Hobb in the eyes and said, yes, this is platonic, I agree. Unsung heroes.

Tales From the Mos Eisley Cantina - Ed. Kevin J. Anderson
Read: Mar - Apr 2023
Normally my strategy with collections is to rapid fire go through all the stories and give them a quick yay or nay. But this collection was unique in my experience. Each story is about a background character seen in the cantina scene in A New Hope. And all the stories interconnect. Not only do they all converge on the cantina for the scene with Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, and Chewbacca, they often intersect with other stories in other ways. The first couple stories I was like is this worth it? But as I went on and caught onto what they were doing it became way more fun to read.
