26 October 2023 || Malunggay
a comment from Mrs. Wendell Daquila:
Love this! So many things are happening in this video. They are growing and learning in:
- the development of their fine motor skills
- their relationship as siblings, or what we call "sibling love"
- the essence of working together in the house chores "as a team"
- the lessons of helpfulness, obedience and patience
- the importance of nutrition that their body can have if those malunggay leaves will get into their bodies
- and most especially, the precious bonding moment with mommy that will be stored in their memory bank. Someday Aianna and Kiaree will tell, "It was my mommy who taught me how important malunggay is to our body and I had a great time with mommy while preparing malunggay for our lunch."
And many more! So precious! 🥹🥲🥰❤️🙏

Unlike other varieties of moringa, this tree will remain short and is very well suited to container growing, which makes growing it in the U.S. much easier. Moringa is native to the tropics and the subtropics; container growing will allow you to bring your tree inside for the winter. This plant is prized for its very high-protein leaves, its rich concentration of minerals and vitamins, and its heavy load of anti-oxidants! Leaves, blooms, seeds, and immature seed pods, called “drumsticks”, are edible; seeds are a source of high-quality oil. The Drumstick Tree tolerates poor soil. It is fast-growing. It is considered one of the world's most useful trees because almost every part of the tree can be used. The Phantom Miracle Tree (Moringa oleifera) gets its name from the fact that when older it forms an enlarged base and can withstand periods of drought by dropping its leaves. When this happens it looks like a "Phantom". Others call it a Miracle Tree because all parts of the plant can be eaten! Easy to grow as an annual in the North! Moringa seeds offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which may help symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Moringa seeds boost Heart Health and may improve heart health by reducing triglycerides, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Moringa pods are high in fiber, which can aid digestion in many instances. Moringa seeds have been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells in various lab studies. This tree could easily nourish the world!!! A hardy, easy, and fast-growing tree for zones 9 and 10. A tree whose leaves and seed pods are eaten as a vegetable throughout India and much of Asia. Medicinal use in some cultures. This is a plant with enormous potential, both social and economic... Moringa is an important food source in some parts of the world. Because it can be grown cheaply and easily, and the leaves retain lots of vitamins and minerals when dried, moringa is used in India and Africa in feeding programs to fight malnutrition. The immature green pods (drumsticks) are prepared similarly to green beans, while the seeds are removed from more mature pods and cooked like peas or roasted like nuts. The leaves are cooked and used like spinach, and they are also dried and powdered for use as a condiment. Moringa is a good source of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals necessary for proper growth and development. The plant is easy to grow and resistant to drought, making it an important food source for malnourished communities. In fact, it’s so nutritious that the moringa tree is cultivated in developing countries as it helps combat malnutrition and can even purify water. It’s literally a lifesaver. The volume of the soil should keep a distance of 1-2cm from the rim of the pot No need to water too often, keep the soil moderately moist The color and brightness may differ a little for the difference in shooting facilities, computer display screens, or other factors. Your understanding is so appreciated. HOW TO GERMINATE Moringa germination is challenging. it requires 80F and up the temp to start germination. and they are easily getting rotten if watered too much during the germination. Moringa seeds can be directly sowed into the garden but it's best to start them indoors to protect the seedling from harsh wind, temperatures, or wildlife while it's growing. Soak the seeds overnight in water to speed germination. Fill a container with seed starting soil, and plant the seed one inch deep. or Soak Moringa seeds in water for 24 hours to enhance quick germination. The next day, you can remove the soaked seeds, and put them on a wet paper towel or cotton cloth. Wrap them and place a knot around the neck. Store them in a dark place and put them in a vessel. It will take one week for the seeds to start sprouting. Then they can be planted into a pot. After a month they can be transplanted into soil. Germination takes about 3 to 14 days or more at 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Check them every two days. Once the seeds have broken loose from the winged shell, you will notice two shoots protruding from the seed. Do not let the shoots get too long and thin as they may get fragile and break when handled. One of the shoots will have some ruffled growth at the extremity; this is the shoot that contains the first leaves (cotyledons) and should be the shoot exposed to the sun. HOW TO GROW 1 Sow Moringa seeds 20mm deep into small pots. Keep soil moist and leave in a sunny position. The soil must have good drainage. 2 Lightly water once per day until sprouts. Seeds should germinate after a week.(5-7 days) 3 Transplant to bigger pot or ground when the plant reaches 30cm high. 4 The final resting position should be in full sun. Wet paper towel method (Great for all tropical fruit seeds) Place some tissue or paper towel into a container and add water to dampen the tissue/ paper towel then cover with cling film or something used as a cover to keep water from evaporating and transplant the seeds into sunny position. The seed cake remaining after oil extraction is used as a fertilizer and also to purify well water and remove salt from seawater. 1. Soil for planting seedlings should be clean, sterile, insect eggs-free, so high temperature sterilized soil is recommended. 2. Keep seedlings moist after sprouting. A watering can is recommended for sprinkling water. AVOID watering directly with pots. 3. Apply fertilizer 3-4 weeks after sprouting. Fertilizer is to be buried one inch deep near the seeding and not too close to the roots. 4. Gently crack moringa seeds shells open. Soak the broken spread seeds in 86°F warm water for about 24 hours. 5. Prepare the pot, potting mix, shovel, and watering can. 6. Fill 80% of each cell of seed tray with nutritious topsoil and water thoroughly. 7. Spread the seeds evenly over the soil's surface and cover the seeds with nutritious soil by one inch. 8. Compress the soil gently by the hand and sprinkle the ground with a watering can. DO NOT pour water as seeds will be washed away. 9. Place in a ventilated area with light and avoid direct sunlight. When the soil is dry, sprinkle water again. (When the temperature is below 86°F, cover with a film layer to ensure seed germination temperature and humidity). 10. After the seeds sprout, expose the seedling to about 3 hours of sunshine per day. It is best to maintain a temperature between 64.4°F and 80°F. When the plants have produced 8-9 leaves, the seedling can be transplanted.
