Have you played ROOT : the RPG ?
By Magpie Games
Tumblr media
War has returned to the Woodland! The Marquise de Cat led her armies to victory over many of the clearings, but the Eyrie Dynasties rise again to oppose her. Meanwhile, the mice, rabbits, and foxes of the Woodland do not sit idly by - the Woodland Alliance, a homegrown rebellion, has emerged, promising to free the Woodland from any oppressors. In the midst of this war, you and your friends - vagabonds all - travel between the clearings, taking on jobs no one else can or will do. You choose whom you serve, if anyone… but everyone knows you may tip the balance of the War.

HEY TUMBLR THE BOOK(S) I DID COVERS FOR ARE AVAILABLE THIS MONTH. THIS IS THE SECOND ONE.
Do you like queer teen heroes that focuses on the hot mess express lead? Flashback to the 90s? Nine Inch Nails references? Supporting small publishers? Check out Girl Vengeance: The Downward Spiral (book two of two)! ... And after finishing this if you want to know what becomes of Vivienne, good news! Most of her story is when she's in her 40s, this is the flashback books explaining how she became the person she is today.
Digital copies available SOON, but dead tree versions also coming eventually!
(adventures were inspired by a Masks ttrpg game we played so I'm tagging with that :D)

I find it very amusing and special. I love this game, and this contrast sure gives it personality.

44 - Making the Master of the Water Shuriken in Avatar Legends
Tumblr media
In this episode, we take a look at the RPG/Lore Bible based on the beloved Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Legend of Korra. You will be happy to hear that our cat is completely lore-compliant, considering a Literal Cat did exist in the show at one point. I mean, if you ignore the fact that it can water-bend. Otherwise, perfectly lore-compliant!

So, the new Baymax! shorts gave me some inspiration for how to play Baymax in Masks: A New Generation. Figuring out how to flavor a character who is entirely pacifistic and support-oriented for a game that sort of expects you to punch things was an interesting challenge, but I hope it can encourage you to think about how to really play with the rules.

Hello! Welcome to From the Grey Tavern.
I’m going to be using this blog to create campaign diaries for the games I run, as I have time to do so (woo dissertation writing!). This will include narrative summaries of each session with the addition of commentary about the process and planning of each game.
Also as a note, this is a bilingual blog! Both English and Spanish will be used, but you’ll mostly see Spanish when I’m running games that lend themselves to it like Cartel by Magpie Games or Nahual by Smoking Mirror Productions.
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy these humble tales From the Grey Tavern!

The Smith
You’re good with your hands, you’re good at the drawing board and you’ve got what it takes to be the next big name in whatever you put your mind to. There’s no better testing than trial and error, but can you and your creations make it to the end?
Another Icon finished for one of the Worst Generation Playbooks! Art is still in progress, but the book with full written content is available for purchase (or download if you backed) on the Five Points itch store!

The World of TTRPGs
Tabletop RPGs, also known as TTRPGs, are a great way to make friends, or reconnect with them. With so many TTRPG systems out there, there's always going to be one for everybody. If you like fantasy, there's Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder and other indie fantasy systems. If fantasy is not your thing? There are other TTRPGs focusing on other genres too. For example, a couple classic horror TTRPGs are Call of Cthulhu and Vampire: The Masquerade. For a sci-fi setting, look no further than Cyberpunk! There's even a My Little Pony TTRPG and one for the Avatar animated series!
There's something for everyone, and the recent popularity of TTRPGs have since inspired several creators to make their own TTRPGs. For example: Candela Obscura - the upcoming horror TTRPG by Critical Role themselves! For indie TTRPGs, a simple search in the #ttrpg tag should bring to light several ongoing TTRPG projects that are in development, or already published.
While Dungeons and Dragons have been the symbol of TTRPGs for a while now, it's not the only system in existence. By expanding your sights beyond the standard d20 system, you'll broaden your horizons to so many possibilities in the TTRPG world.
Take Call of Cthulhu's d100/percentile rolling system, for example. The use of the percentile dice is a huge contrast to D&D's use of the d20. I have to admit, as someone who is new to Call of Cthulhu, the percentile dice system is still unfamiliar to me. What I do like, is the possibility to 'push' a roll to hopefully succeed in a skill check.
Recent TTRPGs that have been published recently (e.g. Critical Role's Candela Obscura, Magpie Games's Avatar RPG) discard the use of the d20 or other types of dice, and instead focus on using a pool of 6-sided dice (d6). This means there is less need to scramble for full 7-piece dice set and also squint at the dice sides to make sure you've picked up the right one.
The world of TTRPGs is vast, and with so many different systems for different types of genres, you're spoiled for choice. Of course, there's always the pain of finding a group of people to play said TTRPG with, but that will be for another post entirely. Spend some time looking through sites like dicebreaker.com or rpggamer.org if you want to stray away from the standard D&D system. Maybe you'll find something that intrigues you!
