Mack the Knife (Mackie Messer) lyrics in German
The Beggar's Opera
Best unexpected nugget so far: "In 1976, a brand-new interpretation of 'Mack the Knife' by Ralph Manheim and John Willett was used in the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of The Threepenny Opera, starring Raul Julia as Macheath." ...HOLY COW FIRE UP THE TIME MACHINE AND DROP ME OFF AT THE tkts BOOTH, I WANT TIX.
“Ella Fitzgerald made history as the first jazz artist and the first Black-American woman to perform at the halftime show. The performance, billed as a "Salute to Louis Armstrong," featured Fitzgerald and trumpeter Al Hirt delivering a rendition of Satchmo's classic "Mack the Knife."
My mam just showed me this, I'd never seen it before (or anything from either of these two ladies), and I love this. Both their voices, but also this idea/format for a duet, one person singing the song and the other adding commentary on top of it, like they're gossiping on a street corner. It's fantastic. Also the raw life and energy and laughter in this performance.
Yeah, that just brightened up my morning, hundred per cent!
"So...the song then, is about a man who has a wife... for whom he buys.. pillows?"
"Exactly!"

so earlier this year, my pal @starmansart requested I draw a poster based on the really fun Mack the Knife skin from the og Muppet Show -- this was the result!

Three Penny Opera and Mack the Knife by Kurt Weill.
“Well, it was really imaginative, really clever. But was it too clever by half? Was it too much of a gamble, to change their style that has been so successful?”

"Sukie Tawdry" is the best erotica-author pseudonym ever. :)
(meanwhile, here's the man himself singing it live somewhere in 1970...) (and a caveat: this video ends just shy of the classic "Look out ol' Mackie is back!" finish. Annoying, but what can you do...)
Ella Fitzgerald “Mack The Knife-Ella In Berlin” 1960
I admittedly don’t have enough Ella in my record collection but I do own two copies of this classic. Lots of great stuff here. Lots of standards that most of us have heard thousands of times yet she can make them sound fresh… “The Lady Is A Tramp”, “Summertime”, and “How High The Moon”. But the best is the title track, “Mack The Knife”, where she forgets the words and just rolls with it without missing a beat. An astonishing performance. She very well could be the best vocalist ever.
