I think people don't talk enough about the Spiral Nemesis and how it's not entropy because of overpopulation, but how the Spiral Nemesis is actually a full on war between spiral life forms that ends up destroying the universe, how Lordgenome himself would've been prone to this and the own strenght of the Anti-Spiral was the one who ended up probably saving the universe, and how the fears of the Anti-Spiral got confirmed when he used his power to give himself and just himself a good life on an earth that was barren whilst oppresing and resenting his own kind, like i understand he got convinced that the Anti-Spirals were invincible and a good future was impossible even with his own power, so he chose to break the rule of spiral power by creating creatures that would enforce a will that comes from despair, fear and defeat, the Anti-Spirals touched his soul and it got to him in the end.
Returning to the Spiral Nemesis i think that the Anti-Spirals were this enforced idea of entropy and giving up against the weight of mortality and the usage of will as a sustainable motivator, it's a fearful oppresor mentality that goes all the way from what they saw as "Destiny" but was nothing but a dark path that every being was at the risk of falling in. It's such a good perspective on the argument that human nature is one of violence and selfishness, weighting it with fate on itself.
Finally i love how death is out of the whole Evolution vs Stillness, the series understands that inmortality is something that humans aren't meant to feel, we saw how fucked up Lordgenome and the Anti-Spirals got on it, it expresses the end of life as this natural process that even in the wake of death, serves a purpose at great scale so the universe on itself can exist peacefully.
I should finish my homework

Black Authority Figure Trope?
Anonymous asked:
Hello! I was working on a fantasy novel, and I was planning on making the king of the “holy kingdom of light” (name tentative) black, as a way to defy the racist undertones y'all helpfully pointed out in your black and white symbolism post. However, while thinking about it, I noticed a trend in the media I consume where black men would be shown as figures of stern authority — Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99, The Commander (and later The General) from Monster Hunter World, and Lordgenome from TTGL, to list some examples. Is there an underlying racist trope at play here? My best guess is the “black people = strong” stereotype, something I already have plans to avoid, but I’d rather err on the side of caution and ask as I couldn’t find anything relevant in your archives.
What gets me about these characters is that they’re placed in positions of authority but these characters rarely have little to do narratively. So it’s a token Black character in a position of strength/authority with little agency/means to exercise said authority. In their world, they are strong. But within the narrative, they are weak.
-Norma
There’s definitely a pattern of strong, serious commander types in stories. I think of the Scary Black Man and Strong Black Person (Often women) tropes when I see these play out. It helps to balance out their personalities with traits beyond what’s assumed about them and / or have characters without these traits altogether. Black characters should be allowed softness, vulnerability, love and support too -- even when they’re “tough.”

Random but I always get super annoyed when people describe Gurren Lagann as “human spirit versus indifferent cruel universe” story like NO did you not fucking watch the show? Spiral power and people using it to become progressively more awesome is literally part of the laws of physics of that universe, that is the natural progression! The universe in Gurren Lagann is fucking awesome and loving and spiral power is holy spiritual strength beyond anything one can imagine, something you use to learn and grow and persevere despite whatever squall you face, and the challenges of life are necessary because a life without challenge is meaningless.
The Anti-Spiral and Lordgenome are the bad guys because they see the challenges inherent in life — represented with the Spiral Nemesis — and become materialistic nihilistic pricks out of cowardice and greed, choosing to not progress any further but instead to live in ignorance and decadence, lording their prebuilt strength over younger people and denying them the spiritual growth that people need for life to have meaning, perverting the natural life cycle of the universe for their own selfish reasons under the guise of “protecting them from harm”.
Team Dai Gurren win because they see beyond the Anti-Spiral’s shallow idea of life and fight despite whatever their enemies throw at them, even continuing to fight from the next life, because they see the true nature of the universe — a place that becomes better with each turn of the drill — and find true immortality in living their lives to fullest.

Obscure Animation Subject #54: Gurren Lagann
Originally posted on Twitter on April 14, 2023.
Produced by Gainax, written by Kazuki Nakashima and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, it takes place in a fictional future where Earth is ruled by the Spiral King, Lordgenome, who forces mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages.
It focuses on two teenagers, Simon and Kamina, who live in a subterranean village and wish to go to the surface. Using a mecha Lagann, Simon and Kamina reach the surface and start fighting alongside other humans against Lordgenome's forces, before fighting their true enemy.
It ran for 27 episodes on TV Tokyo between April and September 2007, with films released in 2008 and 2009. It received acclaim from critics, sitting at at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 17 reviews. The critic consensus calls it, "a humorous spectacle appreciate by anime fans."
It’s not as well-known now as it was then, but it was a pop culture staple. It led to the foundation of Studio Trigger, with Gurren Lagann's visual humor and style inserted into their work. Shigeto Koyama, who designed worked this show, designed worked on Big Hero 6.
It definitely defined anime in the late 2000s, and while it only last one season, its legacy still made a lot of importance. Definitely an important piece of mecha anime and Gainax history. It is one of several science fiction anime to receive a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
