Bruce’s #1 Fan
By Stan Goldstein
Seven years ago today, May 1, 2017, Bruce Springsteen's "Fan No. 1" Obie passed away. If you don't know who Obie was, she was Bruce's most loyal, dedicated fan. She had the same seat/spot for every show she attended: front-row center (per Bruce's wishes). She closely followed his various bands starting with Child in the late 1960s, eventually becoming his cook and personal assistant (Steve Van Zandt's too) and, most famously, a lifetime front-row-center invitee. In a world in which "superfans" are often infamous, Obie was merely legendary.
There was a memorial service for Obie a few days after she passed at a funeral home in Asbury Park and Bruce gave one of the eulogies. Here's what he said:
Well I'm the guy that Obie spent a big part chunk of her life dedicated to. Being the focus of that attention was pretty challenging very often. Obie was quietly demanding. I didn't know I was going to speak today so I'll just give you some memories I have of O.
First time was at West End Park. We were playing next to Howard's movie theater, and one beautiful summer afternoon, I remember this girl sitting there with the flag around here. So right from the beginning she just looked different from everybody else. Obie was a misfit, outsider, a rebel and didn't look like nobody else, didn't talk like anybody else, didn't think like anybody else. She was just a unique character. And everything that the word fan connotes in all of its myriad, strange, bizarre and wonderful ways. She was a Fan-atic, she was Fan-tastic. She was deeply, deeply dedicated.
Obie's taking more than a few of my secrets with her right now. We lived very, very close to one another for a long time. And I had chicken and grapes! And I had chicken and bananas, chicken and peaches. She covered the fruits and the chicken completely.
What can I say, she was always a heartful soul. She was dedicated to me that if a bullet came my way she would be there to catch it. There was a deep, deep and very personal connection and love. I feel honored to have the seed. And what can I say, I loved Obie a lot. I'm going to miss her very badly when I get out there on the stage, that front and center spot will be empty. We love you O.
To read more about Obie, here's something I wrote that was posted on the Backstreets news page shortly after her death: (Sorry, this is another long post)
REMEMBERING OBIE DZIEDZIC, "FAN NUMBER ONE"
It was about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Saturday show had crept into Sunday morning due to delays from thunderstorms, giving the 55,000 fans a chance to celebrate Bruce's actual 63rd birthday with him. A giant birthday cake was brought out, everyone sang "Happy Birthday," and Bruce then cut the cake. He brought the first piece to Obie Dziedzic, who was in her normal spot, front and center.
"The first piece goes to Obie, our first fan, right there, " said Steven Van Zandt.
Bruce followed with, "Obie, we love you. Obie was following us when we were 16. We love you, O!"
It was a special moment, one of hundreds Obie shared with Bruce Springsteen for more than 45 years — actually starting when Bruce was 18, not 16, but it sure seemed that way. Bruce called her his "first fan" and "Fan No. 1."
Obie Dziedzic — pronounced "Je-zitz," to answer a question she was often asked — passed away early Monday morning after being ill for the past couple of months. She was a friend to not only Bruce and the E Street Band, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, but to musicians and music fans around the world.
Obie, known as "O" to her close friends, grew up in Long Branch, NJ and loved music. She attended tons of shows at Asbury Park's Convention Hall, seeing The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Who, and so many more in the 1960s. But it was one afternoon in 1969 at Long Branch's West End Park, which is still there today at the corner of Brighton and Ocean avenues, that she first saw the young musician who would change her life forever.
"There he was, this Adonis," Obie once told me. It was a then-18-year-old Bruce Springsteen leading the band Child.
Obie saw rock and roll future even before Jon Landau. Right away, she was drawn to this talented, handsome musician and made sure to see him perform anywhere and everywhere. Later when Bruce was in Steel Mill, Obie would bring pizzas to the surfboard factory in Ocean Township, NJ, where they were living. Yet she was too shy to stick around until she got to know Carl "Tinker" West, Steel Mill's manager, who befriended her. Soon she was friends with Springsteen, Van Zandt, Vini Lopez, Danny Federici, and many other musicians. She attended every Steel Mill show she could, standing in line for hours to make sure she was at the front of the stage.
Obie was a fixture at the Upstage in Asbury Park. She later saw Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, and she was there the night Clarence Clemons walked into the Student Prince in Asbury Park to play with Bruce for the first time in 1971. She would drive Bruce to those Student Prince gigs too, although she said on Saturday nights she did have to watch The Mary Tyler Moore Show first.
Driving around the Jersey Shore with Obie was always a treat, as she had so many stories to share. "See that there? It used to be a Carvel," she said, pointing to a building on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch. "That's the place where Bruce told me he had his first album coming out. Garry Tallent used to live in those apartments right across the street." When Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. was released in January of 1973, Obie found an autographed copy left for her on her doorstep.
When Bruce started to tour with the E Street Band in the early 1970s, playing some theaters, Bruce made sure she was still always up front, promising her, "Obie, whenever and wherever I play, you will always have the two front-row center seats." It was a promise Bruce always honored, for more than 40 years. When Bruce and the E Street Band used a general admission setup on the floor, his security director made sure Obie was in her normal front-row spot. She always wanted to be on the same side as Bruce and Steve.
She had one firm rule. She did not want Bruce to know she was at a show. She wanted to surprise him when he took the stage. At the April 20, 2016 show in Baltimore that I was fortunate to attend with her, we made a little bet on how long it would take Bruce to see her. It was one of Obie's first show since that 2012 birthday show. I said second song; she said not until a few songs in. We were both wrong. When Bruce took the stage, he made eye contact with her immediately. A huge smile lit up his face. It was a thrill to watch this bond between the two of them. You can hear Bruce give many shout-outs to Obie on the live recordings from over the years.
Bruce's former tour manager Bob Chirmside shared this post on Facebook:
For the five years I worked on the road with Bruce Springsteen as his road manager we held two front row tickets for Obie at every show. And I mean every show! Promoters knew better than to screw this up. Everywhere from Philly to San Diego those two seats were held by Bruce according to his wishes and the band's rider. It was always good to see Obie in those seats, and it put a smile on Bruce's face having a special someone to play to. Bruce couldn't have asked for a more loving fan. But Obie was much, much more than a fan. During the time I lived with Bruce, Obie altered and sewed his clothes, did errands, and made Bruce his meals. Obie took incredible care of him. Obie loved Bruce and got to see a side of him that few of us rarely do. On a side note. If you're wondering what happened to the front row tickets if Obie didn't attend. Well, 15 minutes before the show began, I quickly exited the venue and gave the tickets to someone that wasn't able to buy tickets. Most people couldn't believe it was for real. It felt good to put smiles on faces. Thank you Obie for the good memories!
"She was hired by Steven first. He needed an assistant at Miami Productions, and he hired her in 1975 when the Jukes got signed and recorded their first LP," said Billy Smith, a historian and Obie's longtime friend. "Steve needed someone at home in Asbury Park to run things while he was touring with Bruce. While she followed Bruce's tours as a friend/fan from the beginning, she didn't work for Bruce until the Darkness tour in 1978. On the road she did everything: coordinated guest tickets, sewed their clothes, cooked, etc. Anything that needed doing, she did it. A personal assistant to everyone."
If you listen to Southside Johnny's live version of "Having a Party," you'll hear the line, "Obie's doing the twist."
Not only did Obie help out Bruce, Steven, and Southside, she was there for John Eddie, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band and others when they were first starting out. She was a fixture on the Jersey Shore bar scene in the 1970s and '80s and always, always friendly to fans. You could go right up to Obie and talk about music, Bruce, Southside. She was also close friends with Peter Wolf.
When the discussion comes up as to who has seen the most Bruce shows outside of Bruce himself, the answer is pretty easy: Obie. She was there for all 10 nights of the legendary Bottom Line shows in August of 1975. She even drove Bruce to some of those shows. "We hit traffic on Route 36 in Eatontown headed out toward the Parkway and I was a mess," Obie told me. "But Bruce was as calm as could be."
Obie, who lived for the past 16 years in Neptune, New Jersey, never gave an interview; her loyalty was 100 percent to Bruce. She was never, ever going to say anything which might upset him. She had, however, been working on a book, which sadly will never be written now. I was fortunate to have her read to me some of the stories that she was going to include. They were a delight to hear: How she and Bruce would go to the drive-in movie theater In Eatontown, New Jersey, and put a sofa in the back of his white pickup truck and sit back and enjoy the night. Another was when she was helping Bruce move into a house on Navesink River Road in Middletown in the early 1980s — she swears she saw and talked to a ghost!
Bruce mentioned Obie in his recent autobiography, Born to Run. He told the story how she was with him and Steve and Maureen Van Zandt when they weren't allowed in Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm in the early 1980s because Bruce and Steve were wearing bandanas.
He also gave Obie credit for helping him select one of two versions he had of "Racing in the Street." Bruce told this story before playing it at the April 22, 2005 Devils & Dust show at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park:
I had two different endings. I'm going to dedicate this to you tonight, Obie. My oldest fan is here tonight and I love her very much. This is Obie Dziedzic — a round of applause, the woman's been around since forever. There were two people that actually helped me with writing the end of this song, and Obie was one of them. I had an ending where there's the two guys, but I had another ending where a woman enters the picture, and I played 'em both for Obie.Obie said, "I like the one with the girl." I said, "Okay, that's that." Then I played one for Steve, and Steve says, "Well, the one with the girl is what really happens. You got your pals and got the boys' club, and it lasts for a while, and you try to play down all the homoerotic stuff."I'm gonna do this tonight for Obie. I love you, and thanks for the help.
Bruce told a similar story in the 2010 documentary The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, in which you can also spot Obie at the 58:49 mark.
There are so many good things to say and write about Obie — the tributes have been pouring in on social media — one of the best is from photographer Lynn Goldsmith. Obie told me this was the best description about her devotion to Bruce that she ever read about herself. To those who had the privilege to know her, it describes her perfectly:
"The girl with her head down is Obie," Goldsmith wrote, describing her 1978 photograph of Springsteen collapsing into an overjoyed crowd. "She was Bruce's biggest fan. She was there when they couldn't sell out a small club. She devoted herself free of charge to washing their clothes and doing whatever needed to be done. She did not get paid except with front row seats and the joy of knowing that she was making it easier for Bruce to be Bruce with her unconditional love. I wished I could have been like her. She inspired me because she was able to give with no strings attached. She gave freely because she believed in the power of love."
Obie was able to see several shows in the spring and summer of 2016. She was at both Brooklyn shows in April and attended all three MetLife Stadium shows in August. Her final show was on September 14, 2016 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Looking back, it may be fitting this was her last concert, as she told me, "That was the best Bruce Springsteen show I have ever seen."
The final time Obie got to see Bruce on stage was at his conversation with Bob Santelli at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, on Jan. 10, 2017. After the talk, Obie saw that Bruce's coffee cup was still on the little table on the stage. She said to me, "Get that for me!" and I was able to have someone hand it to me. I gave it to Obie. She had one more souvenir. One of the organizers of the event later said to me, "We noticed one of the cups was missing!"
Soon after that, Obie started to not feel well, and she was in and out of the hospital for a couple of months. Bruce, Steve and Maureen, John Eddie and many others made sure to visit her. Once when I checked in at the desk to get a pass to see her at Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune, the guard asked me, "Are you famous? It seems everyone who has been going up to see this patient is famous."
He was wrong. It was Obie who was famous.
Right now she's sitting in the front row in heaven, watching Danny and Clarence play away.

Happy 63rd Birthday to arguably one of Scotland’s favourite lady’s Lorraine Kelly.
Lorraine was born in Glasgow in November 1959.  She lived in the Gorbals as bairn until she moved to Bridgeton before her parents moved the family to East Kilbride when she was 13. Lorraine went to Strathclyde Primary School, which she recalls as being, right by the banks of the river Clyde.  She has always been a voracious reader and we were encouraged to read books that were ahead of our age and admits to being
“very studious and hardworking, but I was given the strap across my hand a few times for talking – so I suppose I was a sort of closet chatterbox.”
I think us Scots of a certain age were no strangers to having the tawse used to keep us in line!
Lorraine then attended went to John Street Secondary School in Glasgow for a year, but they moved to East Kilbride, and transferred to Claremont High School At Clairmont she chose to learn Russian, as one of only three at the school she said they were spoiled  for attention. She recalls going on a school trip to St Petersburg and giving a little speech in Russian. “It was all very exciting.”
Lorraine's early ambition as a teenager was to be a fighter pilot in the RAF, but in 1972 girls weren’t allowed to do that. She had always been interested in journalism, too, and was going to university to read English and Russian. In the end Lorraine got a job on the East Kilbride News and never looked back.
Lorraine Kelly was TV-am’s Glasgow based reporter covering stories all over Scotland, most notably the Lockerbie disaster. She joined in 1985, and by 1989 was a regular presenter of The Morning Programme, TV-am Reports and Good Morning Britain. In 1990 she became permanent co host of TV-am’s main show alongside Mike Morris.
Lorraine continues to present her own breakfast TV show on ITV, making her the longest serving continuous breakfast presenter in Britain. Congratulations Lorraine!
I love that Lorraine hasn’t forgotten her roots and returns each year to take part in the STV Children's  Appeal, she is also  a patron of Worldwide Cancer Research,  and of the Human Rights advocacy, information and advice charity POhWER and became an ambassador for the charity Sightsavers in 2011.
In November 2014, Kelly received a special Scottish BAFTA award honouring her 30-year television career.
Kelly previously lived in Broughty Ferry, Dundee until December 2017 as she found commuting back and forth was not working. Kelly and her husband then decided to sell their Broughty Ferry home to be closer to Lorraine's work, and so they could spend more time together. Kelly has described herself as an 'adopted Dundonian' and despite moving away, she considers Dundee to be a place that she will always call home. The couple, who have been married for 30 years and have one daughter, Rosie who was born in 1994.

Sunday Bird Droppings: Trey Mancini is a World Series champion
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-news/bird-news/sunday-bird-droppings-trey-mancini-is-a-world-series-champion/
Sunday Bird Droppings: Trey Mancini is a World Series champion
Hello, friends.
Seven months later, that’s a wrap on the 2022 MLB season. The Astros are the champions, having knocked off the Phillies in six games with a win last night. I guess we’ll see if within three years there are revelations about some new kind of cheating scandal like ended up putting a blot on their last title. Until then, a second title in five years for Houston feels like this for me: At least it means the Orioles are following a good plan. And I’m glad that Trey Mancini is officially a champion.
As has been written before, this was a year of fun in Birdland that exceeded anything that any of us – even the most optimistic of us – could have expected for 2022. That’s especially true when you consider the spring training injury to Adley Rutschman, the very early season injury to John Means, and the early June injury to Grayson Rodriguez. Rutschman, at least, became a major contributor. Hopefully we’ll see those other guys make their mark in 2023.
Now, we start the countdown for when things will start to happen. By week’s end, the Orioles will have to decide what to do with their team option for Jordan Lyles. Other teams will also have to make such decisions. Players will be exercising opt-outs, or not, and teams will extend qualifying offers that will be accepted or not, setting the free agent market. Then we’ve got three months where things could happen between now and the start of spring training.
Today, of course, there’s not much to do. As the great Rogers Hornsby once said of what he does in winter, “I stare out the window and wait for spring.” A person in the Baltimore area might have felt a touch of spring this weekend, but with baseball over, it’s a little colder and winter will be upon us soon enough. In four months and 24 days, a new season will dawn, with pitch clocks, no more infield shifts, and more.
Around the blogO’sphere
A look at O’s pitch usage/mix from 2022 (Steve Melewski) The Orioles threw fewer fastballs this year, and the team’s average fastball velocity increased. This is generally a good formula for today’s game – and for the O’s, it was!
Heston Kjerstad finally starts Orioles career after dealing with a heart problem (The Athletic) It’s been nothing short of delightful to see how Kjerstad has performed out in the Arizona Fall League. He even continued that a bit last night, finishing as the runner-up among eight participants in the league’s Home Run Derby, one homer behind the champion. I hope that he can carry that over into the next minor league season.
What to know ahead of the Orioles offseason (Orioles.com) Perhaps your question is on the frequently asked question list.
Birthdays and Orioles anniversaries
Today in 1969, the Orioles had their first Cy Young Award winner in team history as Mike Cuellar was named the co-winner alongside of Detroit’s Denny McLain. Cuellar posted a 2.38 ERA while pitching 290.2 innings. In those days, that counted for a 149 ERA+, which led all AL pitchers who threw at least 200 innings.
In 2011, the Orioles officially hired Dan Duquette to become the new general manager, although that wasn’t his formal title. There were some good times for a while.
There are a pair of former Orioles with birthdays today. They are: 2003 shortstop Deivi Cruz, and 1982-83/85 infielder Leo Hernández. Today is Hernández’s 63rd birthday, so an extra happy birthday to him.
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday to you as well! Your birthday buddies for today include: Ottoman sultan Suleiman “the Magnificent” (1494), saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax (1814), composer John Philip Sousa (1854), basketball inventor James Naismith (1861), baseball Hall of Famer Walter “The Big Train” Johnson (1887), Academy and Primetime Emmy Award- winning actress Sally Field (1946), The Eagles rocker Glenn Frey (1948), and Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone (1988).
On this day in history…
In 1860, President Abraham Lincoln was elected to his first term of office, receiving 180 out of a needed 152 electoral votes in a four-way race. Lincoln won a plurality of the popular vote at 40%, with Stephen Douglas at 30%.
In 1995, Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell announced that he would be moving the team to Baltimore. Neither the franchise name Browns nor its history ever left Cleveland, which had a team returned to it after only a three-season absence.
**
And that’s the way it is in Birdland on November 6. Have a safe Sunday.

May 25, 2022
Happy 63rd birthday, Dad!
Dad and Haley woke up early again, but this time they walked to the hotel lobby and had some coffee and chatted while Mom and I slept a little longer. Around 9, Mom and I woke up and called Dad and Haley back. We all got ready for brunch at a place Haley had heard of, Wilma and Freida’s Cafe. We all gave Dad his birthday presents and he was really happy! Haley gave him a shirt from the farmers market near her apartment and I gave Dad a small replica statue of Edgar Martinez that I got at the Mariner’s game in April. Mom had gotten Dad a Tommy Bahamas outfit! A really nice blue patterned button down shirt, and some blue shorts to go with it. He was so surprised! The whole trip he had been mentioning that this was the year that he was going to buy himself a Tommy Bahamas shirt, little did he know, that Mom had already got him one! He was so surprised and really happy, it really warmed my heart!
After giving our gifts and getting ready for the day, we took an Uber to the shopping area. It was in the same area as the Tommy Bahamas restaurant that we went to the night before. We had about a ten minute wait for a table, but that was fine! Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, had been to this place before! It was pretty cute! We all got our own meals, and then we shared a churro waffle. It was so tasty! Dad even got a free birthday brownie! The server was a nice older man and everyone was just so kind, it was a really nice meal!
After breakfast we checked out the Tommy Bahamas store for a bit. Dad don’t want to get another, since Mom had already taken care of that, but it was still fun to look around. Next on the birthday agenda was pool time! The four of us lathered up on sunscreen and headed down to the pool. It was a beautiful, hot and sunny day! We hung around the pool for a while, and then we heard back from the mechanic that Haley’s car was fixed and ready! Originally, we had wanted to do a scenic tramway ride, just outside of Palm Springs, but when we looked into it, we realized that it was in another mountain pass, and we didn’t want to put Haley’s car through that, just after getting it fixed. So we cancelled those plans and decided to just check out Palm Springs and do dinner there.
So around four, we left the pool and got ready for dinner and exploring Palm Springs! We took one last Uber ride to Haley’s car and got to pick it up. The workers were so nice, I even wrote them a nice Yelp review! It cost over $800 to get her car fixed, damn! Plus the $300 for a tow truck! Yikes! But, we were just all so thankful that her car was in working order, so Haley would be able to get back to LA the next day.
We drove to Palm Springs and walked around the strip for a while. We explored some of the shops and ended up getting some shirts or sweatshirts. I got a shift for Ingvar and some postcards and that was good for me. Palm Spring was actually pretty different than Palm Desert! Palm Springs seemed definitely more run down, while Palm Desert was more upscale and fancier, it felt like.
Haley had made reservations for an Italian place for Dad’s birthday, called Sammy G’s Tuscan Grill. Our reservations were for 7:30, so that’s when we headed in. We all shared a charcuterie board as an appetizer and I had the lasagna. The food was tasty but unfortunately Dad wasn’t feeling to well. We were seated outside and I think Dad was just overheated from the day—it was 100 degrees when we left for dinner! We enjoyed the dinner and service but it was a bummer Dad wasn’t feeling his best. We actually didn’t even get dessert, we just thought it would be best to get Dad to the hotel and feel better. The restaurant did give us some after dinner drinks, which they said weren’t alcoholic but they definitely were, so Haley and I had those.
After dinner, we got back in Haley’s car and headed back to Palm Desert. Dad started feeling better with the air condition in the car on. We ended the night with Dad heading to bed, and Haley, Mom, and I staying up for a bit. I showered and Haley Dutch braided my hair so I would have curly hair for the next day. It was a great day celebrating Dad’s birthday! :]

145 - The Veterans
Fake it till you make it. Mike it till you like it. Book it till you look it. Welcome to Night Vale.
More soldiers of the Blood Space War have returned home to Night Vale. Another craft landed in the corn field of John Peters – you know, the farmer. Beings of astonishing structure emerged alongside four human figures in space suits. The astronauts removed their helmets to reveal they are Night Vale residents James Peters – you know, the brother of Johns Peters – you know, the farmer; twins Drew and Dan Christiansen, and Junior Blay. These veterans of the interstellar conflict were welcomed by the citizens of Night Vale with hugs, a brass band, and delicious unsold baked goods left over from last month’s PTA bake sale to support the Blood Space War.
The returning soldiers thanked the gathering, but warned Night Vale of the Polonian armies of star system Lakaia 9352, who are encroaching at this moment upon our own galaxy. Admiral Junior Blay of the 63rd mountain cavalry said the Polonians are ruthless killers. They are three times the size of humans, with hundreds of sharp teeth up and down their many boneless limbs. They have only one eye, which really messes up their depth perception, (Blay) said, but that eye can also shoot out lasers, so it’s sort of a six of one way, half dozen the other
The crowd did not hear most of what the veterans had to say, as they were mesmerized by the beings of astonishing structure standing atop the landing ramp of their disc-shaped craft. “Oh those?” Sergeant Dan Christiansen said. “They are allies. They’re from the Battlestation Wolfgang. They have no home planet, as it was destroyed millennia ago by the Polonians.” The crowd pointed and shouted “interlopers of astonishing structure” at the beings, but Lieutenant Drew Christiansen said: “Oh, they have no oral or written language. They cannot understand your noises.” Drew then did a kind of b-boy pop and lock dance move and the beings of astonishing structure replied with a balletic prance before entering their ship and departing. They said: “Thanks, but this place is weird.” Drew Christiansen interpreted for the crowd.
Dan and Drew Christiansen were born in Night Vale in 1912. They became tax accountants. They had wives and children. They donated to the old Night Vale Opera House and were avid sports fans. They even started the first ever semi pro sand hockey league. Dan passed away in 1994 of liver cancer, and Drew passed away weeks later of a heart attack. They were survived by their wives, children, and grandchildren. But upon returning to Night Vale this week, these 107-year-old men looked to be in their late 20’s. The Christiansen twins have attempted to reunite with their families, but they were unrecognizable to their grandchildren who are now middle aged. And when Dan and Drew tried to apply for jobs, they were declined on account of an antiquated law that makes it illegal to hire the dead.
Junior Blay, a 50-year-old man, said he was born in 2022 to Oliver and Linda Blay of Old Town Night Vale. The Blay family was contacted about this and said they had not planned to ever have children, so Junior will likely have been an accident or a dramatic change of heart. Blay was wounded in his combat assignment and returned home for treatment. He suffered third degree burns across his abdomen and arms and needs a skin craft, but the Night Vale VA has to wait for approval from the Red Mesa VA to clear his procedure, which could take weeks.
Jim Peters was honorably discharged from service and was heavily decorated with chevrons and medals. But his face sagged with exhaustion and history. His brother John was the first to greet him, but Jim could not match his brother’s tearful enthusiasm. Jim had seen too much, experienced too much, to ever feel normal again.
In light of the physical, financial, and spiritual crush on these men, the City Council announced that it would paint a giant American flag atop City Hall and play John Philip Souza’s famous patriotic march, “Bodak Yellow”, at all hours of the day over a loudspeaker. And the whole town cheered proudly, for they were truly taking care of our vets.
Let’s have a look at sports. The Night Vale High School wheel chair basketball team, captained by junior point guard Janice Palmer, won their semi-final game last night against Cactus Park High School 72-58. Forward Quinn Booman led the team with 20 points and also had 8 rebounds and 10 assists. The Scorpions fell behind by 16 points in the first half, but really found their inspiration at halftime. Coach Jacobite McPhee told his team not to get down on themselves because it’s impossible to make every single shot, you just have to have fun. McPhee then took out an acoustic guitar and sang the following original song.
[Joseph Fink sings] Physics is a science of made up numbers and rules So we can only make joy and pass the ball like fools. To win it leaves our hands of free will it’s true Cause you never ever know what that ball is gonna do. Physics is a science of made up numbers and rules So we can only make joy and pass the ball like fools. Yes we can only make joy and pass the ball like fools.
The team relinquished their illusion of control and dominated the second half offensively. The Scorpions face Pine Cliff this Saturday afternoon in the district tournament final, so let’s all get out there and support our team, really root for the ball to go into the… the hmm hmm, the the, you know the thing that the ball is supposed to go into. And this has been sports.
Senior strategic advisor Jameson Archibald at the Intergalactic Military Headquarters, speaking from an inflatable raft atop an infinity pool filled with Remy Martin Black Pearl Cognac, said he and his top strategists in the Intergalactic Military Headquarters still have no idea what the Blood Space War is about. But they’re glad to learn that the Polonian armies are approaching. “We’ve got all this money piling up for the war and we’re getting bored with hosting Lamborghini demolition derbies,” Archibald said. “The government keeps sending us cash and we’re like OK y’all, but like what are we supposed to do with iiit? And the feds are like, I don’t care start a war or something.” But unfortunately the government allotment for an interstellar war was wiped out on a failed investment in a tech startup that was pitched to them as “the Uber of Netflix of Facebook” by a 7-year-old wearing a suit. So, the Intergalactic Military Headquarters was forced to ask for contributions. Hence, the PTA bake sales. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Secret Police were able to provide several armored combat vehicles, two tons of enriched uranium, and a satellite activated missile launching system, all of which had been donated to the Secret Police by the US army.
Sheriff Sam said they had wanted to keep all that high-tech battle gear, but using a nuclear submarine to stop Night Vale citizens who were fishing without a license, created to what Sheriff Sam referred to as “less than satisfactory optics”. Archibald said he was appreciative of the Secret Police’s charity, but he’d just received word that the Polonian ships are already within the outer limits of our solar system. So not sure there’s much left to do, really. He then took out a roll of 100-dollar bills from his shirt pocket and ate it like a Snickers bar.
An update on the high school basketball tournament. The City Council announced that there will be a parade for the team, win or lose, next Tuesday evening. The parade will feature giant floats in the shapes of famous basketball players, such as Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird, and Little Bow Wow. There will also be a celebrity appearance by Lee Marvin, who will be celebrating his 30th birthday on Tuesday. Aww. Happy birthday, Mr. Marvin!
The City Council expressed civic pride in this talented team of young athletes, and enjoined all of Night Vale to come out in celebration of sportsmanship, regardless of the outcome of the championship game. “Of course,” the single-bodied entity of the City Council said with uncharacteristic mirth, “we think our team will win.” The City Council’s many faces then winked in unison. “Also,” the City Council added, “If you look up in the sky, you’ll see that a large chunk of the moon just exploded and the Earth is surrounded by enemy space crafts, but there’s not much we can do about that, so let’s just cheer on our basketball team.” The City Council then held up their many fists and squealed: “Yay team!” as pieces of the moon began to thunder down around us.
Let’s go now to today’s Weather.
[No Good Day” by Windows to the Sky https://windowstosky.com]
I’ve just received an email from Harrison Kip, archeology professor at Night Vale Community College. Kip told me that while on a dig in 1993, he and his team of researchers found remnants of several spacecraft buried deep in central Nevada. Kip was studying fossilized remains to determine eating habits of early North American habitants, but what he found were several triangular titanium vessels, each roughly the size and shape of a Burger King. He tried to check his notes from that excursion, but those pages had been torn out of his journal. Despite this, he’s positive the ships he can see above our Earth are identical to the ones he found crashed in the desert 25 years ago. Inside those ships were creatures the size of hippos, with long dangling limbs covered in sharp teeth. Kip remembers calling the college to ask for more funding for this research, but before he could do anything, a black van drove up to the dig site and several men wearing business suits that were patterned in desert camouflage got out, they arrested Kip and his assistants, and had them reprogrammed.
Kip said the reprogramming was successful until today, when he heard my news reports about the Polonians, and his memories suddenly returned to him, and now he believes he knows exactly what has happened in the Blood Space War and how we will end it. He’s going to type up his notes while they’re still fresh in his mind, and get them over to me asap. Oh, this is so very exciting! Science saves the day. Once again. Uh huh, here’s a follow up email from Harrison. It says: “Hey Cecil, disregard whatever I said earlier, I don’t even remember what it was. Some guys I didn’t know showed up and put a metal helmet on me, there were a bunch of wires and knobs and lights coming out of it and it felt so peaceful and comfortable, like when you’re eating Belgian waffles with ice cream or binge-watching Terrace House, anyway I don’t remember what I sent you earlier since (--) have been deleted, so whatever it was it couldn’t have been [angrily] that important? Sincerely, Harrison?” No! No, this is terrible. OK, I’m going to forward Harrison’s first email back to him to see if it rejogs his memory. We’ve gotta learn exactly what- Hello? Hello there? Listeners, there are some men entering my studio. They’re wearing business suits made from a desert camouflage patterned fabric! Oh, Gucci, I love it! They’re, they’re putting this crazy hat on me and it has a bunch of lights and wires, hang on Night Vale, listen to this interview I recorded earlier today with John Peters – you know, the farmer. These boys are here trying to get me ready for fashion week, I-I-I think?
John Peters: Jim came home this week and I was real happy, happier than a pig starring in its own TV show about pig detectives solving pig murders. My brother taught me to play football when we was boys. He’d throw the ball and say: “Johnny, move your hands together like salad tongs when the ball gets near you, that’s called ‘catch’.” I tried so hard to catch that ball, but I never could. [chuckles] We had fun. Jim taught me so much and he took care of me, running off the bullies at school, buying me soda pops and candy canes from this man who lived in a trunk of a broken down ’56 Chevy in the alley behind the post office. I’m almost 60 years old and my brother left for the war back when I was 15. And to see him again, boy to see his face after so long, he ain’t changed one bit. He literally is the same age as when he left, 22 years old. But he’s not the same Jim. He don’t wanna throw the football or go looking for discount sodas and candy in weird alleys. No, Jim looks sad. His body’s strong but his mind seems so weak. I saw him crying the other day and told him what our papa always said to us: “Jim, boys don’t cry. Not without talking through their feelings with someone else.” So I put my arm around young Jim. I must have looked like a granddad - me so old, him so young - but our memories of each other were the same age. Jim cried into my shirt and said, “Johnny, I’ve been in that war darn near a hundred years. That’s a lot of space travel, not a lot of fightin’ but when there is fightin’ it’s gruesome.” Jim said he didn’t wanna see no more war, but he said that in his last battle he risked his life to disarm a bomb that would have killed ten of his fellow soldiers, and one of them was the General. “The General has a plan for ceasefire,” Jim said, “the General has a plan for peace. But I think the General needs me, Johnny.” I said, “Jimbo, I need you.” But I knew that I’d been without him for 40 years, while this General was with him for nearly 100. I knew I was lyin’ to Jim and myself. Jim hugged my neck and kissed my cheek. He donned his space suit and walked out into the corn field and disappeared. I think my brother is gonna save us all. Anyway, it’s a sad story, but it’s also happy. Like a goat playing a piano, stories carry lots of different emotions all at once.
Cecil: [sounding high] Alright, listeners, I’m back. I don’t remember what I was talking about, nor where I got this really cool hat. But City Council announced that the space ships that were surrounding our planet are gone. But they were deeply unnerved by the fact that the ships did not retreat, they simply disappeared. The City Council then added that the moon is still broken but honestly, they see this as a crisatunity to buy a new one.
Oh, don’t forget to come to the basketball championship parade on Tuesday.
Stay tuned next for simultaneous panic and relief, As you realize all of your emails are gone.
Good night, Night Vale, Good night.
Today’s proverb: Develop your chi. Really work that chi hard. Get sixpack chi. Totally swole with chi. Roll up those sleeves and welcome people to the chi show.

Happy 63rd Birthday comedian and actor Gordon Kennedy.
Gordon  was born of February 22nd 1958 in Glasgow but grew up in Tranent, East Lothian, he was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before studying physical education at Jordanhill College, now part of the University of Strathclyde.
I was a big fan of "alternative comedy" when it started to get going in the early 80's Kennedy first got together with some friends in 1980 making his debut at the Edinburgh festival in 1980 under the name The Bodgers this led on to the channel 4 show Absolutely, with the same prominently Scottish team, he cut his teeth as an extra in several shows like Russ Abbot, Kenny Everett and Les Dennis beforehand.
Since then, his production company, Absolutely Productions, have made Welcome To Strathmuir, the BBC Scotland comedy starring John Gordon Sinclair, and Radio 4 comedy series Baggage with fellow Scots Peter Capaldi and Phyllis Logan. He went on to become more mainstream and was the original co-host of the National Lottery Lottery show on Saturday nights with Anthea Turner.I suppose those that didn't follow the comedy scene will know Gordon from his time starring a Little John in noughties incarnation of Robin Hood on BBC 1.
If you're a bit older you might recall him in the fab Glasgow Kiss with Iain Glenn and Sharon Small at the turn of the millennium or a few years later as Sgt. Bruce Hornsby in Red Cap. He was also the narrator in the first series of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, as well as Mac in oor ain soap River City for 18 months. Kennedy ended sent an audition tape for a part Outlander, but missed out, I can't find out what, if any part he was considered for, he bounced back though appearing in the mini series The Spanish Princess, which just like Outlander is shown on the Starz network in the States, he also appeared in 4 episodes of the British-American period drama  Harlots.

Happy Mother’s Day Wishes From Dr. Mercola
By Dr. Mercola
I want to wish all of you moms out there a Happy Mother's Day today. If you're a mom, I want you to know I think you have one of the toughest jobs in the world. You play a key role in building our next generation. Mothering is a full-time job, in addition to whatever career or commitments you have outside of your home. Your job doesn't end when your kids leave home either. Your adult children of all ages can still find comfort and strength from your words and embrace.

Mother's Day, Without Mom
Today is the first Mother's Day without my mom. She passed away unexpectedly on July 6, 2017, two days before my 63rd birthday. My sister called me early that morning; it was a Thursday. As soon as I heard the tone of her voice, I knew something was wrong. I was afraid she was going to tell me that our father passed away. He was 88 at the time. When she said it was mom, time stood still.
For a few moments, I just held the phone in my hand and said nothing. I was somewhat in shock and definitely in denial. Maybe this was a just a nightmare. Losing her left me feeling devastated. In the days that followed, a flood of memories surfaced without warning or permission, and the feelings that came with them were overwhelming at times. My memories sabotaged my sleep and derailed my best efforts to accomplish my daily tasks.
In the beginning, I felt a physical void that's difficult to describe. I called my sister several times a day and cried with her. I imagine that many of you might also be grieving this year, and my sympathy goes out to you in a fresh new way. Some of you might also feel a sense of emptiness or loss surrounding your relationship with your mom.
Maybe it just isn't what you hoped it would be, due to circumstances beyond your control. Or she might be physically present but emotionally unavailable due to illness. Your roles have reversed, and you are caring for her the way she cared for you as a child. Reading the book "Letting Go, the Pathway to Surrender,"1 by Dr. David Hawkins really helped me in the early days after I lost my mom. David was a brilliant man and this was his last book before he passed. I deeply regret I never had the opportunity to interview him.
My Mom Believed in Me
Tumblr media
I am tremendously grateful that my mom was supportive of my dreams during my childhood, and she encouraged me in my goals and aspirations throughout my life — whether I envisioned becoming a priest or an astronaut, or eventually embracing medicine and becoming a doctor.
I remember reading Bible stories daily with her when I was very young. This played a large role in stimulating my passion for learning and reading. Reading is one of my greatest pleasures. I believe her emotional support in my early years was a significant force behind whatever success I have in life and it propelled my desire and ability to share health truths with you.
She loved me unconditionally. There may have been times when she didn't like me, but I know she always loved me. I recall a number of mischievous childhood stunts I pulled, including getting in trouble with local authorities. Even through rebellion, she believed the best and supported me.
Work Hard and Love What You Do
Tumblr media
At an age when most people retire, my mom started a new career. For nearly five decades prior, she was busy serving others as a waitress. Some persistent foot pain came out of it, which was only relieved by spending less time on her feet. So at 68 years old, I convinced her to start working at my medical practice.
In no time at all she made new friends, learned how to send emails, fax and scan documents, and file as needed. Technology didn't scare her. At 75, she mastered the basics of using a smartphone and would regularly text my siblings. This was no small feat, but she was determined to learn.
Mom looked forward to working each day. It gave her a sense of purpose and belonging, and I firmly believe it extended not only the years she had, but the quality of them. Retirement isn't for everyone, and it certainly wasn't for her. She was used to moving all day long and physical activity was important to her. Exercising in a gym, however, was a new concept for her but she fully embraced it at 74 years old.

Family Meal Time Is Priceless
My mom loved to cook and I have many memories of time together around the table for meals. She loved having her kids together after we had all moved out. No matter how busy we were at that time of life, we gathered often for dinner. It brought her so much joy to prepare and share a meal with family.
I also learned the value of spending time planning and cooking in the kitchen from my mom. If you can't do that for yourself, I hope someone you know can do it for you. My mom did the best she could to provide healthy meals for her family.
Families who make an effort to eat together at least three or four times a week enjoy significant mental and physical health benefits
Children and teens who regularly eat meals with their families have healthier eating patterns, better relationships, better school performance, and fewer psychosocial problems
The benefits of family dinners depend on the extent to which you use the time to genuinely connect and engage with your children
Preparing and eating meals together provides a great opportunity to pass along family traditions and helps children learn to value a sustainable food system
Be Grateful
When life gives you lemons, you can still make lemonade. My mom struggled with depression on and off at times in her life. Thankfully, she made it through every battle and came out grateful for her life and everyone in it. She had a strong faith in God and thanked Him for his many blessings daily.
Gratitude produces measurable effects on a number of bodily systems, including beneficial effects on mood and pleasure-related neurotransmitters, reproductive and social bonding hormones, cognition, blood pressure and more. Importantly, it lowers the stress hormone cortisol and inflammatory cytokines, which are often elevated if you have chronic disease. Health benefits associated with gratitude include:2,3,4,5
A greater sense of pleasure, as gratitude stimulates your hypothalamus (a brain area involved in the regulation of stress) and your ventral tegmental area (part of your brain's "reward circuitry," an area that produces pleasurable feelings)6
Improved sleep7 (especially if your mind has a tendency to go into overdrive with negative thoughts and worries at bedtime)
A higher likelihood of engaging in other healthy activities and self-care such as exercise
Higher relationship satisfaction
Improved work performance (in one study, managers who expressed gratitude saw a 50 percent increase in the employees' performance)
Reduced stress8 and emotional distress, in part by improving emotional resiliency
Enhanced well-being9 and improved mental health by triggering the release of antidepressant and mood-regulating chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and oxytocin, while inhibiting cortisol
Improved heart health,10 reducing the likelihood of sudden death in patients with congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease
Reduced inflammation and pain
Improved immune function11
Comfort From the Clouds
Tumblr media
This double rainbow appeared on the day my mom passed away as I was going to the beach for my daily walk. There are some interesting incidents that brought me comfort after my mom's transition. When I returned home after her funeral and went through my mail, I was completely caught off guard by one piece of mail.
I recognized the handwriting immediately. A birthday card from my mom. She must have mailed it the day before she died. She always remembered birthdays and holidays and loved sending special cards to everyone she loved. I feel so privileged to have received the last card she ever sent before she passed. I wasn't prepared to say goodbye to her so quickly but I'm grateful for many things.
I am especially grateful my mom was able to live as long as she did and diligently followed my health suggestions. It gave me great joy to hear her refuse many of her doctor's recommendations to place her on meds that she did not need. She never had to endure diabetes, high blood pressure, a heart attack, stroke, cancer or dementia.
Thankfully she lived long enough to see all the time and sacrifices she made in raising our family. My mom was always very proud of me and that was a powerful motivation for me and one of the primary reasons I am so motivated to try to change the world to be a better place. Thanks mom, I will always remember and love you.

My Mom Believed in Me
I am tremendously grateful that my mom was supportive of my dreams during my childhood, and she encouraged me in my goals and aspirations throughout my life — whether I envisioned becoming a priest or an astronaut, or eventually embracing medicine and becoming a doctor.
Work Hard and Love What You Do
At an age when most people retire, my mom started a new career.
