He couldn’t stop himself from heading to Xiaoge, to lament his struggles with their Tianzhen to the other man that was also stuck with Wu Xie. Pangzi knew he wouldn’t be asleep. Lounging? Sure. But not actually asleep. He wasn’t capable of sleeping in. “Xiaoge! Of course, you were right. He’s fine. But this kid is trying to stress me out I swear!” He came into the room already complaining. "Hm." Xiaoge mentally nodded with a vague hum, not moving an inch.  "Did he say what it was?" Xiazi's voice came from somewhere in Xiaoge's hair, although his body still looked dead. ... Stroking the cat's silky fur, the Old Monk briefly glanced at the direction Zhao Yunlan had not yet come from. "He used to be my loudest disciple..." "He's really loud when he decides to take away my bonuses at the end of the month, Shifu," Lin Jing complained as he fit another box into the backseat of the car. "Mourning for someone who doesn't die. I think he reached a paradox I wouldn't know how to resolve." ... The classroom full of students waiting for his words reminded Shen Wei of his own time at college. He had a clear objective when he had decided to start that new life in the human world from an early steps, in the supposed youth that his ethereal appearance gave him. That objective had changed drastically because of a single decision, made hastily, in the pouring rain.

Monster Movie Madness p.2
We were back at it this week with three more monster movies. You can find more monster movie madness in part 1.
1. Catch the dragon
Tumblr media
We’re here for Zhu Jie! Our beloved Wang Meng! I think the best way we described this movie while watching was “Wang Meng’s own Time Raiders”.
It’s an absolute masterpiece. I would recommend it to nobody. We spent most of the movie scream laughing and wondering what the hell just happened and why. Don’t mention Zhu Jie ever again to Jack, Liz or because all we can think of now when we are reminded of him is when he falls over backwards like a freaking wooden plank after getting shot.
Zhu Jie’s character goes on an adventure to find the dragon that supposedly killed his father years ago. Turns out the dragon is actually the god of a minority village living in the forest, and it’s keeping them safe from (of course) shibie, as every monster movie needs at least two monsters.
Tumblr media
Anyway gotta love a movie in which so much happens while nothing happens the entire movie at the same time. 10/10 for Zhu Jie. I cannot wait for the sequel with hopefully Zhang Boyu as well.
2. Snow Monster
Tumblr media
This could’ve easily been a DMBJ movie, ngl. We got a depressed, know it all guy with an antiques store asked to go save someone in the middle of nowhere, a fat guy (nick)named Pangzi, a badass dude in all black and shitty uncles. Besides that we also get monsters AND we get to terrorize a minority village. Does it get more DMBJ than that? We also get another familiar face in this one! It’s madam yu and she looks absolutely spectacular!
Tumblr media
The boys go out to look for ML’s lost ex girlfriend. On the way they find a gigantic yeti and snow sharks. Of course, the yeti is kind and the god of a minority people. Shitty uncle wants the yeti’s genetic code for god know’s what reason so of course the only way to get it is by.... killing it? Lots of people die, one person gets squished by the snow monster. It ends with a vague ass hallucination. Good time.
Also did i mention the snow monster is first of all hella cute and fluffy, 10/10 would pet. but also hella thic? and speaking about thic, i must mention this guy because wow the entire movie i was just obsessed with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as happens to all guys i like in these movies, he dies, killed by pangzi and his lady. i ship this ot3.
Tumblr media
3. Sea Monster
Tumblr media
I don’t even know what to say about this one, it was just really bad. It was the longest, most boring commentary on pollution and the environment i’ve ever watched. It was so boring and so long, I was absolutely exhausted by the end of it. I don’t ever fall asleep while watching anything, but about halfway through I was ready to doze off.
So a girl throws a can of corona beer into the ocean (by accident) and the sea retaliates by throwing all shit that was in the sea back onto the beach and then a massive tentacle monster that kills quite some people. A girl loses her husband, with who she was taking wedding pictures on the beach.
Suddenly we’re on a boat. Some guy gets turned into a sea monkey after deep throating a tentacle. Now there are pirates too. Their boat gets taken over by the pirates. Sea Monkey kills people. They’re at the pirates’ village. People die. My two favourite guys die. Shibie appear, you think the sea monkey is eaten by shibie. no it survives perfectly fine. More people die. sea monkey dies. massive sea monster appears again. they put it on fire. sea monster survives. kill it the same way as the sea monkey. out of all of them three of them have survived by now. the movie is finally at it’s end. everyone is alive???? don’t litter.
this sucked. it was incredibly boring. i’m still exhausted and it’s been like 12 hours.

all the prime numbers on that salty ask list, just to make you do math on a saturday morning >:3
........................ man come on
Okay fine we're doing all the prime numbers on this list. I'll humor you.
2. Any popular fandom OTPs that you only BroTP?
Fuck idk uhh I was never really a fan of SangYao romantically?
3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?
I will just say yes and leave it at that.
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
Pingxie isn't that bad and I see the appeal behind it but some of y'all are too much there I said it.
7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?
I mean... those of you who have known me for a while probably know that I used to be into h*talia but keep that shit away from me now.
11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
Not really? No one is coming to mind.
13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?
I think we should let Xiaoge be a weird little guy. He's been through enough shit he should be able to do whatever the hell he wants he can't be sexy all the time.
17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…
Instead of The Entirety of Yi City Happening, Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen stay together and wander the world and eventually settle down and found a sect together I think that would be nice.
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
Oh boy. *cracks knuckles*
I was not looking forward to this section but I think some of you need to chill. Please. We're here to have fun. This may be a hard pill to swallow but sometimes you gotta accept that people didn't ask. They didn't ask for shipping opinions, they didn't ask for watchlists, they didn't ask to have the same fandom experiences as you. And sometimes things that are canon are worse. There's more to a show than romance and more to romance than two conventionally attractive people making eye contact. Thank you.
23. Unpopular character you love?
Song Lan did nothing wrong.

for the fandom blorbo ask thing did you already get dmbj?? if u did that one already then i'll take a shovel and dig out any memories of bnk characters you've got
My dear friend my beloved thank you for giving me another opportunity to dump more of this bullshit on you.
Blorbo: Pangzi my beloved my everything. He's supposed to be the fat guy comic relief but carries the series honestly.
Skrunkly: I'd say Zhang Rishan but just the bright eyed young man he is in Mystic Nine, not yet the Juimen President and weirdo that he is in Tomb of the Sea. Off topic but it's very important to me that I tell you about this one scene from Tomb of the Sea in which he and Liang Wan, a miraculously still alive female character and his love interest are leaving the desert and she tells him "hey I'm still kinda in love with you" to which he responds "sorry. I've dedicated my life to Fo Ye, my dead boss from the 1930s." And then she blasts him with pepper spray. In the desert.
Scrimblo bimblo: Ba Ye. This funky little man. I've only had him for three episodes of Mystic Nine and I love him.
Glup shitto: Kanjian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what has made my brain latch onto that slingshot himbo but I don't care. Highlights include teaching Wu Xie how to use a slingshot so he can cheat on a test and a guy dragging him into a meeting like "hey I found this guy outside can we keep him?"
Poor little meow meow: Wang Can I guess. He's an asshole but by god was he fun. And Hei Xiazi, who only falls under the pathetic category.
Horse plinko: Liu Sang. He gets whumped to hell and back and we love to see it.
Eeby deeby: Oh absolutely Chen Pi. I've only had him for three episodes of Mystic Nine and I hate him. The living embodiment of "I also choose this guy's dead wife" and a freak (derogatory) among freaks (affectionate). Crimes include wanting to fuck his master's wife and putting Zhang Qiling in a basket.

My #1 post of 2022
I have been working on this one for a couple months, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.  This movie was one that I watched nearly every day as a kid and it was fun to combine it with heihua, so please give it a read!!!!!

In the name of me being creative and unpredictable - Xiaodge for the ask meme please?
ah, xiaoge my beloved!
My first impression
my first exposure to him was through the flashback scene in sha hai where the tiesanjiao are fighting in xinyue and i went. hm! interesting. interesting! especially because i think this was right after wu xie says the infamous 不许叫他小哥 line and i was squinting at the screen going hmmmm does this mean.........something.............and then as i went further into sha hai was like oh fuck this entire story is about this man's absence. fuck.
My impression now
love him. so underrated. if i think too much about how he learns to be human again after a lifetime of dehumanisation i start going unhinged.
Favorite thing about that character
black colour palette. this is a low-hanging fruit but i love it. also the way that if you put the tiesanjiao together he looks like their young boytoy, but he's actually, like, two and a half times their age. this is just a personal beloved silly dynamic to me. (do not take this too seriously this is for fun.)
Least favorite thing
uhhhhh i don't think there's anything about xiaoge i dislike, but i dislike the way he's sometimes treated by fandom. uh, i guess his self-sacrificial tendencies make me sad?
Favorite line/scene
the meaningful silences :) also every time he says wu xie or pangzi's names.
Favorite interaction that character has with another
i have a special place in my heart for pingpang interactions.
A character that I wish that character would interact with more
i want him to meet li cu. not because i want them to be adoptive father-son or whatever but because i want li cu to see the man who wu xie put him through hell for and get horribly, painfully angry about how he was judged as less in worth than xiaoge, while also trying not to be upset at xiaoge, because really, it's not his fault.
Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character
honestly i can't think of one? he's just such a unique character.
A headcanon about that character
okay so technically this is canon for hjgd/misty creed but he should get to relax in a sauna again. i like to think in retirement pangzi institutes monthly sauna visits.
A song that reminds of that character
creature by half alive mayhaps?
An unpopular opinion about that character
look i know and respect the spirit of don't like don't read but the prevalence of him as a sex kitten when amnesiac annoys me.
Favorite picture
this one:
Tumblr media
i get so much mileage out of it.

Daomu Biji: Wang Yueban
Birthday: 4/18
Astrological Sign: Aries ♈
A.K.A. Pangzi / Pang-Ye / Pang-Ge
Affiliation: Wu Xie and the Iron Triangle 🔺️
Descriptors:
Courageous/Passionate/Confident/Determined/Loyal/Cheerful
A very overdue birthday post for our beloved Pangzi from Daomu Bi Ji. Not only is he a pillar of the Iron Triangle, or one of the important angles, as Pangzi would say, but he is the most fun, loyal, and caring friend any person could have. Earn his trust, and there is nothing he wouldn't do to help you.
Tumblr media
Pangzi's character is quintessential to the DMBJ franchise. Yes, he serves as comedic relief in both drama adaptations and books, and yes, he's a bit too greedy for his own good - often spewing nonsense along the way - however he is one of the coolest characters in a series that is already chock-full of incredibly cool characters.
We often look at Pangzi as nothing more than a jester, only providing comedic relief when the series grows too dark for its own good. It's really easy to forget that behind Pangzi's brute force and witty banter, he is a force to be reckoned with all on his own.
Tumblr media
This particular scene from "Tomb of the Sea" perfectly encapsulates just how fun and reckless Pangzi can be. Highly energetic, intuitive, and intelligent, Pangzi is able to help Wu Xie from any spot on the field.
No only is he able to fool Huo Xiu Xiu into believing he is no more than a drunk and bumbling fool, but he also uses fake explosives to keep the rest of the greedy Nine Gates in check. In addition to this, he is able to both literally and metaphorically smoke out an incognito member of the Wang Family by using fake explosives.
Although Wu Xie did orchestrate the entire plan, it would not have been such an iconic scene without Pangzi's flair.
Tumblr media
What makes this scene one of my absolute favorite is the endearing way in which Pangzi stresses what a law-abiding citizen he really is. He is super cool and endearing all at once.
Tumblr media
Happy Belated Birthday,
Pang-Ye!

Lost Tomb Reboot Lewks: Part 14
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Stuff)
Warning: Spoilers for both seasons of The Lost Tomb Reboot and also vaguely for Daomu Biji in general
Tumblr media
For Look 72, Wu Xie strips out of his jacket and shirt so he can use the shirt as a makeshift air filter. Underneath he’s wearing a tight black a-line undershirt and a black bulletproof vest.
Welcome back, Wu Xie’s bare arms. We’ve missed you.
Tumblr media
So have Huo Daofu and Xiao Bai.
Tumblr media
Look 73 is a spare, unpretentious tee shirt and jeans combination that Wu Xie accessorizes with the looming spectre of death, the amorphous fog of the afterlife, and the shades of his departed loved ones.
Tumblr media
He looks chilly in this outfit; he needs a hoodie. Preferably a hoodie with Xiao Ge in it.
Tumblr media
(more after the cut!)
When he comes out of this interstitial space he’s added the lifesaving accessory of a nebulizer mask. My son had one of these as a baby, that had a duck face on it.  Wu Xie’s mask is a sensible orange color. I am sensing a missed opportunity here.
Tumblr media
Look 74: When he feels a little better, Wu Xie switches into this absolute crusher of a look.
Tumblr media
Featuring a beautifully fitted, butter-smooth brown leather jacket, and his trademark chaps trousers, he is ready to get back on the adventure trail in a big way, impending death be damned.
This is a good outfit for having a tragic conversation with your beloved real uncle while your shady not-really-uncle won’t give you guys one fucking minute of privacy to say your goodbyes.
Tumblr media
He accessorizes this outfit with the blatant theft of a motorbike with a sidecar, which he uses to hold his backpack, and of a cool motorcycle helmet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He looks a bit like Qin Hao (Sha Hai’s Wu Xie) here, doesn’t he? He’s got that harder look in his eye, reminding us that he is still a relentless motherfucker when he needs to be.
If you’re hoping for any scenes in which Zhu Yilong is clearly actually riding this motorcycle, incidentally, don’t hold your breath.
Tumblr media
I have seen Zhu Yilong on a moving motorbike in Granting You A Dreamlike Life, so I believe he could be filmed on a motorcycle where his face and the motorbike’s moving wheels are visible in the same shot, but TLTR does not give us this level of motorcycle fanservice, alas.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Wu Xie completes this outfit with a greyish, brownish button-up shirt with a tabbed buttonhole detail at the collar, and a belt with an intriguing quick-release buckle.
Tumblr media
And backpacks; lots of backpacks.
Tumblr media
Much later, we will see that this is a great a good look for bonding with fellow members of The Unnecessary Thigh-Strap Club.
Tumblr media
Look 75  is everybody’s orange jumpsuit.  It is the same jumpsuit on everybody, but each person wears it a little differently.
The collar has three stripes below the closure, which creates some visual interest and plays up the different ways the characters wear it.
Tumblr media
Liu Sang and Xiao Bai both wear it with the collar zipped up. Later, Liu Sang can use this structured collar to accentuate all the blood that’s going to be on his face.
Tumblr media
Wu Xie wears the color open and popped, perfect to set off some intense gazing
Tumblr media
And Pangzi wears it to get comfy with his favorite cuddle buddy.
Tumblr media
Look 76 is Xiao Bai’s awesome pumpkin-and-green ensemble that she wears at the campsite in Thunderville.
Tumblr media
It’s utilitarian enough to fit right in with the rest of the team, but bright enough to give it a feminine touch. The jacket has a deconstructed hem, giving it a casual vibe and showing off her ass.
Tumblr media
Xiao Bai’s clothes usually have some kind of interesting tailoring detail, while always being very practical. It’s a nice, consistent way of showing her personality. She enjoys being cute and fashion-forward, but she is a woman of action first.
Bonus Look 1
This Look belongs to Liu Sang, the third member of the Unnecessary Thigh-Strap club. I am not complaining about any of the unnecessary thigh straps.
Tumblr media
Bonus Look 2
This look is just Xiao Bai running in a wetsuit. I’m not made of stone.

Some whumptober prompts: Xiao Hua and blindness, with Hei Xiazi helping him through it --- Ransom or auction and Liu Sang ---- Self-induced injuries to escape and XiuXiu ---- "You're still not dead?" and Pangzi ----"Who did this to you" not sure who the whumpee is but Wu Erbai saying it. I would definitely prefer if it had a happy or at least hopeful ending!
ANDDDDD THAT’S A WRAP!!!! fox my beloved here is the last one, as requested!!! thank you so much for sending these in!!!
24. self-induced injuries to escape
Let it be known that Huo Xiuxiu is not offended that she’s been kidnapped. After all, it’s not her first time, and it certainly won’t be her last; in fact, she’s come to find a certain kind of excitement in it. A bit of spice, if you will, to liven up her week.
What is quite offensive is how absolutely incompetent these particular kidnappers are. It would almost be amusing in a way, if that incompetence hadn’t only kicked in when they were tying her up, and not before they’d beaten Xiao Hua unconscious.
“Hold on,” Xiuxiu mutters under her breath as she works at the ropes binding her wrists with a shard of glass. “Hold on, Xiao Hua-gege, just a little longer.”
The glass isn’t the most elegant solution, she’ll admit, but it was the most easily available. Idiots tied her up with rope, and then threw her in the same corner of this cramped room as a couple of broken bottles. She’s not even sure which is worse: the idea that they were too stupid to notice, or that they thought she was too stupid to notice. Either way, Xiuxiu usually prefers the more delicate methods of slipping her bindings, but considering she’s not even sure Xiao Hua’s still breathing—speed is of the essence, at the moment.
Every movement she makes with the glass forces her to bite down on her lip a little bit harder, until she tastes the same sticky iron there that she can feel coating her palms. She’s not sure how many cuts she’s got at this point. Certainly enough to ruin whatever claim she’d had to pretty hands before today.
(The thought doesn’t bother her that much. Of the two of them, Xiao Hua’s always had the better-looking hands, anyways.)
When the rope finally gives, she has to choke back a sob of relief before tossing it and the glass to the side. Her own bloody palms be damned, she scrambles over to Xiao Hua and holds two trembling fingers under his nose.
Whatever relief she’d felt before is a thin note to the chorus that thunders through her when she feels Xiao Hua exhale. “Don’t scare me like that,” she whisper-yells at him, even though he probably can’t hear it. Not that he’d listen even if he could. She keeps going as she struggles to get him on her back, quietly cursing and panting. “I better be your favorite after this, I better not hear one word about Hei-ye for a week after this, I swear—”
She stops herself when she manages to get over to the door. This is the real moment of truth. She hadn’t gotten a good look at the layout of the place on their way in; their kidnappers could be waiting just outside, or they could’ve all left already.
One breath in. One breath out. Xiuxiu shoves the door open.
“Ah, there you are,” Hei Xiazi greets her from just a couple feet away, in what appears to be a badly lit card-playing room. He’s got one hand curled in a half-conscious guy’s jacket collar, the other pulled back in a fist. As she steps, he releases his grip, letting the guy collapse to the floor, taking a folding chair down with him in a loud crash. There are other bodies scattered around, maybe knocked out, maybe dead, she can’t get a good look in before Hei Xiazi’s in front of her.
Xiuxiu immediately leans forward, letting Xiao Hua slide towards him. “Take him, he needs to get to a doctor, they hit him in the head and I don’t—”
Hei Xiazi stops her word vomit with a cluck of his tongue as he shifts Xiao Hua to his own back with ease. (Bastard.) “Doctor’s the first stop, don’t worry. We’ll get you and Hua-er here fixed up in no time.”
“I’m fine,” she says as she follows him across the room to the exit.
That gets her an immediate snort. “You barely touched me and I can still smell your blood all over my jacket. This is my nicest one, by the way.”
“You’d have gotten blood on it anyways, at some point,” she says, frowning, hands held carefully in front of her.
“Sure, but I’d prefer it not be yours.” Hei Xiazi pauses before the door, craning his neck around to look at her. Even with the sunglasses, his gaze feels heavy. “I’m sorry I was late, meimei.”
For a moment, the words just hang between them, a rare glimpse at the human under the hired gun. Then it cracks, as Hei Xiazi grins and adds, “Next time, be a good little damsel in distress and have some patience, okay?”
Xiuxiu rolls her eyes, but as she steps out after him, she thinks: I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
No need to worry about her own hands when there’s always too more pairs willing to catch her, after all.

How are you my sunshine?
Give me a character - Wang Pangzi and Hei Xiazi
HELLO MY BELOVED ☀️☀️☀️ ok I answered Pangzi HERE but I will give the ✨rundown✨ on my beloved weirdo, HXZ
(From this sexy, sexy ask list)
How I feel about this character: I love him. I love him so much. He’s the only thing that kept me watching the horrifically boring mute village arc in TLTR. He can rock a sarong. He has a stupid mullet. Xiao Hua wants to kiss him and so do I. Jack (@psychic-waffles) joked that everyone in DMBJ has had a weird crush on HXZ at least once, and that includes me and HXZ himself.
LOOK AT HIS DUMB FACE:
Tumblr media
(Ok also, SORRY, I have too much to say: he’s silly, and he’s ridiculous, and he’s probably always wearing too much cologne, but he’s also immensely practical and skilled, and I really love that duality of his personality. It reminds me a lot of Pangzi, tbh)
People I ship with our favorite glasses wearing bimbo (endearing): ok so as I joked above, I do think everyone has had a Weird crush on him at some point that has made them seriously question things about themselves. But in terms of actual ships, I am Deep in HeiHua hell, and it’s all @humanlighthouse’s fault, with her sexy, sexy fic and her juicy, juicy brain
My non romantic OTPs for This Idiot: oooo ok so right off the bat, I LOVE his relationship with Zhang Qiling (“6 times more protein than beef!”), and I wish we could see that explored more. I think they understand each other in ways others can’t really hope to, and I think they see the humanity and brutality in each other. Also, no one brings out ZQL’s annoyed 😒 more than HXZ and I love that
Tumblr media
Mmm I also love his friendship with Wu Xie and Pangzi, and I’m super intrigued by how he and Xiuxiu might engage with each other. Ok AND ALSO Li Cu of course (he puts so much fucking effort into his shitty desert man costume and then Li Cu sees through him in 2 seconds? HXZ is ready to be a dad IMMEDIATELY) and Su Wan, but ALSO the desperado fam!!! I like to imagine that after TLTR HXZ likes to take JiaJia and Bai Haotian out for hot pot on Xiao Hua’s credit card ✨no we are not going to talk about how his heart tugs or his eyes tighten when Jia Kezi finally starts feeling safe and comfortable enough to wear low collars again :)
(ASIDE: I am listening to @s1utspeare’s playlist again and a song just said “in every group of friends there is a whore” and I am YELLING the timing y’all...immaculate)
Unpopular opinions about my favorite dumbass: uhmmmmm honestly not sure...probably that I don’t really connect with the actor portraying him in Sha Hai? Just on first impressions / introductions? (I think he has an uphill battle with me, because I LOVED Baron Chen and Liu Yuning’s versions so much)
One thing I wish had happened: in TLT3, I wish we had seen more interactions with him and XiuXiu! Honestly I wish we had gotten more XiuXiu in general. An underutilized queen.

Hi darling
You write such an awesome metas on fictional character so I wanted you to ask that what's your thought on Huo Dao Fu.
😊
AH OMG!!! Your ask could not have come at a better time, cause I have a feeling this man’s gonna be an important part of my next fic, so I really should start figuring him out. He’s SUCH A LIL WEIRDO??? honestly i love him, even though he’s a total Bitch 97% of the time, but I think at heart he’s just Looking For Something, as are all the characters in this show.
What really interests me about Huo Daofu are his character parallels with Wu Xie, and I think that’s where most of the conflict between them comes in. Wu Xie, whether he means to be or not, is the Focus of Jiumen a good seventy-five percent of the time. Not always in a positive manner, because in Sha Hai they were all about ready to kick his ass, and in Reboot he pisses them off pretty good with his Warehouse Eleven stunts, but there’s a level of attention on him that other members of the families don’t receive, and I think Huo Daofu notices that, and is like “hey wait a minute why is he getting all the spotlight I want some spotlight >:( He’s not even doing a good job why is everyone paying attention to him”
Cause this bitch. THIS BITCH. He tried to be that bitch. He TRIED SO HARD. He went to EUROPE. He went to EUROPE and got a fucking like??? medical degree???? Like he went to GERMANY??? who does that?? not fucking wu xie, that’s who. Wu Xie went and got like a history degree or some shit which was just par for the course. But HUO DAOFU. He was DIFFERENT. He was gonna be THE SHIT. He was gonna be the unabomber of Jiumen, was gonna blow all that shit up and then say “fuck u” and all the future generations of Jiumen children were gonna hear horror stories about how Unique and Wild Huo Daofu was and he was never gonna have to deal with any of them ever again.
BUT THEN WU XIE DECIDED TO BE PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE AND HE DIDN’T EVEN DO ANYTHING OFF THE BEATEN PATH. HE LITERALLY JUST FOLLOWED WU SANXING AROUND FOR LIKE. A YEAR. AND EVERYONE LOST THEIR MINDS. Like if I had been Huo Daofu and tried SO HARD to be different from everyone else in my generation and then this Dumb Little History Twink kissed a Zhang and found some wild swamp treasure and everyone went nuts about it, I would have been pissed off too.
Cause Jiumen is like. Annoying as hell, and everyone has a different way to deal with the fact that they’re a part of a treasure hunting org that has been around for hundreds of years and features immortals and weird-ass dudes with unbelievable martial arts skills and also Wu Sanxing. Xiaoge deals with them by Fucking Off Forever. Zhang Rishan deals with them by being The Most Competent Person In Any Given Room, and Huo Daofu deals with them by being The Biggest Bitch He Can Be, which isn’t even that much of a bitch, because there is always going to be a bigger bitch in Jiumen, and his name is Wu Xie. So it just backfires on him, because NO ONE GIVES A SINGLE FUCK.
We’re introduced to him at Xiao Hua’s fake funeral (which lmao i love that) when he’s making some Evil Plans with the rest of Jiumen, but not for the same reasons, cause when they actually get to the desert, Huo Daofu does not care about the treasure pits. He doesn’t even go down into Gutongjing (I’m pretty sure), he just hangs out in the camps because he doesn’t CARE about the treasure, he just wants to keep Wu Xie from succeeding, wants to say, see, look, I can do things too, I can be clever and cunning, I can take them all down from the inside out and I don’t even need friends to do it.
Huo Daofu is jealous of Wu Xie, I think, because Wu Xie is free of the confines of Jiumen, and Wu Xie has friends, and Wu Xie didn’t have to go to another country where he knew no one and didn’t even speak the language and work so hard and be fucking brilliant in ways that no one knows about and doesn’t always, always get overlooked in favor of someone who disregards everyone’s favor, but receives it anyway.
So when Pangzi shows up with Wu Xie, half-dead, on Huo Daofu’s doorstep, I think a little vindictive part of him goes serves him right.
But Huo Daofu is not a part of Jiumen in the ways that matter, and he’s a doctor, first and foremost. He took oaths because he wants to help people, he wants to save them, and even if he hates Wu Xie down in the pits of his stomach, he’s not just going to let him die. And so he follows Wu Xie to thunder city because, as he says, “I want to be there when you die.” He’s not going to kill him, he can’t do that, he’s a doctor, but that small, mean part of him wants to watch Wu Xie fall.
(Also I love @kholran’s headcanon that Huo Daofu is Wu Xie’s bitchy ex, bc like YES??? OF COURSE???? like they had an on-again, off-again thing cause they were like “we’re not doing this with the Jiumen women” but they’re WAY TOO ALIKE and just ended up fighting all the time.)
Reboot loves the Rule of Threes, which is where an idea is repeated three times in order to create a pleasing pattern. Human brains love patterns, and so when we see the Iron Triangle, when we see the three pills that mark the stages of Wu Xie’s illness, when we see the three missing people from Sanshu’s journey, our brains go oh that’s important (and Reboot ALMOST kills the game, ALMOST knocks it out of the park, but then they have FOUR story arcs instead of THREE, and it drives me ABSOLUTELY FUCKING INSANE. WHY DID THEY DO THIS. WHY).
And Huo Daofu is a FANTASTIC tri-tier replica of Wu Xie’s Greatest Hits, which are:
Being a sort of outcast/family runaway (Wu Xie has very clearly said Fuck Everyone Who Isn’t Sanshu, and Huo Daofu has aligned himself with the Chen clan, because the Huo’s are like Fuck Men (which honestly good for them but pLEASE love ur special doctor boy he’s getting a Complex))
Acting based almost Solely on Emotions when in the Heat of the Moment (i.e. dropping his entire life to go play doctor with a man who will not calm down for any length of time in order to actual REST)
Solving problems that no person should be able to solve because he’s smart as shit
Narratively, he’s a FANTASTIC foil for Wu Xie, because not only does he essentially hold this man’s life in his hands, but because he is what Wu Xie could have been if he hadn’t met Pangzi or Xiaoge, if he hadn’t had support from other people. And I don’t think that’s Huo Daofu’s fault, because he and Wu Xie are so, so similar. He just never got the people he needed, and its so clear that he’s achingly alone all of the time, so no wonder he’s jealous of Wu Xie and wants to become part of this little group so damn badly, even as he’s protesting and saying, “no, no, I want you to die, literally nothing would give me more pleasure, please die right now, I’m waiting.”
Sure, he’s a flipper-flopper ass bitch, but he’s trying his best with what he’s got, and shit, that’s not a lot. He’s got zero support system. I mean why the fuck is he making street churros? Even Zhang Rishan, who has NO culinary expertise or connections whatsover, gets to live in a restaurant, while Huo Daofu has to make fried dough in an alley and then keep people from choking on their own lungs on his damn kitchen table. Someone please help this man.
this is SO LONG i’m sorry but essentially I think that Huo Daofu is Like That because he’s trying so hard to be someone, and no one is paying any attention, and the person he would most relate to, Wu Xie, is off doing God knows what with his polycule of friends and Huo Daofu’s all by himself and like??? i would be SO FRUSTRATED??? please give this man a break and also give him Love??? like, this screenshot speaks VOLUMES (photo credit to @hey-its-wei)
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HIM!!!!! LOOK AT HOW FUCKING HAPPY HE LOOKS!!!! JUST TO BE THERE!!!! WITH A GROUP OF PEOPLE!!!!! WHO HAVE SEEN HIM AND LISTENED AND SAID “hey, you can come with us, we’ll take you, you don’t have to be alone anymore.”
I said earlier that Huo Daofu, like everyone else in this series, was Looking For Something. And like many of our beloved Wu Crew, he was looking for a family. And look! He found them :)

Hils Watches Conjuring Curse - Part 1
IT'S BABY TRIANGLE MOVIE DAY! Sorry to Mysterious Lotus Casebook but my tomb boys come first. I'll be back to you later.
Disclaimer: I adore DMBJ. It's been my main fandom for the past 3 years. But there's no denying it's utter nonsense so proceed in the knowledge that I will most likely be (fondly) roasting the shit out of this
I have no idea how many parts this liveblog is going to be. The movie is nearly 2 hours long, and those who have been around for a while will know that I am very Not Normal about these idiot boys.
Okay, I'm going in!
Tumblr media
Okay, so we're starting with a flasback to grandpa Wu. Interesting.
Tumblr media
Ah, shit, I forgot about the creepy dolls from the trailer and the poster. Thankfully it's lunchtime here so it's not dark. Yes, I am a wuss even when it comes to stupid tomb shows
Tumblr media
NOPE NOPE NOPE
Tumblr media
I hope we cut to the Iron Triangle soon or this liveblog is just going to be me screaming about scary dolls
DUDE THAT WAS NASTY! I'm not sharing a screenshot because you didn't really see much but random dude just died horribly
Tumblr media
XIAOGE!! Just the back of his head and I'm already having feelings
Tumblr media
PANGZI MY BELOVED! He's wearing the necklace! I'm fine! Absolutely normal. Is that a translation of what it says on his shirt or they just telling us what his job is?
Tumblr media
In this house we speak to Pangzi with some fucking respect!
Tumblr media
THERE HE IS! He just saved Pangzi's life when a trap activated so I am awash with pingpang feels already.
Tumblr media
Sigh. I suppose subbing Xiaoge as Qiling is better than subbing it as Kylin
Tumblr media
Of course he's keeping count. God.
Tumblr media
SOBBING IN PINGPANG
Tumblr media
Of course someone has mailed Wu Xie a cursed doll. That's the plot of so many DMBJ fics
Tumblr media
Retirement?? You look like you should still be at university studying architecture
Tumblr media
Xiaoge napping in the back while Wu Xie and Pangzi discuss the plot while driving. Yep, this is definitely DMBJ
Tumblr media
I'm assuming this is supposed to be set some time between Sha Hai and Reboot, but he has big Ultimate Note Pangzi vibes
Tumblr media
Okay, I love them. All Pangzi does is say 'can you smell gas' and Wu Xie immediately knows what he's doing and goes along with the fake gas leak so they have an excuse to break into the house
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's so true (affectionate)
Tumblr media
Aww yay he's doing the hand thing
Tumblr media
They said the title of the thing in the thing!
Tumblr media
Look at Xiaoge standing on the roof of the van while it drives along like a total badass
Tumblr media
Now I see why Xiaoge is on the roof. Not just so he can act as lookout, but because everyone else is inside being Loud. He really is introvert goals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aww Wu Xie tossed him some water. Gotta keep hydrated.
Tumblr media
No one can murder us while Xiaoge is here. It's fine.
Tumblr media
Of course the shady gang of bandits know Wu Xie
Tumblr media
Yeah, you've heard of me. But have you heard of my (other) boyfriend who will most definitely fuck you all up if you try to kill me
Tumblr media
Yep, definitely need to inform the authorities about this definitely not illegal tomb raid we're about to embark on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not sure how I feel about Wu Xie threatening to use Xiaoge as a weapon. Not that I think he'd actually ask Xiaoge to kill people for him but something about this just doesn't feel right.
God, I'm only 20 mins into the movie and I've hit the image limit. This is going to be a long one, fam.
Part 2

10 Characters I Fell In Love With In 2021
As tagged by @fan-man-huaisang thank you!
What did I watch in 2021? *Checks list*. Oh. I watched A Lot.
2021 was very much dominated by DMBJ in all of it's forms but my completed watchlist also included Word of Honor, Sleuth of Ming Dynasty, Vincenzo, and Beyond Evil which all made a big impact on my heart too.
1. Ba Ye (The Mystic Nine) my beloved 💜 My favourite thing about him has to be his brain. He's so clever! Especially when it comes to people. He uses his body language to seem unassuming and plays up the dramatics but he is intelligent and observant and can bicker with the best of them. (And looking wonderfully handsome in his changshan and glasses is just a bonus.)
2. Zhang Rishan (Ultimate Note, Tomb of the Sea, The Mystic Nine) <- that was the order I watched them in, it was Tomb of the Sea that made me take notice of him. There's something about his expedition into Chen Pi's territory where he gets dirtied up (after so many scenes in pristine suits) that I freaking love. THEN I saw M9 and got to know the gremlin youth of Zhang Rishan and it got even better.
3. Hei Xiazi (Ultimate Note, Tomb of the Sea, The Lost Tomb Reboot) Kickass abilities + sassy tongue + absolute dork = my ideal self my favourite kinda guy. I admit I dont know if I want to be him or be friends with him more, but there's a great mix of the mythos of the blind mercenary and the dork in a leather jacket who is very good at what he does that is so much fun to watch.
4. Pangzi (TLT, TLT2, Ultimate Note, Tomb of the Sea, TLT Reboot) admittedly the first Lost Tomb did not have a great version of Pangzi, but the latter versions more than made up for it and I'm hard pressed to pick a favourite out of them. He's hilarious, he's a sweetheart, he's heart achingly loyal and fantastically confident. Through all adaptations here was a character who, although bigger than his model-like counterparts, was as competent and as valued as the others in the team which is what won me over.
(Only a couple of times do they make a comment about him needing to lose weight - but each of those times it was because they were trying to hurry through a narrow rock fissure and wouldn't have gotten stranded at all if they just TAKEN OFF THEIR BACKPACKS FIRST. Dumbasses.)
5. Sui Zhou (Sleuth of Ming Dynasty) I know it's probably shallow to say that his face made me want to watch this show, but it's true. I love everything about his look. I also love that he's a character who's been through some shit and is figuring out how to carry it and still do some good with his life. He doesn't do it perfectly, he is a bit of a recluse, but he doesnt let his pain warp his values. He's still a good man.
6. Wang Zhi (Sleuth of Ming Dynasty) when he's first introduced as someone you have to be so very wary of, I didnt know how much I was going to love him. His life is a high wire balancing act between pleasing the Emperor and not pissing off his peers so much they want him dead, between his ambition and the temptation of corruption. He has very little agency over his life and so much authority for someone so young. He's fascinating and the glimpses you get from under the facade are so endearing.
7. Lee Dong Sik (Beyond Evil) oof how do you even start when it comes to Lee Dong Sik? Much like Sui Zhou he's a man who's lived through hell and is ultimately still trying to do good. He's like a tree that got an axe to it as a sapling and had no other option but to grow crooked to survive. He's twisted and he's complicated and his life has definitely warped his decision making, but he deserved none of what he went through and that makes him such a heart breaking character to watch.
8. Han Joo Won (Beyond Evil) I cant think of him without thinking of the word pristine. Theres a whole battle in his life between reputation, righteousness and repercussions and he's losing for most of his arc but I think it's the "I dont care" he said, caring deeply aspect of his character that makes you want to see him win.
9. Jang Han Seo (Vincenzo) is definitely one of those characters that stuck with me because they deserved so much better. He reminds me of Wang Zhi, just a kid who has to pretend in order to survive outside forces, but when he gets a chance of getting out from under his brother, he's so happy, and it ends so badly.
10. Ye Baiyi (Word of Honor) ending this list on a slightly light note, I picked Ye Baiyi from Word of Honor because he's a grumpy bastard who struts in, eats what he likes, bosses people around and it is glorious.
Tagging: @gaiahenshin @s1utspeare @psychic-waffles @oh-yebaiyi-you-sassy-bitch @bloodyleavesgoldentrees because I'd love to know yours!

in one of your answers about the characters game, you said that one of the reasons why you didn't watch tomb of the sea was the lack of xiaoge in the drama - very legit reason, it was very weird watching all those eps without xiaoge (poor wu xie), So for the same game, I'll ask about: our most beloved zhang qiling! If you still want to play!
Okay, sorry this took so long, but i just have.....so many feelings about XG?? Everytime i thought about answering this ask my brain just conjured up his general character and like. screamed. for a good half hour at a time. So you can imagine how this would delay typing lol
How I feel about this character: as mentioned above, i adore XG with my entire heart?? he is the incarnation of that "character specifically designed to push all your buttons" meme for me. i am currently watching UN (and liveblogging it to poor Sierra) and i have screenshot every single moment he appears on screen i think 😭😅 every incarnation of XG is wonderful, i really love him in the books too, i think they all portray a different facet of him and i love all of them SO MUCH for different reasons. i will always be very soft for HJJ and his blushy smiles at WX (so many smiles!!) and his general Tired Old Man vibe, but XYL is uh. well. is XYL. and his XG feels like he very precisely targets my brain's angst centers, i wanna wrap him in a million fluffy blankets and just let him nap at least SOME of his stress off 😰 (also, XG in every incarnation is just unbelievably hot. again, in different ways, but like. wow. NPSS really came for my brooding twinks loving ass my first crush was Albator/Captain Harlock I was five and never looked back)
All the people I ship romantically with the character: WU XIE! stupid dramatic soulmates of my HEART, my OTP to end all OTPs. Also, Pangzi, because fuck yeah, Iron Threesome! And PZ brings something to the equation that WX just cannot, they balance one another out so well, the triangle dynamic is truly powerful 🙏 And i don't personally ship them, but I am kind of intrigued by the idea of Something existing between XG and Chen Wen Jin? I briefly mentionned this to Sierra during my liveblog, kinda in the same way that WX and A Ning have Something going on, there is a lot of room for character parallels and history between them. Maybe in another universe? idk, but i'm Thinking
My non-romantic OTP for this character: BLACK BLIND i adore their dynamic?? I adore HXZ, period, but he is so....considerate? and caring? with XG? all the moments in the first episodes of UN when XG is beside himself with worry and BB just seamlessly takes over for him or watches over him have made me feel things for their brotp 😭
My unpopular opinion for this character: Do i have one? 🤔 maybe re: Liu Sang, whom i feel embarrasses/annoys him more than anything. XG certainly is grateful, but I don't see them ever being close :/
One thing I wish would happen / had happened to this character in canon: LET HIM REST PLZ SOMEONE LET THAT BOY TAKE A NAP AND MAYBE SOME XANAX BEFORE HE GETS TO HIS THIRTY-SEVENTH STRESS ULCER oh and a hug. just like. a twenty minutes long one, body completely compressed between WX and PZ so love can seep back into his tired old man bones 😭

Review: The Lost Tomb 2
Tumblr media
Year: 2019 Country: China Platform: Viki When it comes to DMBJ, I’m not here for the plot, I’m here for shenanigans and chemistry, for character dynamics that make me feral. I’m here for a good time. This show had very little of that.
The one good thing I can say for it had, hands down, my favorite Pangzi. Zhang Bo Yu is tied for the Number 1 spot with Chen Ming Hao from Reunion as *the* Pangzi of my heart (and they both truly feel like they are playing the same character - I could believe one as the younger version of the other). He is savvy, sassy and so dang hot. Unfortunately, that is all this entry into my beloved DMBJ franchise had going for it and that is so painful for me to admit. It took six months of slogging for me to make it through this when I normally rip through any DMBJ show with ease.
The chemistry of the Iron Triangle just never worked for me. I found the actor that played Wu Xie flat and lackluster. He’s Very Pretty but there was none of the innocent, fresh charm that is Wu Xie’s trademark, none of the whip-smart, blinding flashes of brilliance. Cheng Yi was possibly my least favorite Xiaoge, as well (Cheng Yi I’m so sorry I still love you I promise). He just had none of the presence Xiaoge requires, his silence never felt like it carried weight, his action scenes held no lethality and his chemistry with the other sides of the triangle felt empty.
The story suffers a bit (not that I ever really care much about DMBJ story) in that the book its adapting actually has no Iron Triangle presence, but the writers tried to shove it in… which I would have appreciated if it weren’t so frustrating trying to watch them be together and fall so short of gaining my love. The actors of the recurring minor characters were also just as flat. Ah Ning’s was rendered as annoying and weak instead of competent and compelling, Liu Xue Yi is normally fine but as Xie Yu Chen felt largely unmemorable. Really, all these descriptors can apply to the whole show in general. It had none of the fun, chemistry and sheer stupid enjoyability of other entries in the series.
It looks like Part 2 has recast both Wu Xie and Xiaoge, so I’m going to give it a shot, after I’ve taken a bit of time from this one.
