you know what just makes me really sad. i WANT to be excited about the karma music video. i WANT to be excited about her bringing ice spice on stage, about her singing GETAWAY CAR (my favourite rep song), about the new outfits and everything i loved about keeping up with the eras tour.
but i just cant. and maybe it’s parasocial but it genuinely feels like heartbreak as a poc swiftie that i just cant enjoy this woman’s music or content anymore that i used to absolutely love and get so excited about. i can’t get excited about the easter eggs for 1989 and rep TV or the stunning visuals in the music video. because i feel so betrayed and hurt that she’s throwing all this stuff at her fans to take the heat off her political inconsistency and white supremacist boyfriend. everyone’s already forgotten about holding her accountable because she dropped three new songs and a music video. i just also can’t get behind swifties villainising joe again and saying he’s worse than john mayer…more than matty healy.
the whiteness of this woman and her fandom have finally made me quit, and the worst part? she won’t care that she’s lost her poc fans. her white ones will continue eating up whatever she does and help her break record after record and become the billionaire she so clearly wants to be. she’ll still get her money and her clout, and her army of fans will harass anyone (including her) who points out her alarming flaws.
i cant get behind the hype anymore, and it feels like a real loss to me as someone who enjoyed taylor swift for fourteen whole years.

Okay Indigo, hit me.... show me what you got.
Closing out his 20s with a little angsty emo alt-pop R&B electric rock, Namjoon presents Indigo. Independent. Indulgent. Ingenious.
Tumblr media
Though I was unfamiliar with the Korean individuals collabing with Namjoon on this record, I did take a "pre-listen" to some of their work before Indigo's release so I could be familiar with their style.
Of course I knew who Erykah Badu is. Though very talented and respected musically, she is not without her own controversies.
And I know Anderson .Paak. I am a huge fan of Silk Sonic, his Grammy winning duo with Bruno Mars who I am also a big fan of.
So these are just my opinions after listening and learning the lyrics. These are my interpretations of the vibe of the songs...
Yun. It is hard hitting first-out-the-gate and I can understand why Joon put this song first. It's a statement: Fuck you, imma do what I want.
Tumblr media
Still Life, definitely love the R&B groove, love Anderson's vocals and the improvisation: "Joon: Shit happens in life...Paak: it's gonna be what it's gonna be brothah, you just have to do your thang." "Y'all can't lock me in a frame. I'm still life." The clever wordplay. A "still life" is typically defined as a tableau of inanimate objects such as flowers, fruit and other objects, arranged and then painted or photographed and framed. A still life. A moment in time. But in this song, I am seeing it meant as I am still LIFE, as in still living...you can't put me in a frame because I am living and breathing. So my take is this song says "let's keep it moving, never stay still, live life and don't let them define you by one frame of an image or one point or moment in time."
Tumblr media
All Day, yay finally experiencing TABLO, great song, nice fast beat. TABLO's delivery reminds me of Eminem... personally, I am not a big fan of Eminem, but in this song, that type of vocal from TABLO works well. The beat will probably get this song added to my "walking playlist." WE GOT DYNAMITE IN OUR DNA! Might be my fave song off the album.
Tumblr media
Forg_tful, an acoustic, laid back vibe, especially with the whistling... sort of John Mayer-ish? Very folk music-y and right up in the middle of Sawol's music genre kool-aid. Makes me want to order a caramel latte with a touch of almond milk at an independently owned hipster coffee shop. And I don't even like almond milk.
Tumblr media
Closer, nice little bubbly intro segues to smooth urban R&B. Love Mahalia's vocals. So. Most of this song is sung in English. Paul Blanco has a few Korean words and that's it. The lyrics are very sensual. I find it conveniently uncontroversial that it is Mr. Blanco singing about 'when our lips lock' and 'making her body go diddy diddy bop'. The lyric: "but you run away like a fish"... that one sticks in my head because it is so visual! I saw a small fish get scared and scurry away! Great song.
Tumblr media
Change pt. 2, unexpected electric riffs. Interesting that this song is entirely in English. I wonder who he is singing about? Harsh! Lol! Since its in English, it might be about the western music industry–as we know, they have to be spoken to in their language or they "just don't get it". Or it might be about a past significant other who did him wrong. "Some day a great grief will come for you." (That Miss Karma, she's the biggest fuckin' bitch I know.) "That's all I can say to you." (mic drop).
Tumblr media
Lonely, I'm so fuckin lonely... super emo alt pop rocker. Joon made this song and these lyrics sound like some sort of weekly Top 40 groove-fest banger. The hook is an earworm in the making. "I'm fuckin' lonely....so fuckin' lonely." And the bridge is big and awesome. This song is a masterpiece of chart topping geniusness songwriting.
Tumblr media
Hectic, with all its bright notes and beat, the gist of the lyrics say 'I been working my ass off, nothing glamorous about it, and people still say the same shit. Why am I doing this? What am I chasing? If doing this THIS way is a pain, how can I do it different?
Tumblr media
Wild Flower... a big sonic, soaring, epic type song. Youjeen's big vocals and lyrics give me Katy Perry Firework vibes. The MV visuals help push the "big" to me. It's just a big song. Big Namjoon asking "what is this big life I have? what does it mean?" The visuals of him standing on top of the mountain and being able to see the entire world and it's a dawning day...not gonna lie, I did tear up. Seeing Joonie like this, expressing his lyrics visually in a music video touches my heart for him. The stage surrounded by Army... him standing and then laying in the field of purple flowers (also Army), it's very emotionally stirring. But I have something to tell Joon... as time goes by, one still searches for who they are and sometimes we never really understand who we are. All we can do is live our truths as authentically as possible.
Tumblr media
No. 2, what a nice closing song to wrap it up. Don't look back anymore. There's nothing to prove. You've done your best. No lookin' back, no. The album ends and I'm smiling.
Tumblr media
Like everyone else, my heart swells with pride. Over all, the lyricism is off the charts of course. Joonie is a wordsmith. Thank you Kim Namjoon/RM for putting your soul out there, sharing your emotions and thoughts with us in such a poetically lyrical way. Well done.
My disclaimers: I am not a music expert. These are just my personal opinions. But I do have impeccable taste in music. 💜

Taylor Swift’s new album Midnight’s is great.
Lavender Haze- Really good she did a great job picking this as the opener track of the album
Maroon- I love how she changed the tempo from it being a very peppy opener to a slowish down beat and deep song personally this is my favorite song off this album along with hits different
Anti-Hero- This song gives a reference of how people seem to call her problematic or that she’s the root of every problem and the lyric “I think everyone is a sexy baby and I’m a monster on the hill” kinda seems like she’s referencing that she feels insecure about her height I personally relate to this song with having a narcissistic father and how he always blames me and my sisters of everything this song is relatable to me
Snow on the beach (feat. Lana del Rey- this song is so cute and is basically saying how love is impractical and weird like snow on the beach and when you find love it’s perfect just like seeing snow on the beach
Your on your own kid- realizing everything you have learned from and being on your own and that you always have been and that it’s ok to be on your own
Midnight rain- let’s face it we all know this is about Tom Hiddleston and how her and Tom’s relationship didn’t end up working out because they all wanted different things but the music in this song is so good
Question- asking an ex for explanations and asking questions but realizing what happened
Vigilante shit- In my opinion I think it’s about Scooter Braun and his ex wife because it doesn’t make sense as to why she would help out Kim Kardashian with what went on in 2016
Bejeweled- Realizing that it’s your time to shine but in all seriousness I think speak now Tv is coming next
Labyrinth- Taylor opens Labyrinth reflecting on a past heartbreak and feeling like she'd spend her whole life getting over it
Karma- Seems to be about Kanye but she talks about having good karma
Sweet nothing- a love song pretty sure about Joe
Mastermind- basically presuming that she is quite literally a mastermind and has planned literally everything in an order
The Great War- has a really good beet and the lyrics are great
Bigger than the whole sky- people assume that this is about her having a miscarriage
Paris- being in love and drowning out the noise of reality
High infidelity- this song is about Calvin Harris but I love this song cause my birthday is April 28 and she talks about April 29th
Glitch- So, who is Swift singing about? Well, it certainly seems like the song could be directly linked to her romance with Joe Alwyn. The two started dating in 2016 (which would explain the equivalent of six years' worth of days of being in love) and Swift has previously hinted on tracks like "Cornelia Street" (which fans have also speculated is about Alwyn) that they started off casual before getting very serious
Would’ve could’ve should’ve- Swift was only 19 when she was rumored to be dating Mayer, who was 32, in 2009. Though the two never publicly confirmed their relationship while they were together, they were invariably linked after Mayer appeared on stage with Swift a few times during her tour. Later when Swift released 2010’s Speak Now, she released the breakup track “Dear John” which more or less served as confirmation that they, indeed, were involved. On that song, she expresses concern for the age gap, writing explicitly, “Don't you think nineteen is too young?” a lyric that’s now infamous in her catalog. Now, coincidentally (or not) at the same age as Mayer when they started dating, Swift, 32, is revisiting their relationship again through more mature eyes.
Dear reader- If the title didn't already give it away, "Dear Reader" is an ode to advice columns. As such, the song is peppered with self-care tips — though these aren't your run-of-the-mill pearls of wisdom that typically dominate "agony aunt" responses. On the contrary, they're super personal to Taylor Swift.

jack what are your thoughts on the new taylor?
I have a lot of thoughts on it actually
• “Lavender Haze” is one of her best openers ever, truly a love letter to getting belligerently smacked. Fabulous production and one of many songs I feel are very covert messages to her fans in specific, like stop asking if we are married. I’m a human being and I don’t exist to be your fairy tale love story. Even if I sant about that in the last. It feels very pointed to me, which I love
• “Anti Hero” is really about her fans. Don’t you get tired of defending my every move? Shouldn’t you have moved on already at my old age? Why do you still care about me? So much of this album is really her most naked if you can really read between the lines. And the production is think is the culmination of Taylor/Jack’s various attempts at trying to jack Chvrches swag and I think they finally got it on this song
• “Midnight Rain” is, structurally and production wise so next level and ground breaking and I think it would be a huge hit for her. It feels like a really classic country ballad in her vocals and lyrics, but it sounds like a drill inspired downtempo. It’s so cool genuinely
• “Coulda Shoulda Woulda” is like the Marvel after credits scene for her setting up the public lashing John Mayer will get when she unleashes Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)
• “Karma”/“Bejeweled” is brilliant Taylor style camp. The cringe, Pinterestcore non sequiturs are like the epitome of Taylor camp, like how Lana singing about daddys and cigarettes and California is typical Lana camp. Get it?
• “Snow on the Beach” gives me such strong Enya/VH1 you oughta know artist, it’s really such a breezy listen. Lana sounds amazing on it.
• I think “Vigilante Shit” is a a very covert Billie Eilish diss track. Her response to Billie’s Taylor diss in “Therefore I Am”

Here are my thoughts on Midnights:
This is a long rant so buckle the fuck up…………. Taylor did it again! Midnights is a masterpiece. It perfectly embodies the theme of midnights. The sound, the lyrics, the melodies… it all somehow feels like something you would listen to at midnight. Midnights sounds like a sad party/glam girl anthem and I’m here for it.
This are my top 6 songs from Midnights so far (not in order tho because ranking them won’t do them justice):
-Anti-Hero: I can relate to this song so much. The lyrics are all so heartbreaking and relatable, but the upbeat sound makes me want to scream and dance to the song. The music video quickly became one of my favorites. The different versions of Taylor and the funeral scene are just so iconic. I can’t get this song out of my head!!
You’re On Your Own, Kid: This song is everything a track 5 should be. It’s so heartbreakingly beautiful, and I can definitely relate. The idea of yearning for love to realize that they never cared and that you’re on your own hit me somewhere deep inside me. This song mended my heart and broke it in 13 million pieces, and somehow, I’m okay with it.
Question…?: This song single-handedly cured my depression. When I tell you I screamed when I heard the “I remember”. This song encaptures the feeling of leaving a relationship with many questions so perfectly. Question…? has won a special place in my heart.
Bejeweled: Bejeweled is such a fucking bop. I seriously do not understand Bejeweled slander. It’s such a fun and powerful song. It sounds so shiny, so glamorous, so… bejeweled, HA! Also, the lyrics are so sassy and the melody is so much fun.
Karma: Choosing between Vigilante Shit and Karma was so difficult because both songs are perfect in their own way. But as a Karma truther, I already knew the answer. This song definitely met my expectations. The lyrics are so clever and the beat and melody are such a bop.
Mastermind: This song is the perfect way to end the album. The lyrics, beat, and melody just hit different. The bridge is one of my favorites. It’s so clever and fun. It’s the kind of song I would play in my wedding.
+top 3 bonus tacks (as of now)
Bigger Than The Whole Sky: This is definitely a song I’m gonna cry to in the near future. I can relate to grieving over what could’ve been. Also, I love the reference “what could've been, would've been, what should've been you”.
Paris: This song is for the hopeless romantics, aka me. It really embodies the need for privacy in a relationship. I love the fun beat and lyrics. The bridge is perfect, as expected.
Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve: This song brings out something feral in me. It gives me more reasons to hate John Mayer. The lyrics are so powerful. The bridge kind of reminds me of mad woman, which makes me love it even more. It’s another song I’m definitely going to be crying and screaming to.

Album Review: 'Midnights' - Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
What keeps Taylor Swift up at night?
A lot, apparently: Past lovers. Romantic nostalgia. Old enemies. Made-up scenarios where her future daughter-in-law kills her for her fortune.
Or as Taylor herself puts it: ‘[A] momentary glimmer of distraction. The tiniest notion of reminiscent thought that wanders off into wondering, the spark that lights a tinderbox of fixation. And now, it is irreversible. The flame has caught. You’re wide awake.’
Shrugging off her cardigan, Swift teams up once again with Jack Antonoff to turn her late night ruminations into yet another surprise release entitled Midnights.
It’s easy to think of her latest body of work as Taylor’s own Melodrama: indebted to slick electro-pop with a taste for vengeance while riddled with self-loathing and insecurity. But, as the title might suggest, it’s a lot more low-key than Lorde’s critically-acclaimed 2017 album, made up of languorous loops of sound and the singer’s dense storytelling. You can also detect hints of Reputation and its bitter edge.
Taylor makes a few stark confessions throughout the record. ‘I have this thing where I get older/But just never wiser,’ she admits on ‘Anti-Hero. ‘Midnights become my afternoons.’ And yes, this is the ‘sexy baby’ song. I get the point: She’s starting to feel like she’s being surpassed by younger, more provocative artists. It’s a 30 Rock reference, relax.
Taylor also says ‘so long’ to that goody two shoes ‘Daisy May’ on ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid.’ which was probably followed by the singer setting fire to her cutesy folklore cardigan (retailing at $75 at the time) in some ritualistic bonfire.
Insecurities regarding body image also bubble to the fore as Taylor searches a glitzy industry party filled with ‘better bodies,’ while realising that her dreams of stardom aren’t all that rare. The twee ‘Sweet Nothing’ features one of Taylor’s better verses (‘Industry disruptors and soul deconstructors/And smooth-talking hucksters out glad-handing each other/And the voices that implore, "You should be doing more"/To you, I can admit that I’m just too soft for all of it’).
But just as she begins to show a glimmer of self-awareness, Taylor ends up doubling down hard, every well-spun bit of wordplay surrounded by a sea of clunky, often childish lines. But she knows that they’re bad and she knows everyone’s gonna talk about them, so Taylor wins again.
Metaphors feel forced (‘Don't put me in the basement/When I want the penthouse of your heart’), while the cliches are out of control. ‘Question...?’ suffers from a serious case of Main Character Syndrome, the whole room cheering Taylor on as she makes out with the most popular boy in school. It’s a scene straight out of a Netflix original, able to envision the crane shot swirling above the two as they tenderly suck face.
Taylor also swears yet revenge yet again on ‘Vigilante Shit,’ this time with a cat’s eye ‘sharp enough to kill a man.’ She talks as if karma is her own personal pet she can just sic on her enemies at will, which is especially galling as someone who’s cultivated such a rabid fanbase, constantly weaponising them against those who supposedly cross her. Not that long ago, they went after a grown man and his sister over a red scarf that DIDN’T ACTUALLY EXIST.
Although it sounds like Taylor’s planning to kill Scooter at some point, presumably on a weekend. Remember when she revealed on ‘this is me trying’ that he had a couple of side chicks?
Even ‘Anti-Hero’ has some pretty flawed logic: You can’t complain that you’re treated like said anti-hero one minute, then act petty and vengeful the next. It’s been almost 15 years – which one are you at this point?
Naturally, Midnights also comes with its own labyrinth of easter eggs. No, I won’t be going through them all, ‘cos I really don’t give a fuck. I shouldn’t need a guidebook to tell me which song is about John Mayer and which one contains the Knives Out reference. If anything, the album only further proves that Taylor doesn’t need to commit every single thought to tape. Sometimes, it really, really isn’t that deep.
Final track ‘Mastermind’ offers the most telling glimpse into Taylor’s psyche - ‘No one wanted to play with me as a little kid/So I've been scheming like a criminal ever since/To make them love me and make it seem effortless.’ She even calls herself ‘Machiavellian’ at one point. Whether it’s in jest is kinda hard to tell, but it’s certainly a... choice.
Musically, Midnights is also a pretty mixed bag. ‘Vigilante Shit’ is a highlight, with bass throbbing its way around dark corners in a way that’s rather Billie-esque, which just makes the ‘sexy baby’ line from ‘Anti-Hero’ feel even more glaring. ‘Lavender Haze’ also utilises those subterranean bass groans, creating a murky, seductive groove beneath metallic gears shifts. ‘You’re On Your Own, Kid,’ meanwhile,’ is a more grown-up ‘Love Story’ from the point of view of a more jaded Juliet. ‘Anti-Hero,’ though, is just a lazy rehash of ‘Blank Space,’ right down to the complaints of feeling misunderstood.
‘Karma’ is a more stylish and euphoric take on Washed Out’s ‘Feel It All Around.’ ‘Snow on the Beach’ also twinkles; delicate and windswept. But for all of Swift’s excitement to be collaborating with Lana Del Rey, the singer is relegated to backing vocalist. ‘Cos, let’s face it, Taylor would never let herself be upstaged like that.
And yes, there’s a 3am edition of Midnights, ‘cos Taylor’s gonna milk those late night ruminations for all they’re worth, dammit.
‘The Great War’ is okay, but not that great. Honour, truth, treaties, poppies, calling off the troops, we get it. ‘Bigger Than the Whole Sky’ has a hypnotic country twang, returning to the lush, cloudy nostalgia of folklore and evermore. ‘Would’ve Could’ve, Should’ve’ is a stormy, Fleetwood Mac-esque riposte at Mayer (found it), reflecting on the power imbalance in their romance while pleading: ‘Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first.’
Midnights is a well-produced but rather unnecessary record. Even with its slick, shimmery wash, it’s everything you’ve heard before in some form or another: A song about John, a song about Tom, a song about Calvin. ‘Yes, I know I can be quite a divisive character, but I’m really just like you!’ Revenge. A couple of love songs dedicated to Joe. Probably something about Kanye and Kim. More revenge. Oh, and here’s a dossier full of clues for you to connect together like Charlie Kelly trying to track down the elusive Pepe Silvia. Boom, critical acclaim!
As cynical as I felt about folklore and evermore, at least those records possessed some growth and a few interesting ideas. But as those albums were to indie folk, Midnights feels late to the party when it comes to brooding noir pop, the kind that’s already been perfected by other artists in every way imaginable. It’s really just a CHVRCHES or Purity Ring record in a quirky jumper.
But what do I know? The record’s already gone to No.1. Buying presale tickets for her US tour turned into a bloodbath. Taylor could release a full hour of silence, and stans will hail it as an artistic statement and critics will write one in-depth analysis after another. And Stereogum will probably write the most positive negative review of it ever. Taylor’s no longer capturing the zeitgeist at this point, she is the goddamn zeitgeist.

making lists to calm racing thoughts.
things I want to do:
finish two applications - one requiring a cover letter and another requiring something portfolio-esque - probably in the morning before breakfast or post dinner tomorrow
figure out what I want to and can do wrt a job/career change by exploring available options I know of - Saturday?
nap or calm anxious mind - now
make a secret playlist - next week
things I should do:
put postcards in mailbox - tomorrow
go to work tomorrow and do what I can to complete stuff for the day - tomorrow
find and use a new bag - tomorrow morning
things I can do:
draw - during lunch break
try playing gravity on the ukulele - now
play somehow I manage - now
make more plans with friends and leave shell for a bit, also respond to Bumble texts - sunday
get organised wrt computer files / phone stuff - next weekend
make more to do lists or use planner to figure out how to do what I want to do - whenever I need
get an appointment - next week
attend an interview call thing for a course - Saturday
feelings to acknowledge at this point:
restlessness, worry, anxiety because I got a work text about something I missed which I resolved immediately, and how having unpleasant experiences at work immediately make me think of finding new work or progressing, which I’m terrible at (re this: I read an article today which said MOOCs have a completion rate of 7%, which puts me in the 93%, which means MOOCs are probably not effective for every learner; also alternative responses are: (a) considering how I can make the situation better or whether it’ll feel bad tomorrow or next week (b) being grateful that I could immediately resolve it)
lukewarm text I got which was kind of disappointing but also I was avoidant too in the previous text but still disappointed because it’s indicative of distance and loss
inertia of anxiety from the general home/work/holding myself together/going deep in therapy pressures this week
things to be grateful for today:

Prompt: 28, 10 and Lashton
You said lashton in an art gallery.  I said Off-Screen circa 2017 (aka Luke’s Utah Era).  this might feel a little out of context, because it is. the theoretical prequel that I'm writing would explain more of the surrounding circumstance, but the most important thing to note is that Luke moved in with Ashton in Utah after the end of the SLFL tour.  This takes place in January of 2017.
lashton: “Where are all of my hoodies? Did you borrow literally every single one of my hoodies?” + art gallery
The last guest has left when Luke arrives, the gallery technically beginning to close for the night.  Ashton is tired, all of the frantic energy from the past few months building up to this evening of schmoozing and revealing the deepest parts of his soul to be judged by the art community, and he feels empty now that it has passed.  There’s a glass of some sort of fancy alcohol in his hand, but he hasn’t had the chance to drink it all night, and his suit feels like it doesn’t fit his shoulders correctly.  It’s been bothering him, but he’s been too focused on smiling genially and making nice with every single person who passed through the doors to look at his art to do anything about it.
The sound of the main doors opening is loud in the quiet of the space, and Ashton tenses where he’s talking to the owner of the gallery.  He relaxes once he sees that it’s not another art snob or a random person who got lost, but Luke.  He stands at the threshold awkwardly, fiddling with the hem of one of Ashton’s college hoodies, beanie stuffed unceremoniously over his hair.  It’s getting longer, and he’s been letting it curl more instead of spending hours styling it and trying to get it to sit right.
He looks just as breathtaking as ever, and Ashton is almost overwhelmed with how lucky he feels to be one of the only people to see famous rockstar Luke Hemmings with his guard completely down.
“Luke,” he sighs, relief too obvious.  Luke just smiles and wanders, stopping short when something in a painting catches his eye.
“Friend of yours?” the gallery owner asks, and Ashton turns his attention back to her.  It’s too easy to forget that anyone else exists the moment Luke enters a room.  Ashton needs to get a grip.
“Yeah, that’s my housemate.  Do you mind if we look around for a bit?  He couldn’t make the normal gallery times.”
He logistically could have, because Luke doesn’t have responsibilities here in Utah, but Ashton knows that the idea of him having to look nice, be in a crowd of people, and possibly be recognized almost sent him into a panic attack.
“Sure.  I’m locking up by 10, though, so be out before then.”
Ashton thanks her profusely, and the look she gives him is a bit too knowing for his taste.  Still, she heads towards the back with an artistic grace, and Ashton joins Luke where he’s staring at one of Ashton’s paintings.
“Hi,” he says quietly.  Luke leans into him in a practiced move, shoulders brushing together.  Luke has always been familiar and comfortable, despite how little they see each other.
Ashton knows he should feel bad that Luke felt so lost in LA that he had to come all the way to Utah and Ashton to try and find himself, but selfishly he’s glad.  For a few months, he gets Luke to himself, curled up on his couch and eating at his kitchen island instead of off traveling the world and meeting adoring fans.  Besides, having Luke here helps.  Ashton can’t take care of another person if he’s drunk every night, and meals are easier to prepare when there are two people to eat them.  It’s easier to fall asleep if someone else is breathing slowly next to him.  It’s easier to keep the loneliness at bay with Luke stepping into the gaps in his life.
“Was it a good showing?” Luke asks.
“It was,” he replies, resisting the urge to do something inappropriate like pull Luke closer and tuck his face into his neck just to breathe him in.  “I even sold a few paintings.”
“You did?” Luke lights up.  “Ashton, that’s amazing!  Which ones?  Wait, I want to see them all anyway.  Walk me through them as we go.”
Ashton does, trying his best to remember the thought process and inspiration behind each of the paintings hanging in the gallery.  For the earlier works it’s easier, because objects inside are more defined and they have clearer stories.  For recent creations featuring bold strokes and swirls of color and more ambiguous shapes, the inspirations shift towards ideas.  Some of them he created while drunk, and he has to check the title cards to figure out what he was going for, because while drunk Ashton isn’t good for much, he at least always writes titles in his notes app when he paints.
His professors made him include some of those works, saying that a few are profound and mesmerizing and probably your best work.  It makes Ashton feel like he can’t create anything if he doesn’t have a few drinks in him.  It’s a mindset he’s trying to move away from, but it’s hard.  At least he has endless inspiration with Luke in the house.
Luke looks at a piece entitled Longing for a few minutes, and Ashton prays that he doesn’t ask who or what he was longing for while painting it.
“Come on,” he says when the swirl of blues and purples (with just that shimmer of gold to represent the person of desire, possibly forming a hazy constellation of Luke to anyone who knows what to look for) becomes too much.  “I want to show you the synesthesia section.”
“Section” is a generous term, because it’s actually just four paintings on the same wall.  He has many more paintings for various songs and albums back home, most of them on smaller canvases he can get from the craft store, but there are a few songs that evoke such strong, beautiful visuals that he had to paint them properly.
The first painting has a primarily blue background, mixing with black in short strokes by the edges.  Traveling diagonally across the canvas are an assortment of other colors, mostly yellows and reds until they meet strokes of white in the middle.  The paint is thick, creating textured mountains where the colors meet, and that’s Ashton’s favorite part about painting, really.  He’s not very good at 3D forms, but paint never lays completely flat.  He likes how dynamic it is because of it.
“Gravity,” Luke croons as he looks, “is working against me.”
Ashton loves hearing him sing.  He was worried for those first few weeks Luke came to him, because he rarely heard it, but now he can count on random melodies filling the house at all hours.
“John Mayer makes nice songs to look at,” he says.  Luke smiles at him, then they move on to the next one.
This painting has a bit more variety in color.  Ashton remembers mixing them on his pallet, unbothered by the streaks it caused in the brush strokes, knowing that it was necessary to capture what the song makes him see.  A dark background gives way to a curve of reds, purples, pinks, blues, ending in some greens and yellows and a hint of orange.  He splattered white and black on afterwards, just a little bit near the middle of the curve, and Luke leans forward to see all the small dots.
“This one really does look like ‘Karma Police,’” Luke says.  “Even I can see it.”  He straightens and gives Ashton another grin, and he knows that he can’t capture that smile in a painting (he’s tried, so many times), but he still wants to attempt it again.
“I can’t believe how talented you are,” Luke says.  “It’s almost unfair.”
“Thanks,” he says, ducking his head.  Luke nudges him with his elbow and moves on to the next painting.  This one follows a similar pattern to the other two, a dark background with color in the middle, but it’s messier.  Blue and purple feature the most, but there are hints of orange and yellow, and white overtakes the painting in peaked chunks and thin streaks.
“You’d think that for a Prince song, there’d be a bit more purple,” Luke says, tilting his head.
“Maybe he should have written more purple songs, then,” Ashton shrugs.  “‘Joy in Repetition’ has more blue.”
“Wait, is “Purple Rain” even purple?” Luke asks, alarmed.
“Yes, that one fits the title.”  Luke looks reassured at that, and they continue to the last painting.  Ashton feels nerves clench in his stomach.
He didn’t submit any of his photographs or colored pencil sketches of Luke, not even the really good one of Luke sleeping in his bed with an arm over his face that Ashton drew one night when the insomnia was hitting him hard, but this painting could be just as damning.  It’s different from the other three because it’s slightly bigger and oriented differently, vertical instead of horizontal.  The background is also based in white instead of black, primarily creating a pale blue to match the cautious optimism of the song.  More blue meets with seafoam green, peach, and white in the middle, dripping down the canvas until all the colors fade into just the green.  The lines of this one are smoother, blended together evenly, but there are bursts of gold in the middle and near a few edges that he bought a specific brand of metallic paint for.  Ashton watches as Luke’s eyes trace the painting before he turns to the name card.
“Luke?” he asks when a few moments have gone by with him completely frozen.
“Really?” Luke asks, voice cracking.  “This is what you see?”
“Yeah,” Ashton says.  He knew he was going to end up painting the song as soon as he first heard Luke’s voice singing about tasting the ocean.  “It’s mostly “Outer Space,” but I incorporated some of what I saw for “Carry On” at the bottom.”
“Oh,” Luke says, then turns and tucks himself into a hug, squeezing Ashton tight enough that he feels short of breath.  Ashton wraps his arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer and letting Luke cuddle into him in a way that he’s almost getting too big for.
“I take it you like it?” he asks, just to be sure.  Luke nods, and when he does finally pull away he swipes at his eyes with the sleeve of Ashton’s sweatshirt.
“Can I buy it?” he asks.
“Luke, you can have it for free.”  Luke shakes his head vigorously.
“No, you’ve already given me too much.  I want to buy it from you.  You should be paid for your art.”
“Okay,” Ashton says quietly.  Luke’s eyes are still fixed on the painting, and Ashton comes back to slide a hand around his waist again.  “We can negotiate a price later.”  He presses a kiss to Luke’s temple, because that’s something he can get away with still.
“Don’t try to give me a discount.  I’ve already stolen your food and half your clothes.”
“Speaking of,” Ashon says, “I’m absolutely positive that this hoodie was the last one in my closet.  Where are all my hoodies?  Did you borrow literally every single one of my hoodies?”
“Yeah,” Luke says sheepishly.  “They’re comfortable.  They smell like you.”
Luke is going to kill him like this.  Ashton can’t even be upset, because what a way to go, but things like that are not helping him keep a lid on how absolutely head-over-heels he is.
“I’d be more upset if you didn’t look so good in them,” Ashton says before he can stop himself.  Luke’s breathing stutters, but he doesn’t do anything besides lean a little closer.  Ashton’s heart feels like it’s going to beat out of his chest.
“Come on,” Luke says.  “I still want to see the rest of your pieces, then we can go home.”
Home, Ashton repeats to himself.  Luke thinks of your house as his home.
They wander their way through the last few canvases, then stop briefly in the photograph and colored pencil room before stepping out onto the street.  Their hands brush as they walk, and Ashton wonders if he can get away with grabbing Luke’s.  This night feels significant in so many ways.  Something has shifted, and he’s not sure if it has to do with his art career or the man beside him.  He wants it to be both so badly he aches with it.
When they have two more blocks to go before reaching the house, Luke reaches over and threads their fingers together.
A/N: I don’t have synesthesia, but the first three song paintings really exist and can be found here. the one for os/co was made up by me.
