HI doing my kyle readthrough (up to oyl) rn and i must know what are some of your fav issues/arcs 🙏 and if there's anything u think i should just skip. if ur feeling hateful enough
HI i appreciate this ask a lot i don't know if i count as any paragon of kyle expertise but... well. that's never stopped me.
if you're up to oyl you're pretty far along, and i assume you'd seen a handful of reading guides that nudge you towards all of gl (1990) #48-181 and its surrounding crossovers, including zero hour (1994) and final night/parallax: emerald night (1996). i derive most of my takes on his character from this era.
green lantern rebirth and gl publications thereon are often (in)famously authored by mr. geoff johns, so i cannot in good conscience integrate most of that body of work into my belief system. that being said! it does include the buildup to ion (2006) #1-12, which, while not perfect, has phenomenal art and is also pretty key to kyle's whole ethos. the buildup to ion is the following:
green lantern: rebirth (2004)
green lantern corps: recharge (2005)
rann/thanagar war: infinite crisis special (2006)
ion (2006)
if you're not allergic to ensemble comics, he is also a frequent cast member in jla (1997) for the first 70 or so issues; it's a good place to look to see him foster relationships with other members of the dc universe (like wally, whose friendship with kyle is basically nonexistent nowadays but i have not forgotten) and gradually gain confidence as gl. some highlights include:
jla (1997) #1-7 — he's such a rookie here. he's clearly very new to the game and nervous about it, so it's a good look into how he started off and what he grew from.
jla/titans (1998) #1-3
jla (1997) #16-17
jla (1997) #32-46 — tie-ins to no-man's land, hal's return as the spectre in #35, and the world war iii/tower of babel storylines.
green lantern: circle of fire (2000) — starts about here, in terms of publication timeline, but portrays a version of kyle that is still relatively new to the jla. the kylealex worms are here.
jla (1997) 47-68, #70, #72-75
jla (1997) #76 — kyle's final issue in the JLA's main rotation, as a tie-in for the later events in gl (1990). john steps in for him.
as for standalones, personal recommendations, or just random appearances i happen to remember:
green lantern/flash: faster friends (1996) #1-2 — (to an empty auditorium) WALLY AND KYLE WOO! WOO!
total justice (1996) #1-3 — more budding hero kyle. wally is a hater. tim is also there.
dc universe holiday bash (1996) #1 — kyle goes to synagogue and beats white supremacists :)
dc universe holiday bash I (1997) #1 — connor and kyle go holiday shopping. very cute also.
adventures in the dc universe (1997) #11 — kyle and wonder woman hang out! he also gets bullied by children and falls into a sewer.
superman (1986) #159, #165, #170
batman chronicles (1995) #15 — be fucking nice bruce
green lantern 3D (1998) — standalone. jen and kyle being cute.
green lantern secret files and origins (1998) #1-3
green lantern 80-page giant (1998)
flash 80-page giant (1998) — kyle appears for two pages but it's of wally asking him about alex because he's worried about his own relationship. kyle gets very sad and visibly withdrawn to the point that wally apologizes. VERY FUNNY.
(final note: THANKS! i am so flattered. was it because of the kyle slayner shooba wooba cherry pie brownie cake post. i rambled on for way longer than i thought i would. i hope this is helpful, and happy reading!)

day 6: lesser known creators and creations- the hidden gems of fandom
Belated for @roswellnewmexicocreate [last few days have been challenging!]
New creators are the lifeblood of fandom, because not everyone stays in fandom or stays inspired to write for it. While there are times I just want to re-read a classic, there really is something fun about clicking on a new name to see what they think of our beloved alien show.
We have very long hiatuses, and sometimes people pull away until the show comes back, so I thought I would also highlight some lessor known creations as well from our last hiatus. As we are blessed in the malex side of fandom, there’s a small but mighty group of fans and creators, churning out new works every day, so maybe you might have missed these works.
***
calamitous by @bubblesyoh (3,962) - Two times they apologize to each other and three times they are so in love they can't even fool one another.
why i like it: most of us know bubblesyoh as being a supportive friend, reblogging and commenting so prolifically- but they are also an author! Malex have without a doubt hurt one another in canon, and there is an art to writing a good apology fic and this story does it well.
***
kill me tonight, darling by u1ltsa (4.867)-Alex and Michael have a memorable first meeting at a party. They keep running into each other and can't seem to get enough of one another.
why i like it: It’s a human AU where over the course of months, these two keep running into each other. Michael is so smitten in this story and can’t help chasing Alex and how Alex makes him feel. It’s sexy and kinky and ends happily ever after. My favorite meeting is still the bar scene that ends up at a hotel- wow.
***
next time will be the last time by kit alridge (1,715) "It's not how it's going to happen, next time. Because next time will be the last time we do the falling-back-together thing." After a close shave, Alex and Michael come close to falling back into old patterns, but have a much-needed conversation instead.
why i like it: I’m so weak for the “we survived let’s fuck to celebrate” trope, and this story explores what it means for Malex to fall into it, and how closely it mirrors some of their past, unhealthy behaviors. Anyway this hits all the notes that I pray we get in the second half of season 3, where these two finally talk and admit what they want.
***
tell me what you’ll do, please by @entropychanges (3,054) So, Michael, dripping like a wet mop on the restaurant’s tile floor, stood silently as he looked between the sister of the girl whose murder he covered up only two months ago, and his lover who would rather be sent off to war than be with him. Great. He swallowed, figuring he may as well break the silence.“Sorry, I wasn’t sure if-”“The kitchen is closed,” Liz interrupted, looking him up and down before saying, “but you can stay until the storm lets up.” Or, in which Michael gets caught out in the rain while sleeping in his truck, and ends up taking shelter in the last place he wants to be.
why i like it: Sometimes I like to cry about Michael, especially Michael at 17-18, after the shed. This story serves up all the angst of what his life looked like then, along with the grief that Liz was living in and the grim determination that Alex had about his own fate. They were all such babies and they were in such pain, and ugh that breaks my heart.
***
I’ll take care of you by @cosmiceverafter (2,055)  When Alex stops by Michael's airstream to confess how he's feeling, he ends up taking care of the alien he loves so much instead.
why i like it: classic hurt-comfort here, which I always eat up with a spoon. Highlights for me in this story was Michael was hurt working on a project from a natural disaster, and not anything self-inflicted, and then Alex finding that iconic picture of the two of them in the desert with guitars. Ooof so many feels!
***
look after you by @ravens-words  Everyone checks in on Kyle. 3x04 Coda
why i like it: well before we had it in 3x06, EJ delivered the whole found-family feels of everyone coming together to make sure Kyle is okay. As they should. Kyle holds the only brain cell. EJ has been a coda-writing machine since returning to RNM with the show, so definitely check out the whole collection for season 3, and not just the chapter I linked to because they are all so good.
***
honey, i’m going to love you all my life by wwwjudedotcom (3,729) Alex leaves Michael a voicemail after he loses his leg because he doesn't want to die without telling Michael that he loves him.
why i like it: this part of a great little series of fics surrounding prompts about ‘ways to say i love you’ - I’ve probably imagined Alex’s life post-injury in Iraq a million times, I so badly want to know if he dared to call Michael, did he call out for him in his morphine daze, is that how Greg knew about Michael? And I’m unsure if the show will ever answer this question, so it’s up to fanfic writers. Anyway, I love this little AU that lets Maria know just how important Michael is to Alex right from the start and where Isobel sends them to be with Alex in Germany. Ugh what a sweet thought (probably too sweet for the angst machine that is RNM).

Things that Spark Joy-3x09
A week late due to being busy, having unexpected company, and having a brain that’s bad, but here is all the good stuff we got for 3x09! As always, the (very, very salty) vibes are here.
LUCKY! Far to brief, but glad the pupper is still around. Someone take him away from Jones though. I’m sure Michael and Alex could use a family pet.
Speaking of Jones, we didn’t get much of him this episode, but I loved seeing him and Nora facing off after she destroyed his clones, and watching him continue to just steal Max’s clothes and go to his job. Still hoping he isn’t killed off but escapes to be a thorn in their side in later seasons leading to a team up at some point when the find a bigger, badder, bad guy. Also, he’s such a dramatic bench and I love him. “Round here, they call me Jones” yaaaaas. Never leave us.
Echo seems a little more back on track, and had some really cute flirting and soft moments this episode. This season has really been lacking on the Echo (and Liz) front so it was nice to see them working together, Liz being her sassy, joking, casual B&E-er self while Max nervously follows her lead. I know him saving her tapes and not telling her was not a great move, but it’s a TV show so him memorizing her tapes because he listened to them so often to hear her voice is some of that good soulmate shit and I’m glad he told Liz about it, finally AND it ended up being a clue as well so it served a purpose! I also loved him saying he wants to choose WITH her, where they go next because that’s always been part of their problem. Their lack of communication is different, but pretty on part with Malex so it’s nice to see they may be moving forward from that by discussing the hard things between them.
Liz and Michael being science bros! I love getting to see them work together and hopefully we will see more of that in the coming episodes. I also love Isobel being there to put everything in the absolute worst way and highlight just how ridiculous things are. It adds a nice bit of levity and sister-in-law type teasing, and it’s nice to see her and Liz’s relationship growing to that point where things are teasing instead of vicious or biting.
Speaking of Isobel, she looked super adorable all episode, and I love how she may not be science-brained like Liz, Michael, Alex, and Kyle, but she knows she can still help and isn’t above doing a lot of leg work so everyone else can focus on the science aspects of trying to defeat Jones.
I will talk about my issues with her new love interest in my salt post, but Isobel being nervous is new and cute and an Lily played it really well.
Isobel is also the cockblock extraordinaire of the group and I love that for her. (If only she could have kept blocking this episode and spared all of us, but oop! that’s for another post.)
It looks like Heath might be at least a little interesting! I thought he might be evil and was going to be disappointed if he wasn’t, but actually I kinda like this turn of him trying to save a friend and I’m excited to see where it goes! And I always wanted Father Dallas to be let in on the secret so Rosa could have someone to actually talk to, so him being an alien is working out great for that agenda! I’m very curious about why his pod ended up so far away from everyone else’s and I hope we get to hear more of his story soon! Also, if Dallas and Heath aren’t Lovers In the Night Time, then what is even the point? (Sidebar, I curse everything for the fact a gif of Shawn from Psych using this phrase to tell Lassie about the gay bartenders does not exist or even a clip that I could find to make my own. This meme has been in my brain for dayyyys with no way to make it!)
Kyle. Just...everything with Kyle and Eduardo this episode was so good. Kyle wanting to keep helping the aliens because he wants to not because he feels obligated or like he’s just there to fix Jim’s wrongs 😭😭😭 NO ONE is doing it like Kyle and I’m so excited to see where his story arc goes. And Eduardo is looking more and more like he’s not going to be evil and I’m really hoping that’s the case because both Kyle and Alex could use a father-figure like him.
Also, we got Kyle with the slutty open shirt, so I’ll take the wins where I can get them!
OKAY!! It’s finally time for the Malex of it all! We all been knew they would be the SOFTEST domestic boyfriends and man do Tyler and Vlamis continue to deliver! Every single thing about their interactions was great, from the soft moments, to the gentle teasing, to Worried Boyfriend Michael, all of it was sooooo good! Tyler delivered a stellar performance with Alex slowly losing his grip, and having Nora back as the manifestation of all his awful thoughts was interesting because he’s spent a lifetime learning to shut out his dad’s voice so having Jesse be his vision might have hit harder at first, but I think he could have stepped away easier. But by having it be Nora, and having Alex desperate not to let her or Michael down again, and not to see her as the bad guy, it allowed those insidious thoughts to take more root than they would have otherwise I think. I could absolutely have done with more episodes of that arc because it was amazing to watch. I loved everything but especially Michael going to Alex’s house and checking up on him but making sure he’s respecting boundaries which is so indicative of their growth and how they’re really trying not to fall into bad habits again and work on smoothing out the rocky path as much as possible.

Round Table Discussion with the Cover Illustrators
Entr’acte of Evil, page 142-145
--First, everyone please introduce yourselves.
Ichika: I’ve been responsible for the first cover and the illustrations for the series. My name is Ichika.
Suzunosuke: I am Suzunosuke. I normally just draw what I want to. I was able to make the cover for the second book.
You: I am You, and I was charged with the cover for this book. I’m really nervous, but I look forward to being able to do this interview with you.
--When did you all first start making illustrations?
Ichika: Since I could first remember. I don’t recall it all that clearly, but by the time I was in first year I was already drawing.
Suzunosuke: I think it was about middleschool. Apparently when I was a kid my parents were consulted by my teachers on the fact that I couldn’t actually draw pictures.
--You couldn’t draw pictures?
Suzunosuke: Even when I was made to stay behind by myself in kindergarten, the only things I drew were like little pictures of flowers on my drawing paper. It wasn’t that I was sick or anything like that, I was just a normal kid who couldn’t draw.
--I see, that’s very unexpected. What about you, You-san?
You: I don’t clearly remember when I first started drawing as a hobby, but my first picture was when I was three years old, and was a portrait of my caregiver in nursery. Back then I always wanted to use every color of crayon I had, and I guess the fact that I’m still always using rainbow colors even now just goes to show that what you learn in the cradle you carry to the grave.
Suzunosuke: I think that’s cool.
--Incidentally, when did you start making pictures related to VOCALOID?
Ichika: I think around 2007…maybe? I remember the first time I drew Miku was after listening to Yuuyu-P’s “White Season”.
Suzunosuke: I don’t remember how many years ago it was, but I feel like the first thing I drew was Kurousa-P’s “Cantarella”.
You: I listened to VOCALOID the first time in the winter of 2007, so I think it was probably around that time.
--So then, when was the first time you encountered AkunoP’s work?
Ichika: It was right after “Daughter of Evil” was posted on Piapro. I had just finished up making a PV, and when I was looking for new content on Piapro I got drawn in by the title and started listening to it.
Suzunosuke: The “Servant of Evil” was on NicoNico Douga’s rankings, and when I opened up the PV it had a tag saying to watch it after “Daughter of Evil”, so I watched them in order of “Daughter of Evil” and “Servant of Evil” for the first time.
You: Like Suzunosuke-san, probably in the autumn of 2008. The “Daughter of Evil” had a lot of buzz when it was first uploaded! I saw it in so many places with Ichika-san’s illustrations~ It feels so strange to see it having taken this form so many years later.
--Suzunosuke-san and You-san, this was the first time you’d seen a song that used Ichika-san’s illustrations, wasn’t it?
Ichika: I’m sorry for being alive…
Suzunosuke: Sorry, haha
You: Hey, hahaha
Ichika: I’m honestly really shaking here, haha
Suzunosuke: Maybe we should reply with “You’re a very wonderful person” ha ha.
-(Laughs) So what was everyone’s thoughts on the work when they saw “Daughter of Evil” and “Servant of Evil”?
Ichika: I think the imagery in it was really easy to get emotional about. I also thought it was a really interesting concept that although “Daughter of Evil” and “Servant of Evil” had a really different feel to them, they still felt like part of the same story.
Suzunosuke: All else aside I thought it was really sad, and I kept getting stuck on the fact that Allen couldn’t be saved. Still, it was because it was such a sad story that I was captivated by it. It also really made me feel the potential of the VOCALOID genre. It’s a derivative work, but also original content.
You: At the time I had thought it was really interesting and unusual to make a work with such dark fantasy elements using VOCALOID. I also really liked how catchy the tune was. It was also really impressive with all the derivative songs and fanart that got uploaded as things went on. I think it’s a work that shouldered a main pillar of the VOCALOID community in its heyday. And it’s really cool that it’s continuing to spread around the world even now.
--What image do you get of its creator, AkunoP?
Suzunosuke: Given he’s got “Akuno” (of evil) in his name, I thought he might be a scary person.
Ichika: Generally the people who do DTM have a kind of science-y image, so there’s that. And when we actually met, I remember he was a lot like that image. Though he was a bit thinner than I had imagined. Maybe if Akuno-san had shown up to our first meeting with his sunglasses look I’d answer that his image was different, haha.
You: Before I met him offline…He made a lot of romantic-type works, so I actually wondered if maybe he was a woman. When we actually met, it was apparently right after he’d changed his look, so I was a little amused to see him wearing a leather jacket and sunglasses.
--Have you all met AkunoP-san wearing sunglasses?
Suzunosuke: I actually just brushed him off because I didn’t know who he was for a second. As a fan the way he is now is probably close to his image as AkunoP, I would think.
Ichika: I also brushed him off.
You: Everybody brushed him off!
--Well that was an unexpected outcome, haha. Next, do you have a favorite AkunoP work?
Ichika: I actually really like “Clockwork Lullaby”. I prefer the quietly compelling melody and lyrics. Aside from that, I remember when I listened to “Daughter of Evil” I was really drawn to it, wondering what other kind of work he’d done, so that left a significant impression.
Suzunosuke: I think that might be “Re_Birthday”. The flow of sin and rebirth is so painfully beautiful, and I always get misty-eyed no matter how many times I listen to it.
You: Like Suzunosuke-san, I like “Re_Birthday”. I really love the music, and as for the story of it I think it’s really great it has that theme of salvation.
--I see. I had thought that Suzunosuke-san might say “Lunacy of Duke Venomania”, so that was surprising.
Suzunosuke: I could also say “Lunacy of Duke Venomania”, but I don’t want people to think I’m someone who likes erotic content, haha. But that’s also another song that I really like.
.
About the Novel Illustrations
.
--How did you feel when you heard about the “Daughter of Evil” becoming a novel?
Ichika: I was simply surprised.
Suzunosuke: I thought it was awesome.
You: I thought it was awesome for Akuno-san. I thought there must have been so many fan’s voices there, and that kind of invisible strength was deeply moving.
--Ichika-san, in the first book you did the cover illustration as well as the ones in the book itself—What was something that was hard about that?
Ichika: I’d have to say highlights.
--Highlights…! Certainly you had to do quite the interaction there… Honestly, was there any point where you were like, “I hope these editors step in dog crap”? haha
Ichika: Nah, ‘cause ever since I’ve become able to put in highlights more seriously, so I’d say it was good practice, haha.
--Suzunosuke-san, you were asked to do the cover for the second book; how was it when they approached you for that?
Suzunosuke: I had thought for sure that they were going to have me just do a pinup on the inside of the book, so then I was kind of like, “Now what?” The others who’ve been involved in it are such amazing illustrators, so I wondered if I’d be good enough for it.
--Was there anything you had trouble with?
Suzunosuke: Drawing the two of them to be just adorable was a little hard.
--I understand you had a bit of revision going on…?
Suzunosuke: Oh no, I saw that as being good training in a lot of ways, so even now it’s a good memory for me.
--You-san, you’ve been asked to do a lot of color illustrations each time, and in this guidebook you were entrusted with the cover illustration. How did you feel after finishing your work?
You: I really like doing the pinups, and I’ll generally paint them as I like, but I dealt with the cover with some different feelings in mind. As a fan I thought that Ichika-san would be given preference for sure. And I’ve refined on my composition a bit looking over past work. I wanted to emulate the flow of things up to now, so like Suzunosuke-san’s work I made it very horizontal.
--Who are some characters that were fun for you to draw in this novel series?
Ichika: All the characters are fun to draw, but if you’re gonna make me choose I’d say Elluka…I had this sense of security while drawing her, like it wasn’t an issue if I made her look a little bit like a villain.
Suzunosuke: I’ve only drawn two characters, so that would be the harmonius Clarith and Michaela. That pair so really cute, so I like them a lot.
--Suzunosuke-san, are there any characters that you would like to draw?
Suzunosuke: I love old man figures, so I’m a bit intrigued by Leonhart. Though I know that’s probably not what you were looking for, haha.
Ichika: (after half a second) It is!
Suzunosuke: Yay, haha
--You-san, you’ve probably drawn all of the main characters at this point; are there any that you’re fond of?
You: Everyone’s fun with how cute they are. I think Riliane-chan is really precious with how her hair is done up. And then there’s the princely Kyle-san—for some reason I’m always grinning when I draw him.
--Please tell us the impressions you were left with as the story has developed.
Ichika: I wasn’t expecting the romantic love between Michaela and Clarith, so that surprised me a bit.
Suzunosuke: I was actually really surprised that the base for Michaela and Gumillia’s appearances were those characters in those other songs.
You: I was also surprised at Michaela and Clarith. I felt the books complemented the content that wasn’t expanded on in the songs, which made them have a lot of interesting points. I think it’s also pretty great that I can now listen to the songs with a fresh perspective.
--Conclusively, how do you think the story will develop in the third book?
Ichika: I think Kyle’s mom is gonna be the final boss.
Suzunosuke: Hmm, I think all of the countries might get wrapped up in the fires of war. All the preliminary announcements have a pretty foreboding feeling to them.
You: All will go according to the will of god (AkunoP).
--Please let us know any final thoughts you have.
Ichika: Thanks for having me here. I don’t know yet how the third book is going to go, but I look forward to being able to go through the novels again with you.
Suzunosuke: I’d be really happy if I could be with you on the sidelines. This interview has been great!
You: I’m really happy to be linked to this series and involved in the work in this way. Thank you very much!
--Thank you very much for joining us everyone!

top 10 favorite reads of 2021
is this entire post completely self-indulgent? yes; there literally is no other reason for it to exist except for my own enjoyment. with this in mind, it still would be cool to share to whoever decides to read this, mutuals and the book community alike, the stories that have impacted me this year. as well as providing some perfect book recs, so!! yeah!!
i read 117 books in 2021, marking it as a really good reading year for me, possibly even more memorable than last year because i actively went into this year knowing the books i would want to read.
there were a lot of five-stars i gave so it might not seem fair to try and wrestle them into the top 10, but i personally like doing this challenge because it makes me look back on everything i read and remember the significant experiences i had with certain books. so going in, know just how special these books mean to me since i specifically chose to share them on this list.
i would like to formally thank past-me for highlighting/tabbing my favorite quotes/passages in these selected books. it made my attempt at finding the perfect quote to sum up the books much easier.
honorable mentions:
these are books that in my review of all the stories i’ve read this year didn’t quite make the cut, one way or another. however, it just tells you how important they are to me that i squeezed them into this list in some shape or form. while i won’t be sharing a quote to sum up each of them as i did with the ten books that’ll be shared soon, i decided to rant a little about these honorable mentions to give them a little of their own respective spotlights.
so ahem, here we go.
- winter counts by david heska wanbli weiden
this was a crime thriller i discovered in 2020 and finally got to read in 2021, introducing me to one of my most favorite fictional characters that i’ve met this year, virgil wounded horse.
being that i read this in january and have read over 100 books since then, virgil’s voice was that memorable to me that i had to include this book in this list somehow.
- the skybound saga by alex london
kylee & brysen were absolutely phenomenal in their roles in this series, kylee the aroace rep that the aroace community truly deserve. her relationship with her twin brother brysen was one of the most sígnicant dynamics in this series to me, especially when seeing how they develop in contrast in the second book, red skies falling. other characters such as jowyn & ryven completely stole my attention at some points in this series, so it was cool seeing how they fit into the story in their own ways.
i specifically focused on standalones for this list of my favorite reads, but because of how much i ranted about this series on twitter, i couldn’t not include it.
- the heart principle (the kiss quotient, #3) by helen hoang
this was one of the first books i read in august, and also perhaps the most impactful during that month next to the title listed below.
while this story is in dual pov, anna’s was the most fleshed out and as unbalanced as that felt, her journey through this book was as harrowing as it was captivating. seeing through it all the way to the end felt like walking through a dark tunnel, but there was some light to find, just as bright as the stunning hot pink cover.
because of this, it didn’t feel right to keep this book out the list knowing how much i care for anna’s character, as well as quan. despite the fact that i feel i didn’t benefit enough from his pov, he still was a charming character to me, and his growing relationship with anna made this romance one to steal my own heart.
- timekeeper trilogy by tara sim
…let me just say this. i screamed about this series so much that i convinced a friend to want to read it. the series itself was sold to me as a perfect comfort albeit predictable young adult fantasy and that sounded pretty good to me…except the person who said this had only read the first book. when i moved onto the second book, and then read the finale?
it is not comforting or predictable at all. it’s actually pretty sad, fair warning.
this series absolutely blew me away, and not just in the way the author was crafting her own history in Victorian England, but in all the characters who are introduced. zavier, in particular, is my most favorite out of the bunch, and i’ll forever keep his memory in my heart as he deserved so much better.
a lot of these characters deserved better, and as dark as their shared history gets, there is still a lot of wonder that was discovered in the first book. i’ll always appreciate the author for tapping into that magic with the mythos she weaves into the story, and for that i’ll read anything she writes in the future.
- dark rise (dark rise, #1) by c.s. pacat
i had a good time with this story, slow pacing and all. the world this author was building, as well as the legacies that follow all the characters, was so well-crafted i was immersed in all their journeys knowing it was only just the beginning. i did not anticipate this book being on my favorite reads of the year list, and yet….and yet, i read the last quarter of the book...and it was the most shocking read of my entire year.
it was the build-up for me, it was the fact that as soon as the story started, the author was building up to this last quarter. and once the reader reaches that point, everything that came before just suddenly sharpens into focus. the implications of such an ending completely warped the perspective that i had, as the reader, of all the events that happened previously. and that was so fucking cool, i literally was geeking out over it after i had finished it.
i’m definitely being dramatic about it because other people might not be as impressed, but i was impressed. and that’s all that matters to me. thus, here it is as an honorable mention.
i’m really excited for when the next book comes out since i don’t know the publication date as of yet, and going into the new year with that feeling is one of the best gifts for me.
~
now!! finally, here we go. my top ten favorite reads of the year!! 🥁
~
10. masters of death by olivie blake
“you can toy with time, with physicality, with memory. the only thing you cannot touch is your opponent; the one thing you cannot alter is what exists for them, what’s real.”
i really enjoyed olivie blake’s writing in the atlas six, so much so that i wanted to read all her other books, and this one was the next contender. the fact that i loved it even more than her other book was one of the biggest surprises of this year, and that just makes me smile every time i think about it.
the humor and banter that these characters had with each other was so refreshing because this is a paranormal story with high stakes and yet the heart of it all was rooted in how human these characters felt, demons and angels and reapers alike, along with so many other characters. as rose-tinted as it may seem regarding how the author depicted Death as a character, his relationship with Fox was very endearing and only further made this story feel like something that isn’t intended to change the world but for the reader to care for these huge cast of characters and to want to root for them, as unconventional as they all are.
this book is one of my all-time comfort reads as i’ve already read it twice after reading it the first time, and i’ll be re-reading it even more in the future!!
9. surrender your sons by adam sass
“i was loved, and it saved me.”
this book was so good. the author has a way with words where you could be chuckling over how much good humor there is between the characters, connor’s character most of all bringing so much charm to the story as the central pov. and then after you manage to finally get to breathe, you find yourself tearing up if not full-out crying because all these characters deserve so much better than what they get because they’re just so young.
the story has such a heavy weight because it mostly takes place in a conversion therapy camp, and there’s just no way to gloss over the abuse that the existence of it alone creates. most of these characters are kids, but there’s also adults who have been manipulated according to others’ norms, and who in the story come to bring even more damage that already exists as soon as these characters are put into this terrible position to warp who they are.
there’s that delicate balance that the author hinges on where they go above and beyond to give comfort to this book’s target audience and to make readers feel like they can see themselves in this story, while also not trying to coddle them as if they’re too young to read about difficult topics such as homophobia and conversion therapy--aka real issues that real teenagers face. just as there’s so much trash humor and many ridiculous circumstances that occur, there’s a lot of toxicity and abuse that these characters face. it hits that much harder knowing you were just cracking up over how weird and eccentric they all are because again, they’re kids. and so were the adults who, exist in this strange conundrum where you find them funny or do empathize with them and yet you know that doesn’t exempt them from some of the shitty things they do.
i mentioned in my goodreads review of this story that the writing, funnily enough, made me think it was something straight out of wattpad. and that wasn’t an insult at all, it was actually a huge compliment coming from me and just one of the main reasons i loved this book so much.
wattpad was a very big part of my life a couple years ago, and reading this book in 2021 made me feel so nostalgic for that time. i can’t exactly explain how it could’ve been something reminiscent of that orange reading app; maybe it could’ve been because of the humor? maybe because of the characters themselves? a specific story on wattpad that this published work reminded me of was “the only faith” by @/SkeneKidz, which takes place in a conversion academy, so that’s just something.
8. counting down with you by tashie bhuiyan
“i want to be happy.”
karina ahmed and ace clyde are one of the softest couples i’ve ever read this year for sure. the romance was something straight out of a fantasy, and only just further contributed to the reason why so many readers fall in love with fictional characters. it was all really wholesome, a huge comfort next to that crawling feeling of anxiety that permeated the entire story.
karina is another one of my favorite fictional characters this year, and all because i genuinely grew to care for her throughout this course of this book. her relationship with ace was absolutely adorable, but was what even more significant to me was seeing her with her family--her grandmother, and her younger brother.
i can tell the author put her heart into this book and i loved that. i could see it in the different relationships that karina had with people who love & appreciate her and just want her to be happy. her relationship with herself was the most important, as she did small things to take care of herself whenever she felt overwhelmed.
her relationship with poetry and the author adding in pieces of it between scenes that have a small or big impact on karina was such a sweet tool to use in the story, helping me get more inside karina’s head. it also established the connection she has with writing, her dream to major in english in college that more significant.
7. the disordered cosmos by chanda prescod-weinstein
“there’s the universe and then there’s the process of developing a mathematical understanding of it. this is physics, and physics is a human process. physics is not the universe. rather, it is one very human attempt to get at its innards.”
something i think that is important to remark about this text is that it is as much about Black lives as it is physics. the author’s discussion of how much the study of science is rooted in racism and social issues in general was so profound that it made me want to delve into the field purely for educational purposes, just to be able to understand the subject, and also myself as there were a lot of parts in the book where i did feel seen.
it was very interesting to learn that just as that quote above states, physics is a concept born out of human minds, the same minds that influenced how much racism & colorism affect our human society. as much as it felt like common sense, having it be explored by a scientist who knows what they’re talking about as they haven’t only studied it but lived it as a Black Jewish agender woman was eye-opening and just all around a fascinating reading experience.
6. velvet was the night by silvia moreno-garcia
“she thought of emilio lomelí, who looked like one of the beautifully drawn characters in the comic book […] leonora, who resembled the heroines who cried their way through such publications […] and maite, who wasn’t even a blurry face, who wasn’t included in any issue.”
this is a noir book, and because of that, there’s a lot of mystery, and a lot of political history as this story does center around Mexico’s Dirty War. witnessing all of that through maite & elvis’ perspectives is the reason why this book is a big favorite of mine, along with the fact that both of their pov’s were so distinct.
maite’s pov revolves around comics as she feels like someone only ever designated to read about the wondrous experiences that lies in fiction but never live it. and even in this “big adventure” that she’s thrust into, there’s that sense of solemness where it feels like even in her own story she’s overshadowed. elvis’ pov sticks to music and the influence that it has to him, personally, while everything else in his life feels like wearing someone else’s skin so that he can matter or at least have some sense of purpose.
until we near the end of this book, neither character interact with each other directly. while both of them are involved in the same mystery that carries on throughout the story, they each have their own respective goals that don’t exactly overlap the other’s, which was really interesting to me. i particularly love how when they do catch each other’s eye at some point, it’s in elvis’ pov where it feels like maite is that sort of elusive character who has something to catch your eye. seeing how they do connect through music, elvis’ special interest, was everything to me and this pairing fit right into my heart.
also, because of this book and because of elvis, i became obsessed with one song in particular due to a playlist made in honor of maite and elvis’ story. “bang, bang (my baby shot me down)” by nancy sinatra is an icon, and i still have it on repeat to this day so highly recommend not just this book, not just this song, but the playlist as a whole. the vibes are immaculate.
5. the city beautiful by aden polydoros
“in giving me my name, my parents had deprived the angel of death of his rightful due. now, after seventeen years, he was finally coming to collect.”
this story is really special to me because it has one of the best writings i’ve ever had the privilege to read, along with a main character who just had such a brilliant voice as it uplifted the voices of other Jewish boys like him who have been taken advantage of. i don’t have anything new to say that i haven’t already said in my goodreads review so here’s a snippet that i’m proud to have gotten to share regarding my feelings for not just alter’s story, but frankie’s, yakov’s, and raizel’s:
“despite technically being in single pov, alter isn’t the only character whose voice we hear from as many others—yakov, frankie, raizel—have such distinct roles in this story that i marveled every time they stood their ground between the pages. each and every one of them have something to push them forward and it’s reflected in all sorts of ways, but one of the main things tying them together is anger & grief. this story has so much of it, and some characters fall despite having so much life & promise in them.
seeing how much Jewish communities treasure their dead and what pushes them forward among the living added a lot of of beauty to this story that felt like was slowly unfolding into a horror. [despite that], there was still so much life as i saw alter try and make it through to the end, and never once was he alone, which had me enraptured until the final page. there’s a lot of moments where scenes feel like they’re passing by so quickly but so much history is being uncovered, so much blood is being spilled, and then there’s moments of quiet—moments where alter reminds himself that he exists, that he’s here, and we see that in the way he observes his surroundings throughout the book and notes small quirks and significant details.”
i absolutely love this story, and more and more people should definitely be reading it.
that’s basically it.
4. the inheritance of orquídea divina by zoraida córdova
“we are celestial beings, made from the spark of the world’s dawn. no one can take that from you.”
this entire fantasy covers the love and loss that comes with family and reaching back into your roots, being swept away by magic that doesn't just run beneath the earth or through one's veins but in the people that you connect with through one single charged moment or in an entire series of them. these characters shine those themes so well, and i loved just as much seeing the author not hold back into delving into the horrors of those who've seen too much magic and want some for themselves, or who have wishes granted upon them only for them to curdle into a bitter mistake. there's a slow pacing throughout this story that evens out as it's split between four parts, and the more i read, the more my anticipation grew as more and more mysteries seemed to get even further tangled until i found myself to have enough pieces to connect them together.
i found myself to get sucked so much further into the past that seeing how certain relationships developed in the future or seemed to break down made my heart hurt in a way i didn't find myself expecting. this felt like one of those clever tools where the author revealed that what was once darkness could become something light and what was once a light in the dark could turn into something much more wicked, and it was completely captivating.
3. the charm offensive by alison cochrun
“here is this thing he put off for so long, that he never thought he would be able to share with another person without humiliation and shame, and now he’s crossed the invisible barrier of his mind to find something surprising on the other side. himself. more about himself.”
romance, to me, is a foreign concept for myself, because it's so easy to revel in it when it comes to how other people experience in it--just as easy as it is for dev who [...] wants to believe that happily ever afters exist. but i can't seem to see myself in that boat, and charlie expresses this same feeling which just made me wonder.... this story is a romance, and yet as much as this reality show follows such a shallow script, the author has enough awareness to see that there's no standard to tie the story to, no format or mold to stick to because a romance can develop in so many different ways and mean something completely different depending on the individual, maybe not even something everyone can classify as romance. i’m thinking of this diverse cast of characters who experience love in so many different ways and with such earnestness as we see them reach out to each other while working on a show that hinders them from [...] feeling like they can be vulnerable.
in a lot of ways, this story made me understand that something i don't see for myself isn't so simple as to reduce it down to me simply not caring to be in a romantic relationship; it's me not fitting into the standards for romance that other people, that alloromantics, follow because it's so part of what's considered "normal". what "normal" means to others is different to the "normal" that i'm trying to envision for myself, the kind of normal that charlie realizes he wants for himself, and that includes taking care of himself in the best ways that he can.
the author dives so much not just into the complexities of sexuality but in mental health, in the need for self-healing in moments of strife--there's this incredible network of bonds that connect these characters to each other in all sorts of ways and with varying levels of depth, it was so heartwarming to see all of it. there's so much heart in the exploration of even the most minor of characters who are being exploited and manipulated for selfish reasons. to see the compassion and empathy shown for all of them, including dev, even at their worst and most disappointing moments made me feel more compassion for myself as i came to understand what drives them all and what fears & insecurities seem to push them back.
the connection between dev and charlie that just grows and grows and grows was a sight to see, and i never wanted to look away because they're so damn soft for each other, and they see so much in the other that the vulnerable and explosive moments shared between them hit me very deeply. charlie had found someone who saw all the bad and the good in him and was so charmed and sweet when it mattered, which made him realize what was important for him, even if it didn't fit others' visions of him, and that was so damn comforting.
2. fifty words for rain by asha lemmie
“no-ri-ko. she scrawled the letters over and over again until she had all but run out of space. the repetition was her familiar lullaby […] tentatively, she traced a different name onto the misty glass, directly beneath her own: oniichan. elder brother.”
to this day, i still don’t know how to speak about this book. i read it all the way back in february and it had such a tight grip on me that i’m here writing this now trying to share the reason why i love this story so much.
the writing’s absolutely stunning and the history was genuinely captivating as this story takes place over the course of a few decades in the mid-20th century, mostly in Japan.
probably the most impactful and memorable reason why this book is #2 on this list is because of nori, and also her & akira’s sibling relationship. it is one of, if not the most, beautiful and heartbreaking dynamics i’ve ever read, and i genuinely love those two to the moon and back.
and my all-time favorite read of 2021 is...🥁
1. these violent delights by micah nemerever
“we’ve found each other, out of everyone else in the world. does that hurt, too?”
+ “there was supposed to be a world outside for them to unite against, and they were supposed to forgive each other once they knew no one else would.”

DC/Star Wars Crossover
Hey, I’m looking for some fanfic writers who are interested in writing a fanfic about one of your favorite DC characters in the Star Wars Universe! Story lines will be first come first serve so if you want to take part let me know as soon as possible! What this entails is either writing one short fanfic each month (equivalent to an individual issue) or one long fanfic every three months (equivalent to a volume). Each post you could have one of three options! First one is that you could adapt a DC story into the Star Wars Universe, second being a totally original story revolving around the character, and the third and final option is a combination of the two, taking elements from canon and stuff from your own personal DC/Star Wars headcanon! Each individual series would be uploaded onto this blog with credit given to the writer and if the wished, on their blog as well. This would be out of your own free time and if you decide at any point you don’t want to do this anymore you are allowed to back out any time! This is going to be meant as a fun and creative experience. Certain writers will need to also collaborate with others as it would be important for the story lines and continuity. For example the Justice League writer will also need to keep up to date with with each members individual series.
As for weapons, if anyone with a strict no killing rule has a lightsaber the setting is turned so low to the point where it is just a major burn but still blocks shots.

P!ATD + other Vegas bands
So a lot of Vegas bands got signed after P!ATD started touring, but I’m just going to mention some highlights with The Higher, YouInSeries, and The Cab since they factor into some P!ATD pictures & events. The guys in most of the other young Vegas bands were repeating the same things P!ATD had said: the Vegas scene sucked & there was nowhere for small bands to play.
THE CAB:
The Cab had been trying to play small shows for a while, but I’ll skip to the point when they gave Spencer Smith one of their demos in early 2007. He helped them get signed to Decaydance in May 2007. P!ATD went to one of The Cab’s shows in March (during the cabin season) and Brendon performed with them. Oh, and P!ATD showed up in one of The Cab’s music videos too. The Cab used AFYCSO’s producer for their first album and both Brendon & Patrick Stump were on it.
Shane Valdez had directed a music video in January 2007 for Sex & Violins when Ian Crawford was with them and then helped Ian get the audition for The Cab. Shane went to watch Ian try out, so Brendon was there too (that’s the same Ian who stepped in when Ryan left in 2009).
Umm I’ll just summarize some other events by saying The Cab majorly played up their P!ATD connection and Brendon helped them out a lot…. like at the November 2007 Guitar Center opening in Vegas. The Cab also opened for P!ATD on tour in fall 2008 (here’s something else Alex posted).
YOUINSERIES:
YouInSeries got signed and made a record in 2006, but I mostly knew them as Brown Eyed Deception. That band had toured unsigned in 2004 & 2005 and played some local Vegas shows in 2003. I casually followed their stuff online, so I was mainly familiar with Kyle Lobeck. Jacob Kirkegard was their bass player you probably recognize from old P!ATD pics. Some of the guys in Brown Eyed Deception went to the same high school as Spencer Smith. Kyle also met Ryan in middle school when they both played baseball… so there’s a solid history there.
Ok let me take a minute to fangirl over Brown Eyed Deception because they were seriously good and I loved them lots. I’ve been looking for some old demos of theirs that I haven’t heard in half a lifetime, but I’ve only found a few on youtube. Is there any chance that someone out there saved all of the demos? Please?
THE HIGHER:
The Higher got signed again after they opened for P!ATD for several shows in December 2005. Tom Oakes was their guitar player.
Tom Oakes also left The Higher in 2008, YouInSeries broke up that year, and I’ll just leave this link here :)

Oranges are Pretty Scary
Craig’s calm day of Red Racer was interrupted by his phone ringing. He glanced at the caller ID and was a mix of annoyed, concerned, and elated to see his boyfriend’s smiling face emblaze the screen. He quickly answered the phone, pulling it to his ear.
“What’s up b-”
“He’s here! He’s fucking here!” Tweek’s voice screeched through the phone. Craig jerked his phone away from his ear briefly before slowly moving it back.
“Tweek, who’s here?” he asked. The uneven breathing on the other end made him worry. He turned off the TV, it was an episode he had already seen anyways and got off the couch and started moving towards the door.
“The President!” Craig paused. That was ridiculous. Garrison was in the white house, he wouldn’t have come back to South Park right now even if it was where he used to live.
“Tweek, where are you?” He kept his voice even, hoping that maybe his sense of calm would travel through the line to his partner.
“The shop, I’m at the shop,” he repeated.
“I’ll be right there, babe.” Craig hung up the phone, opened the door and grabbed his bike, hopping on it and speeding towards his destination.
~
He leaned his bike against the stone walls of Tweek Bros. Coffee and hurried inside.
“Ah, hello Craig. Nice you see you today,” Richard said, cleaning the counter he stood at all day.
“Hi, bye,” Craig spat, walking to the employee’s only area.
Inside, Tweek was twitching intensely, the coffee in his hands spilling all over as he pushed more beans into the grinder.
“Tweek?” The blonde turned around, dropping his glass on the floor.
“Craig! Jesus, I can’t believe he’s here! I’m not going outside. He’ll get me!” His hands pulled on his hair, which Craig immediately tried to stop.
“Tweek, I think you were hallucinating. The president can’t be here, he’s in Washington D.C, and people would have followed him if he came here,” Craig reasoned. Tweek shook his head.
“No, no, he’s here! I saw him!” Tweek insisted. Craig sighed.
“Here, let’s go outside an-”
“I am not going outside! I’ll live here for the rest of my life, nothing can make me go out of this building!” Tweek stated. Craig thought for a moment.
“Tweek, let me go grab something from my house, and then I’ll be back, okay!” Craig started heading for the door, only for thin fingers to grab his wrist.
“Craig, you can’t! He’ll get you, and I can’t lose you!” Craig blushed slightly. While all this was ridiculous, the fact that Tweek didn’t want to lose him made all this bullshit worth it.
“I promise I’ll be careful, babe. If you want I can even call you when I get to my house.” He held Tweek’s hand while he waited to see if he would have to try another method of convincing his boyfriend.
“Fine, but you have to call me! If you don’t call me I swear to God I will kill you if I ever see you again.” Tweek slowly let go of his wrist and hugged him. “Be careful, please.” Craig laughed.
“I said I would, babe. Don’t worry. I’ll be a half-hour at most.” Craig squeezed him reassuringly and left the shop.
The atmosphere in town was off, even more than usual. No one was on the street, windows were covered in curtains, and the lights were off.
His house was normal, and his father waved hello at him when he went inside.
“Hey Craig, have you seen anything weird around town recently?” he asked with a raised eyebrow. Craig shook his head.
“No. Why?”
“I’m trying to figure out if the people in this town are crazy or not,” Thomas deadpanned.
Craig hopped up the stairs two at a time, shouting back to his father.
“I could tell you right now, they are!” He entered his room and opened his closet, calling Tweek at the same time.
“Craig?”
“Hey babe, I told you I’d call.” Craig sifted through a pile of blankets he had in the corner of the closet, pulling out a grey one and inspecting it.
“You should probably just stay home Craig,” Tweek’s voice mumbled from the other end, “I know that the president is here Craig. Stay home.” Craig shook his head immediately, forgetting that Tweek couldn’t see him.
“No. I’ll be back to the coffee shop soon, okay?” Craig said. He held the blanket to his side, taking in how fuzzy it was. He understood why it was Tweek’s favourite, it was warm, soft, and had weight to it.
“You are so fucking stubborn! God damn it, Craig!” Craig laughed.
“I’ll be right there honey, see you in a few minutes,” Tweek mumbled something that Craig didn’t catch. “What was that, babe?”
“Nothing, get your ass back here,” Tweek ordered.
“Yes, sir.”
~
Craig could hear the commotion in the back room from the time he opened the door to the coffee shop. Richard stood calmly at the counter, taking customers orders while his wife made them. The patrons seemed curious as to what was happening but no one asked or went to check. Craig sighed and went to the counter.
“Can I have a coffee?” he asked.
“I need more detail than that, son. What kind?” Richard grabbed a cup, seemingly intent on making Craig’s order himself.
“I don’t know, whatever Tweek’s favorite is. It’s for him.” Craig watched him expertly make the drink, his hands moving smoothly following a cycle he had probably done thousands of times before. He handed the drink over to Craig with a smile.
“There you go, son.”
“How much?” He fished out his wallet before Richard put out his hand to stop him.
“It’s on the house. You’re helping my son out.” Craig suspected his ulterior motives being that it shined on him as a caring father and highlighted his and Tweek’s relationship.
“Thanks,” he said dryly.
When he opened the door he saw a pool of spilt coffee and another broken glass, along with Tweek trying desperately trying to mop it up while he twitched frequently.
“Tweek.”
“Craig!” He followed Craig’s gaze to the mess on the floor. “Oh, I knocked over a test brew, it’s fine!”
“Do you need help, honey?” Tweek shook his head.
“No, I’m fine, it’s fine.” Craig sighed and leaned down, picking up shards of glass.
“Are you still worried about-”
“Yes.” He stood still briefly, then dipped his mop into a bucket to rinse it. “I don’t want to go outside ever again. Why is he back? Does he want to make up more lies about me?”
“Are you sure you actually saw him?” Craig inquired. Tweek nodded.
“Yes! I’m positive.” He pulled the mop out and returned to furiously trying to soak up the spilt coffee. Craig walked to the trash and dropped the contents of his hand into it.
He waited for Tweek to finish before he spoke again.
“Do you want to go outside?” Tweek looked at him, dumbfounded.
“Are you fucking serious? No!” Tweek snapped.
“Hear me out. I’ll be going with you and I’ll be by your side the whole time. We’ll just go sit on the bench near the post office. We can just hang out there for a bit, so you can see that it’s completely safe,” Craig reasoned. Tweek gripped his hair.
“God fucking dammit, I hate you. Fine, let’s go.” He grabbed Craig’s hand, letting him lead the way.
The moment they stepped out into the cold, Tweek’s grip on Craig tightened immensely. He stood as close to him as he could without outright clinging to him. He was shaking, he was twitching, and his little noises were incredibly noticeable. Craig cast a worried glance at him but continued.
“Are you okay?” Tweek shook his head.
“No, but I never am.”
“We can go back inside if you want.”
“You said we should come out here, and it’s fine.”
“I know I said that, but if you’re really uncomfortable out here we can head back in.”
Tweek wanted to go inside. He knew he saw President Garrison. He knew that man was crazy, for fucks sake he was in his class at one point. He didn’t feel safe. First, North Korea threatened to bomb him. Now, Canada was about to nuke them if they heard Garrison was here.
However, Craig was so sure it was safe.
He didn’t want to mess stuff up because of his anxiety again.
“I’m sure I’m good Craig, let’s go,” he squeezed Craig’s hand. “Come on before I change my mind.”
It was when they sat down on the bench that Tweek’s panic attack started. He heard something and saw a shadow dart by and that’s when his breathing started getting uneven.
“He’s here! He’s fucking here! Craig! I fucking saw him!” Craig quickly put a hand on his shoulder and started reaching into his bag.
“Tweek, Tweek, focus on my voice, okay? Focus on me, babe.” He pulled the blanket out of his bag and put it around Tweek, then handed him the cup of coffee he had also bought.
“No! I saw him! He was right there! I swear!” He pointed in the direction he had seen the shadow. Craig looked and saw nothing.
“It’s your eyes tricking you, honey.” Tweek hated that one thing about Craig, how he would doubt if he was reliable like that. He shook his head furiously, leaning against Craig’s hand.
He was so focused on the two of them, as Craig was as well, that they didn’t even notice Stan and Kyle coming up to them.

Ben Fankhauser’s Insta Live story highlights (4/5) aka Ben’s Broadway Bistro
So there’s a lot to unpack here. It’s an hour of footage. I only did the first half but this is still long af
You have 24 hours to rewatch it on his instagram story (plznfanku) but there were also some lovely people who recorded it and have posted it either on here or on youtube (I don’t have any links so feel free to reblog/comment with them)
- his little wave when he’s playing piano (and he’s so good wtf)
- I love how happy and joyful he looks while performing, even to a simple camera and Kyle
- if you don’t know who Kyle is, he’s his roommate and bestie and let me tell you, Kyle was amazing
- when the song he’s singing (idk what it was sorry) changes tempo and becomes all upbeat he just radiates sunshine I love him!!!!
- glad to say he still owns the title of “riff daddy”
- admitting he’s terrible at Instagram HA
- his little spin and snap
- ”we’re making breakfast”
- 2 seconds later, someone commenting: “what are we making?”
- Ben Fank: “we’re making breakfast”
- YES BEN BABY BUT WHAT BREAKFAST FOOD ARE WE MAKING
- “that’s how I’m getting through this corona virus. Coffee, I guess.”
- “let me tell you about oven bacon. merp merp merp merp muow” yes tell me about oven bacon
- “set your oven to 380 degrees. Why 380 degress? Cause I’m a random motherfu err” he says when he said shit a minute earlier
- “*quoting a comment* an erster. Mkay, okay I see you.”
- he asks for tips from chefs like three times
- shows off his 3D Illuminati pepper
- intermission: show some love for Kyle!!!!
- has great cutting technique (you curl your fingertips in slightly on top of what you’re cutting to keep your fingertips from being under the knife)
- precision + Ben Fank = a match made in heaven
- Kyle flipping the camera on himself by accident
- favorite song from Newsies: Carrying the Banner + clapping and a salsa dance
- sort of sad because Ben doesn’t sing in that song :(
- he talks with his hands and with his facial expressions so much wow I love
- little wink wink ;)
- everyone asking him to sing Poor Guys Head is Spinning (abbreviated PGHIS) with Alex Wong encouraging everyone
- he acknowledges them and then goes on to ignore them LMFAO
- Ben (sort of, not really) wanting to be Evan Hansen shakes me to MY CORE the power that could cause...
- okay... like... this man I mean I know he is literally Davey Jacobs BUT HE IS LITERALLY DAVEY JACOBS
- “tall ass potato”
- he stops everything to make sure it is shown how he cuts his potatoes
- intermission: gratitude towards first responders  ❤️
- the way he looks up while talking about burritos is really cute but also lmao
- when he’s asked his favorite dog breed: “oooooOHHHHHHHH”
- “Y’all are literally watching me cut potatoes” YES AND WE DON’T REGRET A THING
- “wITH preCISION”
- doesn’t know what kind of potato he’s working with (gold potatoes, Ben. Gold potatoes)
- “y’all didn’t think you’d get this closeup to my *haaaaands*
- “can y’all appreciate the precision? Cause I can.”
- Intermission: I am once again asking for your cooking tips
- Kyle: “Someone wants to know what’s your favorite thing about Kyle?” Ben: *high pitched* Is that for real?”
- he goes on to talk about how Kyle is tech savy and rigged up their apartment instead of talking about his personality or qualities lmao
- his little sneeze and spin, also people telling him to wash his hands afterwards
- calls himself a grandpa
- his mom sent him to theatre camp when he was a LAD
- “this is getting pretty hot” he says with a head bob
- also gets excited that we got a look at Kyle when he accidently switches the camera onto him
- everyone commenting about the bacon because he hasn’t checked on it since the start of the video
- doesn’t know how much olive oil he put in his pan but it must cover the bottom
- “hot grEEse”
- *vegetables sizzle when he puts them in oiled pan* “that’s the sound when you make a really good zinger at a friend and you walk away it’s like zzzz” *snaps*
- I want to know when he went to Bryant Park Christmas market because I was there this year and if he was there when I was there and didn’t know I would scream
- “this water is a beralin”
- you can see how proud he is of his potatoes when he puts them into the water
- calls the boiling water water, then grEEse, then water again
- intermission: condolences to people who have had their plays and musicals canceled because of Corona virus
- his profile is so nice w o w
- uses the same spoon to stir the vegetables to stir the potatoes because he’s a “dirty birdie”
- demands for the PGHIS in the comment section (led by Alex Wong again)
- his favorite yiddish slang word is slamazel (might have spelt that wrong)
- intermission: love for the Flamingo Kid
- checks on the bacon finally
- *talking about bacon* “you like it crisp or what? If you don’t like it crisp begone.” (favorite quote of the video)
- him and his grubby lil fingers
- *talking about Ozark* “wuufh wuufh! it’s great”
- gets sort of bashful about talking about him playing poker hehe
- the way he “walks down the street”
- *Ben goes offscreen* question: what’s you go to hand washing song?” Ben *slides back onscreen with a smile on his face* I’m going to play it for you
- couldn’t think to describe his potatoes as hard
- *bacon pops* “Did you hear that? This bacon is trying to sass me! Did you hear that?”
- messes up the abbreviation for PGHIS a couple of times
- his little “poor” when he’s trying to figure out what he wants to do 🥺!!!!!!
- I’m sure you heard his performance already. Amazing.
Okay that was the halfway point of the video so if you want me to do the other part lmk haha

M'S OFFICIAL REVIEW OF TODAY'S YESTERDAY'S EPISODE OF BEN'S BROADWAY BISTRO (24/5/2020)
(EDIT: HI MY DUMBASS FORGOT TO POST THIS YESTERDAY... i thought i posted it but apparently not lmao... ANYWAY H-HERE U R FOLKS...)
uh so this is my first review in like 2 weeks i think. Whoops. in my defense i did watch the lives i just... haven't written a 'review' post bc... i-i've been busy... not bc i forgot or anything... but anyway, think not of my mistakes, but of today's stream's highlights!
today's dish was a french toast! a breakfast food loved by a lot of people, including I. ben actually said smth about breakfast in general that really stuck with me, but for the life of me I Cannot Remember The Quote. maybe one day i'll edit this post n write it in here. hmm.
i must confess: i don't remember the name of today's dish. Forgive, pls. but, my personal favourites were toast everlasting, hamiltoast, and falsettoast. and—those names. i just. to every benonce stan out there: u r Brilliant. Thank U.
EDIT: ben's just saved the live on his profile and the official name for tkday's dish is hamiltoast! woo! we Love That!
little egg whisk made a comeback today! it's Alive and Well, and for that we are Grateful. ben even said something about keeping it away from us. the Audacity. this is why kyle is king.
speaking of camera king kyle, near the end of the stream, everyone started flooding the comments with words such as 'FEED KYLE' and 'JUSTICE FOR KYLE'. it made me wonder: is our king being treated right? is he getting the Luxury he deserves? we always get to see ben eat, but kyle himself..?
(note: this is a joke. kyle is all well and good.)
(... at least, that's what ben wants us to think...)
oh! ben said the Phrase Loved By All a total of 2 times today. What Is The Phrase, you ask? why, grubby little fingers, of course! us benonce stans were getting nervous near the end—as the dish was almost finished, but, the phrase was not uttered even once! but fret not, fanhausers (haha! get it? fan-hausers..? yeah i'm sorry...), for he said it twice in the end!
speaking of keeping us in suspense, ben kept. fucking. STALLING. like, when's he gonna put the bread in the eggy thing? when's he gonna cut the bread? we don't know, could be 2 whole days from now, because Sir kept fucking STALLING—
but it ok we love him for that
ooh he also baked the bread he used for today. Amazing. Brilliant. he really went out n got made that bread. we Stan a Talented King. 👏😔
very off topic but also very much relevant: he was Very Spinny today. did a lil spin when he entered the kitchen. A Brilliant Power Move.
he was actually very energetic today. someone even asked (something like) 'damn i need whatever coffee u r drinking that gives u so much energy' which, honestly? m00d.
huh. overall not much really happened in today's stream. it's a pretty chill one i think. nice to tune into. kudos to ben n kyle for giving us Good Content on a weekly basis :-)
oh my goodness i nearly forgot! he sang absolutely WONDERFULLY today! i damn near weeped from the display of sheer beauty and talent. again, idk much about the songs he sang (fake fan, smh my head 😔) but i KNOW that stand by me was in there at one point, and i got fucking hyped, and it was a beautiful performance. and yes, of course, king had to be extra so there were no scarcity of riffs in both performances. Love Him For That!
that being said, this week's episode gets 5 eggs out of 6 from me, theydies and gentlethems! ben made beautiful looking french toast, kyle gave us Excellent famera work as usual (and even a drum roll at one point!) and i think it's pretty safe to say that us BBB fans were very entertained.
whats keeping it from getting a full 6/6 eggs? well... i won't say anything but... y'know mr fankhauser, we've never seen kyle eat the meals u make in the show... now i'm not saying ANYTHING HERE but... cough justice for kyle coughcough
that's all for today! till next week, folks! :-)

Movies I watched Feb 8 - Feb 14
Tumblr media
So I’m still on a huge kung-fu kick (pun intended) since I was working on a spreadsheet of 100 martial arts movies, which I’ll be posting soon. So all but 2 of the movies I watched this week contained martial arts.
Movies I watched this week behind the cut.
Tumblr media
The Prodigal Son
Big fan of Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung and I’ve been meaning to watch this for a long time but just haven’t seen it available anywhere til now, found it on a free streaming channel called TCL on my Roku tv, so I watched it and loved it. My favorite part of this movie is the guy that plays his master Lam Ching-ying, he’s one of those guys that’s ubiquitous in Hong Kong movies but typically in a supporting role. I really thought his performance was really good for what could’ve been (and usually is) a caricature, a lot of the other cares ARE caricatures, intentionally, but Lam Ching-ying plays an effeminate opera troupe leader but he’s nuanced rather than over the top about it. Warning that he is called some homophobic slurs within the movie. Fun movie, great choreography, and a good satisfying story too, will definitely purchase a hard copy of this one.
Tumblr media
Martial Arts Master Wong Fei Hung
Found this while looking for more movies featuring Lam Ching-ying, he plays the bad guy in this, a Japanese swordsman bent on defeating dojo masters to prove he’s the best. Chin Ka-lok plays the hero, Wong Fei Hung, who is a Chinese folk hero that has been played by every major Hong Kong action star; Jackie, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Sammo, Gordon Liu, and so many others. I didn’t know this before but this, Drunken Master, Once Upon a Time in China, Iron Monkey, Rise of the Legend and so many other films are fictionalized stories about Wong Fei Hung in different stages of his life. An interesting thing I’m finding about Chinese culture through film is they treat historical figures really no differently than we treat superheroes. Wong Fei Hung, Ip Man, Huo Yuanjia (portrayed by Jet Li in Fearless among others), and it’s kinda cool and beautiful that after these people have long passed on they have become these epic larger than life characters. Anyway, the movie is cool, has really fun choreography. It kinda ends abruptly, but that’s because it touches on elements of his life that are later explored in other films. Cool movie.
Tumblr media
Unlucky Stars
This stars and is directed by Dennis Ruel, on the left, its an independent martial arts film that is on youtube for free, definitely recommend it. The title and the whole film is an homage to 80′s Hong Kong cinema; there’s a “lucky stars” series of films that star Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao and others. If you’re bout that life you’ll catch references, if you’re not it’s still a fun little beat em up. It’s not going to blow you away with it’s cinematography, story or acting, but I thought it was really good for a low budget affair of essentially a bunch of stunt performers getting together to make a movie together. Had some good laughs, fights and stunts are great, I hope these guys get an opportunity to keep doing bigger and better stuff.
Tumblr media
Undisputed 2
I’ve known about the Undisputed films for a long time and was never too in a rush to watch them, decided to rent the movies on Prime and was not disappointed. When you watch a lot of East Asian action films the choreography in American films, especially straight to video stuff like this, can seem a little slow and boring, but that wasn’t the case with this at all. The fights are fun, the characters are fun, and Scott Adkins kills it. Oh, and by the way Undisputed 1 features Ving Rhames, and I don’t remember else, I saw it eons ago, I don’t think it has any connection to these films other than the concept of fighting in prison.
Tumblr media
Undisputed 3
It was such a smart move to turn the franchise’s focus to the villain of the previous film. Boyka has a real Vegeta story arc in these movies, and his super athletic style is just fun to watch. The highlight of this movie to me is when he faces off against a capoeira expert and they’re both just flipping around during the fight. I think this movie is my favorite of the Undisputed series, it has a satisfying end.
Tumblr media
Triad Wars
This is a mob movie with Sammo as the boss and Wu-Jing, pictured above as his enforcer. It’s more of a crime movie than an action movie, but the action scenes are crazy, it’s like if you’re watching the Departed than all of a sudden someone starts flipping around and cutting off everybody’s arms. There are some brutal kills in this. I honestly don’t know if I was following the story that well, the weird thing about movies where different crime factions go to war is it’s like... these people are all evil, and we watch them do fucked up shit, and they all have the same motivation; money, so it’s like I’m not really emotionally invested in what happens, I’m just here to enjoy a guy in all white landing on top of  car and then proceeding to kill everyone with a sword.
Tumblr media
Fighter in the Wind
I had been looking for this movie for a while but forgot what it was called, and it’s hard to search for martial arts movies because what are you going to search “the movie where a guy fights a lot of people”? Anyway I finally found it and it’s a cool movie, another film that’s based on a true historical figure, I don’t know how faithful this movie is but it was enjoyable. This coward who is always being humiliated in fights decides to train himself to become stronger and then challenges every dojo owner in Japan to a fight. It’s a karate movie, so the choreography is not as flash as kung-fu films, and he essentially wins his fights not because he has better technique but because he can take more punishment and hit harder. SIde note: THe lead actor looks so much like Stephen Chow it was distracting.
Tumblr media
Judas and the Black Messiah
The hype is real. This was a good ass movie. The performances are all perfect. I knew that Fred Hampton was assassinated, but to see the whole story and how it went down and to get to know him really gave you the full impact of just how fucked up it was on so many levels.
Tumblr media
Undisputed 4
Back to Undisputed! Boyka’s back baby! Cool movie, and furthers his character development. I still think I like the previous movie a little better but this was fun too.
Tumblr media
Brigsby Bear
Kyle Mooney is the current best member of SNL, he wrote this film and it’s funny and weird and endearing. I guess after watching people fight in prison, the true story of a black radical being assassinated by the government, and countless people dismembered and impaled, I wanted to watch something a little more lighthearted and fun. Kyle Mooney is an awkward manchild who wants to recreate a show he grew up with. I don’t want to say anymore than that, but I enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
A Kid From Tibet
Yuen Biao with some Golden Child style mystical action adventure. It’s not mind-blowing in terms of action, but I liked this, it has some precursor to Naruto type stuff in it, doing hand jutsus to initiate powers and stuff like that. My favorite thing about the movie is the main henchwoman played by Nina Li Chi, who I’m not retroactively deciding is one of 80′s crushes. I actually went ahead and bought this on DVD just because it’s such an obscure movie I wanted to have it my physical collection.
Tumblr media
Nina Li Chi
That’s all for this week!

Gushing time.
Rune Factory 4 Special arrived a day early, so my entire day has been consumed in nostalgia. The original Rune Factory 4 was the first video game I ever bought on release day - I remember saving up all my money and making my mum drive me to like three different shops trying to find one that had it. I was already a fan of the franchise - before then, Rune Factory 3 had been my favourite video game, across the board. Aside from a playthrough of the first game last year, I haven’t played a Rune Factory game in a long time, certainly not RF4. But just starting up the game and hearing the music again, it was like it was suddenly seven years ago. Running around Selphia and seeing all the characters again - I love JRPGs, have played a lot of them, and I can think of very few that have characters that have stuck with me this long. And the aesthetics - the best thing about the Rune Factory franchise has always been the aesthetics, the music, the scenic and character design, just the general world. It’s a beautifully whimsical balance of urban and fantasy, and it’s the only JRPG world I think I’ve ever come across that I would genuinely want to live in. Rune Factory may no longer be my favourite game franchise - but I don’t think there has ever been another series that has felt so much like home to me.
Here’s a very long selection of personal highlights from the art book (by which I mean photos of the art followed by my rambling opinions):
Tumblr media
Yeah, see, here’s the thing - Rune Factory 1 is not a good game. I could write an entire essay on why it’s bad (I actually started and got pretty damn far before realising no one’s interested in my two thousand word review of a game that came out over a decade ago - the short version is ‘Misty Bloom-fucking-Cave’. Anyone who’s played RF1 knows exactly what I mean). Don’t get me wrong, it has good qualities - excellent boss fights, for one, and also, as with the rest of the franchise, it is aesthetically wonderful. But ultimately, it feels less like playing a video game, and more like playing a proof of concept for a game. Which I guess it kind of was - and I can’t hate it because we wouldn’t have the rest of the series without it.
But it literally ends with a dragon spewing plant breath on a tank to make a turnip grow out of the gun. ‘Profound’, my arse.
Tumblr media
It’s Raguna! The “master sowrdsman!” (that is not a typo on my part that is a direct quote from the ending of Rune Factory 1 this game’s script had so many issues-). And Mist! My favourite of the ‘canon’ love interests!
Tumblr media
Best girl! When I was a kid, my favourite love interest in RF1 was Rosetta. As an adult, it is Tabatha. I don’t know what it is about her that I find so likeable (she’s as lacking in personality as any other RF1 character), but... idk, I just like her a lot.
Tumblr media
Camus’s big ambition is to leave town like even once. He will never achieve it
Tumblr media
Fun fact about Melody is that she’s extremely depressed, a fact that comes up once in an optional side quest and is never addressed again. It’s incredibly dark for an RF game
Tumblr media
Fun fact about Lukas is that he sucks (he’s one of those ‘obsessed with talking about how hot all the girls are’ characters, an archetype that thankfully doesn’t show up again in these games). But also, interestingly enough, thanks to one of RF1′s many, many script errors, if you marry Rosetta (the girl Lukas is the most obsessed with), he’s supposed to express disappointment that he lost her to Raguna - but instead, he implies that he’s disappointed to have lost Raguna to her. The translators typoed their way into giving him a sexuality change. Which is honestly kind of amazing.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THIS SLIME THIS IS SUCH A COOL SLIME LITERALLY EVERY OTHER JPRG SLIME GO HOME DRAGON QUEST GET FUCKED (jk I like Dragon Quest a lot and its slimes are cool too). Wish you could see in-game that this is what they’re meant to be like.
Tumblr media
I just generally love the monster designs, they’re really charming
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 2! The RF game with the most weirdly mundane protagonist name (Kyle. In the main four games of this franchise we’ve got Raguna, Micah, Lest, Frey... and Kyle). The two generations thing was actually very cool, but when they say ‘each chapter captures a different lifestyle’, what they really mean is ‘the first half is a weak Harvest Moon I’m sorry, STORY OF SEASONS game, and the second half is a pretty good Rune Factory game’
Tumblr media
lookit this little fuck
Tumblr media
Yue Yue Yue! I love Yue so much, she’s great. She’s kind of like a much chiller version of Anna from Fire Emblem.
Tumblr media
It’s really cool that we got to see grown up Cecilia (she was in RF1). I have this silly headcanon that if Kyle doesn’t marry Mana, Nicholas (her friend in 1) comes to visit Cecilia one day in the hazy-post game future, and meets Mana, and they get together. While Yue is my favourite, I do genuinely like Mana a lot, and I just want her to find love, I guess.
Tumblr media
Here’s original Barrett! There’s a reason he was popular enough to make a reappearance (well, aside from the whole grumpy pretty boy thing he’s got going on) - he was a great character in this game. His and Dorothy’s relationship is also definitely the most compelling of the rival romances. Bonus Max, who also has a little shout-out in RF4 (check the diary in what will become Dylas’s bedroom at the start of the game)
Tumblr media
Ray is male, but apparently he was originally going to be a female character, as he has an unused portrait in a wedding dress. My friend and I agree that this makes him a Trans Icon
Tumblr media
Monster designs remain excellent. Especially the goblins
Tumblr media
Skipping over Frontier (and also Oceans later), as I never got to play it growing up due to not having a console, and still haven’t got around to it - might try this summer. Except I do need to point out that these guys should be memes. I don’t know in what way. But they should.
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 3! My first RF game. The transformation thing was very cool, even if it was basically useless outside the main story. My friend and I spent hours mucking about in the WiFi dungeon. I loved the desert settlement and all of the dungeon designs in general, and man, RF3 is just great. I hope it gets a remake one day.
Tumblr media
Raven Raven Raven! I LOVE Raven (as do most). Her story with Micah is the first time I can remember getting genuinely invested in a video game romance. I’m so glad she cameos in RF4. I love her. She’s wonderful.
Tumblr media
I have an odd fondness for Marian. When I was about twelve, I decided to do a playthrough where I deliberately romanced the least popular bachelorette. After poking around on forums, I determined that character to be Marian, and did a run with her. And... I actually came to really like her. I find her endearing. I get that people find her annoying and don’t like her... unethical medical practices, but doing that run has still made me a pretty protective of her. It’s been a long time since I played RF3, so maybe I’d change my mind if I replayed now, but currently, as far as I’m concerned,  Marian’s a good’un.
I think I also used to low key ship her with Collette lol
Tumblr media
Pia’s official art has always been super weird to me because it’s so not what her character is like in-game. She’s a ditzy airhead. This makes her look so serious
Tumblr media
RAINBOW! Another character whose art makes them look way more serious than they actually are. Daria is great and would be a meme if this game was more popular. I think she’s also implied to be a relative of Margaret.
Tumblr media
I’ve always been super confused about what Kuruna’s skirt is meant to be. Is it fur? Is it part of her shirt? Is it even a skirt at all?
Tumblr media
Check it out, it’s the guy everyone would ship Micah with if this game was more popular
Tumblr media
I want Zaid to make a reappearance and interact with Doug. Pretty sure it’s canon that they’re from the same clan? Think it would be very interesting.
Tumblr media
RF3 definitely had the coolest farm. Also, still love the desert settlement.
Tumblr media
This is from Oceans, so I have no context, but it’s just so cool that I had to share
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 4. Culmination of the series is right - when I was playing it for the first time, I remember being blown away by just how much it is a true love letter to the franchise. I have never come across another game series that so consistently grew and improved from entry to entry. RF4 was a perfect ending.
Not that I’m complaining about getting RF5. Quite the opposite.
But if it had been the end (as we all thought it was until about a year ago), well, like I say. Perfect.
Tumblr media
Well. Aside from soda can nipples. Can’t believe they didn’t fix those. Though in some ways, that would have made me sad too
Tumblr media
Dolce has such a cool design, in both human and monster form. I’ve always kind of crack-shipped her with Margaret, for no real reason at all
Tumblr media
Vishnal! I love Vishnal. Vishnal is pure as heck. Marrying him this time around.
Tumblr media
Doug! My choice from last time around. Another character who looks more serious in his official art than he is in-game (well... most of the time)
Tumblr media
And then there’s Dylas, who looks much happier here than he does most of the time. Kind of looks like he and Doug swapped bodies, actually. There’s a fanfic prompt for you.
Their ship name is Dyldo. I love them
Tumblr media
Leon is nostalgic for me mostly because my friend and I used to get into a lot of arguments about whether or not he’s the hottest character in the game. She maintains that he is, because muscles. I maintain that muscles aren’t actually that attractive. It is a rift that divides us to this day
(He looks oddly... younger in this art though? Weird)
Tumblr media
Sechs Empire is such an unfortunate name. Seriously. How rushed was RF1′s localisation team? All those script errors, and then this (the Sechs were the antagonists in the first game, and were only referenced in passing in the rest until RF4 - so it was a bit of a ‘sins of the father’ situation by then).
Seriously, try saying ‘Sechs Emperor’ out loud and tell me you can take this man seriously
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I??? Love??? Them???
Tumblr media
I??? LOVE??? THEM???
Tumblr media
Still confused as to why Kiel, Xiao Pai, Arthur and Margaret are on the cover now. Don’t get me wrong, I like them, but... Amber, Dylas, Dolce and Leon made way more sense? Even the Archival Cover makes more sense (Vishnal, Clorica, Forte), as those three are all kind of Lest/Frey’s servants (well, Forte for the whole town, but still). Of those first four, all but Arthur basically lift right out of the game with little-to-no impact on the story
Tumblr media
NO HAT TABATHA NO HAT TABATHA
Tumblr media
I’ve always really loved this Raven picture
Tumblr media
And I am thankful for you <3

required to be present so i just kept all the stuff to myselfi was learning classic guitar from 1st grade to 8th still play to this day , in music school i kinda learned h2p electric but didnt practice enough to be able to play good , also know some pianobeen listening to post rock and mostly fate music these past 10 monthssucker for good anime tho i ve been out of it lately havent even finished my summer ones , oregairu has a nice ending from what i got spoiled fromanyway thing is i am sad most of the time , i try not to show it cause i like the stereotype of being the strong guy that everyone can depend on and almost never see being emotional and also like the cool tempered guy type , tho lately i ve been craving a lot of attention that i drop the act of the calm n cool sometimesthings with my parents didnt go to well these past years , only now i can say that we ve finally kinda calmed down , mom and dad started falling out of it around 8th grade cause lots of fighting , big sis kindof took the role of mother while on her teen years , feels like she had it much worse than me10th grade sis leaves home to go elsewhere to start studies for uni , i m left with ma and lil sis back homethen i understand that i have to be there for my little sis which also got in my school that year (3kids-3years difference each) so i tried to assume the role of the big brother but she was closer to her older sister than me , i was closer to my older sister as well , feels like i was doing my lil sis wrong but i cpould relate more to big sis and could chat with her more about stufflil sis didnt open up to me a lot even to this day , she has been a lot more comfortable with me through the years i think cause she told me something important recently , kinda feelsbadman tho cause i wanted to be closer to her and i kinda tried but i think not hard enough cause she didnt seem to get any closer , cried once about it in front of my mother which was the absoluteliest worst cause i didnt want her to see me being fragile jesustho even now that i m not home i talk to her play some among us tried making her start xenoverse 2 that didnt go farhave some friends from school , we would only go all together at internet cafes , but mostly 4 of em would go out togetherin my school i had some friends from scouts tooi have an insta , used to post "cool" pics kinda stopped cause i like looking cool in front of others but i havent been in the mood to try in around a year nowused to be in some conservatory guitar groups with some other kids there , with one girl from there i used to be quite in touch until recently that i stopped seeing her for some reasons maybe i ll explain l8rwe had fun and i really mean it , we used to go on trips to play songs on different cities and stages , our group became kinda known the 2-3 good active years we were active , it still is but these years were the originals , now there are other peoplefucking christ its 2:27started playing in that group with the originals in 2017 till 2019 , we were kids from different ages going from 6th to 10th graders but i didnt understand the different in our ages until recently that i found one of the guys from the group in my cityanother closer friend is a guy from my school , met him in grade 7 still talk to him , used to sit together most of the years pretty neat guy , peculiar character but really interesting kind smart and hard workingman why couldnt my teen years be like shirou from fsn that would be awesomehad entrance exams 4-5 months ago , didnt really go as planned , shooted for Corfu didnt get in cause rather than 15 i got 10 in my last exam so i m still in my city , tho i live alone and go to my local uni insteadJuly 2019 i moved out of my old house moved in with ma and her husband with my sis , stayed there till september then till june-july 2020 i was living with my fathertbh i decided to write this post after watching a vid of Korone talking about Okayu thinking that i ve never been in an actual relationship and that i eould want to experience that but dont know where to start from , losing weight ? becoming outgoing again ? learn how to talk to girls ?i started watching anime back in 2015 on my 3ds i remember watching dubbed Inazuma Elevensince like 2 weeks ago i reached 201 anime completedok i ll stop here for tonight cause i got online uni classes tmrw i keep stimestamps for whenever i finally post this -Tuesday 3/11/2020 02:41used to be around 85-90kg in 12th grade , put on around 20-28 kilos since March 2020 , managed to lose 8-10 kilos in the summer but i m still around 30kilos up from the normal amount based on my height , got a subscription to a gym jan2019 but only managed to get into it for a short period on spring 2019 then autumn 2019 then lost motivation and let go , since March2020 i ve been doing some weights at home , tho when i look at myself in the mirror it doesnt really change how bad i feel about my body , i think my old motivation used to be a girl i used to have a crush on but not surethings with my parents werent all that great and i was mentally better when i would talk with them , they are openminded af and supportive too but puberty makes you see stuff differently like everyone is against you like the world is against you (last one might be true dunno yet) , living on my own now seems to be a bit better but as our Greek ancestors used to say theres no good without bad and the bad in this scenario is that its lonely as fuck , having lived for 18 years with my family it really hits a weird spot , everything feels lonelier now with the virus spreading around not being able to see others as much as we used to , uni doesnt feel nice , many people dont pay attention and its like the second half of 12th grade all over againgot my monthly money 4days ago , went from 200 to 9.28 quickly , when i have money i spend when i dont i m stingy , mostly like to build computers , watch lots of Linus , Paul , Kyle , Jay etc. most of my money goes to buying stuff about computers food , used to give lots of money to internet cafes when i used to hang out with the guys from school , not anymorewith the start of uni we all met new friends even i but i still feel like i am drifting apart day by day , stopped talking to my old girl friend cause i was kinda done with her attitude , called me some names i didnt appreciate because i put up with her attitude , most of the time in her own world , only would really pay attention and try to change herself when it was something she cared about , one of them wasnt her character , but to give the goods of her she was a good friend dont know if i can say she still is a friend or just someone i know , she helped me even with the girl i had a crush on , was really fun on trips with the guitar group , all in all a fun person , thing is i stopped texting her and telling her to go out cause it was 80% me trying and the other 20% her and i think that proved right when i stopped talking to her cause i thought she will see that i m not talking to her she ll think somethings wrong she ll message me to go out and have fun , send me a happy bday message posted some pics of me , didnt send me anything else after , stopped talking to her around the start of October , if i hadnt asked her something about her uni and if it wasnt my bday i dont think we wouldve talked in all of october . last saturday i was working in the area she lives in my city decided to call her sometimes didnt answer tried to suprise her and see how she is by going to her house , noone answered maybe they were on a trip idk , but it feels weird man , in the first half of the year me and a common friend of her and me went out one night , ended up being the bad guy to make her understand that she did something wrong that night , after she left i was left with our common friend talked about stuff and mostly her and i expressed myself , i knew that coming summer me and her would end up at different places so i wanted to tell her all the wrongs with her so that she could finally understand what i ve been putting up against and make her understand that she HAS to pay attention to people around her and that she will meet new people and that she ll have to be careful about her character , used to have a bit of crush on her back in 7th grade , can kinda understand why that went . On the other hand i didnt want to part ways with her with our last words being me ranting , one thing brought the other and she wont be going to her uni's city until early 2021 so i managed to go out with her some more in the summer and september . kinda feels bad to see that almost noone remembered my bday cause i remember in cram school when someone had their bday they would get a fucking cake , dont mistake me i got one , from my ma my two sisters and my moms husband , thing is i wanted to have something happen with friends , nothing happend , around 4 people remembered my bday and the others just send me some happy bday messages after seeing posts from the girl i m talking about .also heres a good song to listen to while reading stuff on reddit Sorrow from FSN by MN64 cant post links from what i understandgonna stop here for now might edit later -Tuesday 3/11/2020 15:15thing is reddit is not the right place to get help and i need a friend but it seems i cant get any from my friends , even my other friend the guy i used to sit with in all middle-high school he has drifted apart , talking more with other of his friends doing other stuff etc , that one time i needed to talk to him he said i ll call you in a while , waitied 1 and a half hour then asked him why he didnt call he said he forgot (i think) , feelsbadmananyway i dont think i m gonna keep editing this i ranted enough , gonna leave the post up for a day or so in case anyone wants to add anything then taking it down -Tuesday 3/11/2020 23:58

Terminator: Dark Fate review
Okay, I just got finished watching the movie. Here are my thoughts:
Short review: It’s definitely one of the better post-T2 sequels but it still feels like an unnecessary entry in the series. It gets a letter grade of C / C+.
Long review:
PROS
1) Gabriel Luna as the Rev-9. Easily one of the better villain Terminators in the series, arguably the best. He was absolutely menacing and Luna was able to pull off the machine-like personality without it coming off as cheesy. If I had to pick who among the cast really shined, it’d be Luna.
2) Arnold Schwarzenegger as Carl. Okay, I love the idea of a Terminator finding new purpose and integrating with humanity. That’s the whole point of the series, it’s about machines blending in with mankind. Carl takes that concept and goes in a different direction with it. That said, WHY COULDN’T THIS MOVIE BE ABOUT CARL? I’d honestly love for a whole Terminator movie about what happens to a Terminator after it completed its mission. I’ll just say it now, the Carl subplot was far more interesting than the main storyline.
3) Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. Not much to say here, Linda killed it. It was nice to see Sarah as this brooding, aging anti-hero. She reminded me of Hugh Jackman’s performance in Logan. I was actually surprised that the movie didn’t give as much for Linda to do as I thought they would have. She was definitely in more of a supporting role compared to her roles in T1 and T2.
4) Mackenzie Davis as Grace. I mean, I should be more critical of this character since Grace is just Kyle Reese 2.0 (more on this later) but the movie did make Grace a distinct enough character to stand on her own. Plus, I liked that the movie brought back the concept of the human-robot hybrid. True, this was just an excuse to have Grace fight toe-to-toe with the Rev-9 and to introduce a deus ex machina at the end of the movie instead of exploring concepts of humanity and machines/artificial intelligence but still, I liked Grace’s character.
5) Action scenes are fantastic. The action highlight would have to go to Gabriel Luna’s Rev-9 doing battle with the border patrol.
6) This is a minor pro but I love when the Terminator series gives us glimpses of Judgment Day. So although it was short, I did like Grace’s flashback.
CONS
1) The character of Dani Ramos. Now, I just wanna say, I really tried to like her character. But I’m sorry, I cannot. They literally just copy and pasted John Connor’s role in the story to Dani. That’s not creative, that’s lazy and uninspired. It doesn’t help that Dani herself is a flat, two-dimensional character. Credit to Natalia Reyes for giving an excellent performance but how her character was written was crap.
2) Legion. Like the Dani Ramos/John Connor situation, they just copy and pasted Skynet’s role in the story to Legion. Seriously, there’s nothing to really differentiate Skynet from Legion aside from the fact that Legion uses “Rev” for their Terminators. Also, the Rev models are...darker? And they don’t have a full head? Look, if you’re going to replace your main villain faction with this new one, give us something new. Or at least, take the story in a different direction.
3) In fact, just writing about my problems with Dani and Legion leads me to my main problem with Dark Fate. It doesn’t take the series anywhere new, to the point that I’m not sure why this movie even exists. Say what you will about Rise of the Machines, Salvation, and Genisys, at least those movies tried to introduce a new element to the series, or tried approaching the series from a different angle. For Dark Fate, the story is just a copy of Terminators 1 and 2, with the human-robot hybrid subplot from 4 and 5, and the T-1000/T-800 hybrid concept from 3. Don’t even start with the “but the new leader is Dani and the new villain is Legion” argument, you can just switch them out with John Connor and Skynet.
4) Pacing was atrocious. Movie started off fast-paced and intense but didn’t allow the audience to fully take the story in. Then, by the third act, the movie just sorta trudges along. The movie was only 128 minutes long but it felt like I was in the theater for three hours. Somehow, “Avengers: Endgame”, which actually was 3 hours long, didn’t feel as bloated.
5) Because the writing and pacing was off, the movie didn’t really give the characters a chance to just sit and talk. We get a few of these scenes here and there but they don’t stick. Most of the time, the slow-paced scenes are just used to give out exposition. It honestly feels like no one on the Dark Fate creative team watched the first Terminator movie, even though James Cameron is directly involved with this movie.
6) Look, I personally don’t have a problem with killing off John Connor. It’s an interesting idea that could take the series to a different direction. But his death didn’t do anything to the story. All that happened was, we got a new John Connor and a new Skynet. If that’s the case, then what was the point of killing him off in the first place? For shock value? That’s pretty damn cheap.
SIDE NOTE
If the story is going to revolve around protecting Dani, at least take the story in a different direction. Make her distinct from John Connor. For example, let’s say in the original future, she grows up to become a scientist and invents the Legion program as a way of destroying Skynet (the concept of using a virus to battle a virus). The Rev-9 was then sent by Skynet to kill her as she’s just as responsible for Skynet’s downfall. However, due to John and Sarah making sure Skynet doesn’t exist in T2, the future changes to Dani still creating Legion but to profit off of the arms race. Legion becomes sentient and, without Skynet as its enemy, it becomes the new Skynet.
So, with Grace being from the future where Legion is used for good, she believes that Dani is still a savior, unaware that Dani is responsible for the coming apocalypse. Thus we get a role reversal, with the Rev-9′s mission to kill Dani could potentially save humanity while Grace’s mission to keep her alive will result in Judgment Day. Both Grace and the Rev-9 are unaware that their missions will have the opposite effect.
That’s what I mean by change the story up. Don’t just repeat the story of the first three movies.

how about kyman with the prompt "do it, i dare you"?
Okay, I just want to apologize to @lochnessmonster for taking so long to post this prompt. Work has been a pain in the ass and I wanted to make this oneshot really good one. And it is! So I hope you enjoy this 2k+ ‘ficlet’! Heads up, this story has a lot of saliva references and Butters torture. I also made this one-sided K2, whoops, lmao.
~x~
“Do it, I dare you.”
Cartman said it so provokingly after Kyle let out a ’what?’ after hearing the brunette’s proposal. No, not that kind of proposal.
Cartman dared Kyle to kiss Kenny. On the lips.
While the blond was sitting right next to him. In front of everyone in the room.
“Okay. This is unexpected,” Stan retorted.
And he was right. In the past two hours, the teenagers were having a normal sleepover at Stan’s household (which had a severe lack of two parental figures since forever, resulting in underaged drinking on Stan’s part); and in the past thirty-five minutes Kyle wanted to play 'truth or dare’ and since then the other boys had done the most absurd tasks.
Stan was given a wet willy by Craig’s middle finger.
Craig confessed he would still pee on the bed at the tender age of fifteen (Stan quickly left and came back from the bathroom and dropped a bucket of cleaning utensils waiting for him in the morning).
Cartman had to shove ice cubes inside his sleep pants and let it melt on his own sleeping bag.
Kenny had to impersonate a police officer while prank-calling Darryl Weathers (the boys later found out that the crazy man had recently went skinny-dipping at Stark’s Pond right after drunk driving and nearly ran over an unidentified child).
The other blond had it the worst. Butters had to find any undergarments Shelly left in her old room and wear them on his head. He could only find a worn out pair of brief panties. And to add fuel to the fire, he had to let his friends take pictures of him and share them with their friends… and his father.
Fast forward to the present, and all of the aforementioned highlights would’ve been better for Kyle. Hell, sticking a twig inside his dick sounded much less humiliating than kissing his friend. And that says a lot.
Kyle blinked his eyes, still blindsided from Cartman’s request. “No, I’m sorry, did you just-”
“God, Kyle, do I have to repeat myself? I dare you to kiss Kenny!”
“I-I change my mind! Truth!”
“Nuh-uh,” said Cartman, wagging his finger. “You can’t change a truth or dare. Ain’t that right Craig?”
The dark-haired teen cleared his dry throat, trying to maintain his composure. “Y-you did came up with that rule yourself, Kyle.”
“See? Told ya."
Kyle internally cursed at himself. Why did he insist on making every game so challenging? "I am not kissing him, Eric.”
“You have to. It’s a dare,” Cartman sneered.
“Why not dare Stan? Or Butters? Hell, even Craig seems more willing to do this!”
“Dude! No!”
“I have a boyfriend, asswipe.”
“And I still have my dignity, thank you very much,” Butters remarked ironically, adjusting the waistband of his newly given headwear.
Two seconds later a small jingle left Craig’s phone, signaling the notifications he earned. As he checked his phone he snickered.
“What’s so funny?”
“Your picture got over a thousand likes on my Instagram, dude,” he even replied to one of the comments, “Why yes, those are menstrual stains.”
“A thousand?!” Butters shouted in agony, his face became sweating and his pupils wander around the room but nothing made him calm yet. “Oh God, is Charlotte going to see this?! I need to come up with a good dare, and quick!”
“Shut up, you guys!” the impatient Cartman interjected, with his head turning towards Craig and Butters.
“Alright, let’s get on with it, people,” he continued, snapping his fingers directly at his other two friends.
The older teen huffed, arms crossed as a form of protest. He wasn’t about to hear it.
“Kyle,” the taller boy leaned just a little closer, his tone low and browbeat, “your ass was going on and on and on about wanting to smooch a guy, and now’s your chance.”
Kyle’s eyes snapped back open, clearly outraged that Cartman would bring this up. He admitted to his friends he was questioning his sexuality; wondering if he liked boys as much as he liked girls. That was several months ago, and since then he would continue living his life with nary a definite conclusion. He should’ve known the taller boy would bring up personal information for his own gain.
“I didn’t know you’re bi-curious, too!” Butters beamed.
“Mhmm,” Cartman hummed. “And don’t act like you two haven’t done anything gay before. I haven’t forgotten the whole 'ookie mouth’ thing.”
“Ookie mouth?” Butters repeated, raising an eyebrow.
“We were eight!” exclaimed Kyle.
“And painfully inexperienced,” Kenny added with a hint of disappointment, earning him a glare from his former playmate.
“And now…” Cartman raised his two index fingers towards his chest and brought his digits together, “…you two can finally share each other’s saliva properly,” he punctuated his sentence by closing his hands together.
“Oh, dear God,” Kyle groaned, covering his face in embitterment.
“You guys had to share saliva?” Butters gave off a mischievous look, his thumb and index finger on his chin. “Hmm.”
“Don’t even think about it, Butters,” remarked Stan.
“Why are you doing this to me? I don’t even like Kenny like that.”
“I saw the way you looked at him the other day. You were so focused on that sexy face of his, huh? You even smiled at him!”
“I was helping him study for our Final, you idiot.”
“It doesn’t matter. You could’ve said no. But something inside you said otherwise.”
“Eric, for the last time, I am not doing this. You better find something else for me to do.”
“Dude,” Kenny responded, his hand landing on Kyle’s shoulder. “let’s just get this over with.”
“You’re going along with this,” the frustrated teen assumed in a deadpan tone.
“Y'all know I never back down from a challenge,” said the smug boy, showing off a sincere grin.  “And compared to the other shit we’ve done tonight, Fatass is practically being nice to us. Besides, It’s not like he’s asking for a full-blown make out session.”
Kyle thought about this long and slow, and he snarled at Cartman. The brunette just raised an eyebrow, that shit-eating grin still plastered on his face. Kyle pursed his lips together, and finally gave up.
“Just a peck.”
Kenny nodded in agreement.
“Soooo?” Cartman was lying on his stomach, his feet in the air, and not caring for the remnant wet spot from his own dare. “Who’s gonna make the first move?”
Stan let out a forced cough and took another sip out of his can.
“Rock, paper, scissors?” Kyle suggested abruptly.
Each faced their open palms towards each other before placing their fists on top. When they drew the first time, they both had scissors.
“Best two out of three.”
They drew again, they chose rock.
They drew again, they chose scissors.
They drew again, they chose paper.
“How are you guys doing that?” Stan questioned.
And they drew again and again and again, but continue to reveal the same illusive weapon.
“Jesus Christ!” Cartman yelled, reaching towards the work desk and quickly found what he needed.  “Here!” A dime in front of Kenny’s face, the light from the ceiling causing the coin to glow in front of Kenny’s face. “Just flip a coin.”
“I-I call tails,” Kyle blurted out, just as the blond snatched the shiny object.
Kenny flipped the coin and caught it when it fell on the back of his palm. It landed on tails.
Kyle really wished he had some of Stan’s beer.
“Alright Kyle, time to kiss yo’ man!” Cartman taunted. He was practically bouncing from excitement, and it wasn’t just from the ice cubes.
The redhead said nothing and instead sat still, taking the time to stay calm before he could look at his chosen participant.
“Look Kyle, we don’t have to-” suddenly Kyle placed a finger on the other boy’s lips, signaling him to stop.
“Why are changing your mind now? I thought you said you’d never back down from a challenge.”
Kenny was taken aback from his friend’s sudden change of inclination. He opened his mouth trying to find the right words, but the other teen beat him to it. “Come here.”
Kenny’s cheeks became redder and hotter as Kyle’s cold hands took hold of them.
’If Fatass wants a show, I’ll give him a show’, the redhead thought.
Kyle took a deep breath before pressing his lips onto Kenny’s. He assumed the blond’s lips would be dry and chapped from the cold weather but instead they were soft and moist, but not from his own spit. Cartman must’ve had a play in this, because Kenny was wearing cherry flavored chapstick; the only person who liked that flavor was Cartman himself. He felt Kenny loosen up and give in to the passive kiss. Keeping his eyes shut, he let his hands wander at Kenny’s back - one hand gently grabbing strands of unkempt hair while the other stopped at his neck - pulling the other boy further onto him.
“Uh… guys?” said Stan, finally speaking up, but his voice quickly became white noise. Craig gestured at the other boy, placing a finger on his lips, as he was quietly recording what’s left of this unforgettable dare.
Kyle captured his lips again, and again, and again, portraying himself as some touch-starved virgin; he could’ve sworn he felt Kenny’s mouth curve into a smile.
“Guys, you can stop now. Guys!”
“Welp, it’s a good thing I brought these,” Craig used his free hand to reach into his back pocket and a short pack of condoms fell on the floor.
“Craig!”
Thankfully for Stan, Kyle broke the kiss before this oneshot exceeds its PG-13 rating. When he opened his eyes again, he was met with a blankly inscrutable Kenny, his fingers lightly brushing his lips. Kyle’s eyes searched around the room, and everyone remained speechless.
Stan ran a hand onto his raven-colored hair, clearly distressed of what he had just witnessed. “Holy shit, dude.”
Cartman blinked, as if he knew what he was going to say but couldn’t, and soon suppressed giggles evolve into raucous laughter. He was literally rolling on the floor as he does so, hardly attempting to regain his posture.
“Oh my - oh my God,” Cartman wiped his eyes as he tried to breathe. “You guys really did it!”
“Yeah!” Butters chimed in. “How embarrassing!” His snickering ceased as a buzz from his phone went off. He wasn’t too happy with his text.
“Oh jeez. My dad saw the pictures,” he bowed his head in shame. “He says I’ll be grounded when I get home.”
Kyle let out a long sigh. “I’m gonna rinse my mouth, now.”
And just like that, he promptly excused himself from the bedroom.
Everyone remained silent until Craig broke the ice. It was his turn after all. “Butters, truth or dare?”
~x~
After he was done using the bathroom, Kyle decided to get a bottle of soda to help wash down the aftertaste of Kenny’s mouth. When he took it from the refrigerator, Cartman was already stepping into the kitchen.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Kyle was pouring his drink into a plastic cup.
“My plan worked, didn’t it?” The brunette smirked.
Kyle pulled away from his own cup as the words processed through his head. “I knew it.”
“Don’t be like that, Kyle.” Cartman replied, hoping his own words would reassure the other boy. “No one will be able to recognize… this thing between us. Everyone will think you and Kenny have a thing.”
“Is that why you invited Craig and Butters? Just so they can have something to gossip?”
“Well, it’s hard for anyone believe anything Butters says out of his mouth,” the brunette sat next to the shorter guy, grabbing the bottle. “But with Craig, it’s nearly impossible to take no for an answer. I also wanted to see Butters make an ass out of himself tonight.”
Cartman removed the bottle cap; he was about to himself out before Kyle firmly grabbed his wrist.
“You’re not going to drink off the bottle, are you?”
“You took the last cup.”
“That doesn’t mean you can taint the soda with your backwash.”
The boy next to him scoffed. “Can I at least take a sip from your cup?”
Cartman was given the cup, and in return he gave Kyle a ludic stroke on his chin.
“Thanks, babe.”
Kyle rolled his eyes and smiled. He made sure he would get his cup back before Cartman could leave him with a single drop.
“I’m glad this whole thing is taken care of,” Cartman replied.
“There are better ways to keep our relationship a secret, dude,” said Kyle.
“Don’t worry,” Cartman nudged his arm. “This whole fiasco will die down in less than two months…maybe,” he stated his remark like it was supposed to make his boyfriend feel better. “…And now that Kenny’s got his wish he’ll stop vexing me.”
'His wish…’ it didn’t take Kyle to figure that one out on his own. “Kenny’s crushing on me, isn’t he?”
“What do you think?”
This all made perfect sense now.
“Cartman? Truth or dare?”
“Truth?”
“You’re jealous, aren’t you?”
Cartman didn’t say anything… yet. Kyle had already knew the answer. He just wanted to hear him say it.
“Of the kiss? Of Kenny liking me? You thought that he was going to steal me away from you?"
The brunette nodded his head but eventually answered the question, so faintly that Kyle could barely listen to it. He didn’t have to worry, though; because it was enough to earn him a tender kiss from his boyfriend. Unlike his last encounter, the redhead took his time on this particular person; the same person who had made him feel all types of ways but still managed to steal his heart. Kyle didn’t remove his hands when he parted ways, and instead they slid onto broad shoulders. He would never say it out loud, but kissing Kenny wasn’t as bad as he thought. However, the blond could never compete with the juxtaposition of silkier, shaved skin and softer, chestnut hair and chubbier cheeks and straightened, white teeth and the scent of coconut body wash, the list goes on and on. No one could ever take his place.
Their trance was broken when they heard a yell from upstairs.
"Jesus, Craig, there’s spit in my eye!”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Butters!”
Kyle leered at Cartman when he started cackling, only to join in mere seconds later.
“C'mon, you gaywad…” Kyle punched him playfully, “before they catch us.”
The best come back the other boy could come up with was, “Likewise, buttmunch.”
Cartman watched his boyfriend wander back towards the stairs before following suit.
