Just a list of things from growing up in the 90s about media. Things that u don't really see anymore in cartoons or TV. Feel free to add more

Quicksand: growing up every adventure show I watched had some form of quicksand show up and be the deadliest thing ever. Doesn't really appear anymore, at least not in the capacity that it once did

Atlantis and ancient egypt: both of these where focused a lot on in 90s early 2000s media. Every cartoon seemed to have an episode on one if these, or whole series about them. Ex mummies alive, Stargate, gargoyles, Aladdin, prince of egypt, the mummy, real adventures of Johnny quest

Reading and recycling is cool: I completely understand why this fell out of favor, but 90s shows had at least one ep focusing on either or both of these lessons. Ill also admit that they got me because i try to recycle and live to read. Ex wishbone, gargoyles, captain planet, magic tree house

King Arthur stuff: not as much as ancient egypt, but I remember there was tons of king Arthur stuff growing up either about it or having some hints to it. Ex kid in king Arthur's court, gargoyles, Babylon 5, Kids of the Round Court, Magic tree house

Animal stories, animals as people: look I'm not dumb, I know there is still a lot of furry stuff and the anthropomorphic animal stories of the 90s woke a lot of young furries, but it's more of an adult scene today than the kids stuff in the 90's or so. Probably because the kids that grew up with the stuff grew up and bingo bongo. There's still stuff for kids, but it's lessened quite a bit compared to the 90s where there were a lot of shows featuring animal protagonists, either as animals or anthropomorphized: ex Rats of Nimh, Redwall, Bucky o'hare, Disney's Robin Hood, the lion king, Looney Tunes (more Tiny Tunes given the time, but also Space Jam), Alvin and the chipmunks

Disney series based on their animated movies: Obviously I know why this isn't done as much, it's harder to make money off of it compared to the 90's. But they still do this, with Rapunzel and Big Hero 6, it's just not done as much. Compare to the 90's early 2000's where there was Aladdin, Hercules, Timon and Pumba, the little Mermaid. And there were even cross overs between them sometimes.

Martial Arts movies/tv shows: This I know I'm a bit dated on, but there were a lot of martial arts movies growing up, I know most were probably earlier than the 90's but martial arts was just big when I was a kid. I did martial arts for years, a lot of kids did karate even if they stopped after a few sessions, studios popped up everywhere and then closed a few years later. And this was before UFC became big

Mecha, Magical Girl, Super Sentai animes and other media: Again, this isn't a dead genre, especially the later two, but the latter two also tend to be deconstructions or even spoofs of the magical girl and Super Sentai Genre. But in the 90's there were tons of Mecha animes, over half a dozen attempts for America to capitalize on super Sentai/Power Rangers fame. It was easy to capitalize on these genre's of shows because you tended to need several main characters to fill out your roster, which meant the studios could sell toys of them easily, advertising to buy the whole set.

Bullet proof vests: I don't really know why these were a thing so often in 90's media, but they were. of course they didn't work like real bullet proof vests which will still hurt when struck. When I was a kid it seemed like every time there was a bullet proof vest in a show it was basically a magic force field.

Holiday specials: I know that shows and cartoons still have holiday episodes, but it seemed to be such a bigger thing when I was growing up. Nick would have months where they would air Halloween episodes all October and each of their shows from Catdog, Rugrats, to Rocket Power would air one of their episodes, often one of many. Christmas you couldn't escape December when every cartoon would have a Christmas special.

Variety shows: I don't know how to properly describe these types of shows, but there were a lot of Cartoons that didn't have a consistent through line, and they were a bunch of 5 or so minute clips of several different shows or different characters in situations. Sometimes it would fit a theme, other times it would be random, or perhaps random to my kid brain. Ex Tiny Tunes, Histeria, Kablam, Animaniacs

For the record, I am not an idiot, I know why many of these things fell out of fashion. A lot of time it isn't a mystery, just the studios trying to cash in on something popular so they flooded the market with what they saw as the bandwagon to make them money. Once that money dried up or they were wasting more trying to copy and emulate, so did the properties. I also want to be clear that I'm not missing these things, not all of them, I am only pointing these things out as a product of the time I grew up in

I am also aware that these are not strictly the 90's and 2000's things, but I saw them growing up and they molded me and I was born in 91. It was a different time because it was before the internet became big and the only way you could interact with media was either from watching on TV, usually live or catching reruns whenever they aired, or renting movies from the Video store. For me it wasn't even block buster most of the time, it was my local video store when that was a thing. All movies came out when I watched them because I was a kid and that's how my brain worked.

Feel free to add more stuff if only for Nostalgia. I probably will be as well

Emperor’s Daughter Ch. 14

Chapter 1

Chapter 13

Callie’s first birthday comes, and Natalie comes back up. A little stuffed Apollo doll in her hands as she walks in and gives it to Callie. Callie smiles and starts giggling hugging the doll tightly in her hands. Silena hugs tightly to Johnny, who turns up and gives Callie a little rattle. That she immediately starts to shake as hard as she can. Silena gives her daughter a book on Greek mythologies. A children’s book with lots of pictures. Brenda gives her younger sister a kiss. “I lub you” She says. “I’ll take care of you” They have cake and ice cream and Brenda makes a mess all over her self. At the end of the party Johnny and Silena share a long heartfelt kiss. “I can’t wait to call you and the kids mine?” Silena smiles. --- 2 months later it’s Brenda’s Birthday. “Your kids have their birthday’s way to close together” Natalie complains when she walks through the door. “It feels I was just here!” Her belly is just starting to show she’s now in her third month. “Yeah sorry I’ll plan my births a little better next time” Silena says. “Hush Cass, you know what I meant” Natalie says with a shrug. “You know I love you.” “Auntie Natalie!” Brenda cries running up to give her daughter a hug. “You’re here!” “Yes, I am, and how old are you now princess?” “I’m Four!” Brenda says holding up four fingers. “Momma says I’ll be starting kindergarten in a year! I’m just in preschool now” She says. “Little Callie is just in daycare, she’s too little to go to preschool like me!” She says proudly. Brenda is wearing her nicest jeans with a green sweater. In her arms is the Tyr doll she’s had since she was two, it’s obvious it’s been through some rough times. There are patches all over it where Silena has had to sow it back together. “Do you want to show Natalie your doll?” Silena asks softly. “It’s the Norse god Tyr” She says. “Momma reads me stories about him sometimes, she says it’s im-important, that I know Norse Mi-myth-Mythology.” Natalie kneels and gives Brenda a big squeezing hug. “And what’s your favorite” “When Thor has to wear a dress, so the giant man can marry him” She says with a laugh. “It’s so funny.” Natalie nods and gives Brenda a kiss on her head. “Can you show me where Callie is?” Brenda takes Natalie’s hand and leads her to the other room. “She deserves to know her roots” She says to Johnny. “Who knows? It could help her one day.” “I know” Johnny says. “But those myths can be a bit bloody” “I know, I’m going for the most kid friendly versions I can. Telling them in the most kid-friendly way I can, I plan to do the same for Callie when she get’s older.” “What did you get Brenda this year?” Johnny asks. “A collection of figurines, that range from wizards to hunters, to rogues. “With all the play fighting she likes to do I thought it would be something she likes.” She smiles up at him. “You?” “A collection of toy vehicles.” The party goes on, Natalie gives Brenda a toy Sleipner, Odin’s mighty steed, that has eight legs. Brenda immediately puts Tyr on it and starts pretending, she uses the other figurines in a made-up story she came up with in her mind. Using the toy cars and planes and vehicles as carnage in her destructive path. Callie takes one of the toys and tries to put them in her mouth, but Selina rips the car out of Callie’s hand and gives her the rattle Johnny gave her two months before. “When’s the wedding?” “In ten months” “I should be fine” Natalie says. “I can find someone else” “Please, I’ve known you longer then anyone here, it has to be me, after all the crap you’ve been through, I want to be apart of the biggest night of your life.” “I think the birth of my two kids trumps that, besides travelling with a baby is difficult…” “I’ll have Fred with me” “Yeah speaking of Fred…” “I can do this Cassie, please have some faith in me?” “Ok, I do, I’m sorry” She says raising her hands in surrender. “I’m sorry.” “Yeah you better be” Natalie gives her a hug goodbye. “See you at the wedding.” “By!”   --- Planning a wedding hurts her head. Johnny is sitting on the floor with his own wooden sword pretending to have a sword fight with Brenda. While she looks through different venues for the wedding reception. “Can’t decide on a venue, I want to at least have it cut down to my final ten before I go to bed tonight” “How many people are we inviting.” “Natalie” She says. “Since she’s my maid of honor. I think she’s bringing Fredrick and Annabeth as her +2, apparently Fredrick’s been acting a bit morose.” She says with a roll of her eyes.   “Natalie is pregnant with the Norse demigod?” Johnny asks pretending to dodge Brenda’s attack. “Annabeth the Greek demigod?” “Yes” She says.  “Anyway that’s 3 technically four if Magnus is born before the wedding” “There are my parents” Johnny said lunging slowly his wooden sword hitting Brenda’s own sword. “That’s six, plus JD and his wife that’s 8” “My kids, that’s ten.” “Isn’t Brenda in the wedding, she’s the flower girl” “Yeah speaking of, are you going to have a ring bearer?” “I have a little nephew, I wanted to ask” “That’s 11 plus his parents that’s 13” “My grand parents that’s 15” “You’re friends from the Nome, sorry the entire Nome so that’s another 20, so… 35” “I have a few friends outside the Nome too, people I met in college, and people I met at work.” He says, and Brenda stabs him in the side. He groans and pretends to die to Brenda and her mother’s amusement.   Johnny works at as a DJ at the local bar, and, occasionally does gigs at local clubs with a few of his buddies in the House of Life. He plays acoustic guitar and sings in the band. It does not pay much, but it pays enough.   “Should have thought to make friends while I was in the orchestra, I could totally invite a few over.” She says with a sigh. “My side is going to look so empty” she says forlorn. Johnny jumps up and picks and Brenda who squeals in delight. “We’ll divide wedding differently so there are people on both sides” He says kissing her forehead. “Why did my family have to be a bunch of jerks?” “I’m not marrying your entire family, I’m marrying you and if your family couldn’t see the amazing woman you are then that’s their problem” “That one looks pretty” Johnny says picking out a venue. The room is cream colored and has a maximum of 100 people. “I have some friends from when I studied in Egypt, and I know Desjardin is going to be pissed if I don’t invite him. An invitation to Iskandar couldn’t hurt” She feels uneasy, while Johnny’s parents accepted her with open arms, (However hesitant they may have been at first” And the rest of Texas has accepted the fact that she has roman blood and two demigod kids she’s not entirely sure the rest of Egypt would be so accommodating. “Stop it, Iskandar is not as closed minded as you fear he is, Desjardin is not going to dare go against the chief lector and literally everyone else does not matter.” Johnny says kissing her on the for head. “Is mommy ok?” Brenda asks. She smiles at her daughter. “Yeah, daddy and I are just figuring things out for the wedding?” “Is that when Daddy will become my real daddy?” She says her eyes lighting up. Silena laughs and nods her head. “Yes, Brenda that’s exactly what that means.” --- The months pass, Silena agonizes over every choice. Where to honeymoon, if they should honeymoon, what to serve, where to host the actual wedding, what kind of wedding to have wedding. Suddenly the wedding is here, and she’s scared. Not that she’s making a mistake marrying Johnny but that something will go wrong. She’s nervous and anxious. “Ready?” Natalie asks. She’s in a Lilac dress. “Where’s your son?” She asks. The boy is now five months old. IT’s now June, Callie’s birthday is coming soon, she’ll be two. She thinks of how Callie has already started talking, can sit up, is already eating full foods. And Brenda is starting kindergarten soon. She remembers Johnny playing with her. She remembers Johnny making funny faces at Callie, making her laugh. She smiles. Yes. Marrying Johnny was right. She has no qualms about doing this. “He’s with Fredrick, Sitting with Annabeth in the front row.” “It was nice of Johnny to open a portal, so you could get here easily.” “Yes, it was,” Natalie acknowledges. “We really shouldn’t keep him waiting, forcing him to wait any longer to see the woman he loves looking lovely in that wide wedding dress.” The dress is white, her sleeves start off the shoulder. A string of pearls dangles from her neck. It belongs to Natalie. She’s wearing her bracelet that can transform into a shield. In her hair is her hair clip that can transform into a sword is fastened to her hair. Blue stones are glued to it. Her bouquet is filled with daisies, the blue lotus, roses, and lilies. She’s clutching them tightly and Natalie smiles and Silena turns and follows Natalie out the door. --- The wedding goes by in a blur. She spends the entire wedding eager for it to be over, so she can finally call Johnny her husband. They recite their vows. There the simple traditional vows that most people op to say. Silena is not as good with words as she is with music, and nothing she could say could beat the vows that have been there for several generations. She speaks calmly and surely giving her vow that she will love and cherish and love him for the rest of his life and Johnny is promising the same. She can feel her heart fluttering when Johnny takes her hand and slips the golden wedding band on her ring finger. “With this ring, I thee wed” He says softly. She places the wedding ring on his finger. “With this ring, I thee wed” She echoes him. Then the reverend announces. “I now pronounce you man and wife, you may now kiss the bride.” Johnny places a hand on her waist pulls her close and kisses her so deeply that she loses her breath for a moment. --- The reception afterwards is hectic. She stands outside in the hot sun receiving guests many whom she doesn’t know. Fredrick looks like a dear caught in headlights as he walks up with Annabeth. (Magnus Chase is in Natalie’s hands, under the shade of a tree.) Brenda is standing beside Selina shaking hands with everyone that comes by. Callie is already inside with her step-grandparents. Brenda wanted to stay with Johnny and Brenda since she’s a flower girl. But Callie was still a baby, and though she is a demigod she didn’t want her to be overheated so she asked Johnny’s parents to take Callie inside. “Brenda if he gets too hot, you tell me immediately ok?” She says as she shakes hands with an elderly man and a man with dark skin and black hair walked up to them. “Chief Lector Iskandar” Johnny says to the old man. “I’m so glad you could make it.” Iskandar is smiling. “There was no way I could miss a wedding such as this.” Iskandar says, his voice has a heavy Egyptian accent. Iskandar smiles at Selina. “I hope you are happy here” He says. “A girl with a burden as yours deserves the chance to have it shared.” “I would not wish my burdens on anyone Chief Lector” She says respectfully. “But I thank you.” “Have you met Michel Desjardins?” He asks motioning to the man beside him. Desjardin gaze is cold and uncaring. Selina can’t help but shrink under his gaze. Johnny holds her hand. Brenda clues in immediately and cuts in. “Stop making mommy scared” Brenda says, and she stomps hard on Desjardins foot. Desjardin gasps in pain and clasps his foot. “Brenda!” Selina cries picking Brenda up. “Say your sorry” “He was scaring you!” Brenda cries. “Never the less he did not deserve that, say your sorry” Brenda pouted. “I’m sorry” She forces out. “I want to go inside now” “Go” Natalie stands in. “It’s getting to hot, I’ll take her to her step-grandparents” Natalie says. “I’m not a baby” Brenda pouts she says stomping inside. “Nice child” Desjardin says sarcastically. “She seems to really care about her mother, it is a wonderful thing” Iskandar cuts in. “That should be acknowledged even if her show of her loyalty was a little to forward.” “She’s never done something like that before” Selina says. “Hmm” Desjardin says before he walks in with Iskandar beside him. --- “So, you’re Roman” Desjardins says. “A fact I hate more then you do.” She assures Desjardins. She’s not surprised he knows she hadn’t kept it a secret after she had told Johnny. She had even told Johnny to tell any one ‘who should be made aware.’ The entire Texan Nome new, as did Iskandar and Desjardin. But other then being made aware to the other Nomes that other mythologies are indeed real. Not much else was made aware of her background and her kids background. “Who already as two kids from two different mythologies, must be the Roman conquering blood in you.” “Get to the point” She says to him annoyed. “Betray the House of Life and you will answer to me.” “I betray the house of life, I’ll hand you my own sword.” She says. “Cassie!” Natalie calls running out to her. “Come on, what is the point of giving a speech to the bride and groom, if the bride isn’t there” She gives Desjardin a look. “You should sit too” “Thank you” She whispers once she’s out of Desjardins sight. “No worries” Natalie says. “Take a seat by your husband.” --- “So as most of you know, I am the brides best and only friend.” Natalie turned and stuck her tongue out at Selina, who returned the gesture. “I met her when she lived in Boston, already pregnant with little Brenda, she would stand out in rain and snow, playing her violin, making as much money as she could, trying to support herself. She endured all the glares and disgusted looks she got as her baby grew within her, and she never rose to the insults. She continued to play. Then after Brenda was born, I would take care of her, or my mom and dad would, ‘G-d bless their souls.” She says, Selina’s eyes started to tear up. “She tried to push me away, scared of what would happen if I got to close, so she told me her secret, told me that her father abused her, her first love was killed in front of her, her mother was killed, and still she found reason get up in the morning. I can still see it, she thinks she’s a coward for running away, but honestly to me… she’s the strongest woman I know.” Silena bit her lip. “Then she got a job as a violinist in an orchestra in New York, and met Callie’s father, and I thought, maybe she had nothing to worry about, maybe she’d finally be happy, she could stop worrying, she could be happy.” “I only wish I could beat the crap out of the guy who broke up with her over a fight, no scratch that, I wish I could beat the crap out of both the guys who broke her heart. But She did not beg, she did not cry, she let them go, and moved on.” “When she met Johnny, I could hardly hope that maybe she would find happiness with you, oh she had met other guys, that weren’t fathers of her children, but it seemed the second she mentioned that she had two kids by two different fathers they would find a reason to walk away. I found it a good sign that Johnny did not walk away, I found it even better when he treated Brenda with respect. He was understanding and kind, and he made Silena’s face light up brighter then the sun, she was the happiest I had ever seen when he asked her to marry him. He loved Brenda and Callie like his own children.” I love her kids, Brenda is feisty, and loyal, and a joy to be around. And I cannot wait to see the little spitfire that Callie grows into. They are all treasures and I am so happy that they get to have a father to help raise them.” Natalie sighs. “I hope the best for you two, after everything you’ve been through, Silena Cassie Julia Claudia Romano Maglieri,” Silena’s eyes widened at the use of all her previous names. “You deserve only the best.” Silena stood and gave Natalie the biggest hug she could. --- After that there was a quick speech from the Best man JD who gave a short quip over how Natalie’s was far better then his mainly because Johnny didn’t have a tragic backstory. But reaffirmed sweet things like Johnny was happiest he’s ever been, and they deserved to be together. It was cake, and dancing, Johnny danced with his mother and though Silena could not dance with her own father she decided to instead dance with her eldest daughter. Brenda was clumsy, but she had fun being spun around by her mother. After the parent-child dance Johnny and Silena danced together. “I love you, Lena” He whispered to her. “Forever and for always” Silena gave Johnny a long kiss, oblivious to all the people watching. “As I love you, Jonathan.” --- Brenda and Callie had been arranged to stay with their now official step-grandparents while Johnny and Silena went on their honeymoon. They went to Egypt and had phone seeing the sights, the pyramids, and he took her to see the special tour of the Hall of Ages, in the first nome. She watched in surprise as she saw her wedding play right in front of her. Iskandar let them sleep together in the nome, and she met some of the newest recruits to learning Egyptian magic. They spent a week in Egypt seeing the sights, before they headed off to Rome. To see Silena’s past. She saw the ruins of the palaces still standing, she saw the colosseum, she heard things about her father a former emperor that made her nearly cry. She saw everything Rome had to offer, and after those two weeks the two of them returned back home. --- A year later she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She was surrounded by Natalie and her husband, and her two perfect kids. It had taken a long time to get to where she was going, but she finally felt happy and safe. “Kamilah O'Hare” She named her baby with a kiss to the baby’s forehead. “Little Ilah.”   Perhaps not everyone in the community likes her, perhaps they are a little distrustful of her, but so long as her family is ok, and they are like. Silena Cassie Julia Claudia Romano Magileri can handle just about anything that stands in her way. For the first time in a long time, she’s not just the emperor’s daughter. She’s a mother, a wife, a friend, a violinist, she’s strong, she smart, she is so deeply in love and is loved in return. And she wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

 The moonlight in Chicago is beautiful.

You landed at the Chicago O’Hare airport a little after 2 am. There wasn’t much time spent sightseeing, as Jeno was nervous of how far Seventeen’s connections could go. You rushed through the airport, getting into the car that Johnny specifically set up to take up to the house. Upon our arrival you quickly hurried into the house - catching the sight of security cameras above the front door - and checked out the house, seeing the nice decor and modern art work. It certainly looked more like a safe house than you would’ve liked, there were no remnants of Johnny in it, making it seem a lot more bleak to be in this house.

After checking out the rooms, we split up the rooms evenly. You got the master bedroom to yourself, Jeno staying in the bedroom connected to yours, asking you to make sure that you keep the door unlocked.

In case of emergencies.

The first night there was hard.

You first took a shower, allowing the lukewarm water to run over your body, looking at the stitches lining the jagged scar on your stomach. Running your hand gingerly over the stitches, feeling nauseous while you look at it. Looking away from your scar you quickly washed up and climbed out of the shower, cleaning your stitches and quickly slipping on pjs, a pair of shorts and  one of Johnny’s old hoodies that he slipped in while you were packing.

You laid down in the bed, pulling the blankets up to your chest and stared at the ceiling. Just willing for sleep to overtake you, but your thoughts quickly divulged in Dino, Mingyu, and Johnny.

How did Mingyu know where you were? Was he stalking you? How long was he stalking you before he attacked you? Why was Dino still after you? Even if you were a loose end, you hadn’t talked or seen eachother in years. Would Johnny be okay? Johnny was incredibly dangerous and smart, the reason he was so fit to lead the Neos. But would they be enough to get rid of Seventeen? You hope that Johnny doesn’t let any emotions override his senses. Johnny needs to kill Dino or this will never end.

Sitting up you looked around the dark room, the paintings lining the will just looking like black blobs. Climbing from under the covers you quietly opened the door, walking close to the walls to avoid any squeaky floor boards not wanting to wake any of the beds.

You remembered that Johnny had gotten groceries delivered, so you headed straight for the panty. A smile spread across your face as you looked at the strange assortment, knowing that Johnny purposefully got you and Dreamie's favorite snacks along with some miscellaneous food items. You opted out of eating Chenle’s favorite cookies, knowing that he would be upset if they disappeared the first night and made some hot cocoa instead. Hopefully the warm drink would help you go to sleep.

After making your hot cocoa you walked out into the fenced in backyard, the cold air actually waking you up a little more. Looking up you saw that the sky was clear, the moon shaped like a beautiful crescent. Stars twinkled all over the sky while a few flew by. You took a deep breath of the fresh air, feeling it fill your lungs before taking a sip of your drink.

“Johnny. Please keep everyone safe, including yourself. I need you here with me.” You closed your eyes, willing the universe to hear your prayer.

The sound of the back door squeaking open had you glance over your shoulder. Just in time to see Jisung peek his head, a shy smile on his lips. You motioned for him to come join you, and turned back around, feeling Jisung sitting down on the ground beside you.

“You okay?” You nodded your head, offering Jisung a sip of your drink that he gladly took, enjoying the feeling of the liquid warming his body from the inside out.

“Couldn’t sleep. Decided to come and enjoy some late night nature.” You took another sip of your drink, holding it in your mouth just savoring the flavor before swallowing. “Do you remember when you guys saved me? All those years ago.”

“Of course I do.”

“After you guys saved me I started having these awful nightmares, they were more reliving memories. Seeing Seventeen come near me, holding me down while they did whatever they wanted to me. They haunted me for up to a year after you guys rescued me,” You swallowed the lump that was steadily growing in your throat, Jisung placed his hand on my shoulder for comfort “ Johnny was always near me, just in case I had one so he could ‘protect’ in his words. One night I had a really bad night terror, Johnny actually had to wake me up from it. He brought me outside so that we could look at the stars, and told me as long as he was beside me I would be okay. I was such a pessimist I didn’t want to believe it, especially since back then we were only friends. So I asked him, 'What about when he wasn’t there?’ ” You placed your drink on the ground, pulling your knees up to your chest.

“Johnny told me that the moon would watch over me when he couldn’t be beside me. I knew it was childish, even back then when it was all I was holding on to. But a part of me also believed that. It just fills me with comfort now. I just hope that Johnny looks at the moon too, so that we’re both protected even though we’re apart.”

Jisung wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer to him. You snuggled into his chest, feeling comforted by the youngest just sitting and listening to you since he wasn’t the best with words.

“We’ll be back home soon. You just gotta trust them.” You wanted desperately to believe him, but a sick feeling was rising in your stomach. Maybe you shouldn’t have made hot chocolate. Patting your shoulder, Jisung started to stand up.

“Come on, you need to try and sleep.”  Sighing, you allowed Jisung to drag you to the kitchen, where you quickly rinsed out your cup and walked up the stairs, Jisung following behind you. As you put your hand on the doorknob to your room you called out to Jisung.

“Jisungie?”

“Hm.”

“You’ve grown up wise. I’m proud of you.” Even across the darkened hallway you could see Jisung’s cheeks redden as he sent you a quick nod before bursting into his room, closing the door quietly behind him. You couldn’t help but giggle as you opened your own room door, closing it behind you and laying down on your bed. The room felt a little less ominous, and the dread had lessened a lot.

It was easier to believe that everything would be okay.

....

It’s been a little over three months, and you’ve barely heard any news from the Neos. They would only send quick text that didn’t give out any information, but let us know that they were safe, to make sure that if our phones were hacked they wouldn’t have anything to use. Every precaution was taken to make sure all of you were safe.

Our first month here was dare you say fun. Groceries were delivered every two weeks, and when you wanted anything new you could just send a quick text to Doyoung or Taeil. Every week you would sit together in the living room and binge watch a new show on Netflix - if you could actually agree on something - or have a movie night.

After the first month all of you started to get tense. Still only getting the sparse texts from the Neos, none of them with any important updates. You tried to text Johnny, just quick texts to stay safe, and take care of himself. You only got terse responses, or left on open. By the second month you just stopped texting.

You knew this was meant to protect you; but why does it feel like a punishment?

You were sitting on the couch between Chenle and Jeno, having been forced out of your room. The boys had gotten uneasy seeing you lock yourself in the bedroom, depression starting to overcome you after the updates lessened. They forced you to freshen up before dragging you down to the living room, forcing you to have a movie night with them.

“Short stack.” You jump realizing that you had zoned out, the movie's credits were now playing. Concern painted all of their faces and you felt guilty, realizing you had caused this for all of them.

“Are you okay?”  You shook your head, not bothering to lie to Jaemin. Knowing that he could see you right through you. The Dreamies were your closest friends, they had been the ones to truly help get you out of your shell along with Johnny after they rescued you.

It’s now been seven months without the Neos. Seven months being quarantined in Chicago. Seven months missing two of our dreamies. Seven months without hearing updates, not knowing if they were safe. Only being able to hope that they were still alive.

Jeno pulled you into a hug, practically onto his lap after seeing how crestfallen you looked. “Everything will be okay. They’ll call us any day and tell us to come home. Just have to be patient.”

“You don’t fucking know that.” You pushed Jeno’s arms off of you and stood up. Your eyes burned but you refused to cry. Crying wouldn’t help the situation. You were just ready to go back home. To be back in Johnny’s arms. “We are all just fucking stranded here in Chicago. None of them have texted us in months. How much longer will we be fucking stuck in here?” Despite your fighting tears streamed down your face, you wiped them away with your hands, backing up as Jeno stood up to try and embrace you.

“I am so sick and fucking tired of being patient. When it get’s us fucking no where. I just want to go fucking home.” You dropped down to your knees, Renjun wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into his chest.

“They’re okay.”  Jisung spoke up from the armchair he was sitting in, a blanket wrapped around him. “I talked to Haechan.”

“Jisung.” Jeno’s tone was a warning, icy expression as he glared at Jisung. Were they hiding something? Jisung and Jeno only stared at each other , an unsaid threat hanging in the air, tension rising. Renjun pulled you back some, trying to protect you from whatever was happening.

“Jisung?” His eyes glanced over to yours, regret showing before they flitted back to Jeno’s. You looked around the room, only making eye contact with Chenle but he quickly glanced down. Everyone was focused on the silent stand down between our makeshift leader and the youngest.

“Seventeen’s dead.” Your heart flooded with relief but then anxiety as you realized that wasn’t the full truth. Jeno stood up quickly, rushing to get to Chenle but Jaemin grabbed him, holding him back while Jisung got in front of Chenle.

“What?” Your voice cut through some of the tension, wavering as you took in the news. Jaemin glanced at you while holding onto Jeno, while Chenle looked down at the ground, too ashamed to look at you. “What else are you hiding? Why wouldn’t they tell us that? Why wouldn’t you tell me?” Your voice cracked, causing Jeno to turn away, walking out of the room before stomping up the stairs, slamming his room door behind him. The tension faded away, leaving behind only sadness and regret.

“Johnny’s hurt,” You tensed in Renjun’s hold, trying to comprehend what he had just told you.

“Hurt?”

“He didn’t want us to tell you until he was healed, at least more than he currently is.”

“More? How bad was he hurt?” Johnny has never been too hurt to keep you away from him. How bad were his injuries if he didn’t even want you back?

“He almost died. Dino shot him multiple times. He couldn’t be treated properly at base. They had to send him to one of our hospitals.” If you weren’t already on the ground you would’ve collapsed.

Johnny was shot. His wounds were so severe that our best medics couldn’t treat him. Tears blurred your vision at the realization that’s why he hadn’t texted you. While you were so mad and hurt over him not messaging you he was fighting for his life.

“He had to have emergency surgery.” You let out a wail as you covered your face with your hands, hearing the boys whispering around you while Renjun tried to calm you.

The love of your life was injured. Fighting for his life because of your past mistakes. Johnny, who helped you while you were healing.  Protected you even while you only fighting yourself. You should’ve died all those years ago. Dino should’ve killed you instead of kidnapping you, at least then Johnny would be safe.

All because of you. You and your stupid fucking mistakes.

You will the universe to hear one last prayer.

You hope the moon will shine on you two again.

Well, villager hunting was not successful. There were apparently more steps in the process than we remembered. 😅 But we did get the campsite put up! And we have our 6th villager on the way!

We did some wild time travelling today. 🔁 I still need bamboo shoots, so I went back to Sunday to talk to the adorable Daisy Mae.

We got SOOO excited about going villager hunting! Devas and johnny1p came over to donate some tickets to the cause. (Love you guys! Thank you so much!) 🥰

So then we booped back to Monday and talked to Tom Nook (thinking we would be able to build a villager plot). He instead gave us the campsite bag and told us to get it set up. 😭

So we booped back to Saturday and set it up. Fast forward to Sunday... ⏩

Yay! We have a campsite! 🏕 But it doesn't have a camper...

Why, Tom, WHY?!?!?

*Deep sigh* Oh... our island is not beautiful enough... okay. Let's run around and pick up the weeds, sticks, and shells. You know what? Let's slap down a couple pieces of furniture and fossils too for good measure.

Fast forward back to present day (Monday). 🤞

Early Life

Jesse Custer was born to John Custer and Christina L'Angell. When he was toddler, his family was attacked by Jody and T.C., who worked for Christina's family. They were all kidnapped and taken to Angelville, the L'Angell's house. There, Marie L'angell, Christina's mother, ordered John to marry Christina, and said that they would raise Jesse as a man of God. She also threatened to kill them if they ever tried to leave. After a while, John Custer decided to try and escape. Jody and T.C. caught them before they were two miles away. John Custer was executed, and Jesse decided he would never cry again. After John died, Christina was never the same. She eventually tried to escape, but was shot by Jody and presumed dead. With both of his parents gone, Jesse was left in the care of Marie L'Angell. When Jesse was much older, he escaped, and started working his way toward Texas.

Return to Angelville

Jesse met Tulip O'Hare, and the two fell in love. Months later, they were on a park bench in Northern Texas, and Jesse announced that he was taking her to California. She went to buy him a beer, and once she was gone, Jody and T.C. sat down on either side of him, and announced that they were taking him back to Angelville. They told him that they would kill Tulip if he resisted.

Becoming Preacher

With no fight left in him, Jesse turned to God, which was what Marie L'Angell had been waiting for. She pulled some strings and got him a church in Annville, and he was appointed Preacher. He eventually tired of life there, and started drinking copious amounts of alcohol. One night, he decided he was fed up with the people of Annville, and told them so the next morning. He was beat up, and he woke up the next day with intent to preach about forgiveness. However, before he could give his sermon, Jesse merged with Genesis, a creature who had escaped from Heaven, and gained the ability to force people to do anything. This merging resulted in an explosion that killed everyone in Annville but Jesse.

The Search for God

After the Annville incident, the police searched for whoever caused the explosion. Angels from Heaven had hired the Saint of Killers, an immortal being whose only purpose was to kill, to find Genesis and kill it. Meanwhile, Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy were just outside of Annville, standing around Cassidy's pickup truck, while Jesse described the sensation of having Genesis in his head to the others. The trio were then surprised by the police, led by Hugo Root. Jesse told all the police to drop their guns and let them go. When all the police obeyed, Jesse realized the power he had been given. After the three drove away, the Saint showed up. In the ensuing carnage, all of the cops were killed, except for Root. Later, Jesse and Cassidy were involved in a bar fight, which was reported to the police. Root had informed his superiors about the situation, so the crime was flagged. Soon enough, Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy were located at a motel. Root took Jesse by surprise; catching him at gunpoint while Custer was exiting the motel. Root then proclaimed that if Jesse tried to speak, he would pull the trigger. When the Saint showed up, Root was distracted. Arseface, Root's son, tried to stop the Saint from killing Root, but before anyone could do anything, Jesse ordered everyone to stop, and forced the Saint to holster his weapons. Then he made the Saint call down the angels who had hired him. DeBlanc, an Angel from heaven, informed everyone present that God had quit, the moment Genesis was created. Jesse swore to find God, and Tulip and Cassidy followed. Jesse ordered Root to do something against Root's beliefs, and Root killed himself afterward.

Angelville Once More

Later, Jesse and Tulip were attacked by Jody and T.C. Jesse's power didn't work on the two, so him and Tulip were taken to Angelville. Marie L'Angell claimed that God was on their side, and that was the reason why Jesse's power couldn't affect them. Jody shot and killed Tulip, leaving Jesse in a state of shock. John Wayne, a figment of Jesse's imagination who had been with him since his father died, talked him into fighting back. Jesse tried using his power on T.C., and when it worked, he laid waste to the entire estate. Tulip helped, who had been resurrected by God as a show of good faith. The two killed everyone there, and burned the house down.

Masada

During the search, Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy ended up at one of Jesus DeSade's legendary orgies. Herr Starr, a member of The Grail, was searching for Jesse, and arrived at DeSade's party a while afterward, with a small group of armed men. They captured Cassidy, who had told them that he was Jesse in order to save Tulip's life, and took him to their headquarters, Masada. Jesse and Tulip began the journey to Masada, and Jesse met one of his dad's old war friends at JFK airport. Later, Tulip and Jesse stole a car and drove the rest of the way to Masada. At a hotel nearby, Jesse left to find Cassidy himself, worried that Tulip would get hurt. Upon arrival, he ordered the guards to take him to The Allfather, the man in charge of the Grail. The Allfather revealed that he was in fact Jesse's cousin, and threatened to kill him for what he did to Marie. The Allfather forced Herr Starr to duel Jesse in a fight to the death, but Starr ran, leading Jesse to a cell in the basement. He showed Jesse that the Grail had captured a fallen Angel, who was also the father of Genesis. Before the two could speak to it, however, the Saint of Killers showed up. The Saint was about to kill Jesse, but the angel saved him by revealing that Jesse was the only person who could tell him what happened to his family. The Saint agreed to help Jesse escape Masada, if he would later tell him the real story. The angel then told Jesse that God would be at Masada that night. Jesse decided to save Cassidy first, torturing Starr into telling him where Cassidy was. God had visited Cassidy, saving his life and giving him a message for Jesse. Jesse saved him and the two escaped, though Jesse never managed to see God.

New Orleans

Cassidy told Jesse of a friend of his who was a voodoo priest. Cassidy said he may be able to help him access Genesis's memories. Cassidy, Tulip, and Jesse traveled to New Orleans to meet him. On the way, they ran into Arseface, who threatened to kill Jesse, in revenge for what had happened to Root. Jesse talked him down, and offered him a ride to New Orleans. However, once they got there, Cassidy was immediately noticed by members of Les Enfants du Sang, a cult dedicated to a vampire that Cassidy had killed. Jesse, Cassidy, and Arseface met Xavier, Cassidy's friend. He said he could help them, but not until the following night. Three members of Les Enfants du Sang attempted to kidnap Tulip, who had opted to go to the hotel instead of meeting Xavier. She killed two of them, and ordered the last one to take her to the cult. She shot a few more, then left, threatening to kill anyone who came after her or her friends. The next night, at midnight, Xavier took them all out to a cemetery, including his girlfriend Janis. He introduced Jesse to Luther, his python, who would assist with the hypnosis. He put Jesse under, allowing him to see the true history of the Saint of Killers. While he was under, Les Enfants du Sang showed up, attacking everyone, but targeting Cassidy. They wanted to force him into turning them into vampires. Janis was killed, and Cassidy was beheaded, though he healed later. Jesse decided to head west, and Tulip and Cassidy joined him.

The Ultimate Mexican Standoff

Jesse bought some peyote from a Navajo, and resolved to use it to speak to Genesis directly. Tulip and Cassidy took him to a remote spot in the desert to take it, so they'd be safe. Little did they know, Herr Starr had decided to follow him. Starr also anticipated that the Saint would show up, so he came prepared with an army. Jesse told the Saint what happened to his family, and the Saint proclaimed that they were even, before defeating Starr's army. Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy were escaping in a plane before Starr called in a E.M.P. missile strike on the Saint. The Saint survived, but the E.M.P. caused Jesse's plane to stop working. Jesse was flung from the plane, with Cassidy trying for dear life to hold on to him. Jesse forced Cassidy to let go, after telling him to tell Tulip that he loved her. Jesse fell into the desert.

Salvation, Texas

Jesse woke up after being nursed back to health by Johnny Lee Wombat, a disgraced wannabe astronaut, though he was missing his left eye. Jesse stayed with Wombat for a while, but decided to move on and search for Tulip and Cassidy. Along the way, he found Skeeter, a dog who became his new pet. Jesse found his friends, but after he witnessed the two kissing he left without making himself known. He made his way to Salvation, Texas. After rescuing Lorie Bobbs, the sister of his childhood friend, from a group of men who were harassing her, he was offered the position of deputy. He declined, but said he would be sheriff. The current sheriff agreed, and Jesse quickly began cleaning up the town. He also found out that his mother, Christina L'Angell, lived here. Odin Quincannon, a local businessman, approached Jesse and told him to leave his employees alone. Jesse didn't let up, so Quincannon decided to have him killed. Eva Oatlash, Quincannon's lawyer, assisted him. After his first attempt, a car bomb, failed, Quincannon hired the KKK to help him. After that failed, he hired an ex-Navy Seal to place bombs around the town. Quincannon blew up the sheriff's office, and told Jesse to meet him. Right before he blew up the rest of the town, Odin was struck by lightning, though he managed to escape by shooting a local and sneaking off in the resulting chaos. Jesse followed him back to the meatpacking factory he owned, where he discovered that Quincannon had been having sex with meat dolls. Jesse killed him, and moved on from Salvation.

Meeting God

Jesse went to a deserted boat dock and took the peyote he had bought. He immediately started hallucinating, and his hallucinations showed his deepest fears and regrets, also revealing how he really felt about Jesse and Tulip. He then had a flashback, revealing what really happened when he fell from the plane. He died, but God had a conversation with him. The conversation angered God, and in a fit of rage he bit Jesse's eye out. He resurrected Jesse, but left him missing an eye.

Together Again

Jesse drove to meet Amy Grinderbinder, a mutual friend between him and Tulip. It turned out that Tulip was visiting her too, so the two met again. Amy left to give them their privacy, and after a while, Jesse and Tulip started to talk about everything that had happened. Tulip revealed that Cassidy had given her a steady supply of booze and drugs so that her judgement was so impaired as to let him sleep with her. After six months, she came to her senses and left, shooting him as she went. Jesse found one of Cassidy's old acquaintances, Sally, and she told him of all the awful things that Cassidy used to do. Jesse came back to Tulip, but just after he did, so did Cassidy. Jesse intimidated him into leaving, but not before making plans to meet in two months.

Custer's Last Stand

Jesse visited DeBlanc and Fiore, and interrogated them about past events in Heaven. Then he went and disturbed the Saint of Killers's grave, drawing him out. He convinced the Saint to help him kill God, and sent a message to Herr Starr telling him where he would be in one week. Jesse drugged Tulip, and left her at the hotel, as he was afraid she'd get hurt. Jesse met Cassidy as planned, and planned to fight him in front of the Alamo at five a.m.. Starr prepared his forces to attack Custer, and Hoover and Featherstone followed. Jesse met and fought Cassidy as planned, but the fight ended when Cassidy committed suicide by sunlight. Tulip had woken up and read the note that Jesse left for her, and had rushed to try and save his life. Featherstone, who now realized that Starr was purely being selfish, attempted to kill him, but was shot down herself. Hoover attempted the same, with the same result. One of Starr's men shot Jesse, killing him and Genesis. Tulip killed Starr in revenge. However, Cassidy had made a deal with God, guaranteeing the survival of both himself and Jesse. God resurrected Jesse, without Genesis, and Cassidy, who was no longer a vampire. Jesse met Tulip, and the two rode off into the sunset on a stolen horse.

When Summer Gets Windy

Good morning. 

Out the window, grey abides. It’s pasty, punctuated by a green foliage that remind me of my childhood in Seattle. In November, the grey came to the Emerald City, opened up an ample steamer trunk and said “Thanks for having me. I'll be staying until May, maybe June, with a few side trips to Grays Harbor County”. 

My mother grew up in Grays Harbor County on the Washington coast and she remembers it as an active, bustling place with the timber and fishing industries providing an abundance of employment to people in Hoquiam, Aberdeen, and other hamlets. I knew it a different way. That's another story. I don’t mind the grey, though growing up I found it grating by April. Even they I knew we had two months to go, and sometimes there would be guest appearances in July or August, as if somehow Seattleites might have forgotten this so-called “neutral” color. Maybe it is neutral amidst the color wheel. In my heart and head it is not an emotional Switzerland. 

Summer in Chicago is a vastly different experience than a Seattle summer. A Venn diagram of the two would reveal shared contours, such as ice cream, the appeal of water (saltier out West), and more time outdoors, at least given the possibility of reasonable temperatures. 

I will let you decide how to define reasonable temperatures.

With all of that in mind, I’ve asked some Chicago friends, writers, and other characters for their thoughts on what makes a Chicago summer compelling. 

 1. Happy Village. I try to make at least one annual summer pilgrimage to Happy Village, where I drink High Lifes in the twinkle-lit beer garden and relive my early 2's when I first moved to Chicago and lived in the Ukrainian Village. Of course, I go far earlier these days because I'm old. My companions and I take breaks from the stickiness by ducking inside for a quick round of Ping-Pong.  

2. Water taxi to Chinatown. I haven't done this yet, which makes this second activity aspirationally fraudulent. But my goal this year is to grab an early Sunday AM water taxi from Michigan Ave. to Chinatown where I will promptly stuff my face with dim sum at Phoenix.   

3. Cubs game/two Chicago doggies. Despite Wrigleyville's disconcerting transition into Rosemont, absolutely nothing beats a summer day at Wrigley Field. This is baseball for the baseball lover—minimal gimmicks and visual distractions—just timeless organ jams, manual scorekeeping on the ole' green board, snappy Chicago doggies and ice-cold Old Styles (now only securable at a few kiosks—our preferred being on the 500 level behind home plate). Not to mention a lot more hits by the Lovable ... Winners.

Be a salmon in any Chicago summer: that is, swim upstream against the current.  Avoid the Lakefront and its crowds—bike the Boulevard system and check out the inland parks from Jackson Park all the way up to Logan Boulevard.  

Before or after a Sox game (you can ALWAYS get a ticket, just go on spur of the moment) go to Palmisano Park (the former Stearns Quarry)on a field trip to Bridgeport, where you can also get the best hot dog or mother-in law sandwich at Johnny O’s at 35th and Morgan, before quenching your thirst at either Maria’s Community Bar or Bernice’s. 

Go to Ping Tom Park and then get dim sum any Sunday morning in Chinatown—be sure to dig the Confucius statue on 22nd Place and the Chinese-American Veteran’s Memorial on the SW corner of the intersection of Archer, Cermak, and Princeton.  

Go to Humboldt Park and experience our one inland beach, as well as the endless selection of comida boricua in Chicago’s Puerto Rican heartland. Don’t ride the Lakefront Path, go hit the path along the North Branch/canal, all the way to Wilmette from K-town.  

Summer is made for biking, do it.

I spend much of the summer looking up. Walking east along Lake Street in the morning, I like to look up and watch El trains chug east with the morning sun behind them. In the evenings, I'm on my back in Millennium Park listening to the Grant Park Orchestra. But in the middle of the day, I make time to look down. I sit on the steps along the Chicago River, just north of Michigan Avenue, and look down at the water at the boats, kayakers, ducks and critters that might float by. My favorite thing to do, hands down, is to be near or on the water. Whether it’s on one of my friend’s boats or in my kayak, being on the water is cathartic for me.   

Being near the water does the same. Being active along the lakefront (although not on those god forsaken bike paths, more like beach volleyball) is key. But then again, so is just sitting on my ass at a lakefront of riverside bar throwing back a Chicago made pint of beer or a non Chicago made glass of rosé. Every year I very much look forward to neighborhood street fairs.

I grew up in old town so the Old Town art fair is near and dear to my heart. Nothing beats grilling out with friends on a blissful, firefly ridden summer night.

And last but not least, Cubs games. Duh. Although if I have to be 100% honest, I prefer watching those in October ;)

In early August, a few weeks before summer winds to a close, just when I’m starting to panic about Labor Day looming and school supplies lining the shelves at Target, my son’s flag football season begins.

The teams play on Friday nights at Sheridan Park in Little Italy, a stone’s throw from Mario’s Italian Lemonade. Siblings flood the playground to the south. Parents stake out spots with blankets and lawn chairs and coolers filled with beverages to share. (It’s where I first experienced wine in a can. You drink it with a straw.) 

Dusk starts to set in around half-time. The park lights go on. The Willis Tower looms to the east, catching and reflecting the last glimmers of the August sun. It’s a lovely little square of chaos and joy and diversity --- kids come from Bridgeport and Logan Square and Bronzeville and the South Loop and Lincoln Park to play in the league. 

After the games, we congratulate our kids on their successes (or dry the tears from their losses) and head to Taylor Street for Italian lemonade. Then we head home and start counting the hours until next Friday night.

There’s a pretty on-the-nose trope that we put up with the indignities of Chicago winter just to experience the few, fleeting months of summer. Chicago’s summertimes feel earned in the way a warm day in Los Angeles never could (it’s also why some of us scoff at snowbirds who decamp to Florida to wait out the winter). 

Two of my favorite activities in the city that really only happen in the summer take place on or near the water. After early memories of enviously watching scullers on the river near Lincoln Park and downtown, I eventually picked up a practical and portable inflatable kayak. I sneak into undisclosed put-in points around the north branch of the river and slide into the water (usually with a buddy and a small cooler of drinks in tow). 

There’s a fascinating river culture that, if you walked by the very same houses from the sidewalk, you’d miss entirely. The ecosystem feels richer, but you never forget you’re in a city. Hawks and night herons and turtles co-mingle with groaning steel bridges, train tracks and graffiti. 

When I want less isolation, I ride the southern part of the Lakefront Trail and stop off at the 63rd St. Beach. There could be an impromptu gig, pre-planned live music on the lawn and a water playground that I can run through with my summer clothes on (I’ve never been a fan of the beach proper).

If I’m feeling especially motivated, I’ll keep going south until I hit Calumet Fisheries. My reward for a long ride with be a sack of smoked shrimp and salmon that I can eat in the grassy embankment outside that little shrimp and fish shack or on the rickety picnic table that overlooks the 95th St. bridge -- and the lazy barges that float by.

Though I ride my bike year-round, there is something particularly magical about riding my bike during summertime in Chicago. All the cold days fall away and you are left with sunshine and the warm breeze along the lakefront trail and city streets. It is a beautiful feeling that always makes me fall in love with Chicago again. 

There are very few things comparable to the energy of summer street festivals in Chicago when all your friends come together to enjoy music, food, or a movie. 

For that period of time, the streets become ours.

Serververse Stampede (Universal Edition)

I've been interested in a hypothetical idea of a different company serververse, one of them being Universal.

Like WB, Universal has a wide variety of franchises and characters to include as cameos and Easter eggs.

Someone did a fanmake of the first Space Jam with DreamWorks characters as the Looney Tunes. If one of A New Legacy was done with a character stampede, I'd imagine these would be the characters/vehicles spotted making their way through the crowds.

Emperors daughter Ch 13

Chapter 1 

Chapter 12                                                                                                                                              Johnny walks her to her apartment building, and, he spends the entire time talking to Selina. He makes her laugh, and occasionally he directs a question to Brenda. Brenda was never one to act shy, so she answers every question that she can. “Red!” She answers proudly when he asks Brenda, her favorite color. “She’s adorable” He insists. “You’re very lucky.” She smiles grateful, “Thank you” “Who’s the Father?” He asks softly. She sighs. “Different from the one in my womb” She says. “Momma says she has a baby in her tummy” Brenda says patting Selina’s stomach. “And in 3 months I’ll get to meet the baby, momma says she’ll be my little sister, but that’s silly babies don’t belong in someone’s tummy, why would a baby be there?” “I think that’s an answer for another day” He tells the little girl. Brenda seems to pout. “Momma never answer that question either!” She says annoyed. “Because you’re to young piccola” She tells Brenda. “I’m not piccolo, I’m grande!” She says holding her hands wide apart. Johnny can’t help but laugh. “You’re of no help” She mutters to Johnny.  She stops at the apartment building, the store wasn’t that far, so she saw no need to take her car. “Thanks for the walk.” She says, before she pulls Brenda inside. “I liked it, I was wondering… could I give you my number?” Johnny asks. Selina stops and stares at Johnny. He’s not a god, he’s (as far as she can tell anyway) human, he’s kind. He seems interesting. To be honest she’s quite interested in getting to know him better. She smiles. “Sure” ---     Other men when they realise she has a child, and another on the way. Don’t want to look at her. When they realise that the two children are by two completely different people they get a look of disgust in their eyes. Johnny doesn’t do that. He tries to be understanding. He listens when everything gets hectic, when the fear that she’s going to fail gets to much. He makes her laugh. He can play the guitar and it always seems to have this type of magic over her and is able to calm her down within a matter of seconds.   Brenda warms up to him quickly, she likes his stories, of Egyptian mythology. Of Ra, and Apophis of Horus, Osiris and Set. Brenda’s enraptured, and Selina allows him to tell the stories. “Any truth to the tales?” She asks him. After he’s had dinner at her house, and she’s putting the dishes in the sink. “There’s truth to every story told” She smiles. “You’re being purposefully evasive” She complains. “Do you believe the myths you tell are real.” “Do you believe the Greek and Roman myths are real? The Norse?” She stares at him for a moment, her heart beating far to fast. “What do you know about me?” “That you’re a single mother of two half siblings” He says. “Not much outside of that” Brenda’s running around in the living room. Pretending she’s an airplane. “Brenda be careful sweetie.” Brenda stops and pouts but then she starts banging on her little drum set. “Think you should give her lessons?” Johnny asks covering his ears. “Oh probably” Selina says. “Maybe when she’s older and can sit still long enough to be actually taught.” --- Callie Maglieri is born in a hospital like the one that Brenda was born in. Natalie came in running, drove over night to see the beautiful girl being born.  She has blond fuzz growing out her head. She’s tiny the size of her hand. Her cries are beautiful, and she knows that people will crowd from all over to her voice. She does not stop crying until she’s placed in her mother’s arms. “Hey Callie” She whispers to the little girl. “You’re so cute.” “She’s so beautiful” Natalie gushes. “Can I hold my niece” Selina nods she hands the baby over to Natalie while Brenda jumps on Selina’s lap. “Was I that pretty?” She asks. “Of course, all babies are pretty in their mother’s eyes.” Brenda smiles and leans against her mother’s chest. --- Johnny comes by a couple of weeks later. Arms filled to the brim with toys. “We’ve only known each other a couple of months” She says surprised. “You didn’t have to do this” “Yeah, well with taking care of Brenda, and work, I figured you hadn’t had time to get little Callie any toys.” “You’re too much Johnny” She says. "Nonsense you're kid deserves the best" He says. "I'm happy to help." "Seriously how did you even afford this." "I have my ways." Johnny says with a smile. ---- Brenda’s Birthday comes and Natalie drives all the way up as per usual to help celebrate. She seems to take a special liking to Johnny. He can make everyone calm. So, she’s not surprised that Natalie takes a liking to him.  He has a fascination with Greek Mythology, so she’s not surprised when their wrapped in a discussion of different mythologies.  With Selina occasionally throwing in a quip on Roman mythologies. He gives Brenda a gift, a fake wooden toy sword. She starts lashing it around the house. She takes it away from Brenda, when she nearly breaks a lamp. “Not now, Brenda” “But I’m your wittle fighter” Brenda says with a pout. “You are, and you can practice fighting with this sword when you’re not near your younger sister.” She says with a half glance at Johnny. “I read that Brenda in some regions means Sword, I took a guess” He says sheepishly. “Too soon?” Selina rolls her eyes. Natalie gives Brenda a box full of Legos. Selina gives Brenda an new book full of Norse Myths that has more myths then her old story book. --- Neither of them asks each other if they are dating, if they want to start dating, it’s a lot more gradual then that. Most of the time when Johnny and she go anywhere, they take the kids along.  So, she never actually considers it a date. They hang out at the zoo, Callie is hanging from her pouch. Brenda adores the gorillas. She laughs at there growling and their calls.  Though Callie seems terrified. Callie herself has a fascination with swans. Selina is holding tightly to Johnny’s hand. She hears people cooing at the adorable couple and their kids. A few even say that their kids are adorable. Johnny places and arm around her shoulders. Selina corrects them at first but then decides that it isn’t worth the effort. “Sorry about all that” She says. Johnny shrugs. “Being considered the father of your kids is probably the second-best thing” Selina laughs. “OH yeah, What’s the first?” “Being their father” Selina looks at Johnny in surprise. Half expecting to laugh and state he’s joking, but he’s being honest. It’s the first time they kiss. --- It’s late at night and they are still up talking, it’s Saturday and Selina don’t have to be at work and they’re just sitting by talking. “What do you like to do?” Johnny asks. “I mean besides taking care of Brenda and Callie.” “Hey, I adore my kids” Selina argues, but she sighs. “I played the violin, and I’ve sung on occasion.” Johnny whistles. “Nice, how are you on the violin” “I once played in an Orchestra, The New York Orchestra.” She says by way of explanation. “How old are you?” he asks as though he can’t believe it. “23” She says. “Wow” Johnny says. “Were the hours too awkward?” He says. “With taking care of Brenda, and Callie on the way?” “I auditioned for an orchestra here” She says taking a sip of tea. “Turned down, but after I was turned down I realized that the hours would have been awkward, so I applied for a waitressing job and I got it.” “How’d you get into the orchestra?” “I used to be a street performer in Boston, and a scout from New York-” “Your making that up.” Johnny said. “You were a street performer in Boston?” “Are you going to let me finish?” Silena says. Johnny raises a hand and leans back to let her finish. “Anyway, a scout from New York said I sounded too good to be playing on the street, and he gave a card and said that the New York Orchestra was looking for violin players. I auditioned, and I got the part, and so I moved to New York, where I eventually met Callie’s father.” “What led you to move here” Silena goes silent. Johnny waits and eventually she looks up. “Can we talk about that later?” She asks, pleading with him slightly. “I… I don’t want to talk about it.” Johnny nods in understanding.   She knows she can’t keep this up forever, but… she can’t tell him about the mythological side of herself. Not yet. --- Johnny and Silena have known each other a year, when he reveals his big secret. He’s a magician of the house of life.  He’s an Egyptian magician. Because of course he is. She can’t have one ordinary boyfriend, can she? No, they all must be related to some kind of mythology. All have to be some kind of supernatural being don’t they? She’s not even mad at Johnny she’s mad, at herself for not seeing it sooner. --- She doesn’t talk to him for days after the reveal, and Johnny gives her the space to deal with the news. After making sure she won’t tell anyone. She insists  to tell Natalie, that Natalie has kept so many of her secrets she won’t reveal this one, and Johnny must have seen something on her face because he relents rather quickly to her surprise. On the one hand this could be everything she’s wanted. This could be the protection she was looking for, from her father from everything. Truth is she’s just so blind sided every other magical being she’s dated she knew was immortal before they started dating. This throws her for a loop. “So what’s the problem?” Natalie asks. “Does this in anyway change him?” “Makes a few things make a bit more sense but otherwise… no.” “Then…?” Silena sighs. “He told me his secret, I… I don’t know if I’m ready to tell him mine.” “You told me yours” Natalie argues. “I was hoping you would run away in terror” Silena says dryly. “I actually want this guy to stay, also he’s Egyptian, I’m Roman, Egypt and Rome do not have a good history.” “So, the worst that could happen is that he leaves you, after all your other boyfriends him leaving should be easy for you.” “You’re not helping.” Natalie sighs. “You want some good news?” “Yeah?” “I’m seeing someone, and so is Fredrick” Her eyes widened. “Oh yeah? Who?” “Frey” “Frey… as in the Norse god Frey?” “Yep” “As in lord of Alfheim Frey, as in god of summer, Frey” “Yep” She rubs her forehead. “Well shitake mushrooms” She says with a half glance at Brenda who’s quiet looking over the mythology story book she recently got for her birthday. Callie is sleeping in her car seat. “Wait until I tell who Fredrick is seeing” “Who?” “Athena” “The Virgin Goddess?” “At least we know an unexpected child can’t appear from that union” “Well she and Hephaestus had a child together through a napkin so… anything’s possible.” Brenda looks up curiously but Silena gives her a kiss. “Later” “Oh yeah” Natalie says with a chuckle. “I forgot about that.” “Let me know how it goes.” --- She agonizes for days over how and what to tell him, when it comes to her. She doesn’t want him to stay for some misconception version of her, she wants him to stay for the real her. For the real Brenda and the real Callie, and if he can’t handle her then… she needs to move on. --- “Johnny?” “Yeah?” “Can you come over tonight? Around nine or so after the kids are put down? You and I, we need to talk.” “Are you dumping me?” Silena smiles against the phone bitterly. “No, but if we’re going to give this a try, there are things about me, I want you to know, things you need to know, about my past, about Brenda and Callie’s fathers.” Johnny stays quiet for a long time. “I’ll be over.” --- He comes over, and she talks, she tells him everything, of her father, of her mother of her first love, of her move to Boston and meeting Tyr, all the way to New York and her move to Dallas. She stays silent once she’s finished and waits for him to say something anything. He takes her in his arms, and she releases a breath she didn’t even know she was holding and she can feel herself letting out several years worth of tears. She breaks down crying on his lap at first trying to keep as quiet as possible so as not to wake the kids, but Johnny whispers an Egyptian word that she must assume means along the lines of ‘muffled’ or ‘quiet’ and she lets herself cry as loud as possible. Holding nothing back. Johnny just holds her tightly as she cries herself to sleep. --- Now that they know each other’s secrets, Johnny starts to be more free with his past. She finds out he started training and learning at the age of 6, in ancient Egypt. She learns that his preferred form of magic is music (Something that pleases her immensely) but he’s also quite proficient in certain elements. Like water and fire. And Hieroglyph magic. She tells him about her childhood, about her first love, about how her mother used to play the violin, about her twin. About her siblings. About the good times in her life, about… About her first love. Not in an overbearing way, not in a flyby way, but in a ‘it’s good to get this off my chest way’ It’s nice. He tells her of his dreams, of how he loves being a magician of the highs and lows of being one. Of how he hated the constant practice, but how he likes how the magic sets him apart from everyone else. --- He takes her to visit his parents who live at the nome in Texas. They eat dinner in a private room in the nome and they seem suspicious of her at first, but Selina is honest and polite, and slowly the suspicion dies away. Mrs. O'Hare adores little Callie and loves holding the young Grecian demigod in her arms. Mr. O'Hare takes a special liking to Brenda who finds her eagerness to fight to be a little charming. --- “Did you always know what form you wanted your magic to be?” She asks. “Not exactly, it’s not so much a pick and choose it’s more a case of what type of magic fits your personality, a person who prefers to have both feet on solid ground, and is no nonsense, would have a hard time seeing into the duat” Selina nods. She doesn’t completely understand what the duat is, as far as she can glean it’s something of an inner world that runs parallel to the physical world, parts of it can be used to mask parts of the mythological world from human eyes. She later tells him that the shield that hides the mythological world is called ‘the mist’ in roman and Greek mythologies. Which he argues is the ‘stupidest name he’s ever heard of’. To which she replies that it’s just a good a name as Duat. To which they both glare then proceed to glare at eachother, before the pair of them break out laughing. --- “Ha, ha, ha” “It’s not funny!” “Really? cause from my point of view it’s hilarious” “My brother was traumatised.” Selina sobers when she here’s that. “Really?” “OK he’s very freaked out, a baby just appears the fuck out of nowhere, with Athena telling him it’s his.” “Did she explain how?” “Something about the joining of minds and souls, or something, I don’t know, Fredrick was too freaked out to make much sense.” "Well Athena was born through Zeus's head..." She says with a shrug." "He tried to give the baby back, and have the girl raised on Olympus" "I'm sure Athena was pleased" "She refused to take the baby back." Natalie said softly. "And threatened to curse Fredrick to a lifetime of failure if he dared ask that of her again." "Yeah, the gods don't like their gifts rejected, what's the girl's name?" "He's decided to name her Annabeth..." "Least she'll have a cool aunt..." "And cousin" "What?" "I'm pregnant with Frey's child" ... "Congratulations" Silena says unsure of what else she should say. ---     Johnny smiles at her and takes her hand. “I have something I need to ask of you.” “You can ask me anything Johnny.” He get’s down on one knee and a ring box in his hand. “Will you marry me?” She smiles. “Of course!” She says. He slips the ring on her finger before he gives her a kiss.

Santa's Toy Monster Attacks (2011)

Merry Christmas, DA!

For my 2011 Christmas Card, I decided to go with a design involving Santa Claus sicking his toy monster on a naughty kid.

This piece was by far this most ambitious piece I've ever done. I looked back and saw that I posted my first draft of this piece in my DeviantArt scrapbook on June 29th, and I've just completed it finally on November 12th... Dang.

I am really proud of this piece, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
