Who Played the Original Celestial Toymaker in Doctor Who?
Who Played the Original Celestial Toymaker in #DoctorWho?
The Toymaker has returned to Doctor Who, to entertain himself and cause havoc, and he looks just like Neil Patrick Harris. He will be only the second actor to portray the mysterious and mischievous villain on television in Doctor Who, since most of the character’s appearances have been in extended media. He has most frequently appeared in comics, and his facial features in print have tended to…

I guess no one here has heard of him. But this was in the front of that poor, falling apart book, Napoleon by JT Herbert Baily. David Belasco was a famous playwright, producer, and innovator in stage lighting in America. And apparently he used to own my book! If only I could ask him what the heck happened to it!

(More of it's sad condition below)
Hopefully in the next week or two we can take it to Cincinnati for some help!

On 7th of September 1736, Captain Porteous was dragged from prison and lynched by an angry mob in Edinburgh.
This is a story I enjoy telling my friends who have visited Edinburgh and have a wee wander around with me, The Grassmarket being a great stop off point to have a liquid refreshment in one of the many bars in the area. Edinburgh is so rich with history, the bar names relate to specific things, last week I told you about Maggie Dickson, another bar is the White Hart, which relates to oor first King David. This tale might not have a bar attached to it, but the plaque in the pic is opposite the main Grassmarket "hub" and is good starting point.
The background was popular anger with the economic effects of the Union which had destroyed Scotland's trade with France and had imposed various duties, especially a malt tax in 1725 which drove up the price of ale, there's nothing worse than a Scotsman having to pay more for his alcohol!
Porteous, Captain of the Town Guard, ordered his men to fire at an angry crowd which had begun pelting them with stones at the execution of a popular smuggler in the Grassmarket. Nine spectators were killed, including a young boy watching from a high window. Found guilty, Porteous was sentenced to be hanged and imprisoned in the Tolbooth. Queen Caroline, acting for George II who was in Hanover, granted a stay of execution.
However, the mob took its revenge by breaking into the Tolbooth and dragging Porteous to the Grassmarket where he was lynched on the pole of a dyer's premises directly adjacent to the site of the gallows. On the way, they broke into a booth at the foot of the West Bow to procure a length of rope, leaving behind a guinea in payment on the counter.
The Provost and four bailies, deemed negligent for failing to alert the Castle garrison, were summoned to appear before the House of Lords, resulting in the town being fined £2,000 for the support of Porteous' widow. An Act requiring ministers of the gospel to demand the killers give themselves up and threaten severe penalties on those shielding them was widely seen as an abuse of the Kirk and ignored.
The perpetrators were never caught. Porteous was buried in Greyfriars, his grave marked by a post inscribed P.1736. In 1973, a biographer paid for a new headstone with the words, "John Porteous, a Captain of the Edinburgh City Guard, murdered 7 September 1736 - All passion spent".

To Bailey, Lily, and Russell: Since you’re dating a predator, what kind of relationship challenges do you face? I’m only asking because I’m a guy and I’ve had a male wolf friend recently come to me and ask me out
Russell, his ears turning pink: "Uh... w-well..."
Baily: "You do have to remember that us humans are omnivores, making us predators as well. Granted, our lack of claws or sharp teeth kinda make that a bit hard to believe for some mammals..."
He reaches into his coat pocket to pull out his buzzing phone, accidentally swiping up and hitting the speaker option.
Leodore: "Hey there, Barney! Just calling to let you know that I've mulled it over, and I still find it silly that you guys are predators. No offense, but you kinda look more like how we'd make a felt puppet mascot for a show to teach very young mammals tolerance and understanding and all that nonsense towards predators. Basically you're predator lite, if you catch my meaning. Also wanted to let you know that I'm gunna be kinda late for our next card reading session, things did NOT work out in the waste disposal union like I had thought it would. Seriously, you make one, or several, jokes about organized crime connections, and suddenly everyone gets up into a tizzy... oh great, it looks like I'm getting pulled over now. I probably shouldn't be talking on my phone while driving, but this is just getting ridiculous. Anyways, see you in maybe an hour."
The phone goes silent, the three humans staring wide-eyed at it in silence.
Lily: "Anyways... it's true that there have been some challenges. Like smaller herbivorous mammals sometimes being nervous around us and giving us side-eyed looks and wide berths."
Russell: "Patricia and David told me that it was a lot worse towards predators a few years ago, but that it's gotten better. The specism towards predators in general, I mean. But then there's also... some members of Jackson's pack aren't too happy with him not dating another jackal, or at the very least, another canid... and sometimes, despite the brave face he puts on... you can see that it does in fact hurt him from time to time..."
Lily: "Some of Renato's family has voiced similar concerns... with his great-grandmother suggesting that we are some kind of evil spirits that have started appearing to work a dark mischief... whatever that means."
Baily, rubbing the back of his head: "I might be kinda lucky in that regard. I'm sure some members of Sophia's pride might not be too happy with her bringing in a human... especially one who was, until very recently, homeless. But thanks to a 'certain someone' and their increasingly embarrassing antics, I guess I'm looking golden in comparison..."
His phone buzzes again and, after receiving now somewhat amused nods from the other two, Baily swipes up and enables the speaker function yet again.
Leodore: "No, officer, you've got this all wrong! That wad of money just fell out of my pocket! It was not a bribe! Speeding and talking on my phone when driving is around $150 here, I've gotten enough tickets for that to know by now; so why would I try to give you $400 when I can just bite the bullet and pay this fine?! OOF!" A loud slamming sound followed by a muffled voice speaking. "Oh, uh, Basil, we're gunna need to have a rain check for that reading. Apparently someone needs to FILL A QUOTA!"
The call ends.
Lily: "... Anywho, opening your heart to someone can be scary, and each time there will be their own sets of challenges. But, there's the chance that you could find someone who makes your heart sing... ahem, and whom you get on with wonderfully. Ultimately, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love my big fluffy Marshmallow."
Baily: "I never thought I could feel the way I do about Sophia. Sometimes I wonder if she isn't an angel..."
Russell: "And I'm really glad that I said yes to Jackson! I don't know how things will go down the road, but I'm really happy here and now!"
Lily: "I think that it's safe to say that all three of us here wish you the best of luck with this wolf boy!"

Ryrie Bar, Haymarket.
Historic Scotland describe this bar as  s “ 2-storey Baronial public house; main block with panelled Scottish Renaissance entrance and ground floor windows, latter with Art Nouveau stained glass.”
Kirkwood's map of 1817 shows the earlier building on this site as the Haymarket Weigh House. In 1830 David Lawrie occupied this building, otherwise known as ‘The Hay Weights’ as an Innkeeper. A few years later Henry Cochrane is listed as a Spirit Dealer at the same address. In 1842 the Edinburgh Glasgow Railway is completed and terminated behind the building. It is shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map as 'The Railway Inn' and occupied the whole of the current site.
Alexander Ryrie (Snr) was born in Edinburgh circa 1807, married Henrietta Reid and was father to ten children. He appears in an 1842 Street Directory as a Gardener based in Dalry Lane, alongside possibly his mother, Mrs Ryrie. In various documents he is listed as a Market Gardener, and by the 1861 census he is occupying 11 acres of land.
The next year, 1862, he took on the Railway Inn, and the older western part of the building is rebuilt. Sadly he died in 1865 leaving his wife as the licensee. Henrietta died two years later in 1867 and as her daughter Jane was 21, she obtained the license for the premises. Jane married in 1868 and in the 1871 census her sister Margaret is shown as the head of the family for what has now been renamed The Haymarket Inn.
The main part of the building was rebuilt in 1868 with maps showing it as rectangular with a bay window in the east of the north elevation. It is possible that this remained a private house for the family until it’s remodelling in 1906. Alexander Ryrie (Jnr) was born in 1850 and by the 1881 census he is listed as the Head of the family and as Publican of The Haymarket Inn.
Tumblr media
The above undated photograph from what is believe to b ecirca 1880′s, showing two gentlemen, one of which is likely to be Alex Ryrie. The other is possibly his brother Henry. Alexander remains the licensee of The Haymarket Inn until the end of 1905, when he dies. By this time he is has whisky in bond at Leith. Unfortunately he does not appear to have seen the building remodelled to what we now know as Ryrie’s.
In 1906 the two parts of the building were linked as private and public bars of one property and the ground floor and interior rebuilt. The client for the 1906 work was Messrs Ryrie & Company, whisky merchants.
The architect for the 1906 refit, Robert McFarlane Cameron, was responsible for a number of fine pub interiors in Edinburgh, including The Guildford Arms, also part of the D M Stewart Ltd group. His practice was medium sized and very varied and ranged from churches and schools at one end to public houses and premises for the licensed trade at the other. He served as a bailie and magistrate of the city and was considered to be 'a firm friend of the Trade' and as such secured a number of commissions for re-fitting pubs. These became examples of what is now known as People’s Palaces.
George Morrison, a director of the nearby New Edinburgh Brewery at Slateford, owned by Thomas & James Bernard Ltd, became tenant. His widow acquired the heritable interest in the property and then her executry sold the public house to the Brewery. In turn, Scottish Brewers Ltd acquired Thomas & James Bernard Ltd in 1960. In the 1980s the large Ryrie’s and W M Younger’s Ales signs were placed on the gable ends of the property.
Further minor interior alterations in 1992 improved access around the bar, but left the majority of the original bar unchanged. Ownership of the property passed between large national Pubcos before being purchased by the Edinburgh family run pub company D M Stewart Ltd, which owns and operates some of the cities finest Victorian and Edwardian pubs.
In 2022, 160 years after the Ryrie family first began operating from the building, it reopened after a thorough restoration was completed, taking the exterior paintwork, which was black and then blue, back to it’s original state.
