Getting the Aardvark Book Box is slowly but surely becoming the most awaited action on my monthly calendar- if there’s a gripe I have to pick, it’s just that they allow only 3 picks!! March especially tempted me to pick all their selections 📚📚 So without further ado let’s go into my picks for this month.. Big Swiss by Jen Beagin explores the voyeuristic relationship between Greta and Flavia, albeit the origin of the questionable relation lies in the transcription of Flavian’s confession to Greta’s therapist! Soon to be adapted into an HBO show, this one promises to be a cracker. The Magician’s Daughter by H.G.Parry takes us into a magical place, Hy-Brasil which Biddy inhabits with her guardian, the mercurial magician Rowan. One night, Rowan fails to return from his mysterious travels. To find him, Biddy must venture into the outside world for the first time. But Rowan has powerful enemies—forces who have hoarded the world’s magic and have set their sights on the magician’s many secrets. Biddy may be the key to stopping them. Yet the closer she gets to answers, the more she questions everything she’s ever believed about Rowan, her past, and the nature of magic itself. Magic 🪄 The final pick had to be 48 Clues into the Disappearance of my Sister by the author of Blonde- Joyce Carol Oates- do I say more? Happy Publication Day btw 🥳 The premise of this one gives me The Gone Girl vibes and should be fascinating . What were your picks? 📚 #bookfollow #bookishfollow #booksofig #bookishpost #bookstagram #bookishfriends #bookcommunity #readersofinstagram #aardvarkbookclub #fantasy #thriller ##lgbtq🌈 #happypubday #contemporary #womenshistorymonth #bigswiss #48cluesintothedisappearanceofmysister #themagiciansdaughter #hgparry #joycecaroloates #blonde #romancebooks #jenbeagin https://www.instagram.com/p/CpwBtPZr17P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read & review an ARC of this novel, "Bend Toward the Sun" by Jen Devon.
Where to begin with this one?... This book is about Rowan and Harrison (Harry). Rowan's occupation has her involved with botany and STEM - really enjoyed seeing that representation throughout the course of this novel. Harrison is an OB/GYN who has recently lost a patient. The two of them meet in a totally and completely unexpected sort of way.
If I had to choose some words to describe what reading this novel was like for me, I would choose "intense", "emotional", and "angsty". The fact that this was the author's debut novel not only pleasantly surprising, but well-received!
Overall, I rated this novel a 4/5 stars!

When readers say,
"The ACOTAR series better not be like The War of Two Queens," I say
Do you know Sarah Maas at all? She is known to usually introduce the mates of the protagonists mid-series. That was why we were even contemplating if she was going to pull a 'Rowan' or 'Rhys' on us in Crescent City with Hunt Athalar.
Do you know Jennifer Armentrout? She is known to stick to her endgame couples. That was why it was a shock to us on how she wrote TWOTQ.
I've read comments say Sarah better not be pulling a Gwynriel or Lucien-Vassa on us like what Jennifer did with Poppy-Kieran-Cas. I mean, do you really not know your authors at all? Sarah is not Jen and vice versa. Why compare them when they both deliver good stories in their own unique writing styles?
Will it be unexpected to have Gwynriel and Lucien-Vassa as endgame? NO. Like I said, Sarah is known to change couples mid-series and she has pulled it off splendidly in the past. So stop comparing Poppy-Cas-Kieran to ACOTAR because they are wholly different. Just because you want another couple to be endgame doesn't justify your argument. Enough sabotaging these authors.

What are To the Highest Bidder and Good Morrow, Good Day about? Are they fluff? I am assuming they are rowaelin fic?
They are indeed Rowaelin!
To The Highest Bidder is the date auction AU I've been working on. Still in the preliminary stages though.
Good Morrow, Good Day is based on Well Met by Jen DeLuca, which is a contemporary romance book set at a ren faire. As soon as I read it, I knew I wanted Aelin and Rowan to fall in love at a ren faire.
I would say that they're both relatively fluffy? They're not super angsty, but there are some shenanigans. They're both not ready at this time, I'm devoting a lot of my energy to Of Authors, which is slow going.

SNL is back with Owen Wilson as first host of season 47. Kacey Musgraves is the musical guest. Episode 2 will have a ridic choice for host. Halsey will sing. Is everybody watching the Amber Ruffin Show?? I loved her before but now… I learn so much from her show. Sometimes it takes a comic to get to the real serious shit. For example: Have you heard of drowning towns? Towns like Oscarville, Kowaliga, York hill, Seneca Village, Prentiss and countless other black towns that were drowned out to make lakes for the local whites. Central Park was also made after a black community was erased from history. Development displacement? Alleyway dwelling authority? Even those rabid for history can find out new things everyday. Thanks Amber!!

Days Alert: The Beyond Salem thing was ridic but it was so great to see some old characters.  Days is so great at visiting old family. Who can resist Shane, Austin and Carrie, Billie and the old Kristen? I do wish that Peacock would get their kinks out!! Back to the real Days: Are we smelling an Emmy for Susan Seaforth Hayes and Bill?? ** Good to have Abigail back. It is always fun to wonder which actress and or personality it will be. ** Deidre Hall got her star on the walk of fame.**And just in time for Halloween, the Devil is making a comeback. John Mulaney and Olivia Munn are going to have a baby.
*****
The Emmy’s were a little different this year with more of a Golden Globe look.  Cedric the Entertainer hosted with Reggie Watts as DJ. Lots of minority noms but barely a win. It was a white people night. Ted Lasso had a great night. Mare of Eastown took home a few with Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson and Kate Winslet. Now, Kate is great but how did Anya Taylor- Joy not walk away with that? Queens Gambit did win a couple and gave the longest speech with the seemingly arrogant director Scott Frank who opened up 2 page acceptance. Categories were tough but I was routing for Renee Elise Goldberry and Bowen Yang but perhaps next year. The people in England who had their own party for all the statues that the Crown won seemed to be having more fun! Hacks won for writing and directing and Jean Smart!! It was nice to see the Norm Macdonald love which was barely mentioned by Lorne but celebrated by John Oliver. Colbert ‘s election night special won as did JB Smoove. Hamilton won and Debbie Allen got the big one. I do not understand why real singers and or musicians have to be there for the in Memoriam. It takes me out of it a bit and concentrates the focus on them. Do they think that people will pay attention more? Do they want to keep the home audience or live audience from the bathroom?  My best dressed were Anya Taylor-Joy, Michaela Cole who won for I may destroy you, Jean Smart, Josh O’Connor, Kathryn Hahn, Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez, Keenan Thonpson, Leslie Odom Jr., Catherine O’Hara, Trevor Noah, Eugene Levy, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, Bowen Yang,  Anthony Anderson, Leslie Grossman, Amber Ruffin, Allyson Felix, Renee Elise Goldberry, Samira Wiley and Rege- Jean Page. My worst were Sarah Paulson, Gillian Anderson,  Beanie Feldstein, Elizabeth Olsen and Aidy Bryant. To me the best part of the show was the enthusiasm of Conan and the way he injected himself into much of the evening .He was the show.  Go Conan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*****
Next year there must be some Emmys for Sarah Paulson and Cobie Smulders in Impeachment!!!!!

Trevor Noah is right? Why do they stop giving lollipops to adults at the doctor?

*****
Brooklyn 99 had about the best finale (other than Newhart) that I can recall. I had my fingers crossed that Chelsea would be back. Will they honor us like they did in the show and come back for a special about once a year? That would be fucking awesome!!
*****
Don’t expect compliments from an insecure person.- Mr. Pickles
*****
Thousands and thousands of people are in need. Haitian refugees and other immigrants have seen nothing like this what with assassination, a hurricane and earthquake. The Southern border is a mess.** Why does Fox news keep telling refugees the border is open as they sit back and laugh at Biden’s predicament.  Spreading false info to intentionally hurt poor, distressed people has no end for them.
*****
Do companies know how fucked up their employment websites are? It is true that some people do not want to work. It is true that people schedule interviews and don’t show up. It is also true that companies have made it so hard to apply that many can’t. I suppose it is easier for them but the poor who may really want to work have a hard time. Paper applications are almost completely gone. The old fashioned way of walking into low paying job sites and finding a connection with a manager rarely exist. Some places only accept texts or have long ridiculous psych tests that a working Mother may not have time for. A Father working many hours already, may not be able to go to the library to get online if they cannot afford a computer. Many websites tell you that there no positions available in your area while there is a huge sign in front of the establishment. Can’t find people to work.. Gee I wonder why?? And treat people with respect once you find them, how about that?

Hey.. There was a van air B’n B biz going that got busted. Hey.. The poor need vaca’s too. It is wrong but If they are willing to sleep in a van, why not. I truly think that many do not understand how much people are struggling.

Free coffee day came and went but only a few places really gave you free coffee without rules to govern the promo. Some places wanted to sell you something else and some made you belong to their club. Starbucks held that customers had to come inside for the free cup of Joe, handicapped or not.
*****
One would think the Republicans would run out of $ for recounts but they have deep pockets. Just think how much good they could do for the huddled masses with that scratch.
*****
Sad to lose Mick Brigden, protégé of Bill Graham who managed The Stones and worked with Frampton, Dylan and Santana.** And the comics were very vocal about the loss of Norm Macdonald. He was one of a kind and he will be missed!

YA & School Love in LGBTQIA+ Historical Romances
First off, I’m glad to say that the YA novels of today are teeming with LGBT characters, many of them MCs. That said, this is just a taste of a few that I really enjoyed or by authors you might not be aware of yet. @lgbtqreads is an excellent resource for more exhaustive lists, and also companies like Book Riot.
All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages. Short story anthology of LGBTQIA teenagers throughout history, from across the spectrum. Ed by Sandra Mitchell
- Take a journey through time and genres to discover stories where queer teens live, love and shape the world around them. Seventeen young adult authors across the queer spectrum have come together to create a collection of beautifully written diverse historical fiction for teens. From a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood set in war-torn 1870s Mexico featuring a transgender soldier, to two girls falling in love while mourning the death of Kurt Cobain, forbidden love in a sixteenth-century Spanish convent or an asexual girl discovering her identity amid the 1970s roller-disco scene, All Out tells a diverse range of stories across cultures, time periods and identities, shedding light on an area of history often ignored or forgotten.
Hayden Thorne novels are being reissued. She specializes in YA LGBT romance novels, many with fantasy elements, but all of them well constructed and inventive. I’ve read almost all of her novels in this genre, and several are mentioned elsewhere on this blog. Just, please, check out this amazing author’s work for some very creative takes on some of your favorite tropes, and ideas I’ve never read anywhere else.
A Place for Wolves by Kosoko Jackson
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe meets Code Name Verity in this heartbreaking and poignant historical thriller. (YA!!)
James Mills isn’t sure he can forgive his parents for dragging him away from his life, not to mention his best friend and sister, Anna. He’s never felt so alone. Enter Tomas. Falling for Tomas is unexpected, but sometimes the best things in life are. Then their world splits apart. A war that has been brewing finally bursts forward, filled with violence, pain, and cruelty. James and Tomas can only rely on each other as they decide how far they are willing to go—and who they are willing to become—in order to make it back to their families.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee (Review)
- A young bisexual British lord embarks on an unforgettable Grand Tour of Europe with his best friend/secret crush. An 18th-century romantic adventure for the modern age written by This Monstrous Thing author Mackenzi Lee - Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets the 1700s.Henry "Monty" Montague doesn't care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family's estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. So Monty vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty's reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.Witty, dazzling, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is an irresistible romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
Don't miss Felicity's adventures in The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, the highly anticipated sequel!
Pantomine by Laura Lam (Micah Grey Trilogy Book 1)
- In a land of lost wonders, the past is stirring once more . . .
Gene's life resembles a debutante's dream. Yet she hides a secret that would see her shunned by the nobility. Gene is both male and female. Then she displays unwanted magical abilities - last seen in mysterious beings from an almost-forgotten age. Matters escalate further when her parents plan a devastating betrayal, so she flees home, dressed as a boy.
The city beyond contains glowing glass relics from a lost civilization. They call to her, but she wants freedom not mysteries. So, reinvented as 'Micah Grey', Gene joins the circus. As an aerialist, she discovers the joy of flight - but the circus has a dark side. She's also plagued by visions foretelling danger. A storm is howling in from the past, but will she heed its roar?
Ash by Malinda Lo
In the wake of her father's death, Ash is left at the mercy of her cruel stepmother. Consumed with grief, her only joy comes by the light of the dying hearth fire, rereading the fairy tales her mother once told her. In her dreams, someday the fairies will steal her away. When she meets the dark and dangerous fairy Sidhean, she believes that her wish may be granted. The day that Ash meets Kaisa, the King's Huntress, her heart begins to change. Instead of chasing fairies, Ash learns to hunt with Kaisa. Their friendship, as delicate as a new bloom, reawakens Ash's capacity for love--and her desire to live. But Sidhean has already claimed Ash for his own, and she must make a choice between fairy tale dreams and true love. Entrancing and empowering, Ash beautifully unfolds the connections between life and love, and solitude and death, where transformation can come from even the deepest grief.
The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara
- A clever, romantic novel based on the true story of a girl who disguised herself as a boy to sail with the infamous pirates Anne Bonny and Calico Jack—and fell in love with Anne Bonny.
There’s no place for a girl in Mary’s world. Not in the home of her mum, desperately drunk and poor. Not in the household of her wealthy granny, where no girl can be named an heir. And certainly not in the arms of Nat, her childhood love who never knew her for who she was. As a sailor aboard a Caribbean merchant ship, Mary’s livelihood—and her safety—depends on her ability to disguise her gender.
At least, that’s what she thinks is true. But then pirates attack the ship, and in the midst of the gang of cutthroats, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate.
The sight of a girl standing unafraid upon the deck, gun and sword in hand, changes everything. In a split-second decision, Mary turns her gun on her own captain, earning herself the chance to join the account and become a pirate alongside Calico Jack and Anne Bonny.
For the first time, Mary has a shot at freedom. But imagining living as her true self is easier, it seems, than actually doing it. And when Mary finds herself falling for the captain’s mistress, she risks everything—her childhood love, her place among the crew, and even her life.
Breathlessly romantic and brilliantly subversive, The Unbinding of Mary Reade is sure to sweep readers off their feet and make their hearts soar.
Deviant Desire by Jackson Marsh (Just came out March 7th!)
- The Victorian East End lives in fear of the Ripper and his mission to kill rent boys. Silas Hawkins, nineteen and forging a life on the streets could well be the next victim, but when he meets Archer, his life changes forever. Young, attractive and rich, Archer is The Viscount Clearwater, a philanthropist, adventurer and homosexual. When Archer suspects the Ripper is killing to lure him to a confrontation, he risks his reputation and his life to stop the madman's murders. Every man must play his part, including Silas.A mashup of mystery, romance and adventure, Deviant Desire is set in an imaginary London of 1888. The first in an on-going series, it takes the theme of loyalty and friendship in a world where homosexuality is a crime. Secrets must be kept, lovers must be protected, and for Archer and Silas, it marks the start of their biggest adventure - love.
The Prince and The Dressmaker by Jen Wang
- Set in Paris, this graphic novel follows Sebastian, a prince with a secret. By day, Sebastian laments his parents' fervent search for his bride-to-be, but by night, Sebastian transforms into fashion icon Lady Crystallia! Sebastian's best friend and dressmaker, Frances, has kept his secret, but when the secret becomes too hard to keep, she may risk their friendship and Sebastian's trust for her own shot at the spotlight.
A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night series Book 1) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood
This whole series is gold, but here is the information on the first novel...
James Spencer is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends, indulging in his love of writing, and contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher. The rumours about William’s sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third years…rumours that only further pique James’ curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts, James is the only one who believes him. James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. The staff refuses to entertain such ridiculous tales, and punishment awaits anyone who brings it up. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers James’ determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hiding…especially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.
Originally, this list was going to include professors too, but they were already on a list and May/December romances will be on the list for May.
Adding a link for a list of best LGBT fantasy romances in the YA genre, because they have several novels with historical themes that I know friends/fellow readers I know, have enjoyed.

What should be on your Christmas reading list (book recommendations)
-harmless like you by Rowan Hisayo Buchanan.
This book was a little gem I picked up on a whim when the author visited my local store. It follows an artist and her life as she goes through her various struggles. It's the sort of book I found good to wind down with.
-the king killer chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss
If you like fantasy and you haven't read these books you are doing yourself a serious disservice. Just read them.
-!! the night circus by Erin Morgenstern.
Absolutely magical, this books imagery had me captivated and took me to another world. It follows a circus that only opens at night and takes you through all its secrets little by little as you experience it's beauty for yourself.
-!! The song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
Tells the story of Achilles in a new light, pretty gay to be honest, prepare the tissue box at the end. This was given to me by a friend when I asked to borrow some books she recommended, she added it in as an Easter egg and now I'm doing a whole sculpture project on it.
-1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
This series (true to Murakami) was a little strange, but I really enjoyed it and it was something that actually made me think long after I'd put it down. If you're not familiar with Murakami though I'd suggest reading Norwegian Wood first, but if you've read Murakami before then jump right in.
-!! the raven cycle by Maggie Steifvater.
Just read them.
- !! the great library by Rachel Caine
Imagine a world where the great library of Alexandria never burnt down, now imagine it has control of the world. Just a lil book nerd learning the hard way politics sucks but now he's right in the middle of it.
-the alchemy wars by Ian Tregellis.
I picked this series out of the library and I can't remember why because it's not my sort of genre but I fell in love with them. Jax is the best robot you'll ever meet. It's the sort of book that uses robots to question what it means to be human and what it means to be enslaved but its also got an aspect to it that is almost fun.
-!! A little life- Hanya Yanagihara
Follows a group of friends as they go through life, it's a bit dark so tw for like.. everything mental health and abuse related, but it really got me. Me and my friend read this book several times and ended up in tears every time. They will all become your children and it made me laugh, smile, cry and scream. Real emotion invoking but beautiful book.
- !! If we were villains by M.L.Rio.
Someone's dead- who did it?
Shakespeare university nerds, two friends who don't know they love each other yet and a whole lot of relatable friendship issues. And you won't be able to guess who the killer is. READ THIS.
- Fellside by M.R Carey
This book follows the story of an ex addict who ends up in a female prison where things start to go weird for her, she makes friends with a dead kid and accidentally makes the tough girl cry. Perfect if you want something a little mature but not too realistic.
-queens of geek by Jen Wilde
I read this in one go, its a short book that any YA geek will be able to relate to, it's a feel good that makes you feel a little less alone.
Happy reading.

Title: The Madame Catches Her Duke
Series: Craven House
Author: Christina McKnight
Genre: Historical Romance, Regency
Release Date: January 4, 2018
THERE’S A FINE LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE. Despite being thrown from her home and stripped of her place in society at a young age, Madame Marce Davenport is proud of what she’s accomplished with her family and the notoriously scandalous Craven House. Except it’s all built on a lie. When an arrogant duke strode into her home years ago, offering her a way to keep the brothel open, she agreed to his game of deception. But now that her siblings have found their happiness, Marce can finally live the life she’s always wanted: one that embraces the truth. And that means severing ties with the man who has claimed too many of her days—both in reality, and fantasy. Rowan Delconti, the Duke of Harwich, has been angry for so long: at his father, at the woman who broke apart his parents’ marriage, and at the children who won is father’s love. He’s determined his mother won’t be unhappy again—even if it means pretending to be married to Marce, so that his mother will think he’s found love in his life. But the beautiful madame fuels his fire like no other, and the charade starts to feel all too real. When Marce and Rowan’s secrets finally come to light, their passion may not be enough to staunch the hurt of the past. Can two people who were so wrong for each other, realize they’ve been right all along?
