Target 'sortation' center coming to Detroit fairgrounds site

A Target Corp. distribution facility is expected to open on the former Michigan State Fairgrounds site in Detroit.

The building would clock in at about 180,000 square feet on a portion of the sprawling property at Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, where the state's largest Amazon.com Inc. distribution facility has been constructed after being announced almost three years ago, the Minneapolis-based retail giant confirmed Tuesday.

The Target facility was first reported by The Detroit News on Monday.

Through a spokesperson, a message was sent to Detroit-based developer and landlord The Sterling Group, who is co-developing the majority of the property with Dallas-based Hillwood Enterprises LP.

Target did not respond to additional questions about the building.

A sign on the site — generally referred to as Parcel A — says a logistics-style building is expected to be open in June. A rendering shows a new building with some red on its front, but no tenant identified.

The contractors listed are Oliver/Hatcher Construction and MiG Construction.

In February, Target said it was opening more than a half-dozen sortation centers in a $100 million investment in markets across the U.S.

Those new facilities, expected to be online by 2026, add to its fleet of existing sortation centers in Minnesota, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Illinois. Its three most recent centers opened around Chicago and Denver. At the time, the company said its new facilities will end up "creating hundreds of new jobs in local metro areas with market-leading wages."

The sortation centers are a way to help Target compete with the rise in e-commerce. They receive orders prepared by store employees and send them out through a delivery network, whether that's Shipt or another third-party provider. Target refers to it as part of its "stores-as-hubs" strategy, using its brick-and-mortar big-box stores "as a launchpad for online orders."

The company said last year that its online sales rose nearly $13 billion from 2019 to 2021 and stores fulfilled more than 95% of total sales in 2021. Some 50 million packages are expected to go through Target sortation centers this year, double from last year, the company said.

Frank Hammer, a co-chair of the State Fairgrounds Development Coalition, which has been vocal in criticizing various components of the 142-acre property's redevelopment plan over many years, said the Target facility is going on the site of the old Joe Dumars Fieldhouse/Agricultural Building, demolition of which came as a surprise to his organization. He and members of the community first became aware of the incoming Target building when told by a city official during a Zoom meeting in May, Hammer said.

The Target facility would join the gargantuan Amazon facility, which is the size of approximately 20 typical Walmart stores.

"The idea that the fairgrounds can be turned into this mammoth logistics center ... We have a lot of feelings about that, because the fairgrounds actually plays a very critical role in Detroit and in the region, and the state," Hammer said.

The Sterling Group/Hillwood JV is also working on another building already under construction on the site, although its ultimate occupant is not yet known. It's expected to be about 292,000 square feet, per marketing materials from the Southfield office of Colliers International Inc., which has the listing.

Sterling Group and Hillwood paid $9 million for the fairgrounds site and no city tax breaks or incentives have been involved. The city paid $7 million for it in April 2020. The lack of tax incentives and the fact that the JV paid the appraised value of the land allowed it to skirt the city's community benefits ordinance process, which is triggered at $75 million.

"Our efforts from the very, very beginning was the notion of community input into what would become of the fairgrounds," Hammer said. "That was really our premise, in terms of our involvement. When the community benefits ordinance passed in 2016, we saw that as an opportunity ... That was something that was legislated, that this development, certainly Amazon would have, you know, come under the terms of the community benefits ordinance."

The $400 million Amazon facility started construction in late 2020.

The move marks Ant Financial's star product on the track to large-scale commercialization, and pushes distributed databases into a new stage of development.

Previously, antfin oceanbase twice challenged the international authoritative TPC-C test, which is known as the "World Cup of Database", and its performance score broke Oracle's years-long monopoly.

In May of this year, OceanBase dramatically broke its own record again in seven months. 2019 Eleventh Shopping Day During that time, Alibaba announced that OceanBase reached a peak of 61 million processes per second.

In 2010, the OceanBase project was launched within Alibaba. After years of exploration, OceanBase is gradually maturing and has commercialization capability.

Currently, OceanBase has served a large number of enterprises in the financial and telecommunications industries, including Construction Bank, Bank of Nanjing, Bank of Xi'an, PICC Health Insurance, Bank of Suzhou.

Two of the world's top four payment platforms are using OceanBase database for their core systems. In March this year, OceanBase was officially made available to the world via the Alibaba Cloud.

The new company will release a major version upgrade this year to add analytical business processing capabilities to its existing functionality, and OceanBase will be upgraded to an enterprise-class distributed database that supports HTAP mixed loads.

OceanBase also announced that it will serve more than 10,000 enterprise customers worldwide over the next three years.

Commenting on the independent corporatization of OceanBase, Ant Financial said, "Technology is a key part of Ant's vision for OceanBase. Financial's DNA and a key strategic direction for Ant Financial. After a decade of development, OceanBase has supported a variety of challenges in key areas such as Paypal and online banking, and has shown that Imaginative performance. We expect this new database to serve even more partners."

OceanBase adopts a new generation of distributed processing technology to stay ahead of the curve and achieve complete self-development in this cutting-edge technology direction of database.

Web Werks - Iron Mountain JV launches its First Greenfield Data Center in Mumbai

The Web Werks – Iron Mountain Data Centers (IMDC) Joint Venture, announced the inauguration of its first greenfield data center in Navi Mumbai, MUM-2. Iron Mountain entered into a joint venture agreement with Web Werks in 2021. William L. Meaney, President and Chief Executive Officer of Iron Mountain, presided over the inauguration ceremony that was held in Rabale, Navi Mumbai, in the presence of Web Werks and Iron Mountain global leadership teams, partners, and dignitaries from government authorities. Situated in a 120,000 square feet campus, the data center was built within 18 months of being announced, despite challenges caused by global supply disruptions and covid-19. The MUM-2 is a Tier 3-designated data center that can support 10MVA of gross power. It is adjacent to the Web Werks Mumbai-1 DC in Navi Mumbai allowing customers to take advantage of the existing rich interconnection ecosystem. The data center enables access to Tier-1 carriers, 200+ ISPs, three of India's largest peering exchanges, along with cloud on-ramp with major hyperscale cloud providers. Nikhil Rathi, CEO of Web Werks said, "We are pleased to announce the second data center facility in Navi Mumbai. Our existing data center in Mumbai is almost fully leased, and we see increased demand for our services from various customer segments. This demand will further be bolstered by the growing digitization, the rollout of the 5G network in India, and rising cloud adoption. With this new data center and our team of industry veterans, we will be able to support demand and offer a connectivity-rich ecosystem." William L. The Web Werks - Iron Mountain Data Centers JV previously announced they have signed MoUs with the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu government to set up data centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad. The construction of the standalone data centers is nearing completion and the first data halls will be made available in the first half of 2023. In 2022, Web Werks as part of the joint venture participated in the 3rd ground-breaking ceremony at the Global Investors Summit in Uttar Pradesh, and announced plans to invest in a new hyperscale data center in Noida. Adani Enterprises enters new partnership to use AI and blockchain in India

Formation of Joint Venture

Adani Enterprises Limited, in partnership with Sirius International Holding, has embarked on a venture to explore the relatable use cases in the fields of AI, IoT, and Blockchain. This partnership has led to the formation of a joint venture in Abu Dhabi called Sirius Digitech International Limited. 51% of this alliance will be owned by Sirius, and Adani will own the other 49%.

The main motive of this alliance is to tap into India's USD 175B digital economy.

Multifaceted Digital Transformation

A statement mentioned that Sirius's Joint Venture will leverage the expanding power of AI, Blockchain and IoT to develop and deploy an integrated ecosystem of digital platforms throughout infrastructure industries that would extend into areas like healthTech, FinTech and GreenTech.

Strategic Insights and Expertise

Sirius's alliance will capitalize on the multinational digital transformation expertise of Sirius and Adani's strategic insights to concentrate on heading the USD 175B opportunities to digitalize the Indian Economy. According to the latest predictions, this opportunity is quickly revolutionizing to turn the USD 1 Trillion market by the year 2030.

Diversification into Smart Metering and Renewable Energy

27 December, Adani Energy Solutions made an alliance with an organization backed by IHC to expand and develop a smart meter structure in domestically and internationally.

Adani's Transmission Step-Four Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Energy, gets a 49% share in Esyasoft Holdings Ltd's smart metering division. Adani Esyasoft specializes in implementing smart metering contracts worldwide. Apart from this, it will also specialize in renewable energy, EV Charging, energy efficiency and AI-driven analytics solutions.

Sirius JV aims to begin the creation and development of AI and enterprise Blockchain products and services by leveraging Adani Group's vast industrial testbed to validate and scale resolutions that can be used for multiple industrial applications.
